Travelogue From David W. Peters, Associate Rector If you’ve seen me lately, you’ve probably noticed I have a beard. This is big deal for me, since I have adhered to military grooming standards for my entire adult life. This expression of freedom has been fun, and I don’t know how long it will last. Thomas Cranmer never cut his beard after King Henry died, so there is much precedent for beards in Anglicanism. The last day I shaved was in August, when I completed my final Army Reserve duty thus signaling my retirement after 20 years. It has been a good ministry with lots of good people. Thank you for sending me into this mission field to share the life and light of Jesus with the women and men of our armed forces. This past summer I became an Episcopal Church Foundation Fellow. Part of my responsibilities has been to travel to parishes and dioceses around the Episcopal Church to start veterans’ ministries. So far I have made ten trips to parishes and cathedrals near and far to share the story of the Episcopal Veterans Fellowship and to build a network of leaders to do the work in their local context. 169th Diocesan Council, Feb. 15-17, Waco, TX Father Bill, Father David, and St. Mark’s four lay delegates: Melissa Blanding, Dru Cabler, Marjie Lawrence, & Becky Poynot will be in Waco, February 15-17, for Diocesan Council. On Thursday evening there is an opening Eucharist. The 40th Anniversary of the Ordination of Women will be celebrated as well.
Preparing for the Season of Lent Shrove Tuesday: February 13 Take the night off from cooking and come celebrate Shrove Tuesday at St. Mark’s with our famous Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, which begins at 6 p.m. The Parish Hall will be transformed into the spirit of Mardi Gras, and the men will flip the pancakes. Also on the menu: sausage and fruit cups. IHOP cannot compete with our prices: $4 for adults; $2 for children ages 6-12; $1 for children under the age of 6, and a maximum of $12 for a family.
Ash Wednesday: February 14 You may have noticed, but Ash Wednesday falls on February 14th, Valentines’ Day! We will have three services for Holy Eucharist and the Imposition of Ashes: 7:15 a.m., 12:15 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. The choir will sing at the evening service.
Wednesdays in Lent Each Wednesday during Lent, St. Mark’s hosts a Soup Supper, followed by a meditative worship service. The Soup Supper begins at 6 p.m., and musical, meditative celebrations of the Holy Eucharist begin at 7:00 p.m. Soup Suppers are on the following Wednesdays during Lent: February 21st, 28th, March 7th, 14th and 21st. Watch for the Soup Supper sign up sheets in the Parish Hall. The Women’s Group will be providing soup on February 21st; St. Mark’s Staff (and anyone else ) will host on February 28th; and the Men’s Group is taking March 21. Each host group is asked to provide a minimum of 10 soups, with two of the ten being vegetarian. If possible, bring soup in crockpot. Bread, peanut butter and jelly, and pimento spread will also be provided. Classical guitarist Matthew Gillen will be the guest musician. He has become a frequent prize winner at international music competitions. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts at UT Austin. Matthew has a Master’s degree in Performance from Florida State University and Bachelor’s degrees in Performance and Music Education from Ithaca College. Episcopal Church General Convention: July in ATX! The 79th General Convention of The Episcopal Church will be held in July in Austin at the Austin Convention Center. Volunteers are needed. The General Convention is the governing body of The Episcopal Church that meets every three years. It is a bicameral legislature that includes the House of Deputies and the House of Bishops, composed of deputies and bishops from each diocese. During its triennial meeting deputies and bishops consider a wide range of important matters facing the Church. In the interim between triennial meetings, various committees, commissions, agencies, boards and task forces created by the General Convention meet to implement the decisions and carry on the work of the General Convention. Outreach Souper Bowl of Caring, February 4. Our youth will be holding soup pots at the church doors before/after services to collect donations in support of the Souper Bowl of Caring and the Central Texas Food Bank.
El Buen Food Collection. We will be collecting small bags of white and brown rice in February.
Daughters of the King Diaper Drive Did you know that 1 out of 3 families in our community struggles with the availability of diapers? This sad statistic holds true nationally as well. Diapers, a seemingly innocuous supply item, impacts not only the health of an infant, but a family's ability to get to work to earn a living. WIC provides food for infants and young families but does not cover the cost of diapers. Further, diapers are taxed as nonfood items at the grocery store adding hardship to getting a basic necessity. Many families who are living in or on the edge of poverty are sometimes forced to choose between paying the rent, getting groceries, or getting diapers for their babies. These families have found ways to stretch out diaper use in a way that can cause diaper rash and other problems such as urinary tract infections. In addition, there is a need for adult diapers for elderly and others with chronic conditions. The Austin Diaper Bank (www.austindiapers.org) collects diapers and distributes them to our neighbors in need. For the second year in a row, The Daughters of the King are sponsoring a Diaper Drive at St. Mark's to support this organization. There are two ways to donate: 
Place donations of unopened wipes, unopened diaper cream, and unopened or opened packages of diapers (any size including adult) in the labeled bins in the Parish Hall from February through March.

Write a check to St. Mark's with "DOK Diaper Drive" in the memo line, and a check will be cut to the Austin Diaper Bank with your contributions.

LENTEN QUIET DAY will be held on February 17th from 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Father Mike Davis will be our guest priest. There will be a sign-up sheet posted in the Parish Hall. This event is sponsored by the Daughters of the King. What is a Quiet Day? A quiet day is a wonderful opportunity to be still and listen for God's voice as you begin your spiritual journey through Lent. We gather for Morning Prayer, have several meditations followed by times to be alone, and end the day with Eucharist. A simple lunch is provided. If the weather cooperates, we will have opportunities to enjoy spending some time outdoors on the Meditation Trail, the Labyrinth, in the Memorial Garden, or in the lovely areas with benches. It is a 2016 Pulitzer Prize winner for fiction. Shrouded by Meredith Lee (Amazon 4 1/2 stars) American graduate student Crispin Leads arrives at the Vatican to study the Shroud of Turin and becomes a witness to a murder and is subsequently drawn into the investigation of multiple homicides.

Summer Is on the Way! Time to mark those calendars for VBS & Camp Allen! St. Mark’s Vacation Bible School for children 4 years through 5th grade will be held on June 4 8. There will be childcare for young children of parent leaders. Please talk to Cindy Cabler if you are interested in helping with VBS this year: ccabler@stmarksaustin.org. We’d love to share this great experience with both you and your children! Registration will be coming soon! Adult and youth volunteers are needed to help this program be a success. Camp Allen Summer Camps begin June 3 for rising 3rd through 12th graders, and registration is open! Five New Vestry Members Elected at Annual Parish Meeting At the Annual Parish Meeting on January 21, 2018, we thanked outgoing Senior Warden Clarence Bonnen and the four other vestry members whose terms ended for their service to our parish: Becky Brownlee, Jill Collins, John Cooper, and Ann Seyler. We then elected a new slate of candidates. Joining the Vestry in 2018 are Phil Aboussie, Meredith Childs, Kathy Genet, Jennifer Payne, and Susan Randle. Melissa Blanding was chosen to be our next Senior Warden. Following the Annual Meeting, the new Vestry had its first meeting and selected Scott Forrest as Junior Warden.

Music Notes February may be the shortest month of the year, but it will be filled with beautiful choral music at St. Mark’s! Here’s a look at what the choirs will be singing in worship this month: Sunday, February 4 “Thee We Adore” by T. Frederick Candlyn Candlyn (1892–1964) moved to America from England as a young man. He served for nearly thirty years as Organist/Choirmaster at an Episcopal church in Albany, New York. From 1943 to 1954 he directed the music program at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in New York City, home of the most prestigious choral program in the Anglican tradition outside of the UK. “Thee We Adore” is a lush setting of the familiar Latin hymn “Adoro Te Devote.” “Have You Not Known?” by Milburn Price Price (b. 1938) has served on the music faculty at many American colleges, including Furman, Mercer, and Stetson University. He was dean of the music schools at Samford University and the Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville. This anthem is a setting of Isaiah 40:21–31. A portion of the anthem describes the majesty of God in a severe minor-key style. When the text changes to “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength…” the style changes completely. The music shifts into the major mode, the organ plays a lilting accompaniment, and the choral lines ascend in depiction of the text. Sunday, February 11 “Clap Your Hands, Sing for Joy!” by Douglas Wagner The Choristers will sing this lively anthem at the 9:00 service. It’s a song of thanksgiving that surveys the multitude of reasons to praise God. Wagner (b. 1952) is a retired Indianapolis high school music teacher who has published more than 2,500 pieces of music in the past forty years. “Fairest Lord Jesus” arr. by Derek Hakes This stunning arrangement of the familiar hymn is a fitting way to end the season of Epiphany. Hakes (b. 1979) first pairs the tune with a flowing piano part. An unaccompanied verse featuring gorgeous harmonies then leads into a triumphant statement of the last verse. A thrilling soprano descant, more sumptuous partwriting, and a dramatic piano part give way to a gentle “Amen.” Ash Wednesday, February 14 “Treasures in Heaven” by Joseph Clokey Clokey (1890–1960) was a noted American composer, educator, and church musician in the first half of the 20th century. This anthem sets portions of Matthew 6, incorporating free-flowing elements of plainchant and choral writing that evokes the Russian sacred style. Sunday, February 18 “Litany” by Lloyd Pfautsch Pfautsch (1921–2003) was a professor of choral and sacred music at SMU in Dallas. Over 300 of his choral works were published during his lifetime. This anthem is cast a prayer. A soloist intones pleas for mercy, forgiveness, and peace. The choir responds to each petition with the words “we beseech thee, hear us.” Sunday, February 25 “All the Ends of the World” by William Boyce Boyce (1711–1779) sang as a choirboy at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, and eventually became Master of the King’s Music and Organist of the Chapel Royal. He wrote symphonies, anthems, and odes. Later in life, he edited a collection of “Cathedral Music” by various composers. Many of these works are still sung in Anglican services today. This anthem is a five-part setting of Psalm 22:26. Boyce treats the text in the style of earlier Renaissance composers like Palestrina, stringing together a series of “points of imitation.” Each phrase of text is paired with a musical theme. One voice at a time enters with this theme. Once all voices have sung the theme, Boyce moves on to the next phrase of text and begins the process again.

Just a glance at the list of dates above tells me that here at St. Mark’s, we will be packing a lot of activity into one short month. And, yes, it’s time to start thinking about Lent. As I was contemplating what to write this month, I thought about pulling together information, ideas and resources about how to talk to our children about Lent and family activities for Lenten practice. I asked Google; I poked around some likely websites. I made some feeble and pedantic attempts at composition. Honestly, you’d do better to google your own list. I thought my problem with writing this column was the subject matter: Lent. I’m kind of like a kid – you want me to give up <insert favorite food/activity here>? For how long? Are you crazy?!! OK, OK, I’ll give up…hmm…oh, I know! I’ll give up BEETS! Yeah, that’s the ticket! No beets for the duration of Lent! Sounds like some really mature, spiritual thinking, huh? But the more I thought about it, I realized that the problem is not the subject matter. I actually do have some deeply held, spiritual thoughts about Lent, some of which might even be classified as mature. And although I don’t really mind sharing some of these thoughts, they really aren’t all that different or better developed than what you might read elsewhere. My real problem? I need to follow the old axiom: write what you know. So, here’s what I know, or at any rate think I know, about Lent, specifically Lenten practices. These are my truths, but I’m not suggesting that they have to be yours.
It is often more fulfilling—and easier to stick with—to take on a new Lenten practice rather than give something up. Whatever is taken on (or given up) should be personally meaningful, and it needs to have a “hook” – something compelling that makes it easier to stay on track…or to come back to when the seemingly inevitable lapse happens. Our children are watching us; they learn more from the behavior we model than our wise words—and they will catch us if we are less than “authentic.” We can’t always coerce them into observing Lent as we do, but they are observing us; they will remember the things we do, especially when those things seem genuine. Lent can seem like a solitary spiritual pathway—after all Jesus walked into the wilderness alone—but that doesn’t mean we can’t welcome fellow pilgrims to share our journey, even if only part of the way. Everything is better, and the memories seem sharper, if food is involved. Lent is no exception.

February 2018 I have a short list of recommendations that fit my personal Lent criteria to a tee. Perhaps you, too, would consider taking on one of these ideas:
Attend one or more Christian formation classes on Sundays—both your kids & yourself. There are classes every week during Lent (except Palm Sunday); let’s explore important topics together. Attend one or more Wednesday Lenten services. Contemplative, warm. and supportive, these special services feature beautiful music and readings. Enjoy the quiet meditations of your heart in companionship with fellow congregants. Pitch in! There are many ways to volunteer at St. Mark’s: help with setup/cleanup in the Parish Hall on Wednesdays, assist in Children’s Chapel on Sundays (there is a need for both youth and adult helpers) … there’s always something to sign up for!
There you have it. All my thoughts on Lent, and Lenten practice, in five easy bullets and three activities! Wait just a minute you say! “Cindy, where’s the food in all of this?” I didn’t forget about that, I was just saving the best for last! It turns out that I actually have a fourth activity to share, one that is a favorite at our house:
Eat supper at St. Mark’s!
One of my favorite Lenten memories involves the Lenten Soup Suppers (and a certain innovation that my friend Kathy and I debuted). My daughter is partial to the Pancake Supper; though not technically part of Lent, this Shrove Tuesday event does serve to mark the start of Lent. It’s not always possible for busy families in the middle of the week to make time for these meal traditions, but I urge to you to try it, especially if you’ve never come before. Just think: you’d be taking on an act of fellowship, one that has a tasty “hook” and can be shared with your children and friends, while making memories—and you don’t even have to cook supper (unless you want to count that as one of your “Pitch in” activities). There’s a lot of goodness, right there! And, if you are like me, you can still honor your pledge to give up beets during Lent—just bypass the borscht! (I mean no disrespect to my beet-eating/borscht-making friends, but now you know why I just cannot…)

Parishioner Highlights The Kelly family’s journey speaks to their expansive family, to passionately searching for the right church, family values and the importance of those values, what being new at St. Mark’s meant to them and the welcoming excitement that was felt. Both have had multiple careers related to the fields of communication and education. Laurel and Ron Kelly Family My (Laurel’s) story with St. Mark's began in the spring of 2015. I had been searching for a new church home following my move to Austin during the summer of 2014. I'd been to two other churches before finding St. Mark's on the Internet. Ron and I visited together and after our first visit, he told me, “I think you've found your home. This feels right.” He was right. I had. Mother Elizabeth had a lot to do with my second visit, helping me feel so welcome! And I will never forget how on June 6 of that same year, the day of my son's wedding, Elizabeth called me to wish me happy birthday—a forgotten event during a hectic time! I became more acquainted with some of the St. Mark's folks after we joined a dinner group. We were blessed to be grouped with Cathy and James Nelson, Resa and Sam Dunn, and Scott and Maria Lubeck. I had the pleasure of helping Cathy Nelson when I volunteered with VBS. This was even more enjoyable because of my wonderful teaching partner, Resa. However, I soon became further involved at St. Mark's when I attended the Newcomer's luncheon (a great thing that St. Mark's does by the way) and met my new friend Evelyn McMillen. Evelyn encouraged me to join the Martha’s and the ECW, which I was so glad that I did. I felt so welcome and enjoy the fellowship as part of both of these groups. God was working on my heart as I felt a calling to be more involved with prayer and service. I had been a "lapsed" DOK member from my previous church. I approached Judy about getting reinstated last fall, and now am very happy to be once again part of this order. Also, recently, Evelyn and I, with our love of gardening, have begun caring for and working in
“Elizabeth’s Garden" - a special place at St. Mark's that we both love. I was born in North Carolina, and I have lived in Texas since I was 3, so I definitely consider myself a Texan. Ron was born in Massachusetts, but moved around a lot. He always says, “He got to Texas as fast as he could!" We met in Nacogdoches at Stephen F. Austin State University, and where we were later married at Christ Episcopal Church by the Rev. William V. Kegler, who had served as rector at the church where I grew up in Houston. We reluctantly left East Texas for jobs in Houston. Ron took an entry level job at MD Anderson - AV department - Medical Communications. His degree was in Radio, TV, and Communications. My degree was in Social Work & Rehabilitation which really necessitated a Master's degree to find employment. So I worked temporary jobs for a while. Nine months later we moved to Galveston where Ron was employed at UTMB as a writer/producer for their Medical Communications department. I began my foray into teaching with my first job at Headstart in the Hitchcock ISD. Two years later, we moved back to Houston. Ron went back to work at MD Anderson and I taught in private schools while working on completing several teaching certifications at Houston Baptist University. In August of 1986, we were blessed with the birth and subsequent adoption of our son, Nathan. I started teaching in a public school in Houston ISD when Nathan was in second grade. After working at different schools in the district, I spent my last 15 years of teaching at Parker Elementary (a Grammy award winning music magnet school) before my retirement. The summer of 2014 brought retirement from teaching after 33 years, my 60th birthday, sale of our home of 23 years, and my moving to Austin. At that time Ron and I had a commuter relationship between

February 2018 Austin and Houston for seven years. He had taken a job with the State of Texas Comptroller's office in their training department following numerous stints in the Houston area. Ron and I recently celebrated our 43rd anniversary on January 10! We love being near our son Nathan and daughter-in-law Meredith, and 4-monthold grandson Jacob, along with our granddog Nala. The rest of our family is scattered across the state and beyond.
Austin! I also love anything related to waterswimming, snorkeling, rafting, and tubing. I also enjoy reading, exercise classes, eating out, and cooking when I have the time and inclination! Mentoring my students once a week at Menchaca Elementary is very special, as are movies (although I haven't been to the theater in months due to Netflix). Other loves are making new friends, keeping up with my current ones and my family, and especially my 1st grandchild Jacob! We currently live in far South Austin. We look forward to traveling more when Ron retires this year. He will then get to further explore his passion for photography. We both also want to see more of this great country!
