St. Mark’s News Volume 21/Issue 7

From the Interim Rector Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. I am so honored and excited to come among you in this special time at St. Mark’s! In short order, I have gotten to work with a gifted and dedicated staff at the parish and school—everyone has greeted me with a spirit of openness and welcome. In July, I participated in my first vestry meeting at St. Mark’s, and I met a remarkable group of Church leaders. There was a wonderful spirit of common purpose and much laughter, too, even as we discussed weighty topics at St. Mark’s. I’ve seen Christ in the many smiling faces and extended hands that have met me in this wonderful community. There is an entire Church vocabulary, what I call “Episcospeak,” to describe this particular moment in parish life. We are in “transition,” and in a time of “discernment.” Really, though, this is the story of the people of God since the beginning. We as God’s people are always on the move, always seeking to discern God’s will, and at our best, we are ever ready to see where Christ wants us to follow. Take Abraham and Sarah, for example, who were well settled and very comfortable. God set these two in motion and the whole of salvation history was sparked by their response to God’s call.

God has wonderful things in store for St. Mark’s today, just as God has for the past two or three generations. Of that, I am certain. As my old Granddad would say, “You can take that to the bank.” And we are hardly without resources to claim the fullness of that grace. Our processes at the Diocese of Texas are the best in the entire Church. We have a deep well of faith upon which to draw for refreshment and renewal. To quote St. Paul: For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. (1Tim 1:7 KVJ). I am glad to come among you and to serve as your rector for a time. It is a very sweet blessing, indeed. Bill+
