Letter from the Interim Moderator Dear folks Energy and focus have a lot to do with what we can achieve. A balance of rest, refreshment, preparation and hard work can bear many fruits.

As a keen Dons supporter, it has been an interesting week. Last Saturday the Dons worked hard when playing against Celtic at Celtic Park to achieve a well-earned draw. On Tuesday the Aberdeen FC team had to play Rangers in a Quarter final replay. They won very convincingly with a 2-0 result.

Then on Saturday it was back to Pittodrie to play Livingston, a lower positioned team in the Scottish Premier league but the best they could achieve this time was a 1-1 draw. The team seemed tired following their exertions against Celtic and Rangers in Glasgow in the past week.

Another example of tiredness and energy was the amazing rugby match between England and Scotland in the Six Nations that took place last weekend. In the first half, Scotland were being thrashed, losing 310, but they managed to get a try and a conversion before the interval which gave them 7 points. The second half was a complete turnaround, with Scotland scoring amazing tries and scoring 38 consecutive points. They were going to win. However, in the last two minutes of the match. England were able to score a try and a conversion which brought the final score to 38-38. A draw.

Perhaps England thought they had done all they had to do in the first half, and through being tired, relaxed and before they knew it Scotland were all over them.

When we are tired, we can be vulnerable to attack. It’s important to be alert, be prepared and when we can, rest and recharge our batteries.

This is the season of Lent, a period when many parts of the Church remember the forty days Jesus was in the wilderness facing challenges from the Devil. It was a time of preparation for his utterly dedicated service and sacrifice given which followed right through to the Crucifixion and the resurrection. This is a good time to draw near to Jesus, contemplate more deeply the journey he went through and as important, to learn how he will accompany and enable us through whatever challenging journeys we have to make.

When I worked at a drug addiction rehabilitation centre, a helpful abbreviation was used which indicated the warning signs to look out for. HALT - Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired. When we are going through these, we are more likely to be vulnerable to making the wrong choices and doing the wrong things. So, we should try in our lives to act in a way that prevents these experiences from being overwhelming and also, we should trust in the presence of Jesus alongside us to strengthen us in facing the challenges.

Hebrews 4:14-16 New International Version (NIV) ‘Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.’

May God richly bless you over Lent, Holy Week and Easter as you celebrate these wonderful events brought about through the loving God and Saviour we worship.

To God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit be praise and glory for ever.

Messenger Deadlines 2019 Please remember that this magazine is for all St Mark’s members and articles for publication are always welcome.

Please note that the Deadlines for submission of material during the year are as follows: 28 April, 1 September & 10 November. Manuscript items should be given to the Editor a week before these dates.

By the time this is in print in the magazine the winter session will have come to a close.

We have had some very interesting joint meetings with the guild ladies and on other nights enjoyed dominoes or bowling. Thanks for all who have attended the meetings.

The next winter session will start in October so look out for more information later in the year. Have a lovely summer break.

St Mark’s Rambling Group Since the last magazine article, the group finished the 2018 walking season with a festive Christmas lunch.

Since restarting walking in 2019 after the Christmas break the following walks were undertaken: A New Year walk from Castlegate to Fittie and along the prom on this windy day and it certainly blew away the cobwebs. The walkers finished in town having walked to Donmouth, Seaton Park and along the Spital.

A walk from Seaton Park the week after saw the group walking along one side of the River Don to Persley and return by the other. February 5th was a walk from the Tivoli to the Torry Battery and along to the Bay of Nigg looking at the harbour extension project works on the way. The leader had a little slip and managed to hobble back to town at the end of this walk. The February 9th Saturday walk had to be postponed due to both the leaders being incapacitated.

Other February walks included Bridge Street up the West End to Johnston Gardens, Walker Dam and Hazlehead Park on the 12th. The 19th Crynes Cross Mouth along forest tracks visiting old ruins that had been on the old route from Deeside to the Mearns. On the 26th the group met at Woodend bus terminus for this walk to Den of Maiden Craig, Hazlehaed Park, Foggiton woods and down to Cults and the bus back to town.

Eveline Smith - Happy 100

Mrs Eveline Smith celebrated a birthday milestone on Sunday 3rd February and received a card form the Queen to help celebrate her 100th birthday. On Monday 4th February the Guild of Friendship had a special birthday party for her with entertainment.

Eveline if pictured with Stiubhart who had presented a card and flowers and looking on is daughter Jennifer. Eveline is a regular at the Guild of Friendship. “Each year, thousands of birthday and wedding anniversary cards are sent on behalf of The Queen to people celebrating significant birthdays and wedding anniversaries.

The delivery of these messages is arranged by the Anniversaries Office at Buckingham Palace, continuing a tradition which goes back to 1917.

Cards are sent to those celebrating their 100th and 105th birthday and every year thereafter, and to those celebrating their diamond wedding (60th), 65th, 70th wedding anniversaries and every year thereafter.�

What Will You do on Saturday?

Reluctant during Christ’s lifetime, but courageous at his death, Joseph and Nicodemus came to serve Jesus.

They came to bury him. They ascended the hill bearing the graveclothes. Pilate had given his permission.

Joseph of Arimathea had given a tomb. Nicodemus had brought the spices and linens.

John tells us that Nicodemus had with him seventy-five pounds of myrrh and aloes. The amount is worth noting, for that amount of burial ointments was typically only ever used on kings. And John comments on the linens because to him they were a picture of Friday’s tragedy. As long as there were no grave clothes, as long as there was no tomb, as long as there was no coroner, there was hope. But the arrival of two friends on a barren hill triggered the departure of any hope. To this disciple, the grave clothes symbolised tragedy.

Was there a greater tragedy for him than the death of Jesus? Three years earlier, John had turned his back on a career and cast in his lot with this carpenter from Nazareth. Earlier that week John had enjoyed a ticker-tape parade (well, a palm branch equivalent anyway) as he had entered Jerusalem with his friends. And how quickly things had changed. Those who had hailed Jesus as king on Sunday had called for his death a few days later. No, these linens were a tangible reminder that his friend and his future were wrapped in cloth and sealed behind an immovable rock.

Now don’t get all picky with me and tell me the rock wasn’t immovable to the Lord. Please. Take in the reality of the situation. John didn’t know on Friday what you and I know today. He had no concept that Friday’s tragedy would be Sunday’s triumph. John himself would later confess that he, “did not yet understand from the Scriptures that Jesus must rise from the dead.” (John 20:9).

That’s why what he did on Saturday is so important.

We don’t know anything about this day. We have no passage of Scripture to read. We have no knowledge to share. All we know is this: when Sunday came, John was still present. When Mary Magdalene came looking for him, she found him. Jesus was dead.

The master’s body was lifeless. John’s friend, and John’s future were buried.

But John hadn’t left. Was he waiting for the resurrection? We know he wasn’t from the confession we read a moment ago. As far as John knew, the lips were forever silent, the hands forever still. He wasn’t expecting a surprise that Sunday. So why was he here?

You’d think he would have left. Who was to say that the men who had come and crucified Jesus weren’t planning to come back for the others? After all, the crowd had been pleased with one crucifixion; the religious leaders might have called for more. So why didn’t John get out of town?

Perhaps the answer is pragmatic. Perhaps he was taking care of Jesus’ mother as he had promised. Perhaps he didn’t have anywhere else to go. Maybe he was out of money, or energy, or direction. Or maybe it was all of the above? Or then again, maybe he lingered because he loved Jesus.

To many, Jesus was a miracle-worker. To others, Jesus was a master teacher. To some, Jesus was the hope of Israel. But to John, he was all of these, and more. To John, Jesus was a friend. You don’t abandon a friend. Not even when that friend is dead. John chose to stay close to Jesus.

You see, John had a habit of doing just that. He was close to Jesus in the Upper Room. He was close to Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.

He was at the foot of the cross at the crucifixion. He was a quick walk from the tomb at the burial.

Did he understand Jesus? No. 16

Was he glad that Jesus had done what he did? No. But did he leave Jesus? No. What about us? In John’s position, what would we do?

When we’re caught in that Saturday, sandwiched between crucifixion Friday and resurrection Sunday, how do we react? Stuck between yesterday’s tragedy and tomorrow’s triumph, what do we do? Do we leave God – or do we linger near him?

John chose to linger. And unlike Thomas, the one who lingered on Saturday was around on Sunday to see the miracle.

ABIGAIL MINISTRIES – RUGUT PROJECTS Praise God, we have finally had some progress on the 2nd block of SEED school. Abigail Ministries visited Eldoret in February to oversee the progress and sent this photo of the nearly completed second block.

This has been a work in progress for a couple of years due to problems with builders, but all has now been resolved. Further updates about the Rugut Projects will appear on the Mission and Outreach noticeboard in the hall including emails from Daniel and Grace and the Rugut children.

If you would like to become sponsor for Abigail Ministries and donate on a monthly basis, please let me know. No amount is too small as so much can be done with even a small donation.

We are organising a fund raiser later in the year and further information will follow in the next Messenger.

The St Mark’s Guild The Guild session is almost at an end with our AGM and two afternoon meetings to come. Since Christmas we have enjoyed another varied series of meetings, everything from a musical entertainment by Jim and Marisha Addison to our Discussion Topic ‘Unexpected Journeys’ when we looked at the plight of displaced people and refugees and how we can help them.

Numbers attending afternoon and evening meetings have generally been good and the Men’s Club have joined us most evenings.

Another very successful Coffee Morning was held in March and raised £622 to go towards the annual Ministry and Mission contribution the church pays to central funds. Many thanks to all who helped in any way and we appreciate the support from so many members of the congregation and other friends.

We have our joint meal with the Men’s Club on Monday 15th April, and we look forward to that.

Christian Aid Week 2019 Christian Aid is working in 37 countries supporting local agencies in their work, sometimes supplying emergency aid when and where it is needed, but often in projects of all kinds to help people improve their lives. It asks, ‘Why are people poor?’ and then tries to do something about it.

Christian Aid Week last year raised £18m in the UK, 400 churches in Scotland raising £4.8m of that sum.

This year the Week is 12-18 May and the theme is ‘All mums should live’, which concentrates on the world’s most dangerous place to become a mum – Sierra Leone in West Africa where 10 women die every day from giving birth.

The Mission & Outreach Team at St. Mark’s is holding a Quiz Night and Supper at the Ashvale Restaurant on Monday 13th May at 6.30 p.m. for Christian Aid and we hope the congregation will support this venture and bring friends too. Tickets will be available about mid-April and will cost £15 (includes a donation to Christian Aid). There will also be a raffle and Arlene Grant will be happy to receive donations for that.

Christian Aid envelopes will be available in the church vestibule before and during Christian Aid Week for those who wish to donate in that way.

There will be a Christian Aid Service on Sunday 12th May. Doreen Gray Christian Aid Representative.

The Working Homeless A humorous view on a serious social problem. A recent Freedom of Information request obtained by Channel 4 Dispatches revealed that 55% of homeless families trapped in temporary accommodation are working. That is 33,000 families.

Long before this winter’s snow I dreamt of this day’s sunny glow And thought somehow my pain would pass With winter’s pain, and peace like grass Would simply grow. (But) The pain’s not gone.

It’s still as cold and hard and long As lonely pain has ever been, It cuts so deep and fear within.

Long before this winter’s snow I ran from pain, looked high and low For some fast way to get around Its hurt and cold. I’d have found, If I had looked at what was there, That things don’t follow fast or fair.

That life goes on, and times do change, And grass does grow despite life’s pains.

Long before this winter’s snow I thought that this day’s sunny glow, The smiling children and growing things And flowers bright were brought by spring.

Scottish Country Dance Class As we approach the end of our Winter session, I would like to thank all our dancers for their loyalty and support.

Due to unforeseen circumstances we have had to change 2 of our dates in April. We meet as usual on Wednesday 3rd, then we meet next on Wednesday 10th, instead of Wednesday 17th and finally finish on Wednesday 24th with our Party Night.

Just a ‘plug’ for the RSCDS Aberdeen Branch ‘Summer Socials’ held every Wednesday at 7.30pm throughout May, June, July and August at ‘Curl Aberdeen’ (off Lang Stracht). All dances are re-capped, and music is usually ‘live’.
