A Message From the Head of School

Power of Connection Let me tell you of my first encounter with sisterhood at St. Margaret’s. Early in my career, I greeted alumnae and handed out name tags at the welcome table during Alumnae Weekend. I am the product of large public schools, so you can imagine how surprised I was seeing women of all ages, 22 to 92, approaching one another from all over campus, arms extended, yelling remarks of joy at seeing one another. They said things like “let’s go up to SMS 1 where we had English” or “we need to go to Latane 301 to see our old room” or “do you remember when Ms. Woolfolk finally called school off for snow because it was so deep we couldn’t get the Latane doors open?” The genuine care and the obvious joy I saw on every one of their faces will stay with me forever. And of course, over time I began to understand why.

If you are an alumna, you know the power of connectedness in your time at St. Margaret’s and in your life. The connectedness that a student feels at St. Margaret’s is almost immediate and lasts a lifetime. We call this connectedness sisterhood. This acceptance and friendship among peers enables girls to feel comfortable and empowered to push 2

themselves to meet challenges. We see this in the classroom, on the playing fields, and in down time.

Girls help one another to better understand what they are learning, teach one another how to master skills in sports, and simply share what is bothering them in life. Oftentimes when I talk with seniors before they graduate, they note that this sisterhood is the most special aspect of St. Margaret’s.

We pride ourselves in creating an environment where girls learn to do what they never knew they could do.

Girls learn to push themselves to achieve. They learn resilience when the challenge is not attainable at that moment. They learn from every attempt that they make toward their goal. And they do not give up.

With this effort, a positive attitude, and the power of their friendships, girls gain confidence.

In my time at St. Margaret’s, I am happy to say that I have seen the sisterhood grow beyond supporting one another as friends to one of supporting one another in life aspirations and careers. More and more I see alumnae making connections to help others promote themselves. Mentoring is an important part of this sisterhood as older alumnae reach out to guide, advise, and befriend younger alumnae. This networking supports our mission of each student becoming her best and making a better world.

The Importance of the Girls’ Network As alumnae of St. Margaret’s School can attest, girls’ schools provide greater opportunities for girls’ participation in such areas as math, science, and sports, while multiple female role models and a shared sense of camaraderie and inclusiveness help girls build self-confidence. But how do these advantages carry over into girls’ later lives as they enter college and the workplace?

Recent research suggests that women who have female networks are better able to secure leadership positions and higher paying jobs. In “Power of the Pack,” Shelley Zalis of ForbesWomen writes about the research published in the Harvard Business Review in early 2019 that describes the different types of networks associated with women and men who landed higher-paying and more senior jobs as they left graduate business programs. While both women and men benefited professionally from being central in the student network, women who also had a strong female network at school tended to land jobs with higher salaries and more responsibilities than women who did not have such a network.

These supportive networks can help professional women counter some of the biases against them that still exist, even in 2019. McKinsey and Company recently published their study of 279 companies and more than 64,000 employees, which documents the ongoing barriers that women face, including underrepresentation, less support from managers, and sexual harassment. In describing ways to address these barriers, the report notes that having work-sponsored opportunities and safe places for women to connect with other women employees can promote professional growth and networking.

Girls’ schools set the stage for this kind of later networking by promoting mutual support across academics, sports, and other activities and by valuing the worth of girls’ contributions. At St. Margaret’s, these attributes are woven into the school’s mission: Belong, Believe, Become.

Faculty and staff at St. Margaret’s live out this mission by ensuring that girls • experience a strong sense of connectedness, • develop confidence and belief in themselves, and • cultivate the skills and competence that will allow each girl to become her best.

As St. Margaret’s girls benefit from the support they receive, they also learn to support each other. This sisterhood helps them build the networking skills that will hold them in good stead as they enter college and the workforce. Women may still face barriers on the job, but St. Margaret’s girls—and women—enter the workplace with the advantage of their St. Margaret’s networking skills and experience.

From the Board Chair Dear St. Margaret’s Friends, What a privilege it is to be back on the St. Margaret’s Board, especially as we celebrate a century of service. SMS drew me to serve because I recognize its unique recipe to shape girls’ and families’ lives. I also value its role as an economic development engine and community partner.

Importantly, St. Margaret’s is a foundational place for alumnae, to which we return to reset our compass. Every year, the friendships and purpose that St. Margaret’s alumnae and associates share become more potent.

Recently, a few of my classmates met at Longview Farm in North Carolina. We loved being with Jane ’75 and Joe Brown and seeing the family’s stewardship of the farm. Their parents and sisters, Caroline ’74 and Duna ’79, have houses on the farm and are doing well. Mildred ’73 was visiting from Michigan. Billy Long served on the St. Margaret’s Board, and many of us know the family well, from Terry ’70 through Betty Mason ’78. This family is a wonderful example of “growing in grace” with age and experience, and Longview was the perfect place for our group to enjoy lifelong SMS friends.

This Thistle celebrates that kind of sisterhood and “the power of the pack.” When I am with alumnae and other friends of the school, I feel the collective allegiance to St. Margaret’s, as well as the belief that it has relevance and value that warrant our commitment for the next century.

I want to call on you to actively commit with me to this direction. The St. Margaret’s Board, with Cathy Sgroi, is evaluating and acting to move forward with mission clarity and fiscal strength. While we have an effective product for girls, we face market and financial challenges, as do all single-sex boarding schools. I am optimistic that we can sustain this institution. Transformational activity is imperative and requires help from all St. Margaret’s friends and alumnae.

So please follow St. Margaret’s on Facebook and the school website to see what we are up to in this important year. It is time for us all to heave-ho with our time and financial support. Janie Sellers ’71 is leading the Centennial Committee, and her group can use help. A Campaign for Sustainability will be launched in the near future, and we need your contributions and outreach to other alumnae and friends to help ensure our future. Each of us should be recruiting girls to St. Margaret’s. Thank you for joining the board and school leaders to sustain this remarkable institution.

The Annual Fund

This year the Annual Fund had a boost through the Power of One, a seven-day campaign launched in March with a goal of 500 new donors. Although we fell just shy at 92 percent of the goal, we raised more than $103,000 in seven days! The campaign helped us achieve 33-percent alumnae participation and 60-percent parent participation—the highest levels of participation we’ve seen among these groups in recent history.

Participation giving is important because of the following:

• Alumnae and parent participation creates a broad and diverse base of support as well as long-term support.

• Alumnae participation rate is one of the seven factors considered by third-party reports when evaluating and ranking institutions. Rankings can affect reputation, which can affect enrollment, and enrollment can affect revenue from tuition.

• People and organizations want to invest in successful institutions that others are supporting. High levels of alumnae and parent participation can inspire major donors, corporations, and foundations to increase their support.

Distinguished Alumna Award—Hillary Pugh Kent ’99 Established in 1996, the Distinguished Alumna Award is presented annually to an alumna for living the St. Margaret’s mission: “As we grow in age, may we grow in grace.” Recognizing her many achievements, the award was presented this year to Hillary Pugh Kent ’99.

During her four years at St. Margaret’s, Hillary was a Peer Leader, Head Day prefect, secretary of her junior and senior class, co-captain of the Blue Team, president and founder of Basic Needs, and May Ball Queen. She received the Viola H. Woolfolk Spirit Award, the School Prize, and the DAR Award, among many other prestigious honors.

A graduate of Randolph Macon College with a double major in political science and international relations, Hillary also earned a Hillary Pugh Kent ‘99. master’s degree in public administration from Virginia Commonwealth University. After working successfully with Anheuser-Busch in Marketing and Special Events, Hillary returned to the Northern Neck in 2010 to work in her family business, Al Pugh Distributing Company.

Hillary is a founding member of the Warsaw-Richmond County Main Street Program, as well as a member of the Town of Warsaw Economic Development Management Committee, the YMCA Board, Ledwith-Lewis Free Clinic Board, and the Northern Neck Land Conservancy Board. She recently led the competitive process that won a $1 million grant for the Town of Warsaw from the Virginia Department of Housing and Development Authority.

Hillary lives in Warsaw with her husband, Ryan, and their boys, Braiden, Truman, and 18-month-old twins Crew and Channing. Congratulations, Hillary!

The Hannah Mallory Perkins Alumnae in Service Award Like many girls, Kate came to SMS unsure of what to expect when she arrived for her eighth-grade year.

And, like many girls, she had a tremendous experience as a five-year boarder. Her senior yearbook tells of her deep love for St. Margaret’s when she shared, “I will miss this place, and I will be back.”

After graduation, Kate returned home to North Carolina and traded her St. Margaret’s blue for UNC Tar Heel blue. Fifteen years later, Kate proved true to her word and returned to campus to serve as our Director of Residential and Student Life. During the four years that followed, she forged relationships with a new generation of SMS faculty, staff, and students. Kate says returning to St. Margaret’s in a professional role was one of the great privileges of her life.

In 2016, Kate agreed to serve St. Margaret’s again as a member of the Board of Governors, and she has been very generous in support of her school by giving to a variety of initiatives.

Focus on Academics We enjoy sharing photos and stories on social media about the fun we have on campus. Yet our focus remains on educating girls and preparing them to achieve in college and in their life endeavors.

If metrics are the measure, St. Margaret’s is succeeding in this effort. Our 2019 seniors sat for 16 Advanced Placement exams in eight different courses and received college credit through dual enrollment in seven courses at Rappahannock Community College. Between dual enrollment and their AP classes, seniors completed rigorous work that is giving them advanced standing at the college and university level.

On-the-job experiences also prepared our seniors through independent study. Their experiences included exploring biomedical research at the University of Chicago, shadowing a doctor at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital in Richmond, interning with the Marketing Office at Spartanburg Methodist College in South Carolina, and working with first responders at the Chesterfield County Fire and EMS mobile response units.

The class of 2019 was offered more than $800,000 in scholarship awards, and we are excited that each member of the class is now starting a new chapter as a freshman, attending 23 different colleges and universities in 14 states. Many of these institutions are known for their strong math, engineering, and research tracks, such as Michigan State, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and Virginia Tech.

Governor’s School Accepts SMS Junior Outstanding SMS studentscholar Chloe ’21 attended Virginia’s Summer Residential Governor’s School for Humanities as one of 200 gifted students from across the Commonwealth participating in the highly selective program.

Chloe spent four weeks living on campus at Radford University immersed in studies on history, literature, philosophy, anthropology, political science, economics, sociology, psychology, media, and more.

“During my time at Governor’s School, I learned how to think independently and evaluate the patterns present in our society,” Chloe shared. “St. Margaret’s prepared me by opening my eyes to a diversity of ideas and encouraging a respectful discussion of differences.”

#YOLO You Only Live Once— Make It Healthy!

Our co-curricular program was redesigned this year and renamed #YOLO to highlight healthy practices for mind and body. Halfday events were held each trimester where students focused on topics related to healthy life balance.

The interactive sessions broadened students’ knowledge and gave them a chance to reflect on how they might make decisions and changes that could positively affect their well-being.

St. Margaret’s Performing and Visual Arts programs continue to grow and engage students in a broad range of creative endeavors where they explore their talents with beautiful results.

In the performing arts this year, students and staff staged a musical, Cinderella, for three performances played to a full house, showing great things are possible when you believe.

Our talented Treble Choir is gaining recognition regionally for its high-quality performances. They performed regularly for our school community and at local churches and organizations. A highlight this year was their performance during a choral evensong service at the Washington National Cathedral with other schools in the Mid-Atlantic Episcopal School Association. Be St. Margaret’s The St. Margaret’s Athletics program continued to attract and welcome new students. The program maintained its focus on developing athletes with sound character and integrity who are productive team players, committed to succeeding academically and contributing to our school community.

We had another great year of achievements, including the following: For the second consecutive year, Kristen Berry ’19 earned a place on the All League of Independent Schools (All LIS) Volleyball team. Plus, our Director of Athletics, Cynthia Walker ’99, was named Coach of the Year for the fifth time.

Maya ’21 and Zoe ’20 competed in the VISAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Maya finished second in the long jump. Zoe finished fifth in the 55-meter race and seventh in the long jump.

Winning its seventh LIS Championship title in 10 years, the Varsity Scottie Softball team defeated Collegiate 10–0 to claim the league title. Tanner Robertson ’19 was named LIS Softball Player of the Year. Autumn ’22, Carrie Fox ’20, Tanner Robertson ’19, Lauren Stanley ’20, and Zoe ’20 made the All LIS Softball team.

Tanner Robertson ’19 signed to play NCAA Division 1 Softball and is now playing for the Longwood University Lancers. Sasha ’19 committed to Mitchell College and is now playing soccer there for the Mariners.

A new afternoon activities program launched, which gave girls the opportunity to be active and fit. Girls walked and jogged in the 3 Mile Club, participated in Beachbody workout sessions, played Club Tennis, went on Outdoor Adventures, exercised at the YMCA, and focused on having a healthy lifestyle through physical education.

Through a generous donation made by Candace Washing ’90, we are now able to spin on a Peloton bike. Feeling that “healthy people are happy,” Candace remembers jogging and working out to Jane Fonda videos in the Latane hallways while she attended St. Margaret’s. “We didn’t have a workout gym,” says Candace. “Peloton is a very innovative company with professional trainers to help people fit a workout from a live or recorded class into their busy schedules.”

The Sisterhood:

At School and Beyond Ask St. Margaret’s alumnae what they remember and what they carried with them into their careers and lives after their tenure at St. Margaret’s, and the answer is often some variation on the theme of sisterhood. It’s this sense of sisterhood, teamwork, and inclusion that helps girls build confidence at St. Margaret’s and independence in the real world.

In recent interviews, four alumnae discussed their experiences at St. Margaret’s and how those experiences of support, belonging, and challenge prepared them for the workplace and for life.

Keeping Sisterhood Alive in the Workplace Even as a young teen, Jill Johnson Deupi ’87 saw St. Margaret’s as her ticket to a wider world. She enrolled in tenth grade and immediately embraced the challenging and supportive environment.

Her French teacher encouraged her to participate in an exchange program in Paris that turned out to be life changing. When it was time for college, Jill had the confidence to venture to New England.

She pursued a career in arts museums and eventually earned her PhD. Jill currently serves as the Beaux Art Director and Chief Curator at the University of Miami’s Lowe Art Museum.

ADVICE TO SMS SENIORS

You have to be ready for the curve balls and show resilience when things don’t go as planned. Look at those surprises as opportunities.

Looking back on her life at St. Margaret’s, Jill cites “confidence” as the biggest advantage girls experience at an all-girls’ school. “Girls are in an environment where they’re not being judged. They have a sense of empowerment and control. It’s a nurturing place, where girls have room to grow.” She also notes that women need to use some of those same traits in the workplace. “We need to support each other through mentoring and promotions, but also through the small things like general civility and compassion … Because we still don’t have a level playing field and women always need to work harder than men, the women who have succeeded need to show a generosity of spirit and reach out to those who are still coming along.”

Support for Life Choices From the corporate world to at-home parent, Candace Washing ’90 has seen the benefits of her St. Margaret’s experience. The teamwork that she learned while playing soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse at SMS built her selfconfidence, and the supportive atmosphere helped her find her voice. Candace went on to a career at the GAP corporate offices and later at Oracle, parlaying the skills she honed at SMS into a talent for networking and sales.

ADVICE TO SMS SENIORS

Stay flexible. There is a time for everything if you are patient, work hard, and set goals.

When her first child was born, Candace chose to leave the corporate world—at least for a while. But her SMS experiences have played a role in her parenting, too. “Looking back now, I am so grateful for the team experience.

I didn’t realize it at the time, but it helped me in the workplace and now helps me raising my own kids!” Candace notes that the SMS focus on regimen and routine has also played a part in her parenting and her life.

Setting goals and attempting to achieve them while remaining flexible and open to other possibilities are some of Candace’s takeaways from St. Margaret’s.

From Girls’ School to Girl Scouts Jenni Booker Baker ’93 began her career in banking, where she found that women had to be master networkers to compete with the Good Ol’ Boy network. As Jenni progressed in her career, she used her networking skills to reach out to other women and to learn from those who had gone ahead of her. But it was a call from St. Margaret’s—a literal call—that proved to be a turning point in her career. Jenni was asked to take a position in the Development Office at SMS, and that set her on the path to nonprofit fundraising.

After working at SMS for several years, she was recruited by the Girl Scouts of the Commonwealth of Virginia and currently serves as the Vice President of Fund Development.

Failure is a chance to see how you respond.

Jenni credits SMS for developing her skills in communication and collaboration and for providing female role models that helped her build confidence. In commenting on the benefits of being part of an all-girls group, she noted, “What girls’ schools and girls’ organizations—like Girl Scouts—do is prepare girls to be competent and confident.” www.sms.org

Listening and Supporting Liz Wyatt-Brown Green ’65 may not have known it at the time, but when other girls at St. Margaret’s sought her out for her sympathetic ear, she would eventually put those listening skills to good use as a therapist. Liz’s early career working for a major health insurance company was a dose of 1970s reality when she was turned down for a promotion because she was a “smart woman.” But Liz built camaraderie among the women she supervised and later found support in a new job. After a stint of childrearing coupled with volunteer work as an EMT and director of ambulance services in her New Hampshire town, she completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees and then went on to earn a PhD. She worked as a counselor at a boarding school, published a book on multiple personalities, and currently maintains a private practice as a therapist.

ADVICE TO SMS SENIORS Take a gap year and get a job in the real world. See what’s on the other side. Learn about different jobs. When you do go to college, you’ll have some valuable life experience.

What Liz took away from St. Margaret’s was the sense of inclusivity and being part of a female group that valued each other. She noted that SMS “gave me self-confidence and a sense of belonging that I hadn’t felt before.” When applying that attribute to later life, Liz commented, “An all-girls’ school has the advantage of preparing women to be supportive of each other in the workplace.”

Alumnae Association President Passes Baton Every two years, the leadership of the Alumnae Association is passed to the next president. From 2017 to 2019, the alumnae were led by the steady hand of Mary Anne Townsend Hopkins ’69 P’97 ’03.

Mary Anne was a fearless leader who transformed Alumnae Weekend and put the focus on alumnae engagement in school life at SMS. She also championed alumnae giving and helped us reach an increase of 33 percent—more than doubling amounts seen in previous years!

You Spoke—and We Heard You! Many thanks to the 149 St. Margaret’s alumnae across all generations who responded to our online survey in May. Your input will help guide the alumnae program in countless ways!

The majority of respondents were Baby Boomers, and almost three-quarters had been full-time boarding students. More than one-third of the alumnae who responded had other family members who attended SMS, illustrating the strength of the St. Margaret’s legacy.

Alumnae were asked about the first words that came to mind in describing St. Margaret’s. The resulting Word Cloud is a testament not only to the positive memories that the school evokes, but also to the strong friendships and relationships built at St. Margaret’s.

Other survey questions asked more specifically about alumnae’s St. Margaret’s experience and how SMS prepared them for later life. Just over half chose the “Academic Program” as the most important aspect of their SMS experience, with “Fellow Students” as the next most important aspect.

Going Forward . . .

St. Margaret’s will celebrate its 100th anniversary beginning in 2020 and culminating in 2021, our centennial year. Plans for exciting events are underway, including a Centennial Campaign to carry us into our next century of service.
