A Message from the Head of School

As we approach our 100th anniversary in 2021, our mission is alive in all aspects of school life. As an Episcopal girls’ boarding school, we have always helped girls reach their full potential in every area of their lives and instilled in them a desire to make the world a better place.

This year, we developed a strategic plan to guide St. Margaret’s future. Our first strategy was to simplify our actual mission statement to one that expresses more clearly what we do. Although we transformed our original mission statement into a mission statement and a vision statement to express better what we do and what the desired future is for our girls, these new statements do not change who we are as a school.

From research on girls’ learning and our own experience, we know that a girl must develop a healthy self-esteem in order to reach her full potential. To develop that self-esteem, she must feel that she belongs to a community, she must have opportunities to be challenged and supported to believe in herself, and she must have preparation to become her best. These three words—Belong, Believe, Become—are the essentials for her to reach her potential and be inspired to make a better world.

Our Episcopal foundation teaches us to celebrate the uniqueness of each individual. This belief and the fact that we are an all-girls school create a naturally inclusive community where girls know they belong.

Our challenging, but readiness-based curriculum helps girls focus on being themselves, and our honesty about the value of hard work and effort ensures that our girls learn to believe in themselves.

Our skill-building classes, including study skills, our discipline system with clear expectations and consequences, and the girls’ ability to take “safe risks,” like trying out for a sport or starting a club,

propel them to become their best. Through many opportunities to lead and participate in community service, our girls develop the passion to give back.

The faculty and staff here keep our mission in the forefront of their minds as we plan our curriculum, our co-curriculum, our calendar, and even our schedule.

Changes in our world, the rich diversity of our student body, technology, and many other factors cause us to evaluate and re-evaluate our programs regularly.

We must ensure that everything we do aligns with our mission.

As I have had the pleasure to meet alumnae from before my time here, I have heard them say the same things as our recent graduates, like “St. Margaret’s made me who I am today” and “I found my voice at St. Margaret’s.” Yes, St. Margaret’s mission is alive and well. St. Margaret’s girls know who they are, what they can do, and how to do it!

Mission and Vision

Our Mission St. Margaret’s School provides a learning environment where girls know they belong, are challenged and supported to believe in themselves, and prepared to become their best. We inspire girls to reach their full potential and make a better world.

Our Vision The world is a better place because of generations of St. Margaret’s women who found their voice and made a difference in their communities. In a Christian environment, founded on the Episcopal tradition, girls develop honor and character, an appreciation for the uniqueness of each individual, and a desire to give to the world. Girls are challenged to be their best in all areas of their lives. By learning to meet these challenges, they develop confidence, resilience, and strength of character.

In addition to learning academic and life skills, they become independent, creative, and morally courageous women who are effective communicators. St. Margaret’s girls know who they are, what they can do, and how to do it.

Dear St. Margaret’s Family and Friends, It gives me great pleasure to share that we have nearly doubled our Annual Fund giving from $253,000 to more than $500,000 over the past six years. I would like to thank and celebrate the many generous donors who have supported St. Margaret’s School to help us reach this achievement.

Yet, despite the success we are having in growing our Annual Fund, now more than ever, your donations are critical to supporting the financial security of St. Margaret’s. Independent schools, and boarding schools in particular, are reliant on charitable gifts to help sustain the quality of educational experience we must provide to attract students and sustain the school.

2018 Alumna Award The Distinguished Alumna Award is presented each year to an alumna in honor of a lifetime of living the St. Margaret’s philosophy, “As we grow in age, may we grow in grace.” This year, the school made a special exception and elected to present the award to the entire Class of 1968.

The Hannah Mallory Perkins Alumnae in Service Award The Hannah Mallory Perkins Alumnae in Service Award is presented annually to an alumna who has gone above and beyond in service to St. Margaret’s. This Natasha Kollaros Laster ‘93 year’s recipient was Natasha Kollaros Laster ’93. Soon after graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University, Natasha returned to St. Margaret’s to serve as the Director of Residence Life. After working in this capacity for nearly a decade, she also added Associate Admissions Director to her role at SMS.

After nearly 15 years as a member of the faculty, Natasha stepped away to use her knowledge of boarding schools to start her own business, which offers home stays and a life away from schools for international boarding students on extended vacations and school breaks.

Because of her love and dedication to the school, Natasha could not stay away for too long. In the last year, she accepted an invitation to join the St. Margaret’s Board of Governors. She has graciously supported the diverse fundraising initiatives and already been instrumental in offering support to the Office of Admission. It was with great pleasure that St. Margaret’s awarded this year’s award to Natasha Laster.

A special group of faculty and staff deserves recognition for dedicating 25 years or more in service to St. Margaret’s. Their contribution to our students and alumnae is an important part of the school’s legacy. We applaud the longstanding contribution of the following: 25 Years Keith Krusz is our Dean of Faculty, a math teacher, and is affectionately known as Captain Calendar for his mastery at keeping up the “Google,” the complex, ever-changing school schedule we live by.

26 Years The girls love to shoot off rockets, and learn about robots and astronomy in Dr. Richard Kahler’s classes.

And, we are delighted by his comedic commentary and guitar playing at school events. In addition to teaching math and science, Dr. Kahler is our Network Administrator and remembers when there wasn’t email or a network on campus.

26 Years Our Director of Maintenance, Jimmy Townsend has been taking care of buildings and fixing things since his first day on campus. With our historic campus, we truly value his ability to keep things well-oiled and running smoothly.

28 Years Nancy Smith started at SMS as the Business Manager and is now Chief Financial Officer. Last summer, she oversaw renovation of the Library that created a stunning new home for the Woolfolk Center. Her great joy is watching students grow at SMS, an “amazing” evolution she saw in her daughter, Allison, who graduated in 2004.

31 Years Our lead cook, Beverly Green, who is now part of the SAGE dining team, has been with St. Margaret’s since she was 17 years old and started as a dishwasher. She is grateful for all she has learned over her years at SMS. Her beautiful smile and positive attitude never fade, and her fried chicken is the best!

35 Years ViAnn Farmer began her SMS career as a tutor and is now Academic Dean and Director of Studies. She heads up the Wheat Center and is developing our THRIVE postgraduate program. As a teacher and adviser, ViAnn plays an important role in the success of each student. She values church school education and the role it plays in forming young women with strong character who are capable of success.

36 Years Marshall Lloyd is Head of the Foreign Language Department and teaches five levels of Latin. Mr. Lloyd is still excited about how we equip girls with important life skills. “They may not need the hortatory subjunctive,” he says. “But they will need words, be able to express themselves, read critically, and to think.”

38 Years Louise Velletri was first hired as Director of Residents at SMS. Now the Head of the History Department, many consider her the SMS memory keeper. She is inspired by the many changes she has seen take place here over time and how we remain true to our core values of honesty, integrity, and can-do spirit.

42 Years When Cathy Sgroi was hired, she taught three students Trigonometry. She grew in age and grace

SMS Academic Excellence with SMS, from leading the Math Department, serving as Dean of Faculty and Assistant Head of School, to taking the position as Head of School in 2016. She views our diversity as a great asset and promotes our ability to accommodate individual learning styles. She feels every day is full of joy at SMS. Even when there is heartache, girls learn from their experiences here to become their best.

46 Years Shannon Spears began her SMS career as Dean of Residents and is now the Head of the English Department. She feels enriched by her service to the school and sees value in the large number of alumnae who return to work here as faculty and staff. Their dedication and commitment to upholding our honored traditions is something she treasures.

Unlike in years past, today, all seniors take a math course and many girls reach Precalculus, Probability and Statistics, and Calculus in which they excel. Each year, Rappahannock Community College holds math contests in winter and spring. In December 2017, our SMS mathletes took second place out of 17 schools that competed. And, in the spring 2018 contest where 172 students competed from 18 schools, SMS students took first place in Algebra 1 and Geometry.

Life Is Beautiful We lost a dear friend of the school in September 2018, a dedicated faculty member and a talented artist, Konstantina Konstantinova. Konstantina was a Bulgarian-born, American artist who joined our faculty with her husband, Konst, as a teacher and artist-in-residence in 2002.

Affectionately known as the Kons or Mr. & Mrs. K, they founded the Visual Arts program together through their beautiful KonKon partnership by putting their extensive experience, creativity, and skills to work in the classroom, teaching and mentoring through inspiration and example.

Mrs. K was dedicated to her students and the school.

She taught Art History, Fashion Design, Mosaics, Watercolors, Mixed Media, Illustration, Digital Photography, Graphic Design, Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, Advanced Art, Senior Portfolio, and the after school art activities, Art for Community Service and Art Smarts. The results produced young artists who earned acceptances at some of the finest art schools in the country, including Parsons, Pratt, Rhode Island School of Design, Savannah College of Art and Design, Virginia Commonwealth University, and others.

Her passion for promoting and organizing community art lives on at St. Margaret’s with the beautiful Angel of Hope mosaic that surrounds our chapel doors, the Spiritual Circles that adorn our chapel walls, and the student works that brighten our campus.

She mentored and instructed students in creating the Noah’s Ark project in the nursery on the second floor at St. John’s, Hope for the Planet, at Riverside Hospital, Tappahannock, the Town I Love, at the town’s Municipal Building, Peace on Earth, for St. Timothy’s Catholic Church, and many more creative projects.

Mrs. K was beautiful in all ways. She embodied our school’s mission, spreading love, joy, hope, and courage; she worked hard to accomplish great things, and she was a lot of fun. Mrs. K was an SMS sister, and we will always be grateful for her contribution to St. Margaret’s.

Every year they presented fully developed ideas for new courses and community projects. We see them today throughout the school and Tappahannock. I loved these conversations huddled over their models and sketches when we examined resources, participation, and settings.

Living Our Episcopal School Mission Our St. Margaret’s community embraces and promotes the love of God by extending our hand of sisterhood to every student. Rooted in the teachings of Christ and founded on the Episcopal tradition that promotes questioning, tolerance, and inclusion, all members of the community are treated with mutual respect and kindness. Our intentional community promotes character growth in all students and offers a place for girls from many countries to cultivate their voices for the betterment of humanity.

Our core values will sustain and challenge our students throughout their lives. One such value is the awareness of human imperfection and the need for forgiveness. All human beings make mistakes, and our students learn to both accept and offer forgiveness, which is a reflection of the forgiveness granted us through the perfect sacrifice of Christ.

Another core value is the visible expression of compassion and peace by serving those in our community who have extraordinary needs. All students perform community service hours, and the students often gain as much—or more—than those being helped. Moreover, the immense love of God prompts us to seek the best in those around us and to refrain from judgment based on race, gender, religion, political affiliation, orientation, and cultural background.

Additionally, our community setting adheres to an Honor Code that extends our love of God and that specifically requires refraining from lies, the removal of property belonging to others, and cheating rooted in falsehood.

When reflecting the love of God in our community, girls are encouraged to develop their gifts and talents based on the premise that their giftedness derives from God and should be used to make the world a better place. Our girls become young women who know who they are and the reason for their talent in the world. Additionally, their fellowship with the Divine is the beginning of a lifelong journey.

This beautiful phrase from our school prayer is one we hold dear in the St. Margaret’s community. It is an expression of our vision for the future, based on our Episcopal values; a statement of intention for students, faculty and staff, alumnae, and our institution, expressing what we hope to become, in God’s eyes, and in the eyes of the world.

Library Renovation Gives Wheat Center a Beautiful New Home Over the summer of 2018, the Viola H. Woolfolk Library was completely renovated, creating an inspiring new environment for study, collaboration, and learning. Home to the Wheat Center for Innovative Learning, the space retains the essence of a traditional library with a significant upgrade to the building’s technology supports and learning accommodations.

Brody WorkLounge modular stations allow students private work spaces that are technology enabled.

High stools and cubbies along exterior walls give students quiet spaces where they can focus.

Turnstone Buoy active task chairs enable students who learn best while moving to do so without disrupting others.

More of the natural beauty from the riverside of the building is accessible to the learning spaces inside as natural light floods the first floor through the ceilinghigh windows. A calming blue and grey color scheme on the walls and in the upholstery and carpeting mirrors the river landscape and reflects our school colors. Tall stacks for our extensive book collection were replaced with shorter, curved shelves that flow like water through the room.

A large Reading Room, which also serves as a study hall and meeting space, has new dimmable lighting to accommodate audiovisual projection, a 70” high definition television, and surround sound. Portable conference tables can be arranged in multiple configurations to accommodate changing school demands.

St. Margaret’s has a long history of successfully supporting girls’ learning differences, and a priority for the project was to have as much flexibility as possible in the new space. Ergonomic furnishings can be arranged in creative configurations to support individual and group needs while promoting cognitive learning.

Flexibility and productivity in teaching, learning, and living are hallmarks of St. Margaret’s School.

Our renovated Woolfolk Library now provides a dynamic environment where the Wheat Center will further its purpose of challenging and supporting girls to believe in themselves and preparing them to become their best.

Girls who want to have a productive gap year and ensure they excel in college and life can THRIVE at St. Margaret’s in its structured postgraduate program. THRIVE is for girls who want to create a postgraduate year based on their wants, needs, and goals for the future.

“Our approach to teaching girls is increasingly informed by neuroscience and research on adolescent brain development. Advances made through a Chan-Zuckerberg initiative at the Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning at St. Andrews School in Maryland are informing classroom practice. Similar research also informs some of the policies and practices that guide school life, such as what grade level, when, and how much smartphone and device use is allowed by students. Our faculty is learning so much more about how the brain learns, works, and changes in youth, and we are applying this evidence more and more in promoting girls’ intellectual growth at all levels.”

The program offers five focus areas to allow girls to create a unique year of learning, including academics, leadership, experiential opportunities such as internships, travel, and wellness. Some girls may need academic support to help them get into the college of their dreams and do well. Others may need help with developing life skills to ensure they can be independent. They might want to intern and explore future career opportunities, travel, or be a part of an independent study project, but they might not have the connections and the resources to make it happen.

“Without structure and focus, a gap year can be a lost year,” says St. Margaret’s Academic Dean and Director of Studies, ViAnn Farmer. “THRIVE at St. Margaret’s is a transformative postgraduate opportunity for a girl.”

“THRIVE will help a girl fire up her passion for learning once she leaves high school. We will provide valuable real-life experiences where she can learn and develop important skills and encourage her to make sound choices, especially as she grows more independent,” Farmer adds.“ And, we’ll teach her to put them to use in ways that will help her excel in college and be ready to compete and be productive in the workforce.”

Over half of our students played a part in staging the musical, Annie, JR. in January, and it was the biggest show staged at SMS. Two performances played to a packed house, and we all left singing.

Our Scottie athletes showed what it means to Be St. Margaret’s, representing our school well, on the field and off, as studentathletes. They competed in Volleyball, Field Hockey, Cross Country, Basketball, Swimming, Soccer, and Softball. Some of their achievements include the following: •

Kristen Berry ’19 earned a place on the All-League of Independent Schools (LIS) Volleyball championship team, and our Director of Athletics, Cynthia Walker ’99, was named Coach of the Year for the fourth time.

Our Softball team won the LIS regular season and the tournament for the fourth year. Carrie Fox ’20, Sara Pierce ’18, Heather McMahon ’18, Lauren Stanley ’20, Tanner Robertson ’19, and Zoe Truxon ’20 made the All-LIS team, and our Softball coach, Rob Pierce, won Coach of the Year.

Carrie Fox, Sara Pierce, Lauren Stanley, and Tanner Robertson were also named to the All-State Softball team.

Swim team members, Mackenzie Burckbuchler ’18, Gracie Byrd ’22, Lily Blackshaw ’18, and Shae Lynn Sebetzki ’19 qualified for the State finals in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay.

The River’s Significance to St. Margaret’s After experiencing her first River Days, current freshman Rebecca Meberg ’22 reflected on St. Margaret’s mission and its connection to the river we love in writing the following essay.

The Rappahannock River at St. Margaret’s is a huge draw for many of the girls; however, it also represents St. Margaret’s. The mission of St. Margaret’s is summarized in three verbs: belong, believe, and become. The river symbolizes the words belong, believe, and become and represents their purpose in a student’s life through the journey the river takes to the ocean.

The river starts off as a small stream and gradually starts to grow as its tributaries and other waters feed into it. As the river is made up of many different streams, so is the community at St. Margaret’s. People of all backgrounds make up the school, yet all students find their place at St. Margaret’s. Students use the diversity to their advantage, creating new bonds and learning more about themselves through the exchange of cultures. The sense of belonging to a community carries them through life, like the river enters in the bay and then the ocean.

While the different molecules in the river mix together, they remain the same. The students, although mixed with many others, also remain themselves. As the molecules of the river become part of the ocean, the girls at St. Margaret’s know that they are a part of the world. The students learn how to believe in themselves through the diverse culture.

The diverse culture shows girls how no one is exactly alike, and it is better to be different because in this accepting community people know they won’t be judged. In addition to the river molecules staying themselves, students learn to believe in themselves.

By the end of a girl’s St. Margaret’s career, she is expected to know her potential. The student’s knowledge of her potential resembles how the river starts off as a stream, but by the end it becomes part of an ocean. After a girl’s St. Margaret’s experience, she heads to college, which is equivalent to the river feeding into the bay.

Soon the students will become part of the world, and the river a part of the vast ocean. However, the skills the students learn at St. Margaret’s will carry them through life. The students are constantly building on their skills, which aids their self-confidence as well. Students know there is no limit to what they are capable of because of the constant push to do better while discovering themselves in the process. Students always are striving to become better, even when they are no longer students of St. Margaret’s.

St. Margaret’s guides girls to become self-confident, independent and self-driven. The river represents the students’ journey through St. Margaret’s as they learn to belong, believe, and become. At St. Margaret’s the river provides an opportunity for reflection.
