EDITORIAL What a pity the media beaded the New Zealand-wide interest in education "Back to Basics." Surely a backward approach. It was stated that it is essential to have a firm foundation in the 3R's, Reading, Writing and, Rithmetic for without these 3 skills it is impossible to go on learning. They are needed not only in primary and secondary schools but also in employment. Others have included in the basics, personal qualities, positive attitudes and also survival skills which are both personal and social. We are fortunate that social education, discussion and debates are all included in our education programme at St. Margaret's College. which gives us an opportunity to understand and develop these skills.

in New Zealand is about 1:35 which makes it impossibJe to give children the attention that they need. We at St. Margaret's CoJlege are lucky in a small teacher to pupil ratio which makes it possible for girls to be more fully extended. The high academic sporting and cultural levels at the school prove this.

Society is in a state of flux; what is basic today may not be tomorrow. Today's frills may be tomorrow's basics, as can be seen with the introduction of Maori studies, an "extra" today, but maybe a "core" subject tomorrow. What we can be certain of is that the moral standards and social skills we learn at St. Margaret's College are fundamental knowledge that we will appreciate all our lives.

In order to learn it is known that we need nourishment and stimulation. But at present the average teacher pupil ratio

Miss Molly Mullan H~ 1964-1979

When, fifteen years ago, Miss Mullan came from India, where she had been Principal of a school of some 2,000 pupils, to St. Margaret's with its roll of 500, the change and contrast were more than geographical or numerical. It was typical of her adaptability and versatility that she approached the challenge here with the same vigour and foresight as had distinguished her career in India.

To enumerate all Miss Mullan's attributes would require a volume, not a page (or two). Her original wit, penetrating observations on stage and off, total devotion to her job, and indefatigable effort have been obvious. Perhaps less well known are her many personal kindnesses; patience with the wayward; the equality of treatment meted out to all, regardless of 'social' status and her tireless efforts, through personal example, to induce girls to keep the School grounds tidy.

A compulsive learner herself, Miss Mullan has always maintained that examination success is within reach of any girl who consistently works, an assertation vindicated by the excellent pass record of boarders, with their disciplined work patterns.

By her accessibility to both girls and staff Miss Mullan has avoided the ten-

sions which can so easily develop in a large establishment when problems are not freely discussed. Her availability and approachability have created an atmosphere of openness and mutual sharing essential to, but not always evident in, democratic institutions. And this she achiev• ed without diminution of her authority.

Few headmistresses can have been so continually and completely identified with every department of school life and so cognizant of the needs and activities of individuals as has Miss Mullan. The ubiquitousness of her presence astonishes many. "Whence it cometh and whither it goeth" none can foretell!

The Strong Christian emphasis which has marked Miss Mullan's regime is neither pious nor sentimental, but based upon a firm faith and a strong sense of man's responsibility before God. It is significant that two of her favourite Bible passages are Daniel, Chapter 3 and St. Matthew 25-31-46.

She leaves a task which, as one eminent educator has said, can never be completed. The results of her efforts will be seen in the lives of those amongst whom she has laboured.

FROM MISS MULLAN themselves in a career while the biology notes are still not completed. We dream of parks, but forget the litter under our feet.

Out of our dreams the future is born.

But we must learn to dream while we are working and not forsake the present tasks for the dreams. In fact, I think I must write my own book on preparing for the future-Prepare, but not too hard, because after all the present is all we have.

I want to thank you all for the past, and my wish for you is that you can enjoy the present to the full.

During the last year or two I have seen various television programmes on preparing for retirement. I also bought a little book about it. And now I find I have overdone it. I have prepared with such care and enthusiasm that I find it really difficult to apply myself to the present task of tidying up. I would love just to walk off to all the good things I have prepared.

It occurred to me this morning that this is what we are doing all the time.

From the ADDRESS at PRIZEGIVING of the CHAIRMAN of the BOARD.

It is fitting to recall that the school year opened with a short and simple ceremony when our Bishop blessed the new Molly Mullan Wing, and it is equally fitting to recall that the school year virtually came t an end yesterday with our Carol Ser-

RETIREMENT OF PRINCIPAL: butes that it is not easy to point to the one which is the most outstanding. Some will say it is her devotion to the interest of the girls under her care; others will say it is her organising ability; others might say it is her sense of humour, sometimes impish, but always kind; some wi11say it is her initiative in developing new subjects such as Japanese; some will say it is the magnetic force of her Christian personality. We can all say, with regret, that when she goes, she will leave a space which will be hard to fill. There wi11 be a more fitting occasion towards the end of next term when people more able than I will have the opportunity of expressing our thanks to Miss Mullan ...

Towards the end of the first term. Miss Mullan informed me privately that it was her wish to retire in approximately 12 months' time. This was communicated to the Board and the news was received with considerable regret. As most of you will know, Miss Mullan came to us in 1964, and when she leaves us in May next, she will have been our principal for 15 years.

Miss Mullan followed two outstanding principals, Mrs Young and Miss Crasher.

In the 14 years that she has been with us, she has in every way lived up to the glowing reports which came in at the time of her appointment from several parts of the world. Miss Mullan has so many attri-

Prize Giving, December 1978.

In the following May, 1 arrived at a school which was ready to grow.

One of the features of New Zealand education during the last 30 years, and particularly during the last ten, has been a shift of emphasis in requirements. I do not mean a relaxing of standards, although this has also happened in some schools, if we can believe what we read in the newspapers-and I am not adding another chapter to the "Back to Basics Saga." Let me give you examples. In foreign languages; grammatical structure and vocabulary are no longer sufficient: a knowledge of the life and customs of the people who speak the language, and some idea of their culture, literature and history are also required. In Science, a knowledge of facts must be accompanied by a grasp of the principles on which the facts are based. In English, standard literature is not the only type of language studied. Children are required to be creative as well as grammatically accurate. In Social Studies, lists of dates, and capes and bays are not sufficient. Some understanding of the way people live and why they choose to live where they do, is also required. In Mathematics, to mechanical accuracy must be added a group of fundamental mathematical concepts. Now although some people insist that accuracy in spelling and arithmetic has been sacrificed for creative drama and discussions, which Miss Corder once described as the pooling of ignorance. others argue that young people nowadays are better informed and have a wider general knowledge.

Actually, I suppose both points of view can be justified, because the fact remains that children entering school have the same basic inherited equipment as any other large group of children for thousands of years; and if wider knowledge is required of them, they probably do if they not grasp it s~ thoroughly-and are busy studying man in relation to his environment they haven't as much time to

learn 13 times table, or remember so many stories and legends. In addition, instead of occupying their spare time reading, clever children have a much wider range of activities open to them today.

We also have to remember that thirty years ago not such a high proportion of the population arrived at Secondary school and fewer girls than boys reached the Sixth Form. As the Secondary school population increases it is from the less academic group that the increase comes, and this alone accounts for a drop in average achievement. Now more girls than boys pass University Entrance, perhaps people will be able to feel that Secondary standards are rising.

One other great change I see as I look back. Fifteen years ago schools were left, more or less to get on with their teaching -basically of things which children are not likely to learn away from schoollike grammar and geometry and the skills of aquiring information. But during that time we have had the Beetles here in Christchurch and following them a whole new cult of youth music, entertainment, dress and behaviour. The influence of the parish church has altered and in many cases, weakened. The Church Hall no longer provides a rendezvous for young people at the weekends. Family life in many cases has changed or disappeared. and the adult community has taken fright at what young people take for normal behaviour. So there is hardly a topic which does not have a pressure group insisting that this thing must be taught in schools-things that children used to learn from their parents, or at their youth cJub or at their church-changing a tyre or fixing a fuse, outdoor education, mountain safety, care of the environment, the favourite trilogy sex, drugs and alcohol, morals, religion, budgeting and banking -and there will be also a pressure group insisting that this thing, whatever it is, should not be taught in schools. So the

long-suffering school principal, bearing in mind that children are no cleverer than they were 30 years ago and that the school day is no longer, that probably more than half his pupils do not have the kind of home that some people invisage when they claim that it is the right and privilege of the home to teach certain things to children, sorts over his daily mail and tries to decide whether his pupils should learn about banking or social service, about family law or changing a fuse. Whatever decision he makes must be wrong, and if he does not decide, that is wrong too. And if by any chance anyone does approve of his decision, it will be for the wrong reason ...

And what else has changed? Behaviour has changed. Up to about ten years ago I would have said that at all times in history and in all countries, it was assumed that the adults in the community, and more particularly the adults in a child's family, had a clear idea of what children were "to do and how they were to behave.

Tt was assumed that the young people in the community would conform to certain patterns of behaviour and speech and attitude. and each community has its own way of achieving the conformity and dealing with those who stepped out of line. This trainin~ did not necessarily have anything to do with restricti~g fre~dom of thought. although sometimes 1t did ....

But we saw whole nations brainwashed into attitudes of mind from which all freedom of thought was obliterated. We saw the Nazis and the Fascists and we have even seen a whole huge nation treating as ultimate wisdom the words of one man and now while the processions still file past the sarcophagus, the nation is learnin<?:to believe that these words were after all not infallible.

We have seen societies in which children do as they like till they are 7 or 8 and then they learn their place. We know of societies where there is a deliberate training period before initiation into the adult community. I do believe that there is nothing new under the sun and I therefore believe that the present day abdica-

tion of the adult community from enforcing its standards on children, must have happened before in history, but I do not know when, if it has happened before, it passed, and I therefore believe that it will pass again. It seems unbelievable that vast numbers of parents make no demands of behaviour or obedience on their children that if the children get caught stealing or committing acts of vandalism the parents are either not interested or tell us we must not blame the children. Many parents do not know where their children are, or who they are with and manage to persuade themselves that they are teaching children to make their own decisions. to exercise freedom wisely. No one allows a toddler to walk into a fire, so that he can make his own decision.

Surely at every stage the whole knack is learning to exercise freedom within ri_gi~ limits. A mature adult sets the r1g1d limits for himself. and an even more mature adult will allow his God to set the limits for him. But children have still to learn that limits exist, and that they mean protection and safety.

What is alJowed in your house? Smoking is not such a problem. except perhaps among fourth formers who are still in the showing-off stage. Sixth and seventh formers have usually grown beyond that. But what about alcohol? A recent survey of all high schools throughout New Zealand revealed certain changes in the drinking patterns of their pupils.

Children begin drinking much younger. There is an increasing consumption of spirits and wine rather than beer. Access to alcohol is incredibly easy. Some school activities have had to be curtailed because it is assumed by the pupils that these activities will of course be accompanied by heavy drinking, and finally. on the whole parents have opted out of responsibility. The survey done by the girls in Forms 6 and 7 also reveal the same trends. They consider that parents should take more care. but I may say they are thinking not of their own parents, but the parents of children in lower forms.

I do not blame the parents. There can never have been a time in history when 22

commitment to it. It is not easy to do either one without trespassing on the thoughts of those girls who are looking for the other. But this is what I believe we must try to do. The girls are within their rights to take offence if they are allowed to leave school not knowing the main tenets of Christian belief, and they may be disappointed if they have looked for help towards a commitment, and have not found it.

And now I want to take another look into the past, to December 1965. By that time I had been here 5 terms, and I was very homesick for India. I am not sure whether I was missing the heat, the curry and rice, or whether I was comparing your Trust Board with that School Board in India, which worked so much more smoothly. It consisted of 3 Bishops and myself. I was the convenor and I tried to remember to convene a meeting every two years or so. Whatever it was, I went to India for a holiday. I wanted to find out if I had made as big a mistake as I thought, leaving India to come to St. Margaret's. When I arrived there, I slipped into my old work exactly as if I had never been away-for Christmas is not a holiday time in India. The thing that struck me was the immense care that the staff lavished on the girls, and although I would have loved to stay in that place. with its 2,000 girls and the loving atmosphere and the phenomenal academic results, I decided that I would come back and try to foster the same features here.

A place where we could all team to consider one another. and listen to one another. where that friendliness would draw the best out of us an, whether in games. or studies or personality. Sometimes I think we have all failed miserably, but every now and then I see something which makes me feel that there is hope.

It is my firm belief that good academic results do not happen by chance, nor even by good teaching and diligent work. I am sure that good results have something to do with goodness, though I am not sure how to put this in words, and I am certain that our splendid record of academic and sporting achievement both arise

such pressures were exerted in ordinary homes, when parents had so much to cope with - so far to travel every day, so many things to do every day. There is no time to see that children can sit properly at a dining table-only to be thankful that they can feed themselves. No time to talk to them, only to be thankful that they haw~the T.V. to watch.

Somehow we all have to make time to learn to consider one another. Children must learn to think of their parents, and to realise the cold hard fact that whatever they think of their friends, in the end, in real trouble, the only persons to whom they can tum are their parents.

And parents must think of their children, and perhaps give up some of their activities, make time and face the unpopularity of setting limits around those children so that eventually they may be truly free ....

Many people, if we can believe the letters, in the newspapers, have taken fright, one way or the other, at the very tentative provision in the Johnson Report, for what is called training in spiritual values. The fact that any provision at all is even suggested, is a great move forward, but let's face it, there is not going to be an that much time for specific spirtual training, whatever is meant by that term. While it is of course an excellent thing for everyone to be aware of the spiritual doctrines of the great philosophies and religions of the world, the study of comparative religion cannot be tossed off in an hour a week. We have to decide how best we can use that time, and it seems to me, if I may put it in a negative way, that we do the girls a great disservice if we allow them to leave a church school not knowing the doctrines of the church. There are always two aims to hold in balance. One is to present Christian Doctrine as you would present Hinduism or Islam or Buddhism, as attractively as possible with just the added urgency that we live in a social system which has its roots in Christianity, even if its members are not Christians. And the second aim is to help those girls who wish it, to a deeper understanding of the Faith, and a 23

tion cards, looked after hundreds of candidates just before confirmation services.

She has trained the prefects for the Founders' Day Service each year, and trained the readers in the Carol Service-and this may be a surprise to you-she has composed the witty verses and parodies that have been a feature of staff parties. Miss Tutill has been a wonderful guide to the girls, a delightful personality in the staff room, and I count her as a close personal friend. I do not feel I will miss her because I will soon follow her into retirement; but the school will never find another Doris Tutill ....

I want to take this opportunity of mentioning in public the school's indebtedness to Miss Corder. Here and there you meet a person who devotes all her considerable talents unsparingly in the service of others, and Miss Corder is one of these. There cannot be a single girl or a single member of the staff who is not indebted to Miss Corder for her competence, her kindness and her humour. She is one of this generation's great teachers, and no amount of praise can do her justice, for her price is above rubies.

from an atmosphere where the real concern is the individual people. And although examination success is not quite respectable in educational circles nowadays, I believe that in the school where concern and integrity are important, the achievements will follow ...

Tonight we have the sad task of saying goodbye to Miss Tutill. She has been on the staff teaching Divinity and Art for 25 years. She of all of us, has the ability to help children to a deeper understanding of their faith and there must be hundreds in this hall tonight who remember her lessons with gratitude. She has developed Art in an amazing way from a core craft requirement to a full examination course.

History of Art is one of the most popular subjects in Forms 6 and 7. Next year, thanks to the foundation laid by Miss Tutill, we can offer a full Practical Art programme for University Entrance.

Miss Tutill bas been our announcer at sports, and concerts and mannequin parades. She has been the one to advise us on colour and furnishings and pictures. It is her hand that has written the inscription for gifts and presentations. all these years.

THE PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION

The main function of the P.T.A. is to provide liason between the College's Staff and the Parents. by providing regular opportunities for Staff and Parents to get together. A further function is of course the raising of funds and the disbursement of such funds for the benefit of the College.

The first meeting held on the 30th April consisted of a talk illustrated with slides

by Dr Morgan Fahey. His subject was 'The Drinking Driver.' No-one who attended this meeting left without being affected by the powerful arguments put forward for curbing the drinking driver.

The middle term meeting held on the 29th June. consisted of a general discussion on educational matters entitled "Back to Basics or Forward to Fundamentals." The Committee thanks the Staff Members who so eloquently put forward their points of view and those of the Departments they represented. Parents were left in little doubt as to the attention given

by Staff to basic fundamentals. The opportunity was also taken to farewell Mrs Anderson who taught in the Junior school for many years.

Early in the year the P.T.A was made aware of the extremely poor state of repair of the Junior School building in Springfield Road. Committee representatives to the College Board pressed successfulJy for a shift back to the main school. The old Art and Geography Block, suitably converted. will be available for the First Term in 1979. The P. T.A. feels the right decision has been made and has confidence that the Junior School will thrive in its new surroundings.

Plans are well underway for the building of an adventure playground near the new Junior School site. The Committee will need active support from Parents to assist with this project in the New Year.

Another P.T.A. pro_iect is the provision of solar heating for the swimming pool.

Funds have been made available during the year for furnishings in the 5th

THE ENDOWMENT FUND

The year 1978 is a notable one for the Endowment Fund, for it was announced at the Annual General Meeting in September that the Fund now stands at $20,000. As a result the Trustees were able to hand over to Miss Mullan the sum of $1,500 to be used at her discretion for the benefit of the School.

This Fund. the only one which at present exists to provide some independent financial support for the School, was begun in 1963 through the vision and enthusiasm of an Old Girl, Miss Gwen Rankin. Since it was set up, the loyal and continuing support of the Old Girls' Association and its various branches as well as that of a great number of individual Old Girls, members of staff, parents and friends of the School, has ensured its steady growth. In addition the Fund has benefitted from a number of legacies, the most recent being a bequest of $1,000 by the late Mr C. S. Peate. A foundation trustee, Mr Peate supported the Fund most generously, not only at its inception but also with his wise counsel which continued until his death. His legacy is a tangible expression of his faith in the future of the school to which he had sent his daughters. The present trustees of the Fund are Mrs Mary Stammers-Smith, Mr J. H. Pickles, Mr J.M. Hargreaves, Dr T. Shailer Weston and Mrs Isobel Matson.

(Mrs Myrle Dendle recently retired because of ill health). All have had a long connection with the School either as pupils and Old Girls, or as parents. They are confident that the Fund will continue to grow and that Miss Rankin's goal of $100,000 wiJl be achieved. What such an amount could provide by way of interest, 33

SPRINGFIELD ROAD NOTES

SANCTUARY NOTES

1978 has been a year of changes, with Mrs M. J. Anderson retiring after fifteen years of teaching in the Infant Department and Mrs Simonson taking her place.

The decision has been made to move the Junior School back to the main site, and although we have been happy at Springfield Road for eleven years, we look forward to our more convenient situation.

Generous giving during the year provided $187 at the Maundy Service and $80 for the Save the Children cent-a-meal project. Stanrard Four girls organized a Lucky Dip raising $20 for the Southland Flood Relief and Harvest Festival gifts went to the Rehua Boys' Hostel.

The Swimming and Athletic Sports, held on sunny days, were enjoyed by aU. and parents and friends were welcomed to an Open Day. The year ended with the Carol Service and Prize Giving.

Chapel Affairs have run smoothly this year. Charity has been a major concern as usual, our first gift being the produce from the Harvest Festival. During Lent we raised we11 over $1,000 for various charities as welJ as our sponsorship of three children through the Save the Children Fund. We gave to the Telethon, and a Direct Giving Service in the third term enabled us to support the Flood Relief Appeal in Southland.

In April the Bishop confirmed eightytwo senior girls and later in the year a further sixty-eight girls became communicants. The mid-weekly communion services, (at 7 a.m. on Wednesday and 1 p.m. on Fridays), have continued this year and are attended mainly by seniors.

Once again the Founders' Day Service with its symbolic candle lighting drew many Old Girls back to school and some returned at 8.45 the next morning to the Old Girls' Communion Service.

It has been a disappointment to some fourth and fifth formers that the boarders have not attended services either at Christ's College or St. Andrew's this year.

However not an our services have been at school, we have visited St. Mary's, St. John's and St. Michael's and we have also attended the choral Latin Mass at the Cathedral. During the winter term we moved into the Molly Mullan Wing commonroom for our services because of the more effective heating system. However, some girls felt that due to theJ resulting informality the 'religious atmosphere' was lost.

SCHOOL COUNCIL

The School Council has not been altogether successful this year. It has had its share of discouraging problems and does not seem to have much standing in the school.

The form representatives began vigorously, discussing new and useful ideas, but by the end of the year enthusiasm had dwindled. Perhaps some points were not being adequately referred to classes and discussed properly. Debated issues that were carried out were the awarding of house points for Duke of Edinburgh 34

The sixth and seventh formers enjoyed a series of discussions led by Mr Acland during the second week in Lent.

A singing group from St. Peter's, Upper Riccarton also joined us and a group of seventh formers later attended a youth service at St. Peter's, at their invitation.

I would like to thank our chaplain, Mr Botting, for his endless patience and also the House Prefects and members of the Santuary Guild for their help.

Special thanks go to my assistant Gill Hunter-Wright for all the extra help and support slre has given me this year.

1978 bas seen the ranks of senior Librarians expand beyond the numbers of previous years. Although we are not claiming that the library was better organised, it did lead to the traditional Librarians' Dinner, and highlight of the library year, becoming the 'Librarians' Evening. In producing 'Rinse the Blood Off My Toga,' a farcical re-enactment of the death of Julius Caesar, we endeavoured to reveal our acting talents. These were clearly obvious, a long with several impromptu cuts! Our guest speaker, Mr H. Lavac, a librarian from Canterbury University, made interesting comments on libraries of the future. We concluded the evening with supper.

I wish to thank the many girls involved in the running of the Library and especially my deputy, Philippa Lohrey.

THE LIBRARY

The congenial atmosphere and the abundance of periodicals, fiction and research material continue to attract many to the Library. During the winter months there has been standing room only with the numbers present reaching a hundred in the lunch hour, many of whom came not only for the literature but also for the warmth!

This year has also seen the addition of a reference room-a reflection of the emphasis placed on research in the curriculum. It provides an invaluable facility for everyone. Mrs Smart's efficiency and flair ensures the successful working of the Library. Mrs Fairgray is a wonderful assistant, working in the reference section.

Mrs Brangwin has been working for some months on the Library catalogue in order that it may become a Master Catalogue for all school resources. When completed it will be a valuable asset to staff and pupils. Mr Botting has continued to work in the Bindery, providing the Library with a very necessary service.

More than 800 books have been added to the shelves during the year and many generous donations have been received.

ART ROOM NOTES

"Please be brief," the editors say. So shall it be. But how to achieve brevity when one would wish to review twentyfive years? Perhaps it has all been saidor should have been!

Suffice now to comment that, whatever the state of other areas of education, in the realm of art there is an atmosphere of buoyancy and expectation. No need for a call back to basics, for most art teachers have never deserted them. And now, with expanding syllabuses, increasing technical proficiency of teachers, and the inexhaustible inventiveness of the young, the future holds immense promise.

May Mr Sanders, with his considerable expertise in many fields, find the Art Department as rewarding as has this writer.

cation of this group, who have led such a busy musical life. Some of these girls attended the South Island Secondary School's Choral course in the May holidays and performed Mozart's great 'Coronation Mass.'

The Fourth Form choir members serve an "apprenticeship' to the Senior choir.

They sang, assisted by some seniors, the anthem 'Our Father God' by Harold Greenhill for the confirmation service in the first term.

The Third Form choir produced some good work for the concert, and membership here provides valuable trainjng for other school choirs. There is a noticeable increase in musical maturity as the • girls move up each year.

Forms I and II again performed at the Primary School's Music Festival, one of the most successful in recent memory.

Sian Bourhill, Margot Button, and Shelly Spang sang in the special groups and Paige Toomer played in the exciting creative music sequence. Philippa Barr and Kirsten Taylor were chosen for instrumental groups.

In April a number of girls from the third, fourth and senior ·:i:wirs were chosen to attend the Teachers' College Choral Course. In the same month the whole school assembled for an entertaining hour with Steve Rosen berg, Jeff Scholes and a host of early instruments which included the recorder family and the lute. ln October, Mr Rodgers, a member of the School Board. gave us a bagpipe recital. Members of the cast of last year's performance of 'The Gondoliers' enjoyed another performance of the opera by a local society.

The Orchestra remains a small hut hardworking group, under the baton of Mr Boardman. They played at the Christ's College assembly in the first term. the main work being Percy Grainger's 'Handel in the Strand'. In the second term Miss Kerr rehearsed them for the major work. Mozart's A major Piano Concerto.

MUSIC

The Senior Choir started the year with a record roll of over one hundred, which gradually settled to a more manageable seventy-five as the girls discovered how much work was involved.

Each year is unique in character and in the first term new members became acquainted with the standard repertoire and the choir developed its qualities as a group. They led the singing at the Harvest Festival, and later at the Maundy Thursday Service where the anthem was Mozart's 'Ave Verum.' The A Cappella choir sang their favourite 'Drop. drop slow tears' by Gibbons.

The choir have contributed to Anglican worship outside the school and have been warmly welcomed at St. James', Riccarton, at St. Michael's and at All Saints', Sumner, where they sang a new anthem, 'O Lord God' by Percy Buck.

This year's major work was Mozart's 'Mass in G.' The performance with Christ's College in August was a great success. On the same programme our choir sang two extracts from Pergolesi's 'Stabat Mater.'

The Mass was repeated in late October in the Christchurch Cathedral. This was an inspiring and an historic occasion, the service being entirely in Latin.

A week later the Senior Choir led the Founders' Day Service at which the anthem was L. J. White's 'A prayer of St. Richard of Chichester.' The following morning they sang with the Old Girls in their annual Communion service.

A new descant to 'O come, 0 come Immanuel' was learnt for the Carol Service, and the Advent Service at Tai Tapu was the last 'outside' engagement for many girls completing a busy two or three years in the Senior Choir.

The A Cappe11a choir of twenty girls broke new ground in entering the Bank of New South Wales Chamber Music competition, the first time it has been open to choral groups. Although unplaced they gave a most satisfying performance of three works by Zoltan Kodaly. Special mention should be made of the extra dedi36

performances of a Handel flute concerto, the second one being at St. Margaret's.

Some members played the accompaniment for the 'Mass in G.' The girls always show willingness and enthusiasm when adding new musical ventures to an already crowded programme. Our thanks to those who are leaving after several years of devoted service. May they build on their experiences here and find further enjoyment in music as a recreation.

RACHEL de LAMBERT LITERARY SOCIETY This year, with the help of Mr Smart and Miss Tebay, another ten girls, mainly sixth formers, joined with a group of seventh formers from Christ's College to form the 1978 Literary Society.

Early in the first term a meeting took place at Mr Smart's bach at Whitecliffs.

We were introduced to and required to find out a little about each other, and then with the help of Mr Michael Harlow we spent a very interesting afternoon, the theme of which was writing poetry. The day ended with a barbecue dinner.

To celebrate William Shakespeare's birthday a second meeting was held, at which Peter Fitzgerald was invited to chair the society.

Extracts from Shakespeare's works were read out and discussed, and supper was provided by the boys.

At a meeting at Mr Smart's in the seccond term short stories from a nationwide competition were read aloud by invited guests and gave all present an insight into the writing of amateur New Zealand authors. Another meeting followed soon after. A talk was presented by Julie Muir and Diana Carson on Sylvia Plath, and then a University student, who had recently had her first short story published in "Landfall; read to us more of her short stories and this provoked a great deal of discussion.

Perhaps the highlight of the year took place during Christ's College Sports Weekend when the society presented a programme on the Sunday night, to celebrate the opening of the Christ's College English Department's "Little Theatre."

It was decided that it would be a "Victorian Evening," the theme of the first half being "Victorian England" and of the second "Canterbury 1978." All members took part in various kinds of Victorian dress provided by Mrs Barton and we greatly enjoyed participating although

DEBATING CLUB The team's first competitive debates came with the summer Quadrangular Tournament. The team was: Terry McGarvey, Clare Mahoney and Rachel de Lambert. We enjoyed the time spent at Rangi Ruru and were successful. We debated first against St. Hilda's the motion 'Youth is wasted on the Young' and then against Craighead 'To be or not to bethat is the question.'

After a pause in outside competition partly owing to a default from Waimea College, we were drawn to debate with Christ's College on their home ground.

The motion was 'That the Presentation of Honours to New Zealand citizens should be continued.' We lost the debate by seven points but stood up well to the usual ColJege antics.

We debated within the school against an Old Girls' team. The school team won, the motion being 'That consistency is a virtue.' We also debated in mixed teacher pupil teams the motion 'Life was easier for our parents' which, contrary to popular opinion was proved incorrect by the negative team. I would like to thank those staff members who joined' us and Terry for judging. We have also enjoyed many 'parachute' and impromptu debates in the lunch hours.

We have enjoyed having Terry McGarvey, our American Field Scholar. as a member of the school team this year, and have been greatly encouraged by her experienced approach and her sense of humour. l am sure everyone wilJ want to join 37

our backs became sore from having to sit so 'properly' and straight. Miss Kerr accompanied some of us in the singing of two Victorian songs.

The ~hird term. has been extremely

busy, with a meetmg of some description every day of the week. We have also had an evening meeting with the groups from Christ's College and Rangi Ruru.

This was very successful and we have made valuable links with these schools.

During the year several girls have gone to I.S.C.F. camps and camps at Living Springs and some of the leaders have come to talk and show films.

It is with much regret we leave Christian Fe1lowship, but we hope and pray that the good work will continue. Finally we give special thanks to our organiser, co-ordinator and encourager, Mrs Webster.

CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP This year Christian Fellowship has had an "overhaul" with a new home, a new image, and lots of new members.

We got off to a good start with a barbeque at the Lohreys. Later in the first term we carried out "Operation Contact" which involved going out into the school.

Through it we became aware of many needs within the school.

The highlight of the year, especially for senior members came in the May holidays when two seniors were sent as delegates to "Sonlight," a nationwide I.S.C.F. conference, held for a week in Levin. During that week we were living with 260 secondary school Christians as well as Scripture Union workers and many senior advisors from all parts of the country. :'Son!ight" was an extremely encouragmg time for personal growth, both as individuals and representatives of the school, as we received new ideas and encouragement for the group. Much prayer and financial help from the C.F. enabled us to go and they raised half our fare.

During the first and second term we had frequent visits from the local Scripture Union Worker. Nina Coulthard. As a result our numbers grew from 12 to 40 in the first term. The growth was also aided by Mrs Webster.

Early in the second term we gained valuable ideas after going to the film "The Hiding Place." During this term we formed a prayer group and eel] groups for all ages. Mrs Webster also took school parties to Youth For Christ rallies. At the end of the term we sadly said goodbye to Nina. A highlight of this term was a meeting with the Girls' High Christian Fellowship group. It was a great success.

CHESS NOTES 1978 has been a busy year for the chess club. During the first term we had two informal matches with Rangi Ruru both of which we won but it was not the winning that was important. The experience of playing competition chess was extremely valuable to new team members. Also during the first term we had two matches against the staff, one of which we won.

Through this experience the team members very quickly realised that everyone had a different style of playing.

The second term was taken up with Inter-school matches. We came ninth (out of ten) in the competition but the team was enthusiastic, which made all the difference to their games.

During the year the outside board has not been used a great deal but with improved weather it will see a lot more use.

Many thanks to Dr. Mann who has encouraged and supported the team in every possible way and to Mr Twidle who has had many challenge matches with individual team members. My thanks also go to aII members of the club for their enthusiasm and especially to my deputy Caroline Summers for her support and encouragement throughout the year.

joining and organising and encouraging them in their various activities. Fourth form girls have been very enthusiasticthree quarters of our new enrolments this year have come from that age group.

These will be the girls who keep the award going in future years at St. Margaret's.

Many girls find the chance to investigate different careers and services within the community. Some of their activities have been life saving, first aid and mountain safety courses, veterinary work, care of aged patients of Bristol House and St. George's Hospital, musics, fishing, riding and stamp-collecting. There have been two separate Gold award tramps, one to Banks Peninsula, and one in Marlborough, but though few other qualifying expeditions have been completed. the compulsary pre-expedition training has been going on throughout the year. In the winter term, Jennifer Weston and I went to Te Wai Pounamu Maori Girl's College for our Residential Qualification. This was a tremendous experience, and one which we hope to broaden to include others in the school.

This year House points have been given for awards. Thus Bronze earns 10 points, Silver 20 and Gold 30. This we feel to be an incentive to the girls, and a recognition of the a ward in the school.

REPORT The opening of the new MolJy Mullan Wing with its three new laboratories has provided the school with greater space for science activities.

Although the building is stiJl incomplete the job of the Lab. Assistant has become easier technically. It will always be an interesting and demanding task.

In this our fourth year of operation within the school, we felt the a ward has finally become established in the school. for since 1975, our numbers have gradually increased, and this year we had a record enrolment of fifty-four entrantsbringing our total to about eighty participants.

Throughout the year, Jennifer Weston Mr Summerlee, and I have been busy, giving talks to stimulate the girls into

House Notes This year our decrease in numbers has meant that Storry house as well as Winchester has had to be closed, but the spirit and vivacity of the boarders has not dwindled in proportion to this decrease!

On the contrary 1978 has been a very lively year for all!

For the first time a weekly boarding system has been set up. and 19 girls are involved in this. For a term all these girls were together in Cranmer where they combined to form a very congenial 'extended family' atmosphere. From the visible success of this venture the system will probably continue next year.

Another 'first' this year was in the dining room. In the third term Mr Roberton kindly offered to set up a dieters' table. and about 20 girls participated in this with obvious success! Once again we must thank Mr Roberton and his staff for all their work. for us this year.

In the first term. a Boarders' Council was established. Each form selected two representatives. and two weekly boarder ex-officio members were called on to

join us. The Council was intended to deal with all the boarding matters that crop up in School Council. The councillors have tended to become more like leaders. and their help to Mrs Atkinson has been invaluable.

We have raised money this year for Lent. Telethon the "new-stereo' fund and for charity co1lections. Throughout the year there have been numerous dances and coffee evenings.

This year we have to say goodbye to Miss Mullan. Throughout her years at St. Margaret's College. Miss Mullan has been both headmistress and matron to the boarders. giving up her valuable time to assist in the organization of the hostel life.

Sandra Harper and I would like to thank the matrons-especially Mrs Atkinson and Miss Hunter-Weston. the House Prefects. and all the boarders who have helped make our last year such a pleasant one.

House Captains' Reports Our dramatic effort 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' was well received being placed third. owing mainly to the dogged determination of Sue Smith and the oratorical graces of Deborah Gilkison.

The third term was also eventful. Despite a fair degree of inconsistency we managed second place in the softball.

Mentions have sporadically been collected all year to the credit of the House.

MA TIPO HOUSE

MANUKA HOUSE

Success was the word this year for Matipo! Led by Antonia Allison we convincingly won the 5wimming sports. In the athletic sports we came a close second to Konini, Rosemary Gardiner and Philippa Townshend giving excellent performances.

On the whole Manuka has had a mediocre year, enlivened by several successes. We failed to get underway before the Swimming and Athletic Sports, hence an absence of placings.

At mid-term Wendy Brand, our former Captain, went to the United States.

On House Day in the second term we won the netball and came first equal in the hockey but, alas, our play "Horton hatches an Egg" was not recognised as the stage masterpiece it was. The second term also saw us farewelling our house captain, Antonia Allison, who left for the U.S.A. on an American Field Scholarship.

The House Day is always a major event in the second term and we were all thrilled with our second placing in the netball.

Manuka was unplaced in the hockey, which seems to be one of our traditions.

In spite of this there was plenty of house spirit. The house lunch was very successful with more parents being present than usual and food in abundance.

As for the summer sports, volleyball, tennis and softball, we played well and had a lot of fun, but decided to let other houses take the major positions for once!

After many hours of practice, our House play was performed, being placed third equal with Konini's. The sixth formers worked extremely hard in producing this play.

Our successful and happy year has come about because everyone in the house has played her part.

The volley ball was very exciting. The end result was a first equal with Kowhai, but the tennis and softball were not so successful. This year we have let down the house tradition of winning the chess, but we managed to get the second placing.

RIMU HOUSE

RATA HOUSE

1978 has been a reasonably good year for Rata House. Spirit is improving each year and all girls have had much enjoyment performing for the House in many events.

In Rimu we may not shine out as intellectuals of this world or women of the sports field, but we have got a good little team and that's the way I would like it to stay. I think the word for it is "potential."

We were placed third overall in the swimming sports. Jill Clarke outswam her opponents on her way to being Senior Champion again this year.

Wendy and Joanna Burrows and Ange]a Davidson should be mentioned for their individual attainments in sport. I might mention that our Rimu play did miss a beat somewhere along the line, but it was not through lack of trying. We all bad a lot of fun producing it. As far as the sporting life goes, Rimu achieved a remarkable place in the swimming. Let us not mention her miserable results in the athletics! Thank you al~ very much for being such a great house to lead.

Rata was fourth this year in the athletic sports and did extremely well by thundering down the Q.E. II track to win the Whole House Relay.

In the second term Rata lost to a strong Matipo team after beating Rimu in the House hockey. House Netball was a tremendous amount of fun, and we came second. The matches were followed by the House lunch to which parents and staff were invited. The House plays, in which Rata jumped from last to first, were the highlight of the year. All those who were involved in the amusing takeoff of 'Opportunity Knocks' worked extremely hard.

RHYTHMICAL GYMNASTICS

Tennis got off to a good start this year with St. Margaret's winning the Quadrangular Tournament which was hosted

by Rangi-Ruru. The members of the team put great effort and determination into their tennis, making this summer tournament a successful one.

The third term arrived and with it the beginning of the inter-school matches.

With the increasing interest of girls wanting to play tennis this year a second! B team was entered into the Wednesday competition.

Again this year the present girls met the 'older' girls in the annual Old Girls' matches. This year the Old Girls deservedly won the cup back by eight matches to four.

In the Wednesday competition the 'A' team won against every school except Christchurch Girls' High.

I would like to thank Miss Morgan for the time she gave up to coach us d-uring the season. also Miss Mackintosh and Miss Miller for taking after-school practices of teams.

This year expense prevented us from competing at both national and local level. However a special novice grade was introduced and J. Gray, S. Hope, R. James and N. Roxburgh performed creditably.

R James was placed first overall.

The red leotard dominated the floor at the secondary schools' championships with the junior team being placed first. and the intermediate and senior team second.

LIFESAVING

TRAMPING

Once again the enthusiasm for lifesaving was strong and many girls succeeded in gaining awards. This led to the school being awarded the Peterson Cup and the Sir Henry Wigram Cup for the most passes. The passes included fifteen instructors, nineteen distinctions, and two diplomas.

Mrs Webster's coaching and effort were much appreciated.

An outing to Broken River marked the beginning of the Tramping year, and we were very lucky to strike a beautiful day.

In the morning we walked through the eave, and when we had dried out, tried our luck on the St. Andrew's adventure course. We then walked to the river where we spent the rest of the day swimming.

Bearing in mind the instruction tramps planned for later on in the term. we decided to organise a film evening. Mr Harris from the Mountain Safety Council agreed to come along and show us some films on Exposure and Bushcraft, which we found most interesting.

and we hope the enthusiasm shown this year by a few will be shared by the whole group in years to come.

methods of river-crossing. We had a few tramps up Sudden Valley and Woolshed Hill, and generaJly got to know the area.

In the second term, we managed to have only one tramp, a day-tramp to . Mt. Thomas, which was a lot of fun. We were joined on this by several parents and friends.

The third term proved to be even more difficult as for finding suitable weekends went. Another day tramp to the Mt. Thomas area was planned, but this had to be cancelled because of bad weather.

However we plan to have an end of year tramp in the first weekend of December.

We hope to form two groups, one which will be based at the hut and make various daytramps from there, and another which will go up the East Rawdon, over the Savannah Range, camp the night out, and return to the hut the following day.

The committee would like to extend their thanks to all who have helped with the Tramping Club this year-parents who have assisted with transport at various stages, the Mountain Safety Council and-staff who have accompanied us on our tramps.

We would especially like to thank Miss Begg for her support and enthusiasm.

SUE WILKINSON VOLLEYBALL

Our season began very early and we were able to organise matches in the first term with Christ's College and St. Andrew's College. These were played once a week and although an overall winning team was not established the games were very enjoyable.

The third term marked the beginning of the more serious matches and due to the large number of keen players, we were again able to enter three teams into the Wednesday competitions. However, the grading systems put all three teams into the 'B' grade. The 'A' and C teams into Division I and the 'B' into Division II. Although the 'A' played extremely well, losing only one game, the grade proved a little too high for the 'C's.

The staff v 'A' was once again an exciting match and although the staff won (very narrowly), the game was possibly a highlight of the season.

I would like to extend special thanks to Mrs Andre and Dr Mann for their valuable coaching and encouragement, which was appreciated by all teams.

I feel that the standard of Volleyball has improved over the last few years because of the enthusiasm of the players and their coaches, and I hope the sport may continue to grow in popularity.

TABLE TENNIS

Now we move into the highly competitive world of table tennis. A truly exhilarating and demanding sport both physically and mentally, psychologically and philosophically.

The A team once more remained undefeated, but not the B team! In fact the latter found competition was rather more tough in their section than they had anticipated. But this did not dampen their spirits; they just did not turn up for practices!

My deputy, Jennifer Weston, and I, would like to thank Mr Twidle for his support and encouragement throughout the season. The practices were most beneficial to those few who turned up. I would like to thank everyone who participated

"It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game."

Therefore the two Badminton teams played for enjoyment. Unfortunately this did not bring success. In fact by the end of the season we had only won two games and those were by default!

gave up to ensure the efficient running of the sports.

But despite the defeats encountered by the teams, Badminton gained interest especially among the younger players who came in large enough numbers to warrant two lunch hours of coaching a week.

And for coaching these players I would like to thank Janet Brimicombe (vicecaptain) who gave up much of her time.

On Monday nights both teams had a practice in the hall and were lucky enough to have the benefit of coaching from Rosemary Kerr.

Colours this year were reawarded to Janet Brimicombe and pockets were awarded to Lindsay Webb and Deborah Thomas.

ROSEMARY BURN (Captain).

SOFfBALL Softball has again this year seen an increase of talent and demand. Fortunately we were able to enter a second team in the C grade. This meant more girls were getting a regular game. In the Wednesday competition the A team lost only to Burnside. and that only by one run, and the C. team also lost only one game. All teams have played hard and well, as reflected by these results-one would hope a fitting tribute to Miss Mangos, Miss Mackintosh, Mr Twidle and Mrs Adams who have helped and coached the teams this year.

ATHLETICS

The athletic sports were held on a hot sunny day, Monday March sixth and with the determined effort of the staff, marshalls and helpers ran to time. It was tremendous to see so many people involved and so much achieved by the participants.

The day was fairly conducive to records with three new records set and one equalled.

With the talent shown at the school sports it was impossible not to select a large team of twenty five to compete successfully at the Christchurch Interschools competition. I must here mention the fine job or organising and running the sports made by the combined team of Christs College and St. Margaret's.

The South Island Secondary Schools' fixture was held in Invercargill. which was too far to travel. but it was fortunate we did not go. as the whole event nearly floated away in the rain!

Miss Macintosh has continued winter gym fitness on a Monday morning, giving everyone the chance to enioy themselves and preserve some vitality for the sport.

Again this year a team will compete in the New Zealand Secondary School's Chamoionshio held at We1Iington in December. I would like to thank the Physical Education Department for the time they

SWIMMING

As usual the first term was extremely busy, with the swimming and athletic sports being held so close together. The sports were held on 23rd. February on a moderately warm day and they proved to be a tremendous success. Not so much in the overall standard of swimming but in the efficiency and feeling of participation that everyone had including spectators. With the added attraction of the new changing sheds we all felt pleased with the day.

The girl of the day proved to be Jill Clarke who broke two records and equalled a third. The house crocodile was great fun-there we had a great battle for the winning house but Kowhai just sneaked ahead at the last moment. Matipo won the sports with Konini and Rata following close behind in points.

The Quadrangular Tournament was held at Rangi Ruru where we came a very close second to the hosting school. Many thanks go to Mrs Clarke for her hard work with the squad.

I would like to say a special thankyou to Miss Mackintosh for all her help and especially the time, knowledge and fun she gave to the gym club. I would like to wish her and the gym club all the best for next year and every success in the competitions.

The Interschools were held on 9th March and we had only three placings. As with other sports, swimming has become so professional that only schools with pupils training professionally do well in interschool sports. We have two girls who are coached and both did well to gain placings in South Island Interschool Swimming.

I would like to thank Miss Mangos and Miss Mackintosh for the tremendous amount of work they put into the sports. making it run so smoothly, the staff who all helped, and the many girls who helped in the heats. I would also like to thank Helen Duckworth for her assistance and all the instructors who gave coaching to many girls, improving their swimming.

NETBALL The weather this year treated the Wednesday netballers more favourably than the year before, with only two rounds cancelled. All teams played with enthusiasm but none quite made the finals.

Both the 'A' and 'B' teams each lost only one game.

Thanks to the reserves who were prepared to fill in at any position. For all those girls who missed selection for teams.

I hope that you will try again next year.

GYMNASTICS

This year the gym club has met as usual on Tuesday night. Miss Mackintosh's instruction gave opportunity for all the girls to have the benefit of someone with world-wide experience and ~ great knowledge of gym. I would also like to mention and thank Jon Scott who has also given up a lot of his time to come and help coach and catch the girls.

The first half of the year was concentrated on practice for the Secondary School Competition, which was the only chance for the girls to show their competitive ability. We entered three teams in Grade six. These teams were placed second, fourth and fifth. I would like to congratulate Hayley Sullivan who was placed third overall and the team which entered in Grade Five.

Once more this year we carried on with the gym groups which proved to be very successful.

On 12th October, the gym club took part in a display for the parents. We performed a warm up routine to music from "The Sting" and this proved to be very entertaining and also very enjoyable for the girls. Some girls also performed individual exercises and these were followed by mini-trampoline vaulting.

CRANMER NETBALL The great enthusiasm by girls wanting to play Cranmer Netball this year led to a fourth team being entered into the Saturday competition. It was a pleasing year for Cranmer Netball with all teams playing extremely well. The 'B' team won their section and recorded the semi-final in the third grade competition being beaten by Casebrook, the eventual winners.

27-21. The 'A' team, after two early round losses managed to win all their other games.

This year Kim Regan, Nicola Power and Joanna Burrows were trialists for the Canterbury U/17 team. Nicola Robinson was in the U/21 trials and Elizabeth Brown and Joanna Burrows were also trialists for the senior reserve team with Elizabeth selected for this year's Canterbury team.

I would like to thank the Cranmer captains for their hard work.

TOURNAMENT

SQUASH

The tournament this year was held at St. Hilda ·s. It was a successful tournament for St. Margaret's with a dramatic and exciting game against St. Hilda's on the final day, enabling us to gain our tournament win.

Squash was definitely the word this year as both our teams were 'squashed' in the inter-school competition! Well, not quite, each team did win a few games, and played gallantly in the rest.

Squash is now played in rain, hail or snow, so we success-fully completed eleven rounds of competition, gaining a Jot of enjoyment and experience from it.

At half term, a drastic reshuffling amongst our teams was required as one of our star players, Wendy Brand, favoured going overseas instead of our company.

My deputy, Helen Duckworth, and I would like to thank Mr Koopman for his wi11ingness to advise and encourage us. and all the girls who played so well.

RESULTS v Craighead, won 32-10. v Columba, won 30-10. v St. Hilda's, won 23-22.

SOUTH ISLAND SECONDARY SCHOOLS' TOURNAMENT

The tournament this year was held in Dunedin in perfect weather conditions.

After a close game against Bayfield on Wednesday, drawing it 15-15, we still managed to win our section. On the Friday morning we met Christchurch Girls' High School in the quarter-finals. The whole team played with determination to win the match, this perhaps being our best game of the season. We then met Villa Maria the eventual winner, in the semi-final but were no match for them.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the tournament making all our fund-raising very worthwhile. l would like to thank Miss Mangos for the encouragement she gave the team, and a]so the parents who supported us.

The members of the Sports Council this year were Rosemary Beckett, Rosemary Burn, Rosemary Gardiner, Nicola Robinson, Antonia Allison, Jill Clarke, Julie Newton, Mary Gibson, Josephine Little and Patrica Dallison.

Because St. Margaret's did not host any tournaments this year, the Sports Council did not have any major events to organize; but thanks to the continued support and help of Miss Mangos and Miss Mackintosh we were able to carry out the task of awarding colours and pockets without any trouble.

Two major issues discussed this year were: what is to replace red colour sashes now that we have a new summer uniform and secondly the question of fund raising to pay for those who travel with school sports teams.

A READING FOR TODAY From th'<!Book of Confrontations: Ohap One.

Now Helena was a fervent disciple of the minor prophet HEINE-MANN and hearkened unto the sayings of no other prophet. And, behold, the sanctuary was filled, as far as the eye could see, with the writings of HEINEMANN and the scrolls of Donaldus were cast unto the dust-yea even the holy table of WHIT-COULL was profaned with Helena's scrolls.

I. Now there was in that city a temple of

EDUK which was dedicated to the holy woman MAR-GARETTA and great were the sacrifices offered therein unto EDUK, for the people of that temple were not as those of other temples, who, while professing to serve EDUK, yet did seek to fill their coffers with gold.

2. And it came to pass that a certain disciple of the ancient prophet, WHITCOULL, by name Donaldus, did enter into the temple of MAR-GARETTA and, prostrating himself before the priestess Naomi, besought her that he might make known to her people the writings of WHIT-COULL and, indeed, of all the other prophets, whereof he had been vouchsafed many revelations.

6. 'O Helena,' cried Donaldus, 'how comest thou in here? Is it that I have been double-crossed?'

Nay, Donaldus, rather double-booked,' said Helena-'forsooth, in thy innocence, thou didst importune Naomi, whereas I, Helena, in my wisdom, I made my obeisance to Moli, the HighPriestess for much greater is her power among the people of MARGARETT A. Therefore it behoveth thee, Donaldus, that thou shouldst fold thy scrolls and steal silently away,' and Donaldus, being aware of the potency of Sisterpower (for he was afflicted with a wife and four daughters) did take his departure sorrowing.

3. Quoth Naomi: 'Yea, verily, come thou to this place three days hence, and thou mayest witness to the revelations whereof thou hast received. And Donaldus went his way rejoicing.

4. Three days after Donaldus came to the temple of MAR-GARETTA early in the morning and set up, in the sanctuary, a table bearing the sacred logo of WHIT-COULL and did place thereon the scrolls of the prophets of EDUK. And seeing that all was done as was ordained, Donaldus withdrew from the temple.

7. But Donaldus said to himself: yet have I faith in Naomi and I will again beseech her that I may witness to her people of the writings of all the prophets. And so he did.

8. And, behold, Naomi waxed exceeding bountiful and did bid Donaldus that he should bring his scrolls even into the inner Sanctuary wherein! are admitted none but the elect in the service of EDUK. And great was the rejoicing in that temple and the people thereof grew in the knowledge and wisdom of EDUK.

5. At about the eleventh hour, the time appointed for the morning libation Donaldus returned to the temple and entered into the Sanctum Stafforum.

Woe to him for there he beheld, gazing at him from ~ great height, the benign countenance of one Helena.

take their job more seriously would be more accurate.

Being unaware, at first, of the conservative nature of New Zealanders I am almost certain I have offended people along the way with my boisterous "devilmay-care" attjtude. It was unconscious on my part and I apologize now for it.

Not long after school started I sought out the debate coach, Miss Tebay, and pleaded on bended knee to be allowed to try out for the SMC debating squad.

Needless to say she consented. In the States we debated two-man teams on one subject the entire year. Here it was a wee bit different (to say the least!) We got through our first tournament (which happened to be part of the Quadrangular Tournament at Rangi) with flying colors.

It was a great deal of fun. Debating itself was good fun (with the possible exception of the Christ College debate. Boo! Hiss!)

Of course I retain no hard feelings.

The school work was much harder than T had experienced in the States. You we~ethrown into it and you either sink or swim. I opted for treading water.

The administration was very understanding of the demands made on me by outside activities. The teachers were also understanding, realizing that I had a limited time in N.Z. to be able to see a bit more of N.Z. They allowed me to travel down to Dunedin with the hockey and netball teams for the Quadrangular Tournament at St. Hilda's. I had an awfully good time there.

Overall my year at St. Margaret's has been laced with excitement, tears, joy and perhaps a hint of amazement but !t has a11-to1dbeen a fantastic year.' and if T_had to do it all over again, I would do 1t at St. Margaret's.

l came to St. Margaret's terribly apprehensive. "ls my hair neat? Do I look okay? Am l wearing too much make-up?

Do you think anyone will know I'm American?" Then we got into the gate. "Well sure. you told me they all wore uniforms. but the same kind?" I could see I had a lot to learn.

My "mum" took me straight to the headmistress. My heart clutched! I had never actually seen a headmistress. but I had heard plenty. I took one final breath and into the office we went. There was a woman sitting behind the desk smiling warmly. She extended her hand and said, "Good morning, I'm Miss Mullan the headmistress." but I was not to be fooled, I mean she looked quite normal. If she was the headmistress (and at that point I had my doubts) where was her whip, and her pet pit viper? As the discussion went on I came to a startling realization, "She is the headmistress!" I must admit it was a shock. The first of many I was soon to find out.

After I got over the initial shock of the first week I found that maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all (but can anyone tell me how you study without the boys' constant teasing?)

Dressing for school was no longer a half hour decision of what to wear fo11owed by a half hour decision about accessories. This was replaced by putting on my uniform and tying back my hair. Something which was much easier, and less time consuming.

I found the teaching style and the teachers themselves somewhat different from what I was used to, coming from a large co-eel school in Wisconsin. The teaching style was very matter-of-fact, and to the point. The teachers themselves are also n1atter-of-fact but with a genuine concern about the students. Perhaps to say they

sections and the range of "extra-murals' was very wide, ranging from pottery to French conversati_on. circles and poetry groups, drama, wildlife study and Scripture Union. There were also lessons for the girls wishing to take a seventh subject in Art or Computer Science. We were a school of about eight-hundred girls and we had 8 houses.

Although, I did find differences, I was surprised how similar our education systems reaJly are and so I didn't have to adapt too much. This is probably just as well, because at the same time I was also adapting to three new homes and families and of course, a different country and way of life. Let me assure you that at first, calling strangers "Mum and Dad" was about as easy as calling my real Mom,_Mrs Kruyshaar. Strangely, now I've been m New Zealand for eight months, I couldn't think of my host parents as anything but my Mum and Dad. Except during the most depressing wet and. cold weather. I thoroughly enjoyed cyclmg to school, also a new experience.

It gave me time for some privacy and contemplation and exercise and it also made me late for school on a number of occasions! All in all I will think back on ~y year at St. Margaret's as a happy, excited and contented one and I will always be ~ratefu1 to the staff and the girls and Miss Mul1an for their understanding and help. I realise that) on occasions it was more difficult for a teacher to· have an exchange student in the class than it was to be an exchange student!

Thank you St. Margaret's for a wonderful year!

MY YEAR AT ST. MARGARET'S COLLEGE

Last year, I thought, was my last school y_ear, a~ after completing my matriculat10n I mtended going on to university.

However, l also wanted to enter a new sphere of life somewhere to learn independance. Rotary Exchange seemed an ideal system and although I had my do~b!s and fears, I shall never regret my dec1s10n because all my dreams have come true. The one rule of Rotary Exchange is that the student must attend High School and this I agreed to because I sa~ the benefit of meeting people and Jearnmg about New Zealand. Having been at a rather strict, staid and rigid but also a very understanding and excellent all-girls school in Pretoria, I admit that I was horrified at the prospect of a year at another all-girl school. However, when I arrived at St. Margaret's College, feeling very apprehensive and nervous, I was glad of the feminine atmosphere I was used to.

My immediate reaction was to compare St. Margaret's to my South African School. In my last year at Pretoria Girls' High School I was in a class of thirtytwo, so, suddenly, finding myself as one of seven in many classes at St. Margaret's. I felt much more self conscious and restricted in class participation. I was not used to special services, end-of-term services and Communion at Easter but I enjoyed these tremendously.

One difference that I simpJy could not get used to was the change in school hours. In South Africa, I started school at 7.45 a.m. and after seven 45 minute periods and two short breaks, we were out of school by 1.25 p.m. The afternoon was reserved for sport and school clubs and was divided into three 45 minute

"What do you want?" the boy managed to stammer.

"Oh nothing much, just this old tree.

It's got a rotten heart, see, and its got to come down or it could hurt someone."

The boy didn't want to hear anymore and ran off into the bush. All the times he had sat with the tree and now he had no place to go. It was the only decent tree in the whole forest, it wasn't fair. Suddenly he rushed off to where his seedling was patiently waiting for its water. He stood over it. staring down and wondered if in another thousand years, anyone would sit by it as he had done, and if it would have a rotten heart.

With tears streaming down his face he put his right hand around the slender fragile trunk and snapped it, then pulled the lower half out of the ground and flung it off into the bush. Everything was silent again.

Everything was silent. Even the birds that had been busily chirping all morning had ceased their chatter. It was as if the whole bush was waiting for something terrible to happen. The boy stopped walking and listened, to nothing. He gazed around him and watched the fantails diving anxiously in their search for insects. The bellbird, clumsy in comparison with the nimble fantail, jumped about the branches picking at berries and then floated down to a low branch and added her rich contribution to the mixed music of the forest.

The boy was anxious to go and visit an old kauri tree that he loved and had visited almost every day for as long as he could remember. He always went there to sort out his childish problems, heavy though they seemed to him. This morning he had no special reason for coming but he had planted a seedling from the kauri and had some water for it. He had planted the seedling several years before and looked after it with painstaking, almost paternal. tenderness and care.

His old friend the kauri had stood tall and maiestic for over a thousand years.

This fact seemed to give the tree its wisdom and timeless understanding. When he reached the tree he sat down. leaning against the massive trunk. He loved. to feel its bark. hammer-marked and flakmg off in places.

Suddenlv his pensive mood was disturbed by two men who were coming through the undergrowth towards him. They were wearing bush shirts and one was carrying a black box.

"Here it is Pete," said one of the intruders. "This is the one." They were both looking at the kauri. The boy stared at them, indignant that they had invaded his privacy.

"Morning son. Move away will you, vou're just where we want to start cutting."

Classroom noises are very familiar like my own hand.

The banging of the desks, the talking, the screaming Sometimes these noises are unbearable, sending my head in a whirl.

I can't think. I can't listen, These noises are driving me insane, STOP! An uncanny silence hits the room, Only breathing, whispering, writing is heard, I can think now and I can listen, But now I want some fun and the classroom noises are turned down.

No desk slamming, no talking, no screaming, no banging, Just utter complete, devastating silence.

ALL GREEN

MY VERSION OF NOAH'S ARK "Noah! Noah! where is that man?" grumbled God. "I've something special to tell him. Ah! There he is at last."

"Oh, hello God is there something you want?"

"Yes I do. Now listen, build an enormous ark lhat can hold two of every animal in the world .•, "Okay."

So Noah set to work, but when he called all the animals he couldn't find mother mouse. At six o'clock on Tuesday night at dinner they found her in the salad.

Noah's wife went to feed the tigers one morning and found a worm missing, and found him inching his way out of a window. Noah's sons Shem, Ham and J apheth went outside and forgot they were on a ship and fell out, but managed to grab the giraffe's neck in time to save themselves.

One bright sunny day Mildred, a dove, was sent to see if there was any land but Mildred had other ideas. "Why me? Can't you send a sparrow, a cuckoo, a fantail?

But of all those birds you chose me. Oh no you won't."

"Oh I just wondered if you wanted to be the first bird to ... " "Oh yes I'll go. You know me, 1'11do anything."

When the dove returned with nothing Noah didn't lose faith in God and sent the dove out again. At last the dove returned with a green twig and Noah lande.d the Ark safely. When they landed God sent up a rainbow to show he would never flood the earth again.

I am a litt]e Green Grasshopper called Ernie. I have five brothers and sisters. As you should know, my world is of three colours: brown for the earth, green for the grass and blue for the sky. I myself call my colour not just light green or dark green, or even olive green (which some of the lower grasshoppers do) but I am a green ca11ed'The Highly Magnifield Boxiglogified Meaglined Green.' I am a proud insect.

All is well in my world. I am very rich. "Not with money my dear fellow," 1 said to my diary-on-tape, "but with earthworms, beetles and other sorts of brainless types." I have very many friends who are also very rich and famous, but they are just green.

As you should have guessed, I have nothing to do with my family except at Christmas time when I give them a couple of our tons of earthworms (seeing they are the cheapest). I do not like the name mum gave me so when guests are around I call myself Adam Soolic. I have had a first class education, but I still have a grasshopper to pay my bills etc.

One day I was on a walk when I heard thunder. I looked up at the sky. It was a clear blue. I heard it again and began to feel frightened. Bugs had told me about it, it was a giant. I tried to run but my legs froze and my teeth were chattering. The noise stopped. A great big round thing came towards me. Tt had two big blue things and an enormous mouth.

Then a hand came towards me. I was still shivering but then it µut me down and it laughed and said. "Come and visit me sometime."

Then I realized that there were more colours than green, blue and brown. There was red, black, purple, pink, white, orange and yellow. And there was more to life than buzs, e:uthworms and enemies there was life outside our world, mature life which could take over our world, so there was fear.

THE FOG AND I

T~en the night stock popping off to sleep said slowly with a sigh, "You know that I'm the nicest flower with a lovely yellow eye."

. I don't hate fog. I find it quite soothmg. Those who torment it, spreading cruel propaganda about being choked to death, cruelly murdered by harmless fog, deserve it all.

Each winter morning as I plod off to school the fog comes down the mountain to greet me and we walk to school together. I applaud as it oozes and oils around the tops of the trees. performing a fresh, original ballet each morning.

Its cold fingers take my hand and urge me on, playing on the palm of my hand the ancient chants of its mountain home.

We swing and sway together to the music, and watch diamonds slip from the leaves of the trees and disappear in the grass below.

Sometimes I talk to the fog, trying to express myself in a beautiful language.

The fog strokes my hair in a maternal way and whispers back in a strange language that I can never understand. I wish he would not keep secrets from me. I share my whole life with him, but there is never a response.

As we near the turn in my mountain road I see the fog getting agitated.

I know that now is the time to bid farewell as my friend sails out across the lake, cowering a little beneath the frown of the sun, only to return again, tomorrow, on my mountain road, where I will be waiting ...

"Why Babs, darling, I was just waiting for you, Shall we go?" he repJied, with affected casualness which hid his guarded glance at her lanky legs. Linking his arm in hers, together they sauntered casually down the alley, past the mewing cats and dirty rubbish tins, and disappeared behind a tall, tenament block full of crying children and long, deserted corridors ...

"John! John! ... Come in here. I've got something to tell!" John threw his leather case onto the floor of the ha11cupboard· and leaving his coat in a forlorn Jump on the chair, went into the kitchen.

As he entered he sniffed. This was a thing he always did, for Babs was an excellent cook, just as she was excellent at everything else, and John could always tel1 whether it be pizza and coke, or roast beef and potatoes, what kind of extra exotic top dressing she bad added. But today there was no delicious odour, wafting out of the oven or from on top of the stove, only Babs stood awkardly, eyeing a cobweb in a sombre corner and somehow, the words slipped out of her mouth.

"I'm pregnant," and John felt a, raging and a joy that he bad never felt before ....

"Get down stairs!"

"Don't answer your mother back!"

"John, don't punish him so hard."

"Babs, he's got to learn."

Tears. pain, lack of communication and suddenly they were growing apart.

It was as if the three of them had been pried apart. No more did they share the joy of family hood. No more did John and Bahs and Tony, their sulky son, live peacefully and comfortably together in each other's company. And thus the death of a family began, not in a physical sense but in a mental sense. John drifted back to his gang and his boyhood ways, Babs to her hairdressing job and social circle and Tonv wafted away to school and friends. Yes. a divorce but not a divorce of a man and wife but of a family.

Idling against a lampost, basebaJl under ~is arm, John was lazily surveying the gnmy sunset of the smal1 suburban town. He was known by his friends as being boisterous, ready for a dare and always good for a laugh. Not that John really cared for his friends' opinion of him for he was supposed to be the "Uninflictable' as Greasy Peanuts and the whole o! the Crazy Beetles Gang referred to him. but now that he was in sixteenth grade, not to mention that Barbara Deans in Rickers Avenue was going steady with him, he decided it was time for a little maturity.

Away with the football games, the sneakers, the dare-devil rides along Old Canyon Road on the back of a moped, away with the stick of pot on the footba11 field at lunchtime-pooh!

That was chicken feed - that was just fifteenth grade.

THE LOST CITY As I walked through the old city, I wondered what was happening years before in the city. In a cottage I imagined people rushing to get meals ready. As I walked through I saw a cot for a baby and old rusty toys. Out behind it I saw a shed also used as a workroom. From a big apple tree hung the remains of a swing and there were also the remains of a tree house. It was very quiet.

The next house looked as if it belonged to a rich person, perhaps the mayor, who could tell? In this house l imagined whoever lived there, ordered people around.

His wife may have been a quiet person and easy to please. I imagined a baby in a room upstairs and twins playing a game of ball and the mother knitting. Out in the yard was a sand-pit, a rusty old rocking horse, a dog's kennel with Emma on the bowl.

Next l saw a church, town hall, old drinking fountains, sheds. stables, parks. hotels, old buildings, books, maps and paintings.

The city was once a gay, cheerful place.

Now there were onlv ba11s of paper and rubbi'-h. Who knows why it was left standing in the gloomy, dark parts of the world. no comfort except for the birds and animals?

THE STORM Once upon a time at St. Margaret's College we heard thunder and lightning outside. It was a rain storm so it didn't knock any trees over. That is how l came to learn about storms and that storms can knock over trees and houses and can knock over people and kill them. Storms can make floods and c1oud bursts. I don't like storms because they might kill you. I know because one day at Grandma's place we had a storm and Timmy just about got killed in the storm. When we Jived in a hotel a storm burst up and nearly knocked over our hotel. l loved that storm.

turn to dust and crumble into the desk, the grains still sifting through the entwining claws that clutch my mind as if a feline devil was swallowing my withering thought. the lesson rolls undisturbed the red cave, flapping open, word, close, open, word words that dribble out and dissolve into the floor.

Finally the claws are stretched the lesson halted and I run to the warm clatter of friendship outside the dry room.

THEIDEA A thundering crash of light permeated the nothingness life, began. The dark was pulled apart like a curtain to reveal the opening of a play, perhaps a satire. And then there was the word. An infant existence crying its first thrashing tears that dribble across the cheek of life.

Colour ..... splashed across the beginning. Slowly growing into a multitude from the parents of black and white.

Time, opening itself like a sore wound cooked with salt. Across the meadows, across the moors of lifting fog, the light, dark, colour and time held hands.

It seemed a great idea at first but when thought over, it appeared like an idle dream between pauses. God yawned again.

TIME Time to come down.

The height of ecstacy took me away Until I met you-a realist, and tumbled over ....

I like to mow lawns, In the springtime.

I brood on the forward and on the backward And listen to the bees.

If I close my eyesat the right moment, I can catch a memory before it falls over the edge.

wasn't shone out rich with nature's colours. Pots were copper, the chairs were life's green, tables and benches, were imposing slabs of sturdy oak and walnut.

Glowing bottles of preserves radiated warmth from the honey in which they bathed and the pale walls winked as the wind buffeted the ivy on the window.

We made bread, seasoned with herbs which she hung in aromatic sprays from the roof beams, and berry jam, tomato soup and rosemary tin.

There were days when she wouldn't cook, and we would make collages and mozaics with shells she had collected. And once she showed me how to spin wool, using a wheel made with an apple and a barbed stick. We knitted a mitten.

She would hum most wonderfully with a sound like teak and a tune from her bees. and her eyes would dance with the dappled light, and shine.

She wasn't old, I'm almost sure, but she died and left me only with a mitten, and a mosaic of cat's-eyes, the memories of a thousand moments, and an old mortar and pestle.

TRACY SHEAT, 4F. HER ROOM, HER HOUSE, HER LIFE Her kitchen was the best of all. Its precious haven lay at the end of thel treasure heaped passage, and to reach it she allowed you to pass along the passage, but she didn't let you dawdle. It was always misty and dark along that stretch of mulberry carpet, but I was never afraid as I trundled along after her. Even before I could see the welcome mat of light from under the door I could smell the room. I could see in my mind the mortar and pestle, its glorious marble texture warming me to the heart.

The door was of heavy wood and always shut tight. I would walk right into the folds of her heavy skirt befor1,;I stopped, and smell her.

It was the only time we could consciously be close. Beyond the door we simply couldn't.

She would walk the door open and let me pass through, and my senses fled to every inch of her room. Almost everything was made of wood and that which

SILENCE Silence plummeted down like a rock into the room, scattering words and exploding into a thousand fragments of ill-feeling.

A huge hole yawned angrily in the conversation, while thoughts echoed emptily out of it.

Yet out of the thick pall of silence rose a new soundthe sound of a single voice absorbing the silence.

Our combined Bridge Luncheon with Rangi-Ruru Old Girls' was a great success this year. We even had to refuse some entries, so please next year make sure your names are in before the closing date. We dislike refusing entry to keen bridge players and loyal Old Girls.

We were able to give the School Endowment Fund $200.00 this year to invest As this is my last newsletter, I wish, to thank most sincerely the Executive and Committee for the loyal support they have given me over the last two years, especially to our calm, unflappable Secretary, Jan Webley, and our treasure of a Treasurer, Ruth Brown who work so hard for the Association. Also I would like to thank Jenny Babington, our 1st Vice President for her competent support and wish her a very successful two years as your new President.

ANNUAL REPORT It is with pleasure that I present to you the Committee's Annual Report and Balance Sheet for the year ending 31st August, 1978. We hope that you feel better informed having received two newsletters during the year.

Jenny Babington and I have had an interesting year representing you on the Board even though the economic exercises of running a Private School are becoming increasingly complex. Also with State Integration rearing its ugly head you can be sure that the Board is studying it very carefully and will only take the step of integrating if it is forced to for financial reasons. We have had some most interesting letters from the Branches and they are still enthusiastic and active.

In the May school holidays we held a "Dine and Disco" for the younger members at the Avon Motor Lodge which was very successful, and we hope to repeat this next year.

Armagh Circle: Two enjoyable functions have been held this year. In October we joined with the Old Girls' Committee in arranging a visit to Mrs Noeline McIlroy's beautiful garden in Hamilton Avenue.

A successful Morning Tea was held in May in the Royal Overseas League rooms in Cashel Street. Joyce Benze's talk on her trip to England was bright and entertaining.

It is with regret that we record the death of Norah Smith (Tobin)-we remember with gratitude her splendid work in the interests of the Old Girls' Association and the School.

Timaru Branch: Following the combined Church Service held in St. Mary's Church. Timaru on St. Margaret's Day with Old Girls from St. Hilda's College. the Timaru Branch held its Annual General Meeting in the Church Hall. There were no new officers to elect, so the meeting was short.

In April a Pot Luck Party was held at the home of Diana Carter-husbands included. Everyone helped by bringing a 'pot' of food.

Oodagh Garty (Willoughby) has left Timaru during the year.

ROSEMARY FITZGERALD, Secretary.

Auckland Branch: In June our members attended a theatre party at the Mercury Theatre for a performance of "Middle-age Spread."

A luncheon was held at the Parnell Rose Gardens in August and it was good to see so many of our older members.

Billy Pidgeon told us about her interesting voluntary work with the! Howick Branch of Red Cross and we were amazed at the extent of her work in the community. Sally Mills gave a brief, humorous account' of her recent travels with a group of 43 schools girls to Europe in the Christmas holidays and the Zonta International Convention in Denver. Colorado in June of this year.

Wellington Branch: The A.G.M. was held in October last year. the Branch celebrating their 40th. Anniversary by holding a special Dinner Meeting at Eastbourne where 40 mem hers met first for drinks. followed by et. delightful meal at the Van Gogh Restaurant. The Christchurch President. Lois Newton (Luney) and Jan Webley were delighted to be with us on this special occasion.

We have had a busy year with functions. The out-of-town meeting at the Otaki home of Zena Bolton (Rose) meant we had an opportunity to meet several members who can not often join us.

We have had three luncheons which have been well attended and we welcomed more new members to the Branch.

Otago-Southland Braooh: Our A.G.M. was held at the home of our resident.

Helen Murchison (Cox). on March 15.

We proposed to double the donation to the Endowment Fund to $20.00 this year.

Ashburton Branch: The Ashburton Branch of the S.M.C.O.G.A. has held three functions over the past year-two luncheons and a morning coffee party, incorporating our A.G.M. Proceeds from a sales table and the odd raffle during the year will enable us to make our annual donation to the School Chapel fund .

A recently renewed list shows that we now have at least seventy nine Old Girls in the Ashburton County. Although most of these are permanently residing in the area., it was decided to hold. a luncheon in the August holidays to enable the twenty or so younger members studying at University or Training College to attend.

ration in very distinguished positions and others of a later vintage whom I did not know, but who introduced themselves sometimes in the middle of the night-"I was at St. Margaret's too."

It has been just the same here, at Cashmere View Hospital, the most delightful and pleasant resting place. I have lost count of the number of actual Old Girls and relations or friends of Old Girls among the Staff and patients-lovely to meet you all.

Then to, special thanks to the visitors most kind and faithful-how I do enjoy seeing you, sharing remembrances of days in the past and accepting all the help and gifts so freely offered,_ particularly the hand knitted bedsocks!

I shall always carry with me an increasingly thankfulness for the privilege of my connection with S.M.C. Much love to you all and many thanks again.
