Our message is simple: Thank You. In a year characterized by a contentious election, economic uncertainty, and a fiscal cliff, you gave and gave generously.

You set a record, donating over $6 million in cash — the largest amount in St. Luke’s history…

‌As we write, the crunch and whine of big machinery hums steadily outside, making the basement level of what will be a three-story Science Wing an exciting reality.

Thanks to a small group of generous Momentum Campaign donors, the facility will open in September 2014 and house a program that literally bursts from its current physical boundaries. Already, the Science Department has built a robust curricular and co-curricular program, focused on a culture of inquiry, experimentation, and hands-on work. Interest in the STEM Diploma has exploded in the last two years, and team-based contests such as the Rube Goldberg Competition in the Upper School and the new Flight Day Competition in the Middle School reflect the burgeoning creative and collaborative ethos in the Sciences‌

…Funded by your gifts, virtual learning environments expand the campus beyond the walls of steel, brick, and glass. In partnership with the Lovett School in Atlanta, GA, St. Luke’s developed a fully online course on the ethics of global citizenship, to be offered in the 2013-2014 school year. We launched a pilot iPad program in the 8th Grade, thanks to funding from the Head of School Discretionary Endowment Fund. Members of the Technology Task Force travelled far and wide to investigate best practices in educational technology; their recommendations will advance the School in this strategic area over the next few years…

…Infusions from the outside community broadened the impact of learning at St. Luke’s.

International Month in April included visits from over 50 students from our partner schools in South Africa, New Zealand, and Argentina, bringing the world to our students through personal interactions with their peers from across the globe. Funded by the Class of 2012 Center for Leadership Speaker Series Fund, the Center for Leadership hosted 11 experts ranging from big data to international humanitarian assistance. These speakers exposed students to a wide spectrum of perspectives and fields.…

…With your support, we have actively pursued partnerships that amplify our public purpose and the “Go Forth to Serve” motto. In addition to relationships with dozens of organizations that we serve through our annual Community Service Days, St. Luke’s has entered into a formal strategic partnership with Inspirica, a Stamford-based organization focused on breaking the cycle of homelessness. Through this partnership, St. Luke’s students and faculty make a meaningful difference for an organization doing heroic work in the lives of our community’s most vulnerable neighbors. In return, we learn, develop deeper understanding and empathy, and enrich the School’s service learning curriculum…

…Donors established endowed funds this year, supporting in perpetuity emerging student leader and middle school faculty awards, the underwriting of expenses related to the college process for deserving students, scholarship support, and student life and school spirit. Our general and restricted endowments total over $21M, increasing by over $2M in the last year. Continued growth in our endowment funds is critical to ensuring the School’s financial sustainability, and we are grateful that you understand how important that is.

The donors below made gifts to Phases II & III of the Momentum Campaign, which includes funding to build the Center for Leadership/Dining Commons, the Science Wing, and special facilities enhancements such as hockey dressing rooms at SONO Ice House and makeup tables and storage for our theater program. General Endowment Fund

Established in 1980 to provide unrestricted support to the School’s operating budget and other needs.

Richard J. Pedrick Endowed Memorial Fund

Endowment

Established in 1995 in memory of Dick Pedrick, parent of four SLS students and dedicated board chair from 1989 until his death in 1995, “to perpetuate, as a living memory, all that Dick Pedrick stood for.” The Richard J. Pedrick award is granted annually to a graduating senior who exemplifies leadership, dedication, intelligence, athletic participation, good sportsmanship, and love for his/her fellow human beings.

2012-2013 Awardee: James Hamill ’13 E.E. Ford Foundation Fund for Minority Scholarships

Established in 1997 to provide needbased scholarships for minority students, grades 9-12.

China Care Endowed Chair for Chinese Language Education

McIntire Family College Opportunity Fund

Established in 2006 to fund a Chinese language instructor who will also be the coordinator of the St. Luke’s School China Care Club, a student organization that helps further the mission of China Care.

Established in 2012 to provide funding for college-related expenses that face juniors and seniors on financial aid, so that they may discover and improve their chances of attending colleges that will provide rewarding individual college experiences. Made in memory of Gavin McIntire ’08.

Unrestricted Board Endowment Fund

Established in 2007 as a quasi-endowment fund to provide unrestricted support to the School’s operating budget while allowing for flexibility in the future.

George E. Stevens Horizons Prize Endowment

Established in 2010 to provide full scholarship support for a Horizons student each year for up to four years of high school. The intent of the prize is to inspire Horizons students to aspire to excellence at St. Luke’s School. It will recognize students who love learning, demonstrate good character, pursue excellence, and embrace community.

Endowment for Faculty

Established in 2002 to provide support to faculty and faculty-related initiatives such as professional development.

Includes the Dr. Joseph R. Kidd Excellence in Teaching Award. 2012-

Established in 2003 to provide need-based scholarships for deserving students.

Named in honor of Headmaster Emeritus Dick Whitcomb who retired in 2002.

Head of School Discretionary Endowment Fund

Established in 2005 to fund projects determined by the Head of School.

Karen E. Wiegman ’92 Award Endowed Fund

Established in 2005 to provide an annual award to a senior who has shown the most growth over their years at St. Luke’s School. This growth is marked by social connections, academic discovery, and personal maturation. 2012-2013

Goldstone Faculty Enrichment Endowed Fund

Established in 2011 to provide grants to teachers and administrators to pursue personally rewarding experiences, be it travel, summer study, or the opportunity to pursue a passion. The intent of the Fund is to recognize and reward faculty members and administrators for excellence in service to the School and its students, as well as to emphasize in a visible and enduring manner the importance of the faculty to the health and vitality of the School. 2012-2013

Class of 2012 Center for Leadership Speaker Series Endowed Fund

Established in 2012 as a legacy gift from the Class of 2012 to help underwrite the Center for Leadership’s speaker series program and support the Center for Leadership’s mission to develop every SLS student’s unique ability to lead and make a difference.

S. Philip Klein Emerging Leader Award Endowed Fund

Established in 2012 to recognize St. Luke’s students who are of good character and possess strong leadership potential. On an annual basis, an awardee will be presented with the opportunity to attend an Outward Bound program between the 9th and 10th grades. The intent is that award recipients will challenge themselves, further personal growth and understanding, and learn leadership skills at an Outward Bound program that will benefit themselves, the St. Luke’s School community, and ultimately the larger world. The award aligns with the Center for Leadership’s mission to find one’s voice and make a difference.

2012-2013 Awardee: Hank Ferris ’16 Class of 2013 Student Life Endowed Fund

Established as a legacy gift from the Class of 2013 to support activities related to student life and the promotion of school community and school spirit.

Duncan Edwards Waterside School Scholarship Fund

Established in 2013 to provide scholarship awards to outstanding students coming from the Waterside School in Stamford, CT. Edward Scovner Excellence in Middle School Teaching Award Fund

Established in 2013 by the Royce Family to support an award to a middle school teacher who has most inspired student to fulfill their individual potentials through her/his commitment, deep affection for students, and most importantly, distinctive style and approach to teaching.

Center for Leadership Established in 2010, the Center for Leadership is a hothouse for innovation. Under the umbrella of its motto, “Find your voice. Make a difference.”, donors have recently established two new funds to seed its work and foster the development of strong leadership skills in St. Luke’s students.

S. Philip Klein Emerging Leader Award Created to annually recognize ninth grade students with strong character and leadership potential, the S. Philip Klein Emerging Leader Award promotes the development of leadership qualities in our youngest Upper School students. To be considered, applicants undergo a competitive screening process, which includes personal interviews and a written application. Hank Ferris ’16 received the inaugural award and attended the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School program this summer. St. Luke’s thanks Bradford and Bonnie Klein for providing this opportunity for our students.

Class of 2012 Center for Leadership Speaker Series Fund A gift from the families of the graduating class of 2012, this endowed speaker series has had a profound impact on the St. Luke’s community. During 2012-2013, the Center for Leadership hosted more than ten distinguished speakers as part of the Lunch and Lead series, Visual Arts Week and school-wide assemblies, exposing students to a wide range of perspectives and fields. Speakers also visited classrooms and clubs, giving SLS students greater opportunities to interact with and learn from these accomplished visitors.

Goldstone Faculty Enrichment Fund Supports Two Dream Grants in 2012-2013 The Faculty Enrichment Fund supports annual awards to faculty that enable them to pursue personally rewarding experiences, such as travel, summer study, or the pursuit of a life-long passion. In 2012-2013, two faculty members received “Dream Grants,” as the St. Luke’s faculty members affectionately call them. Colin "Bucky" Buchanan, veteran Math teacher and coach, achieved his dream to take his wife on their first vacation in twenty years.

Kate Parker-Burgard, Director of Character Education and avid proponent of sustainable living, used her award to expand her vegetable garden and to research and purchase the necessary materials to undertake beekeeping in her backyard.

A special program through which senior families make legacy gifts in honor of their child’s graduating class, the Senior Gift makes an indelible mark on the School each year by visibly funding strategic initiatives. In the past few years, the Senior Gift has helped fund substantial facilities improvements, such as the Center for Leadership and Dining Commons (Class of 2011), and most recently, student life and the promotion of school spirit (Class of 2013).

Head of School Discretionary Endowment Fund Drives Advances in Educational Technology in 2012-2013 Each year, the Head of School selects special strategic projects to underwrite with income from this endowed fund. In 2012-2013, the School purchased 150 new iPads to continue our ongoing iPad Pilot Program, including iPads for the faculty. This program enables teachers and students to harness dynamic mobile technology, thus improving student learning and productivity. The iPad pilot also drives technological innovations, including blended and online coursework, partnerships with other schools and organizations, faculty development and training in leveraging technology in their classrooms, and appropriately resourced hardware, network, and software platforms.

Parents’ Association

The St. Luke’s Parents’ Association consists of all parents and guardians of students enrolled in St. Luke’s School. Its goal is to engage and involve the entire school community through educational, informational, social and fundraising projects. In 2012-2013, donations to the P.A. helped provide funding for professional development, non-tuition essentials for students on financial aid, and the purchase of two school buses.
