A place to grow All children need a place where they can be safe and healthy and loved. In 2016, St. Luke’s Foundation launched “A Place for Me” to build healthier tomorrows for kids and families throughout Eastern Iowa. Through this fundraising initiative, children whose lives have been touched

by UnityPoint Health St. Luke’s shared their stories in their own words. And thanks to the generosity of people like you, we have raised more than $650,000 to support the amazing Children’s Services at St. Luke’s.

We are also grateful for the many other gifts we received last year from

our friends, partners, physicians and UnityPoint Health associates. Friends like Helen G. Nassif, whose generous support of St. Luke’s over the years has greatly enhanced women’s and children’s health, heart care and cancer services. And friends like local farmer Roger Krug, who honored his late wife’s legacy of kindness with his sponsorship of a Healing Power of Art image—a beautiful and lasting gift for the benefit of patients and their loved ones.

To be sure, these are challenging times for healthcare. St. Luke’s Hospital needs our financial support more than ever before. But together we can help St. Luke’s continue to provide exceptional, compassionate care to the people of Eastern Iowa.

Helen G. Nassif left Cedar Rapids more than six decades ago to

pursue a successful career as an attorney, real estate investor and philanthropist. But a piece of her heart has always remained in the town where she grew up. Over the years, Ms. Nassif’s generous support of health care in our community has totaled almost $6 million to St. Luke’s Foundation on behalf of heart care, women’s and children’s health and cancer services.

In 2016, Ms. Nassif made an additional gift of $250,000 towards the Helen G. Nassif Community Cancer Center, fulfilling a $1 million pledge she began five years earlier.

“I am extremely proud of the Community Cancer Center’s role in helping cancer patients and their loved ones,” says Ms. Nassif. “It’s very gratifying to know so many lives have been touched by the services they provide.” Ms. Nassif’s past contributions to cancer care include $500,000 to establish the Albert G. and Helen Nassif Radiation Center at St. Luke’s, named in honor of her late brother.

Dean Baughman likes to keep active. Even in his mid-eighties, New TAVR procedure offers minimally invasive alternative to open heart surgery

the Marion man was a regular at the gym. But a bad heart valve left him short of breath and unable to do the activities he enjoyed. It also put him at risk for sudden cardiac death.

Baughman had severe aortic stenosis—a common heart problem in older adults in which a narrowing of the aortic valve restricts blood flow throughout the body. “The standard treatment is open-heart surgery, where we take the old valve out and put a new one in,” explains Dr. Wassef Karrowni, St. Luke’s Heart & Vascular Institute.

“But some patients are too sick for major surgery. Today the first choice in treatment for these patients is TAVR.” TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, is a less invasive option for individuals considered high- or medium-risk for open-heart surgery. During TAVR, the replacement valve is inserted via a catheter through an artery in the leg, similar to inserting a stent. Until recently, TAVR was only available in Iowa in Des Moines and Iowa City.

Now St. Luke’s Heart & Vascular Institute has brought this advanced procedure to Eastern Iowa, with support from St. Luke’s Foundation. “Facilities have to meet special requirements to perform TAVR,” says Dr. Karrowni. “We have a qualified multidisciplinary team trained in the procedure and we perform the required minimum number of cardiac catheterizations and open-heart surgeries. What we lacked was a hybrid procedure room specially equipped for TAVR. That’s where the Foundation stepped up.”

St. Luke’s Foundation contributed $225,000 to create the facility and purchase necessary equipment. “The dollars came from the Vaughn and Bernice Hartzell Endowment Fund,” explains Foundation President Mary Klinger. “The Hartzells were loyal donors and friends of St. Luke’s Hospital. They created this endowment in 2006 to benefit heart and stroke care.”

St. Luke’s TAVR team is the only one in Eastern Iowa performing this life-saving procedure led

The first TAVR procedures at St. Luke’s were performed in October 2016. Dean Baughman was one of those patients. “I had no concerns about the newness of the procedure,” he says. “I thought it was great they offered the procedure right here in Cedar Rapids and I had great care at St. Luke’s.” Today Baughman is back at the gym three days a week, adding, “It feels great to be able to do it again.”

The team at St. Luke’s is performing a growing number of TAVR procedures as more high- and medium-risk patients choose this option. Clinical trials at research centers around the country are evaluating whether low-risk patients might also benefit from TAVR. “If tests prove results are as good for those patients as traditional open-heart, TAVR will become an option for everyone,” notes Dr. Karrowni.

Meanwhile, he says today’s TAVR patients can see the difference in their health right away. “There’s a shorter recovery time than with open-heart surgery, so patients are usually up and walking the same day and go home in two to three days.” Dr. Karrowni adds, “This is a life-saving procedure. Our goal is to prolong life, but also to help you feel better so you can enjoy life, too.”

Mary Krug was many things in her life—a secretary, farmer, active

member of her church, and above all, a dedicated wife and mother. She was also a good friend to her neighbors in the community of Atkins, just west of Cedar Rapids.

“Mary was a good type of person,” remembers Roger Krug, her husband of 51 years.

“She would bend over backwards to help others.”

Now Mary’s legacy is helping people courtesy of Roger’s donation to St. Luke’s Foundation through the Guardian Angel program. This program, which helps families recognize those who have made their journey easier, funds programs and equipment that add to the quality of care at UnityPoint Health - Cedar Rapids.

Mary Krug spent two weeks in St. Luke’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) before transferring to the Inpatient Hospice Unit, where she passed away on January 28, 2016. It was a difficult time, but throughout, Mary and her family were surrounded by a compassionate and caring team.

“Everyone at St. Luke’s gave Mary extremely good care,” says Roger Krug. “My son and daughter and I can’t say enough about how well they treated her. They made Mary’s last weeks very pleasant in spite of the situation.”

Nearly 60 people provided care for Mary during her stay. “I cannot believe there could be so many people who were all so kind!” says Roger.

In the weeks that followed, Roger continued to think about the exceptional care his wife had received and he knew what Mary would have wanted him to do. “I had to help other people the best I could. My children agreed and said ‘Dad, that’s the thing to do.”

Roger reached out to Jennifer Sweeney, Annual Giving Director at St. Luke’s Foundation. He told Jennifer he wanted to do something special to recognize and thank Mary’s caregivers from the ICU, Respiratory Care and Hospice. On June 3, 2016, Roger Krug presented Guardian Angel pins to the doctors, nurses, therapists and techs who made a difference for his wife and family.

“Many of the people who took care of Mary were at the ceremony,” recalls Roger.

“I was so glad to see them again. I shook everyone’s hand and gave them their pins.

And I got to talk to the nurses and other caregivers who were so good to her.”

Since then, Roger has made an additional donation to St. Luke’s Foundation, becoming one of the first to sponsor a photo in The Healing Power of Art project.

“Mary and I never talked about doing something like this, but I know she’d be glad to know we’re helping others,” adds Roger.

“We wanted Dad’s gift to go toward rural health care programs because Dad was from Lamont and maintained strong ties with friends and family from Buchanan, Delaware and Linn counties,” explained Terry’s son Roger M. Smith. “As his children, we want to ensure delivery of health care and transportation of patients to and from these areas.”

The Rural Health Care Grant Program provides matching funds toward projects that improve the health and wellness of rural residents. St. Luke’s LifeGuard Ambulance services Cedar Rapids and surrounding communities with around-the-clock emergency and critical care transportation. The dollars generated by the Terry L. Smith Family Endowment will support these programs with ongoing maintenance, staff education and training, and specialized equipment and facility needs.

Partners in children’s health Variety – the Children’s Charity teams up with St. Luke’s to help kids in our community

Meet Victoria,

the newest member of the St. Luke’s Center for Women’s and Children’s Health team.

Victoria, whose full name is VICTORIA® S2200, is an amazingly lifelike maternal patient simulator who helps St. Luke’s team members prepare for emergency situations involving moms and babies during delivery. Both Victoria and the new Variety – the Children’s Charity Education and Simulation Center in the Helen G. Nassif Center for Women’s and Children’s Health are the result of generous support from Variety – the Children’s Charity of Iowa.

“We are so fortunate as a community hospital to have this advanced equipment and a dedicated space for education and training,” explains Diane Seelau, director of St. Luke’s Women’s and Children’s Services. “The more practice our team can get on a simulator, the better we are in real-life situations.”

Three out of four babies born in Linn County are delivered at St. Luke’s.

While most births are routine, medical emergencies can occur at any time, from a breech delivery to life-threatening hemorrhaging by the mother. That’s why Seelau says training on the simulator is essential. “It gives us a safe, controlled situation where our team learns how to handle these crises. It doesn’t matter if you’re a nurse or a tech, a new hire or an experienced member of the team.

Everyone in obstetrics and neonatal care goes through these simulations because we need every role to be prepared.”

Variety provided the funding for the simulator and renovation of the dedicated education space through grants totaling more than $188,000 over the last two years. “Our purpose has always been to focus on children in need,” says JJ Trotta, Eastern Iowa director for Variety – the Children’s Charity. “In this case, we’re truly helping the smallest of the small.”

Variety has partnered with St. Luke’s for many years, granting more than $1 million towards children’s services.

It’s a relationship that works both ways, adds Sheri McMichael, executive director of Variety – the Children’s Charity of Iowa. She says, “We are committed to making Cedar Rapids and Iowa the best possible place to raise kids. Going hand in hand with that is supporting organizations like St. Luke’s that provide important services to children. In return, St. Luke’s team members support Variety through their employee giving campaign.

In fact, over the years they have contributed almost $600,000 to Variety to help children in this community.”

McMichael stresses that every dollar raised in Cedar Rapids stays in Cedar Rapids. In addition to grants for equipment and facilities, Variety also helps families through the Compassion Fund. This money, raised during Variety’s Two Days of Compassion radio campaign, provides support for families who have a baby or child in the hospital for an extended time. St. Luke’s social workers use the fund to help families with immediate needs, from food to transportation. “The Compassion Fund helps people through a difficult time,” says McMichael. “Families who have benefited from it in the past often come full circle and give back to Variety because they remember how much that money meant to them in their time of need.”

Adds St. Luke’s Diane Seelau, “Variety is a great partner for us. They’ve donated to children’s services throughout the hospital, benefiting kids in our community significantly. This latest gift is another important step forward in patient care. By enhancing our ability to train for emergencies, Victoria and the Education and Simulation Center will help St. Luke’s save lives.”

Giving back to the communities they serve GRANTS

CIPCO helps communities through its support of Rural Healthcare Grants

Concern for Community is one of the key principles

guiding the Central Iowa Power Cooperative (CIPCO), says Kathe Breheny, CIPCO Vice President of Corporate Communications. “We have been serving our members throughout Iowa since 1946. We are committed to giving back to the communities we serve.”

In 2016, CIPCO partnered with St. Luke’s Foundation for the first time. “Because we serve mainly rural communities, the opportunity to support St. Luke’s Rural Health Care Grants really appealed to us,” Breheny explains. “We were impressed by how focused St. Luke’s is on improving health care in rural Iowa.”

The Rural Health Care Grant program provides matching funds toward projects that improve the health and wellness of rural residents. Grants have been used to purchase lifesaving equipment, train emergency medical technicians and reimburse the transportation expenses for volunteers. Since 1980, St. Luke’s Foundation has awarded grants totaling more than $330,000 to support emergency medical and transportation services in Benton, Cedar, Delaware, Iowa, Northern Johnson, Jones and Linn counties.

“Many of the communities that receive funding are within our member cooperatives’ service territory,” says Breheny. “The dollars we give will have a direct benefit on the people we serve.”

CIPCO has a limited budget for donations, she adds, so it’s especially important to make sure their dollars are used wisely. Breheny now serves on the Rural Health Care Grant selection committee and appreciates the due diligence that goes into awarding

the funds. “The people who serve on the grant committee with me are entrenched in these communities. They know the organizations asking for the funds, they know how the money is going to be used, and they make sure the grants are going to the right place.”

Most emergency medical technicians and other first responders in rural areas are volunteers. The equipment and vehicles they use are not usually funded by local taxes, so they depend upon donations to cover operating expenses. CIPCO’s $5,000 gift was part of over $18,000 awarded in matching grants last year. CIPCO has earmarked another $5,000 donation for the Rural Health Care Grants program in 2017.

“Working with St. Luke’s Foundation has been a phenomenal experience,” concludes Breheny. “Through the Rural Healthcare Grants program, CIPCO is supporting small organizations that really need our help—organizations providing vital services that do so much good for our rural communities.”

2016 Patient Care Excellence Award Recipients St. Luke’s Foundation’s Patient Care Excellence Award Program recognizes healthcare providers who demonstrate outstanding achievement in their chosen field. Award nominees are recommended by their peers, manager and/or director through a nomination process held annually in each department. Each nominee is then asked to complete an application and write an essay for consideration. The Foundation’s Award Selection Committee determines the Award Recipients.

This program was established by several supporters of St. Luke’s Hospital to recognize our caregivers (nurses, social workers, therapists, etc). These individuals generously donated to the Foundation so a caregiver could receive financial assistance to use for educational purposes or any other intent of the donor.

The Healing Power of Art is a beautiful way to honor the people who have inspired your life. UnityPoint Health - St. Luke’s Hospital and the Nassif Community Cancer Center teamed up with area photographers to capture timeless images, from local landmarks to the wonders of nature. Sponsored photographs are displayed in the hospital, the St. Luke’s Nassif Radiation Center and the Helen G. Nassif Community Cancer Center.

“These photographs contribute to the healing process, in body, mind and spirit,” explains Mary Klinger, St. Luke’s Foundation president. “Research shows artwork can help reduce pain and stress, shorten hospital stays and improve the patient experience.

These images can inspire a patient to get out of his room and walk down the hall. And they can offer a respite for those dealing with a serious health challenge, whether it’s their own or a loved one’s.”

St. Luke’s Auxiliary recently committed $6,000 to the Healing Power of Art project. The image they selected—a cheerful nature photograph— welcomes patients and visitors to the Radiation Center’s reception desk.

The majority of the proceeds from the Healing Power of Art support services at the Nassif Community Cancer Center that are not covered by insurance, such as nutrition consultations, massage therapy and acupuncture. Each 16 x 24 panel is $1,000 and can be used to honor a loved one, celebrate a survivor or make a lasting gift.

A flood of support While the Flood of 2016 was less destructive than the

Great Flood of 2008, its impact was felt throughout our community—including within our UnityPoint Health - St. Luke’s family. More than 60 employees were displaced from their homes or affected by the rising water. The Foundation responded with gift cards to help with clean-up and other basic needs. St. Luke’s team members pitched in with everything from piling up sandbags around a coworker’s house to covering shifts for team members. Help also came from our sister affiliate in Peoria, Illinois. Three years ago when their community was hit by a devastating tornado, team members throughout the UnityPoint Health family offered their support. This time it was UnityPoint Health – Peoria’s turn to reach out, donating $3,000 to the St. Luke’s Foundation Associate Care Fund and personally providing gift baskets to each employee impacted by the flood.
