Enable us by your grace to offer the sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; to proclaim and respond to your holy word. Teach us to pray for your world and your Church. COLLECTS
PRESIDENT: The Lord be with you!
ALL: And also with you!
PRESIDENT: Let us pray.
Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost (BCP page 177)
PRESIDENT: Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: Graft in our hearts the love of your Name; increase in us true religion; nourish us with all goodness; and bring forth in us the fruit of good works; through Jesus Christ
our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.
St. Aidan, Bishop of Lindisfarne
PRESIDENT: O loving God, you called your servant Aidan from the cloister to reestablish the Christian mission in northern England: Grant that we, following his example, may use what you have given us for the relief of human need, and may persevere in commending the saving Gospel of our Redeemer Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
PRESIDENT: Kindly sit for the ministry of the word.
FIRST LESSON: Jeremiah 2:4-13 [Mr. Darren Goodridge]
READER: A Reading from the Word of God, written in the book of Jeremiah, chapter two beginning at the fourth verse.
ILLUMINATION:
READER: Hear the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel. Thus says the Lord: What wrong did your ancestors find in me that they went far from me, and went after worthless things, and became worthless themselves? They did not say, "Where is the Lord who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us in the wilderness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and deep darkness, in a land that no one passes through, where no one lives?" I brought you into a plentiful land to eat its fruits and its good things. But when you entered you defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination. The priests did not say, "Where is the Lord?" Those who handle the law did not know me; the rulers transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal, and went after things that do not profit. Therefore once more I accuse you, says the Lord, and I accuse your children's children. Cross to the coasts of Cyprus and look, send to Kedar and examine with care; see if there has ever been such a thing. Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for something that does not profit. Be appalled, O heavens, at this, be shocked, be utterly desolate, says the Lord, for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and dug out cisterns for themselves, cracked cisterns that can hold no water.
READER: The word of the Lord.
ALL: Thanks be to God.
PSALM 81:1, 11-17
1. Sing we merrily unto God our strength : make a cheerful noise unto the God of Jacob.
11.I am the Lord thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt : open thy mouth wide, and I shall fill it.
12.But my people would not hear my voice : and Israel would not obey me.
13.So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lusts : and let them follow their own imaginations.
14.O that my people would have hearkened unto me : for if Israel had walked in my ways,
15.I should soon have put down their enemies : and turned my hand against their adversaries.
16.The haters of the Lord should have been found liars : but their time should have endured for ever.
17.He should have fed them also with the finest wheat-flour : and with honey out of the stony rock should I have satisfied thee.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
SECOND LESSON: 13:1-8, 15-16 [Ms. Leah Sandiford]
READER: A reading from the word of God written in the book of Hebrews, chapter thirteen, beginning at the first verse.
ILLUMINATION:
READER: Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured. Let marriage be held in honour by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled; for God will judge
fornicators and adulterers. Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, "I will never leave you or forsake you." So we can say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?" Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you; consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Through him, then, let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
READER: The word of the Lord.
ALL: Thanks be to God.
GRADUAL HYMN: 449 - Lord of all hopefulness (verses 1&2)
1 Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy, whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy, be there at our waking, and give us, we pray, your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.
2 Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith, whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe, be there at our labours, and give us, we pray, your strength in our hearts, Lord at the noon of the day.
THE GOSPEL: Luke 14:1, 7-14
PRESIDENT: The Lord be with you.
ALL: And also with you.
PRESIDENT: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke, the fourteenth chapter beginning at the first verse.
ALL: Glory to Christ our Saviour
ILLUMINATION:
PRESIDENT: On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely. When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. "When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, `Give this person your place,' and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, `Friend, move up higher'; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." He said also to the one who had invited him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."
PRESIDENT: This is the Gospel of Christ ALL: Praise to Christ our Lord
HYMN: 449 (verses 3&4)
3 Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace, your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace, be there at our homing, and give us, we pray, your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.
4 Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm, whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm, be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray, your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.
THE SERMON
PRESIDENT: Let us now stand and reaffirm our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ in the words of the Nicene Creed.
NICENE CREED [BCP page 104]
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen or unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died and was buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfilment of the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son He is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

LEADER: Direct those who administer justice; and strengthen those who guard and protect the land.
ALL: That our people may dwell in peace.

LEADER: We thank you, heavenly Father, for the witness of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus, our Lord and Saviour; for the holy Patriarchs, Prophets, Apostles and Martyrs; and all the Saints who have been good examples in their several generations.
Prayer for Young People
ALL: God our Father, we pray for our young people growing up in an unstable and confusing world. Show them that your ways give more meaning to life than the ways of the world, and that following you is better than chasing after selfish goals. Help them to take failure not as a measure of their worth, but as a chance for a new start. Give them strength to hold their faith in you, and to keep alive their joy in your creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
Prayer for God’s protection during this Hurricane Season
ALL: Almighty God, governor of all things in Heaven and earth: Receive now, we pray, our supplications for protection from storms or hurricanes. We acknowledge that we are unworthy for the least of your mercies, yet we humbly pray that you will so hold the winds of heaven that we may dwell safely without fear of evil; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen
PRESIDENT: And finally let us pray for our own needs and those of others.
A period of silence may be kept.
ALL: Accept our prayers and intercessions, Father, according to your wisdom, for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
ACT OF PENITENCE (BCP Page 123)
PRESIDENT: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins, and cleanse us from all un-righteousness.
A period of silence shall be kept.
PRESIDENT: Let us therefore confess our sins.
FORM A (BCP Page 123)
ALL: Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and one another, in thought, word and deed, and in what we have left undone. We are sorry and repent of all our sins. For your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ's sake, forgive us all that is past, and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your Name. Amen
THE ABSOLUTION (BCP Page 124)
PRESIDENT: Almighty God, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
ALL: Amen.

PRESIDENT: The peace of the Lord be always with you.
ALL: And also with you.
PRESIDENT: Let us share that peace.
THE PEACE SONG: Let there be peace on earth
Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me. Let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be. With God as our Father, family all are we. Let us walk with each other in perfect harmony.
Let peace begin with me. Let this be the moment now. With ev’ry breath I take let this be my solemn vow: To take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally.
Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.
OFFERTORY HYMNS: 711, 302
HYMN: 711 - For the beauty of the earth
1 For the beauty of the earth, for the beauty of the skies, for the love which from our birth over and around us lies, Lord of all, to thee we raise this our grateful hymn of praise.
2 For the beauty of each hour of the day and of the night, hill and vale, and tree and flower, sun and moon and stars of light, Lord of all, to thee we raise this our grateful hymn of praise.
3
For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth, and friends above, pleasures pure and undefiled, Lord of all, to thee we raise this our grateful hymn of praise.
4 For each perfect gift of thine, to our race so freely given, graces human and divine, flowers of earth and buds of heaven, Lord of all, to thee we raise this our grateful hymn of praise.
5 For thy church which evermore lifteth holy hands above, offering up on every shore her pure sacrifice of love. Lord of all, to thee we raise this our grateful hymn of praise.
HYMN: 302 - City of God, how broad and far
1 City of God, how broad and far outspread thy walls sublime! The true thy chartered freemen are of every age and clime:
2 One holy church, one army strong, one steadfast, high intent; one working band, one harvest-song, one King omnipotent.
3 How purely hath thy speech come down from man's primeval youth! How grandly hath thine empire grown of freedom, love, and truth!
4
How gleam thy watchfires through the night with never-fainting ray!
How rise thy towers, serene and bright, to meet the dawning day!
5 In vain the surge's angry shock, in vain the drifting sands: unharmed upon the eternal Rock the eternal city stands.
THE PRESENTATION OF OFFERING - FORM B (BCP Page 126)
PRESIDENT AND PEOPLE
Father, we offer to you these gifts which you have given us; this bread, this wine, this money. With them we offer ourselves, our lives, and our work, to become through your Holy Spirit a reasonable, holy, and lively sacrifice. As this bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ, so may we and all your people become channels of your love; through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYERS
SURSUM CORDA
PRESIDENT: The Lord be with you.
ALL: And also with you.
PRESIDENT: Lift up your hearts.
ALL: We lift them up to the Lord.
PRESIDENT: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
ALL: It is right to give God thanks and praise.
PRESIDENT: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Father Almighty, everlasting God:
For you are the source of light and life; you made us in your image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Therefore, we praise you; joining our voices with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:
ALL:
Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might; heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER B (BCP Page 135)
PRESIDENT: Holy and gracious Father, all creation rightly gives you praise. All life, all holiness, comes from you through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, whom you sent to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.
We therefore bring you these gifts, and we ask you to make them holy by the power of your Spirit, that they may become the Body and Blood of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who offered Himself in obedience to your will, the Perfect Sacrifice for all mankind.
On the night he was betrayed, he took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, He broke it and gave it to his disciples and said: "Take this and eat it: "This is my Body which is given for you. "Do this for the remembrance of me."
After supper he took the cup of wine and when he had given thanks He gave it to them and said: "Drink this, all of you: "This is my Blood of the New Covenant, "Which is shed for you and for many "for the forgiveness of sins. "Do this, whenever you drink it, "For the remembrance of me."
ALL: When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, we proclaim the death of Christ until he comes again.
PRESIDENT: Father, calling to mind the death your Son endured for our salvation; His Glorious Resurrection and Ascension; His continual intercession for us in heaven; and looking for His coming again in glory, we offer you, in thanksgiving, this holy and life-giving sacrifice.
Look with favour on your Church's offering, and grant that we who eat and drink these holy gifts may be filled with your Holy Spirit and become one body in Christ, and serve you in unity, constancy and peace.
May He make us a perpetual offering to you and enable us, in communion with blessed Mary, St. Lucy and the whole company of heaven, to share in the inheritance of your saints.
With Him, and in Him, and through Him, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father Almighty, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven in songs of everlasting praise:
ALL Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen.
THE LORD’S PRAYER (BCP Page 144)
PRESIDENT: As our Saviour has taught us, so we pray:
ALL: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.
THE BREAKING OF BREAD (BCP Page 145)
PRESIDENT: We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
ALL: Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
THE AGNUS DEI (BCP Page 147)
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: grant us peace.
THE INVITATION (BCP Page 145-146)
FORM B
PRESIDENT: The Gifts of God for the People of God.
ALL: Our souls will feast and be satisfied, and we will sing glad songs of praise to Him.
COMMUNION HYMNS: 625, 608, 578
HYMN: 625 - We come as guests invited
1 We come as guests invited when Jesus bids us dine, his friends on earth united to share the bread and wine; the bread of life is broken, the wine is freely poured for us, in solemn token of Christ our dying Lord.
2 We eat and drink, receiving from Christ the grace we need, and in our hearts believing on him by faith we feed; with wonder and thanksgiving for love that knows no end, we find in Jesus living our ever-present friend.
3
One bread is ours for sharing, one single fruitful vine, our fellowship declaring renewed in bread and wine; renewed, sustained and given by token, sign and word, the pledge and seal of heaven, the love of Christ our Lord.
HYMN: 608 - My God, and is thy table spread
1 My God, and is thy table spread, and doth thy cup with love o'erflow? Thither be all thy children led, and let them all thy sweetness know.
2 Hail, sacred feast, which Jesus makes, Rich banquet of his flesh and blood! Thrice happy he who here partakes that sacred stream, that heavenly food.
3 Why are its dainties all in vain before unwilling hearts displayed? Was not for them the Victim slain? Are they forbid the children's Bread?
4 O let thy table honoured be, and furnished well with joyful guests; and may each soul salvation see, that here its sacred pledges tastes.
5 To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost the God whom heaven and earth adore, from men and from the angel-host be praise and glory evermore.
HYMN: 578 - Come, risen Lord
1 Come, risen Lord, and deign to be our guest; nay, let us be thy guests; the feast is thine; thyself at thine own board make manifest, in thine own sacrament of bread and wine.
2 We meet, as in that upper room they met; thou at the table, blessing, yet dost stand: `This is my body': so thou givest yet: faith still receives the cup as from thy hand.
3 One body we, one body who partake, one church united in communion blest; one name we bear, one bread of life we break, with all thy saints on earth and saints at rest.
4 One with each other, Lord, for one in thee, who art one Saviour and one living Head; then open thou our eyes, that we may see; be known to us in breaking of the bread.
HYMNS FOR BLESSING: 539, 318
HYMN: 539 - Take my life and let it be
1 Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee; take my moments and my days, let them flow in ceaseless praise.
2 Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of thy love; take my feet, and let them be swift and beautiful for thee.
3 Take my voice, and let me sing always, only, for my King; take my lips and let them be filled with messages from thee.
4
Take my silver and my gold; not a mite would I withhold. Take my intellect, and use every power as thou shalt choose.
5 Take my will, and make it thine; it shall be no longer mine; take my heart: it is thine own; it shall be thy royal throne.
6 Take my love; my Lord, I pour at thy feet its treasure-store. Take myself, and I will be ever, only, all for thee.
HYMN: 318 - Fill your hearts with joy and gladness
1 Fill your hearts with joy and gladness, sing and praise your God and mine! Great the Lord in love and wisdom, might and majesty divine! He who framed the starry heavens knows and names them as they shine.
2 Praise the Lord, his people, praise him! Wounded souls his comfort know; those who fear him find his mercies, peace for pain and joy for woe; humble hearts are high exalted, human pride and power laid low.
3 Praise the Lord for times and seasons, cloud and sunshine, wind and rain; spring to melt the snows of winter till the waters flow again; grass upon the mountain pastures, golden valleys thick with grain.
4
Fill your hearts with joy and gladness, peace and plenty crown your days; love his laws, declare his judgments, walk in all his words and ways; he the Lord and we his children-praise the Lord, all people, praise!
