OPENING PRAYER

INTROIT HYMN: 383 - Praise, my soul, the King of heaven

1 Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; to his feet thy tribute bring; ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, who like me his praise should sing? Alleluia, alleluia! Praise the everlasting King.

2 Praise him for his grace and favour to our fathers in distress; praise him still the same as ever, slow to chide and swift to bless: alleluia! Alleluia! Glorious in his faithfulness.

3 Father-like, he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows; in his hands he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes: alleluia! Alleluia! Widely as his mercy flows.

4 Angels, help us to adore him; ye behold him face to face; sun and moon, bow down before him, dwellers all in time and space: alleluia! Alleluia! Praise with us the God of grace.

PRESIDENT: Kindly be seated for the ministry of the word.

FIRST LESSON: Genesis 12:1-9 [Mrs. Patricia Branker]

READER: A Reading from the Word of God, written in the book of Genesis, chapter twelve, beginning at the first verse.

ILLUMINATION:

READER: Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. Abram took his wife Sarai and his brother’s son Lot, and all the possessions that they had gathered, and the persons whom they had acquired in Haran; and they set forth to go to the land of Canaan. When they had come to the land of Canaan, Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. Then the Lord appeared to Abram, and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. From there he moved on to the hill country on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to the Lord and invoked the name of the Lord. And Abram journeyed on by stages toward the Negeb.

READER: The word of the Lord.

ALL: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 33:1-12

1. Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous : for it becometh well the just to be thankful.

2. Praise the Lord with harp : sing praises unto him with the lute, and instrument of ten strings.

3. Sing unto the Lord a new song : sing praises lustily unto him with a good courage.

4. For the word of the Lord is true : and all his works are faithful.

5. He loveth righteousness and judgement : the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.

6. By the word of the Lord were the heavens made : and all the hosts of them by the breath of his mouth.

7. He gathereth the waters of the sea together, as it were upon an heap : and layeth up the deep, as in a treasure-house.

8. Let all the earth fear the Lord : stand in awe of him, all ye that dwell in the world.

9. For he spake, and it was done : he commanded, and it stood fast.

10.The Lord bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought : and maketh the devices of the people to be of none effect, and casteth out the counsels of princes.

11.The counsel of the Lord shall endure for ever : and the thoughts of his heart from generation to generation.

12.Blessed are the people, whose God is the Lord Jehovah : and blessed are the folk, that he hath chosen to him to be his inheritance.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

SECOND LESSON: Romans 4:13-25 [Mrs. Kathryn Skeete]

READER: A reading from the word of God written in Paul’s letter to the Romans, chapter four beginning at the thirteenth verse.

ILLUMINATION:

READER: The promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, as it is

written, “I have made you the father of many nations”) in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. Hoping against hope, he believed that he would become “the father of many nations,” according to what was said, “So numerous shall your descendants be.” He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was already as good as dead (for he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. Therefore his faith “was reckoned to him as righteousness.” Now the words, “it was reckoned to him,” were written not for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be reckoned to us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was handed over to death for our trespasses and was raised for our justification.

READER: The word of the Lord.

ALL: Thanks be to God.

GRADUAL HYMN: 314 - God of mercy, God of grace (verses 1-2)

1 God of mercy, God of grace, show the brightness of thy face; shine upon us, Saviour, shine, fill thy Church with light divine, and thy saving health extend unto earth's remotest end.

2 Let the people praise thee, Lord; be by all that live adored; Let the nations shout and sing glory to their Saviour King; at thy feet their tribute pay, and thy holy will obey.

THE GOSPEL: Matthew 9:9-13, 18-26

DEACON: The Lord be with you.

ALL: And also with you.

DEACON: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew, the ninth chapter beginning at the ninth verse.

ALL: Glory to Christ our Saviour

ILLUMINATION:

DEACON: As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him. And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” But when he heard this, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.” While he was saying these things to them, suddenly a leader of the synagogue came in and knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died; but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.” And Jesus got up and followed him, with his disciples. Then suddenly a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak, for she said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be made well.” Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well. When Jesus came to the leader’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion, he said, “Go away; for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him. But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl got up. And the report of this spread throughout that district.

DEACON: This is the Gospel of Christ

ALL: Praise to Christ our Lord

HYMN: 314

3 Let the people praise thee, Lord; Earth shall then her fruits afford; God to man his blessing give, man to God devoted live; all below, and all above, one in joy, and light and love.

(verse 3)

THE SERMON

PRESIDENT: Let us now stand and reaffirm our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ in the words of the Nicene Creed.

NICENE CREED [BCP page 104]

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen or unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died and was buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfilment of the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father.

With the Father and the Son He is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

SONG FOR THE GREETING OF PEACE: 272 (MP) - I have decided to follow Jesus

1 I have decided to follow Jesus; I have decided to follow Jesus; I have decided to follow Jesus; No turning back; no turning back.

2 The world behind me, the cross before me; The world behind me, the cross before me; The world behind me, the cross before me; No turning back, no turning back.

3 Though none go with me, I still will follow; Though none go with me, I still will follow; Though none go with me, I still will follow; No turning back; no turning back.

4 Will you decide now to follow Jesus? Will you decide now to follow Jesus? Will you decide now to follow Jesus? No turning back; no turning back.

OFFERTORY HYMNS: 480, 474

HYMN:480 - Thy way, not mine, O Lord

1 Thy way, not mine, O Lord, however dark it be; lead me by thine own hand, choose out the path for me.

2 Smooth let it be, or rough, it will be still the best; winding or straight it leads right onward to thy rest.

3 I dare not choose my lot; I would not if I might: choose thou for me, my God, so shall I walk aright.

4 The Kingdom that I seek is thine; so let the way that leads to it be thine, else I must surely stray.

5 Take thou my cup, and it with joy or sorrow fill, as best to thee may seem; choose thou my good and ill.

6 Choose thou for me my friends, my sickness or my health. choose thou my cares for me, my poverty or wealth.

7 Not mine, not mine the choice in things or great and small; be thou my guide, my strength, my wisdom, and my all.

HYMN: 474 - Rock of ages cleft for me

1 Rock of ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee; let the water and the blood from thy riven side which flowed, be of sin the double cure: cleanse me from its guilt and power.

2 Not the labours of my hands can fulfil thy law's demands; could my zeal no respite know, could my tears for ever flow, all for sin could not atone; thou must save, and thou alone.

3 Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to thy cross I cling; naked, come to thee for dress; helpless, look to thee for grace; foul, I to the fountain fly; wash me, Saviour, or I die.

4 While I draw this fleeting breath, when my eyelids close in death, when I soar through tracts unknown see thee on thy judgment throne; Rock of ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee.

THE

PRESENTATION OF OFFERING - FORM B (BCP Page 126)

PRESIDENT AND PEOPLE

Father, we offer to you these gifts which you have given us; this bread, this wine, this money. With them we offer ourselves, our lives, and our work, to become through your Holy Spirit a reasonable, holy, and lively sacrifice. As this bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ, so may we and all your people become channels of your love; through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYERS

SURSUM CORDA

PRESIDENT: The Lord be with you.

ALL: And also with you.

PRESIDENT: Lift up your hearts.

ALL: We lift them up to the Lord.

PRESIDENT: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

ALL: It is right to give God thanks and praise.

PRESIDENT: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Father Almighty, everlasting God:

For by water and the Holy Spirit you have made us a new people in Jesus Christ our Lord, to show forth your glory in all the world.

Therefore, we praise you; joining our voices with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

ALL: Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might; heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER D

(BCP Page 140)

PRESIDENT: All glory, praise and thanksgiving be unto you, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting God, you created the world and all mankind, and of your tender mercy gave your only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon Him, and to suffer death upon the cross, for our redemption, He made there, by His own oblation of Himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation

and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world; and He instituted, and in his holy Gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of His precious death, until His coming again.

Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech you; and be pleased to accept, bless and sanctify these gifts and creatures of bread and wine; that they may be for us the Body and Blood of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.

For, on the night He was betrayed He took bread, and when He had given thanks to you, He broke it and gave it to His disciples and said: “Take this, and eat it: This is my Body which is given for you, Do this for the remembrance of me.”

And after supper He took the cup of wine: and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

PRESIDENT: In faith we acclaim You, O Christ

ALL: Dying, You destroyed our death; Rising, You restored our life; Christ Jesus, come in glory.

PRESIDENT: Now therefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we your servants with all your holy people, having in remembrance the blessed passion, mighty resurrection, and glorious ascension of your beloved Son, do offer unto your Divine Majesty this Bread of eternal life and this Cup of everlasting salvation, rendering thanks to you for the wonderful redemption which you have made possible for us in Him.

And we beseech you O Father, to accept upon your heavenly altar, this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and to grant that by the merits and death of your Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in His blood, we and all your whole Church may obtain remission of our sins and all other benefits of His passion.

And we pray that by the power of your Holy Spirit all who shall be partakers of this holy Communion may be filled with your grace and heavenly benediction; and be numbered in the glorious company of your Saints.

And here we offer and present unto you, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy and lively sacrifice. And although we are unworthy to offer unto you any sacrifice, yet we beseech you to accept this, our bounden duty and service, not weighing our merits but pardoning our offences;

Through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto you, O Father Almighty, throughout all ages, world without end.

ALL: Amen

PRESIDENT: As our Saviour has taught us, so we pray:

THE LORD’S PRAYER

PRESIDENT: As our Saviour has taught us, so we pray:

HYMN: 552 (MP) - Our Father who is in heaven

1 Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done, hallowed be Your name.

2 On earth as it is in heaven, hallowed be Your name, give us this day our daily bread, hallowed be Your name.

3 Forgive us all our trespasses, hallowed be Your name, as we forgive those who trespass against us, hallowed be Your name.

4 And lead us not into temptation, hallowed be Your name, but deliver us from all that is evil, hallowed be Your name.

5 For Yours is the kingdom, the power and the glory, hallowed be Your name, for ever and for ever, hallowed be Your name.

6 Amen, amen, it shall be so, hallowed be Your name, amen, amen, it shall be so, hallowed be Your name.

THE BREAKING OF BREAD (BCP Page 145)

PRESIDENT: We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

ALL: Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

ALL: Our souls will feast and be satisfied, and we will sing glad songs of praise to Him.

COMMUNION HYMNS: 582, 608, 611

HYMN: 582 - Draw us in the Spirit’s tether

1 Draw us in the Spirit's tether, for when humbly in your name, two or three are met together, you are in the midst of them; alleluia, alleluia! Touch we now your garment's hem.

2 As disciples used to gather in the name of Christ to sup, then with thanks to God the Father break the bread and bless the cup, alleluia, alleluia! So now bind our friendship up.

3 All our meals and all our living make as sacraments of you, that by caring, helping, giving, we may be disciples true. Alleluia, alleluia! We will serve with faith anew.

HYMN: 608 - My God, and is thy table spread

1 My God, and is thy table spread, and doth thy cup with love o'erflow? Thither be all thy children led, and let them all thy sweetness know.

2 Hail, sacred feast, which Jesus makes, rich banquet of his flesh and blood! Thrice happy he who here partakes that sacred stream, that heavenly food.

3 Why are its dainties all in vain before unwilling hearts displayed? Was not for them the Victim slain? Are they forbid the children's Bread?

4 O let thy table honoured be, and furnished well with joyful guests; and may each soul salvation see, that here its sacred pledges tastes.

5 To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost the God whom heaven and earth adore, from men and from the angel-host be praise and glory evermore.

HYMN: 611 - O Food that weary pilgrims love

1 O Food that weary pilgrims love, O Bread of angel-hosts above, O Manna of the saints, the hungry soul would feed on thee; ne'er may the heart unsolaced be which for thy sweetness faints.

2 O fount of love, O cleansing tide, which from the Saviour's piercéd side and sacred heart dost flow, be ours to drink of thy pure rill, which only can our spirits fill, and all our need bestow.

3 Lord Jesu, whom, by power divine now hidden ‘neath the outward sign, we worship and adore, grant, when the veil away is rolled, with open face we may behold thyself for evermore.

HYMNS FOR BLESSING: 646, 748 (MP)

HYMN: 646 - Gentle Jesus, meek and mild

1 Gentle Jesus, meek and mild, look upon a little child. pity my simplicity, suffer me to come to thee.

2 Fain I would to thee be brought; gracious Lord, forbid it not; in the kingdom of thy grace give a little child a place.

3 Fain I would be as thou art; give me thy obedient heart: thou art pitiful and kind; let me have thy loving mind.

4 Let me above all fulfill God my heavenly Father’s will: never his good Spirit grieve, only to his glory live.

5 Lamb of God, I look to thee; thou shalt my example be: thou art gentle, meek and mild; thou wast once a little child

6 Thou didst live to God alone; thou didst never seek thine own; thou thyself didst never please: God was all thy happiness.

7 Loving Jesus, gentle Lamb, in thy gracious hands I am: make me, Saviour, what thou art; live thyself within my heart.

8 I shall then show forth thy praise, serve thee all my happy days; then the world shall always see Christ, the holy Child, in me.

I have light in my soul for which long I had sought, since Jesus came into my heart.

Refrain:

Since Jesus came into my heart, since Jesus came into my heart, floods of joy o'er my soul like sea billows roll, since Jesus came into my heart.

2 I have ceased from my wandering and going astray since Jesus came into my heart!

And my sins which were many are all washed away, since Jesus came into my heart.

Refrain

3 I'm possessed of a hope that is steadfast and sure, since Jesus came into my heart!

And no dark clouds of doubt now my pathway obscure, since Jesus came into my heart.

Refrain

4 There's a light in the valley of death now for me, since Jesus came into my heart; And the gates of the city beyond I can see, since Jesus came into my heart.
