ORDER OF SERVICE

OPENING PRAYER

INTROIT HYMN: 792 - Songs of praise the angels sang

1 Songs of praise the angels sang, heaven with alleluias rang when creation was begun, when God spoke and it was done.

2 Songs of praise awoke the morn when the Prince of Peace was born; songs of praise arose when he captive led captivity.

3 Heaven and earth must pass away; songs of praise shall crown that day. God will make new heavens and earth; songs of praise shall hail their birth.

4 And will man alone be dumb till that glorious kingdom come? No, the church delights to raise psalms and hymns and songs of praise.

5 Saints below, with heart and voice, still in songs of praise rejoice, learning here, by faith and love, songs of praise to sing above.

6 Hymns of glory, songs of praise, Father, unto thee we raise, Jesu, glory unto thee with the Spirit ever be.

St. Michael & All Angels (BCP page 189)

PRESIDENT: Everlasting God, you have ordained and constituted in a wonderful order the ministries of angels and mortals: Mercifully grant that, as your holy angels always serve and worship you in heaven, so by your appointment they may help and defend us here on earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.. Amen.

Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost (BCP page 178)

PRESIDENT: O God, you declare your almighty power chiefly in showing mercy and pity: Grant us the fullness of your grace, that we, running to obtain your promises, may become partakers of your heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRESIDENT: Kindly be seated for the ministry of the word.

FIRST LESSON: Proverbs 8:22-31 [Mrs. Beverley Edwards]

READER: A Reading from the Word of God, written in the book of Proverbs, chapter eight beginning at the twenty-second verse.

ILLUMINATION:

READER: The Lord created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of long ago. Ages ago I was set up at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth when he had not yet made earth and fields, or the world's first bits of soil. When he established the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside him, like a master worker; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the human race."

READER: The word of the Lord.

ALL: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 148

1. O praise the Lord of heaven : praise him in the height.

2. Praise him, all ye angels of his : praise him, all his host.

3. Praise him, sun and moon : praise him, all ye stars and light.

4. Praise him, all ye heavens : and ye waters that are above the heavens.

5. Let them praise the Name of the Lord : for he spake the word, and they were made; he commanded, and they were created.

6. He hath made them fast for ever and ever : he hath given them a law which shall not be broken.

7. Praise the Lord upon earth : ye dragons, and all deeps;

8. Fire and hail, snow and vapours : wind and storm, fulfilling his word;

9. Mountains and all hills : fruitful trees and all cedars;

10.Beasts and all cattle : worms and feathered fowls;

11.Kings of the earth and all people : princes and all judges of the world;

12.Young men and maidens, old men and children, praise the Name of the Lord : for his Name only is excellent, and his praise above heaven and earth.

13.He shall exalt the horn of his people; all his saints shall praise him : even the children of Israel, even the people that serveth him.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

SECOND LESSON: Colossians 1:15-20 [Mrs. Marquita Sandiford]

READER: A reading from the word of God written in the book of Colossians, chapter one, beginning at the fifteenth verse.

ILLUMINATION:

READER: Christ Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers-- all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.

READER: The word of the Lord.

ALL: Thanks be to God.

GRADUAL HYMN: 798 - Stars of the morning (verses 1-3)

1 Stars of the morning, so gloriously bright, filled with celestial resplendence and light, these that, where night never followeth day, raise the Trisagion ever and ay:

2 These are thy counsellors, these dost thou own, Lord God of Sabaoth, nearest thy throne; these are thy ministers, these dost thou send, help of the helpless ones, us to defend.

3 These keep the guard amidst Salem's dear bowers, thrones, principalities, virtues and powers, where, with the living ones, mystical four, Cherubim, Seraphim bow and adore.

THE GOSPEL: John 6:41 - 51

PRESIDENT: The Lord be with you.

ALL: And also with you.

PRESIDENT: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John, the sixth chapter beginning at the forty-first verse.

ALL: Glory to Christ our Saviour

ILLUMINATION:

PRESIDENT: Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” They were saying, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” Jesus answered them, “Do not complain among yourselves. No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day. It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

PRESIDENT: This is the Gospel of Christ. ALL: Praise to Christ our Lord.

HYMN: 798 (verses 4-6)

4 ‘Who like the Lord?’ thunders Michael the Chief; Raphael, ‘the Cure of God’, comforteth grief; and, as at Nazareth, prophet of peace, Gabriel, ‘the light of God’, bringeth release.

5 Then, when the earth was first poised in mid-space, then, when the planets first sped on their race, then, when were ended the six days' employ, then all the Sons of God shouted for joy.

6 Still let them succour us; still let them fight, Lord of angelic hosts, battling for right; till, where their anthems they ceaselessly pour, we with the angels may bow and adore.

THE SERMON

PRESIDENT: Let us now stand and reaffirm our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ in the words of the Nicene Creed.

NICENE CREED [BCP page 104]

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen or unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died and was buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfilment of the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father.

With the Father and the Son He is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

INTERCESSION FORM B (BCP Page 107) [Ushers]

LEADER: Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; ALL: That we all may be one.

LEADER: Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; ALL: That your Name may be glorified by all people.

LEADER: We pray for all Bishops, Priests, and Deacons; ALL: That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments.

LEADER: We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; ALL: That there may be justice and peace on the earth.

LEADER: Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; ALL: That our works may find favour in your sight.

LEADER: Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; ALL: That they may be delivered from their distress.

LEADER: Give to the departed eternal rest; ALL: Let light perpetual shine upon them.

LEADER: We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; ALL: May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.

Ushers’ Prayer

READER: Lord, you made all kinds of people, even people like me. In your love you gather them into your Church. As you gather your people this day, help me to serve them in a Christlike manner, even as your Son served those who gathered about him. Make me prayerful and patient, helpful and understanding, and may I radiate the joy that faith brings as I serve their needs. Give me your strength to support my fellow ministers. May all who assemble to celebrate our common faith in the risen Saviour be glad of heart for being here and for having encountered your Son in one another, in our priest, at the tables of the book and the Bread, and through the ministry of ushers like me. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Choristers’ Prayer

READER: Bless, O Lord, us your servants who minister in your temple. Grant that what we sing with our lips we may believe in our hearts, and what we believe in our hearts we may show forth in our lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for God’s protection during this Hurricane Season

ALL: Almighty God, governor of all things in Heaven and earth: Receive now, we pray, our supplications for protection from storms or hurricanes. We acknowledge that we are unworthy for the least of your mercies, yet we humbly pray that you will so hold the winds of heaven that we may dwell safely without fear of evil; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen

LEADER: Let us pray for our own needs and those of others.

ALL: Almighty God, to whom our needs are known before we ask, help us to ask only what accords to your will; and the good things which we dare not, or in our blindness cannot ask, grant us for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

ACT OF

PENITENCE

(BCP Page 123)

PRESIDENT: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins, and cleanse us from all un-righteousness.

PRESIDENT: Let us therefore confess our sins.

FORM B (BCP Page 124)

ALL: Most Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we have not loved ourselves as we ought. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen

THE ABSOLUTION (BCP Page 124)

PRESIDENT: Almighty God, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

ALL: Amen.

THE GREETING OF PEACE (BCP Page 124-125)

FORM C

PRESIDENT: The Kingdom of God is justice, peace, and joy, inspired by the Holy Spirit.

ALL: They who thus serve Christ are acceptable to God and approved by others.

PRESIDENT: The peace of the Lord be always with you.

ALL: And also with you.

PRESIDENT: Let us share that peace.

SONG FOR THE PEACE: I’ve got peace like a river

1 I've got peace like a river, I've got peace like a river, I've got peace like a river in my soul. I've got peace like a river, I've got peace like a river, I've got peace like a river in my soul.

2

I've got love like an ocean, I've got love like an ocean, I've got love like an ocean in my soul. I've got love like an ocean, I've got love like an ocean, I've got love like an ocean in my soul.

3 I've got joy like a fountain, I've got joy like a fountain, I've got joy like a fountain in my soul. I've got joy like a fountain, I've got joy like a fountain, I've got joy like a fountain in my soul.

OFFERTORY HYMNS: 246, 228

HYMN: 246 - All hail the power of Jesus' name

1 All hail the power of Jesus' name! Let angels prostrate fall; bring forth the royal diadem and crown him Lord of all.

2 Crown him, ye morning stars of light, who fixed this floating ball; now hail the strength of Israel's might, and crown him Lord of all.

3 Crown him, ye martyrs of your God, who from his altar call; extol the Stem of Jesse's Rod, and crown him Lord of all.

4 Ye seed of Israel's chosen race, ye ransomed of the fall, hail him who saves you by his grace, and crown him Lord of all.

5

Sinners, whose love can ne'er forget the wormwood and the gall, go spread your trophies at his feet, and crown him Lord of all.

6 Let every tribe and every tongue before him prostrate fall, and shout in universal song the crownèd Lord of all.

HYMN: 228 - Immortal, invisible, God only wise

1 Immortal, invisible, God only wise, in light inaccessible hid from our eyes, most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.

2 Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; thy justice, like mountains, high soaring above thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.

3 To all life thou givest, to both great and small; in all life thou livest, the true life of all; we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, and wither and perish; but naught changeth thee.

4 Great Father of glory, pure Father of light, thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; all laud we would render: O help us to see 'tis only the splendour of light hideth thee.

THE PRESENTATION OF OFFERING - FORM B (BCP Page 126)

PRESIDENT AND PEOPLE

Father, we offer to you these gifts which you have given us; this bread, this wine, this money. With them we offer ourselves, our lives, and our work, to become through your Holy Spirit a reasonable, holy, and lively sacrifice. As this bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ, so may we and all your people become channels of your love; through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYERS

SURSUM CORDA

PRESIDENT: The Lord be with you.

ALL: And also with you.

PRESIDENT: Lift up your hearts.

ALL: We lift them up to the Lord.

PRESIDENT: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

ALL: It is right to give God thanks and praise.

PRESIDENT: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Father Almighty, everlasting God:

For in the mystery of Your Godhead, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, You have revealed Your glory; three Persons equal in majesty, undivided in splendour, yet one Lord, one God, ever to be worshipped and glorified.

Therefore, we praise you; joining our voices with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

ALL: Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might; heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER B

(BCP Page 135)

PRESIDENT: Holy and gracious Father, all creation rightly gives you praise. All life, all holiness, comes from you through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, whom you sent to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

We therefore bring you these gifts, and we ask you to make them holy by the power of your Spirit, that they may become the Body and Blood of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who offered Himself in obedience to your will, the Perfect Sacrifice for all mankind.

On the night he was betrayed, he took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, He broke it and gave it to his disciples and said: "Take this and eat it: "This is my Body which is given for you. "Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper he took the cup of wine and when he had given thanks He gave it to them and said: "Drink this, all of you: "This is my Blood of the New Covenant, "Which is shed for you and for many "for the forgiveness of sins. "Do this, whenever you drink it, "For the remembrance of me."

ALL: When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, we proclaim the death of Christ until he comes again.

PRESIDENT: Father, calling to mind the death your Son endured for our salvation; His Glorious Resurrection and Ascension; His continual intercession for us in heaven; and looking for His coming again in glory, we offer you, in thanksgiving, this holy and life-giving sacrifice.

Look with favour on your Church's offering, and grant that we who eat and drink these holy gifts may be filled with your Holy Spirit and become one body in Christ, and serve you in unity, constancy and peace.

May He make us a perpetual offering to you and enable us, in communion with blessed Mary and the whole company of heaven, to share in the inheritance of your saints.

With Him, and in Him, and through Him, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father Almighty, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven in songs of everlasting praise:

ALL

Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER (BCP Page 144)

PRESIDENT: As our Saviour has taught us, so we pray:

ALL: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF BREAD (BCP Page 145)

PRESIDENT: We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

ALL: Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

THE AGNUS DEI (BCP Page 147)

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: grant us peace.

THE INVITATION (BCP Page 145-146)

FORM B

PRESIDENT: The Gifts of God for the People of God.

ALL: Our souls will feast and be satisfied, and we will sing glad songs of praise to Him.

COMMUNION HYMNS: 572, 576, 579, 591

HYMN: 572 - Be still my soul! For God is near

1 Be still, my soul! For God is near! The great High Priest is with thee now; The Lord of life himself is near, before whose face the angels bow.

2 To make thy heart his lowly throne Thy Saviour God in love draws nigh; he gives himself unto his own, for whom he once came down to die.

3 He pleads before the mercy-seat; he pleads with God; he pleads for thee; he gives thee bread from heaven to eat, his flesh and blood in mystery.

4 I come, O Lord! For thou dost call to blend my pleading prayer with thine; to thee I give myself- my all, and feed on thee and make thee mine.

HYMN: 576 - By Christ redeemed in Christ restored

1 By Christ redeemed, in Christ restored, we keep the memory adored, and show the death of our dear Lord until he come.

2 His body, broken in our stead, is here in this memorial bread, and so our feeble love is fed until he come.

3 The drops of his dread agony, his life-blood shed for us, we see; the wine shall tell the mystery until he come.

4

And thus that dark betrayal night with the last advent we unite, by one blest chain of loving rite, until he come.

5 O blessèd hope! With this elate, let not our hearts be desolate, but, strong in faith, in patience wait until he come.

HYMN: 579 - Come with us O blessed Jesus

1 Come with us, O blessed Jesus, with us evermore to be; and, though leaving now thine altar, let us nevermore leave thee. Be thou one with us for ever, in our life thy love divine our own flesh and blood has taken, and to us thou givest thine.

2 Come with us. O mighty Saviour, God from God, and Light from Light; thou art God, thy glory veiling, so that we may bear the sight. Now we go to seek and serve thee, through our work as through our prayer; grant us light to see and know thee, in thy people everywhere.

3 Come with us, O King of glory, by angelic voices praised; in our hearts as in thy heaven, be enraptured anthems raised. Let the mighty chorus ever sing its glad exultant songs; let its hymn be heard for ever peace for which creation longs.

HYMN: 591 - How glorious is the life above

1 How glorious is the life above, which in this ordinance we taste; that fullness of celestial love, that joy which shall for ever last.

2 That heavenly life in Christ concealed these earthen vessels could not bear; the part which now we find revealed no tongue of angels can declare.

3 The light of life eternal darts into our souls a dazzling ray; a drop of heaven o'erflows our hearts, and deluges the house of clay.

4 Sure pledge of ecstasies unknown shall this divine Communion be; the ray shall rise into a sun, the drop shall swell into a sea.

HYMNS FOR BLESSING: 791, 794

HYMN: 791 - Around the throne of God a band

1 Around the throne of God a band of glorious angels ever stand; bright things they see, sweet harps they hold, and on their heads are crowns of gold.

2 Some wait around him, ready still to sing his praise and do his will; and some, when he commands them, go to guard His servants here below.

3

Lord, give thy angels every day command to guide us on our way, and bid them every evening keep their watch around us while we sleep.

4 So shall no wicked thing draw near to do us harm or cause us fear; and we shall dwell, when life is past, with angels round thy throne at last.

HYMN: 794 – Christ the fair glory of the holy angels

1 Christ, the fair glory of the holy angels, ruler of all, and author of creation, grant us in mercy grace to win by patience joys everlasting.

2 Send thine archangel Michael from thy presence peacemaker blessèd, may he hover o'er us hallow our dwellings, that for us thy children all things may prosper.

3 Send thine archangel Gabriel, the mighty; on strong wings flying, may he come from heaven drive from thy temple Satan the old foeman, succour our weakness.

4 Send thine archangel Raphael, the healer through him with wholesome medicines of salvation heal our backsliding, and in paths of goodness guide our steps daily.

5 Father Almighty, Son, and Holy Spirit, Godhead eternal, grant us our petition; thine be the glory through the whole creation now and for ever.

THE DISMISSAL

POST COMMUNION PRAYER C

(BCP Page 148)

ALL: Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To Him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honour and glory, now and forever more. Amen.

BLESSING:

PRESIDENT: God the Holy Trinity make you strong in faith and love, defend you on every side, and guide you in truth and peace; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be among you and remain with you always.

ALL: Amen.

3 Ye saints, who toil below, adore your heavenly king, and onward as ye go some joyful anthem sing; take what he gives and praise him still, through good and ill, who ever lives.
