ORDER OF SERVICE
OPENING PRAYER
INTROIT HYMN: 201 - Come, thou Holy Spirit, come
1 Come, thou Holy Spirit, come; and from thy celestial home shed a ray of light divine; come, thou Father of the poor, come, thou source of all our store, come, within our bosoms shine:
2 Thou of comforters the best, thou the soul's most welcome guest, sweet refreshment here below; in our labour rest most sweet, grateful coolness in the heat, solace in the midst of woe.
3 O most blessèd Light divine, shine within these hearts of thine, and our inmost being fill; where thou art not, man hath naught, nothing good in deed or thought, nothing free from taint of ill.
4 Heal our wounds; our strength renew; on our dryness pour thy dew; wash the stains of guilt away: bend the stubborn heart and will; melt the frozen, warm the chill; guide the steps that go astray.
5 On the faithful, who adore and confess thee, evermore In thy sevenfold gifts descend: give them virtue's sure reward, give them thy salvation, Lord, give them joys that never end.

THE DECLARATION
In the Sacrament of Confirmation, the church prays that persons will be further empowered by the Holy Spirit for Christian witness and ministry. This is a new stage in the continuous deepening of a relationship with God that began at Baptism. Those who were baptized in infancy now make a public confession of faith and commitment to Christ and the Church. In Confirmation the Spirit continues to enlighten, free, transform and sanctify those who in baptism were adopted as children of God.
The laying on of hands by the Bishop is a sign of the Church’s affirmation of this mature choice and a renewed commitment to support the one who has now come for confirmation.
Let us therefore pray that those who now come for Confirmation, strengthened by the Holy Spirit, may continue to live in righteousness and true holiness all their days.
BISHOP: The Lord be with you.
ALL: And also with you.
Let us pray THE COLLECTS
Holy Confirmation (BCP page 199)
Grant Almighty God, that we, who have been redeemed from the old life of sin by our baptism into the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ, may be renewed in your Holy Spirit, and live in righteousness and true holiness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Day of Pentecost: Whitsunday (BCP page 172)
PRESIDENT: Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirt: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the gospel and the administration of the Holy Sacraments, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
FIRST LESSON: NUMBERS 11:24-30 [Ms. Zarina Griffith]
READER: A reading from the Word of God, written in the book of Numbers, chapter eleven, beginning at the twenty-fourth verse.
ILLUMINATION:
READER: Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord; and he gathered seventy elders of the people, and placed them all around the tent. Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders; and when the spirit rested upon them,
they prophesied. But they did not do so again. Two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the spirit rested on them; they were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp. And a young man ran and told Moses, "Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp." And Joshua son of Nun, the assistant of Moses, one of his chosen men, said, "My lord Moses, stop them!" But Moses said to him, "Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the Lord's people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit on them!" And Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.
PSALM 104:25-35, 37
24 O Lord, how manifold are thy works: in wisdom hast thou made them all; the earth is full of thy riches.
25 So is the great and wide sea also: wherein are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts.
26 There go the ships, and there is that Leviathan: whom thou hast made to take his pastime therein.
27 These wait all upon thee: that thou mayest give them meat in due season.
28 When thou givest it them they gather it: and when thou openest thy hand they are filled with good.
29 When thou hidest thy face they are troubled: when thou takest away their breath they die, and are turned again to their dust.
30 When thou lettest thy breath go forth they shall be made: and thou shalt renew the face of the earth.
31 The glorious Majesty of the Lord shall endure for ever: the Lord shall rejoice in his works.
32 The earth shall tremble at the look of him: if he do but touch the hills, they shall smoke.
33 I will sing unto the Lord as long as I live: I will praise my God while I have my being.
34 And so shall my words please him: my joy shall be in the Lord.
35b Praise thou the Lord, O my soul, praise the Lord.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
SECOND LESSON: ACTS 2:1-21 [Mrs. Coreen Deane]
READER: A reading from the word of God written in the Acts of the Apostles, chapter two, beginning at the first verse.
ILLUMINATION:
READER: When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine." But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 'In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
READER: The word of the Lord.
ALL: Thanks be to God.
ANTHEM: Choir
GRADUAL HYMN: 271 - Come gracious Spirit, heavenly Dove (verses 1-3)
1 Come, gracious Spirit, heavenly Dove, with light and comfort from above; be thou our guardian, thou our guide, o'er every thought and step preside.
2 The light of truth to us display, and make us know and choose thy way; plant holy fear in every heart, that we from God may ne'er depart.
3 Lead us to Christ, the living way, nor let us from his pastures stray; lead us to holiness, the road that we must take to dwell with God.

Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I
send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

SERMON
HYMN FOR PREPARATION: 538 - O thou who camest from above
1 O thou who camest from above the fire celestial to impart, kindle a flame of sacred love on the mean altar of my heart.
2 There let it for thy glory burn with inextinguishable blaze, and trembling to its source return in humble prayer, and fervent praise.
3 Jesus, confirm my heart's desire to work, and speak, and think for thee; still let me guard the holy fire and still stir up the gift in me.
4 Still let me prove thy perfect will, my acts of faith and love repeat; till death thy endless mercies seal, and make the sacrifice complete.

THE PROFESSION OF FAITH
BISHOP: Let us join with those who are to be confirmed in the profession of our Faith.
ALL:
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
All may kneel to say or sing the “Veni Creator Spiritus”.
HYMN: 200 - Veni Creator Spiritus
1 Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, and lighten with celestial fire; thou the anointing Spirit art, who dost thy seven-fold gifts impart.
2 Thy blessed unction from above is comfort, life, and fire of love; enable with perpetual light the dullness of our blinded sight.
3 Anoint and cheer our soiled face with the abundance of thy grace: keep far our foes, give peace at home; where thou art guide no ill can come.
4
Teach us to know the Father, Son, and thee, of both, to be but one; that through the ages all along this may be our endless song,
‘Praise to thy eternal merit, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.’

PRESIDENT AND PEOPLE
Father, we offer to you these gifts which you have given us; this bread, this wine, this money. With them we offer ourselves, our lives, and our work, to become through your Holy Spirit a reasonable, holy, and lively sacrifice. As this bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ, so may we and all your people become channels of your love; through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
B (BCP Page 135)
PRESIDENT: Holy and gracious Father, all creation rightly gives you praise. All life, all holiness, comes from you through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, whom you sent to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.
We therefore bring you these gifts, and we ask you to make them holy by the power of your Spirit, that they may become the Body and Blood of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who offered Himself in obedience to your will, the Perfect Sacrifice for all mankind.
On the night he was betrayed, he took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, He broke it and gave it to his disciples and said: "Take this and eat it: "This is my Body which is given for you. "Do this for the remembrance of me."
After supper he took the cup of wine and when he had given thanks He gave it to them and said: "Drink this, all of you: "This is my Blood of the New Covenant, "Which is shed for you and for many "for the forgiveness of sins. "Do this, whenever you drink it, "For the remembrance of me."
ALL: When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, we proclaim the death of Christ until he comes again.
PRESIDENT: Father, calling to mind the death your Son endured for our salvation; His Glorious Resurrection and Ascension; His continual intercession for us in heaven; and looking for His coming again in glory, we offer you, in thanksgiving, this holy and life-giving sacrifice.
Look with favour on your Church's offering, and grant that we who eat and drink these holy gifts may be filled with your Holy Spirit and become one body in Christ, and serve you in unity, constancy and peace.
May He make us a perpetual offering to you and enable us, in communion with blessed Mary and the whole company of heaven, to share in the inheritance of your saints.
With Him, and in Him, and through Him, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father Almighty, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven in songs of everlasting praise:
ALL
Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen.

COMMUNION HYMNS: 293, 266, 270, 276
HYMN: 293 - Spirit of God, descend upon my heart
1 Spirit of God, descend upon my heart; draw it from earth; through all its pulses move; stoop to my weakness, mighty as thou art, and make me love thee as I ought to love.
2 I ask no dream, no prophet ecstasies, no sudden rending of the veil of clay, no angel visitant, no opening skies; but take the dimness of my soul away.
3 Teach me to feel that thou art always nigh; teach me the struggles of the soul to bear, to check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh; teach me the patience of unanswered prayer.
4 Teach me to love thee as thine angels love. One holy passion filling all my frame; the kindling of the heaven-descended dove, my heart an altar, and thy love the flame.
HYMN: 266 - Breathe on me, breath of God
1 Breathe on me, breath of God, fill me with life anew, that I may love what thou dost love, and do what thou wouldst do.
2 Breathe on me, breath of God, until my heart is pure, until with thee I will one will to do and to endure.
3 Breathe on me, breath of God, till l am wholly thine, until this earthly part of me glows with thy fire divine.
4 Breathe on me, breath of God, so shall I never die, but live with thee the perfect life of thine eternity.
HYMN: 270 - Come down, O Love divine
1 Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardour glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing.
2 O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming.
3 Let holy charity mine outward vesture be, and lowliness become mine inner clothing: true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o'er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing.
4 And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace, till he become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling.
HYMN: 276 - Filled with the Spirit’s power
1 Filled with the Spirit's power, with one accord the infant church confessed its risen Lord. O Holy Spirit, in the church today no less your power of fellowship display.
2 Now with the mind of Christ set us on fire, that unity may be our great desire.
Give joy and peace; give faith to hear your call, and readiness in each to work for all.
3 Widen our love, good Spirit, to embrace in your strong care the men of every race. Like wind and fire with life among us move, till we are known as Christ's, and Christians prove.
HYMNS FOR BLESSING: 278, 671, 283
HYMNS: 278 - Holy Spirit, truth divine
1 Holy Spirit, truth divine dawn upon this soul of mine; voice of God, and inward light, wake my spirit, clear my sight.
2 Holy Spirit, love divine, glow within this heart of mine; kindle every high desire; perish self in thy pure fire.
3 Holy Spirit, power divine, fill and nerve this will of mine; by thee may I strongly live, bravely bear, and nobly strive.
4 Holy Spirit, law divine, reign within this soul of mine; be my law, and I shall be firmly bound, for ever free.
5 Holy Spirit, peace divine still this restless heart of mine; speak to calm this tossing sea, stayed in thy tranquility.
6 Holy Spirit, joy divine, gladden thou this heart of mine; in the desert ways I sing, spring, O well, for ever spring.
HYMN: 671 - My God, accept my heart this day
1 My God, accept my heart this day, and make it always thine, that I from thee no more may stray, no more from thee decline.
2 Before the cross of him who died, behold, I prostrate fall; let every sin be crucified, and Christ be all in all.
3 Anoint me with thy heavenly grace, and seal me for thine own; that I may see thy glorious face, and worship near thy throne.
4 Let every thought and work and word to thee be ever given; then life shall be thy service, Lord, and death the gate of heaven.
5 All glory to the Father be, all glory to the Son, all glory, Holy Ghost, to thee, while endless ages run.
HYMN: 283 - O Holy Ghost, thy people bless
1 O Holy Ghost, thy people bless who long to feel thy might, and fain would grow in holiness as children of the light.
2 To thee we bring, who art the Lord, our selves to be thy throne; let every thought, and deed, and word thy pure dominion own.
3
Lifegiving Spirit, o'er us move, as on the formless deep; give life and order, light and love, where now is death or sleep.
4 Great gift of our ascended King, his saving truth reveal; our tongues inspire his praise to sing, our hearts his love to feel.
5 True Wind of Heav'n, from south or north, for joy or chastening, blow; the garden-spices shall spring forth if thou wilt bid them flow.
6 O Holy Ghost, of sevenfold might, all graces come from thee; grant us to know and serve aright one God in Persons Three.

1 O Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end; be thou for ever near me, my master and my friend; I shall not fear the battle if thou art by my side, nor wander from the pathway if thou wilt be my guide.
2 O let me feel thee near me: the world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear; my foes are ever near me, around me and within; but, Jesus, draw thou nearer, and shield my soul from sin.

O let me hear thee speaking in accents clear and still, above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will; O speak to re-assure me, to hasten or control; O speak, and make me listen, thou guardian of my soul.
4 O Jesus, thou hast promised to all who follow thee, that where thou art in glory there shall thy servant be; and, Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end; O give me grace to follow, my master and my friend.
5 O let me see thy footmarks, and in them plant mine own my hope to follow duly is in thy strength alone; O guide me, call me, draw me, uphold me to the end; and then in heaven receive me, my Saviour and my friend.
CLOSING PRAYER
DEACON: Go in peace and serve the Lord.
ALL: In the name of Christ. Amen.
Revised Statement on Confirmation In The Catechism (Page 412)
125: What is Confirmation?
Confirmation is the rite in which persons willingly express a mature commitment to Christ, publicly renewing the vows and promises made at their baptism and receive strength by the indwelling Holy Spirit, accompanied by prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop.
126: What is required of those to be confirmed?
It is required of those to be confirmed that they are baptized, sufficiently instructed in the Christian Faith, penitent for their sins, and are ready to publicly affirm their confession of Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord; and strengthened, by His indwelling Spirit, are determined to grow in every aspect of their lives in accordance with God’s will.
