ORDER OF SERVICE
OPENING PRAYER
INTROIT HYMN: 122 - O thou who dost to man accord
1 O thou who dost to man accord his highest prize, his best reward, thou hope of all our race; Jesu, to thee we now draw near, our earnest supplications hear, who humbly seek thy face.
2 With self-accusing voice within our conscience tells of many a sin in thought and word, and deed: O cleanse that conscience from all stain, the penitent restore again, from every burthen freed.
3 If thou reject us, who shall give our fainting spirits strength to live? 'Tis thine alone to spare; with cleansèd hearts to pray aright, and find acceptance in thy sight, be this our lowly prayer.
4 ‘Tis thou hast blessed this solemn fast; so may its days by us be passed in self-control severe, that, when our Easter morn we hail, its mystic feast we may not fail to keep with conscience clear.
5 O blessed Trinity, bestow, thy pardoning grace on us below, and shield us evermore; until, within thy courts above, we see thy face, and sing thy love, and with thy saints adore.

(BCP page 163)
PRESIDENT: Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations; and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Ash Wednesday
(BCP page 163)
PRESIDENT: Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing you have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
PRESIDENT: Kindly be seated for the ministry of the word.
FIRST LESSON: Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7 [Mrs Agnes Armstrong-Bowen]
READER: A Reading from the Word of God, written in the book of Genesis, chapter two, beginning at the fifteenth verse.
ILLUMINATION:
READER: The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.” Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God say, ‘You shall not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, nor shall you touch it, or you shall die.’“ But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not die; for God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves.
READER: The word of the Lord.
ALL: Thanks be to God.
PSALM 32
1. Blessed is he whose unrighteousness is forgiven : and whose sin is covered.
2. Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth no sin : and in whose spirit there is no guile.
3. For while I held my tongue : my bones consumed away through my daily complaining.
4. For thy hand is heavy upon me day and night : and my moisture is like the drought in summer.
5. I will acknowledge my sin unto thee : and mine unrighteousness have I not hid.
6. I said, I will confess my sins unto the Lord : and so thou forgavest the wickedness of my sin.
7. For this shall every one that is godly make his prayer unto thee, in a time when thou mayest be found : but in the great water-floods they shall not come nigh him.
8. Thou art a place to hide me in, thou shalt preserve me from trouble : thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance.
9. I will inform thee, and teach thee in the way wherein thou shalt go : and I will guide thee with mine eye.
10.Be ye not like to horse and mule, which have no understanding : whose mouths must be held with bit and bridle, lest they fall upon thee.
11.Great plagues remain for the ungodly : but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord, mercy embraceth him on every side.
12.Be glad, O ye righteous, and rejoice in the Lord : and be joyful, all ye that are true of heart.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
SECOND LESSON: Romans 5:12-19 [Mr Hamilton Cumberbatch]
READER: A reading from the word of God written in Paul’s letter to the Romans, chapter five, beginning at the twelfth verse.
ILLUMINATION:
READER: As sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, and so death spread to all because all have sinned sin was indeed in the world before the law, but sin is not reckoned when there is no law. Yet death exercised dominion from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who is a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died through the one man's trespass, much more surely have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abounded for the many. And the free gift is not like the effect of the one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brings justification. If, because of the one man's trespass, death exercised dominion through that one, much more surely will
those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness exercise dominion in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. Therefore just as one man's trespass led to condemnation for all, so one man's act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all. For just as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous.
READER: The word of the Lord.
ALL: Thanks be to God.
GRADUAL HYMN: 503 - Jesu, lover of my soul (verses 1-2)
1 Jesu, lover of my soul, let me to thy bosom fly, while the gathering waters roll, while the tempest still is high: hide me, O my Saviour, hide, till the storm of life is past; safe into the haven guide, O receive my soul at last.
2 Other refuge have I none; hangs my helpless soul on thee; leave, ah, leave me not alone, still support and comfort me. All my trust on thee is stayed, all my help from thee I bring; cover my defenceless head with the shadow of thy wing.
THE GOSPEL: Matthew 4:1-11
DEACON: The Lord be with you. ALL: And also with you.
DEACON: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew, the fourth chapter beginning at the first verse.
ALL: Glory to Christ our Saviour.
ILLUMINATION:
PRESIDENT: Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour; and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! for it is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.’” Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.
DEACON: This is the Gospel of Christ. ALL: Praise to Christ our Lord.
HYMN: 503 (verse 3)
3 Plenteous grace with thee is found, grace to cleanse from every sin; let the healing streams abound; make and keep me pure within; thou of life the fountain art; freely let me take of thee; spring thou up within my heart, rise to all eternity.
THE SERMON
PRESIDENT: Let us now stand and reaffirm our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ in the words of the Nicene Creed.
NICENE CREED [BCP page 104]
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen or unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died and was buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfilment of the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son He is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

ACT OF PENITENCE (BCP Page 123)
PRESIDENT: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins, and cleanse us from all un-righteousness.
A period of silence shall be kept.
PRESIDENT: Let us therefore confess our sins.
FORM B (BCP Page 124)
ALL: Most Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we have not loved ourselves as we ought. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen
THE ABSOLUTION (BCP Page 124)
PRESIDENT: Almighty God, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
THE GREETING OF PEACE (BCP Page 124-125)
FORM C
PRESIDENT: The Kingdom of God is justice, peace, and joy, inspired by the Holy Spirit.
ALL: They who thus serve Christ are acceptable to God and approved by others.
PRESIDENT: The peace of the Lord be always with you.
ALL: And also with you.
PRESIDENT: Let us share that peace.
SONG FOR THE GREETING OF PEACE: HYMN 453 - Make me a channel of your peace
1 Make me a channel of your peace. Where there is hatred let me bring your love; where there is injury, your pardon, Lord; and where there's doubt, true faith in you.
2 Make me a channel of your peace. Where there's despair in life let me bring hope; where there is darkness, only light; and where there's sadness, ever joy.
Refrain:
O Master grant that I may never seek so much to-be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved, as to love with all my soul.
3 Make me a channel of your peace. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, in giving of ourselves that we receive; and in dying that we're born to eternal life.
OFFERTORY HYMNS: 539, 540
HYMN: 539 - Take my life and let it be
1 Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee; take my moments and my days, let them flow in ceaseless praise.
2
Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of thy love. Take my feet, and let them be swift and beautiful for thee.
3 Take my voice, and let me sing always, only, for my King; take my lips and let them be filled with messages from thee.
4 Take my silver and my gold; not a mite would I withhold. Take my intellect, and use every power as thou shalt choose.
5 Take my will, and make it thine; it shall be no longer mine. Take my heart; it is thine own; it shall be thy royal throne.
6 Take my love; my Lord, I pour at thy feet its treasure-store; take myself, and I will be ever, only, all for thee.
HYMN: 540 - Take time to be holy
1 Take time to be holy, speak oft with thy Lord; abide in him always, and feed on his word. Make friends of God's children, help those who are weak; forgetting in nothing his blessing to seek.
2 Take time to be holy, the world rushes on; spend much time in secret with Jesus alone by looking to Jesus, like him thou shalt be! Thy friends in thy conduct his likeness shall see.
3
4
Take time to be holy, let him be thy guide; and run not before him, whatever betide; in joy or in sorrow still follow thy Lord, and, looking to Jesus, still trust in his word.
Take time to be holy, be calm in thy soul; each thought and each temper beneath his control; thus led by his Spirit to fountains of love, thou soon shalt be fitted for service above.
THE PRESENTATION OF OFFERING - FORM B (BCP Page 126)
PRESIDENT AND PEOPLE
Father, we offer to you these gifts which you have given us; this bread, this wine, this money. With them we offer ourselves, our lives, and our work, to become through your Holy Spirit a reasonable, holy, and lively sacrifice. As this bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ, so may we and all your people become channels of your love; through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYERS
SURSUM CORDA
PRESIDENT: The Lord be with you.
ALL: And also with you.
PRESIDENT: Lift up your hearts.
ALL: We lift them up to the Lord.
PRESIDENT: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
ALL: It is right to give God thanks and praise.
PRESIDENT: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Father Almighty, everlasting God:
For you bid your faithful people cleanse their hearts, and prepare with joy for the Paschal feast; that, fervent in prayer and in works of mercy, and renewed by your Word and Sacraments, they may come to the fullness of grace which you have prepared for those who love you.
Therefore, we praise you; joining our voices with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:
ALL:
Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might; heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER A (BCP Page 131)
PRESIDENT: All Holy and glorious Father, our Creator God, we give you thanks because in your loving wisdom you brought all things into being, and are truly worthy of praise from every creature you have made.
Again and again we have turned away from you; yet in every age your steadfast love has called us to return, to live in union with you: for it is your eternal purpose to put new life into all things and make them holy.
Through your Son, Jesus Christ who took our human nature upon Him you have redeemed the world from the bondage of sin: and by the power of your Holy Spirit you have gathered a people to yourself, to make known in every place His perfect offering which He made to the glory of your Name.
Hear us, therefore, Father, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; And grant that these gifts of bread and wine may be unto us His Body and Blood. For, on the night He was betrayed He took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, He broke it and gave it to his disciples and said: "Take this and eat it: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."
And after supper He took the cup of wine: and when He had given thanks, he gave it to them and said: "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."
PRESIDENT: Let us proclaim the mystery of our faith.
ALL: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
PRESIDENT: And so, Heavenly Father, rejoicing in His Holy Incarnation; His Blessed Passion and His Perfect Sacrifice made once for all upon the Cross; His Mighty Resurrection from the dead; His Glorious Ascension into heaven; and looking for His Coming in glory; we offer to you this Bread and this Cup.
We pray that you will accept this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and grant that all who eat and drink of the Body and Blood of your Son, our great High Priest, may be renewed by your Holy Spirit, and be one Body, one Spirit, in Him.
Let faith and love increase in us. Unite us with all Bishops, all other ministers of your Word and Sacraments, and with the whole people of God, living and departed, whom you have made for yourself.
Confirm us in holiness, that we may be found ready to join the company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Holy Apostles, Lucy and all your saints, when our Lord Jesus Christ comes again: Forever giving you thanks and praise through Him from whom all good things do come.
With Him and in Him and through Him, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father Almighty, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, in songs of everlasting praise:
ALL: Blessing and honour and glory and power Be yours for ever and ever. Amen
THE LORD’S PRAYER (BCP Page 144)
PRESIDENT: As our Saviour has taught us, so we pray:
ALL: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.
THE BREAKING OF BREAD (BCP Page 145)
PRESIDENT: We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
ALL: Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
THE AGNUS DEI (BCP Page 147)
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: grant us peace.
The INVITATION (BCP Page 146)
DEACON: The Gifts of God for the People of God.
ALL: Our souls will feast and be satisfied, and we will sing glad songs of praise to Him.
THE COMMUNION
HYMNS FOR THE COMMUNION: 475, 525, 491
HYMN: 475 - Sometimes a light surprises
1 Sometimes a light surprises the Christian while he sings: it is the Lord who rises with healing in his wings; when comforts are declining, he grants the soul again a season of clear shining to cheer it after rain.
2 In holy contemplation we sweetly then pursue the theme of God's salvation, and find it ever new: set free from present sorrow, we cheerfully can say, ‘E'en let the unknown morrow bring with it what it may.’
3 ‘It can bring with it nothing but he will bear us through; who gives the lilies clothing will clothe his people too: beneath the spreading heavens no creature but is fed; and he who feeds the ravens will give his children bread.'
4 Though vine nor fig tree neither their wonted fruit should bear, though all the fields should wither, nor flocks nor herds be there; yet, God the same abiding, his praise shall tune my voice; for, while in him confiding, I cannot but rejoice.
HYMN: 525 - I am weak but thou art strong
1 I am weak, but thou art strong; Jesus, keep me from all wrong; I'll be satisfied as long as I walk, let me walk close to thee.
Refrain:
Just a closer walk with thee, grant it, Jesus, is my plea, daily walking close to thee, let it be, dear Lord, let it be.
2
Through this world of toil and snares, if I falter, Lord, who cares? Who with me my burden shares? None but thee, dear Lord, none but thee.
Refrain:
3 When my feeble life is o'er, time for me will be no more; guide me gently, safely o'er to thy kingdom shore, to thy shore.
Refrain:
HYMN: 491 - What a friend we have in Jesus
1 What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bearall because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.
2 Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer! Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weaknesstake it to the Lord in prayer.
3 Are we weak and heavy-laden, cumbered with a load of care? Precious Saviour, still our refuge! Take it to the Lord in prayer!
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer! In His arms He’ll take and shield thee; thou wilt find a solace there.
HYMNS FOR THE BLESSING: HYMNS 406, 567
HYMN 406 - Be thou my guardian and my guide
1 Be thou my guardian and my guide, and hear me when I call; let not my slippery footsteps slide, and hold me lest I fall.
2 The world, the flesh, and Satan dwell around the path I tread; O save me from the snares of hell, thou quickener of the dead.
3 And if I tempted am to sin, and outward things are strong, do thou, O Lord, keep watch within, and save my soul from wrong.
4 Still let me ever watch and pray, and feel that I am frail; that if the tempter cross my way, yet he may not prevail.
HYMN: 567 - Yield not to temptation
1 Yield not to temptation, for yielding is sin, each victory will help you, some other to win fight, still pressing onward, dark passions subdue Look ever to Jesus, He’ll carry you through.
Refrain:
Ask the Saviour to help you; comfort, strengthen and keep you; he is willing to aid you, he will carry you through.
2 Shun evil companions, bad language disdain, God's name hold in reverence, nor take it in vain be thoughtful and earnest, kind-hearted and true Look ever to Jesus, he’ll carry you through.
Refrain
3 To him that o'er-cometh, God giveth a crown, Through faith we will conquer, though often cast down he who is our Saviour, our strength will renew Look ever to Jesus, he’ll carry you through.
Refrain

NOTICES & HIGHLIGHTS
RECESSIONAL HYMN: 112 - Christian, dost thou see them
1 Christian, dost thou see them on the holy ground, how the troops of Midian prowl and prowl around?
Christian, up and smite them, counting gain but loss; smite them by the merit of the holy cross.
2 Christian, dost thou feel them, how they work within, striving, tempting, luring, goading into sin?
Christian, never tremble; never be down-cast; smite them by the virtue of the Lenten fast.
3 Christian, dost thou hear them, how they speak thee fair?
"Always fast and vigil? Always watch and prayer?"
Christian, answer boldly, "While I breathe I pray:" peace shall follow battle, night shall end in day.
4 ‘Well I know thy trouble, O my servant true; thou art very weary, I was weary too; but that toil shall make thee some day all mine own, and the end of sorrow shall be near my throne.’
CLOSING PRAYERS
DEACON: Go in peace and serve the Lord.
ALL: In the name of Christ. Amen.
