OPENING PRAYER

INTROIT HYMN: 110 - All ye who seek for sure relief

1 All ye who seek for sure relief in trouble and distress, whatever sorrow vex the mind, or guilt the soul oppress.

2 Jesus, who gave himself for you upon the cross to die, opens to you his sacred heart; O to that heart draw nigh.

3 Ye hear how kindly he invites; ye hear his words so blest: "All ye that labour come to me, and I will give you rest."

4 O Jesus, joy of saints on high, thou hope of sinners here, attracted by those loving words to thee we lift our prayer.

5 Wash thou our wounds in that dear blood which from thy heart doth flow; a new and contrite heart on all who cry to thee bestow.

SALUTATION

PRESIDENT: Good morning, brothers and sisters in Christ. A warm welcome to our Eucharistic worship.

Today is the Second Sunday in Lent and our collects can be found on page 163.

The Eucharist continues on page 98.

OPENING SENTENCE:

PRESIDENT: Be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:1,2

VERSICLE & RESPONSE (BCP Page 101)

PRESIDENT: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

ALL: And blessed be His Kingdom, now and forever. Amen.

ALL: Blessed Lord and Father, we have assembled in your name and in fellowship with one another. Enable us by your grace to offer the sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; to proclaim and respond to your holy word. Teach us to pray for your world and your Church. Grant that we, confessing our sins, may worthily offer to you our souls and bodies as a living sacrifice and eat and drink of your spiritual food in this Holy Sacrament. Amen.

COLLECT FOR PURITY (BCP Page 101)

ALL: Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your Holy Name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE KYRIE (BCP Page 102)

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

COLLECTS

PRESIDENT: The Lord be with you

ALL: And also with you.

PRESIDENT: Let us pray.

Second Sunday in Lent (BCP page 163)

PRESIDENT: O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Ash Wednesday (BCP page 163)

PRESIDENT: Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing you have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

PRESIDENT: Kindly be seated for the ministry of the word.

FIRST LESSON: Genesis 12:1-4a [Mrs. Marcia Best]

READER: A Reading from the Word of God, written in the book of Genesis, chapter 12, beginning at the first verse.

ILLUMINATION:

READER: The Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him.

READER: The word of the Lord.

ALL: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 121

1. I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills : from whence cometh my help.

2. My help cometh even from the Lord : who hath made heaven and earth.

3. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved : and he that keepeth thee will not sleep.

4. Behold, he that keepeth Israel : shall neither slumber nor sleep.

5. The Lord himself is thy keeper : the Lord is thy defence upon thy right hand;

6. So that the sun shall not burn thee by day : neither the moon by night.

7. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil : yea, it is even he that shall keep thy soul.

8. The Lord shall preserve thy going out, and thy coming in : from this time forth for evermore.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

SECOND LESSON: Romans 4:1-5 & 13-17 [Mrs. Lisa Griffith]

READER: A reading from the word of God written in Paul’s letter to the Romans, chapter four beginning at the first verse.

ILLUMINATION:

READER: What then are we to say was gained by Abraham, our ancestor according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.” Now to one who works, wages are not reckoned as a gift but as something due. But to one who without works trusts him who justifies the ungodly, such faith is reckoned as righteousness. For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. For

this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”) —in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.

READER: The word of the Lord.

ALL: Thanks be to God.

GRADUAL HYMN: 533 - O for a closer walk with God (verses 1-4)

1 O for a closer walk with God, a calm and heavenly frame; a light to shine upon the road that leads me to the Lamb!

2 What peaceful hours I once enjoyed! How sweet their memory still! But they have left an aching void the world can never fill.

3 Return, O holy Dove, return, sweet messenger of rest: I hate the sins that made thee mourn, and drove thee from my breast.

4 The dearest idol I have known, whate'er that idol be, help me to tear it from thy throne, and worship only thee.

THE GOSPEL: John 3:1-17

DEACON: The Lord be with you.

ALL: And also with you.

DEACON: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John, the third chapter beginning at the first verse.

ALL: Glory to Christ our Saviour.

ILLUMINATION:

PRESIDENT: There was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God.” Jesus answered him, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, ‘You must be born from above.’ The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” Jesus answered him, “Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? “Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. “Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”

DEACON: This is the Gospel of Christ.

ALL: Praise to Christ our Lord.

HYMN: 533 (verse 5)

5 So shall my walk be close with God, calm and serene my frame; so purer light shall mark the road that leads me to the Lamb.

THE SERMON

PRESIDENT: Let us now stand and reaffirm our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ in the words of the Nicene Creed.

NICENE CREED [BCP page 104]

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen or unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died and was buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfilment of the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father.

With the Father and the Son He is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Bless the work of the Mother’s Union as we seek to share your love through the encouragement, strengthening and support of marriage and family life. Empowered by your Spirit, may we be united in prayer and worship, and in love and service, reach out as your hands across the world. In Jesus’ name. Amen

O Lord our God, accept the fervent prayers of your people in the multitude of your mercies. Look with compassion on us and all who turn to you for help; for you are gracious O Lord of love, and to you we give glory, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

ACT OF PENITENCE (BCP Page 123)

PRESIDENT: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins, and cleanse us from all un-righteousness.

A period of silence shall be kept.

PRESIDENT: Let us therefore confess our sins.

FORM B (BCP Page 124)

ALL: Most Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we have not loved ourselves as we ought. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen

THE ABSOLUTION (BCP Page 124)

PRESIDENT: Almighty God, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

THE GREETING OF PEACE (BCP Page 124-125)

FORM C

PRESIDENT: The Kingdom of God is justice, peace, and joy, inspired by the Holy Spirit.

ALL: They who thus serve Christ are acceptable to God and approved by others.

PRESIDENT: The peace of the Lord be always with you.

ALL: And also with you.

PRESIDENT: Let us share that peace.

SONG FOR THE GREETING OF PEACE: There’s a sweet sweet Spirit in this place

There’s a sweet, sweet Spirit in this place, and I know that it’s the Spirit of the Lord. There are sweet expressions on each face, and I know they feel the presence of the Lord.

Refrain:

Sweet Holy Spirit, Sweet Heavenly Dove, Stay right here with us, filling us with your love, And for these blessings, we lift our hearts in praise, without a doubt we’ll know that we have been revived when we shall leave this place.

There are blessings you cannot receive till you know him in his fullness, and believe. You’re the one to profit when you say, ‘I am going to walk with Jesus all the way. ’

OFFERTORY HYMNS: 509, 431

HYMN: 509 - Take up thy cross, the Saviour said

1 Take up thy cross, the Saviour said, if thou wouldst my disciple be; deny thyself, the world forsake, and humbly follow after me.

2 Take up thy cross! Let not its weight fill thy weak spirit with alarm: his strength shall bear thy spirit up, and brace thy heart, and nerve thine arm

3

Take up thy cross, nor heed the shame, nor let thy foolish pride rebel: thy Lord for thee the cross endured, to save thy soul from death and hell.

4 Take up thy cross then in his strength, and calmly every danger brave; ‘twill guide thee to a better home, and lead to victory o'er the grave.

5 Take up thy cross, and follow Christ, nor think till death to lay it down; for only he who bears the cross may hope to wear the glorious crown.

6 To thee, great Lord, the One in Three, all praise for evermore ascend: O grant us in our home to see the heavenly life that knows no end.

HYMN: 431 - Fight the good fight with all thy might

1 Fight the good fight with all thy might! Christ is thy strength, and Christ thy right; lay hold on life, and it shall be thy joy and crown eternally.

2 Run the straight race through God's good grace, lift up thine eyes, and seek his face; life with its way before us lies; Christ is the path, and Christ the prize.

3 Cast care aside, lean on thy guide; his boundless mercy will provide; trust, and thy trusting soul shall prove Christ is its life, and Christ its love.

4

Faint not nor fear, his arms are near; he changeth not, and thou art dear; only believe, and thou shalt see that Christ is all in all to thee.

THE PRESENTATION OF OFFERING - FORM B

(BCP Page 126)

PRESIDENT AND PEOPLE

Father, we offer to you these gifts which you have given us; this bread, this wine, this money. With them we offer ourselves, our lives, and our work, to become through your Holy Spirit a reasonable, holy, and lively sacrifice. As this bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ, so may we and all your people become channels of your love; through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYERS

SURSUM

CORDA

PRESIDENT: The Lord be with you.

ALL: And also with you.

PRESIDENT: Lift up your hearts.

ALL: We lift them up to the Lord.

PRESIDENT: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

ALL: It is right to give God thanks and praise.

PRESIDENT: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Father Almighty, everlasting God:

For you bid your faithful people cleanse their hearts, and prepare with joy for the Paschal feast; that, fervent in prayer and in works of mercy, and renewed by your Word and Sacraments, they may come to the fullness of grace which you have prepared for those who love you.

Therefore, we praise you; joining our voices with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

ALL:

Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might; heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER B (BCP Page 135)

PRESIDENT: Holy and gracious Father, all creation rightly gives you praise. All life, all holiness, comes from you through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, whom you sent to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

We therefore bring you these gifts, and we ask you to make them holy by the power of your Spirit, that they may become the Body and Blood of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who offered Himself in obedience to your will, the Perfect Sacrifice for all mankind.

On the night he was betrayed, he took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, He broke it and gave it to his disciples and said: "Take this and eat it: "This is my Body which is given for you. "Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper he took the cup of wine and when he had given thanks He gave it to them and said: "Drink this, all of you: "This is my Blood of the New Covenant, "Which is shed for you and for many "for the forgiveness of sins. "Do this, whenever you drink it, "For the remembrance of me."

ALL: When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, we proclaim the death of Christ until he comes again.

PRESIDENT: Father, calling to mind the death your Son endured for our salvation; His Glorious Resurrection and Ascension; His continual intercession for us in heaven; and looking for His coming again in glory, we offer you, in thanksgiving, this holy and life-giving sacrifice.

Look with favour on your Church's offering, and grant that we who eat and drink these holy gifts may be filled with your Holy Spirit and become one body in Christ, and serve you in unity, constancy and peace.

May He make us a perpetual offering to you and enable us, in communion with blessed Mary and the whole company of heaven, to share in the inheritance of your saints.

With Him, and in Him, and through Him, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father Almighty, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven in songs of everlasting praise:

ALL Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER (BCP Page 144)

PRESIDENT: As our Saviour has taught us, so we pray:

ALL: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF BREAD (BCP Page 145)

PRESIDENT: We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

ALL: Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

THE AGNUS DEI (BCP Page 147)

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: grant us peace.

The INVITATION (BCP Page 146)

DEACON: The Gifts of God for the People of God.

ALL: Our souls will feast and be satisfied, and we will sing glad songs of praise to Him.

THE COMMUNION

HYMNS FOR THE COMMUNION: 441, 552, 619

HYMN: 441 - As pants the hart for cooling streams

1 As pants the hart for cooling streams when heated in the chase, so longs my soul, O God, for thee, and thy refreshing grace.

2 For thee, my God, the living God, my thirsty soul doth pine: O when shall I behold thy face, thou majesty divine?

3 Why restless, why cast down, my soul? Hope still, and thou shalt sing the praise of him who is thy God, thy health's eternal spring.

4 To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, the God whom we adore, be glory, as it was, is now, and shall be evermore.

HYMN: 552 - I need thee every hour

1 I need thee every hour, most gracious Lord; no tender voice like thine can peace afford.

Refrain:

I need thee, O I need thee! Every hour I need thee; O bless me now, my Saviour! I come to thee.

2 I need thee every hour; stay thou near by; temptations lose their power when thou art nigh.

Refrain

3 I need thee every hour, in joy or pain; come quickly and abide, or life is vain.

Refrain

4 I need thee every hour, Teach me thy will; and thy rich promises in me fulfil.

Refrain

5 I need thee every hour, most Holy One; O make me thine indeed, thou blessèd Son.

Refrain

HYMN: 619 - Soul of my Saviour, sanctify my breast

1 Soul of my Saviour, sanctify my breast, body of Christ, be thou my saving guest, blood of my Saviour, bathe me in thy tide, wash me with water flowing from thy side.

2

Strength and protection may thy passion be, O blessed Jesu, hear and answer me; deep in thy wounds, Lord, hide and shelter me, so shall I never, never part from thee.

3 Guard and defend me from the foe malign, in death's dread moments make me only thine; call me and bid me come to thee on high where I may praise thee with thy saints for ay.

HYMNS FOR THE BLESSING: HYMNS 645, 651

HYMN 645 - Do no sinful action

1 Do no sinful action, speak no angry word: ye belong to Jesus, children of the Lord.

2 Christ is kind and gentle, Christ is pure and true; and his little children must be holy too.

3 There's a wicked spirit watching round you still, and he tries to tempt you to all harm and ill.

4 But ye must not hear him, though ‘tis hard for you to resist the evil, and the good to do.

5 For ye promised truly, in your infant days, to renounce him wholly, and forsake his ways.

6

Ye are new-born Christians, ye must learn to fight with the bad within you, and to do the right.

7 Christ is your own Master; he is good and true, and his little children must be holy too.

HYMN: 651 - It is a thing most wonderful

1 It is a thing most wonderful, almost too wonderful to be, that God's own Son should come from heaven, and die to save a child like me.

2 And yet I know that it is true; he chose a poor and humble lot, and wept and toiled and mourned and died for love of those who loved him not.

3 I cannot tell how he could love a child so weak and full of sin; his love must be most wonderful, if he could die my love to win.

4 I sometimes think about the cross, and shut my eyes, and try to see the cruel nails and crown of thorns and Jesus crucified for me.

5 But even could I see him die, I could but see a little part of that great love which, like a fire, is always burning in his heart.

6 It is most wonderful to know his love for me so free and sure; but ‘tis more wonderful to see my love for him so faint and poor.

7 And yet I want to love thee, Lord! O light the flame within my heart, and I will love thee more and more, until I see thee as thou art

THE DISMISSAL

POST COMMUNION PRAYER (BCP Page 148)

ALL: Eternal God and Heavenly Father, we thank you for feeding us with the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you, and all persons in you, with gladness and singleness of heart, through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

BLESSING:

PRESIDENT: Christ give you grace to grow in holiness, to deny yourselves, take up your cross, and follow him; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be among you and remain with you always.

ALL: Amen.

PRESIDENT: Kindly be seated for the Notices

NOTICES & HIGHLIGHTS

Refrain:

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord!

Let the earth hear his voice; praise the Lord, praise the Lord!

Let the people rejoice: O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son and give him the glory; great things he hath done!

2 O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood! To every believer the promise of God; the vilest offender who truly believes, that moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

3

Great things he hath taught us, great things he hath done, and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son; but purer and higher and greater will be our wonder, our rapture when Jesus we see.
