Doo Good

Protect our lakes and streams by picking up your dog’s doo! Did you know dog doo can pollute stormwater and our local water bodies? Bacteria from pet waste that is left in yards, trails or other locations may be washed into storm drains by rain or melting snow; which leads directly to our local lakes and streams. The bacteria in dog doo accounts for a large percentage of the bacteria found in waterways and negatively impacts water quality. Dog doo also is a significant source of nitrogen and phosphorus, which act like fertilizer and promote algae growth. How to be a “Doo Gooder” • Be prepared with bags and take extras • Place waste in the garbage • Pick it up regularly at home or hire someone to do it

Pollinate the Park: native plant sale

The 2024 native plant sale is back and will start June 17! Help our pollinators by creating a native plant garden in your yard or add to your existing pollinator-friendly landscape. Flats of plants offered are specifically designed for St. Louis Park and for a variety of environments. Discounts will be available for St. Louis Park residents. Ordering will start June 17. Plant pickup will be Aug. 17 from 8 – 11 a.m. and Aug. 19 from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Municipal Service Center, 7305 Oxford St. Visit www.stlouisparkmn.gov/pollinate-the-park for more information.

Learn more about the city’s organics collection program! The workshop will include a tour of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community compost site. Transportation will be provided by the city. Visit www.stlouisparkmn.gov/garbage-recycling for more information and to register. Registration will be limited to 20 people due to space constraints at the compost site.

Rainwater Rewards program

It’s not too early to start thinking about spring landscaping projects that can help manage stormwater. The city’s Rainwater Rewards program offers funding and technical guidance to residential property owners who install projects that do at least one of the following: • Protect and restore stormwater by capturing pollutants in rainwater runoff • Increase the watershed’s ability to store water • Preserve and restore native plant and wildlife communities • Protect and preserve groundwater quality and quantity Program benefits include cost share, guidance with management practices, selecting designers and contractors, and future planning. Project examples: • Rain gardens • Rain barrels • Permeable pavement • Green roofs • Other innovative stormwater management practices The program is available to residential properties in St. Louis Park. Applications are accepted year-round on a first-come, first-serve basis. To learn more, visit www.stlouisparkmn.gov/rainwater-rewards, or contact Erick Francis, water resources manager, at efrancis@stlouisparkmn.gov or 952.924.2690.

See page 7 for Beautify the Park events!

Do your part: adopt a storm drain!

St. Louis Park residents are invited to adopt a storm drain by committing to keep it clear of leaves, trash and other debris. The simple act of sweeping and cleaning up around a storm drain protects creeks, wetlands and lakes by preventing pollution from entering our shared waterways. Visit www.adopt-a-drain.org/map to sign up.

Backing Up Your Computer Before It's Too Late

ADULTS Online We all know we're supposed to back up our data. It's essential for peace of mind, but one copy of a file on your computer does not make a backup. People produce hundreds and sometimes thousands of files every year but fail to take adequate steps to preserve their data. Computers get infected and accidents happen, but even after losing an important document, irreplaceable photo or entire sets of financial records, some still don't take the time. Backing up takes some effort, but thanks to new software, hardware and services, it's easier than ever. In this class, we look at the types of backups available, as well as the tools you'll need to pull it off with as little work as possible. Instructor: Sara A. Reimann
