Come to the park for a variety of fun kid’s entertainment!

ROC events Lions Club Egg Hunt Saturday, April 11 AGES 3 – 8 ROC, 3700 Monterey Drive Participants will hunt for candy and special eggs in separate age categories. Each participant will receive a bag to collect their goodies. Bring your camera for a picture with the Park Bunny! Prizes will be awarded for the coloring contest for ages 8 and under. The City of St. Louis Park recognizes the importance of recreation and the health and wellness benefits it provides to people of all ages. The city offers a program for those that live or work in St. Louis Park that may need financial assistance to participate in our recreation programs.

How it works • A family member can receive a maximum of $200 in fee assistance per calendar year (January – December) and must pay the first 50 percent of the activity/program fee.

Beautify the Park 2020 Interested in helping Beautify the Park? We have a variety of events this spring and everyone can participate!

The Beautify the Park campaign aims to spruce-up the city by picking up debris and other remnants that have accumulated over the winter.

This year, the campaign kicks off with our Earth Day kick-off of "Pick up the Park" and an Arbor Day tree planting and observation of the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day held later in the week.

Westwood Hills Nature Center, 8300 W. Franklin Ave. Join the City of St. Louis Park in celebrating Arbor Day and observing the 50th anniversary of Earth Day! Learn about the impacts of climate change and the actions you can take to help our community reach its climate neutrality goal. Volunteer to plant one of 150 diverse trees with our local partner, Great River Greening, or pick up litter throughout the Westwood Hills Nature Center. (all supplies and equipment will be provided). Take a tour of the dance and sing to earth-inspired music by Kidpower with Rachael beginning at 9:45 a.m. Refreshments will be provided. The event is free, but registration is required. * Due to construction of the new interpretive center, the main parking lot will be closed and parking won’t be available on-site. All attendees are asked to park at St. Louis Park Middle School and ride a free shuttle to and from the event, which will take place near gates 7 and 8.

Ice skating lessons

The Rec Center, 3700 Monterey Drive St. Louis Park Skate School offers a hybrid skating program to meet the needs of all of our skaters that incorporates the Learn to Skate USA and Ice Skating Institute (ISI) weSKATE program curriculum. Each class presents a progression of specific skills that build upon one another. Contact the skating director at skate@stlouispark.org with questions.

What level do you register for?

If you are not sure what level to register your child for, register them as follows:

• S katers who are 6 years old and younger, who have little or no skating experience, sign up for Beginner Snowplow.

• S katers who are 7 years old and older, who have little or no skating experience, sign up for Basic 1/Pre-Alpha. Class does move a little faster than Beginner Snowplow classes.

• S katers may be moved during the first few weeks of class to a level that is appropriate or more comfortable for them.

Session registration deadlines and class exceptions

In order to staff and add classes as needed, deadline to register for classes is two weeks before the start of the next session. Add your name to the waitlist if a class is full. Additional classes may be added. Skaters registered for the prior session will be given priority.

Special notes • Fee includes skate rental, ISI weSKATE membership, practice ice (if available) and three free open skate passes.

• Practice ice (if available) on the day of class is open to registered skaters and the parents of Snowplow class participants only. No practice ice available on Sunday sessions.

• Protective headgear is required for all Snowplow skaters. Bicycle or lightweight hockey helmets are acceptable.

• No shoes or boots on the ice.

• S katers should wear warm, comfortable clothing, including gloves or mittens.

• F irst-time skaters and those using rental skates should arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of class to be on time.

• S tudents may remain in the same level for a few sessions before mastering the skills needed to move up to the next level. Skaters that desire to progress more quickly are encouraged to register for two classes a week.

Off-Ice Harness Training

AGES 5+ The Rec Center, 3700 Monterey Drive Provides skaters the opportunity to practice and improve their air rotation position and eliminates the focus of the on-ice setup and potential falls. Training is offered to skaters of all abilities to work on their technique in a safe environment.

Skaters should wear athletic/skating attire and athletic footwear or skates.

Lessons are held in 10-minute increments.

On-ice training focuses on power, edges, jumps, spins and artistry. Participants should bring their own skates, but rentals will be available if needed. Recommended for skaters in Basic 1/Pre-Alpha through Freestyle 7. Participants need to provide their own snacks and lunch.

3700 Monterey Drive Our Aquatic Park is the hottest place to stay cool this summer! Wade into the pool from our zero depth entry or splash into the water from the four-story water slides. Life Under a Log ALL AGES Westwood Hills Nature Center, 8300 W. Franklin Ave. Explore the mysterious world of life under a log. Search for the strange creatures of this dark, damp and decayed habitat.

Centipedes, spider mites and slime molds are just some of the unusual creatures we might find. We’ll also meet a tiger salamander and spend some time working on a rotten craft.

Birthday

AGES 4+ Westwood Hills Nature Center is the perfect venue for any child’s birthday party. Birthday parties include a one-hour program led by one of our naturalists and another hour for gifts and food in a private party room for up to 12 children ($8 extra fee for each additional child). Children will meet a live animal, hike outdoors and then celebrate in the party room. You bring the treats, paperware and presents.

Interpretive center project update We are excited to say that the walls are up and the new interpretive center at Westwood Hills Nature Center is taking shape! The interior finishes are being applied and the interpretive exhibits are being installed. The new interpretive center will be open for all to visit and explore in summer 2020. Reach is an agency that serves individuals with developmental disabilities and their families in western Hennepin County and eastern Carver County. Services include adaptive recreation, independent living support, case management and counseling. Fire hydrant painting

More than 1,500 St. Louis Park fire hydrants are in need of your help! This opportunity can be for individuals or groups, painting one or more hydrants in your neighborhood. Training and materials are provided.

Pick up the Park

Help beautify St. Louis Park by picking up litter and debris from a local park or street! This is a great activity for individuals and groups of all ages and can be done on your own time. The city provides gloves and bags.

Health in the Park Champions

Become an advocate for community health and well-being in St. Louis Park! Health in the Park Champions work on initiatives revolving around healthy eating, active living and mental health topics to improve the well-being of residents in St. Louis Park.

Parktacular

Volunteer at the city’s annual Parktacular celebration! Volunteers are needed June 15 – 16 in several areas, including the fishing clinic, parade, information booth and Kidtacular. All volunteers receive a free T-shirt and meal voucher. Visit www.parktacular.org to sign up and for more information!

School opportunities St. Louis Park Schools utilize volunteers to assist students throughout the district from early learning and preschool programs to high school and adult basic education students.

Volunteers help in many areas such as reading, math, shelving books in the media centers or other activities to support teachers and classrooms. If you have just one hour per week during the school day, we can use your help and will work with you to find a placement that fits your interest and time.

Garden adoption

Help plant and maintain one of our city flower gardens this spring. Flowers are provided, and you can plant on your own time. Volunteers maintain the flower gardens throughout the summer.

Adopt a Spot

Help keep St. Louis Park beautiful by adopting a spot to care for! Your “spot” can be a park, garden, playground, trail, road or any public space in the city. Once adopted, monitor your “spot” to ensure it is well cared for, litter free and report any repairs to the city.
