Birthday parties AGES 4+ The new interpretive center at Westwood Hills Nature Center is the perfect venue for any birthday party. Birthday parties include a one-hour program led by one of our naturalists and another hour for gifts and food in a private party room. The cost includes the two-hour room rental. Party guests will meet a live animal, hike outdoors and then celebrate in the party room. You bring the treats, tableware and presents.

Bike Scream Ride

Grab your bike and ride along city trails toward an excellent ice cream shop destination, Lick’s Unlimited in Excelsior.

Participants must stay with the group leaders, be able to complete the round-trip distance (approximately 12 miles) at a casual pace and provide a properly working bike, helmet and water. Meet at the Minnetonka Community Center; trip includes the cost of ice cream.

Youth Basketball League

What level do you register for?

If you are not sure what level to register your child for, register them as follows:

• S katers who are 6 years old and younger, who have little or no skating experience, sign up for Beginner Tot and Me class. An adult (age 16+) must also participate and be able to skate and assist child as needed. Skates required, no shoes or boots.

• S katers who are 7 years old and older, who have little or no skating experience, sign up for Basic 1/PreAlpha.

Special Skater

AGES 5+ The special skater program consists of a modified learn-to-skate curriculum and test standards and opens the door to the wonderful world of ice skating for individuals of all ages and abilities. Off-Ice Harness Training

AGES 5+ This private lesson training provides skaters the opportunity to practice and improve their air rotation position and eliminates the focus of the on-ice set up and potential falls. Training is offered to skaters of all abilities to work on their technique in a safe environment. Skaters should wear athletic/skating attire and athletic footwear or skates.

Developmental open ice skating AGES 5+

Developmental ice is available for figure skaters to practice their skating skills with or without a private lesson. During developmental ice there are no hockey pucks, hockey sticks or games allowed. Sessions are available in onehour blocks, maximum of one session per day.

Pruning your trees: timing is everything The best time to prune your trees, especially elms and oaks, is during the dormant season – November through March. DO NOT prune elms or oaks April through September. During these months, the fungus of Dutch elm disease and oak wilt disease are persistent and present within the atmosphere, potentially infecting any tree with an open wound (branch pruning location) through wind dissemination or insect transport. The city license ensures that the company has liability and workers compensation insurance to eliminate the property owner’s responsibility or liability of injury on or damage to your property from a misguided tree service. Fall is a great time to plant a tree in your yard or a perennial in your garden. Not only is it a perfect time for planting due to the cool, wet weather, but also at this time of year many nurseries will want to reduce their plant inventory so they will reduce prices on many items. Native trees and plants are still abundant and available from most nurseries in the fall.

• Bring your own container, shovel and proof of residency

When purchasing plants for your yard, think about where the plant comes from, meaning where was the seed source from?

The closer the seed source or where the plant was grown to St. Louis Park, the more likely it will survive in your yard. Often, plants purchased through nationwide retailers will be grown in milder climates and will not be hardy enough to survive our frigid winters, so buy local when it comes to plants.

City opportunities Westwood Hills Nature Center Halloween Party Volunteers are needed to staff the many roles that support the Westwood Hills Nature Center Halloween Party. Event volunteers are needed to dress in costume and run games on the evenings of Friday, Oct. 16 and Saturday, Oct. 17, and many more are needed for setup and tear down.

Hydrant Hero St. Louis Park has about 1,700 fire hydrants. While we have firefighters to remove snow around the hydrants after a snowfall, they can't always clean them all in a timely manner. This is where you can help. Volunteer to become a Hydrant Hero and keep the hydrants around your homes and businesses clear of snow in the winter and free of plant overgrowth in the summer.

Two different sets of cards are available, one for the Minneapolis/west metro area and the other for Anoka/northwest. As we do our part to “Stay Safe Minnesota," the Lenox Community Center staff has created an opportunity to meet a need in our community. Friends of the Arts is a nonprofit community organization that has been building the community through the arts since 1995, with a mission to support, promote and enhance the arts in St. Louis Park to bring people together. Friends of the Arts connects people and organizations around the arts, shares arts-related information and resources, supports local artists and coordinates community arts programs.

Friends of the Arts organizes, supports and promotes high-quality arts and culture events and creative activities in St. Louis Park.

Events range from interactive art-making sessions, to educational artist talks, concerts and theater productions with a focus on themes and topics relevant to St. Louis Park and featuring artists connected to our community. Public art in St. Louis Park

St. Louis Park has an abundance of public artworks throughout the city that help create a unique sense of place and local identity.

Recent additions to the city include a large mural that explores our past, present and future in Historic Walker Lake, multiple nature-inspired installations in the new interpretive center at Westwood Hills Nature Center and an abstract sculpture at the new Bridgewater Bank headquarters on Excelsior Boulevard. Artist opportunities

If you are an artist, maker or creative who lives, works or has a meaningful connection to St. Louis Park, Friends of the Arts has opportunities for you. Opportunities include public art commissions, teaching opportunities, photo contests, calls for artwork for exhibits and art fairs, and more. Funding is available to St. Louis Park residents with financial need to participate in arts and creative activities like music lessons, art class registration fees and necessary art materials. This program is rooted in the belief that creativity is inherent in all people, and that the arts should be affordable and accessible. The Gift of Music program, in partnership with the St. Louis Park Community Band, provides musical instruments to students in St. Louis Park schools to participate in band or orchestra. We collect donated instruments, clean and repair them, and place them into the hands of students in need. To date, more than 750 students have received their very own instrument through this program. Arts & Culture Grants

Each year, grants are awarded to individuals or organizations for arts and culture projects that support community pride, connect artists and the community, and engage people in creative learning. Artists, arts organizations, students, community and neighborhood groups, and cultural and religious organizations are encouraged to apply. Fiscal sponsorship

Friends of the Arts provides fiscal sponsorship and support for informal and unincorporated arts groups and projects so they can receive grants and tax-deductible donations, and focus their time and energy on the art. Friends of the Arts is currently the fiscal sponsor of the Community Band, Maggie’s Farm Theater, St. Louis Park Art Fair, Community Storytelling Forum and Historic Walker Lake Placemaking Committee.

Adaptive Recreation

Reach for Resources

The adaptive recreation program is a cooperative effort of Reach for Resources and the cities of Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Chanhassen, Golden Valley, Maple Grove, Plymouth and St. Louis Park. Reach is an agency that serves individuals with developmental disabilities and their families in western Hennepin County and eastern Carver County. Services include adaptive recreation, independent living support, case management and counseling.

NOTE: People not living in one of the above cities are considered “non-residents” and should add $8 to select registration fees.

Inclusion support

Reach for Resources provides inclusion support to children and adults with disabilities who would like to participate in their city park and recreation programs.

Registration for these programs is done through your parks and recreation division.

Inclusion support through Reach is offered in the cities of Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Chanhassen, Chaska, Crystal, Golden Valley, New Hope and St. Louis Park. After registering, contact Reach for Resources to discuss the needs/accommodations for yourself or your child. Allow a minimum of two weeks’ notice for a successful inclusion.

Virtual Fantasy Football Draft

AGES 13+ Virtual Want to try out fantasy football? Join us for this online virtual draft we’ll be using through ESPN. You have the option of video conferencing with us as we go through the draft together, or just follow the draft on your computer, tablet or phone and make choices when it is your turn. Join the City of St. Louis Park for a ribbon-cutting Sunday, Sept. 13, at 2:30 p.m. to commemorate the opening of the new interpretive center building at Westwood Hills Nature Center. After the ribbon-cutting, enjoy a walk around the nature center trails and explore the outdoor areas.

The interpretive center will be open for self-guided tours. Visitors are required to wear face coverings inside the interpretive center and maintain physical distancing in outdoor areas.

Go the Distance MN 50K, 100K and 150K challenge

ALL AGES During the height of quarantine, we brought you the Stay Strong Minnesota 50K challenge and had a great response of people staying motivated during that challenging time.

We want to keep the active momentum going with a fun fall challenge! This time around we are turning it up a notch, and you can choose to participate in a 50K (31 miles), 100K (62 miles) or 150K (93 miles) – Go the Distance MN! The challenge will run from Oct. 1 – 31. An activity log will be available to download when you register. Challengers may participate for free, or they can choose to pay a fee and receive a commemorative medal and buff.
