Go green Plant a tree or perennial Fall is a great time to plant a tree in your yard or a perennial in your garden. It is a perfect time for planting due to the cool, wet weather, but nurseries will also reduce prices on many items in fall to reduce their inventory. Native trees and plants are still abundant and available from most nurseries in the fall.

Fall is the time to remove buckthorn Fall is the best time to remove buckthorn from your yard because it’s easier to distinguish buckhorn from native plants. Buckthorn leaves will still be green, while native plant leaves are turning color or have dropped to the ground. Other identifiers include thorny stems a lot of small black berries. Buckthorn is a non-native, invasive plant that spreads quickly and chokes out native vegetation and landscaping. To control buckthorn, cut stems to the ground, and then paint the stems, stump and exposed root flares with the chemical Glyphosate or Tryclopyamine (sold under the name Ortho Brush B-Gon). Chemicals applied in the fall or winter months are effective because the plant is dormant and the herbicide is transported to the root system. For information on buckthorn control or help identifying it, visit https://bit.ly/1EQHSN5.

Pruning your trees: timing is everything The best time to prune your trees, especially elms and oaks, is during the dormant season – November through March. DO NOT prune elms or oaks April through September. During these months, the fungus of Dutch elm disease and oak wilt disease are persistent and present within the atmosphere, potentially infecting any tree with an open wound (branch pruning location) through wind dissemination or insect transport.

Use a licensed tree contractor If you do decide to have any type of work done to your trees, use a tree contractor licensed by the City of St. Louis Park. The city license ensures that the company has liability and workers compensation insurance to eliminate property owners' responsibility or liability of injury on or damage to your property from a misguided tree service. Don’t use a contractor that solicits door-to-door, demanding payment up front or pressuring you to use their service. Many tree contractors will tell you they are licensed, but often times they are not specifically licensed to work in St. Louis Park, which is required. For a current list of city licensed tree services, call 952.924.2562 or visit www.stlouispark.org/trees.

When purchasing plants for your yard, think about where the plant comes from; where was it grown? The closer the plant was grown to St. Louis Park, the more likely it will survive in your yard. Often times, plants purchased through nationwide retailers will be grown in milder climates and will not be established enough to survive our frigid winters. Buy plants locally when possible. For more information on recommended trees for St. Louis Park, visit www.stlouispark.org/trees For information on perennials, visit https://bit.ly/2xn9WOb.

Event volunteers are needed to dress in costume and run games on the evenings of Friday, Oct. 19 and Saturday, Oct. 20, and many more are needed for set up and tear down. Email Becky McConnell at bmcconnell@stlouispark.org to learn more and sign up for this fun annual event!

Hydrant Hero

The St. Louis Park Fire Department would like to remind homeowners and businesses with fire hydrants on (or near) their property to please shovel the snow around the fire hydrant after each snowfall and keep the hydrant clear of plants overgrowth during the summer. There are about 1,700 fire hydrants in St. Louis Park. While we will have a crew of firefighters removing snow around hydrants, they cannot clean all of them in a timely manner. Protect your family and neighbors when seconds count by adopting a hydrant and becoming a hydrant hero. To adopt a hydrant, go to www.hydranthero.org. Choose a hydrant, click on the “Adopt me” link, and fill out the registration form – You can even give your hydrant a name! Contact Assistant Chief Cary Smith at 952.924.2171 with any questions.

Interpretive Center project update

In May, the St. Louis Park City Council voted to approve the design development phase of the Westwood Hills Nature Center project, allowing staff and consultants to move to the next phase of preparing designs and specifications for construction. The city council will consider the construction documents and authorize bids for the project this fall, with approval of bids and project authorization taking place by the end of the year. Construction is expected to start in spring 2019, with completion in 2020. The estimated project cost has grown by $500,000 from the original cost of $12 million due to soil conditions that will require a different foundation; however, those costs may eventually be offset by savings in other areas. The design goal is to achieve zero energy, where sufficient on-site renewable energy is produced in order to balance the building's annual consumption. This design aspect is in keeping with the city’s Climate Action Plan, adopted in February 2018 by the St. Louis Park City Council. Visit www.stlouispark.org/whnc/new-interpretive-center for more information about the project, including details about the upcoming neighborhood meeting and planning commission public hearing.
