Dig out last year’s treasure, throw on the masterpiece you just created or simply enjoy the creativity of others. This 5K course loops through Louisiana Oaks Park and the lighted trees of Oak Hill Park. Afterwards, warm up across the street at Park Tavern and revel in your accomplishments while wearing your brandnew race medal. Registrants also receive a goodie bag. Be the Light Winter Solstice Walk

We will use this shortest day of the year to help us remember that many in our community aren’t able to "see the light” because of struggles with mental illness or difficult situations.

Activities will include a self-guided luminary trail, a fire, s’mores and making your own luminary. See page 18.

St. Louis Park Skate School offers a hybrid skating program to meet the needs of all our skaters that incorporates the Learn to Skate USA and Ice Skating Institute (I.S.I) weSKATE program curriculum. Each class presents a progression of specific skills that build upon one another. Contact the skating director at skate@stlouispark.org with questions.

What level do you register for?

If you are not sure what level to register your child for, please register them as follows: • S katers who are 6 years old and younger, who have little or no skating experience, sign up for Beginner Snowplow.

• S katers who are 7 years old and older, who have little or no skating experience, sign up for Basic 1/Pre-Alpha. Class does move a little faster than Beginner Snowplow classes.

Skaters may be moved at instructor discretion during the first few weeks of class to a level that is appropriate or more comfortable for them.

Session registration deadlines and class exceptions In order to staff and add classes as needed, deadline to register for classes is two weeks prior to the start of the next session. Please add your name to the waitlist if a class is full.

Additional classes may be added. Skaters registered for the prior session will be given priority.

Special notes • Fee includes skate rental, ISI weSKATE membership, practice ice (if available) and three free open skate passes.

• Practice ice (if available) on the day of class is open to registered skaters and the parents of snowplow class participants only. No practice ice available on Sunday sessions.

• Protective headgear is required for all snowplow skaters. Bicycle or lightweight hockey helmets are acceptable.

• No shoes or boots on the ice.

• S katers should wear warm, comfortable clothing, including gloves or mittens.

• F irst-time skaters and those using rental skates should arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of class to be on time.

AGES 5+ This program consists of a modified learn-toskate curriculum and test standards and opens the door to the wonderful world of ice skating for individuals of all abilities. FREESTYLE LEVEL SKATERS The Rec Center, 3700 Monterey Drive Improve your skating skills and performance on the ice. This class will vary week to week covering jump and spin exercises, strength and conditioning, balance and flexibility.

Off-ice classes complement a well-rounded skater’s training. Skaters will improve flexibility, balance, core strength, stamina and jump/spin technique. Come to class in athletic/skating attire and athletic footwear.

AGES 5+ The Rec Center, 3700 Monterey Drive One of the most important things skaters need to learn is a proper rotation technique for jumps and spins. Off-ice harness training provides skaters the opportunity to practice and improve their air rotation position and eliminates the focus of the on-ice set up and potential falls. This training is offered to skaters of all abilities to work on their technique in a safe environment. Skaters should wear athletic/skating attire and athletic footwear.

Developmental Open Ice Skating

Annual Spring Ice Show AGES 4+ The Rec Center, 3700 Monterey Drive

Join us for the 2019 St. Louis Park Skate School Spring Ice Show! This is your skater’s moment to shine and show what they’ve learned in skate school in a choreographed program to music. Skaters will be divided by level just as in a typical skate school class. Skaters must also be enrolled in regular session classes prior to the show to participate.

Each group will have five to eight practices, between Feb. 23 – March 24, leading up to the show, including dress rehearsal on Friday, March 22. Practices will be 30 – 60 minutes in length, and final practice schedule will be determined by participation numbers.

AGES 4+ Westwood Hills Nature Center is the perfect venue for any child’s birthday party. Birthday parties include a one-hour program led by one of our naturalists and another hour for gifts and food in a private party room for up to 12 children (extra fee for additional children). Children will meet a live animal, hike outdoors and then celebrate in the party room. You bring the treats, paperware and presents.

Interpretive Center project update

Authorization for the Westwood Hills Nature Center project will take place in November, with some work starting in late November.

Construction is expected to start in spring 2019, with completion in 2020. The estimated project cost is $12.5 million.

The Bassett Creek Watershed Management Commission is partnering with the city to install a water feature north of the new interpretive building. This feature will improve water quality by providing additional stormwater runoff storage, reducing runoff volume and reducing sediments and nutrients in the water through infiltration, evaporation or evapotranspiration. The water feature’s interpretive signs, interactive pumps and pedestrian bridges for access will serve as educational tools for visitors. An educational curriculum will be developed based on the bog and the hydrologic cycle represented through the water feature.

An arts and culture task force has been established to discuss opportunities to include art in the new interpretive building.

The goal of the new interpretive building is to be zero energy, with 100 percent of the building’s annual energy needs supplied by on-site renewable energy. This design aspect aligns with the city’s Climate Action Plan, adopted in February 2018 by the St. Louis Park City Council.

Terraced into the hill, the amphitheater connects the park to the Excelsior & Grand Town Green. Its eight terraced tiers offer seating for 300 people. Westwood Hills Nature Center, 8300 W. Franklin Ave. Located near the parking lot, this park building has an open design that seats up to 25 people. Westwood Hills Nature Center, 8300 W. Franklin Ave. The Westwood water garden is another exclusive and scenic location to add to your wedding, event or photo shoot. Community gardens

The City of St. Louis Park manages more than 100 community garden plots throughout the city. The plots are grouped into five gardens in four parks and one private property. Community gardens increase a sense of community ownership and stewardship, while producing future city leaders and contributors. Garden plots are available to rent for $35 per season and can be applied for through the city's natural resources division. Past years have produced a waiting list for participants; plots are assigned in March on a firstcome, first-serve basis. Tree pruning to begin in January

Each year the City of St. Louis Park hires a licensed tree service to prune a portion of the city’s boulevard trees. This “rotational” pruning takes place from January through March. The city-hired tree service contractor, S & S Horticulture and Tree, Inc., will start the first week in January 2019 finishing the Birchwood neighborhood, then moving into the Lenox and Bronx neighborhoods. They will prune through the end of March 2019. This work is intended to improve the health, safety and function of boulevard trees; each boulevard tree is pruned once every nine years. Property owners are responsible for the full cost of pruning trees on private property, and may use only tree services licensed by the city.

By licensing tree contractors, the city is assuring its property owners that these companies have adequate insurance and qualifications to perform safe and professional tree work. Pruning of trees is strongly recommended during tree dormancy, November through March.

The City of St. Louis Park has an annual tree sale for residents.

Beginning March 4, visit www.treetrust.org to order and pay for your trees. Trees are $35 each with a maximum of three trees per property. Tree pickup will be Saturday, May 4 from 8 a.m. – noon at the Municipal Service Center, 7305 Oxford St.

The cleanup will be outside, so if the weather is severe, the event may be postponed.

Reach for Resources

The adaptive recreation program is a cooperative effort between Reach for Resources and the cities of Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Chanhassen, Chaska, Golden Valley, Plymouth, Maple Grove and St. Louis Park. Reach is an agency which serves individuals with developmental disabilities and their families in western Hennepin County and eastern Carver County. Services include adaptive recreation, independent living support, case management and counseling. NOTE: For persons not living in one of the above communities, you are considered a “non-resident” and need to add $8 to select registration fees. The St. Louis Park Fire Department would like to remind homeowners and businesses with fire hydrants on or near their property to please shovel the snow around the fire hydrant after each snowfall and keep the hydrant clear of plant overgrowth during the summer.

There are about 1,700 fire hydrants in St. Louis Park. While we will have a crew of firefighters that remove snow around hydrants, they cannot clean all of them in a timely manner. Protect your family and neighbors when seconds count by adopting a hydrant and becoming a hydrant hero.

School volunteers wanted!

St. Louis Park Schools are seeking volunteers to assist students throughout the district.

Reading volunteers are needed to help beginning readers in first grade through high school who are learning English. If you prefer mathematics, we need volunteers for elementary arithmetic through calculus at the high school. Volunteers are also needed to help in the media centers with shelving books and other activities designed to assist the teachers and students. If you have just one hour per week during the school day, we can use you and will work with you to find a placement that fits your interest and time.

DECA competition judges

Students from St. Louis Park and the entire west metro area will be participating in the DECA competition at Wayzata High School.

We are looking for 30 judges to role-play, interview and evaluate students in a variety of business and marketing related events.

Morning shifts from 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and afternoon shifts from 12:45 – 4:30 p.m. are available; the competition takes place on Sunday, Jan. 27. Arts and crafts Beginning Hardanger Embroidery

Hardanger is a counted-thread embroidery originally from Norway. Traditionally it was done in white-on-white, but now often incorporates any color of thread or fabric.

The pattern is stitched, then portions of the fabric are cut away and lacy stitching is worked over the open areas. We will do a small project to learn many of the basic stitches.

Friends of the Arts

St. Louis Park Friends of the Arts (FOTA) is a nonprofit community organization dedicated to supporting, promoting and enhancing the arts in our community. FOTA connects people and organizations around the arts, shares arts-related information and resources, and coordinators community arts programs. FOTA embraces art as inclusive of all creative mediums, and believes in the spirit of collaboration of artists and community members in inspiring and promoting art and art forms.

FOTA serves the creative community and provides arts access for all community members through three programs: Arts for Life scholarships for any St. Louis Park residents to enrich their lives through the arts, Arts and Culture Grants for artists and arts organizations to bring art work and activities to our local community, and Our Town, a community-wide celebration of the arts with both participatory and audience experiences.

Arts and Creativity in St. Louis Park

Friends of the Arts organizes and partners to bring high– quality arts and creative activities to St. Louis Park. We have opportunities for all sorts of creatives. Arts for Life Scholarships

Here’s a chance to explore your personal creativity. St. Louis Park residents of all ages, races, genders and economic backgrounds are invited to apply for funding to enrich their lives through a creative experience. Funding is awarded for music, visual arts, writing, theater, dance classes, workshops, supplies and more.

Gift of Music Program provides musical instruments to students in our community to participate in lessons, band or orchestra.

More than 700 instruments have been placed in the hands of young learners! If you are interested in donating an instrument, call us at 952.928.6422. We will be happy to pick up any instrument, get it in playing condition and give it to a student!

St. Louis Park Community Band is dedicated to making concert band music accessible to all. They provide a perfect mix of challenging music, social atmosphere and great performances.

Maggie’s Farm Theater’s mission is to present a fresh vision of American popular culture rooted in our common past, connecting diverse audiences with a shared appreciation of the power of art.
