Philando Castile was from St. Louis Family mourns public school supervisor killed by police in Minnesota By Mariah Stewart Of The St. Louis American The black man who was fatally shot by a police officer during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights, Minnesota last week has roots in St. Louis. On July 6, Philando Castile, 32, was shot multiple times in front of his fiancée and her four-year-old daughter by St. Anthony Police Officer Jeronimo Yanez. The aftermath of the

shooting was livestreamed in a gut-wrenching Facebook Live video by fiancée’s girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds. “He let the officer know he had a firearm and he was reaching for his wallet and the officer just shot him in his arm,” Reynolds said in the livestream. “You just shot four bullets into him, sir. He was just getting his license and registration.” As she calmly spoke to the officer, he continued to wave the gun at her and the dying Castile and utter curses. Castile was a nutrition services supervisor at J.J. Hill Montessori Magnet School. He was appointed to the supervisor See CASTILE, A7

What does it mean to be an advisor? Or advocate? Or activist? How do race and class influence effectively teaching and learning, policy and practice? What is the significance of culturally responsive and relevant teaching? These are the questions that will be raised and discussed at “Educator

“We pray for unity and oneness – and, Lord, I know that’s a tall order,” said Rev. James Stewart, senior pastor of Murchison Tabernacle CME Church. A group organized by the St. Louis County NAACP gathered in the church on Sunday, July 8 for a prayer service as the broken relationship between law enforcement and the black community played out before the eyes of the world – and resulted in a week of nonstop violence, protest and heartache.

On Tuesday, July 5, Alton Sterling was shot by police and killed in front of a convenience market in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In citizen videos, he appeared to have both arms pinned to the ground and unable to reach for a gun, as police claimed.

On Wednesday, July 6, the fiancée of Philando Castile broadcast on Facebook Live the aftermath of his fatal shooting by a police officer during a routine traffic stop in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. While the officer still held them at gunpoint, Diamond Reynolds calmly told the cop that Castile informed him he was legally carrying a gun and followed his instructions. On Thursday, July 7, five Dallas Police officers were killed by what police claimed was a “lone gunman” perched atop a parking structure during a protest of the aforementioned tragedies.
