Rabbi Michael Alper elevated to senior rabbi role at TI, alongside his wife, Rabbi Amy Feder ELLEN FUTTERMAN EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Congregation Temple Israel’s Rabbi Michael Alper has been promoted to senior rabbi alongside his wife, Rabbi Amy Feder.

Feder has served as the synagogue’s senior rabbi since 2010 with support from Alper. A statement released by TI said, “Over the past 13 years, their style of leadership and vision for our TI community has grown our membership, and in effect, grown the needs and level of engagement within our community, too.

To best serve our members, we have long believed that having both Rabbi Amy and Rabbi Michael at Temple Israel’s helm would significantly enhance our future and the lives of those who attend our synagogue.”

TI Board President Louise Losos underscored that statement adding: “The rabbis, Amy and Michael, have been our TI rabbis for 12 to 13 years, just two of them.

We reached a point where there was a mutual desire to make a long-term commitment. They are our rabbinical family, and we want them to be our rabbinical family.”

Losos added that TI’s Board of Trustees are negotiating long-term contracts with both of them, for up to 20 years.

Alper said he was delighted by the promotion, especially knowing the congregation had embraced it.

“It elevates what we are doing and have been doing for some time to a new level while also saying this is what we’d like for the future, which is very exciting,” he said. “It makes me feel wonderful to have

In order to promote Alper, the board voted in September to amend TI’s by-laws to permit having more than one senior rabbi on staff at a time. Members then nominated Alper to serve as an equal counterpart to Feder.

“With great enthusiasm, we notified all TI members of the important by-law changes along with an invitation to a community-wide vote on Friday, Nov. 17

at Shabbat services,” according to the statement. “Per our by-laws, we needed a minimum of 50 member families present to ratify Rabbi Michael’s promotion. That night was one of the most well-attended Shabbat services in memory with seats full and only standing room left in the sanctuary as our members unanimously voted to ratify his promotion.”

Alper, a native of California, graduated from Boston University with a degree in history. He moved to Israel to begin Hebrew Union College in 2001 and has been traveling to Israel as often as possi-

ble ever since.

Following ordination, he moved with Feder to St. Louis to begin working as the education director at Central Reform Congregation. Two years later, he moved to Temple Israel, where he and Feder, who married in 2005, have been working alongside each other ever since. His greatest passion is teaching; he’s been lauded as having a creative approach to encourage students of all ages to access Judaism in new ways.

Nine individuals and one married couple were recognized Nov. 28 as the 2023 Jewish Light Unsung Heroes. The 14th annual event took place at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park. Unsung Heroes, which began in 2010, shines a light on individuals of any background or faith who generously volunteer or go above and beyond to help the St. Louis Jewish community, and Jewish St. Louisans who volunteer, either within the local Jewish community and/or the community at large.

29-foot mega menorah to be erected in St. Louis

As we approach this year’s Hanukkah celebration, which begins Dec. 7, Chabad urges the community to embrace their

Jewish heritage in a big way. Big in the form of a new public mega-menorah to be installed at Kiener Plaza Park, near the Gateway Arch. The 29-foot menorah is just 5-feet shorter than the world’s largest menorah, which stands 36 feet tall and is

located in Manhattan, N.Y. This significant installation, generously funded by local philanthropist Michael Staenberg, will bear the name “The Staenberg Menorah” and will illuminate the surroundings throughout the entire

“I think the message of this menorah is that despite everything going on in our world, the Jewish people stand tall, proud and confident,” said Rabbi Yosef Landa, regional director of Chabad of Greater St. Louis, the organization behind this effort.

“Now, more than ever, we need to be sharing the light of Hanukkah with our entire St. Louis region, and light never fails to overcome darkness.”

Staenberg, president of the Jewish Light’s Board of Directors, echoed Rabbi Landa’s sentiment.

“Now, more than ever we need to feel pride in being Jewish and being Jewish in St. Louis. This giant menorah should certainly do that,” said Staenberg.

Standing 29-feet tall and 18-feet wide, The Staenberg Menorah contains a total of 32 lights and is built out of 250 feet of truss. It was built in just a month and a half by Klance Unlimited, a St. Louisbased production support company.

The entire St. Louis community is invited to the inaugural Staenberg menorah lighting on Thursday, Dec. 7 at 6 p.m. The lighting will be followed by a holiday celebration, which will feature holiday music and free ice skating, as well as hot drinks and a selection of traditional Hanukkah foods that will be for sale and sponsored

by Cantor Injury Law. The event is free, but all are asked to register online at https://bit.ly/2023-menorah-lighting.

Hard-working ‘Hanukkah Joe’ carries on one family’s longtime holiday tradition Harold Sanger shows the gifts accumulated during the year that ‘Hanukkah Joe’ will present him during the holiday.

In 1989, comedian Jon Lovitz donned a blue and white fur hat in the role of Hanukkah Harry on “Saturday Night Live.”

In the skit’s setup, Santa had taken ill, so Harry stepped in to assist his old friend, delivering practical gifts like socks and trousers to good little gentile girls and boys.

Hanukkah Harry bears little resemblance to another fictional Holiday of Lights apparition who makes an annual visit to Clayton. That would be Hanukkah Joe, one of the weirder family Hanukkah traditions you’re likely to encounter.

Hanukkah Joe is an invisible mensch who magically knows exactly what former Clayton Mayor Harold Sanger wants in the way of Hanukkah gifts.

This Sanger family tradition includes a not-so-secret component. Sanger is really Hanukkah Joe. Over the previous 12 months, he buys items for himself, then wraps them and stores them for the holiday.

A couple of years ago, over the course of the holiday’s eight nights, Hanukkah Joe delivered Sanger an apple corer, tractor tires, a pair of gloves, a flashlight, a drone and a metal detector to use on the beach. Curiously, every item was on Sanger’s wish list.

Diane Sanger, Harold’s wife, said, “He doesn’t buy things like underwear or socks.” The tradition grew out of the family’s annual Hanukkah gift exchange where Harold Sanger inevitably received things he didn’t need or want.

“When the kids got old enough to give me gifts, if I didn’t need them, I’d return them,” Sanger said. “I wasn’t happy that they were spending the little money they had on gifts for me. So many years ago, I started the tradition of buying myself eight presents, accumulated during the year, as I found things that I liked. I wrapped them up and put a sticker on them saying they were for me from Hanukkah Joe.” Before the Sanger family Hanukkah gathering and gift exchange, “Joe” hauls out the gifts and puts them on a table alongside other presents.

“When the whole family is here, the kids come in and unwrap their gifts and when it’s my turn — and I’m last — they get all my presents and I act surprised and say, ‘It’s just what I wanted!’

“The little ones don’t know that I’m pretending. The older ones have finally realized there’s not a Hanukkah Joe. This has been going on for at least 15 years, and I have bought myself some really, really cool stuff.”

Joseph’s story amazes, with or without the dreamcoat

For the past 15 years, I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside my wife. People often ask us whether it’s difficult to live and work together, and the truth is I really can’t imagine it any other way. We both like to talk about everything from Torah to what’s on sale at Schnucks to who’s turn it is to serve as our kids’ Uber driver. And while we don’t always agree, we nearly always find a comfortable middle ground.

However, once a year, at the same time of year, we always have the same argument, and this happens to be the week of that annual tiff. The question at hand is always this: Will we or will we not be singing something from “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” at Shabbat services?

For those of you who know Rabbi Amy and her penchant for musical theater, you can probably guess which side of the argument is hers. Though, in my defense, I also happen to enjoy a Gershwin tune as much as the next guy.

I just don’t like this one particular musical.

Hear me out. I am all for the idea of taking a biblical story and making it accessible. Some of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s songs are beautiful. And I’ll be the first to admit that making the character of Pharoah into an Elvis impersonator is pretty clever.

But the story of Joseph is perhaps my very favorite story in the Torah. Stretching over several weeks of parashiyot, we get to see Joseph over the whole span of his life, from a pampered, favored child to a prisoner to the savior of a nation.

This story is so incredibly rich with meaning that every time I read it, I discover something new. This year alone, in studying the story with a few fantastic b’nai mitzvah students, I found messages in it I’d never noticed before.

What if, like Jacob Goldenberg suggested, this is really a story about loyalty? What if, as Irie Rubenstein realized, Joseph’s problems with his brothers would never have gotten so bad had he just stopped talking for a minute and tried to listen?

The Joseph story is an epic telling of one person’s journey, yet it’s so richly woven in the text that anyone can find themselves in it if they try. And while Webber had his interpretation, I’m much more interested in the ways that we’re able to interpret it on our own without his words as the soundtrack to the story, giving us the freedom to find our selves in this text each time we read it.

This year, I encourage you to read the Joseph story once more, whether it’s an annual read for you or the first time in a long time. Let your imagination run wild. Find your meaning and your dreaming in the text. Don’t be limited to just one telling, just one interpretation, just one dream, because in the end (cue the soundtrack here), any dream will do.

Open letter to Jewish organizations in St. Louis and the surrounding area

To the Jewish organizations that raised us: We walked your halls in preschool, learned Hebrew in your classrooms, became b’nai mitzvah in your sanctuaries, and led your youth group boards. We were your campers and later, your counselors.

We prayed with you, celebrated holidays with you, ate kugel and played gaga with you. You taught us how to live Jewish lives, and for that we are endlessly thankful. We hold those wonderful memories and lessons of Torah in our hearts as we write this letter.

to Yom Ha’azmaut celebrations year after year without ever hearing the word “Nakba.” We said “next year in Jerusalem” without learning that the United States did not at the time recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. We sang Herzl’s famous quote Im tirtzu ain zo agadah in many a song session, without also learning that he framed the Zionist project as “something colonial” (source: “The Complete Diaries of Theodor Herzl”). The image of Hamas using citizens as human shields in 2009 was burned into our brains, without any acknowledgement that the U.N. Human Rights Council also found Israel guilty of war crimes during the same time period (United Nations Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza conflict, online at https://bit. ly/3t4AGk0).

At the present moment however, our feelings of grief and fear and rage go beyond geo-political minutiae. We are concerned with the state of Judaism itself within the communities that raised us and beyond. As people who are so grateful to be influenced by these Jewish organizations, we have been sincerely disheartened by the ways that many of our home institutions have taken such narrow-minded, life-denying stances.

We mourn the murder of 1,200 Israelis

by Hamas and call for hostages to be released, and we are also devastated by these facts: • At least 15,200 Palestinians have been killed since Oct. 7, 70% of them women and children. • Around 80%, of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have had to flee their homes.

(Reuters, https://bit.ly/3uR7Nbo) • At least 10,000 Palestinians with Israeli work permits were recently returned to their families in Gaza. Many report being beaten, tortured and left without food and water. (http://archive.today/ JNWqu) • Within the West Bank, Jewish settlers are increasingly emboldened to commit violence against Palestinians, in an attempt to drive them out of their homes.

(Vox article, https://bit.ly/3GuAAVS) • And the violence by Israel onto the Palestinian people is not new, but rather is a continuation of 75 years of violence that has robbed countless Palestinian people of their lives and the lives of their family members, as well as their familial homes, the land they tended to for generations, and so much more.

These facts stand in direct conflict with our Jewish values – the values you taught us. We believe that everyone was created B’Tselem Elohim and should be treated as such. We believe that “When strangers reside with you in your land, you shall not wrong them” (Exodus 23:9). We believe that only “If you do not oppress the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not follow other gods to your own harm, then I will let you live in this place, in the land I gave your ancestors for ever and ever” (Jeremiah 7:6-7). We agree with Rabbi Hillel, that the entire Torah can be summed up as this: that which is hateful to you do not do to another. And, as many in

the Jewish community call out “Never Again” to attempt to justify Israel’s response to the Oct. 7 attack, we too call out “Never Again” and call on our communities to extend that cry to the lives of Palestinians, as well.

Since Oct. 7, we have been putting the Jewish values you taught us growing up into practice, only to find that those who taught those values to us were no longer fighting alongside us. We are heartbroken to think that the institutions that raised us are failing to act on these Jewish values that we hold so dear. We have seen so many of those close to us have their hearts harden during this time, just as Pharaoh’s did when we were slaves. In order to move the soul of our community in a direction of peace, we ask the following: • We ask that our Jewish clergy, teachers, leaders, and community members publicly voice support for a ceasefire.

• We ask that our communities put pressure on elected officials to support a ceasefire and send aid to Palestinians, through phone calls, email or direct action.

• We ask that future statements, programming, or other teachings about Israel and Palestine contain diverse perspectives, including Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank and the diaspora, and are made with a good faith effort to avoid cherry picking facts.

Tzedek, Tzedek tirdof! May we all live lives according to our Jewish values, especially when it is most difficult to do so.

A moment of hope in a world drenched in hate

A few days before Thanksgiving, I was scrolling through Facebook and saw one of those “suggested for you” posts from an organization called Call to Activism.

Although I was unfamiliar with the group, I was struck by the content of its message.

It contained a black-and-white photo of tap master Bill “Bojangles” Robinson and little Shirley Temple Black in their iconic staircase dance during the 1935 movie “The Little Colonel.” The post explained that Robinson had been barred from holding the white girl’s hand during the scene, but the 6-year-old actress grabbed hold anyway. The historic scene became the first time an interracial couple danced together onscreen. Black, who maintained a long-term friendship with Robinson, credited him with making her a better dancer throughout her career.

The post concludes, “In other words, it’s hard to live in color when you just see black and white. In a world full of hate, Be A Light.”

Yes, our world is filled with hate. Sure, that’s nothing new, it’s been around throughout human history. Yet, it somehow feels worse than ever. Even before the horrific Hamas attack on Israel, it had become unbearable to watch the news: Russia’s unprovoked attack on Ukraine; senseless gun violence and almost daily mass shootings in the United States; and

greedy, dishonest politicians who unabashedly cheat, lie and fan the flames of bigotry in order to win power.

Unfortunately, the list goes on and on.

There are days I simply want to pull the covers over my head and stay in bed. But, strangely enough, the one place I find comfort is within the maze of hallways that connect Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Siteman Cancer Center and Washington University School of Medicine in the Central West End. No, I’m not a doctor or a nurse or any kind of medical professional. I’m a volunteer who never saw any of this coming when I retired from a writing job last year.

Of course, I wanted to stay busy and find a way to give back. But my choice of location wasn’t totally altruistic.

To be honest, the Barnes-Jewish and Washington University campus is the only place in all of St. Louis that reminds me of New York City, where I worked as a journalist most of my adult life. Although I moved here for family reasons, St. Louis has never completely felt like home except for when I’m on the medical campus.

There’s lots of foot traffic, everybody is in a hurry and it’s a melting pot of folks with different accents, skin colors, religions, gender identities — you name it. And, for heaven’s sake, nobody cares where you went to high school. They have a lot more important things on their minds.

But as time has passed, I realize it’s a lot

more than the environment that draws me to the place. It’s even more than the good feeling that comes from giving assistance.

It’s the kindness and compassion I see every day that I’m there. And it’s more than medical and support staff interacting with patients and their families. Complete strangers, out-of-the-blue, are gracious to each other. They readily reach out to lend a hand or a kind word to someone they feel needs it.

I could give dozens and dozens of anecdotes, but one that especially gives me hope for humankind happened recently in the Siteman Cancer Center seventh floor waiting room at the Center for Advanced Medicine. One of my volunteer duties is helping at the information desk, where I have a good view of most of the floor.

Since our patients and their caregivers are adults, it’s usually pretty quiet. But sometimes children are waiting with relatives while a family member gets treatment or is seen by a doctor.

On this particular afternoon, there was a white mother with a toddler-aged daughter who broke the room’s silence with giggles of delight as she escaped the mom’s grasp and raced across the floor. As their wait grew longer, the mom was obviously getting tired and having trouble keeping up with the tiny child.

The situation caught the eye of a little Black girl, maybe 6 or 7 years old, who was sitting with her own mother. The girl

The mom readily agreed with a huge smile of relief.

Things quieted down as the two girls became engrossed in their games and storytelling. They didn’t stop until the Black family was ready to leave. The Black girl said goodbye and walked with her parents towards the elevator. But the toddler made a beeline for them with her arms outstretched towards her new friend. The Black girl stopped and reached down to hug the child and kissed her cheek.

Here was the light. It was love in its purest and most natural form. Hate, quite clearly, is an evil lesson that is taught.

I pray these two girls never learn it.

Equity-driven dumbing down of K-12 education accelerate

American K-12 education has reached new depths in terms of academic achievement. The signs are everywhere in plummeting proficiency scores across all subject areas.

The National Assessment of Educational Progress reports that just 13% and 20% of eighth-graders met U.S. history and civics standards, respectively, the lowest rates on record; only 31% and 26% of eighth-graders were proficient in reading and math respectively (George Will, Washington Post, June 28). Most recently, scores on ACT college admission tests have dropped to the lowest in 30 years (Associated Press, Oct. 11).

The disruption of education due to the COVID pandemic is only partly to explain for such abysmal performance. The larger problem is a long-term, ever-increasing dumbing down of classroom standards and expectations over the past half-century.

What partly accounts for this pattern is the rise of the postmodern belief in the relativism of factual knowledge and values that meshed well with concerns about not damaging a child’s self-esteem. With no right or wrong answers, how can anyone be held accountable?

But the main driver of the dumbing-down trend is a well-intentioned if misplaced obsession with “equity” — allowing a concern about educating struggling, low-achieving kids to trump the needs of higher-achieving kids. In trying to accomplish “mass excellence” — an oxymoronic term once used by a progressive-minded assistant superintendent in the Clayton school district — the result instead has been mass failure for far too many children.

As an educator, parent and citizen, I have personally witnessed this phenomenon and attempted to do whatever I could to counter it.

Having just retired as a college professor, I have been cleaning out my office file cabinets. I came across letters I wrote to

University City school administrators and school board members some 40 years ago raising concerns then about the lowering of standards I saw happening in U. City schools my children attended. Allow me to quote from just three letters.

In a November 1986 letter to the superintendent: “I hope you will take up the tremendous challenge of serving the needs of all students — Black and white, advantaged and disadvantaged, high-achieving and low-achieving. This means (1) retaining and improving the Challenge courses targeted at our best students (including recruiting more high-achieving Black students not by lowering standards and watering down the courses but by working even harder to cast a wider net to attract those truly outstanding and deserving students with the ability and willingness to work hard academically); (2) seeking out innovative ways of providing enrichment activities as well for the broad cross-section of students; and (3) exploring ways to meet the needs of low-achieving students who with proper help can not only be brought up to grade level but in fact can be motivated to reach much higher.”

In a March 1987 letter to the head of the Gifted Program: “I am deeply concerned about educating all the kids in the U. City system. … However, my concern for equality and fairness does not mean that we have to sacrifice excellence. … If the day comes when requiring students to take a test to demonstrate their competence to be placed in a given level of math or English is considered unfair, then we will have witnessed the end of even the pretense of excellence in the public schools of America.”

In a March 1988 letter to the superintendent: “After eight years in the U. City school system, my wife and I finally have decided to put up our house for sale. … Regrettably, I have seen the school district in the last year or so start down a slippery slope away from a commitment to excellence and

Martin Rochester, Curators’ Distinguished Teaching Professor of Political Science Emeritus at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, is the author of 10 books on international and American politics. toward an acceptance of mediocrity based on a lowest common denominator approach to education. … Our highest achieving Black and white students are being betrayed as expectations for them are being lowered. … In the last year we have witnessed the invidious erosion of merit-based track learning, the virtual destruction of a world-class jazz program at the high school, the institution of a whole group approach to learning in the elementary schools which stifles the brightest, hardest working kids, and I could go on.”

I should note that the overhaul of the University City high school jazz band — it was considered too “elitist” because John Brophy, the renowned band director, dared to require auditions to join the band — was the last straw for my wife and me.

Brophy left to head the band at John Burroughs, and my family left for the Clayton school district.

In my 2000 book “Class Warfare: Besieged Schools, Bewildered Parents, Betrayed Kids, and the Attack on Excellence,” I explained how the jazz band episode was a metaphor for what ailed public schools as I tried to write a personal memoir of the dumbing down of American education locally and nationally. Although my kids ended up getting a tremendous education in the Clayton schools with some great teachers, it nonetheless required me to continue to do battle with the aforementioned administrator and others who were

pushing for the idiotic goal of “mass excellence.” As noted below, even as exceptional a school district as Clayton must contend with the forces of mediocrity.

In case you have not noticed, dumbing-down is reaching new depths today, driven by the siren call of “equity,” particularly the ongoing effort to narrow “the achievement gap” between races.

In Clayton and elsewhere, faculty have been assigned to read Joe Feldman’s “Grading for Equity,” which assumes that minorities cannot be expected to do homework, meet term paper deadlines and perform other normal obligations, so that no students are now penalized for such failure. How does one develop “grit” in a no-consequences culture?

Not surprisingly, grade inflation is out of control even as performance on national assessments declines. Student “GPAs have steadily risen — from an average of 2.68 in 1990 to 2.94 in 2000 . . . and 3.11 in 2019.”

Students typically get 50 points for doing nothing, “even if they plagiarize or cheat.”

Teachers feel “they no longer [can] hold students accountable academically or behaviorally” and hence “America’s teacher pipeline is drying up” (Jessica Grose, New York Times, Oct. 4).

Meanwhile, fanciful “mass excellence” continues to be pursued, as across the country we see news headlines about “Honors Classes Cut to Lift Racial Equity” (Wall Street Journal, Oct. 9). Tom Loveless of the Brookings Institution notes that the new California math framework calls for “all students to take the same math courses through 10th grade, a ‘detracking’ policy that would effectively end the option of eighth-graders taking algebra” (Education Next, Fall 2023). The ceiling and the floor are being lowered everywhere.

The question I have is: does anybody care? It would not appear so, when the alarm has been sounded for at least half a century.

BARRY K. FREEDMAN, career non-profit administrator and passionate baseball fan, died peacefully Dec. 1 after a short illness. He was 76.

Barry is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ava Ehrlich, his sons Alexander Freedman of Oklahoma City and Maxwell Freedman (Chelsea Lauderback) of Chicago. Other family members include his mother Julie Freedman of Chicago, his brother, Dr. Mark Freedman (Dr. Linda Freedman) and sister Winnifred Freedman (Scott Harlan) of Los Angeles. He is preceded in death by his sister, Leesa Goren of Tel Aviv (Dr. Michael Goren), and his father, Dr. Melvin Freedman.

Dozen of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews worldwide join his family in missing him desperately and mourning our loss.

Barry enjoyed his southern roots. Born in Lenoir City, TN, the family soon moved to Memphis then Granite City, IL, where he spent his “wonder years.”

He graduated from Vanderbilt University and began a career in public service. He worked for two governors and at many non-profits in leadership roles, including Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital, Mid-America Transplant, New Detroit, and the Regional Commerce and Growth Assn. He was selected for fellowship program and MPA at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 1983.

He was active in numerous community and religious organizations.

While his career was long and distinguished it was his two boys, his extended family, his fishing buddies, his choir, lunch group, basketball, baseball and his wife Ava who were his world. It was a world full of health challenges and triumphs but the lessons were indelible. It was never, “Why me?” It was always, “Why Not Me?” He savored every day with gratitude. Having dinner with Ava’s sister Hedy and crew, or the Monday lunch crowd with his “brother from another mother,” BF Helman, Barry loved it all.

He was the personification of grace under pressure, courage and the golden rule.

Marvin, Bryan and Norma honed their knack for scoring great deals at local garage sales.

Their passion for finding hidden treasures evolved into a successful business where they shared their fantastic finds with others. Together, they navigated the world of bargain hunting, leaving lasting memories and lots of great stories!

Norma’s quick sense of humor and resilience will be dearly missed. Despite facing numerous challenges in life, she maintained a positive outlook, always finding the best in every circumstance and person.

ETHEL MAE LERNER (Morrison) died peacefully at the Rose Blumkin Jewish Home in Omaha, Nebraska, on November 19, 2023 at the age of 94. Ethel was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on May 3,1929. She married Jerome (Jerry) Lerner in 1948. Together they raised four children, thoroughly enjoying life and their many dear friendships in St. Louis. They were long-time members of Congregation Shaare Emeth. Ethel’s beloved husband Jerry pre-deceased her in October, 2017.

Ethel was an amateur photographer in high school, took photographs for her school’s publications, learned how to fly a Piper Cub after graduation, and was a professional women’s shoe model (size 4). After Ethel retired from West County Famous-Barr’s personnel department, she and Jerry loved antiquing together, accumulating several treasured collections--cookie jars, children’s toys, and salt and pepper shakers favorites among them.

Ethel’s greatest joy was caring for her family.

She was the quintessential mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. A wonderful cook, she happily spent countless hours in the kitchen making everyone’s beloved matzo ball soup, brisket, twice-baked potatoes, challah dressing, buckeye balls and, of course, blintzes.

Ethel adored her husband and family and was adored and beloved by them in return. She is survived by her sons, Gary Lerner (Cheryl) of Omaha, Dean Lerner (Deana) of Des Moines, and two daughters, Donna Wilensky (Standeceased) and Eve Rudolph (Don) who reside in St. Louis. She reveled in the company of her grandchildren (Nicole, Michael, Matthew, Alec, Scott, David, Mark, Molly, Zachary, Kayla, and Carly) and great-grandchildren (Sam, Oliver, Louie, Sebastian, Jonah, Charlie, Kinzie, Nash, Eleanor, Grant, Gavin, Olive, and Lincoln). St. Louis fun was her specialty.

Ron and Bobbe retired to Henderson, NV in 2000 and were very active in their new community, including co-founding the SCA Bunco Club, playing in Mah Jongg tournaments and enjoying Ballroom Dance Club. They loved to cruise and traveled at least once a year following retirement to various destinations.

Bobbe moved to Irvine, CA in 2022 to be closer to her son Gary and his family. Bobbe was a loving daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. She loved animals, especially her dogs. The family suggests memorial contributions can be made to any animal rescue organization.

irst things first, our apologies. Yes, we know Hanukkah is upon us. But two weeks ago, we were cleaning up from Thanksgiving instead of shopping, though I suppose this year isn’t as bad as a decade ago when the first day of Hanukkah fell on Thanksgiving, dubbing the 2013 holiday season, Thanksgivukkah.

In this installment of our annual Editor’s Gift Guide, we focused on Hanukkah gifts you can scoop up at the last minute, including ones that if shipped, promise to arrive in just a couple/few days. And this year we doubled teamed our effort with Chief Digital Content Officer Jordan Palmer, a.k.a. Hanukkah Harry. So if any of the eight gift suggestions below seem mundane, foolish or just plain dumb, you know who to blame (and it’s not Hanukkah Harriet!).

Light up St. Louis

Jeff Vines, co-owner (with his twin brother Randy) of STL Style at 3159 Cherokee St., said the idea for a skyline menorah popped into his head about a year ago. He did some Google searches and found no skyline menorahs for any city, save New York, “but it was very different from what we created.”

STL Style’s limited edition St. Louis Skyline Menorah is made out of high-quality aluminum and manufactured locally at Well Made Workshop in Maplewood. It promises not to rust, retails for $49.95 and comes with a box of Hanukkah candles (stl-style.com).

Divine delights

Need a Hanukkah hostess gift? How about something for the cook in the family?

Look no further than the market at Deli Divine, 5501 Delmar Blvd. Behind the deli counter and seating area in the front, lies a treasure trove of Hanukkah and Jewishrelated merchandise in the back that make perfect gifts, or even a gift basket.

Let’s see, there “Hanukkah in a Box” ($22) and Hanukkah popping “crackers,” ($35) both of which offer eight surprise treats (miniature games, toys, etc.) to the recipient, one for each night. Other possibilities include Star of David pasta noodles ($7.27), dishtowels covered with Jewish holiday symbols ($17), salt-and-pepper shakers that say “love” in Hebrew and English ($17) and more Jewish-related cookbooks than you could shake a fistful of latkes at. And the gift de resistance: “B is for Bagel,” ($15.95) by Rachel Teichman, a colorful board book that allows children to learn their ABCs with a different bagel for every letter, from asiago to za’atar.

Festival of Lightsabers

There are Hanukkah shirts and then there are Hanukkah shirts. What if one combined the usual sym-

bols representing the holiday with your favorite film franchise if that happened to be “Star Wars”?

The folks at rsvlts.com have done just that, pairing Lightsaber and Rebel menorahs with gelt, dreidels and R2-D2 on this shirt made from “Kunuflex,” a material that’s reportedly light, soft and machine washable.

Choose between short sleeves ($70) and long sleeves ($72) for men. Women’s ($70) and children’s sizes ($39$45) also are available, so the whole family can dress alike in matching “Festival of Lightsabers” shirts (and we’ll try not to judge!).

From Israel with love

Recently, we stumbled across a new site called withlovefromisrael.com, begun by three friends from Baltimore, Md. wanting to support Israel after the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas. They’ve curated some of the best gifts made in Israel and/or handmade by Israelis for women, men, babies and kids as well as home décor items and ones specific for Hanukkah.

There’s also a “gifts donated to Israel” section, which features a basket of sweets to be sent to Israeli soldiers (candycornerisrael.com, $18-$50) and a comfort basket for soldiers’ spouses ($63) filled with products from Jerusalem small businesses.

Eradicate latke stink? That would be a Hanukkah miracle

The definition of a miracle is an extraordinary event not characterized by natural or scientific law, therefore being a supernatural act of divine agency. I didn’t know God started her own agency, but I’m super proud of her.

As we light the first candle on the menorah Dec. 7, we take time to remember the great miracle of Hanukkah. We say “a great miracle happened there,” referring to Jerusalem.

A lot of great miracles have also happened here. Yesterday, unprompted, my son said, “Thank you for doing my laundry.” In honor of Hanukkah, I’ll share eight more miracles.

It’s a miracle that a manufacturer hasn’t figured out a way to capitalize on the smell of fried latkes in the home, creating a product to eradicate it. Most of us would pay big money for some hot oil “stench be gone” product … a spray, a candle, a laboratory engineered special odor absorbing oil that sizzles but neutralizes the olfactory offense. Latkes are the treat of the year,

with the stank of it lingering for a least eight crazy nights. Pee-yew! Until that miracle occurs, let’s all just fry latkes in the garage.

It’s a miracle I survived dating. Case in point, a man my friends referred to as “Gay Toupee, the Self-Hating Jew.” I met this guy at a party, and he was a riot. He told me he had a dinner coming up with some work clients and asked me to be his date. While I didn’t have strong romantic feelings, I thought it would still be fun, so I said yes.

My friends came up with the nickname because dude was clearly gay, clearly wearing a toupee, and when the dinner date night rolled around, he said, “Don’t mention that I’m Jewish.” I said, “Uh, your last name is Weissman.”

It’s a miracle people can afford groceries. Why did a certain store’s sales flyer advertise ground beef on sale for $6 a pound? That’s the sale price? How are we feeding our families? And don’t get me started on

college tuition. Is everyone robbing banks?

It’s a miracle we can get through the day sometimes. Dealing with loss, grief, anxiety, depression, addiction, work struggles and the price of ground beef can feel like too much to bear. When you’re overwhelmed, I encourage you, at bedtime, to congratulate yourself on what you’ve accomplished. And if that is just getting through the day, give yourself an extra pat on the back.

It’s a miracle my children are surviving, what with having the world’s most embarrassing parents. There was that time their dad was breathing too loud in public. Who could forget when I offered cookies to a Columnist Amy Fenster Brown is married to Jeff and has two teenage sons, Davis and Leo. She volunteers for several Jewish not-forprofit groups. Fenster Brown is an Emmy Award-winning TV news writer and counts time with family and friends, talking and eating peanut butter among her hobbies.

crew working in our home? And the time we both tried to use teen lingo around some teens … the worst. When I tell the boys no one has ever died of embarrassment, they say there’s a first time for everything. Wise guys.

It’s a miracle my children have any teeth left in their mouths based on the amount of sugar given to them by their grandparents. Grammy Zelda’s magical purse is legendary — no money, no keys, no ID, just all the sugary delights the boys love, ripe for the picking. It’s like a Gucci vending machine. Yum. It’s a miracle that you can, in fact, teach an old dog new tricks. In this case, I was taking my elderly mother to an appointment and she said to me the phrases, “You’re in charge” and “Yes, ma’am.” It’s a miracle she is finally understanding how this works.

It’s a miracle you’re still reading this column. Look, they can’t all be big hits. If your doctor ever gives you 10 minutes to live, just read my column, because sometimes every minute of reading feels like an eternity.

A Hanukkah ode to miraculous olive oil

Hanukkah celebrates the hard-fought victory of the Maccabees over the Syrian Greek army. Following their victory, the Jews rededicated the Second Temple in Jerusalem — removing idols and statues left by their enemies, cleansing the Temple, building a new altar, and rekindling the menorah. However, they found only one small cruse of uncontaminated oil, enough to burn for one day.

Vayikra (Leviticus), Chapter 24 states that the oil used in the menorah “must be pure,” originating from freshly crushed olives. It would have taken longer than one day, however, to bring back additional “pure” oil. Miraculously, that small cruse of oil burned for eight days, long enough for a new batch to arrive and keep the lights of the menorah burning.

Thus, we celebrate Hanukkah for eight days, kindling one additional candle each night. And, as has been the tradition for centuries, we fry latkes in oil. However, the latke tradition did not always include potatoes or the vegetable oil most Jews use today.

Our Italian ancestors made latkes from ricotta cheese, which are now customary among Sephardic Jews. Called cassola, these latkes may have reflected details of the Story of Judith, in which she seduces her enemies with fresh cheeses as a means to help the Jews attain victory in their war against the Assyrian army. We can surmise that these lightly fried latkes were fried in olive oil since that was, and still is, the predominant oil used throughout the Mediterranean.

When dairy products became scarce and expensive throughout Europe, yeast-risen grain latkes became the custom. These latkes were made with buckwheat or rye flour, water, onions, and eggs and then fried in goose fat.

However, in Europe between 1830 and 1840, when grain prices skyrocketed, our great grandparents pivoted and, out of necessity, chose to make their Hanukkah latkes from potatoes, which were cheap and plentiful. And thus potato latkes, fried in vegetable oil, became an Ashkenazi Hanukkah tradition, brought to America with the wave of European Jewish immigrants in the late 1800s.

So here we are today, still making our latkes from potatoes and frying them in vegetable oil. But what about that extra virgin olive oil which plays such a major role in the story of Hanukkah, and in the significance of olives throughout Judaism?

Olives are one of the seven Species of Israel that are mentioned in the Torah (the others are wheat, bar-

Each species relates to our soul in a unique way. Olives represent foundation, and spiritually they are a symbol of peace. The dove who flew back to Noah’s Ark carried an olive branch to signify that the floods had subsided. The emblem EXTRA of the state of Israel is a menorah with olive RECIPE branches on either side.

Olive oil was also believed to have healing power, which we know today is scientifically proven.

Regarded as a “super food,” olive oil has antioxidants known to fight inflammation, improve circulation, boost your immune system, lower fasting blood sugars and insulin resistance with regard to diabetes, and promote healthy skin. In fact, a 2020 study by the American Heart Association found that eating more than a half tablespoon of olive oil a day may lower heart disease risk.

Now let’s go back to that traditional Hanukkah food: potato latkes fried in vegetable oil. Let’s be clear, nothing in the Torah or the Talmud requires us to fry any See MARGI LENGA KAHN on page 14B

Whole Wheat Olive Oil Orange Cake (I used this recipe to make one mini cake which I glazed, and six cupcakes which I iced. Directions for making my icing appears at the end of this recipe.*) INGREDIENTS:

Cake: 1 ½ 1 ½ ½ 1/4 2 ½ 1/4 ½ 2

c. unbleached all-purpose flour c. whole wheat flour, white or regular c. granulated sugar tsp. baking soda tsp. baking powder tsp. coarse kosher salt large eggs c. whole milk c. sour cream or whole milk yogurt c. extra virgin olive oil tsp. fresh, finely grated orange zest

Orange glaze: 2 c. powdered sugar 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract 1/4 c. freshly squeezed orange juice 1 tsp. fresh, finely grated orange zest DIRECTIONS:

Cake: 1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Oil and flour a 9x5x3” metal loaf pan.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together both flours, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt; set aside.

3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sour cream or yogurt, olive oil, and orange zest. Pour this mixture over

Mix vanilla extract into orange juice along with the grated zest, and then whisk it all into the powdered sugar until mixture is smooth. Pour glaze over warm cake, letting it drip down the sides. Let cool before slicing. *To make icing, beat together 8 oz. room temperature cream cheese and 4 tbsp. softened butter in a medium bowl. Add 2 tsp. finely grated orange zest and 2 cups powdered sugar. Mix on low speed until icing comes together. Spread icing onto cupcakes or put it into a pastry bag and pipe it onto the cupcakes. Sprinkle with colored sprinkles (gold or blue, perhaps), if desired. The icing can remain refrigerated for 3-4 days.

Roasted Salmon with Pepper Jelly and Fresh Oranges (Recipe adapted from “South of Somewhere,” by Dale Gray) INGREDIENTS:

Salmon: 1 lb. salmon fillet, pin bones removed 1 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil plus 1 tsp., divided 1 tsp. coarse kosher salt 1 tsp. smoked paprika (available in most grocery stores and at Penzey’s) 3 tbsp. apricot preserves or red pepper jelly 2 small garlic cloves, peeled and finely minced 1 tbsp. apple cider vinegar For garnishing: 2 large navel oranges 12 pitted castelvetrano olives (or kalamata olives) halved (optional) 1/4 c. thinly sliced fennel (optional) Fresh herbs, such as coarsely chopped parsley, cilantro, dill, mint, and/or chives Freshly ground black pepper, to taste 4 tsp. extra virgin olive oil DIRECTIONS:

reserved dry ingredients, folding the ingredients together gently until no flour is visible.

4. Pour cake batter into prepared loaf pan and bake for 55-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the loaf comes out clean.

5. Transfer cake, in pan, to a cooling rack.

After 20 minutes, loosen the sides of the cake with a thin sharp knife, and turn cake out onto a cooling rack. Immediately turn cake over so that the top is facing up.

3. In a small bowl, mix pepper jelly, garlic, and vinegar. Spread mixture evenly over salmon and roast for 12-15 minutes. Turn oven to broil and transfer salmon to higher rack.

Broil just until glaze begins to caramelize, about 1-2 minutes.

To garnish and serve: 1. Zest both oranges into a small dish. Place oranges onto a cutting board, stem side up.

Using a paring knife, remove peel and pith from oranges and discard. Slice each orange into 6 slices, then into halves quarters; set aside.

2. Slice salmon and place a serving onto each of 4 dinner plates. Top each serving with a pinch of orange zest, a few orange slices/ pieces, some of the olives, fennel (if usiing), and then fresh herbs. Grind fresh black pepper over fish, to taste, and drizzle with some extra virgin olive oil; serve.

Makes 4 servings. (Recipe can be doubled.)

Stephen Sondheim’s fairy tale mashup excels at intimate New Jewish Theatre

The New Jewish Theater is taking the unusual step of presenting “Into the Woods” in the round. The production is extraordinarily involving in the intimate setting of the Jewish Community Center’s Wool Studio Theater.

The musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine is a mashup of several classic fairy tales and one original story. The familiar characters include Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Jack of beanstalk fame. The new characters are a baker and his wife who are trying to undo a witch’s spell that has prevented them from having children.

Each plot thread arrives at a happy conclusion in Act 1, but the characters do not live happily ever after. In Act 2, they face a common danger when their earlier actions have dire, real world consequences. The characters must grow up to overcome the

existential threat.

The difference in tone between the show’s two acts has been controversial since the original production. The NJT staging emphasizes the continuity between the acts rather than the contrast.

From the start, director Robert Quinlan brings out the story’s darkness as well as its comedy. The drama benefits from the closeness of the actors to the audience in the staging in the round.

The superb ensemble takes advantage of

opportunities to make the production immersive. Sometimes the performers venture into the seating area and show they are aware of the audience. This toying with theatrical illusion foreshadows a second-act episode in which the characters turn on the narrator.

The seats are against three and a half walls in the black box theater. The set by C. Otis Sweezey reserves half of one wall for the musicians and a massive tree, the initial appearance of which is deceptive. When

the characters set out into the woods, the single tree is divided into a group of smaller trees. Three of them are wheeled away to different spots on the stage. Other important set pieces also are on wheels, simplifying changes in the setting.

On a stage where multiple activities can be going on at once, Jayson M. Lawshee’s lighting is a dependable guide to where the audience should be looking. The lighting See NJT, page 13B

Leonard Bernstein biopic details conductor’s dual loves: his wife and his music

The “Maestro” in the highly anticipated new biopic of that name is Leonard Bernstein, the groundbreaking JewishAmerican composer and conductor who became the first American conductor to lead a major American orchestra, as well as being an innovator, music educator, humanitarian and pop culture figure.

Bradley Cooper directed, co-wrote and stars as Bernstein in a film that covers his storied career but focuses more on his personal life, especially his long relationship with his wife, actress Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein (Carey Mulligan). Much of the film centers on their romance, marriage and family life raising three children, and her painful struggles with the composer/ conductor’s numerous affairs with men.

Cooper worked closely with the Bernsteins’ three children for this project, and also worked with conductor Yannick Nezet-Seguin to capture Bernstein’s conducting style.

There has been a lot of chatter about Cooper’s makeup choices to play Bernstein, particularly a prosthetic nose, but it is worth noting that Bernstein’s children are fine with that bit of makeup. The prosthetic does help make Cooper, who doesn’t particularly look like Bernstein, more convincingly play the much-photographed musical genius.

“Maestro” is visually gorgeous, with marvelous sets and period costumes. It starts out in black-and-white, with the 25-year-old Bernstein’s breakthrough debut as a conductor and then meeting his future wife, echoing the appearance of films of the era. The film switches midway to lush color as we reach the 1960s, and another breakthrough for Bernstein,

with the score for “West Side Story” making him a pop culture figure as well as a classical music giant.

The film opens with a joyous scene, as 25-year-old Lenny (as his family often called him) is on the brink of fame. The young assistant conductor gets the call to fill in for a guest conductor, who is ill, and leads the New York Philharmonic. The concert, which is broadcast, is Bernstein’s conducting debut and earns a rousing response from the audience and critical praise, catapulting him to fame.

With his music star now rising, Lenny meets Felicia Montealegre Cohn (Carey Mulligan), a Costa Rican-Chilean Jewish actress who was already a Broadway star.

The two embark on an intense romance, charmingly portrayed, and eventually marry.

Sarah Silverman plays Bernstein’s understanding sister Shirley while Brian Klugman plays composer Aaron Copland, one of Bernstein’s closest friends. Later in the film, Maya Hawke plays the Bernsteins’ eldest daughter Jamie.

Although the drama starts with Bernstein as an adult, dialogue and scenes reference his earlier life. Born near Boston as the son of Jewish Ukrainian immigrants, he didn’t grow up in a musical family. When Lenny was 10, he got his first chance to play a piano, when his Aunt Clara temporarily needed to store hers at his family’s apartment. He fell in love with the instrument, and when his businessman father refused to pay for lessons, not seeing music as a serious career, Lenny scraped up the money himself. Eventually, his father bought a piano after Lenny showed impressive natural talent.

Bernstein was a groundbreaker in getting classical music on TV and his famous young people’s concerts opened up classical music to many. While both are mentioned, their groundbreaking nature isn’t underlined, and much of his mentorship and Civil Rights work are left out.

Still “Maestro” is a moving film with an impressive cinematic style and strong performances, and it does convey of sense of what a pop culture star Bernstein was as well as a serious music one.

One of the great joys of this film is the music. We hear musical tidbits from “West Side Story,” of course, but there also are samplings of other popular works, along with the classics, and his crazy, wonderful overture to “Candide” plays over the end credits.

Perhaps the biggest highlight is the Ely Cathedral concert, where Cooper as Bernstein conducts the London Symphony Orchestra and a large choir in a stirring recreation performance of Mahler’s

Symphony No. 2. The scene was shot with the actual London Symphony Orchestra, recreating the whole performance on location, with Cooper actually conducting, a scene he prepared for several years.

Cooper does a fine job as Bernstein, not just in the dramatic parts but in his impersonation of the conductor at work, capturing the maestro’s movements and energy brilliantly. Mulligan also is excellent as a Broadway star who maintained her own career but whose personal life was marred by her husband’s many affairs with men.

Mulligan movingly conveys her emotional pain and struggles in a fine, nuanced performance.

“Maestro” is a beautifully made film, filled with wonderful music, about America’s first star conductor, who crossed over into pop culture fame as well, but the biopic is more about Bernstein’s personal life and marriage than some viewers might expect.

“Maestro” opens Friday, Dec. 8, at Landmark’s Plaza Frontenac Cinema and Chase Cinema, and will be available for streaming on Netflix on Dec. 20.

Young St. Louisans join in history-making rally

On Nov. 14, an estimated 300,000 Jews traveled to Washington, D.C. to support Israel in its war against Hamas, and to condemn Hamas’ egregious attack on Jews—particularly, the kidnapping of Israeli citizens.

The national mall was packed— there was hardly room to move.

Two percent of the entire Jewish population attended the rally.

Understanding the message of “Acheinu” added extra meaning to the singing.

“Acheinu kol beis Yisrael—it’s about our brothers,” Fruchter explained. “So when you’re hand in hand with your brothers, singing about your brothers who are b’shivya, in captivity, was a very impactful moment for me.”

Tragedy easily ignites short-term unity, but it’s more difficult to maintain that togetherness once the waters calm.

Hamas inflicted great pain on the Jewish people—but we will know we have won when we emerge a stronger, more unified Jewish people.

“The unity that is currently felt among the Jewish people—across all sects of Judaism—was expressed at the rally, by seeing all those people come together,” Fruchter said. “I really hope that when the war does end, and all the captives are freed, that the unity remains.”

If we keep our momentum going and remind ourselves that we all belong to klal Yisrael, that unity won’t leave us. Our teffilot, mitzvot and care for each other are not just a military strategy—they are the essence of the Jewish people.

“Jewish people will always stand together,” Dean said. “We will stand together to support one another, and to pray for one another, and no matter what, at the end of the day, we have each other’s backs. We are all one big family.”

Finding Jewish unity and strength at Nov. 14 rally

I’ll never forget Nov. 14, 2023. That’s the day I stood in the nation’s capital with nearly 300,000 Jewish people, many of whom traveled long distances to be in Washington, D.C. We stood together to support Israel, to stand up against antisemitism, and to call for the release of the hostages taken by Hamas on Oct. 7.

Strength in love can sometimes be more intimidating than strength in ferocity; it is frustrating for our enemies to see that nothing will break our spirit. There were no posters of hostages torn down and no calls for violence. This was simply peaceful, loving and motivated people who were determined to witness change.

One particular aspect of the rally that I liked was the selection of speakers.

Politicians from both sides of the aisle, actors, musicians and more advocates came together. Some of these voices even came from non-Jewish people. The unity was evident, through the repeated chants

A stranger, whose name I found out was Youssef, came up to me and asked if I wanted to put on tefillin and a yarmulke that he held. I started wondering if I was expected to give him money, but then he said, “Thank you for this. It’s a mitzvah for Israel.” Contrary to what I initially thought, I was doing this for him, not the other way around.

After saying a blessing with him, I felt satisfied on the inside. “Why does this make me feel good?” I asked myself. I don’t normally wear a yarmulke, and I didn’t even understand most of the words in the blessing. But then I realized that I didn’t have to feel the impact directly to understand the significance of what I did.

I put on tefillin to demonstrate my solidarity with Youssef and Judaism in general.

Even if that action didn’t mean much to me by itself, it meant something to him, which consequently then meant something to me. If I have the option to show my support for other people, I will jump at the opportunity to do so. The key idea is

that I didn’t have to know every word to feel every word. I didn’t understand every Hebrew word Youssef uttered, but I felt the weight his words carried.

Standing up for Judaism is more essential than ever. According to FBI Director Christopher Wray, the Jewish population (around 2.4% of America’s population) accounts for about 60% of religious-based hate crimes. The terrorism against Jewish people is incredibly alarming. Moreover, many antisemitic incidents occur on college campuses with educated, diverse student bodies. Hatred is openly on display, even at the most unlikely places, and we must step up to combat it.

I am incredibly grateful that I experienced the opportunity to showcase my Jewish pride at the rally. Several other examples on my trip, such as when the whole plane from St. Louis to D.C. sang “Hatikvah,” and when a bunch of us put our arms around each other to sing along at the rally, served as a meaningful reminder of how special our strength and unity are.

Students welcome Holocaust survivor for moving Q&A

On Tuesday, Oct. 24, motivational speaker and Holocaust survivor Sami Stiegmann visited St. Louis to speak to students and teachers at Ladue Middle School and Ladue Horton Watkins High School.

The event at the high school was in a question-and-answer format, with Stiegmann telling his story and the audience chiming in with questions. The session was moderated by the co-presidents of the Jewish Student Union (JSU) at Ladue, Audrey Roberts and me. The JSU leaders, along with club sponsor Alyson Levine, were in charge of planning and organizing the event, which was sponsored by Maryville University Hillel.

Roberts is a junior at Ladue and new to the district for the 2023-24 school year. But she has jumped right into a leadership role at JSU, volunteering to work on the Holocaust speaker event.

“I love working in collaboration with people like this, hearing their stories, learning [about different] experiences, so I just thought it’d be a really great opportunity,” Roberts said.

Roberts is also involved in leadership opportunities outside of JSU. She is a member of StandWithUs, an organization promoting education about Israel and

“I am very familiar with hosting programs, organizing events and things like that, so I think that’s also what made it really fun for me [because] this is something that I do frequently and I enjoy doing,” Roberts said.

In America today, antisemitism rates are up 388% largely due to the Israel-Hamas war, according to the Anti-Defamation League, making the world a dangerous

place for thousands of Jewish people.

Consequently, the need for education about Jewish history is becoming more important for young people.

“I think that this is an incredibly important event to have at every school because obviously a mass genocide is a very big event, but all the little steppingstones or building blocks that [can] lead to it are not so far off to experience in a high school,” Roberts said.

Levine, who has been the club sponsor of JSU at Ladue for five years, grew up without in-depth education on the Holocaust and believes in the relevance of education for people of all ages. “[We need to understand] how we can take the lessons from the Holocaust, as unfortunate and devastating as it was... and prevent something like that from ever happening again,” Levine said.

Another crucial facet of understanding the horrors of the Holocaust is connecting with the people willing to share their stories beyond what happened to them.

“I just tried to make an effort to get to know (a Holocaust survivor) as a person because truly they are so much more than just their story and their experience,” Roberts said.

Events that involve hearing a Holocaust survivor speak live about their outlook on life and answer questions about their past are a good way to spread education about Jewish history in schools, where the topic can be neglected.

“A lot of times when you’re learning about the Holocaust, it feels like a very far out idea because it’s something that I could never fathom experiencing in my lifetime,” said Roberts. “So hearing the story of someone who actually lived it and had repercussions and is still experiencing the long- term effects makes it so much more real. It really tugged at me a little more.”

Getting the facts is critical in understanding conflict with Hamas

The day of Oct. 7th was one that did not play out how I expected. What started off as a normal day for me as Jewish high schooler was flipped on its head when I awoke to the news that Israel was under attack and at war. It took a while for me to assess the gravity of the situation but with the news and graphic online videos of the attack I began to understand the conflict at hand.

I had spent many years at a summer camp that employed a large number of Israelis who came straight from the army to be a counselor at the camp. So in response, I messaged many of them asking if they were OK. I received messages in return that they were fine but getting ready to go defend their country.

The war spiraled, as some picked sides, while others stayed firmly in the middle, not taking a stance. As someone who is connected to my Judaism and many people of Israel, I took into account all the facts and concluded that Israel was in the right in this conflict. But taking this position sparked confrontations with people who supported the opposing view.

I wondered why a stance taken could lead to so much division, for myself and for others. Among many problems that persist in our society, one that stands out is the divide stemming from polarized opinions.

That has become evident with acts and threats of violence in the United States directed towards Arabs and Palestinians as well as towards Jews. A typical Jewish person is likely fed content and opinions via social media and their chosen news outlets justifying Israel in the conflict, while a typical Arab or Palestinian is fed content that leads to them standing with Palestine and in extreme circumstances, with Hamas.

In our society, people are inclined to believe whatever they hear. People continuously choose ignorance and continue to ignore facts. This is demonstrated in the frightening amount of people in the United States who don’t just support Palestine, but support and justify Hamas.

The narrative that Palestinians were just

uprooted from their homes and are entitled to them back is a clear-cut example of stretching the truth. At the end of World War II, after 6 million Jews (over a third of the Jewish population at the time) were killed, the United Nations promised both Israel and Palestine a state.

Palestinian leaders rejected this solution and refused to recognize Israel as its own state. Israel then was forced to hold its own and carve out alliances with the other Middle East nations.

On Oct. 7, Palestinians led by the terrorist organization Hamas attacked Israel violently. They murdered more than 1,000 Jewish civilians and took more than 200 as hostages.

Since that day, Israel has called on their military forces to retrieve the hostages and do their best to rid the world of Hamas ter-

rorists. Hamas has countered by hiding behind civilians, lying about death totals, bombing their own hospitals and setting up headquarters underneath a hospital.

The United States made the logical choice to side with one of its closest ally and the only democracy in the area, which is facing a massive threat of terrorism and is surrounded by countries that have an extensive history of hatred towards them.

How can people know of this and side with Hamas? The answer is they don’t.

People are being fed lies, which they are inclined to agree with, without questioning the validity of what they hear.

This has then prompted numerous attacks on Jews throughout the United States. Jews today are forced to proceed with caution wherever they go, as any Jewish person among us could be next in

line for an anti-Jewish attack.

For the good of society, opinions need to be presented as opinions and facts need to be presented as facts. When the facts are covered up by ignorance, people can obtain radical opinions based on what they think are facts. When this happens people get hurt, which is evident by the antisemitic attacks on Jews throughout the United States.

People need the facts before things spiral out of control, as the conflict becomes even more divisive and attention-garnering. The answer to what’s going on in the United States stemming from this war isn’t violence or hatred, it’s understanding, empathy and facts.

The intimate setting helps the splendid ensemble achieve remarkable cohesiveness. Almost all the actors have more than one part. Phil Leveling gives highly individual performances in three very different roles: the wolf, the mysterious man and Cinderella’s stepmother.

Matthew Cox puts striking contrast into

his portrayals of the sweet but foolish Jack and the snooty, officious steward.

Kevin O’Brien and Molly Wennstrom bring revelatory tension to the relationship between the baker and his wife. Sarah Gene Dowling turns in a commanding portrayal of the witch. Her account of why the baker and his wife are infertile is uncommonly easy to understand at Dowling’s moderate tempo.

Kristen Joy Lintvedt tellingly depicts Cinderella’s emotional growth during the show. Aliyah Jacobs is full of spirit as Little Red, while Victoria Pines’ portrayal of Jack’s mother shows how dealing with her

difficult son has worn her down.

Sarah Wilkinson affectingly portrays Rapunzel’s many sorrows. Matt Billings and Kevin Corpuz are charming but vain and self-serving as princes. Nisi Sturgis’s menacing portrayal of the giant justifies the terror experienced by the other characters.

At intermission on opening night, I heard another attendee say Sondheim should have ended “Into the Woods” after Act 1. After seeing this NJT production, I’m happier than ever that he did not.

food on Hanukkah. And if you are tied to tradition, which most of us are, frying your latkes in extra virgin olive oil would be truer to the holiday story.

Furthermore, why not showcase extra virgin olive oil in more than latkes? You might consider a delicious salmon entrée or an olive oil cake. (See my recipes below.) Or make an olive oil salad dressing for a special salad of arugula, sliced apples, sliced fennel, snipped dates, and toasted walnuts.

To make the dressing, whisk together 4 tablespoons of your best olive oil, 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar, 1½ teaspoons honey or date syrup, 1 tablespoon minced fresh shallot, ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard, and salt and fresh ground black pepper, to taste. So delicious and so healthy.

You could even use a premium extra virgin olive oil as a dip for your bread or challah. To add a little extra pizzaz, season the

olive oil with some za’atar, the Middle Eastern seasoning made from sumac, thyme, oregano, cumin or coriander, and sesame seeds. Add a dash of salt to the mixture to elevate its flavor.

While you can still lightly fry your latkes in extra virgin olive oil, which has a higher smoking point than other olive oils, baking them is easier, healthier, and makes for an easier clean-up. Be sure, though, to save your best extra virgin olive oils for drizzling or finishing. Two of my favorites are Partanna Sicilian Extra Virgin Olive oil, and Graza “Drizzle” Extra virgin Olive Oil. Finally, while we tend to look back centuries—or even millenniums—to honor the deep Jewish traditions of olive oil, those traditions live on in surprising ways, including the iconic cartoon character Popeye created by the Jewish artist Elzie Segar in 1929.

And who was Popeye’s belove girlfriend?

None other than Olive Oyl. Happy Hanukkah!

Crisp Oven-Baked Latkes INGREDIENTS:

1 lb. russet potatoes, peeled and quartered 1 ½ lbs. sweet potatoes, peeled and quartered 1 small onion, peeled and quartered 3 large eggs 1 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil, plus extra for muffin pans ½ tbsp. coarse kosher salt Fresh ground black pepper, to taste Cooking spray (I use olive oil cooking spray) Applesauce, sour cream, or Greek yogurt, for topping DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees, convection if you have it. Position a rack in the center of the oven. Using a hand grater or the grater disc of a food processor to grate potatoes and onions.

Transfer to a large bowl and, using your hands, pick up mounds of the mixture and squeeze over the sink to remove excess moisture. Place back into bowl and set aside.

2. In a small bowl, whisk together eggs, 1

tbsp. extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper. Add this mixture to bowl of grated potatoes and onion and mix thoroughly with a slotted spoon; set aside.

3. Spray the cups of 2, 12-cup muffin pans with cooking oil. Place 3/4 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil into bottom of each cup. Place muffin pans into pre-heated oven for 5 minutes.

4. Carefully remove 1 of the muffin pans and set it onto a cooling rack. Using the slotted spoon, scoop about 1/2-3/4 c. mixture, and push it against the side of the bowl to squeeze out excess liquid. Fill each of the muffin cups three-quarters full, and lightly spray the tops of each one with some cooking spray. Carefully place back into oven. Repeat with remaining muffin pan. Bake latkes for about 15-18 minutes, or until crisp and golden on top.

5. Place pans on a cooling rack and carefully cut around and under each latke to lift it onto a pan lined with foil paper. (Latkes can be made a few hours in advance.)

6. Just before serving, pop pan of latkes into a 350-degree oven to reheat and re-crisp.

Makes 24 latkes.
