Sounding in the New Year A community Kabbalat Shabbat and tashlich ceremony was held on the banks of Creve Coeur Lake on Fri., Sept. 30. The event was hosted by the St. Louis chapter of the Israeli American Council, Shevet Keshet (Israeli Scouts), the J and PJ Library. The event included a potluck dinner, preceded by the tashlich, where dozens of people cast their sins, symbolized by casting bird seed into the water. Coming soon: Couturier, ‘Trash or Treasure’ and more The hunt is on This time of year, some people like to hunt elk, others turkey, still others, deer.

Me? I like to hunt bargains. And I can think of few bargain-shopping experiences that get my adrenaline pumping more than the National Council of Jewish Women’s Couturier sale. It features racks upon racks of high-quality designer men’s and women’s clothing and accessories at discount prices. I get chills just thinking about it.

If you prefer first dibs of the merchandise, you can pay to attend the sale Wednesday, Oct. 19, before it officially opens to the public. The $50 VIP ticket that lets you in that day from 1-4 p.m. is already sold out, but a limited number of $10 tickets for 4-8 p.m. is available on a first-come, first-served basis. To secure a spot, I suggest lining up in front of the Resale Shop at 295 N. Lindbergh Blvd., by 2:30, 3 the latest. (I’ve learned from experience.)

Starting Thursday, Oct. 20, entry to the sale is free. It continues that day and Friday, Oct. 21, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 22, all leftover Couturier designer merchandise and anything else in the store is 25% off.

How much is that garage sale find really worth?

You might remember that in January 2020, not long before the world essentially shutdown because of the COVID pandemic, the Mirowitz Center held an event called “Trash or Treasure.”

You could bring whatever item(s) you wanted to have appraised in the hopes of learning if it was worth a small fortune, or at

least a lot more than what you originally paid for it.

Mirowitz Center is once again hosting this event, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, at 8 Millstone Campus Drive, with knowledgeable appraisers from the Kodner Gallery on board to evaluate your treasures. Their representatives will accept items to be appraised in four categories: art, books, collectibles and jewelry.

To attend, participants must register online in advance at http://bit.ly/Register_ MirowitzCenter and reserve one-hour time slots from 9 a.m.-noon or call 314-432-1610 (ext. 1710). Each participant can bring up to two items to be appraised per time slot — the first item is $20; the second is $10.

Proceeds from “Trash or Treasure” will benefit the Mirowitz Center, which provides housing, health services, classes, entertainment and other resources to seniors in the Jewish community.

Honorary chairs are Helene Mirowitz and Gloria Spitzer, and the two chairs are

Bonnie Solomon and Betsy Mehlman.

The committee that planned this event also is selling tickets for special “treasure hunt” prizes, and you don’t need to be present to win.

Walk for a reason The weather promises to be beautiful this weekend, so why not get out and walk? Longtime rabbi will retire from B’nai Amoona, become CEO of JCC in Cleveland in early 2023

Rabbi Carnie Shalom Rose is retiring from his rabbinic position at Congregation B’nai Amoona to become the CEO of the Mandel JCC in Cleveland. He is scheduled to begin a planned sabbatical after Yom Kippur on Oct. 6 and assume his new job sometime in early 2023.

“Rabbi Rose has been an integral part of this congregation for 18 years,” said Jeff Singer, president of B’nai Amoona, adding that many congregants were “shocked” upon learning the news in an email letter he sent to them Friday.

“There are so many things about him that will be missed — his friendship and the interpersonal relationships he forged with congregants, his wisdom, messages and teachings from the bimah, his teaching in all the classes that he led,” Singer said. “We’ve been spoiled because you’re not going to find another bimah rabbi quite like Rabbi Rose.”

But, added Singer, he and the congregation’s lay leaders feel confident that the remaining clergy — Rabbi Jeffrey Abraham, Cantor Sharon Nathanson and Rabbi Neal Rose, who is Carnie Rose’s father and serves as senior rabbinic scholar — will continue to successfully lead the 140-year-old Conservative congregation and “exceed the needs of the congregation spiritually, educationally and communally.”

Singer noted that the leadership and clergy were already poised for Rose to begin a 10-month sabbatical in October.

“Right now, because we were set up for (Rose) to go into a sabbatical, we plan to keep the status quo. We really are lucky to have the clergy team we do, who have

That said, he added that Rose’s departure is “especially concerning for a lot of our older congregants who have had a number of life challenges that they were able to discuss with (Rabbi Rose).”

“They are worried about losing a great leader and rabbi,” said Singer. “They wish him and his family well, of course. They watched their four kids grow up here and regard them as part of the fabric of our community.”

Rose understands that and expressed

his own sadness about leaving. But he said he’s taking the job in Cleveland because he felt after 18 years at B’nai Amoona, the time had come to do something different.

“It’s a matter of something different and the opportunity to use parts of myself that I haven’t had a chance to utilize in a long time — management, the CEO element, being responsible for a bigger staff and budget, a wide variety of programming that goes beyond what a synagogue normally does,” said Rose, who is 55 years old. “I’m not going to pursue another pulpit. This is radically different.”

Cleveland has a larger Jewish community than St. Louis, with roughly 85,000 Jews compared to 60,000. In his new position, Rose will oversee a budget roughly five times that of B’nai Amoona’s and a staff of about 200.

He said while he considered looking for opportunities in Los Angeles and New York, he and his wife, Paulie, feel “a real draw to the Midwest — this is our place.”

“If I were staying in synagogue, there is nowhere else in the world I’d want to be than B’nai Amoona,” said Rose, whose four children are grown (the youngest is a freshman at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland).

“This is the Garden of Eden of congregational jobs. I’m not leaving with any malice or anger,” Rose said. “The only sadness I really have is that I love the people here deeply and I’m going to deeply miss the families and the relationships.”

Rose said some congregants have asked if he will officiate at their wedding — or funeral — so this is not a final goodbye.

“I’ll be coming back and forth,” Rose said. (In addition to his congregation, Rose’s parents, two of his wife’s sisters and two of the couple’s children, students at Washington University, are in St. Louis.)

He said he feels he is leaving the congregation in good hands with the remaining clergy and lay leaders.

“They were primed and ready for me to go away for 10 months,” he said. “It is a dramatic shift, but this group of people is more than capable. It’s an experienced, loving, dedicated group.”

Rose’s plans for his sabbatical are to travel and to write a book about Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel.

“I hope to still write the book,” he said, “though I’m not sure it will get done as quickly as I thought.”

In 2010, B’nai Amoona awarded Rose a 21-year contract. Rose is only the fifth senior rabbi to serve B’nai Amoona, one of the nation’s largest Conservative congregations. Roughly 715 families belong.

Singer said while there is sadness and some disappointment over Rose’s decision, the overwhelming sentiments are gratitude and appreciation.

“We want to thank him and his family for the service he has provided to us for 18 years. It is something that is going to be missed and is not easily replaced, and that’s what we are going to be focused on,” Singer said. “As we start this new year, B’nai Amoona will continue to move forward. I think what the congregants want to say is thank you for all your years of service and for everything you have done for our congregation and our families.”

Retiring cemetery director looks back on career helping people in mourning

United Cemetery Association leader is stepping down at year’s end

Barry Needle will retire at the end of this year as executive administrator at Chevra Kadisha Cemetery and the United Cemetery Association, which includes B’nai Amoona Cemetery and United Hebrew Cemetery.

Needle, 79, started working for Chevra Kadisha in 1976. In 1999, Chevra Kadisha joined with B’nai Amoona and United Hebrew cemeteries — all of which are located less than a mile apart on North and South Road in University City — to form the United Cemetery Association.

Needle has served as the organization’s director from the start. He has assisted many Jewish St. Louisans manage the loss of loved ones over the past 46 years.

Needle, who attends Young Israel of St. Louis, sat down the Jewish Light to discuss his legacy and post-career plans.

Barry Needle has been executive administrator of the United Cemetery Association since the organization’s founding in 1999.

Do you have any immediate retirement plans?

I’m going to enjoy my family. Our children are spread out in Israel, Baltimore and Chicago, and our daughter in Israel is coming to visit. I have a brother in Los Angeles and grandchildren all over. Thank G-d for Zoom! My niece organized a virtual meeting, so we’ve all been able to connect.

Any hobbies you may devote more time to?

Your job seems to require good organization skills. Does that describe your personality?

I’ve got ideas for volunteering and joining a gym. Since I won’t be walking cemeteries as much as I do now, I need to stay physically active. I also enjoy just walking

It needs work (laughs). Even though I’m retiring, there’s still lots to do. You’re getting calls from all over the place at once, and you’ve got to sort it out.

You’ve been described as caring and empathetic by your colleagues, which seems like it’s also necessary in your work.

You just need to be able to help people and know you’re helping them. Everyone handles things differently, and if I could help them through the situation, that was rewarding.

Are there any career highlights that you’re especially proud of?

It’s been gratifying to be able to help people when they’re facing serious problems. If in any way I could make their situation a little easier, that in itself is something I’m proud of.

News Tonight, the gala will feature Juju Chang, Emmy Award-winning co-anchor of ABC News “Nightline” and one of the most prominent Asian-Americans in broadcast news.

The annual event is the largest single fundraiser for Jewish Federation of St. Louis’ annual campaign, which raises $10 million each year to organizations dedicated to preserving and enhancing Jewish life across the globe and throughout the St. Louis region. In addition to supporting nearly 85 organizations, the Federation has raised more than $720,000 to help refugees of the Ukraine conflict. The event is hosted by the Federation’s Women’s Philanthropy.

“L’Chaim is an evening of celebration, community and giving,” said Laura Fields, Women’ Philanthropy Chair, in a statement. “We are thrilled to be back in person this year and to have Juju Chang share her story with our community.”

In addition to co-anchoring ABC News Nightline, Chang is also a regular contributor to “Good Morning America” and “20/20.” With the rise of hate crimes against the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community, Chang leveraged her platform to become a much-admired champion of social change. She made U.S. broadcast history co-anchoring the 2021 ABC News Live special, “Stop The Hate: The Rise In Violence Against Asian Americans.”

Chang converted to Judaism in 1995

after marrying her husband, Neal Shapiro.

She will share her journey to Judaism and Jewish identity, how she balances being a working mom with a job that takes her all around the world and raising three teen boys, her experiences as a journalist, and the intersectionality of being a woman, Jewish and Asian American.

Sid Salomon Jr., Blues first owner, to be among 10 inductees into new team Hall of Fame Enterprise Center.

On Feb. 9, 1966, St. Louis was awarded a National Hockey League franchise for an expansion team that didn’t even have an owner lined up. That void was soon filled by the late Sidney Salomon Jr. and his son Sid Salomon III, who came forward to purchase the franchise and its original venue, the art deco St. Louis Arena on Oakland Avenue. In October 1967, the team started its first season.

Now, Sid Saloman Jr. is to be among the first St. Louis Blues legends inducted into the new St. Louis Blues Hall of Fame. The team announced the news of the Hall of Fame’s creation and the first inductees on Monday, Oct. 3.

“The St. Louis Blues are one of the most storied franchises in the National Hockey League, a member of the expansion class of 1967, so our history is understandably rich with legendary players, coaches and executives,” said Blues President and CEO of Business Operations Chris Zimmerman. “The Blues Hall of Fame is an idea that is long overdue, but soon to become reality. It will honor those who have played a key role in sculpting our franchise and laid the foundation for building St. Louis into the powerful hockey market it is today.”

The inaugural class will be announced on Saturday, Oct. 15, when the Blues host the Columbus Blue Jackets to open the 2022-23 regular season at

Temple Israel will host 14th Annual Israeli Film Festival

Congregation Temple Israel is hosting its 14 t h annua l Israeli Film Festival on Sunday, Oct. 30 from 3:30 to 8 p.m. Guests will enjoy two Israeli films, Israeli-style refreshments during intermission and are welcome to attend one film or stay for both. This year’s films are “In Search of Israeli Cuisine,” which will be screened at 3:30 p.m. In this documentary, award-winning chef Michael Solomonov goes on a journey in Israel, profiling chefs, home cooks, farmers, vintners and cheese makers drawn from the multitude of cultures that make up Israel today — Jewish, Arab, Muslim, Christian and Druze. The film is 94 minutes, in Hebrew and English, with English subtitles. This film is suitable for middle school students and above.

an explanation. Naïm, a sensitive but aimless 20-year-old Palestinian living in Gaza, discovers the bottle and tries to answer Tal’s question by initiating an email correspondence. Their mutual suspicion soon develops into a tender friendship. The film

Our past and present stories connect, strengthen Jewish people In 5783, we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel

Just before his death, G-d allowed Moses to ascend Mount Nebo and view the land of Israel from a distance. Can you picture it?

An elderly Moses, in long white robes, leaning on a staff atop a mountain, content and looking out over the land G-d promised Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. I wonder, what Moses was thinking at that moment?

Could he have imagined the history that was to be created in the place that was laid out before him? In looking out over the land, could Moses have imagined that, centuries later, there would come exile and then a thousand plus years of wandering before returning home again?

Moments before ascending Mount Nebo Parashat Ha’azinu, Moses offers his last words to the Israelites: “Listen, remember the days of old, consider the years of ages past. Ask your parent, who will inform you, your elders, who will tell you:” (Deut. 32:7) Moses’s words in Parashat Ha’azinu remind us that the past plays an important part in our lived experience, that no matter where we are, we are connected to one another and to G-d through our shared experiences.

As American Jews, so often we focus on our own experiences, stories and history, and do not always see ourselves in the larger story of the Jewish people.

How many of us know our own family’s story of coming to America? It is likely that we know what our families created after arriving here, but do we truly know what they left behind and why?

So often, we forget because that is not the story we want to remember. And yet, it is a part of who we are. It is a part of

This year, 5783, we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel. What a milestone and miracle for all Jews! Moses’ words in Ha’azinu remind us that to celebrate, we must remember and tell the story of how we got to and are connected to this miraculous moment.

If we were to ask our parents and grandparents, what would they tell us?

Would they remember how they felt when the State of Israel was declared?

Would they remember how they felt in June 1967 or Yom Kippur 1973 when the

existence of Israel was in question?

What are the stories that we could share? Stories of Operations Moses, Joshua and Solomon, the 1984-91 airlifts of Ethiopian Jews to Israel.

Stories of seeing Israel’s prime ministers shake hands for the sake of peace, from Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat at Camp David in 1978, to Yitzhak Rabin and PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat in Cairo in 1994.

What stories could we tell to help us understand Israel and all its complexity while appreciating how far Israel has come in 75 short years? What stories could we tell that would ensure our collective connection to the Land of Israel?

For the sin we have sinned by making people feel unwelcome at synagogues

I have been shocked lately by the number of my friends who have left synagogues because of a pattern of unkind remarks from rabbinic and volunteer leaders. A Jew-by-choice belittled. A twenty-something shamed. A professional demeaned.

Jewish Twitter is full of accounts by Jews by choice or Jews of color who have been challenged, patronized or “othered” when they show up in Jewish spaces. Essayists lament that too many synagogues don’t seem welcoming or sensitive to single parents, or don’t accommodate people with disabilities.

Saying and doing hurtful things is not just ethically wrong, it’s destructive to organizations, and has no place in the sacred communities that congregations strive to be.

As any marketer will tell you, it is far cheaper to keep a customer than to acquire a new one — and synagogues can’t afford to alienate a single congregant. With the ranks of the unaffiliated growing, according to Pew’s 2020 study, synagogue leaders need to watch what they say to keep, we lc o m e and attract members.

The Pew study revealed that 7% of American Jews do not attend synagogue regularly because they “don’t Jeff Rubin is a feel welcome” while writer in the Baltianother 4% say more-Washington “people treat me area. like I don’t really belong.” During my dozen years as a Hillel professional we invested heavily in training staff to create environments that welcomed and engaged Jewish students of all backgrounds, regardless of how they looked, loved or worshiped. My own first encounter with Hillel when I was just a high school senior ended poorly: Visiting Boston University’s Hillel, I was so put off by a comment that I didn’t apply to the school.

Of course this is a problem as old as Judaism itself.

On the first day of Rosh Hashanah we read the story of Hannah, the distraught woman who came to the Tabernacle at Shiloh to pray for a cure for infertility. Eli the Priest, seeing her pray silently — heretofore an unknown practice — accused her of being drunk. The priest said to her, “How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Sober up!”

Hannah replied, “Oh no, my lord! I am a very unhappy woman. I have drunk no wine or other strong drink… I have only been speaking all this time out of my great anguish and distress.”

Prayer, memories, fears and a first trip to Israel

I never pray during silent prayer.

At age 6 or 7, while sitting beside my parents in a sanctuary full of worshippers bowing their heads and swaying back and forth, I convinced myself that too many people were talking to G-d at once. I reserved my prayers for the quiet moments in my life, often at home alone or right before bedtime.

Two decades later, I found myself standing at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, once again surrounded by worshippers praying and swaying. The wall overflowed with paper prayers inserted into its cracks, many of which slipped out and floated to the ground each time someone pushed a new prayer in. I shimmied my way into an open spot, pressed my hand against the stone and concentrated hard. As much as I wanted to have the spiritual experience so many describe from their first pilgrimage to Israel, I stood there unable to pray.

“There are too many people talking to G-d at once,” I thought to myself.

I prayed a lot in the quiet moments leading up to my first trip to Israel, a trip I had pushed off for many years mostly out of fear. I feared the headlines that I saw splattered across the news and social media. I feared the violence that could break out at any time in a country constantly at war.

Ever the indoorsy young lady, I feared that I might plotz on the hike up Masada.

But I had to go. My first pilgrimage to Israel, and the Birthright program in particular, seemed like a rite of passage. At this moment in my life — despite being older than the typical Birthright participant — I finally felt ready for it.

My experience in Israel was one killed in acts of war, violence soul-nourishing and exhausting, and terrorism. St. Louis ‘olim’ honored for contributions to Israel

I am often asked why Sandy Koufax is my favorite baseball player; after all, he retired two years before I was born. I guess for the same reason that I was rooting for Max Fried to win the last game of the 2021 World Series and cheered when Jacob Steinmetz was drafted in the third round by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

I take vicarious pride in the baseball exploits of members of my Jewish family.

It is that same feeling of kinship that saddens when I think about the 1919 Black Sox scandal and how Arnold Rothstein conspired to fix the World Series leading to the banishment of Shoeless Joe Jackson.

And how ashamed I was of Bernie Madoff’s fraud.

Nefesh B’Nefesh, the nonprofit organization that promotes and facilitates aliyah from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, recently announced the 2022 winners of the Sylvan Adams Bonei Zion Prize that recognizes outstanding Anglo olim (immigrants) who embody the spirit of modern-day Zionism by contributing in a significant way to the State of Israel. St. Louis, and in particular the St. Louis Jewish community, can and should be vicariously proud of the fact that St. Louis is well represented amongst the well deserving awardees:

Michael Oberlander was the chief philanthropy officer of Jewish Federation of St. Louis from 2016-2019. He and his family moved to Israel in 2019 after living in St. Louis for many years. He is still an avid reader of the Jewish Light. provide quality eye care, including treatment for and prevention of blindness and eye disease, to poor people in Ethiopia.

In 2014, the Hartstein children suggested going on “vacation” to volunteer in the Jewish community of Gondar, Ethiopia.

After seeing the abject poverty and lack of health care, Mo returned to Ethiopia the next year — and has been back more than a dozen times — to provide eye care to Ethiopians in need, including overseeing almost 1,000 sight-restoring cataract surgeries and treating more than 7,000 patients.

He has also brought 18 Ethiopian ophthalmologists to Israel for training. He

Pamela and Aba Claman: Community & Nonprofit Pamela Fox Claman made aliyah from St. Louis in 1987. Together with her husband, Aba, who made aliyah from California in 2005, she co-founded Thank Israeli Soldiers, a nonprofit dedicated to educating, embracing and empowering Israel’s soldiers from the beginning of their service through transition back to civilian life.

Picky kids? St. Louisan offers food prep tips from new cookbook

Dini Klein, a St. Louis native and Epstein Hebrew Academy alum, has a large online following, with 150,000 followers on Instagram. Klein specializes in sharing food prep tips for busy households. Her Prep + Rally website is popular among parents of picky kids.

On Sept. 6, Klein realized a longtime goal when she published a mass market comprehensive meal prep cookbook, naturally titled “Prep + Rally.” The book is available at Target and Amazon.

Klein, 33, offered a sneak preview and some tricks and tips for successful family cooking. *** Was writing the cookbook a helpful way of surviving the pandemic?

It was actually a perfect time because we were all stuck at home. It really was a joint collaboration with our whole family.

They taste tested every single recipe. They gave critiques. They were really along for the entire process, the celebrations, and the stress and the anxiety.

You devote a good part of the book to vegetarian recipes, which are an easy way to keep kosher. How do you avoid those dishes being bland?

I’m a big fan of adding citrus, adding fresh herbs, and making sure you’re seasoning properly, which a lot of people don’t do. I say, taste as you go and adjust as necessary.

Parents sometimes refer to their kids as not being adventurous eaters. Do you find parents can be reluctant to try different techniques because they think their kids won’t like something exotic?

I hear that all the time. And I always say, your kids are watching you eat. I’m constantly eating a big bowl of salad, even after dinner, and now my kids will come over and start nibbling at the salad, even though they weren’t going to eat it during dinner. Now that I’m eating it, now all of a sudden, they want it!

Another one of your tips is that a recipe is just a starting point and home cooks should feel free to improvise.

Yes, play with your food, have fun, do anything you like. Add some hot sauce or lemon juice and see what you like. There’s no one size fits all recipe. It depends on what your family likes. But I always give lots of tips and tricks on how to modify and make it work for everyone. And I think having that DIY component where everyone can really build their own meal and make it their own is super important.

When you get your winter holiday cards in December, some include a newsletter, letting you know what’s going on in the lives of friends and family from near and far. For the Jewish High Holy Days, I decided to craft a newsletter of my own to share what the Fenster Brown family is up to. Here goes: Happy New Year!

5782 was very good to us. Allow me to go into detail.

Our family is doing very well, and luckily the kids are still cute. The boys are doing outstanding in school even though they are 50% biologically mine.

Jeff, as always, proved his dedication as a hardworking, very involved father. He is also a supportive and loving husband, except for when he leaves the seat up. Jeff is a brilliant man. Not only does he flex his impressive mathematician skills on the job, he can transfer them to home use. For example, he is effortlessly able to tell me I’ve overspent money just by glancing at our credit card bill. It’s a gift to be able to crunch numbers in your head at lightning speed like that.

Leo, age 15, is so advanced he’s already started looking at medical schools. Truth

be told, he really just went to urgent care for potential strep throat, but I think it really sparked his interest in becoming a doctor. Well, it didn’t really spark his interest. He wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. But that shows his desire for optimal health, which is practically the same as wanting to help others improve their health.

He’s always been a really good hand washer, so I’m thinking general surgery is likely the specialty he will choose. His passion is baseball, and baseballs have stitches, so it really does add up when you think about it. Surgery it is!

Davis, age 16, seems to have an interest in media. He likes writing so much that he is always on his phone crafting words into various group text chains with his friends.

This shows his strength of keeping the public well-informed, so I’m thinking TV news might be where he lands. Now that he has his license, I notice he drives really fast, which will come in handy when he has to rush to the scene of breaking news. Imagine the stellar coverage he could provide of a high-speed police chase.

The grandparents are all doing well. They are a constant source of love and sugary treats. If

every ice cream shop in the greater St. Louis area were to close, you could find just as big a selection in the freezers at the grandparents’ homes.

Their sweets go beyond their street addresses. Grandma Marge keeps a buffet of candy and cookies in her car at all times, like a vending machine on wheels, in case anyone needs a snack between her house and the grocery store. Grammy Zelda carries a purse with a special name: Grammy’s Magic Purse. This treasure trove contains no keys, no money, no ID, just a candy variety wide enough to cure anyone’s sweet tooth no matter the season, their taste buds or their food allergies.

My friends are all doing well. Except for the ones who aren’t. A couple of them need to stop their yearslong habit of starting every voicemail like this: “Hi, it’s me …”

Several of them do this, so I never really know who it is leaving the message. I know what you’re thinking: “Check the caller ID.” Like I even know how to do that. This Columnist Amy Fenster Brown is married to Jeff and has two teenage sons, Davis and Leo. She volunteers for several Jewish not-for-profit groups. Fenster Brown is an Emmy Award-winning TV news writer and counts time with family and friends, talking and eating peanut butter among her hobbies.

year I was actually able to almost correctly identify up to two of them based on their voices. In 5783 I hope to improve on that by actually identifying two of them correctly based on their voices.

I made several key self-discoveries in 5782.

Parenting is not for the faint of heart.

Parenting teenagers is not for the faint of heart.

Shopping with the teenagers you parent is also not for the faint of heart.

I always prayed for dimples. I finally got them. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to choose where they showed up.

I learned the horrifying lesson that elastic has its limits.

I would be in great shape if it weren’t for food. And exercise. And society.

I have many half-written columns for the Jewish Light. I get stuck or realize the piece isn’t going anywhere. Some topics seem like a good idea, and it turns out they aren’t.

I have pledged again this year to never write a column about writer’s block. That’s the journalistic equivalent of giving up.

If I ever enter a pageant that has a talent portion, I’m just going to do laundry, because I’m really good at it.

Peace out, 5782. You were a good one.

Welcome, 5783. I loved the ’80s my first time around and, so far, this decade on the Jewish calendar is good, too.

‘Saving Freud’ details psychoanalysis founder’s almost fatal reluctance to leave his beloved Vienna ROBERT A. COHN EDITOR-IN-CHIEF EMERITUS

Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, inspired both adulation and condemnation during his career, both of which are true to this very day, 83 years after his death in London in 1939.

Freud, whose towering intellect inspired admiration from his fellow Germanic-Jew Albert Einstein, was so enamored with his beloved Vienna, that he stubbornly refused to leave even after Adolf Hitler merged Austria into Nazi Germany in the Anschluss in 1938.

In his riveting and richly detailed book, “Saving Freud: The Rescuers Who Brought Him to Freedom,” Andrew Nagorski, a distinguished journalist and author, chronicles the struggle of a small circle of his followers to persuade Freud to escape to London.

His reluctance to leave put his very life and those closest to him at risk.

In his opening chapter, “To Die in Freedom,” Nagorski describes how “250,000 people greeted Adolf Hitler when he appeared on the balcony of the Hofburg, Vienna’s imperial palace, to announce the elimination of a separate Austrian state.”

The formal merger of Austria, “the country of his birth,” into the the Third Reich, “was now a reality—and the crowd appeared deliriously happy,” Nagorski writes.

Nagorski describes the obsession over Austria that Hitler and Freud shared, which caused Freud to be “in denial” of the harsh reality of the Gestapo-enforced

Nazi brutality against Austrian Jews, which his wife Martha and beloved daughter-disciple Anna Freud clearly saw.

Anna Freud worked with close associates and admirers of her father’s to flee Austria while there was a slim chance that he could do so.

Nagorski states that “the center of Freud’s universe was Berggasse 19,” his home and office address,” where he and Martha had raised six children...and it was also where he saw his patients (and) wrote his essays and books.”

Even though Freud was “no stranger to political turmoil and antisemitism,” he was struggling with the cancer that had developed in his jaw as a result of his long addiction to cigar smoking,” and was acutely aware that his allotted time was running out,” caused him “to hope desperately to spend whatever was left in relative peace.”

Freud was among those Jews who naively believed that Vienna, which was home to composers like Gustav Mahler and Arnold Schoenberg, and writers like Stefan Zweig, would not savagely turn on its thriving Jewish community, according to Nagorski.

Vienna was also the city where Freud “transformed himself from an outsider who was often scorned by the medical establishment into the city’s widely acclaimed practitioner of his new science,” says Nagorski. “He was the king of his realm.”

Among the small circle who finally convinced Freud to flee Vienna to London were Ernest Jones, the official Freud biographer; Maria Bonaparte, the great grand-

by Andrew Nagorski; Simon & Schuster; 336 pages; $28.99. niece of Napoleon and a former patient; William C. Bulitt, a U.S. diplomat, also a former patient; and Max Schur, Freud’s personal physician, who delayed his own escape from Vienna until Freud was safely in London.

It was only after Freud’s beloved daughter and caregiver was traumatized by the Gestapo, that Freud accepted his visa to London, where arrived on June 6, 1938.

He died there on Sept. 23, 1939, only weeks after Hitler invaded Poland to start World War II in Europe.

“Saving Freud” is a must read for anyone interested in biography and history, Nagorski shows how one of the brightest minds of modern history could be lulled by wishful thinking and denial of Hitler’s all-out war against his fellow Jews nearly cost him what was left of his life.

Chewy and sweet, the bialy comes to St. Louis

Bialy lovers, your wait is over. St. Louis has a legitimate South Florida-style version of the oniony roll, available from Breadsmith at 10031 Manchester Road in Warson Woods.

The bialy is similar to a bagel only in that it is round and chewy. However, it doesn’t have a hole in the middle. Instead, there’s a depression, which is filled. Bagels are boiled, then baked; bialys are just baked.

Breadsmith owner Duane Johnson says they’ve been a popular item so far.

“It’s not a special, we plan on continuing to make them,” Johnson said. “It’s a great recipe. And I think the secret is that the onions are freshly sauteed here in the bakery with a little bit of seasoning and a little bit of pepper, and so that really makes it.

And then the bialy itself, the dough is really a great flavor.”

The bialy was brought to the United

States by Polish Jewish immigrants in the late 1800s and became a breakfast staple in New York. It’s named for the town of Bialystok, Poland. Bialystock is the sur-

name of Zero Mostel’s greedy Broadway producer character in Mel Brooks’ “The Producers.” The bialy also got some attention in pop culture as one of Tony Soprano’s favorite treats on “The Sopranos.”

Until recently, real deal New York-style bialys were tough to find in the Midwest.

That’s because the bialy has a very short shelf life. Shipping them around the country doesn’t really work. They’re best eaten the same day they’re baked.

Johnson said Breadsmith sources yellow onions, which rest in the center indentation.

“We just add some pepper and saute them in olive oil,” he said. “That brings out the natural sweetness in onions. And I’ve been putting poppy seeds on top before I put the onion on. It just gives it a little contrast, which is traditional for a bialy, as well. There is yeast and salt and olive oil and just a little pinch of sugar. And it does differ quite a bit from a from a bagel.”

Breadsmith is a kosher bakery, certified by the Vaad Hoeir. Bialys are available every Friday and Saturday while supplies last.

Three movies worth seeing and ‘Celebrity Jeopardy’

“Bros,” which opened in theaters on Sept. 30, has been heralded as the first mainstream Hollywood movie to feature gay men as the lead characters in a romantic comedy. The film was co-written by comedian BILLY EICHNER, 44, and he co-stars.

The entire cast, except for a few celebs who play themselves, identify as a member of the LGBTQ community. “Famously” gay HARVEY FIERSTEIN, 68, has a supporting role. BEN STILLER, 56, and DEBRA MESSING, 54, have cameo roles as themselves. The film got mostly good reviews, Capsule plot set-up: Eichner plays Bobby, a 40-year-old Jewish New Yorker who hosts a popular LGBTQ podcast. He has spent most of his life hooking up instead of looking for long-term commitment. That is until he meets athletic CrossFit jock Aaron at a club. They hit it off, start seeing each other but agree to not commit to any sort of relationship.

The film was produced by JUDD APATOW, 54, a master of the rom-com, and it was co-written and directed by NICHOLAS STOLLER, 46. Stoller’s films

(as a writer and director) include “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” “Get Him to the Greek,” and “The Five-Year Engagement.”

Stoller and his wife of 17 years, novelist FRANCESCA BELBANCO, 48, co-created and co-wrote “Friends from College,” a Netflix series that ran from 2017-2019. The couple have three children. Her father is NICHOLAS DELBANCO, 80, a highly esteemed novelist and prose writer. He has held many top academic posts. vvv “Celebrity Jeopardy” premiered on Sunday, Sept. 25, on ABC. New episodes air on Sundays at 8 p.m. The host is MAYIM BIALIK, 46.

Twenty- seven contestants compete in the “the first round” (three to a game). The show’s policy is not to release the name of contestants until two weeks before their episode airs. (A few celeb names have been leaked. I know that actor/writer B.J. NOVAK, 44, will compete. I just don’t know when.)

The first game (9/25) featured three, non-Jewish celeb players. Simu Liu, a Canadian actor, won the first game and he advances to a playoff-round. The other two “went home.”

Here’s the capsule plot: Three friends meet in Amsterdam during the 1910s and form a pact to protect each other “no matter what.” Fast forward to the 1930s and the friends — a doctor (Christian Bale), an attorney (John David Washington) and a nurse (Margot Robbie)—are falsely accused of murder and are forced to seek the truth behind the crime.

Russell, the always-secular son of a Jewish father and an Italian Catholic mother, has written and directed nine films since 1994 and the last seven were hits. The biggest hits were “The Fighter,” “Hustle,” and “Silver Linings Playbook.”

What exactly is ‘artistic appropriation’?

viewers into believing they are looking at something unique, appropriation hinges on the ability of the viewer to recognize the original source of the image and all of its connotations.”

Gemmell writes that “Appropriation reached its apogee in the 1980s, with artists such as Sherrie Levine, Barbara Kruger, and Richard Prince challenging the notion of artistic originality altogether by emphasizing the act of borrowing existing images itself.”

Shepard Fairey, who is involved in the street art scene and is most known for his

iconic poster of Barack Obama with the word “Hope,” wants to make art accessible to the people. He believes in using any means to connect with the public.

There have been numerous court cases dealing with art appropriation. One very famous case dealt with Jeff Koons in Rogers vs Koons. Koons has been sued many times, but this one is still constantly discussed. Koons was sued after he appropriated a photograph taken by Art Rogers of two people holding a bunch of puppies.

Koons made a sculpture of puppies and changed the color of them into a bright blue. A 1992 ruling rejected his fair use/ parody defense and the case remains one of the most noteworthy court cases involving modern art.

This information, which came from a list of court cases of appropriated art on artlyst.com, also talks about Marcel Duchamp’s “Fountain” (1917). Duchamp submitted a urinal that he had purchased in the showroom of a company J. L. Mott Iron Works for an art society exhibition.

And then there is cultural appropriation, which is another subject, but has a certain commonality with artistic appropriation.

A lot of musicians with wide appeal today have been accused of cultural appropriation, including major pop stars like Madonna, Gwen Stefani and Miley Cyrus.

Critics say these artists/musicians often borrow from Native American, Black and Asian cultures and claim the music as their own.

There is a somewhat apocryphal quote, often attributed to Oscar Wilde or T.S. Eliot, that states: “Talent borrows; genius steals.”

Art museums and articles on art are constantly using the term “art appropriation,” so what does that really mean?

To appropriate is to take possession.

Appropriation artists deliberately copy images to take possession in their art.

They are neither stealing or plagiarizing, nor are they passing off images as their own. A lot of folks don’t really understand the meaning of this process.

Mirowitz ‘tashlich’ teaches kids environmental ‘teshuvah’

Students at Saul Mirowitz Jewish Community School on Sept. 30 put a unique spin on the Jewish tradition of tashlich.

The custom involves going to a nearby body of water and casting breadcrumbs or birdseed, symbolic of casting one’s sins from the past year. This year’s version at

Mirowitz was an “upside-down tashlich,” in which classes picked up trash throughout the campus.

The alternative tashlich was fitting because it promotes healing the environment, said Raquel Scharff-Anderson, head of school.

“One of the things we focus on here is environmental justice,” she said. “We must make sure that we take care of our environment, and that’s an important part of

being Jewish and what we teach here.”

Repentance via casting stones is a common tradition, but it’s not universally popular. A number of learned rabbis dislike the practice because it could be interpreted as a form of magic. Further, there is concern that the tashlich ritual as atonement undermines the concept of teshuvah, said Rabbi Scott Slarskey, Mirowitz director of Jewish life.

“It’s a really interesting tradition that

probably started sometime in the 13th century,” Slarskey said. “It’s been somewhat controversial because it came not from rabbis, but from folk tradition. Part of what’s beautiful about the ritual is that we do it yearly, so we get into a rhythm for the kids, which is nice. We go down to a body of water and cast stones into the water and pretend that we’re throwing away the

“I think there’s a power to that, but we wanted to build something that really walks the kids through the steps of teshuvah, of repentance, and that’s what this is going to do, first by talking about it and framing it, and then giving them a chance to do some work to make things better and reflect upon the impact of it.”

The upside-down tashlich event began with Slarskey blowing the shofar and explaining the objective to students. Then, students donned rubber gloves and combed the grounds for loose trash. Afterward, the collected rubbish was weighed to gauge the impact. The results: 39.75 pounds of trash collected. Of that total, 15.5 pounds were deemed “Mirowitz trash,” and the remaining 24.25 pounds came from outside. It was likely windblown trash that landed on the grounds.

According to Avra Arnow, 9, the project was a good lesson.

“It showed us you don’t have to just throw stuff away — you can pick things up, too,” she said.

She fought her cancer diagnosis with the same grit and will with which she approached all aspects of life. Born on October 8, 1938 in the Bronx, NY, Judy is predeceased by her beloved husband, Gerald Medoff, her parents, Nathan and Ruth Zuckerman, and her brother Gerald Zuckerman, all of whom she loved beyond measure. She is survived by her sons, Benjamin (Alisia St. Florian) and Nathaniel (Sherri Berger) and her grandchildren, Julia, Alex, Jonah and Jacob.

Judy and Jerry met in New York, while he was studying at Columbia University and she at Barnard College. After moving to St. Louis for Jerry to attend medical school at WashU, they headed to Boston where Judy completed her Ph.D. at Brandeis University before returning to St Louis, the city these two New Yorkers would call home for life.

Judy spent her career as a distinguished Professor of Biology at Saint Louis University.

Her love of science was perhaps only superseded by her devotion to her students as evidenced by the myriad of students invited to attend all Medoff family holidays and celebrations. The A Monument Dedication For

As a result of being orphaned at a young age, Stuart dedicated himself to creating a life full of love and happy memories for his family. He was often described as a phoenix, because he always rose above the obstacles that life presented. He loved salty food, pickles and his wife Bren. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all those whose lives he touched.

Above all, Judy was fiercely loyal to her family and friends. She was the real deal as they say, as genuine and humble as they come, firmly rooted in her Bronx pedigree. For her kindness, she was blessed with a group of friends, the “girl squad” as her family later referred to them, that enveloped her with love. Through Jerry’s illness as well as her own, Judy’s friends showed devotion in so many immeasurable ways. For this, she was eternally grateful.

Those who she has left behind will remember Judy’s intellectual curiosity and insatiable desire for learning and knowledge. Her pile of New York Times, never to be discarded until every last word was absorbed, is legendary. Any museum visit required at least half a day because Judy could not pass by a single work without reading its full description and absorbing its every nuance. Her decades long membership in the Shir Ami singing group brought Judy immeasurable joy, both through the music and heritage, and through her dear friends with whom she sang. Judy was a prolific artist and enjoyed her classes at St. Louis Community College, especially in her retirement years. She, of course, formed friendships with her classmates and instructors and became deeply involved in their lives.

There is hardly a single left-leaning charity that Judy did not support nor a political cause that she did not have a strong opinion about.

Still, her love of people crossed party lines and she was always able to find connection. We celebrate Judy’s life and may her memory be a blessing to all.

Commentary: For the sin we have sinned by making people feel unwelcome at synagogues CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9 “Then go in peace,” said Eli, “and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of Him.” What if Hannah couldn’t muster the strength to defend herself and simply walked out of the Tabernacle — and out of Judaism? What if Eli did not have the compassion to correct himself? Would Hannah’s son, Samuel, have been raised to become a Jewish leader recognized by the three Biblical faiths as a prophet? How would Eli’s thoughtless remark have changed history?

The rabbis recognized the toxicity of insults and cited such remarks as a transgression in one of the oldest elements of the Yom Kippur service, the confessional, or Vidui. During the Vidui, worshippers strike their breasts and acknowledge that they have “smeared” others, “dibarnu dofi.” Medieval commentator Rashi says the word “dofi” means “slander” and that it derives from “casting off” — as if by definition defamation leads to alienation. One prayerbook perceptively renders the phrase as, “We have destroyed” — a reputation, a relationship, a communal bond.

Jewish literature is full of guides to proper communication and avoiding evil speech, or “lashon hara” — from the Psalmist’s admonition, “Guard your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceitfully,” to the Talmudic “Let the honor of your friend be as dear to you as your own,” to Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan’s masterwork, the “Sefer Chofetz Chaim,” to Rabbi Joseph Telushkin’s excellent book, “Words that Hurt, Words that Heal.”

But how do congregations turn wise words into action?

Linda Rich, a New York-based leadership coach who counsels synagogues and nonprofits, regards respectful communication as a core behavior for a successful congregation, and a congregation that lives the Jewish values it espouses.

Discussion and disagreement are the signs of a healthy group, but in the Jewish context they should be civil and “l’shem shamayin,” for the advancement of sacred work, not for other motives.

She recommends that volunteers and staff study the principles that are fundamental to Jewish life, and sign a covenant to uphold them. When individuals fail to do so they should be reminded politely, clearly and directly that they are a valued member of the congregation, but this behavior is unacceptable. Try to be positive: Point out that they can be even more effective leaders if they watch what they say and adjust their approach. The congregation should sponsor periodic surveys or other forms of evaluation to determine how well the group is fulfilling its duties and covenants.

On Yom Kippur we reflect on our personal shortcomings but we atone as a group. We do not seek forgiveness “for the sin that I have committed through my words,” but “for the sin that we have committed through our words.” Our individual words have collective impact. The High Holidays provide a golden opportunity to rethink how those words affect others and to take steps to change as individuals and congregations.

Asher Fredman: Young Leadership Fredman, who made aliyah from New York in 2008, serves as the director for Israel at the Abraham Accords Peace Institute, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to strengthening and expanding the Abraham Accords. He is also the founder of the Israeli-Emirati Forum, a grassroots platform to bring together Israelis, Emiratis and Bahrainis from diverse backgrounds, and he is a fellow at the Kohelet Policy Forum.

Fredman served for nine years in the Israeli government — as chief of staff to Israel’s minister of strategic affairs, as senior coordinator for international affairs at the Ministry of Strategic Affairs, and in the National

Communications Directorate of the Prime Minister’s Office.

While Fredman may not be St. Louis born and bred, his paternal grandparents, Aaron and Ruth (z’l) Fredman and a large part of his extended family are and were stalwart members of the St. Louis Jewish community, founding and supporting shuls, day schools and the Torah M’Tzion Kollel. Ruth Fredman, in particular, was passionate in her support of the creative arts and of women celebrating their Jewish heritage. That is one reason why her family founded the Ruth Fredman Bat Mitzvah Program to help girls develop their identities as Jewish women.

Each of these awardees should rightly feel proud for all that they have accomplished. And, as one of our sages (Rabbi Isaiah Di Trani, c. 1185-1250) pointed out, dwarfs who stand on the shoulders of giants see farther than the giants themselves. Each of these awardees is a giant standing on the shoulders of the even greater giants.

And as their families share in the pride, so should the St. Louis Jewish community.
