For those of you who know me, you likely know I tend to challenge the status quo. My goal as Chair of STLE Chicago is to encourage this mentality within our section. Thankfully, I’m surrounded by committee members who have already begun to embrace this mindset. With that said, you can expect to see a variety of changes within the section this year. You’ll see things like:
• The ability to register for multiple technical meetings at once (Did someone say discount!?)
• Technical Meetings that venture outside of our normal content and geographical radius (Milwaukee, here we come!)
• Scholarships that are available to students in STEM, not just tribology (Who knew this wasn’t the case before!?)
• Webinars that enable additional knowledge exchange (Nerding out is fun!)
• A golf outing that reminds us of when golf was an attitude as much as an activity (Lake Geneva, anyone!?)
• And so much more!
If you find anything that I’ve mentioned uncomfortable, off-putting, alarming, or just downright unacceptable, please let us know! In fact, come to a meeting and tell us, or, better yet, join a committee and help us set it right.
On the other hand, if anything that I’ve mentioned is fun, exhilarating, thrilling, or even just thought-provoking, we want to hear that too!
A special thank you to our Executive Committee and Committee Chairs for all the work you’ve done throughout the year.

We are sad to report the passing of two distinguished members of the STLE Chicago Section community On behalf of the Chicago Section, the directory committee would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of these individuals, and thank them for their contributions to the lubrication field and for their active participation in the STLE Chicago Section.
November 14, 1938 to December 24, 2025
Roger P. Hunz, age 87, of Geneva, Illinois passed away Wednesday, December 24, 2025, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Roger was born in Chicago, the son of Leon and Frances (Gierke) Hunz. He was a devoted family man who found his greatest joy in spending time with those he loved most, especially his grandchildren. Being with family meant everything to Roger. He was also deeply connected to his community and his church, where he formed lasting friendships. He had many interests that brought him happiness throughout his life. He loved classic cars and model trains. He also enjoyed meeting friends for breakfast and lunch, a routine he looked forward to and cherished. Dancing, yoga, and playing cards were favorite pastimes, which he did often, always enjoying the company and fun that came with them. He also proudly served in the United States Navy Reserves, a commitment that reflected his sense of duty and service.

Roger was a member of STLE Chicago Section for 58 years and achieved Life Member status. He was an active member who volunteered for numerous committees and was Section Chair in 1989. Roger loved building relationships within STLE and continued to attend Section meetings until a couple of years ago. He earned the Walter D. Hodson Award in 1994 and the Allan A. Manteuffel Award in 2003. His career in the lubricants industry included stints with Keil Chemical and Rhein Chemie. Roger will be sorely missed by many in the STLE community.
Roger is survived by daughter Patricia (Jim) Hullinger of River Forest; son William (Deanna) of St. Charles; grandchildren Ella and Henry Hullinger; step grandchildren Mackenzie and Michael Jordan; sister Karen Mangold (Bill) of Placentia, CA; and many dear nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Mary Ruff, son Roger, Jr who passed away in 2006, his step grandson, Sam Jordan who passed in 2018, and his loving wife Dianne who passed away in 2015,
August 25, 1967 to July 3, 2023

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Dr. Svajus Asadauskas, a chemical engineer and tribologist, at the age of 55 on July 3, 2023
Svajus was most recently Chief Scientist and Head of the Tribology Laboratory in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology at FTMC. Lithuania has lost one of its best-known tribologists.
Svajus was born in Priena and attended Prienai I Secondary School graduating in 1985. Later he studied chemical technology at Kaunas Polytechnic Institute (KPI, now Kaunas University of Technology) and chemistry at Washington State University (USA). During his studies, he actively participated in the activities of the KPI Sąjūdis initiative group. In 1993, he went to Pennsylvania State University (USA) to study for a PhD in chemical engineering, which he received in 1997
Svajus was an active member of STLE Chicago Section until 2009. For three years, Asadauskas worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where he was invited to study how to replace petroleum with vegetable oils in the production of lubricants. Asadauskas later exchanged his civil service for a job with the German company Fuchs Lubricants in the USA, where he worked for eight years. In 2008, he returned to Lithuania, to the then Institute of Chemistry, Department of Materials Science and Corrosion Research, where he successfully established the Tribology Group.
Svajus has been an active member of FTMC community, serving as a member and secretary of the FTMC Scientific Board, taking an interest in scientific affairs in Lithuania and as a board member of Futura Sciencia, an association of Lithuanian scientists from abroad. Our community will greatly miss our always cheerful and sincere colleague, whose advice and insights were useful not only in the scientific field.

As the world accelerates toward electrification and digitalization, the demand for efficient, sustainable, and high-performance thermal management solutions has never been greater. In high-load environments, a specific challenge arises: managing ever-increasing heat loads while minimizing energy consumption, environmental impact, and spatial constraints.
With air-cooled systems reaching their limits and the performance demands of electrical and digital infrastructure surging, the market is looking for new technologies. Immersion cooling, where components are directly submerged in electrically non-conductive (dielectric) fluids, offers a transformative solution. These fluids enable direct heat transfer from the source, dramatically improving thermal efficiency compared to air or indirect liquid cooling.
The Oleon ester base oil technology brings together high performance, safety and low carbon footprints in one future-ready solution for immersion coolants formulation. With the Oleon esters, fluid formulators can design to not only meet but exceed the technical and environmental requirements of the next-generation immersion cooling systems.
