CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
2024-2025 Chair
Chicago
Section STLE
Welcome to the Chicago Section of STLE! Our local section strives to promote education in the science of tribology. While the definition of tribology incorporates the study of friction, wear, and lubrication, it also is the science of interacting surfaces in relative motion. Motion can be described as an action or process of moving or changing place or position. As a section, we achieve this motion through education, outreach, and interaction with young minds with the hope that they will become the next generation of tribologists.
The Chicago chapter holds several monthly meetings encouraging people to share their knowledge. Social and Golf Outings are a means of connecting with others in the society. Education, STEM/ Science Fairs as well as our Scholarship programs are the means of providing information that can be passed on to younger people who may not even be familiar with this discipline.
I encourage you to attend one of our monthly meetings, take an education course or come to socialize with your peers at the Social or Golf Outing.
Thank you to everyone who has been involved with the Chicago Section both past and present. You have all had influence on someone either in their career or investigating the science we call tribology. I also want to thank our officers for their continued efforts to promote the section.

Liquid Confidence: Mixology 101
EVENT OVERVIEW:
Join STLE Chicago for an evening of fun and formulation of the adult libation variety. We’ll be mixing up a few different cocktails with the mixologists from Hollow Leg, but the fun won’t stop there! The evening will also include some appetizers and general comradery!
In this hands-on and interactive training class, you’ll be creating custom cocktails while learning the art + science of mixology in its most basic form: exploring flavor pairings, dilution, temperature, mixing and serving!
We’re truly highlighting the social element here and, as such, this event is open to STLE Members and their guests.
The event is $50 per person and includes 3 cocktails and food with the formulary festivities beginning at 4:30pm.

ROBERT ERCK
October 11, 1954 to October 25, 2024
Bob Erck passed away at 7:06 p.m. Friday evening Oct. 25, 2024 in Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, IL at the age of 70 years. He developed a blood clot in September which led to declining health for the last five weeks of his life. Bob spent the latter part of September and most of October as a patient in Hinsdale Hospital and at Beacon Hill in Lombard, IL. Bob donated his body to science. Survivors include a sister, June, who is 21 years Bob’s senior.
Bob was born in Chicago and grew up in Lombard. He was the son of Doris P. (Tsubota) Erck and Harold W. Erck. Bob’s father was the founder and president of Airway Heating and Ventilating Systems, Inc., of Chicago. Bob’s early interests in taking things apart and building things likely came from his father.
Bob majored in Physics and Math at Goshen College and completed graduate work at the University of Illinois acquiring a Master’s degree in Physics and a Doctorate in Metallurgical Engineering. He spent his professional career as a research scientist at Argonne National Laboratory where he worked for 35 years. Bob was the Principal Metallurgist in the Experimental Operations and Facilities Division and conducted work in superconnectivity, friction and wear measurement test systems, interference microscopy, electron beam evaporation, and high vacuum tribometry. He designed or contributed to projects involving test machine design, pulsed laser deposition, flywheel energy storage, ferroelectrics, superconductors, and friction of cartilage. He also conducted research in many other fields. Bob was the author or co-author of 250 journal articles and presentations
Bob was a Chicago Section STLE member for 36 years and served as Section Chair in 2016. He most recently served as Chair of the Academic Scholarship Committee. Bob was a highly skilled photographer and took nearly all the photos for many years that you have seen in this annual directory.
On a national level, Bob was Chair of the International Student Poster Competition (see photo at right) at every STLE Annual Meeting from 2007 through 2024 and was recently assisting with the Early Career Posters at the Annual Meeting. Bob also helped with the Annual STEM Career Expo at Fermilab.
In his spare time, Bob worked in prairie restoration, as a (volunteer) lumberjack in the Cook County Forest Preserve District, and for several charities in DuPage County. He also served on the City of Darien’s Environmental Committee and as President of the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association.
After he joined the Theatre of Western Springs (TWS) in 2004, theatre and film were a large part of Bob’s life for over 20 years. He participated in many activities at TWS including regular social and fundraising events at which he often took hundreds of photos for the theatre’s archival and publicity purposes. Photography was one of Bob’s many hobbies; he had a good eye for it, and he enjoyed sharing his pictures with all of TWS.
“Dr. Bob” (as he was affectionately known to his theatre friends) truly enjoyed the camaraderie and opportunities for creative and artistic endeavors that he encountered at TWS. Bob also enjoyed the social gatherings at TWS and was known (in true engineering fashion) to suggest that TWS could use “about 30% more parties.” In warm weather, was often found riding his motorcycle.
Bob’s theatre interests leaned towards mechanical matters including Sound projection. His work in Stagecraft and Construction ran the gamut from painting sets used in theatrical productions to serving as the Chair or Co-chair of Set Construction on several occasions to installing Cattell Theatre seating and helping to build and paint the new storage shed in the TWS yard.
Bob was always willing to lend a hand and fulfill a need. He had a generous giving heart as evidenced by his documenting more than 500 occasions of his stopping for people with cars broken down at the side of the road. Bob will be greatly missed by the many lives that he touched.
