Alumni Mass 2025
I hope this year has been kind to you so far. I look forward to hearing about all the things you have been involved in since you graduated from 8th grade.
SPRING 2019
The 2025-2026 school year brought us a new pastor, Fr. Reginald Samuels, whom some of you may remember from your time here many years ago when he was a newly ordained priest. We are joyfully sharing the parish theme he chose for this year, “Let the Church Say Amen,” and it has inspired our school community as well. It reminds us to live with gratitude, faith, and confidence in all that God is doing in our lives. Along with Fr. Reginald, we also
welcomed two new parochial vicars, Fr. Wayne Ly and Fr. Rajesh Babu. All three priests have been supportive and appreciative of our large, vibrant parish school.
In that same spirit, our Saints have had many reasons to say “Amen” this year. We have added new extracurricular opportunities, including martial arts and a chess club, while continuing to offer a wide range of after school enrichment classes. The gym has also received several upgrades, including a new drop-down dividing wall and the addition of the “Saints Snacks” concession stand. The bleachers will be replaced later this year, so we hope you will join us for an upcoming event!
We are also celebrating four sports team championships this fall with the boys and girls cross country, football, and volleyball teams. The Saints are on fire! This was also the inaugural year for the Tri-M Music Honor Society, recognizing our band and choir members. Congratulations, as well, to our five 7th and 8th grade band students who placed in theATSSB Region 13 Middle School Band.
As you read through this edition of the Saints’ Scoop, we hope you will see the many ways our students, families, faculty, and alumni continue to live out our faith and respond with a joyful “Amen.” We are always proud to hear about the accomplishments of our alumni, and we hope you will always consider St. Laurence Catholic School your home. You are welcome to visit and reconnect with us anytime!
Thank you for staying connected, and please consider joining us for our Annual Alumni Mass on Friday, May 22, 2026, if you are available. We would love to hear about all that you have been doing since we last saw you.
You are always in our prayers and we hope you never forget “Once a Saint,Always a Saint!”
God bless,
Principal

Getting to Know Our Pastor, Fr. Reginald Samuels
When Father Reginald returned to St. Laurence Catholic Church in November 2024 as Pastor, it marked a meaningful full-circle moment for our parish community. Many remember him from his first assignment here as a newly ordained priest. He returned with years of pastoral leadership and Archdiocesan service, bringing both experience and a familiar heart to our parish family.
We invited Father Reginald to reflect on his journey of faith and vocation and to share a message with our alumni.
Where were you born and raised?
I was born on October 4, 1966, in Washington, Georgia, the youngest of six children. Faith was central in our home. Sundays meant church, and Wednesdays meant Bible study. That steady rhythm shaped my life in ways I did not fully understand at the time.
What did you study in college?
I earned a degree in Economics from the University of Georgia in 1988.After graduation, I worked in retail management and later moved to Houston in 1997.
How did your journey to the Catholic Church begin?
After moving to Houston, I visited different churches while searching for a spiritual home.At St. Cyril of Alexandria, I encountered the beauty of the Catholic liturgy. After prayer and discernment, I entered the Catholic Church at Easter in 1999.
When did you begin discerning the priesthood?
With spiritual guidance and much prayer, I entered St. Mary’s Seminary in Houston inAugust 2003 at the age of 36.
When were you ordained?
I was ordained to the priesthood on May 30, 2009, by Cardinal Daniel DiNardo. My first assignment was here at St. Laurence Catholic Church as Parochial Vicar.
What has your ministry included over the years?
In February 2012, I was appointed Pastor of St. Hyacinth Catholic Church in Deer Park. I have also served the Archdiocese of Galveston Houston as Ecumenical and Interreligious Officer and as Vicar for Catholics ofAfrican Descent.
Fr. Reginald with Mrs. Barto and Seminarian Basil Housewright ‘14
What does it mean to return to St. Laurence as Pastor?
It is a blessing to return to the parish where I first served as a priest. I am grateful for the opportunity to shepherd this community once again.
What would you like to say to St. Laurence Catholic School alumni?
The faith formed in you here matters. The lessons learned, the prayers offered, and the community experienced at St. Laurence are part of your foundation. Wherever life takes you, remain connected to your faith and to the Church. You will always have a home here.

Dear Fellow SLCSAlumni,
This year I have had the honor of serving as the Advisory School Council Vice President. It has been a rewarding journey filled with many exciting changes for our school, which still remains the home we all remember from our time here.
Both my family and my wife’s family have called St. Laurence home for 30 years, and just like many of you, I had the pleasure of attending SLCS as a kid. Growing up, we didn’t always think about how lucky we were to attend such a Christ-centered school. But now that my children attend SLCS, I can say firsthand how incredibly blessed we all were that our parents chose this school for us. I couldn’t be happier that I now get to share the SLCS experience with my kids.
I encourage you to prayerfully consider supporting the growth of this amazing school that had such a monumental impact on our lives. If you are at that point in life, I couldn’t recommend more strongly that you send your own children to SLCS to learn from an amazing group of educators who go above and beyond to provide a well-rounded education rooted in faith. If that’s not an option, we ask that you consider contributing financially to our Saints andAngels Fund
OurAdvisory School Council has been working diligently to find ways to improve our school community. The 2025-2026 school year has been all about strategic planning as we chart the course for SLCS over the next five years. As part of that effort, we remain focused on continuing to provide a safe and supportive environment for our students.
Last year, we heard that many families wanted on-campus security. The support from all of our donors helped us provide an officer on campus every school day. Additionally, we continue to make security upgrades to our campus through your donations. Thank you for helping us achieve this goal and allowing our families to feel even more secure.
We are also underway with plans to acquire and develop green space close to the school with athletic facilities. Being an SLCS athlete was one of the best parts of my time here. What you may not remember, but our parents certainly do, was the difficulty of securing practice space and how spread out the different sports were. This new space will allow us to have our own practice and game venue for many of our sports teams whenever we need it. We are excited to continue pushing this forward. Stay tuned for more information as we get closer!
My family has had the wonderful opportunity of getting to know our new priests, and what a delight they are. Our church and school community is so blessed to have them! Fr. Wayne has sat at our table and played board games with our family. He is also active in visiting our students and showing them the joy of Christ. Fr. Reginald gives homilies that make you think about your ever-evolving faith journey for hours after the final blessing. Finally, our newest priest, Fr. Rajesh, brings a strong fervor and love of Christ to our community.
I would love to invite any of our fellow alumni to join us back in the church for the alumni Mass on May 22, to experience Mass with the school where it is today and see that it is just as great as you remember.
As always, continue to pray for our wonderful

Can you share a little about yourself and your family?
I am Katherine Hovde, and I graduated from SLCS in 2001. My husband, Ross, and I both grew up in the Sugar Land area. We were married here at St. Laurence in June 2013, and we are blessed with three wonderful children: Matthew, Ainsley, and Harper, who all attend school here now! One of our greatest joys is being a part of the St. Laurence community.
How long have you been part of the SLCS community?
I began attending St. Laurence as a founding student in 1992. At the time, the school ranged from PreK-3 to Fourth Grade. It has been wonderful watching the school grow and change, while maintaining so much special tradition. Mrs. Strandburg was one of my kindergarten teachers that first year, and it meant the world to me that she also taught my son, Matthew, when he was in kindergarten. I was also able to come full circle, when I taught first grade here at SLCS from 2016-2020. For 34 years, SLCS has held a very special place in my heart.
What inspired you to get involved with PTO leadership?
Before getting involved with PTO leadership, I was an elementary school teacher for 11 years. During this time, I always took note of the heartfelt service from the PTO and parent volunteers. The time and energy given by parent volunteers greatly impacts the staff, students, and culture of the school. Taking a step back from teaching to focus on our family was bittersweet. Serving on the PTO allows me the opportunity to give back to the staff and school in the same way volunteers had given to me! It is wonderful to be part of our PTO - a group with a big heart for serving our school.
What has been your favorite part of serving as PTO Co-President?
Serving as PTO Co-President has been an eye-opening experience, granting me a bird’s-eye view that has deepened my appreciation for how our community connects and thrives. We have so many parents who want to jump in, get involved, and serve! I am honored to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with all the helpers of the community who ensure our school is the best it can be. There is so much done behind the scenes ranging from coordinating class parties and field trips, special events to teacher appreciation, fundraising to hospitality, and so much more! It is wonderful to see all the hands in action and knowing our school flourishes because every person’s contribution matters.
What do you love most about SLCS?
We love that SLCS builds a strong foundation of faith for our children. Because of my parents and my time as a St. Laurence student, faith has always been a part of my life. Going to school here gave me the opportunity to have real relationships with our parish priests, especially Father Drew. His gentle guidance in my life is a gift I will always treasure. It is a blessing to see our own children grow their faith here, too! St. Laurence is intentional in growing the faith of our students through many experiences like service projects, retreats, class prayer, and our beloved school masses. We know they are not just taught lessons; they are taught to see life through the lens of God's truth. We are grateful SLCS fosters a genuine, caring community that supports each student’s faith journey. This gift is invaluable to us.
Is there a special moment, event, or memory at SLCS that stands out to you?
My desire to pursue the vocation of teaching came directly from my experiences at St. Laurence Catholic School. It is difficult to name just one special memory that stands out to me. Instead, it was the cumulative work of the nurturing, kind, fun teachers like Mrs. Strandburg, Mrs. Palatka, Mrs. Burgess, and Mrs. Grado (just to name a few), who made school a safe place for me to grow in confidence. Looking back on my childhood, I would describe myself as quiet but determined, not always sure if I should step up or into the spotlight. Many of my teachers not only helped me grow, they helped me feel “seen.” By the time I reached eighth grade, I felt confident to run for the position of student council president and especially enjoyed serving as a student leader in that capacity. I knew early on I wanted to become a teacher so that I could have the same impact nurturing children to shine and be the people God created them to be.
Any words of encouragement for families considering SLCS?
From the beginning, SLCS has been a beautiful place. It is a vibrant and flourishing community. It seems like there is always something going on at St. Laurence! Not only are the academics enriching, there is so much richness to be found everywhere you look: from the volunteers helping at lunch, to the school sports, and all the special events we celebrate. But at the heart of it, we are grateful for the wonderful staff who pour their hearts into their work and the families we have found fellowship with as we raise our children to become true disciples of Christ.
Once a Saint, always a Saint!!!

Katelyn (MARTIN) Haddad
I feel so blessed to be back at SLCS, a place that has always held a special place in my heart. I attended SLCS from Pre-K4 through 5th grade, and it’s such a gift to now be serving the community that helped shape me.
I graduated from Texas A&M University in May 2024 with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, and this past June, I married my high school sweetheart, Anthony Haddad (SLCS Class of 2016)! Even though we didn’t attend SLCS at the same time, we met through Life Teen during our junior year of high school, started dating in our senior year, and after four years of long-distance college, we are so excited to begin this new chapter of life together. I’m so thankful to be back in the SLCS community and look forward to a great school year as BASC Manager!

Originally from New York, I have lived in the Houston area twice and am happy to call Texas “home.” While I attended the University of Houston in the early 90’s, St. Laurence Catholic Church was my parish and I got to witness the new church open. Upon graduation and pursuing my dreams to work in NYC as a Catering Director, my biggest regret was to leave this parish. Little did I know, I would be moving back to Texas in 2013 with my family. In 2018, our daughter started Kindergarten here and we became active members in the church and the school.
Over my lifetime, my greatest blessings have been raising our children and volunteering at their respective schools, our churches, and being a catechist for elementary and Edge students. The Lord planted a seed in my heart many years ago to work with children. I am so grateful to God for His timing. I am humbled and honored to serve the youngest here at SLCS.

I have been a religious sister for more than 25 years and have had the opportunity to teach many grade levels and serve as a school administrator.
While I have loved each role, teaching middle school is my favorite. Before coming to SLCS, I had the privilege of living in Rome, where I was able to meet both Pope Francis and Pope Leo. It was a beautiful experience that deepened my love for the Church and my vocation.

What year did you graduate from SLCS (8th grade)?
SPRING 2019
Mrs.Tull in the SLCS 2nd grade classroom where she teaches
What is a favorite memory from your time as a student at SLCS?
Probably my 8th grade trip. I remember having so much fun with my friends and getting to enjoy time all together outside of school before we went off to High School. I also enjoyed putting shoes out for St. Nicholas Day, going to the chapel duringArt class, and riding on a Mardi Gras “float” when I was at ECC.
Were there any teachers or staff members who made a special impact on you?
My 2nd Grade teacher, Mrs. Merrick. I always felt welcome in her class, and she inspired me to become a teacher. It’s so cool that I am teaching 2nd grade now, just like she did.
After SLCS, what schools did you attend?
I went to St.AgnesAcademy for high school and the University of Houston for college.
What inspired you to become a teacher?
I’ve wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember, which started with my time here at St. Laurence. I was inspired through my experiences here and the teachers that showed students so much compassion and understanding. I always wanted to make sure that my classroom was a place where all of my students felt compassion too.
What brought you back to SLCS as a member of our faculty?
I wanted to come teach in a place that felt like home. The faculty and staff here are so kind. The moment I had my interview, I knew for certain that I wanted to be a part of this amazing staff. The community that St. Laurence has is special, and it’s evident in the way students, faculty, and parents interact with each other.
What do you love most about teaching 2nd grade at SLCS?
I love the sense of community here. From the faculty to the parents and studentseveryone is genuinely kind and so welcoming! I also love getting to see my students’ faces light up when they learn something new or when they are talking about their faith.
What is something special about SLCS today that you want alumni to know?
That so many teachers from my years at St. Laurence still work here. I think it speaks volumes about the environment at the school. I also want our alumni to know that our school has changed in so many wonderful ways, including the support in place for our students in Special Populations.
What advice would you share with current SLCS students?
Know that your education here will prepare you for the road ahead. Also make sure that your faith guides you to be kind and respectful to those around you. Just like the song says, “they’ll know we are Christians by our love.”
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our alumni community? Once a Saint, Always a Saint. We would love to have more alumni join our community as staff members or as parents in our community!
At the Opening Schools Mass, our principal, Mrs. Suzanne Barto, was honored with the Archdiocesan Leadership Award. This recognition is given to an outstanding leader who advances the mission of Catholic education. This special honor celebrates those who unite people, programs, and purpose, and Mrs. Barto lives that mission each day at St. Laurence Catholic School. We are grateful for her faithful leadership and the many ways she serves our students, staff, and families. Learn

A LEGACY OF FAITH, LOVE, AND SERVICE
St. Laurence Catholic School is humbled and grateful to announce the establishment of the Fr. Drew Memorial Scholarship, a living tribute created by his family to celebrate Fr. Drew’s love of and unwavering dedication to Catholic education.
Beginning with the 2025-2026 academic year, this annual scholarship will be awarded to a current St. Laurence Catholic School student who demonstrates:
• Good academic standing
• Exemplary conduct and character
•Asincere commitment to 'living the faith' through active parish and school involvement, and more.
We are honored to share that the inaugural recipient of the Fr. Drew Memorial Scholarship is Alexandra Hamm, class of 2027, whose family recently had the opportunity to meet with Fr. Drew’s niece and her husband. Their visit was a profoundly meaningful moment for both families, a beautiful testament to the lasting impact of Fr. Drew’s life. Alexandra is an altar server and member of the Leo’s Club. Maria is a Eucharistic Minister and Mark served on the school’s Advisory Council as president, as well as led a Life Teen group at St.Angela Merici Parish.
Please join us in prayer as we celebrate this living legacy of faith, love, and service - and give thanks for the blessing of Fr. Drew’s life among us.
Freedom Shrine Dedication at SLCS
St. Laurence Catholic School recently celebrated the installation and dedication of a new Freedom Shrine on campus, a meaningful gift generously donated by the Exchange Club of Sugar Land, Texas. The shrine features preserved replicas of some of America’s most important historical documents and will serve as a lasting educational resource for current and future Saints.
The dedication ceremony included welcoming remarks from Principal Suzanne Barto, a prayer led by Student Council members, a Flag Ceremony and Pledge of Allegiance led by Saints Boy Scouts, and a beautiful performance of the National Anthem by our 7th and 8th Grade Band and Choir. The celebration concluded with a spirited pep rally as students, faculty, and guests gathered to mark the occasion. We were also honored to welcome the Sugar Land Mayor, Carol McCutcheon, who presented the official Catholic Schools Week 2026 Proclamation.
Special thanks to Juli Fournier, President of the Exchange Club of Sugar Land, Texas, and Dr. David Lanagan for their support and participation. did you know?
St. Laurence Catholic School has a Vocations Committee made up of staff members who support our alumni who are discerning or preparing for the priesthood and serving in ministry. From praying for them to sending birthday cards, providing snacks during finals, and even assisting with vestments, this group quietly supports those answering God’s call. Recently, Seminarian Sebastian Delgado delivered snacks donated by SLCS staff for the seminarians’break room, just one example of the many ways our community continues to care for and encourage our alumni in formation.
Be sure to visit the Vocations Bulletin Board, located across from the third-grade classrooms, when you are on campus. There you can see photos of our SLCS alumni who are serving God and His Church. We are proud to continue supporting our alumni as they follow God’s call!
GRANT SUPPORTS DAILY SLPD PRESENCE
St. Laurence Catholic School is excited to share that we have received a $16,000 grant from the Harry S. and Isabel C. Cameron Foundation to support the daily presence of SLPD officers on our campus. This funding directly strengthens our ongoing commitment to providing a safe and secure environment for every student and staff member.
Did You Know? Grant-making organizations carefully evaluate a school’s overall community engagement when awarding funds. Strong participation in efforts like our Annual Fund signals that our families are invested in the mission and future of SLCS, and that support makes a difference when we seek outside funding. Thank you to our community for continuing to stand behind SLCS through your participation, generosity, and prayers!

Carly Fann, who attended St. Laurence Catholic School from PreK through 6th grade, enlisted in the United States Navy in January 2025 and graduated from Naval Boot Camp in October 2025.
She is specializing as an AD, Aviation Machinist’s Mate, and will serve on F/A-18 Super Hornets. While at A-School in Pensacola, Florida, Carly was recently honored with a challenge coin from an officer. Challenge coins are a long-standing military tradition dating back to World War I or earlier. They represent a tangible and lasting sign of an officer’s esteem or shared experience and often serve as a deeply personal token of appreciation.
The quote engraved on her coin reads, “It’s not enough to be against something. You have to be for something better.” Carly is currently stationed in Pensacola, Florida, and will be heading to Lemoore, California, the Navy’s largest Master Jet Base, and later to Virginia Beach, Virginia, this spring. We are so proud of Carly’s commitment and service to our country.

Saints Giving Back : Alumni Helped Lead 8th Grade Retreat
Our 8th Grade Retreat was made especially meaningful through the presence and leadership of St. Laurence Catholic School alumni. Held on the beautiful campus of the University of St. Thomas, the retreat invited students to reflect on their faith and prepare for the transition to high school.
A highlight of the day was welcoming back SLCS alumni —Bryce LaRue ‘21, Georgia Menough ‘21, Kaitlin Raj ‘21, Lilliana Garcia ‘18, and Thomas Barry ‘21—who played an active role in leading the retreat experience. Through small group discussions, games, and a Q&A panel, they shared personal insights, encouraged younger students, and spoke about how their faith has guided them beyond SLCS.
Their witness and leadership created a powerful full-circle moment, as former Saints returned to walk alongside the next generation—reminding our students that the foundation built at SLCS continues to shape lives long after graduation.

Dear SaintsAlumni,
As we continue through another joyful and faith-filled school year at St. Laurence Catholic School, my heart is full of gratitude - for our students, our faculty and staff, and for the countless alumni, families, and friends whose generosity continues to sustain and strengthen our mission.
This year has already been marked by meaningful moments and important progress. We were blessed to receive a $25,000 grant to support the SLCS SPICE program (from an anonymous grantor), and a $16,000 grant from the Harry S. & Isabel C. Cameron Foundation, supporting the presence of on-campus security guards and reinforcing our commitment to student safety and care.
Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, volunteers, donors, and over 180 golfers, our 30th Anniversary Tuition Assistance Golf Tournament was a tremendous success, continuing a beloved tradition and directly supporting families who seek a Catholic education but need financial assistance. Each year, St. Laurence Catholic School provides approximately $1.2 million in tuition assistance and discounts, ensuring that financial circumstances never stand in the way of a faith-filled education.
As we look ahead, excitement is already building for our annual Auction & Gala, Saints Kaleidoscope, a signature event that raises critical funds in support of academic excellence, tuition assistance, campus safety, and student programs. Taking place on April 25, 2026, at Safari Texas Ranch, this vibrant evening will bring together parents, alumni, parishioners, and friends in celebration of the many pieces that make St. Laurence Catholic School what it is today.Alumni and their families are warmly invited to attend, as you remain an essential part of the Saints kaleidoscope! Through fellowship, generosity, and shared purpose, Saints Kaleidoscope offers a meaningful way to reconnect with the school you love while helping ensure a bright future for the next generation of Saints.
While we celebrate these blessings, we are also navigating real challenges. Like many Catholic schools, SLCS is facing ever-increasing costs - from personnel and benefits to campus maintenance, safety measures, and classroom resources. At the same time, we remain deeply committed to keeping tuition as accessible as possible while offering competitive salaries and support for the dedicated teachers and staff who form and educate our students each day. This is where philanthropyespecially ourAnnual Fund - plays a vital role.
The Saints &AngelsAnnual Fund bridges the gap between what tuition covers and the true cost of a St. Laurence education (a gap of approximately $1,675 per student, or over $1.1 million annually). It supports everything from academic excellence and faith formation to safety, security, and student support services. Simply put: it allows SLCS to remain strong, vibrant, and mission-driven.To our alumni, this is where you come in!
St. Laurence Catholic School helped shape who you are today - grounding you in faith, character, and a love of learning. Whether you graduated decades ago or just recently crossed the altar at graduation, you remain an essential part of our story.Your participation in theAnnual Fund (no matter the size) honors the foundation you received and ensures today’s students are given the same opportunity to grow, learn, and thrive.
We invite you and your family to prayerfully consider supporting St. Laurence Catholic School this year. Your gift is more than a donation; it is an investment in faith-filled education, in our teachers, and in the future of the Saints who will carry this legacy forward.
Thank you for being part of the St. Laurence community yesterday, today, and always. Together, let the Church, School, andAlumni sayAmen! Once a Saint,Always a Saint!
Jessica Bardin SLCS Director of Advancement
Our deepest appreciation goes out to the families who have answered the call to make a transformational investment into SLCS.
Mark your calendars for the 2026 Auction & Gala, taking place at Safari Texas Ranch on Saturday, April 25 It promises to be an evening filled with excitement, fellowship, and celebration of our St. Laurence Catholic School community.
The annualAuction & Gala is our largest fundraiser of the year, directly supporting the operational needs of SLCS. We hope you will join us for this special night in support of our school.
Some stories remind us that dreams do not expire. They wait patiently. This is one of those stories. Dawn Modello, the welcoming face at our Main Campus front desk, recently shared a beautiful story about her father. It is a story about sacrifice, perseverance, and a promise kept sixty years later.
When Dawn’s parents married, they were young and hopeful. Her father, Kenneth Horstman, was a college student at La Salle College, working toward his degree while beginning married life. Soon after, he transferred to St. John’s University and began taking night classes. Life was full. Responsibilities grew quickly. Dawn and her twin sister were born, and just one year later, her parents were expecting again. With a growing family to support, Dawn’s father worked two jobs. He attended night school. He did everything he could to provide. Eventually, something had to give. He was only one class short of earning his college degree. One class.
But family came first. Tuition bills, diapers, long workdays, and the steady commitment to being present as a husband and father took priority. College was placed on hold, not because he lacked determination, but because he chose responsibility and love.
Fast forward sixty years. At his granddaughter’s college graduation, surrounded by caps, gowns, and celebration, a quiet regret surfaced. What if he had finished? Was it too late?
Instead of letting the question linger, he acted. He reached out to St. John’s University and asked if completing his degree was still possible. The university responded with enthusiasm. They were inspired by his story and offered to cover everything if he would be willing to share his journey as encouragement for others who never completed their education.
This May, Dawn’s father will put on a St. John’s cap and gown and walk across the graduation stage to receive the diploma he began working toward more than six decades ago. Sixty years later. The dream never disappeared. It simply waited.
For our Saints alumni community, this story speaks to something deeper than a diploma. It speaks to perseverance. It speaks to the dignity of hard work. It speaks to seasons of life. There are moments when we set aside personal goals for family, service, or circumstance. That does not mean those goals are gone forever.
Sometimes they are simply postponed. At St. Laurence, we talk often about faith, resilience, and lifelong learning. Dawn’s father embodies all three. He reminds us that growth does not stop at a certain age. Purpose does not retire. It evolves.
To our alumni reading this: What dream have you quietly placed on a shelf? What goal have you told yourself is behind you? Perhaps it is not behind you at all. Perhaps it is waiting.
Sometimes the most powerful achievements are not the ones completed quickly. They are the ones earned through patience, sacrifice, and courage to try again. It is never too late.
slcs FORMER STUDENT
At 12 years old, I was diagnosed with third-degree congenital heart block and rushed into emergency pacemaker surgery. I had unknowingly lived with severe heart disease since birth, a discovery which ignited my passion to spread awareness about heart conditions in children and teenagers. During high school, I founded and led the American Heart Association (AHA) club for four years, where I researched and taught medical lessons to more than 50 students weekly, trained over 300 students in CPR and AED use, and conducted blood pressure screenings for 400 students with follow-up evaluations by the school nurse for those with concerning levels. The club also supported food-insecure families by packing 143 Thanksgiving bags during COVID and organized annual holiday toy drives that delivered approximately 500 gifts to children staying in hospitals.
As a result of seven years of advocacy and awareness work, I was nominated as an American Heart Association Woman of Impact in 2024 during my freshman year at SMU, leading a selected team of 20 in a nine-week heart disease nationwide fundraising competition and awareness campaign. During the campaign, I taught over 100 students about CPR at SMU student organization meetings, spoke to Dallas companies such as Thrivent and Schneider Electric Square D., and hosted weekly CPR training sessions with SMU’s nurses during school hours. Beyond traditional fundraising, I launched a giveaway of donated tickets, autographed items, and merchandise in partnership with the Houston Astros, Oakland Athletics, St. Louis Cardinals, and Chicago Cubs. I also hosted a give-back event with Kendra Scott, where I shared my story with customers and received 20% of all in-store and online purchases to support my Woman of Impact Campaign. Overall, I raised $13,000 for the Go Red for Women Movement to fund lifesaving research and support public health policies that improve women’s heart health.
Camille pictured in 6th grade SLCS 2016-17
Serving as National American Miss “Miss Texas Teen” for 2024-2025, I’ve continued to expand my mission of spreading awareness about heart disease among young girls and women. Through my speech “Our Heart Story”, I competed against 60 girls nationwide to earn the title of National Spokesmodel 2025, emphasizing that this journey is not just my heart story - it’s our heart story. Heart disease has been the leading cause of death in the United States for the past 100 years and has touched nearly everyone in some way– families, friends, coworkers, teachers, and perhaps even you. Because of this widespread impact, my work is rooted in a collective effort that extends far beyond my own diagnosis, focusing on community-driven education, awareness, and advocacy to combat heart disease together.
As an SMU Caswell Fellow for 2025-2026, I received a $2,500 grant to fund my project Heart to Heart – a heart health education and training initiative for K-12 schools in the Dallas area. Through STEM nights, after-school programs, and health education classes, I have taught 300 students (with a projected reach of 1,000 students by the end of February) about heart disease while demystifying the CPR and AED process. Broadening the reach of the project, I am currently partnering with the SMU Health Center to host training sessions for SMU’s residential commons (Boaz, MHPS, and Ware), sorority and fraternity life (Alpha Kappa Alpha and Alpha Kappa Psi), and student organizations (the BIG Event, American Cancer Society, and Chapter of Minority Association of Pre-Health Students). This month, I was honored to share my heart story, Heart to Heart, and teach CPR on CBS Texas and WFAA Good Morning Texas. Growing up, I never learned CPR, AED skills, or even how to recognize key medical symptoms, but now I have the power to make this change. I have witnessed the debilitating effects of cardiovascular disease, and through Heart to Heart, I empower students and staff with life-saving skills and knowledge. Performing CPR while waiting for medical assistance can triple a person’s chance of survival from cardiac arrest. Knowing the nearest AED and using it promptly can significantly increase survival. When I ask the students at each event, at most one or two know about CPR orAEDs. Now, they can recognize and understand how to act during a medical emergency. By teaching individuals these skills at a young age, they not only become more aware of their heart health but also gain training that could one day save a life.
Jeff Wolfe
Wayne Forrest
We remember with gratitude Wayne Forrest, who passed away in March of 2025, at the age of 88. As St. Laurence Catholic School’s first band and music teacher, he helped establish a love of music that continues to enrich our community today. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, which includes his daughter and current staff member, Leslie “Ms.A”Annicchiarico.
Becky Silveira
We remember Becky Silveira, sister of current staff member John Maklary, who passed away on March 11, 2025. Many in our Saints community recall her time working at St. Laurence and the fond memories she carried of the school. We pray for her family during this time of loss.
We remember former SLCS School Board President and alumni parent, Jeff Wolfe, who passed away on February 23, 2026. During his courageous battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, Jeff displayed extraordinary perseverance, dignity, and trust in God. Even in the face of hardship, his faith never wavered. He carried himself with grace, more concerned with comforting others than himself, leaving a lasting example of courage and selflessness.
The Wolfe family is very involved in our community and has been so supportive of our school. Jeff was the husband of Molly and the father of alumni students, MaryCharles Wolfe ’10, Delaney (Wolfe)Anderson ‘13 and Tucker Wolfe ‘17. We pray for his family’s comfort and peace during this time.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. Let perpetual light shine upon them and may they rest in peace
