A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL Greetings to all of our amazing alumni! Dear SLCS Alumni,

SPRING 2019

We continue to pray for you and sincerely enjoy hearing stories of your accomplishments and adventures that have taken place since you left our school. Thank you to those of you that have joined our alumni Saints Facebook page and sent in information for us to share with the community. You are our pride and joy and we love to share stories with our students about what you are doing since you graduated St. Laurence.

We were blessed to have some of our alumni join us for Career day in February as we rounded out Catholic Schools Week. Our students were very interested to learn about different opportunities that are available to them in the future. If you ever want to share your experiences and show them how you have used your gifts beyond SLCS, please let us know. This is your chance to teach and lead a new generation of saints. One of my greatest memories from this year was how you showed your compassion and love by joining us in praying for one of our graduates, Thomas Le, when he was in need of healing. It was incredible to see how quickly and how often the prayer requests were shared with others and we were incredibly blessed to have Thomas come back and share the story of his recovery with the entire school at Mass. I am often astounded at how close many of our former students still are and how they continue to pray and support each other. I have heard so many stories of former Saints who are rooming together in college or who graduated over 20 years ago and still get together regularly. It amazes me to think about how strong of a bond many of you have maintained from as far back as PreK! I want to make you aware of a new 8th grade service project that we began this year in order to continue our effort to serve Jesus on Earth. We are sad to say that we have lost a few of our alum and staff over the years and are hoping that our new Saints Memorial Garden will be a way to honor them. Our class of 2019 designed the space along the side of our main building to include stones with the names of those Saints that have gone before us. Many of you may remember Helen’s Garden, just outside the 4th grade classrooms. This special space was established many years ago to honor a staff member, Theresa Walker’s daughter, who was killed by a drunk driver. We have now expanded this garden to include others and our hope is to eventually see it used by our community for quiet prayer and reflection. Please know that you are always welcome to come back and visit us, whether you are just curious or want to share your expertise as a graduate of St. Laurence Catholic School. I hope that you continue to connect with us and let us know what you are doing via Facebook or in person. That way we can keep you in touch with your former classmates and inform you of any upcoming events. We may even be bringing back the popular alumni vs. 8th grade basketball or volleyball competition, so stay tuned by staying in touch!

God bless,

Principal

A MESSAGE FROM OUR SCHOOL BOARD PRESIDENT SLCS Alumni, Each year we are very proud of the young students that leave us to form our prestigious alumni and this year it is not an exception. We have gone through your journeys some way or another and as we reflect on where God SPRING 2019 and life has taken you, there is one thing that remains, the spirit of community, faith and support is amazing and this is something that will forever be in your hearts. St. Laurence continues to strive to be the best private school possible and as many of you know we received the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence award from the U.S. Department of Education in 2005 and 2014. In 2017 we received the Innovations in Catholic Education Award. We continue to have great accomplishments, especially in the areas of academics, technology, community involvement, fundraising and athletics. Our academics are abounding; our teachers continue to challenge students by introducing and using new techniques such as differentiated instruction. We have the latest technology used in classrooms today. Our students and families continue to be fully involved in our community, both in our parish and Sugar Land and the surrounding areas. Our fundraising efforts such as Steps for Students continue to hit new levels. The school Auction continues to be an amazing event with the support of all of our wonderful volunteers. Our athletics continue to flourish at SLCS; each of our sports has had great seasons over the years. SLCS is blessed to have many alumni as part of our staff. What a blessing it is to see them return and be part of molding the future of our current students, helping them grow in faith and follow an example of what makes our school stand out. We are very appreciative and feel blessed to have been a part of each of your lives. Your spirit makes this a special school for our community. I would like to take this opportunity to invite all of you to our All School Mass dedicated to you, our Alumni, on May 24th at 8:15am where the entire school community continues to think of you and pray for you. God bless and we hope to see you around campus! Nora Sessions 2017-2019 SLCS School Board President

WELCOME NEW SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS We were blessed with a great turnout for our School Board Discernment in April. A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL Ivonne Jones (Perez) CLASS OF 2008

Tell us a little bit about what you’re doing now. Where you live, etc. I just got married last month (February 23rd) and live in the Galleria area with my husband, Shane. Currently, I’m working in Sugar Land for a company called CDR Assessment Group as their marketing and communications specialist. CDR Assessment Group is a globally recognized assessment, leadership development, and talent management firm. I’m also pursuing my MBA at the Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston. I’m very excited to return to my alma mater, as I graduated from Bauer with a BBA in Management back in 2016. What did you do right after you left SLCS? (college, competition, work, service, volunteer?) After SLCS, I went on to St. Agnes Academy where I participated in a variety of clubs and service organizations. After graduating St. Agnes in 2012, I went on to the University of Houston, where I graduated in 2016. Immediately after graduation, I joined Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s HR department where I worked as a program manager for Talent and Performance Management. About two years later, I made a bit of a career shift into the marketing and communications world, ultimately landing my job at CDR Assessment Group. What do you remember most vividly about your time at SLCS? Having been a student at SLCS for a huge portion of my life (ages 5-13), it seems almost all my childhood memories involve the white and grey tiled hallways and a plaid jumper! Do you still stay in touch with friends from SLCS? If so, who? Yes! In fact, one of my best friends from SLCS, Monica Ford (Priwin) and I had overlapping engagements. I was so happy to attend her wedding and have her at my special day, too! What was your best day at SLCS? I can’t pick just one! But one of my favorites was during Mr. Granito’s 6th grade history class. We were learning about the French Revolution. Somehow that lesson ended up with Mr. G jumping on top of his desk, singing and playing air guitar to “We’re Not Gonna Take It” by Twisted Sister. Every time I hear that song on the radio I think of him! What are some lessons you learned at SLCS that have served you well in your life after SLCS? Mr. Castillo’s 8th grade religion class really solidified the importance of keeping Christ the center of your life. I remember him telling us not to think of our lives as segments, my “religious life” and my “regular life.” But rather, to keep God at the core and allowing His graces to guide your entire being. What advice do you have for today’s Saints? Slow down, and take lots of pictures! I was so excited to grow up and move on to high school, and now I’d give anything to relive those memories one more time. Also, take lots of pictures (and not just the ones for Instagram). Take candid shots of yourself, your friends, and even your teachers. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy looking through photos that were taken on disposable cameras during field trips! What does the future look like for you? Right now, I’m very excited to settle into newlywed life. I’ll hopefully finish up my MBA soon, and we’ll see what happens after that! I’d love to return to SLCS at some point, so I’ll keep fingers crossed for that!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL WE RECEIVED GREAT NEWS FROM IWA! SPRING Congratulations to Olivia Green ‘16, Piper2019 Bratton ‘17, Anna Eckelkamp ‘18, and Emily Green ‘18! We are very proud of you!

We love to hear that Rose Barry, Erin Fuchs, Lilianna Garcia, and Margaret Riebe (SLCS '18) recently earned their Girl Scout Silver Awards by constructing bat habitats and installing them on a ranch in Rosharon, TX. The girls each worked over 50 hours to complete this project. We are proud of them!

Alumni minds think alike! Check out SLCS Faculty and alumni, Mrs. Vainstein '00 and Mrs. Hovde '01 coming to work!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

GARDEN OF SAINTS REMEMBERED

The Class of 2019 is happy to present the Garden of Saints Remembered. This garden is dedicated to the alumni and staff that have gone to our heavenly home. The 8th grade students cleared the garden of weeds and dead foliage, hung solar powered lanterns in the SPRING 2019 tree, planted grass, potted ferns and decorated stones with the names of alumni and staff who’ve passed away. The Saints Class of 2019 welcomes you to stop by and pray, visit, enjoy the garden and pray for those who’ve passed through the doors of St. Laurence Catholic School and touched the hearts of students and staff alike.

Stop by pray, visit, and enjoy the garden!

How long have you been working at SLCS and what is your role? I started as the Director of Advancement at SLCS this past September. Working in Advancement, I have the pleasure of planning our major fundraising events, including the Gala & Auction in the Spring, the Tuition Assistance Golf Tournament in the Fall, and the Annual Fund. What are your favorite SLCS traditions and why? Although I haven’t been here for very long, I already love the SLCS community. One of my favorite traditions so far is Grandparents Day. It is so fun to see all of the families who visit the school and how proud the grandparents are of their grandchildren and everything that they have accomplished at St. Laurence. Where did you grow up? I’m originally from Corpus Christi, Texas, so I love the beach! My hometown is the birthplace of both Whataburger and Selena and it definitely holds a special place in my heart. Tell us about your family: My husband and I met in 2007, during our senior year of high school and we were married in August 2017. We welcomed our daughter, Eliza, in June 2018, right before I started the job at SLCS. We have 2 dogs that we rescued from local animal shelters and they are my daughter’s best friends. Both my family and my husband’s family still live in Corpus Christi, so we are able to see them quite often. What is your favorite food? Like a true Texan, Blue Bell ice cream is my favorite food. What are your hobbies? I’m a huge sports fan so my husband and I love attending live sporting events. It’s a goal of mine to visit every MLB baseball park during my lifetime. Every time we travel, we try to catch a game; whether it’s baseball, basketball, football, soccer, or something else! I also enjoy listening to live music, shopping at Farmer’s Markets, watching movies, traveling, and volunteering with the Fiat Lux Young Adult Group at St. Laurence.

Who is your favorite saint and why? St. Teresa of Calcutta is my favorite saint because she is a beautiful example of service and humility. I first connected with Mother Teresa when I was a kid, reading about how she served the poorest people in the most desolate conditions on the streets of India with the Missionaries of Charity. I’ve always been inspired by the fact that despite feeling separated from God for years, she was resolute in her love for Christ and her call to serve his people. Mother Teresa exemplifies mercy, compassion, and trust that Jesus will always provide.

What advice can you give to our alumni? Something that my dad would always tell me when I was growing up is that if you don’t have your priorities straight, you won’t accomplish much. I learned that my top priorities should always be: God, family, and education/work. If those priorities get out of order, or if something else comes before them, then your life will quickly become out of alignment. My advice to our SLCS alumni is that no matter where you go, what you do, or how successful you become, you should always keep your faith as your number one priority.

Go SAINTS! GO NAVY!

Thank you to our beloved Earthly Angels of St. Laurence School and Parish. It is six months to the day that our journey began with Thomas. Thank you for being a part of his miracles. Thomas received the miracle of life: a full recovery in such short period of time; no acute rehabilitation and the ability to return to the academy. We are so grateful for the overwhelming kindness, generosity and outpouring of love and prayers everyone has given Thomas and our family. The prayers literally spread like wildfire throughout the nations. As stated in Matthew 18:20; “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Because of your prayers we found the strength and courage to surrender to HIM. We are truly blessed to be a part of this St. Laurence family and community! -Le Family
