Voters trounce Kehoe’s Amendments 4 & 5 Commentary

By Alvin A. Reid St. Louis American Missouri voters handed Gov. Mike Kehoe and Republican legislators a pair of resounding defeats on Tuesday, with ramifications almost certain to be felt in

November.

Amendment 4, a key bill passed by the supermajority Republican legislature that would have dramatically changed Missouri’s petition initiative process, was throttled by voters by an overwhelming majority.

amendments to win both a statewide majority and majority support in each of the state’s eight congressional districts.

The effort was spawned by GOP legislators’ dismay over Missouri voters supporting abortion rights at the ballot box in 2024. Since 2018, voters also raised the minimum wage, legal-

ized marijuana, expanded Medicaid and legalized sports betting through the petition process.

Tuesday’s results could signal that state voters are prepared to back abortion rights again in November by rejecting Amendment 3, which would ban abortion in the state in most cases.

By Na’Porsha Williams and Sylvester Brown Jr. St. Louis American .S. Rep. Wesley Bell defeated former Rep. Cori Bush for the second time in two years, turning back the former congresswoman’s attempt to reclaim Missouri’s 1st Congressional District seat.

“I am honored and grateful that the people of Missouri’s First Congressional District have continued to put their trust in me to represent them in Congress,” Bell said in an election-night statement.

“Two years ago, St. Louis voted for better and more accountable representation. We have kept that promise. ... That work does not stop tonight.”

Bell won the Democratic nomination with 59% of the vote to Bush’s 37%. The remaining votes were split among three long-shot candidates, Alissa Murphy (2.3%), Carl Harris (1.1%) and Carl Henderson (0.5%). Bell is heavily favored in November in the strongly Democratic district.

Bell said his focus in a second term would remain on opposing President Donald Trump’s agenda while bringing federal resources to the district.

Uhuru’s Grand opening programming coincides with the weekend marking Marcus Garvey’s 139th birthday. Organizers plan to raise the red, black and green flag in recognition of

Garvey’s legacy of Black economic self-reliance.

The event will include food, presentations, music, spoken word, drumming and a community history exhibit highlighting the West Florissant corridor’s long history of Black business and cultural activity.

“We are building healthy food access, jobs, training and economic opportunity right here in North St. Louis,” said Ona Zené Yeshitela.

The initiative is also expanding through the Reparations Investment Company, which acquires and renovates housing to stabilize neighborhoods and address displacement.

The grand opening will feature remarks from Omali Yeshitela, Ona Zené Yeshitela, artist and poet Makeda Baraka and other cultural workers.

Volunteers, donors, contractors and supporters who contributed to the project will be recognized as part of the festivities.

Page says Proposition U defeat could force budget cuts

St. Louis County Executive Sam Page warned Wednesday that voters’ rejection of Proposition U could force deep budget cuts, including reductions in police staffing, road repairs and park maintenance.

The measure, which would have added a 3.5% use tax on online purchases, received just 35% of the vote Tuesday.

Page said the county has about a year before its share of the Rams settlement

funds is exhausted and projects a budget deficit of at least $50 million next year.

He said the County Council could raise property taxes under existing voter authority, redirect remaining Rams settlement funds to county operations or place the use tax proposal back on the November ballot. Page said he would support another vote but urged the county to better educate voters about the potential consequences of service cuts.

SLIP Continued from A5 small beginnings. Every thought, every word, every action is a seed,” Williams said. He told interns that the type of seed they plant — positive or negative — shapes their growth. He connected their summer experiences to the heat that helps a seed break open.

“Your process to get into SLIP was a hot seed. It was uncomfortable. But you grew,” he said. “The hotter it is, the more pressure you can take.”

Williams reminded them that seeds must absorb water to grow, just as interns had to absorb knowledge, take notes and learn from the systems and environments they entered.

He closed by urging them to seek light — and to be light. “A seed cannot grow in the dark. You have to expose yourself to the light. But more importantly, you have to be the light,” he said. “You walk in head up, tough, strong.

Because you’ve already been through the fire.”

He told the audience that the celebration honored the vision that created SLIP and the vision each intern carries. “Today is not just another SLIP celebration. It’s a celebration of vision,” Williams said.

“Vision is not eyesight.

It is what you see in your heart.” He asked interns to search their hearts for purpose and direction. “Your faith got you here. Your discipline kept you here,” he said. “Take that faith and discipline everywhere you go.”

The program began with 52 students and has now served more than 5,000 interns in St. Louis alone, expanding to 37 cities. “Someday, a SLIP intern will be mayor of the city of St. Louis,” he said.

For many vendors, the workshop was both preparation and community. Tinaira “Ti” Tieuel, owner of Natural Ti’s Loc Gallery, said she

feeling like an abstract discipline. It became a means of answering questions that had followed me since childhood.”

Destin said the internship taught him that innovation happens where disciplines intersect. “I began to see biology not as a departure from my aspirations, but another language through which sustainable energy problems can be solved,” he said.

“To create lasting energy solutions, I must also be a student of biology, chemistry and every field that brings us closer to a more sustainable future.”

Executive Director Shanise Johnson highlighted SLIP’s outcomes for 2026. “We had 180 interns working this summer.

Collectively they earned $800,000,” she said. She emphasized the value of earning professional certifications while still in high school. “Nobody can take that away from you because you earned it,” Johnson said. She thanked parents, employers and partners for their support.

“We cannot do this without you,” she said.

SLIP will kick off its 35th anniversary in September, expanding college prep, financial aid workshops, medical pipeline opportunities and apprenticeships. “Don’t limit yourself,” Johnson said, quoting graduate Cara Woods. “Explore every opportunity and discover what fits you best.”

Carla Willis was eager to share how the program has shaped her daughter Chloe King’s confidence and independence. Her internship at Mercy Hospital taught her responsibility and patience. “She does things for herself,” Willis said. “She talks more — and communication is so important.”

King, an incoming junior at Confluence Prep Academy, has continued to excel despite losing her brother to gun violence three years ago. “I’m so proud of her that I don’t even know what to say,” Willis said.

SLIP alum and advisory board member Tamika Mitchell said the program remains a “cheat code” for students. “You are working in firms and get to experience what a future you might want will feel like,” she said. Mitchell said the program’s economic impact is profound.

“Some of these kids are getting opportunities their parents never had… This is breaking generational curses, and they are lifting the family as they climb,” she said.

Mitchell’s words echoed Williams’ reminder that their next steps matter. “I look forward to continuing to pray for you, support you, honor you, watch you grow your legacy,” he said. “You will do great things if you just keep the faith and keep your discipline.”

Tieuel said Frizz Fest made vending accessible when she was new. “They made it very easy and were clear on their directions,” she said. “What I learned from them, I’ve taken to other events.”

Last week’s session was the third Blooming Business Workshop. The evening included a recap video from Frizz Fest 2025 set to Blessing Offor’s “My Tribe,” filling the room with familiar energy and reminding vendors of the community they are stepping into.

Frizzy By Nature is a 501(c)(3) organization that produces Frizz Fest. This year’s festival will take place Saturday, September 19 from noon to 7 p.m. at Tower Grove Park. “We want our community to grow,” Leslie Hughes said.

“We want to restore Black joy and build generational wealth. Frizz Fest is a place where everyone is safe, seen and celebrated.”

Cortex Innovation District echoed that commitment. “We are glad to support Frizz Fest and your journey as entrepreneurs,” said Ben Molina, Entrepreneurship Programs Manager.

Frizz Fest is now in its ninth year, and the Blooming Business Market remains one of its central features. “It’s an amazing opportunity to promote your product and get new customers,” Valerie Hughes said. “This is your target market right here at Frizz Fest.”

The team also emphasized the importance of the atmosphere vendors help create. “You must ensure that you are creating a safe, inclusive and joyful space,” said Lex Martin.

She also offered logistical guidance — from booth setup to clean-up — and encouraged vendors to make their spaces inviting.

“A focal point of Frizz Fest is our Blooming Business Market,” Valerie Hughes said. “We support entrepreneurship and economic opportunity through our business and food market that hosts 70-plus small businesses.”

A lupus diagnosis inspired a mission to help others eat healthier

By Na’Porsha Williams St. Louis American When doctors told Victoria McCoy she had just six months to live, she knew she needed to make drastic adjustments to how she was living.

McCoy was diagnosed with lupus at age 19. She has experienced kidney failure, heart complications and severe inflammation. After getting the heartbreaking prognosis, she decided to change her diet and commit to physical wellness.

Fourteen years later McCoy is beating the odds — and dedicates her life to helping others do the same through her St. Louis-based meal prep company, Victorious Foods.

Victorious Foods is a Black-owned St. Louis meal-prep company specializing in ready-to-eat, nutritious meals.

“I cut out anything from a box or a bag. That was my go-to mission,” McCoy said. “If it came in a box or a bag, I’m not going to eat it. If it had a shelf life of two years, it doesn’t need to be in my body. ... I had to prepare for success.”

McCoy said that after switching strictly to whole foods and cutting out processed items, she lost 50 pounds in just six months and was able to drastically reduce her daily medications.

Studies published by the National Institutes of Health have found that women who regularly plan their meals are less likely to be overweight or obese.

“Food can either heal you or hurt you; the choice is yours,” McCoy said.

“A lot of things revolve around what we eat. ... I always say food is medicine.”

While healthy eating and regular exercise won’t cure lupus, doctors say they can help people manage the disease and reduce the risk of complications.

Lupus also disproportionately affects Black women, who are three times more likely to develop the disease than White women, according to

the Lupus Foundation of America.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that Black adults also have higher rates of chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes, differences public health experts often attribute to unequal access to healthy foods and quality medical care.

Research suggests that one simple habit — planning meals ahead of time — can make healthy eating easier.

Studies published by the National Institutes of Health have found that women who regularly plan their meals are less likely to be overweight or obese.

For veteran pageant contestant Wauneen Rucker, buying prepped meals became a game changer as she geared up for her final pageant at 57 years old.

“Between her meal planning and connecting me with her brother for fitness coaching, together they got my body right,” Rucker said.

As a wife and mother with a hectic schedule, Rucker said eliminating cooking from her duties provided her with much-needed relief.

“I would have my lunch and my dinner already prepared for me and at least took that off my plate, so I could then devote that time to prepare for my family,” Rucker explained.

Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, previously named polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, affects 170 million women. Clinicians, medical researchers and thousands of patients argued for decades that the name “polycystic ovary syndrome” was a misnomer because it implied ovarian “cysts.”

Having carbohydrates together with a healthy protein can be a satisfying combination. Pair foods like whole-wheat crackers,

sliced apples or mini carrots with hummus, nuts or peanut butter. And try to really limit unhealthy snacks like cookies, candy, chips, jerky and sugary soda. They can be convenient but also filled with salt, sugar and a lot of extra calories.

Plan a meal together.

But with PMOS, the lining gets thicker, and it only sheds after it outgrows its blood supply.

Ricks-Cord: When you’re not in perimenopause or menopause, having hair on your top lip, your chin, your chest or thick hair on your thighs is a sign of excess free testosterone. We make testosterone anyway, but it’s supposed to be in small, balanced amounts. Excess hair growth is a sign that

“I am a certified pastry chef — gone to culinary school, the whole bit. I can’t do it like she does it. I don’t know what she does, but she does it,” said Rucker, noting her fond-

If you realize you have it, go get seen, and ask specifically: “What are we doing to control this menstrual cycle — are we shutting it down or making it flow? What are we using to make me less insulin resistant? What does my hemoglobin A1C look like? What does my cho-

The trick is that PCOS is a lifelong condition, but you can modulate its symptoms and the evolution of the disease through lifestyle modification. Stay away from the “white foods” — white sugar, white rice, white potatoes — as well as anything that’s highly processed.

You can walk five out of seven days a week, 30 minutes, brisk — like it’s a Black Friday sale and there’s a lady trying to get to a sweater before you do, and you need to beat her there. That kind of brisk walking is actually going to pull sugar out of your bloodstream to feed your muscles, and it will help bring down your A1C. So many of us assume the things we’re experiencing are normal, and because it’s not visibly compromising us — but we’re saying, “I just have a headache every day” — and we think that’s OK. But over time, this is what kills us.

So I want to help offset some of that cost for people with chronic illnesses.”

Ryan Coogler reveals new Black Panther at Comic-Con Marvel formally introduced David Jonsson as the next Black Panther during its Hall H presentation at Comic-Con. Franchise director Ryan Coogler confirmed that the actor will portray the adult son of T’Challa (played by the late Chadwick Boseman) and Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia, whose existence was revealed at the end of 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The character was introduced as Toussaint before sharing that his Wakandan name was also T’Challa.

Coogler told the audience that the young prince “grows up” and “comes of age” in the third film. Jonsson joined Coogler, Letitia Wright, and Winston Duke onstage, thanking the franchise’s cast and creative team while declining to disclose details about his performance.

Black Panther III will be Ryan Coogler’s third film in the MCU franchise. Marvel has scheduled the sequel to open in theaters on Dec. 15, 2028, but has not revealed additional plot details or explained how the story will age T’Challa and Nakia’s son into adulthood.

On Saturday, Aug. 1, the Grammy winner, 28, and the Cleveland Cavaliers guard, 29, exchanged vows with their closest family and friends on hand during an intimate ceremony in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Guests included NBA stars Jaylen Brown, Jalen Brunson and Bam Adebayo – as well as Ciara and Russell Wilson.

Intruder arrested outside of Nia Long’s home

A quiet Hollywood Hills neighborhood became the scene of a major police response Saturday night after Los Angeles police answered a reported burglary call at a home owned by actress Nia Long.

Long’s eldest son was reported to be at home when officers were dispatched to the residence after receiving information about a possible break-in.

When they arrived, police encountered a man accompanied by his dog near the front entrance of the property.

Within minutes, multiple patrol vehicles lined the normally quiet street. Video captured by witnesses quickly spread across social media, according to KTLA.com.

Video from the scene showed officers, with weapons drawn, directing the man to slowly walk down a staircase before ordering him to Nia Long lie face down on the driveway.

After several tense moments, the suspect complied without resistance, allowing officers to move in and place him in handcuffs.

Authorities have not publicly identified the suspect or explained why he was at the residence. Investigators also have not disclosed whether the man ever entered the home or remained outside before officers arrived.

Bell supporters said his emphasis on voting rights and constituent service helped earn him another term.

“The challenge to

maintain the right to vote is very real, and he’s one of few candidates talking solely about it and calling together coalitions of leaders to address it in depth,” Lavern Beatty said.

For voter Shirley Farmer, Bell’s longstanding ties to the community mattered.

“Wesley is a person of integrity. He has the people’s interest in mind before his own,” Farmer said. “I knew him before he started on this job, so that makes all the difference.”

Alonzo Adams praised Bell for delivering tangible help to working families and veterans.

“He wasn’t really just trying to make a name for himself or be a part of some squad. … He worked for us — helping my wife to achieve the health care that she needed and working with me as a veteran,” Adams said. “I believe he was more for the people and less for himself.”

The atmosphere inside

the Marriott ballroom was quiet as longtime supporters gathered for Bell’s watch party. The quiet gave way to celebration when the race was called early, prompting some to erupt into chants of “Wesley Bell! Wesley Bell!” Theda Wilson set the stage for Bell’s formal entrance with a rendition of Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come.”

At Bush’s watch party, supporters continued hoping late returns would tighten the race even after The Associated Press called the race for Bell an hour after polls closed.

Before Bush took the stage, high school junior Sophia Johnson credited Bush with inspiring young people to become politically engaged.

“During this election, Cori has inspired a generation of young people like me to believe that courage is so valuable, that justice is worth fighting for and our voices matter.”

Leading up to the election, Proudie reported that her campaign lawn signs were being systematically stolen across the district.

“Just my signs were targeted,” Proudie wrote in a social media post. “Yard signs don’t vote.”

As a state representative, Proudie, a certified teacher and counselor, has focused on education, criminal justice and family law. Her sponsored

to the Missouri Senate in more than two decades. In the chamber, he focused on public safety, health care and economic development and has pointed to nearly $100 million in state funding he says he secured for the county during his tenure. He is term-limited in the Senate.

Williams said his campaign focused on tangible accomplishments and local issues.

“I’m so proud of the campaign we ran. We ran on issues,” he said. “We ran on the demolition of Jamestown Mall. We ran on cleaning up Kinloch.

We ran on getting an engineering program for the University of Missouri-St. Louis.”

After acknowledging his loss, Williams suggested Mosley’s late entry into the race affected the outcome.

“We saw the data would have definitely had a different outcome had there not been three candidates,” Williams said. “But we never make excuses, and again, the outcome’s the outcome.”

Mosley, who represents the 13th District and served as Senate Democratic minority caucus chair, comes from a family with deep roots in Missouri politics. Her father, Elbert A. Walton Jr., and her late stepmother, Juanita Head Walton, both served in the Missouri House, as did her sister, brother-in-law and husband. Her daughter, Chanel Mosley, now serves in the House as well.

The energy at Williams’ watch party ran high, with supporters and volunteers filling the room and watching results roll in on

large screens. The energy and optimism remained high even as the numbers turned against him. At the end of the night, Williams called his family, supporters, campaign workers and everyone who had voted for him up to the stage.

He vowed to keep working for the people of the county and said he was proud of the campaign he ran.

The mood at Zimmerman’s watch party was steady and even-keeled as his lead held from the first returns to the last. It was a quiet, understated night that mirrored the calm the assessor had campaigned on.

Some supporters said the race drew them in as engaged voters for the first time. Jason Gillespie, a mortgage

advocate from Ballwin, said he spent significant time reading up on each candidate before casting his ballot.

“It motivated me to educate myself and because I want what’s best for my community,” he said.

Zimmerman’s campaign framed the win as the beginning of a long road.

“St. Louis County voters are just ready for things to work for them,” said campaign director Rosetta Okohson. “We feel overwhelmingly that Jake is the right person to deliver that work. It’s going to be a lot of work — I don’t think it’s a cakewalk. Today was the easy part.”

Okohson pointed to Zimmerman’s approach as the reason.

“What I’ve watched

Jake do over and over again is be in those rooms, be present, be willing to listen,” she said. “I grew up with a grandmother that said we had two ears and one mouth, and I think Jake leads in that way.

That’s what we need right now.”

Gillespie said he hopes Zimmerman now follows through.

“I hope that he sticks to what he says he’s going to do. I know he is a very organized and structured candidate, and he says that he is for the community, so I hope that he just comes in strong and plays his role.”

Zimmerman advances to the November general election, where he will face Republican county Councilman Dennis Hancock of Fenton and Green Party candidate J.D. McFarland.

Anthony Jones knew he wanted to be a director long before he understood what a director actually did. What he did know — even as a kid — was that he wanted to tell his own stories. “I knew that I wanted to be a director before I knew exactly what a director was,” he said. “But I also knew that to be that I wanted to be able to tell my own stories.”

The line to see the exhibition one last time stretched from the entryway, through the grand hall and out the doors beyond it. Inside the Lee Auditorium, every seat was occupied — and a line of people who hoped to get in had to be turned away.

Lebby delivered news that softened the disappointment for those who missed the July 12 performance.

“I’m thrilled to make a major announcement,” she said. “We are officially adding a second weekend of shows.”

“Mourning Mill Creek” will be presented at the Jefferson Mission Church Theater August 14–16.

Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7 p.m., with a 3 p.m. matinee on Sunday.

The Whitaker Foundation and the Regional Arts Commission will fund the encore weekend.

Audiences can expect a love letter to Mill Creek Valley — and a dramatization of what happened leading up to and immediately following the demolition of the neighborhood in 1959, allegedly in the name of urban renewal.

Through “Mourning Mill Creek,” the community’s demise is told by the people who lived it.

Two families and a retired woman anchor the story.

At first, there is denial that their homes and the neighborhood they cherish will be taken. Then comes frustration as local politicians spar over Mill Creek’s future. Anger follows as residents are mishandled during relocation.

And finally, the sadness

What was just as compelling as the production itself was watching audience members whose family stories were reflected on stage.

The exhibition’s curator, Gwen Moore — the Missouri Historical Society’s Curator of Urban Landscape and Community Identity —

was one of them. Her parents fought for the best outcome possible during the relocation process.

Moore and her sister, Dr. Malaika Horne, who served on the exhibition’s advisory council, sat attentively. They nudged each other, exchanged glances and nodded throughout the hourand15minute performance. Like most sisters, they seemed to share a quiet language of expressions that allowed them

The Showcase drew 3,188 attendees across two weekends, highlighting films with St. Louis ties and honoring actor Lou Diamond Phillips with a Career Achievement Award. Jones’ film was selected from dozens of entries across genres. For a first-time festival entrant, the recognition was overwhelming.

“I could not believe that any of this would happen,” Jones said. “This is what every filmmaker dreams of… I poured so much of myself into this film, and it’s getting the recognition it deserves.”

Kid Electric follows a young hero who views the world with innocence and optimism — a reflection of how Jones once saw things himself. “He’s quirky, he’s a little bit innocent, and he sees the world in a beautiful light,” Jones said. “He’s somebody that knows the world can be better, and he wants to be a part of keeping it that way.”

The film blends comicstyle narration with live action, mirroring the character’s worldview.

Jones said the story grew out of his own transition into adulthood — and the realities he encountered along the way. “The film is essentially me going out into the world and learning about the world,” he said.

“It’s about Kid Electric learning what it actually means to be a hero.”

Jones said he wanted to create characters who reflect real people — including those dealing with depression, anxiety and the pressure to fit into expectations. “A lot of the things we are dealing with now is mental health,” he said. “You never really see heroes deal with that…

Jones hopes audiences see Kid Electric as proof that St. Louis filmmakers can tell stories as powerful as those created by directors brought in from out of town. “The filmmakers here have just as much to say,” he said. “There are people here that will tell amazing, beautiful stories — me being one of them.”

He wants viewers to walk away inspired not only by the film, but by the community that helped shape it. He hopes that they enjoyed the film enough to want to see more from the St. Louisbased or St. Louis native filmmakers.

Jones also hopes Kid Electric’s journey resonates with anyone who has ever felt boxed in. “I hope people can see his story and know that you don’t have to be stuck in the barriers that people put you in,” he said. “It’s okay to make mistakes along your path… you can still be the thing that you want to be.”

Jones said choosing hope has shaped his own life as much as it shapes his film. “I think choos-

ing hope gave my mom a child she can be proud of,” he said. “And it gave my girlfriend a partner she can trust and believe in.”

He believes hope is the most heroic act of all.

“Choosing to be better is always the hardest option,” he said. “But it’s the option you’ll want to go down in the end.”

For Jones, winning the Essy Award marks a turning point — not just in his career, but in the story he has been writing for himself since childhood.

“I’m 30 years old. I directed Kid Electric, which was something that was completely mine,” he said. “Even if nothing else happens in my career, at least I can look back and say that the little boy who loved superheroes and comics is having his film showcased.”

As much as I’m here for anybody from St. Louis and the Metro East, when I tell you that my first reaction to hearing that Akon and Ne-Yo were teaming up for a tour, I was like, “Oh for real…good for them.” I’m so glad I went – event if the only reason was to make sure I always show love to my homeboys and homegirls. Y’all, Tuesday night is easily in my top ten all-time performances at Hollywood Casino Amphitheater. And I’m talking all the way back to the Riverport days. I know what you’re thinking, “Delores, girl, are you saying they are up there with Sugar Water?” You better know it! When I tell you they put their ankles, toes, elbows and shoulder meat up in that show. “Nights Like This” should be renamed “An Incredible Night,” because that’s really what it was. All those former cheer squad captains trotting towards their seats in the tiniest skirts paired with the biggest boots you’ve ever seen knew what time it was. I know their poor little calves and ankles probably looked like peach fruit roll ups when they peeled those things off their feet! And what’s the point of having a skirt on if I can see the seam of your panties? I mean, you’re basically wearing a waistband. But let me get on with the show. It was absolutely everything! Akon should have performed “Put On” right after “Soul Survivor,” because that’s exactly what he did for East St. Louis – all night long! Now I know Ne-Yo is gonna put on a show everywhere he goes. I’ve seen him perform everywhere from a hotel lobby and the Galleria parking lot (y’all remember that Microsoft event?) and give like he was playing a sold-out show at Busch Stadium. Finally seeing him on a big stage, I know that he is everything I assumed he would be.

Him and Akon said, “Usher and Breezy, we are entering the chat as far as the ‘blow your mind’ pop adjacent R&B shows.” The only downside in seeing the show is how my mobility esteem tumbled after seeing those double jointed twerkers fly through the air. They were tooted, booted and bent up like pretzels on that pole! Lydia, I will be back at your Mid-County YMCA Pilates class as soon as I can. My usual Silver Sneakers Yoga is not gonna get me on those ladies’ level. If they ever get tired of being half-nekkid (yes, nekkid), those heffas can join Cirque De Solel! Ne-Yo and Akon had me locked in. And when Akon showed he could keep up with Les Twins, I was shook. I was so thrilled with “Nights Like This” that I gave Ne-Yo a pass on those gold pants! Every time I thought they played all their hits, they pulled some more out of the bag. And I ain’t mad at Ne-Yo’s little country schtick either. That “Up Out & Gone” song is a bop!

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS ORAL HEALTH CARE The City of St. Louis Department of Health (DOH) is seeking proposals for organizations to provide ORAL HEALTH CARE SERVICES in the Missouri portion of the St. Louis Transitional Grant Area (TGA), which include dental health care services, outpatient diagnosis, prevention, and other oral health therapy to persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).

These services are funded by Ryan White Part A funding, which is distributed by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The funding supports medical and support services for PLWHA, with the primary objective of improving access to and retention in care.

A new season at The Rock Father Royce M. Thomas to be installed as pastor priest on Aug. 23

St. Louis American Staff The Rock has entered a season of renewal. Saint Alphonsus Liguori “The Rock” Catholic Church is welcoming Father Royce M. Thomas, C.Ss.R., as its new pastor priest. The new installation signals both continuity and fresh energy for a parish long shaped by music, faith and community.

On Sunday, Aug. 23, Saint Alphonsus Liguori “The Rock” Catholic Church will gather in prayer and celebration as Father Thomas is installed as its new pastor priest during the 10 a.m. Mass.

The Archbishop of St. Louis, the Most Reverend Mitchell T. Rozanski, will preside at the Mass and formally install Father Thomas as pastor.

Founded in 1867, the Rock has long served as a spiritual anchor for Black Catholics in St. Louis.

Father Thomas, 37, will be the first Black pastor priest to lead the parish since 2002, and only the second in its history following Father Maurice J. Nutt, who served from 1993 to 2002.

Father Thomas said his focus is “to stabilize and revitalize” the parish — welcoming back congregants who may have become less engaged, while inviting new worshippers seeking a dynamic and culturally grounded

experience of Mass. “The Rock’s doors will be open to anyone who comes communicating a desire to have a relationship with Christ,” Father Thomas said. “There is a perception that you have to be a certain way to come to church, that you have to come in perfect. Come as you are. Whoever you are, whatever state of life you are in, just come in with an open heart and God will take care of the rest.”

Born and raised in Trinidad, Father Thomas grew up in the Catholic Church and was active

in music ministry — playing drums and guitar and singing in the choir. Although he was assigned to The Rock by the Redemptorist administration rather than choosing the parish himself, he immediately connected with the rhythmic, musical worship style that has long defined the Rock’s liturgy. He has quickly become known for incorporating singing into his homily, a practice that has resonated with parishioners.

“There’s no need to be quiet at the Rock,”

he said. “Some see Mass as dull or routine, expecting to passively observe.

However, at the Rock, we are more expressive.”

Father Thomas emphasized that the parish’s vibrancy is not limited to music. He hopes to attract worshippers seeking deeper intellectual engagement with their faith. “We are ready to provide theology and philosophy,” Father Thomas said.

He recently completed his one-year appointment as the Rock’s parochial administrator — a period that functions as a trial for

the role of pastor priest.

During that year, attendance grew from roughly 140 worshippers to closer to 250. He has set a goal of 375 regular attendees and hopes to reach 450 within five years. His appointment as pastor priest is for an indefinite term.

Before arriving in St. Louis, Father Thomas served as campus chaplain at Immaculata University near Philadelphia. He completed his Novitiate in Toronto, earned his graduate degree at the Oblate School of Theology in San

Antonio, and completed his undergraduate studies at St. John’s University in New York.

He said he has grown to appreciate St. Louis for its slower pace compared to larger cities where he has lived and worked. The warmth and friendliness he associates with his Caribbean upbringing feel familiar here — though he admits he has yet to find a restaurant that serves Trinidadian cuisine.

Father Thomas also brings a unique personal history to his ministry.

Before entering religious life, he was a standout cricket player in Trinidad — an all-tool athlete who excelled as both a batsman and a bowler.

He said cricket would have been his most likely career path had he not pursued the priesthood.

“If you are looking for a space, come be a part of us. Come be a part of our community, our family. We are here to serve and uplift,” Father Thomas said. “Jesus is here. And we are very welcoming. You will find greeters at our door. You will experience our community before Mass even begins.”
