Principal’s Welcome On behalf of St Joseph’s College, I extend a very warm welcome to the 40th National Schools Rugby Festival. It is with great pride that we mark this significant anniversary milestone of schoolboy rugby from its humble beginnings back in 1986, to the prestigious showcase event it is today. We are delighted to welcome back former students, families and staff as well as schools who took part last year, alongside a number of new entrants who will be experiencing the National Schools Rugby Festival for the first time. As ever, we anticipate a weekend of exciting top-flight rugby, including our U15 tournament and for the first time, girls’ rugby will be contested as a full competition at the festival. We are very grateful to this year’s headline sponsor, Fleximize, and our other sponsors which include: The School Fees Company, Tubeway Extrusions, Secondary Glazing, John Fowlers Solicitors, Infinity Logistics, Curious Retreats, Savills, Wincer Kievenaar, Tec 41, Fiducia Wealth, Lancaster Maloney Martin, Ellisons, STC Teamwear, TH Moss, AJ Menspa, OPT Services, Abora Homes, 4-CE, Falcon EHG Group and Simmons Building Services. Thank you also to St Joseph’ College staff without whom this festival would not be possible. St Joseph’s festival has grown exponentially in my 12 years as Principal at the College. I am hugely proud of the quality of the competition, the opportunities the event provides for students and staff, as well as our local community and local businesses. Last year, our online Live Stream Views increased 16% to 156K, and an impressive 1.2 million views across social media, which we hope to exceed this year. Finally, I would like to recognise our security support from Templar Cross Security. I also ask that parents ensure that they know of their children’s whereabouts at all times during the festival and that they are supervised appropriately. I look forward to catching up with you all over the weekend of our 40th National Schools Rugby Festival.
Mrs Danielle Clarke, Principal

A Word from the Captain It’s a massive honour to captain St Joseph’s at the 40th Rugby Festival. It’s my last year at the school and my last chance to play in it, so leading the lads out this year will mean a lot. The festival’s been part of St Jo’s since 1987, and you grow up at the school knowing how big this weekend is. So many players have worn the shirt before us, and now we get our chance to make the school proud. We’ve had a long pre-season and put a lot of work in. There have been a few injuries along the way, but the lads have worked hard to get back. The coaches have given us extra programmes, including work in the gym, and everyone’s really committed to it. We’re excited to get out there and see that hard work pay off. With the games being so short, we’ve got to be ready from the first whistle. You can’t take ten minutes to settle in. We need to start quickly, play in the right areas and take our points when the chances come. Between matches, it’s about switching off, recovering and then getting focused again for the next one. As captain, I want to keep everyone confident and bring the best out of the team. Part of that is making the right calls on the pitch and making sure we’re putting what the coaches have worked on into practice. But it’s also about keeping the lads together and enjoying the weekend. Respect is a big part of it too - for the other teams, the officials and each other. There’ll be some strong sides here, including Wellington and Ballymena, so we know we’ll be tested. That’s what makes it exciting. Walking out through the tunnel with the team, hearing the crowd and knowing everyone’s behind us - that’s probably what I’m looking forward to most. The whole school puts so much into this weekend, and it brings everyone together. I would also like to thank the sponsors, grounds team and everyone else who works had behind the scenes to make this festival possible. To everyone coming to watch, thank you for your support, you make a bigger difference than you probably realise. When it’s a close game and we’re tiring, hearing you on the sidelines gives us that extra push. So come down, get behind us and make some noise. There are fifteen of us on the pitch - we need you to be our sixteenth player. Cabhan Brown Captain – St Joseph’s College 1st XV 2026

A Word from NextGen For the St Joseph's College Festival to have been running for 40 years is a remarkable achievement, and this competition shows no signs of slowing down. The introduction of girl’s sides and the continued inclusion of the U11 and U15 tournaments are exactly what school rugby needs to continue to thrive, and as a former student who was fortunate enough to represent St Jo's at two festivals, I would have relished the opportunity to run out on festi weekend at those age groups and create even more unforgettable memories. School's rugby should excite. It should create a new generation of Rugby fans every season, and the first XV should be a point of pride for every student within their school community. At NextGenLive, we are so privileged to support this sporting ecosystem, which is epitomised on weekends like this, and at schools like St Joseph's College. We cannot wait to see which young rugby players will be uncovered as future stars here on Belstead Road, but we are just as enthusiastic about inspiring their teammates, lower school students, friends, family, and supporters watching on to commit to our great game for life. Enjoy these very special few days of rugby, and thank you again to the whole St Joseph's College team for allowing us to be part of this Festival for so many years! Wilf Kemsley NextGenLive

“There doesn't need to be a barrier between art and rugby. There is a benefit to doing both. Rugby in itself is an art. Creativity on the pitch can inspire creativity off it. They do not need to be opposite and there is a beauty in combining them.”

A Word from the Director of Rugby It is a genuine pleasure to welcome everyone to St Joseph’s College for the 40th National Schools Rugby Festival. This weekend represents a special moment in our calendar — a celebration of tradition, talent and the values that underpin schoolboy rugby at its very best. Once again, we are proud to showcase a 1st XV squad brimming with emerging talent. This year’s group includes two players from our U16s who have stepped up superbly, embracing the demands of senior rugby with composure, conviction and a maturity beyond their years. Alongside this youthful energy, the squad boasts a strong core of experience. Half of the group return for their second Festival, while four players — Patterson, Westley, Bloomfield and Slater — are set to achieve the rare distinction of appearing at three consecutive Festivals, a remarkable milestone that speaks for their quality and commitment. Our preparation for this weekend has been both challenging and rewarding. From our preseason trip to Norwich Festival to competitive fixtures against Rugby, Seaford, Norwich, Felsted and Finborough, the team has been thoroughly tested. Outstanding recent results have been encouraging for our confidence, but it is the style, resilience and character shown within all the performances so far that has been most pleasing. A central pillar of rugby at St Joseph’s is the creation of a clear and vigorous player pathway, and it is fantastic to see that vision come to life once again. Alongside the flagship U18 competition, the Festival now provides valuable opportunities for our U11 and U15 squads. This sense of progression throughout the College is now tangible, laying strong foundations for a sustainable and successful rugby programme for years to come. Finally, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes. The planning, preparation and coordination required to deliver an event of this scale take months of effort, and we are deeply grateful for that dedication. On behalf of the team, it is a privilege to represent St Joseph’s College at the UK’s most prestigious schools rugby event. We look forward to an outstanding weekend of competition, camaraderie and rugby of the highest calibre. Mr Rowland Winter, Director of Rugby & Head of Performance Sport

St Joseph’s College U15 Team This year, the Festival continues to build on the success of last year’s inaugural U15 competition, which has now been expanded to feature 16 teams. Taking place once again on Friday and Saturday, the U15 event provides an outstanding platform for this age group to experience Festival rugby at a high level. Many of these players will aspire to progress into our U18 Festival squads in the coming seasons, and this early exposure plays a key role in that journey. We are also delighted to welcome back several schools who took part last year, alongside a number of new entrants who will be experiencing the National Schools Rugby Festival for the first time. As ever, we are incredibly proud to host such a high calibre of young players and schools, and to provide a stage where talent, teamwork, and the spirit of rugby can shine. Mr Pete White, U15 Rugby Coach

Kirkham Grammar At Kirkham Grammar School, pupils combine high-level school rugby with academic success, developing the skills and confidence to thrive beyond school. Our programme supports ambitious players to maximise their potential through expert coaching, individual development plans, strength and conditioning, and a challenging programme of competitive fixtures, national festivals and tournaments. Links with professional clubs and academies, including Sale Sharks, offer opportunities for additional training and development, while connections with universities such as Loughborough, Exeter, Cardiff Met and Hartpury help pupils explore higher-level sporting pathways. Whether aspiring to professional rugby, representative sport or university competition, pupils benefit from a clear pathway to progress. International tours, leadership opportunities, captaincy and mentoring younger players further enrich their experience. We also welcome pupils who simply want to enjoy competitive rugby, improve their fitness and be part of a team. Our aim is to develop not only better rugby players, but confident, resilient and responsible young men, equipped to succeed academically, pursue their ambitions and embrace life beyond KGS. Founded in 1604, Blundell’s is a co-educational day and boarding school for around 800 pupils aged 3–18, set within 100 acres in Devon. We are excited to be bringing both our 1st XV, captained this year by Charlie Dawe, and our U15s to a festival that is a highlight of our rugby season. With a rugby tradition spanning more than 150 years, Blundell’s is proud of the breadth and depth of the rugby programme it offers. Regularly fielding 18 teams each week, we have enjoyed considerable success over the years, with numerous former pupils representing their countries at the highest level, including the British & Irish Lions. That tradition continues today. Recent Blundellian Ben Coen was a member of the 2024 U20 World Cup-winning squad in South Africa, while Demelza Short was part of the England team that secured the 2026 Grand Slam. Wellington College Wellington College was founded in 1853 as a national memorial to the Duke of Wellington, with its first pupils arriving in 1859. Rugby was introduced by the College’s first Master, Edward White Benson, who had previously taught at Rugby School and brought with him a belief in the game’s capacity to develop character, courage and community. That tradition remains central to College life today. The modern programme is built around the values of Connection and progression with teams across every age group supported by an experienced coaching staff with the aim that all players in the program have positive experiences and leave with a passion to continue playing. Wellington is proud of its Old Wellingtonian rugby heritage, which includes current England and Harlequins prop Fin Baxter, as well as former Scotland internationals Max and Thom Evans, USA Sevens captain Madison Hughes and professional players including Max Lahiff and Sam AsplandRobinson. Wellington looks forward to testing themselves against outstanding opposition and embracing everything that makes the St Joseph’s Festival such a special occasion. QEGS Wakefield Rugby Union has been central to school life in Wakefield since 1872, shaping our culture, character, and sporting legacy. As we enter an exciting new chapter following the merger to form Queen Elizabeth’s School (QES Wakefield), our storied rugby tradition remains as vibrant and ambitious as ever. Over generations, we have celebrated the international achievements of Old Savilians, including Rugby World Cup winner Mike Tindall, England Captain Mike Harrison, and British & Irish Lion Gordon Bonner. Yet our deepest pride lies in the grass-roots success of our ‘Made in Wakefield’ ethos: nurturing resilient, committed players who excel everywhere from local Yorkshire clubs to the global stage. With 11 Twickenham Schools Cup Final appearances and more than two decades competing at the prestigious St Joseph’s Festival, we are thrilled to return for the landmark 40th anniversary tournament. We wish every team the very best and look forward to what will undoubtedly be another unforgettable festival of school rugby. For the first time in the history of the National Schools Rugby Festival, we are delighted to welcome a girls’ competition to the tournament. This marks an exciting milestone for the Festival, reflecting the continued growth of the women’s and girls’ game and providing talented young players with the opportunity to represent their schools on one of the biggest stages in schools rugby. The introduction of the girls’ competition is about more than adding another tournament. It is about creating opportunities, raising the visibility of girls’ rugby and ensuring that the next generation of players can experience the challenge, excitement and tradition that make schools rugby so special. We are proud to welcome the players, coaches and schools making history as the first girls’ teams to compete at the Festival. We hope this is just the beginning, and that the girls’ competition will grow to become an established and celebrated part of the National Schools Rugby Festival for years to come. Rules All games are played in accordance with ERFSU Laws (To include the Global Law Trials). In the preliminary phases of the competition, competing schools will be drawn into groups of four. The organisers seed pools taking into account geography and previous record. All preliminary group stage matches on Saturday shall be of 24 minutes duration – 12 minutes each way with a 3 minute interval at half time. During the group stage of the competition, each team will play every other team within its own group, 3 points being awarded for a win and 1 point for a draw. Should two or more teams finish their group matches with the same number of league points, the team scoring the greater number of tries will be placed higher. If still equal, the team with the best points difference between points scored and points conceded will be placed higher. If still equal, the team with the greater number of tries converted will be placed higher. Should two or more sides still be equal, the decision will be reached on the basis of the games between those sides. The winning team would be placed above the other side. If the match is a draw, number of tries scored would be next considered followed, if needed, by the number of converted tries. Should these criteria not decide the result, for example, if the result is 0-0, the tie shall be decided by a place kicking competition, best of five kicks, taken from directly in front of the posts on the 22m line, moving into Sudden Death if required. All players named in a twenty five man squad are eligible to be selected to take a place kick, with each player taking one kick only. Following the preliminary group stages, the tournament will become a knockout competition. The two highest placed sides from each group entering into the Trophy Quarter Finals and the remaining sides competing in the Bowl Quarter Finals. At the semi-final stage, Plate and Shield competitions will emerge from the Trophy and Bowl respectively. To clarify, any drawn matches during the knockout stage of the competition will be decided using the above mentioned criteria (number of tries scored and if still undecided, number of tries converted). Should these criteria not decide the result, for example, if the result is 0-0, the tie shall be decided by a place kicking competition, best of five kicks, taken from directly in front of the posts on the 22m line, moving into Sudden Death if required - all players named in a twenty five man squad are eligible to be selected to take a place kick, with each player taking one kick only. All knockout matches on Sunday shall be of 20 minutes duration – 10 minutes each way with a 3 minute interval at half time. The RFU has confirmed that no players should play more than 90 minutes across the weekend. It will be the responsibility of each school’s coaching staff to ensure these guidelines are adhered to. Replacements may be used in a ‘rolling’ fashion, with no limit on how many substitutions may be made in any given game. We would like to highlight that there is an expectation that teams participating in this festival adhere to the “Half Game Policy”, with all selected players gaining the opportunity to play across the weekend.
62
On field discipline Yellow / Red Cards Any player receiving a Yellow card will be temporarily sent off for four minutes in the 24 minute games (Saturday) and three minutes in the 20 minute games (Sunday). Any player receiving a Red card will not be allowed to take any further part in the competition subject to assessment by the tournament official. Any such discipline incidents will be reported back to the pupil’s Head Teacher for review of whether further sanction is appropriate. The team may start the next game in the tournament with a full complement of players. Playing Kit Each school will advise the organisers of its colours at the time of entry. An alternative set of jerseys must be available and, in the event of a clash of colours, the team named second in the programme shall be required to change. The referee will make any decision with regards to the clash of colours. Player Eligibility In addition to complying with RFU Regulation 15, including obtaining any necessary RFU approval, dispensation, or exemption for player eligibility, all participating schools and colleges must declare any such approvals on their submitted team sheet(s) prior to the festival. St Joseph’s College reserves the right to request supporting documentation where appropriate and must be notified in advance of any player whose participation is subject to RFU dispensation or approval. Furthermore, any player attending a school or college through an exchange programme, international placement, short-term placement, or similar arrangement must be declared to St Joseph’s College at the point of team sheet submission. Schools and colleges must confirm that such players are fully enrolled members of the institution and are undertaking a recognised academic programme of study at the school or college they are representing. Failure to declare relevant eligibility information may result in the player being deemed ineligible to participate and may lead to sanctions at the discretion of the festival organisers. Match KO times – obligations for each team It is the responsibility of each school to ascertain its playing commitments throughout the tournament, and for them to be present at the pitch where they are due to play, ten minutes before the advertised kick off time. The team named second in the programme will be required to enter the field of play first. Any matter arising from these rules shall be referred to the Tournament Manager whose decision shall be final. The organisers reserve the right, in the event of inclement weather, or for any other reason, to alter the format of the competition and/or the programme. Clarification and instructions in such case will be issued by the Tournament Control. These rules supersede any previous ones issued.
