Giving Back: Residents and Staff Join Forces for Easter Project After two years of pandemic restrictions and quarantines, people from all walks of life have been understandably ready for things to get back to normal.

For residents at St. John’s Home, “normal” means getting back to meaningful programs and initiatives that make them feel closer to the greater community.

Knowing this, St. John’s employees—led by the social work and therapeutic recreation teams at St. John’s Home—spearheaded an Easter project that promised a chance to deliver joy to children throughout the Rochester area.

“We wanted to do something a little different and more meaningful than we typically do for Easter,” said St. John’s Home Director of Resident Life Stacey Hall. “We wanted (residents) to become involved in normal life activities and making Easter baskets is something we’ve all done for our kids in the past, and we want people to have meaning and find joy in life at St. John’s and find joy in giving back to the community.”

It was St. John’s employees who led the charge in securing donated items— candy, books, and other gifts—to fill the baskets. The baskets were filled in the week leading up to Easter, courtesy of residents, employees, volunteers, and even visiting family members. From there, a group of St. John’s Home residents delivered 25 Easter baskets packed with goodies to Willow Center in Rochester for children affected by domestic violence. Another 25 baskets were brought to Glove House in the Southern Tier on Good Friday, just in time to distribute to children prior to the holiday.

St. John’s resident Angie Sinacore perhaps said it best when she described this meaningful experience in an interview with 13 WHAM. “It was like having Easter Sunday at our house when we were getting ready for the grandchildren,” Angie said. “We just loaded up the Easter baskets and it was fun because we didn’t have to do all the shopping.”

St. John’s has always made a priority of celebrating the important moments in the lives of residents. Not surprisingly, milestone birthdays have historically been particularly joyous celebrations.

Helen Fliss was another Centenarian we honored in January. “What a lovely luncheon it was celebrating mom’s 102.5 years,” said her daughter Chris.

“Thank you Holly and St. John’s for making this special day possible.”

Despite the challenges posed by planning group celebrations in recent months, several disciplines across St. John’s including dining services and dietary, have worked hard to continue these celebrations and help residents share these times with those closest to them.

Love, Later in Life, Blossoms at St. John’s Meadows Iconic Rochester news anchor Don Alhart put it best when he called Reva Sipser and Don Bogdanski’s tale of finding each other at St. John’s Meadows “a Valentine’s Day love story, and proof that Cupid is still alive and well, no matter the age.”

“Don was always like a fixture here,” remembers Reva.

“He was involved in all of the activities around the place. I had always seen Don around.”

“We have activities here that we both attended and somehow or another decided we would try to have some activities outside of here, and we started dating,” Don told 13 WHAM for a special Valentine’s Day story.

Both Reva and Don had lost their life partners prior to the time they started dating. Admittedly, neither of them was looking for a new relationship, but their friendship blossomed into something special.

Reva and Don also mentioned on air that they were currently visiting local restaurants to determine where the best “garbage plate” is served here in town. A viewer touched by this special story even contacted St. John’s to donate a gift card to help pay for Reva and Don’s next destination!

Exercise Offerings Keep Residents Fit Since Stephen Gardner joined St. John’s Meadows as wellness specialist about a year ago, he has seen “marked improvement” in the fitness levels of residents participating in his classes. Gardner—an experienced physical education teacher and fitness instructor—leads classes and creates resources for independent and assisted living residents to embrace an active lifestyle on their own terms. In addition to conducting classes several times each weekday, Gardner is available to give pool and fitness center tours to demonstrate specific equipment and exercises.

An Oral History

The St. John’s Green House Homes welcomed new residents for the first time on February 28, 2012. However, the story of these 10-person nursing homes began years before the opening—and continues today. Hear how it all started and why the houses continue to thrive from some of the talented individuals who spearheaded, established, and refined these first of their kind small nursing homes.

The St. John’s Green Houses—like all communities that follow the Green House Project’s model—are staffed by universal workers called shahbazim.
