We did not know it at the time, but 2020 changed senior housing forever.

The pandemic and the resulting periods of isolation brought a great urgency to deliver services in a more safe and convenient manner. For independent living residents who call St. John’s Meadows and Brickstone by St. John’s home, there was the expectation that their communities would adapt to best support them amidst a changing landscape.

St. John’s responded by making the adjustments needed to better serve residents. Many of the services and amenities that have been important staples for years transitioned to meet changing needs brought on by the pandemic. This shift has laid the groundwork for some of these important parts of the St. John’s independent living culture that are being enjoyed in new ways. In some cases, these operational shifts could stand the test of time and become permanent.

Market Café Enters Grocery Business This Chestnut Court eatery has long provided St. John’s Meadows residents and guests with a place to get a fast meal. In 2020, the Market Café used available resources to expand and provide much needed groceries and supplies when residents sought them most.

“Stores were limiting their hours,” says Market Café Manager Jaimie Cullinan, who had been in his job about a year when lockdown began in mid-March 2020. “Stores were running out of toilet paper. They were running out of food.” Cullinan, a career restaurant professional whose family also owned a grocery store growing up, recognized this vital need and began adding shelving in the café in order to stock staple items for residents in need.

Coffee Hour Provides Critical Link Since its opening in 2013, Brickstone has hosted Friday morning gettogethers to keep residents updated on the happenings throughout the community. Held in the Wintergarden, these regularly scheduled meetings, previously meant to inform community members, now turned into well attended fixtures on resident social calendars.

When the COVID-19 pandemic made public gatherings impossible, residents went without their beloved coffee hours for months. However, once the calendar flipped to 2021, St. John’s staff members were ready to deliver a virtual coffee hour experience. The response has been emphatically positive. “Although we miss the coffee and the goodies that we would have, and the socialization, this is really cool,” resident Janet McKenna expressed to the virtual group from her apartment. “You can hear people better, you can see people better. I like it.”

This comprehensive online tool is now available at no cost to caregivers—providing answers and advice, whenever you need them.

The Dementia Resource Center has a variety of resources for both new and experienced caregivers. You will also find videos, checklists, templates, and other online versions of tools we use at St. John’s to structure care for residents living with dementia.

St. John’s Residents Build Desks for Local Students in Need A group of residents from St. John’s Meadows and Brickstone by St. John’s independent living communities search for an opportunity to utilize their talents to make a difference in the Rochester community for months.

After seeing a national news story about a similar program that supplied desks for school students in need, these residents mobilized to raise funds, purchase materials, and assemble desks in the wood shop at St. John’s Meadows. The group then connected with Catholic Family Center’s division of Refugee and Immigrant Services, who happily picked up dozens of desks and identified local schoolchildren who needed them.

Successful Nursing Home Model Delivers Peace of Mind Mare Millow’s experience as the daughter of a resident in long-term care has been similar to so many others over the past year. “It has been hard not being able to see her in person,” Millow told WXXI News’ Beth Adams in February.

Millow had been able to visit her mother Kim at the St. John’s Green House Homes whenever she liked before the pandemic, but has settled for video chats and window visits while patiently waiting for restrictions on visitation to be lifted.

Throughout the past year, Millow and her family’s confidence in the care provided by St. John’s never wavered.

“I’ve never felt that she’s not safe,” said Millow. “Or that I have to worry about her in ways other than you would worry about any elderly parent.”

WXXI News joined a collection of media outlets to produce a story highlighting the success of the Green House Project nursing home model during the COVID-19 crisis.

Vaccine’s Arrival Brings Hope for Brighter Tomorrows Access to the COVID-19 vaccine has been the single most important step St. John’s can take towards reestablishing all of the meaningful connections in the lives of residents and staff members. Beginning in late December 2020 and continuing into the early part of 2021, vaccination clinics were held at St. John’s Home, St. John’s Meadows, the Hawthorne, Brickstone, and the St. John’s Green House Homes.

Now that residents and employees at every St. John’s community have been given the opportunity to get immunized against the disease, we look forward with much hope for a brighter future. St. John’s anxiously awaits the return of visiting family members and friends, beloved volunteers, and all of the other people who—for over a century—have made St. John’s such a special place.

Bob Wesley is a “Health Care Hero” St. John’s Infection Preventionist Bob Wesley was recently named to the list of 2021 Rochester Business Journal “Health Care Heroes.”

Bob’s work and dedication supporting infection control measures, PPE procurement and education, and resident COVID testing throughout 2020 was recognized in the Medical Professional category. On Veterans Day, Bob visited each resident throughout St. John’s Home who served in the military and thanked them for his or her service.
