It’s time for Cadet football! St. John’s football program is gearing up for the ultimate test this season. The Cadet 2019 preseason polling ranks are as high as #3 in the nation and as low as #5, while having the undisputed #1 toughest schedule in America. The team will play the #1 (Mater Dei, CA – SJC Homecoming, nationally televised on ESPN), #4 (St. Joseph’s Preparatory, PA), #5 (Duncanville, TX), #7 (IMG Academy, FL), #9 (Gonzaga, DC), #15 (DeMatha, MD), #21 (Deerfield Beach, FL) and #25 (Good Counsel, MD) nationally-ranked teams. They will face off against eight of the top 25 teams in the country. This year’s team is led by its senior captains and four-year varsity players WR Rakim Jarrett (5-star ranking) on offense and LB Mekhail Sherman (5-star ranking) on defense. Although the team is committed to bringing home a WCAC championship for the SJC community, these student-athletes are also focused on exemplifying St. John’s Lasallian values of fortitude, hard work, Christian service and self-sacrifice for the good of others – both on and off the gridiron. Following a tough playoff loss in 2018, their offseason performance training program and commitment to excellence has led them to develop a Pillars of Success platform that encompasses faith, discipline, toughness, trust, love and respect. The team’s vision is to utilize this platform to develop a standard of excellence for individual and team success. They demonstrate great courage to play such a challenging schedule, which will only help them become a stronger, more cohesive team and provide them with more opportunities to learn from and support one another. It is a season that will test the limits of their endurance and teamwork. We would like to thank Head Coach Joe Casamento and his coaching staff and Athletic Director Brian Griffin and his staff for their outstanding leadership and dedication to our students. SEASONS COACHING AT ST. JOHN’S: 5

oe Casamento is entering his 43rd year as a high school football coach. Prior to joining the coaching staff at St. John’s, he served as the head coach for Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, NY, for 17 years. During those 17 years, he met with tremendous success, amassing a 143-27 record and winning a New York state title. He was recently inducted into the Christian Brothers Academy Hall of Fame. His work as a quarterback coach is equally impressive. In fact, each of his quarterbacks for the past 17 years has gone on to play Division I football at the collegiate level. Prior to taking the head coaching position at CBA, Coach Caz served on the staff of perennial New York power Henninger High School. Success has always been a common denominator in Coach Caz’s career. In fact, the teams that he has coached since 1972 have only posted one losing season and have won 12 sectional championships. For more than a decade, Coach Caz’s College Prep Camps across the country have helped high school football players find the right college match. His focus at these camps extends beyond the fundamentals of football, encompassing life skills and Lasallian values, aiding the young men in becoming better sons and brothers and preparing them to be better fathers. Off the field, Coach Caz most recently served as the executive director of LEAD USA, a not-for-profit organization that offers a wide range of instructional services designed to bring about individual and organizational transformation. In that capacity, he traveled around the country, speaking to students and helping school administrations implement necessary changes.
SEASONS COACHING AT ST. JOHN’S: 17

oach Gillespie is entering his 14th season as the SJC defensive coordinator and his 17th season at St. John’s. Prior to coming to SJC, Coach Gillespie served as the offensive coordinator at Calvin Coolidge High School, his alma mater. As a player at Coolidge, he was named the Offensive Player of the Year for the DCIAA in 1993. He ranked first in rushing that season in DC and was given All-Met honorable mention. Coach Gillespie then attended West Virginia University, where he was a standout on special teams. He transferred to Glenville State College, where he earned all-conference honors in 1998 and played in the National All-Star College Football Classic. Coach Gillespie has held several positions at St. John’s in addition to defensive coordinator, including strength and conditioning coach, linebackers coach and running backs coach. Coach Gillespie’s defensives are known for being aggressive and physical. One of the high points of his tenure at St. John’s was 2013, when St. John’s advanced to the championship game behind a defense that allowed just 11 points a game, by far the best in the league. Coach Gillespie is currently an educator in St. John’s Benilde Program, a position he has held for the past eight years. He and his wife, Lakeeda, live in Washington, DC, with their daughters, Aniya, Gianni and Marley, and their son, Lathan.
ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH / OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR PAT WARD ’93 SEASONS COACHING AT ST. JOHN’S: 20

oach Ward graduated from St. John’s in 1993 before beginning a stellar career at the University of Maryland, where he was a four-year starter (one year as a defensive tackle and three years as an offensive guard). The Terps recognized Ward with the prestigious A.V. Williams Award. As a player at St. John’s, Coach Ward helped anchor a Cadet team that advanced to the championship game. Coach Ward was a two-time All-American, two-time All-Met player and two-time all-league player. He was awarded the Mush Dubofsky Award at St. John’s, which is given to the player who made the biggest contribution to the team. He was also inducted into the St. John’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Prior to accepting the administrative position at St. John’s, Coach Ward had served as an athletic director and teacher at The Heights School in Potomac, MD. As a coach at St. John’s, Coach Ward has met with tremendous success. In fact, in 19 out of his 20

coaches seasons at St. John’s at least one lineman has been named first-team all-conference. Also, DCSportsfan recognized Coach Ward as the Metropolitan Area’s Assistant Coach of the Year. Coach Ward established the Ward Line Academy in 2012. Through WLA, Coach Ward works with linemen in grades six and up in a one-on-one setting.
QUARTERBACKS DREW AUMAVAE SEASONS COACHING AT ST. JOHN’S: 2

rew Aumavae is a long-time football coach who works with some of the nation’s best high school and college quarterbacks as a member of Trent Dilfer’s Elite 11 coaching staff. He played football at Centralia High School in Centralia, WA. He graduated from Eastern Oregon University, where he was a four-year football letter winner for the Mountaineers from 1991-1995. Aumavae is also a private quarterback coach and the founder of Quarterback Influence, offering specialty instruction and training to quarterbacks throughout the country. He is an active member of several football organizations, serves as an Organizing Committee member for the Polynesian Bowl and is a board member for the AIGA Foundation.
DEFENSIVE BACKS ANTHONY BAGLEY SEASONS COACHING AT ST. JOHN’S: 1
A
nthony Bagley, who is entering his first season with the Cadet football program, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge from the high school, college, semi-professional and professional levels. He was raised in Prince George’s County and graduated from DeMatha Catholic High School. He attended Bowie State University and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration, with a concentration in accounting, in 1993. Prior to St. John’s, Bagley completed two NFL coaching internships. In 2018, he was a defensive backs coaching intern with the Cleveland Browns, and he was also a defensive backs coaching intern with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019. Before his NFL internships, Bagley was both the head coach and defensive coordinator for the DC Generals, a semi-professional team that is part of the NPSFL. During his tenure, the Generals played for three national championships and won the title in 2017. His defensive units were consistently ranked in the top five nationally in points per game allowed, rushing yards per game allowed, passing
yards per game allowed and total yards per game allowed. Bagley’s collegiate experience comes from his time as defensive assistant coach at Bowie State University, where he coached defensive backs and hybrid outside linebackers. He coached on the CIAA Northern Division championship team that played in both the CIAA championship game and the NCAA Division II playoffs. That team was also nationally ranked in the top 25 Division II rankings for the first time in the school’s history. His high school experience comes from the six years he spent as a defensive backs assistant coach at DeMatha. During his tenure, the team won back-to-back WCAC championships (2013 and 2014). He also coached several players that went on to earn All-WCAC honors and college scholarships. In addition to his love and passion for coaching football, Bagley is also the managing partner for an accounting firm in Prince George’s County. He and his wife, Sandra, currently reside in Bowie, MD, with their four children: James, Anthony, Bria and Taylor
LINEBACKERS DENO CAMPBELL SEASONS COACHING AT ST. JOHN’S: 2

eno Campbell graduated from DeMatha Catholic High School in 1981. He went on to attend and play football for the College of William and Mary. In 1985, he returned to DeMatha to begin his coaching career. During his time there, Campbell was part of 19 championship teams as the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator. He and his wife, Karen, are proud that their daughter Jazmin will be a freshman at Elon University this fall. Campbell also has four older children, John McAfee, Brian McAfee, Becky Reynolds and Richard Reynolds.
RUNNING BACK OLANDIS GARY SEASONS COACHING AT ST. JOHN’S: 1

orn in Washington, DC, Olandis Gary is a former NFL running back who played for the Denver Broncos from 1999-2002 and the Detroit Lions from 20032004. Gary is an alumnus of Riverdale Baptist School in Upper Marlboro, MD, and the University of Georgia, from which he graduated in 1999. While at Georgia, Gary was team captain, voted second team All-SEC and earned the title of Offensive Player of the Game in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

coaches During his NFL rookie season, Gary replaced an injured Terrell Davis and rushed for 1,159 yards on 276 attempts, with a 4.2 yards per carry average and seven touchdowns. He was named AFC Player of the Week multiple times during his rookie year and still holds NFL records for most rushing yards in a single game played on Christmas Day, rushing attempts in a game (37) and average rushing yards per game (97). He previously held the Maryland state high school rushing record for 10 consecutive years (1993-2003) with 5,374 yards.
RUNNING BACKS WALLACE LEE SEASONS COACHING AT ST. JOHN’S: 10

oach Lee enters his 10th season coaching at St. John’s. His five years as the head freshman coach met with great success, and the team posted a winning record. Coach Lee previously held the position of junior varsity offensive coordinator. Prior to St. John’s, Lee coached for nine years at Northwestern High School (JV head coach and assistant on the varsity staff) before moving to the boys’ club level. He coached at White Oak for eight seasons, New Carrollton for four years and Montgomery Village for one year. As a high school athlete at Northwestern, Coach Lee played wide receiver, running back and defensive back.
OFFENSIVE AND DEFENSIVE LINE JOE PETRAIUOLO SEASONS COACHING AT ST. JOHN’S: 4

oach Petraiuolo came to St. John’s from Cleveland, OH, where he played football at Mayfield High School. Petraiuolo graduated from the University of Dayton, where he continued his football career. He specializes in offensive and defensive line play. Petraiuolo also teaches Social Studies at St. John’s.
QUALITY CONTROL DON RUSHING SEASONS COACHING AT ST. JOHN’S: 3

on Rushing graduated from Archbishop John Carroll High School, where he was a member of the Catholic League All-Star Team and an All-Metropolitan defensive end. He played on the University of Maryland football team for three years and began his football coaching career while still serving as a student-teacher. Rushing coached high school football in Montgomery County at Walt Whitman for five years, Springbrook for 17 years (six state 4A titles) and Sherwood for nine years (two state 4A titles). He served as an assistant coach in the WCAC for Our Lady of Good Counsel High School for 16 years (four WCAC championships).
WIDE RECEIVERS PHIL SAVOY SEASONS COACHING AT ST. JOHN’S: 17

oach Savoy returns for his 17th season as the varsity wide receivers coach. After graduating from Carroll High School, Coach Savoy went on to play wide receiver for the University of Colorado, where he ranked second in all-time receptions for the Buffaloes. He also set a university record with eight catches in a single quarter. As a senior, he was an All-Big 12 selection. After being drafted by the Arizona Cardinals, Coach Savoy spent time with the Baltimore Ravens as a special teams player. He also spent time with the Seattle Seahawks and St. Louis Rams. After his time in the NFL, he played in the Arena Football League. As a coach at St. John’s, Savoy has coached several players who have gone on to have successful college careers, including Marcus Lee ’04, Towson’s all-time leading receiver. Several of Coach Savoy’s players have been selected as first-team all-conference, including Scotty Washington ’15 (Wake Forest). Coach Savoy’s receivers are known for their precise routes and tremendous blocking. Coach Savoy and his wife, Kristina, live in Washington, DC, with their children, Chynna, Malachi and Sydney.

abali Smith joined St. John’s as the varsity quarterback coach in 2015. He works alongside Coach Casamento in developing the varsity, JV and freshman quarterbacks. Coach Smith coached at Gonzaga for the past several years. In high school, Coach Smith was a first-team all-conference selection as quarterback for Eastern High School in Washington, DC, before moving on to play quarterback at Bowie State.

oach Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in fitness sports management from the University of the Cumberlands, as well as a master’s degree in sport and health science from Life University. He is a certified USA Track and Field coach, as well as an EXOS-certified performance specialist. Smith previously worked at IMG Academy, where he worked with several MLB players, including Andrew McCutchen, Pedro Alvarez and Starlin Castro, and NFL players, including Tim Tebow, Randall Cobb, Eddie Lacy and Eric Reid. Smith also studied under worldclass speed coach Loren Seagrave and worked with gold medalists LaShawn Merrit and Demetrius Pinder.
P
rior to joining the St. John’s staff in 2012, Coach Ward started every game (48 total) for all four years at the University of Akron as a guard and a center. He was named team captain his senior year and went on to play for both the Orlando Predators and the Cleveland Gladiators of the Arena Football League. A two-time first-team all-conference lineman at St. John’s, Coach Ward received the Mush Dubofsky Award as a senior, was named as the Old Spice Red Zone Player of the Year for DC, was selected as a 2006 All-Met player by The Washington Post and was chosen as team captain. A two-way player, he achieved the remarkable feat of leading the team in tackles from his defensive line position. During Coach Ward’s six years on the SJC staff, he has coached five first-team All-Met defensive lineman (Eric Assoua ’15, Tre-Mon Morris-Brash ’19, Terrell Lewis ’16, Tyree Johnson ’17 and Cam Goode ’18). Coach Ward has also worked with seven Division 1 BCS players (Assoua, Lewis, Johnson, Goode, Cam Spence ’17 and Kofi Wardlow ’17). He also assists his older brother, Pat, with the Ward Line Academy.
OFFENSIVE LINE PETER WHITE ‘09 SEASONS COACHING AT ST. JOHN’S: 6

oach White came to St. John’s having recently finished his college career at Temple University, where he was a starter on the offensive line. He transferred to Temple after graduating from Maryland, where he played in a total of 23 games during three seasons. At. St. John’s, White was a three-time first-team All-WCAC performer on the offensive line. During his senior season, he recorded 63 pancake blocks and was selected as an Under Armour All-American, playing in the ESPN game the following January. He was also team captain and received the Mush Dubofksy Award. White was a key member of the Cadet program, earning a starting position on the offensive line in his very first game as a freshman. He went on to be a two-way starter for his sophomore, junior and senior seasons.

oach John Ricca returned to St. John’s in 2016 and now heads the JV program. Ricca served as the school’s head football coach and athletic director from 1987-2002. His time with the Cadets included winning the WMAC championship in 1989 by defeating DeMatha (for the second time that season) at Byrd Stadium 27-12. For his efforts, Ricca was named as the Washington Area Coach of the Year by both The Washington Post and the Touchdown Club of DC. Ricca left St. John’s in 2002 to start a football program at St. John’s Catholic Prep in Frederick, MD. There his teams went 64-36-1 during his 10 seasons as head coach and won an MIAA championship in 2013. In between his two terms in Frederick, Ricca spent four years as an assistant coach at Catholic University, where his son, Keith, was a star quarterback. During his time at SJC, he coached several future NFL players and sent dozens to play collegiately, including current St. John’s coach Pat Ward ’93. Two of his sons, Kevin ’94 and JD ’02, played for their father and were recently inducted into the SJC Athletic Hall of Fame. His daughter, Jamie Ricca Ready ’96, was the first female inductee to the SJC Athletic Hall of Fame. Ricca’s 33-year coaching career also includes terms as an assistant coach at Bullis and Walter Johnson High School. In 25 years as a head coach, his teams were 143-113-2. As a player, Ricca was an All-Met two-way end at Georgetown Prep and an All-American at Duke University, where he captained the 1973 team. Drafted by the New York Jets, he played professionally for five teams in three leagues (World Football League, Canadian Football League and the NFL). Ricca and his wife, Therese, live in Poolesville. Among their many relatives with connections to St. John’s are their six children (Kevin ’94, Jamie, Kristi ’00, JD ’02, Jacqui ’03 and Keith), five of whom are SJC graduates. Jacqui’s husband, Nick Jackson ’03, also played for his father-in-law. Jamie’s husband, Tim Ready, was an assistant coach under Ricca for several years.
C
oach Johnson coached boys’ club football for 15 years before joining the St. John’s staff in 2013. During those 15 years, his teams were champions or runners-up 11 times. From 2006 to 2012, he coached for the Beacon House Falcons. As a player for Dunbar, Coach Johnson played several postions, including running back, slot receiver, corner back and safety, leading Dunbar in interceptions during one season.
OFFENSIVE LINE GEORGE SHIPYAN ’75 SEASONS COACHING AT ST. JOHN’S: 2

eorge Shipyan ’75 has more than 20 years of experience coaching football at the youth, high school and men’s amateur levels. He helped establish the Westlake Bulldog youth organization in southern Maryland and served as the offensive line coach for the Bulldogs at the 2009 AYFL National Championship 13U. He was the offensive line coach for Westlake High School and North Point High School in Waldorf, MD, from 2010-2014. Shipyan previously served as the offensive line coach for the University of Canberra Firebirds, Senior Men, in Australia. They won back-to-back Australian Capital Territory conference championships and went undefeated in 2016 and 2017. Shipyan was also the head coach for the University of Canberra Juniors, a team of 14- to 18-year-olds, who won the 2017 Australian Capital Territory championship. He also coached the offensive line for the New South Wales State All-Star Team in Sydney, Australia.

rian Griffin joined St. John’s in 2014 from IMG Performance and IMG Academy (IMG) in Bradenton, FL, where he served for several years as vice president of performance and president of IMG’s training business and sports camp solutions. During his tenure, IMG Performance experienced an extensive 450-acre campus expansion and sports programming growth, including a five-story residence hall, a new multi-sport complex and a 2,500-seat stadium. These key pieces were designed to make IMG Academy a global destination for world-class performance training, top-level student education (K-12) and total athlete development in all sports and levels. Prior to arriving at IMG, Griffin was the senior director of performance for Under Armour in Baltimore, MD, working within their sports and brand marketing departments. From 2007-2010, he led their grassroots initiatives related to performance training, combines, camps and clinics across all sports, including the NFL Scouting Combine. Griffin received his bachelor’s degree in economics from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania in 1991. There, he was a linebacker for the varsity football team, a two-time defensive captain and the recipient of the Edgar Church Memorial Award, which is presented to the student-athlete who has made the most outstanding contributions to the varsity team based on the inspiration, courage and loyalty displayed toward the university and the team. Additionally, he earned his master’s degree in sports leadership from Duquesne University and is a certified performance training coach. “Griff” was raised in Colorado Springs, CO, but he received his Catholic high school education in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area, where he currently resides with his wife Rebekah and their three children, Connor ’17, Haley ’18 and Erin.

at Ward ’93 is in his ninth year as assistant athletic director for St. John’s College High School. During his time at St. John’s, Ward has overseen the day-to-day operations of the entire Athletic Department and the school’s athletic facilities. With the expansion of the Athletic Department, Ward now focuses on boys’ sports at SJC. In addition to his role in the Athletic Department, Ward has been the offensive line coach at St. John’s since 2000. He has had great success, with at least one lineman being named first team All-Conference in each of his years at St. John’s. Ward has coached 24 first team All-Conference linemen and 11 first or second team All-Met linemen (as determined by The Washington Post), as well as six All-Americans and three NFL players. Most recently, Ward was an assistant coach for the 2013 Under Armour All-American Game. As a player, Ward was a two-time football All-Met and All-American recipient at St. John’s. At the University of Maryland, he was a four-year starter, an All-Conference ACC player and the recipient of the prestigious A.V. Williams Award, given to the UMD football player who demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship. He was inducted into the St. John’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. Ward comes from a long line of St. John’s graduates, including his grandfather, Robert Cady ’37; uncle, Mike Cady ’69; cousins, Frank Cady ’42 and Ralph Hawkins ’53; and brother, Mike Ward ’06. He is very proud of his history at St. John’s and excited to be part of the St. John’s community.

M
aggie Ward is in her second year as assistant athletic director for St. John’s. She assists in all elements of the Athletic Department, with a focus on running the daily operations of the girls’ sports programs. Prior to taking on the role of assistant athletic director, Ward spent two years as an athletic trainer for the Cadets. She received her bachelor’s degree in science, with a concentration in athletic training, from the University of Vermont in 2011. She went on to earn a master’s degree in education, with a concentration in athletic training, from Old Dominion University in 2013. While attending Old Dominion, she was a graduate assistant at Christopher Newport University, working with the football team, track and field team and women’s lacrosse team. Before St. John’s, Ward worked at Trinity Episcopal School, a private high school in Richmond, VA; at MedStar National Rehabilitation Network in an orthopedic clinic; and at Blake High School in Silver Spring, MD. In addition to her duties as assistant athletic director, Ward is an instructor for a health and nutrition class and has certification in fitness nutrition from the American Council on Exercise (ACE).
M
ike Walker is a local native who received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from the University of Maryland in 1998. While working on his degree, he interned with the university’s sports medicine department, providing medical care and coverage for several of the Terrapins’ athletic teams. Walker went on to receive his master’s degree in health and education in 2000 from Frostburg State University. Walker obtained his certifications as an athletic trainer (ATC) in 1999 and as a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) in 2000. He holds memberships in good standing with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Walker has been St. John’s head athletic trainer since 2002 and is a sitting committee member for the District of Columbia Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (DCSMAC) and the governmental affairs council representative for the District of Columbia Athletic Trainers’ Association (DCATA). When not working, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends, playing and listening to music and running in Rock Creek Park.

evin Plank, SJC Class of 1990 and MVP of the 1989 championship victory against DeMatha, is the founder, chairman and CEO of Under Armour, the originator of performance apparel. Plank began the company in 1996. Since then, Under Armour has been an industry leader. When Under Armour sold shares of the company for the first time in November 2005, the company posted the most successful initial public offering by an American company in five years, and the stock has continued to perform extraordinarily well. By 2013, the company was posting more than $2 billion in annual revenue. Under Armour is now an official supplier to Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, the National Football League and just about every Division I-A college football program. Under Armour holds roughly 80 percent of the market share in the compression performance apparel market. In 2006, Plank was named the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year in the Retail and Consumer Products category. In 2012, Forbes magazine listed him as No.
3 on the list of the most powerful CEOs in America under the age of 40. Plank has also been inducted into the Baltimore Business Journal ’s Hall of Fame. Plank has stayed close to St. John’s athletic program and has given motivational pre-game, halftime and post-game speeches to the players. Under Armour is also the official apparel sponsor of the St. John’s athletic program. In 2005, St. John’s became one of just three high

schools nationwide (the other two were in Indiana and Arizona) to wear Under Armour uniforms. Starting in 2006, the St. John’s varsity team began wearing Under Armour cleats as the official team shoe. In addition to the Under Armour uniforms and cleats, players at St. John’s wear Under Armour LooseGear microshorts, ColdGear mock turtlenecks, UA Tech T-shirts, receiver gloves, visors, performance socks and much more.

O
ur full-time performance coaches provide professional-level training to St. John’s athletes. These innovative, evidence-based strength and conditioning programs are customized by sport to give each athlete the tools they need to take their performance to the next level. St. John’s offers two performance training classes during the academic year that are open to any interested student. In addition, each athletic team receives sport-specific training year-round from the performance coaches.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE • STRENGTH TRAINING: Comprehensive training programs designed to target the entire body using multi-joint movements (including Olympic training). Athletes train in the Smith Weight Room, which houses cutting-edge weight and resistance training equipment. • CARDIOVASCULAR TRAINING: Interval training that incorporates stationary bikes, jump ropes, Woodway treadmill, stadium runs, sleds, prowlers and drills on the multi-purpose turf field.

• MOVEMENT TRAINING: Resistance training, plyometrics and mobility and flexibility exercises. • SPEED AND AGILITY TRAINING: Linear and multidirectional drills designed to teach athletes to move more effectively. • PREHABILITATION TRAINING: Sport-specific training to correct imbalances and weaknesses in the body that could lead to injury. • RECOVERY TRAINING: Athletes receive nutrition plans and learn myofascial release techniques designed to return their body to a normal state of mental and physical health in order to prepare them for the next practice or competition.
