T

he boys’ lacrosse program has high expectations for 2020. The program will add several talented opponents to its schedule, creating a new level of excitement leading up to the season. In the off-season, the team committed to a strength and conditioning program and individualized lacrosse skill development. Using St. John’s excellent facilities and under the guidance of sports medicine professionals, strength and conditioning coaches and lacrosse coaching staff, the Cadets have all the tools they need to develop as competitors.

St John’s season officially opens on March 3 at Georgetown Prep, and the first home game is on March 10 against Landon. The Cadets will then go on the road to face Calvert Hall and St. Paul’s. WCAC play begins March 24 at Gonzaga. Over Easter break, the team will travel to St. Christopher’s in Richmond and take on the Christian Brothers Academy at home. Regular season play will conclude at the U.S. Lacrosse facility in Sparks, MD, against Hill Academy.

COACHES VARSITY HEAD COACH WES SPEAKS

I

n November 2016, St John’s announced Wesley Speaks as the head coach for the boys’ lacrosse program. During his first three years with SJC, the Cadets have made two WCAC championship appearances and earned the program’s first ever WCAC title.

Prior to St. John’s, Speaks was the associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Gettysburg College. During his three seasons on staff, Gettysburg posted a 44-10 record, with a 21-3 record in the Centennial Conference. The team had a perfect conference record in each of his last two seasons and competed in the conference championships. Gettysburg played in the NCAA semifinals during the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Speaks coached 13 All-Americans at Gettysburg, helping to develop three first team honorees, 23 All-Centennial players and two Centennial Conference Players of the Year. The Bullets finished ranked sixth nationally in scoring defense for the 2016 season, allowing just 6.3 goals per game.

Before joining the Gettysburg staff, Speaks spent two years as defensive coordinator for McDaniel College. In 2012, he helped the team finish fourth in the Centennial Conference. Prior to McDaniel, Speaks coached the East Cobb Thunder Lacrosse Club based in Marietta, GA. Speaks also served as principal and managing director of 1v1Lacrosse for seven years, training high school and middle school players via clinics, small groups and private lessons in Atlanta, GA. His players have been selected as high school All-Americans and played for colleges such as Ohio State, University of Maryland, College Park, Notre Dame University, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, University of Richmond, U.S. Air Force Academy, University of North Carolina and the University of Virginia.

Speaks is a native of Fairfax, VA, and he played high school lacrosse for Robinson Secondary, where he was a two-time captain and All-American. He began his college career at Anne Arundel Community College, where he was part of a junior college national championship team and earned All-American honors. He finished his career at Towson University, where he was a three-year starter and team captain. Speaks earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Towson and a master’s degree in exercise science from McDaniel College.

He lives with his wife, Alexis, and their son, George, in Georgetown.

PERFORMANCE TRAINING

O

ur full-time performance coaches provide professional-level training to St. John’s athletes. These innovative, evidence-based strength and conditioning programs are customized by sport to give each athlete the tools they need to take their performance to the next level.

St. John’s offers two performance training classes during the academic year that are open to any interested student. In addition, each athletic team receives sport-specific training year-round from the performance coaches.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE • STRENGTH TRAINING: Comprehensive training programs designed to target the entire body using multi-joint movements (including Olympic training). Athletes train in the Smith Weight Room, which houses cutting-edge weight and resistance training equipment.

• CARDIOVASCULAR TRAINING: Interval training that incorporates stationary bikes, jump ropes, Woodway treadmill, stadium runs, sleds, prowlers and drills on the multi-purpose turf field.

• MOVEMENT TRAINING: Resistance training, plyometrics and mobility and flexibility exercises.

• SPEED AND AGILITY TRAINING: Linear and multidirectional drills designed to teach athletes to move more effectively.

• PREHABILITATION TRAINING: Sport-specific training to correct imbalances and weaknesses in the body that could lead to injury.

• RECOVERY TRAINING: Athletes receive nutrition plans and learn myofascial release techniques designed to return their body to a normal state of mental and physical health in order to prepare them for the next practice or competition.

THE UNDER ARMOUR CONNECTION

evin Plank, SJC Class of 1990 and MVP of the 1989 championship victory against DeMatha, is the founder, chairman and CEO of Under Armour, the originator of performance apparel.

Plank began the company in 1996. Since then, Under Armour has been an industry leader. When Under Armour sold shares of the company for the first time in November 2005, the company posted the most successful initial public offering by an American company in five years, and the stock has continued to perform extraordinarily well. By 2013, the company was posting more than $2 billion in annual revenue.

Under Armour is now an official supplier to Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, the NFL and just about every Division I-A college football program.

Under Armour holds roughly 80 percent of the market share in the compression performance apparel market.

In 2006, Plank was named as the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year in the Retail and Consumer Products Category. In 2012, Forbes magazine listed him as No. 3 on the list of the most powerful CEOs in Ameri-

ca under the age of 40. Plank has also been inducted into the Baltimore Business Journal’s Hall of Fame.

Plank has stayed close to the St. John’s athletic program and has given motivational pre-game, halftime and post-game speeches to the players.

Under Armour is also the official apparel sponsor of the St. John’s athletic program.

In 2013, St. John’s became one of the first high schools in the country to wear Under Armour singlets. In addition to the singlets, all practice and warm-up gear is made by Under Armour.

HISTORY OF ST. JOHN’S St. John’s continued to prosper for the next 30 years, until it became apparent that the Vermont Avenue facilities were no longer adequate. With further expansion in mind, the Brothers purchased the present campus bounded by Rock Creek Park. This property, together with the spacious mansion located there, provided sufficient space for the freshman classes and athletic events.

As the Vermont Avenue buildings became less useful, the Brothers decided to build a new school on the Military Road campus. The new St. John’s opened to more than 1,000 students in September 1959. In 1991, St. John’s became coeducational and made the JROTC program optional.

St. John’s has, since its inception, consistently played a prominent role on the Washington scene. St. John’s has produced thousands of graduates who have been leaders in the civil, religious and business life of the Washington area.

SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT

he second-oldest Christian Brothers’ school in the United States, St. John’s College was established in 1851 by Bro. John of Mary, FSC, and two other Christian Brothers in St. Matthew’s parish at 15th and H Streets. These three brothers had been members of the faculty of Calvert Hall College in Baltimore since its founding in 1845. Because of space limitations, the Brothers moved the school to Carroll Hall at 10th and G Streets in 1866 at the invitation of Father Walter. In 1868, the Brothers returned to St. Matthew’s parish at the request of Father Charles White, who had built a new school named St. Matthew’s Institute at the corner of 16th and L Streets. In 1878, the Brothers purchased the 1225 Vermont Avenue site of St. John’s from the estate of General Montgomery C. Meigs. In August of the same year, the construction of the building began. At first it was known as St. John’s Collegiate Institute and later, in 1887, it assumed its present title of St. John’s College. In that year, the college was incorporated under the District of Columbia statutes with the power to confer the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts. At the commencement of June 24, 1892, the bachelor’s degree was conferred on six young men.

Largely through the efforts of Bro. Elzear Alfred, FSC, the Cadet Corps was organized under the direction of the United States Army and Major J. Dapray in 1915. From its inception, the Cadet Regiment has won recognition as an outstanding military unit. For years it has participated in presidential parades. As the undergraduate departments of Catholic University and Georgetown University expanded, it was decided in 1921 by St. John’s Board of Trustees to discontinue the college department and devote the school facilities to secondary education alone.
