FROM THE PRESIDENT

DEAR ST. JOHN’S COMMUNITY,

As I complete my first year as St. John’s president, and we begin to look ahead to our 175th anniversary in 2026, I feel tremendous gratitude as part of this remarkable community. I am inspired daily not only by the energy and accomplishments of our students, but also by the deep commitment of our faculty, staff, alumni, and families to the mission of Catholic, Lasallian education.

Over the past several months, our students have demonstrated their drive, creativity, and passion in countless ways—both inside and outside the classroom. Last winter and spring, they seized opportunities to learn, serve, and compete on a global scale. From traveling abroad to immersing themselves in service trips domestically, to touring Historically Black Colleges and Universities and competing locally and nationally in sports, performing arts, and robotics, our students continue to expand their horizons.

I am particularly proud that our graduates continue to excel in college, often in leadership roles.

At least seven graduates were elevated to captain of their college teams for the 2025–26 school year.

The Class of 2025 carries on the tradition of strong matriculation results—at scale—earning $38 million in scholarships and admission to an incredibly and increasingly diverse group of schools, as well as traditional favorites like Boston College and Georgetown University, each of which admitted nine of our students in 2025.

The arts continue to thrive on campus, with a spirited performance of Mamma Mia!, a successful Gallery Night, and notable achievements in national music and creative writing competitions. In athletics, Cadet pride was on full display as our teams captured eight championships—including two WCAC, five DCSAA, and one MAGHL titles. We also celebrated four student-athletes being named DC Gatorade Players of the Year in girls’ soccer, baseball, boys’cross country, and softball.

Looking ahead, we are preparing for exciting enhancements. The acquisition of the adjacent Forest Side property on Military Road allows us to provide subsidized faculty housing and relocate several administrative offices—including business, advancement, and alumni relations—making space for additional classrooms on the main campus this fall. In addition, we have strengthened our leadership team with several key promotions focused on academics, counseling, student safety, and support services.

In this edition of the Scarlet & Grey, you’ll also meet extraordinary Cadets featured in our “Cadets Who Inspire” section—alumni who are pushing boundaries and making an impact in their fields. I’m especially pleased that we expanded our alumni outreach with a successful gathering in Delaware, providing a new opportunity for Cadets to connect and build community.

As you turn these pages, I know you’ll be as proud as I am of our students, faculty, and alumni, whose accomplishments reflect the values and excellence that define St. John’s.

WHERE CULTURE MEETS CUISINE: SENIORS EXPERIENCE THE SOUL OF FRANCE

By Phoebe Sood Last spring break, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to France as part of the scholars’ trip. At the end of junior year, we voted on our destination, and I was thrilled when Paris was chosen—I had always dreamed of going. As senior year began, between writing my senior thesis and developing our scholars project, I was both excited and curious about what the next 10 days in France would hold. I didn’t quite know what to expect, but I was eager to learn and explore.

After an eight-hour flight, we landed at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport. We quickly changed and then began to explore the city, and… I fell in love! I had the chance to try authentic crêpes, explore the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay, see the Eiffel Tower sparkle at night, and of course, enjoy plenty of shopping. From Paris, we took a train to Strasbourg, where I experienced one of my favorite meals in the charming district of La Petite France, surrounded by picturesque canals and cobblestone streets. After exploring Strasbourg and touring the European Parliament Building, we made a stop in Dijon. I especially loved visiting the local market and touring a mustard mill, where I tasted the many unique mustard flavors.

We spent our next few nights in Lyon, the third largest city in France. We toured historic homes and winding streets, sampled a variety of new foods, and took a scenic railway up to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière. Finally, we went to Annecy, a beautiful city surrounded by the Alps.

My friends and I enjoyed lunch from the local markets as we sat on benches by the water, taking in the view before setting off on a scenic cruise around the stunning lake. I was sad to leave, but I returned home with unforgettable memories, new friendships, and plenty of photos and souvenirs.

What made this trip especially meaningful for me was the balance between structured activities—like visiting museums, touring cathedrals, and exploring historical sites—and the freedom we had to choose how we spent our time.

As a French student, I loved the chance to put my language skills into practice, both in reading and speaking. Overall, I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to experience the rich history and culture of France while growing closer to my classmates along the way.

PARIS It was fun to visit the Louvre and Musee D’Orsay in Paris! At Musee D’Orsay we saw a great collection of impressionist artists, including Van Gogh’s self-portrait and Monet’s Water Lillies. At the Louvre, we saw older paintings. We had lots of time to wander and see super famous works like the Mona Lisa and Winged Victory. It was such a privilege to learn about the history of these works and appreciate them in person!

At Montparnasse, we took an elevator to the roof of the building and walked around both an indoor and outdoor area, where we were able to see the entirety of Paris in one view. It was especially interesting to see the unique layout of the city, as each block is a triangle. After a long day of walking, we spent time relaxing in the comfortable space at the top of the building.

STRASBOURG While in Strasbourg, we visited the European Parliament building (cover image), which is the official seat of the EP. We received our visitor badges and then took tours with a multimedia guide. There were many interactive exhibits, and I especially loved seeing the European parliamentary chamber (the Hemicycle). I participate in Model UN, so it was really cool to see and learn about this building!

-Phoebe Sood We had the opportunity to see our second Notre Dame of our trip. While visiting, we observed the intense Gothic architecture, the mechanical clock display, and floor grate for donations—all very different from Catholic churches in the U.S. The Notre Dame of Strasbourg had a unique appeal with its tall towers and dark silhouette and definitely stood out as the most impressive of the many Notre Dames we visited in France.

DIJON

We went to “La Moutarderie Fallot” in Dijon. There, we learned about the history of mustard in France, how the industry has changed over time, distinctions between species of mustard seeds, and the classifications of different mustard products. We toured one of the only factories that still uses real grindstones and sampled different flavors of authentic mustard. My biggest takeaway was that the French like their mustard VERY spicy!

LYON

While in Lyon, we had the opportunity to explore the historic Rue Saint-Jean and learn about the unique history and culture of the city. From ducking under archways to quietly moving through narrow torchlit passages, each step through this bustling Romanesque street felt like walking through the pages of a history book. Certainly, an experience to remember, though I would strongly recommend taking the cable car over the stairs!

The food tasting tour was unique and exciting! We explored Lyon and its lesser-known pathways, learned about what it means to be a local in the city, and ended the tour by sampling French candies, sausages, and beverages. It was fun to learn about the historical aspect of Lyon and its architecture.

SPRING BREAK WITH PURPOSE: EXPLORING, SERVING, AND GROWING Over spring break 2025, our students embraced opportunities far beyond the classroom. From cultural and language immersion experiences to service, and academic exploration, they expanded their horizons, deepened their learning, and lived out our mission in meaningful ways.

ANNUAL MODERN AND CLASSICAL LANGUAGES TRIP: ECUADOR

TEXAS BORDER SERVICE IMMERSION TRIP: PUTTING FAITH INTO ACTION

Thirty students and five faculty embarked on an unforgettable journey to Quito and the Galápagos for SJC’s annual modern and classical languages trip. They delved into the rich history and vibrant culture of Quito—one of the highest-altitude cities in the world. Then, in the breathtaking Galápagos, they encountered incredible wildlife, from playful sea lions and blue-footed boobies to majestic giant tortoises. The trip was a whirlwind of exploration, language immersion, touring, swimming, snorkeling, hiking, dining, and treasure hunting in local markets.

Nine students and two faculty traveled to the El Paso, TX, for a powerful service immersion experience, where they learned the social and legal intricacies of immigration. From sharing meals and stories with students from Lasallian Cathedral High School in El Paso, to interacting with seven bishops of North America and Cardinal Fabbio Baggio of Bassano del Grappa, Italy, the undersecretary of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, the students expanded their horizons and gained a deeper understanding of solidarity.

SPRING BREAK WITH PURPOSE: IN MOTION

INAUGURAL HBCU COLLEGE TOUR The Black Student Union proudly hosted the inaugural St. John’s HBCU college tour during spring break. Twenty-seven sophomore and junior students visited six prestigious Historically Black Colleges and Universities—Hampton University, North Carolina Central University, North Carolina A&T University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University, and Florida A&M University—where they engaged with SJC alumni and gained valuable insights into the rich history, culture, and opportunities HBCUs provide.

In addition to cultural immersion and service trips, studentathletes stayed focused during spring break—pushing themselves on the field, on the track, and on the water. From early morning practices to intense matchups, the boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams, outdoor track and field athletes, baseball players, and the crew team demonstrated grit, discipline, and a shared commitment to their teams.

Spring break wasn’t just about games, meets, and practices—it was an opportunity for growth. Whether working toward personal goals, strengthening their skills, or deepening team bonds, these Cadets made the most of their time together, demonstrating the value of commitment and purpose.

From Classroom to Community A PRINCIPAL’S LASTING LEGACY “The most important moments of any day happen in the classroom.”

There are some careers that feel more like callings—vocations central to a person’s identity. For Principal Christopher Themistos, education was never a choice; it was simply the path he was meant to walk.

It began at the College of the Holy Cross, where he found himself drawn to the teacher education office without fully understanding why. That instinct led to a lifelong commitment to education, one sharpened by his early exposure to Jonathan Kozol’s Amazing Grace, a profound exploration of inequality and need in urban schooling. The book left a lasting impression, inspiring him to be an agent of change within a system that shapes lives and defines futures.

After college, Themistos moved to Washington, DC, drawn by the vibrancy of the city and inspired by a semester spent interning in Congress during a Washington Semester Program. Though he arrived without a job, he soon found a place at St. John’s, thanks to a connection through Georgetown Preparatory School. During that time, he earned a master’s degree in educational policy and leadership from the University of Maryland, College Park. What began as an unexpected opportunity quickly became the foundation of a remarkable career.

In 2001, Themistos joined St. John’s as a social studies teacher, developing curriculum for three different courses and even teaching English for two years. His journey into administrative leadership

began when he became director of admissions, followed by academic dean, where he played a pivotal role in the school’s Middle States reaccreditation.

In 2013, he was named assistant principal for academic affairs and helped guide St. John’s into the future. During that time, he spearheaded St. John’s transition to a 1:1 educational technology curriculum and was instrumental in establishing the new Entrepreneurial Center for Innovation and Social Impact. As a key leader behind the 1:1 iPad program, he helped craft its core components and align the instructional technology for both practical applications and long-term academic goals.

In addition, he advised the president and the director of the Entrepreneurial Center, contributing to the vision and development of its curriculum and initiatives. “From the very beginning of his tenure as a teacher of history, Chris brought a spirit of innovation and a commitment to the Lasallian mission. In his leadership roles, Chris responded to the needs of the students by continuously advancing and enriching the curriculum while remaining faithful to the school’s mission,” expressed Jeff Mancabelli, St. John’s president 2010–24.

In 2016, Themistos became principal—and his impact has been remarkable. While the desire to influence change on a broader level inspired his move into leadership, he never lost sight of the classroom as the heart of a student’s education. “The most important moments of any day happen in

the classroom,” he often said, emphasizing that no administrative decision could ever replace the profound power of the teacherstudent relationship.

During his early years at St. John’s, Themistos’s commitment to mission was cemented through his formation with the Lasallian Leadership Institute (LLI), a three-year program that introduced him to the charism and legacy of the De La Salle Christian Brothers. “I didn’t know anything about Lasallian education before I came to St. John’s,” he admitted, but the experience transformed him. Surrounded by giants of the Lasallian world—former Superior General Br. John Johnston, Br. Gerard Rummery, and others—he came to embrace the humble, inclusive mission of the Brothers: to serve students through faith, education, and community.

The 12 virtues of a Lasallian educator became touchstones for Themistos’s own leadership—especially humility, prudence, and zeal. He led with a teacher’s heart, embodying servant leadership in every decision, every initiative, every relationship. “What I truly appreciate about Lasallian education is the way it allows students to be their authentic selves while discovering their passion and purpose as they prepare for the next chapter of their lives. It’s truly special to be part of a community where students and faculty bring such a wide range of gifts, talents, and life experiences. To me, that’s the heart of a family-centered

education—rooted in the meaningful relationship between teacher and student,” he said.

Mentors played a vital role along the way. Br. Tom Gerrow, FSC, gave him his first leadership opportunity, offering him the director of admissions role and showing him the interconnectedness of the school’s systems and activities. “It has been a blessing for me to have the opportunity to work with Chris. He is an amazing individual who has held many different positions at the school and has done a great job at all of them,” Gerrow commended. Br. Martin Zewe, FSC,—still teaching in his 80s—inspired him with unwavering dedication, while Br. Mike Andrejko, FSC, his predecessor, modeled the kind of decision-making and reflection that he would carry into his own principalship.

Themistos’s accomplishments are many: strengthening the faculty to be more mission-driven, enhancing inclusion through curriculum and programming, and cultivating beloved traditions like the froshmore dance and the reimagining of Founder’s Day as a joyful student celebration. A deeply symbolic moment came in 2020, when he conceived the idea and worked with former St. John’s president, Jeff Mancabelli, to install a bell in honor of the graduating class impacted

by Covid. Rooted in Lasallian tradition, the bell rings on the first day of school for the student body and the last day of classes

for seniors. It reminds the community that we are always and everywhere in God’s holy presence. He is also proud to be part of the team that restructured and reinvigorated the Cadet Corps Leadership Program, a defining part of SJC’s heritage.

But perhaps his proudest contribution has been fostering a school culture that nurtures each student’s unique gifts.

“St. John’s is a place where students come from so many different backgrounds with so many talents, and they grow together,” he often said. That growth—of the mind, the heart, and the spirit—was always his goal.

Along the way, St. John’s became more than a workplace for Themistos; it became a second home. In 2008, he met his future wife Laurie when she joined the school’s Student Life Office. They were married in 2010 and have two daughters, Caroline and Poppy. “St. John’s will always be like a second family,” he reflected. “I couldn’t be more grateful.”

Themistos was not only a devoted teacher and administrator, but also a lifelong learner. In 2023, he earned his doctorate in education from Northeastern University, with a focus on curriculum, teaching, learning, and leadership. His dissertation—exploring the teaching of writing across disciplines—reflected his deep commitment to collaborative, student-centered instruction.

Now, after 24 years of Lasallian service, Themistos is beginning a new chapter. He will return to his native Massachusetts to join the leadership team at Worcester Academy, a coed independent day and boarding school for grades 6–12. As dean of faculty and director of strategic initiatives, he will continue shaping the future of education—this time with a view of his alma mater, Holy Cross, just beyond his office window.

While he may be leaving St. John’s, the legacy he leaves behind will continue—in every lesson taught, every tradition upheld, and every student who believes in their ability to make a difference.

“Over the years, Dr. Themistos was not only a principal but also one of my biggest role models due to his strong and devoted leadership. Coming into the role of SGA president made me very nervous, but Dr. Themistos helped make that transition seamless, offering an outpouring of advice and support. He was a pillar to the community through his passion and love for St. John’s and his impact will certainly remain there for years to come,” shared London Wright-Porch ’25

Chris and I worked together for a long time, and no matter what conversation we had, his focus was the same—what will be best for the students and our community? Chris led with a passion for growth and his impact will be felt in our classrooms for years to come. He empowered teachers and showed them through his actions what it means to be big brothers and sisters to the students entrusted to our care.

Chris has made me a better leader, but more importantly a better teacher and for that I will always be grateful.

I’ve known Chris for a long time—when he was academic dean and my oldest son’s history teacher. Chris was so good to me when I became a faculty member. I knew little about technology since I had been a stay-at-home mom for so long, but he reassured me that I would be fine. He has given me good advice over the years and valued my opinion as a faculty member as well as a mom. He will truly be missed.

Dr. Themistos has been SUCH a gift to the Mothers’ Club. His countless hours serving as our moderator has enabled us to fulfill and be successful in our mission. He is the ultimate partner and leader— patient, accessible, supportive, encouraging, grateful, kind, thoughtful and incredibly dependable. I think we “sang” it best when we bid him farewell at his final Mothers’ Club meeting...

The first thing I think about with Chris is his constant support and willingness to serve the faculty, staff, and students at SJC. One of the key tenants of a Lasallian educator is commitment to service.

Chris’s commitment to having an open door to allow students and teachers to come to him with any issue shows how he models his leadership after La Salle—by prioritizing service to fellow teachers and his students.

Chris Themistos and I began our Lasallian journey together at SJC at roughly the same time. From day one, his desire to serve the students, meet them where he found them, and touch their hearts was unmatched.

Each year, Chris tried to become the best version of himself for the sake of those entrusted to his care. I have profoundly fond memories of our times together on Kairos and feel so blessed to have had such a colleague and friend accompany me through my SJC Lasallian vocation!

What I loved most about Dr. Themistos was how approachable he was.

Every time I would see him in the halls, I was never afraid to say hello. This taught me that he wasn’t just a principal—he was an ally. A friend. A person who, like us, is trying to live out the character of Christ in his everyday walk. Dr. Themistos— being so willing to close the gap between us and him—made him a phenomenal principal, and I pray nothing but the best for him as he moves on in life.

Advancing the Mission IAN MACINNES TAKES ON NEW ROLE AS PRINCIPAL

S

t. John’s is proud to welcome Ian MacInnes as our new principal.

A dedicated educator and mission-driven leader, he is deeply committed to faith, academic excellence, and student growth. A member of the St. John’s community since 2021, he steps into this new role with a clear vision for the future and a heart firmly rooted in Lasallian, Catholic education. We sat down with him to learn more about his perspective, passion, and plans for the journey ahead.

What brought you to St. John’s?

My journey to St. John’s began thanks to close friend and longtime SJC math teacher and alum, Kevin Morse ’10. His passion for teaching sparked my interest in education. Soon after, my former elementary school principal offered me a math teaching position at St. Jane de Chantal in Bethesda—a life-changing opportunity I embraced, spending the next five years teaching Algebra I and II to 7th and 8th graders.

During that time, I discovered a deep love for teaching and pursued a master’s degree in educational leadership, building on my undergraduate background in business administration and strategic communications. I also began exploring independent schools and leadership opportunities.

In 2021, when a math position opened at St. John’s, I applied, expressing not only my enthusiasm for teaching, but also my interest in leadership. Although I was initially hired to teach algebra, after my first

year, I was appointed dean of students. I then served in a dual role—teaching and leading as class dean—before transitioning to a full-time dean position, which I have held for the past two years.

What have you enjoyed most about your work with the students?

What I’ve loved most is the opportunity to build strong, personal relationships with students. At St. John’s, the dean role is more than just enforcing rules—it’s about being a student advocate, someone who looks out for each student’s well-being and growth.

Even when I have to correct behavior or uphold school policies, I always start with a simple check-in: How are you doing? What’s going on in your life? That conversation might lead me to speak with a coach, make a call home, or simply learn that there’s more going on in that student’s life than meets the eye. That personal touch reminds students they are valued and cared for and builds a foundation of trust and respect. It also makes a lasting impact. Even students who’ve received a detention still come by my office to share updates on college decisions, invite me to performances, or just catch up after a game.

As we move toward a more communityfocused schedule next year, I’m confident we’re building on a strong foundation. That sense of connection and care has always been a part of St. John’s, and I’ve been grateful to contribute to that as a class dean.

How has the Lasallian charism impacted your various roles?

One of the most powerful ways the Lasallian charism has shaped my work is through the idea of meeting students where they are. That phrase has stuck with me since I first arrived at St. John’s. While it may not be the central tenet of the Lasallian charism, it captures the essence of how we’re called to lead, teach, and care for our students.

For me, that means looking beyond surfacelevel behaviors and really getting to know each student—not just academically, but emotionally, spiritually, and personally. The Lasallian lens reminds me that students are here to grow—and growth means making mistakes. Our job isn’t to expect perfection on day one, especially from freshmen. It’s to walk with them through the learning process, so that by the time they graduate, they’ve not only developed in knowledge and character, but they’re ready to lead and serve others.

The Lasallian charism affirms that education at St. John’s is a holistic journey.

It’s about forming the whole person so they can, as we say, enter to learn and leave to serve. That mission inspires everything I do.

How have you engaged with the wider St. John’s community beyond your teaching and administrative duties?

When I joined the Cadet community, a student asked me to be the Fencing Club moderator, so that was my first extracurricular activity. I have also been an assistant coach for the swim & dive team

the last couple of years and chaperone the performing arts trips when I have time in my schedule. Another activity I have truly enjoyed over the last year is helping with the shadow visit presentations in De La Salle Chapel. These talks give prospective parents additional information about St. John’s, while providing them with the opportunities to meet school leadership and ask questions.

How would you describe your leadership style?

I lead by example. I’ve always responded best to leaders who walk the walk, and that’s how I aim to lead—never asking someone to do something I wouldn’t do myself or haven’t already done. My leadership is grounded in humility, empathy, and collaboration.

Listening is a key part of how I lead.

Whether it’s feedback, advice, or even criticism, I take time to understand where someone is coming from. That understanding helps me better support and motivate each person in a way that’s authentic to who they are. Just as we ask teachers to get to know their students, I believe it’s my responsibility to get to know the teachers—not only what challenges them professionally, but what motivates them personally.

I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all leadership style. Every person is different, and effective leadership means building genuine relationships. Teachers are the ones living out the school’s mission every day in their classrooms, and my role is to uplift and support them so they can do that well.

I also emphasize positivity and being solution-oriented. I believe strongly in validating people’s feelings—those emotions are real and important—but then working together to ask: What’s our next step? I want to be a partner in moving forward, not just a director from above.

Ultimately, my leadership is about service, trust, and shared purpose—driven by relationships, grounded in example, and committed to growth.

In your view, what distinguishes St. John’s from other schools?

Several things stand out to me.

First, the opportunities for students to get involved here are incredible. We have outstanding athletic programs and talented athletes, but what I really love is the equal spotlight on all types of student involvement. Our arts programs, for example, are phenomenal. If you’ve seen a school play, you know the students pour their heart and soul into it—and so do the teachers, musicians, and staff who support them. The same goes for robotics, speech

and debate, Model UN, the Sabre News, the literary magazine—there are so many avenues for students to find their place and pursue their passions.

Inclusivity is also part of what makes St. John’s exceptional. A shy freshman who doesn’t play a sport can still find a meaningful connection through a club or activity. And it’s not about being the best singer, the top athlete, or the lead actor—it’s about discovering where you belong. Our counselors, deans, and faculty are great at encouraging students to take that first step.

Sometimes it’s just a nudge like, “Hey, I know someone in Eco Club. Why don’t I introduce you?” That small act can lead to a meaningful path forward.

What’s even more exciting for the students is that they can create something new here.

If a student has an idea for a club—say, starting a Fishing Club—they can do it.

As long as they find a faculty moderator and a few peers, they can build something lasting and put their own stamp on the community. That level of ownership is empowering.

St. John’s is just a real place. We have students, families, and educators from all different walks of life, coming together with a shared purpose. The sense of community here is genuine and strong—it’s not something we just talk about; it’s something you feel every day.

What initiatives are you already working on for the 2025–26 school year?

Our biggest initiative for next year is the launch of a new schedule, designed to create meaningful “community time” for students during the school day.

Currently, many students are so busy with sports, rehearsals, tutoring, or academic obligations before and after school that they don’t have the opportunity to participate in clubs or other extracurriculars. Our goal is to change that. Community time will replace the traditional homeroom and carve out dedicated periods during the school day for students to engage in clubs and enrichment activities—like yearbook, Film Club, or fencing—without having to choose between those and academic responsibilities.

What excites you about becoming principal, and what do you plan to accomplish in your first year?

What excites me most about becoming principal is the opportunity to help shape the character and lives of young men and women. I left the business world for education, because I found true joy in helping others grow—not just academically, but as people. That passion ignited during my time at a Catholic high school, where I experienced a mission-driven community that focused on developing the whole person. I see that same sense of purpose here, especially in our mission to serve students from diverse backgrounds and provide them with a human and Christian education.

This school isn’t just producing test scores—it’s forming human beings. My goal is to ensure that every student who walks through our doors matures, discovers who they are, and graduates ready to contribute meaningfully to the world—whether through college, trade, sports, or work.

In my first year, I plan to focus on two key priorities: 1. Enhancing student support and engagement: I want to ensure that students not only have access to academic and emotional support, but also real opportunities to thrive outside the classroom. Whether it’s robotics, theatre, athletics, or STEM programs, I want our offerings to be meaningful—not just something listed on a brochure.

Students should feel that their interests are genuinely supported and nurtured.

2. Building a stronger faculty community: As a former teacher, I know that educators are at the heart of a student’s experience.

I want to create more opportunities for faculty collaboration across departments— breaking down silos and encouraging a unified, mission-driven culture. When teachers feel supported, valued, and connected, that energy translates directly to our students. I often say, “You can’t pour from an empty bucket.” If we expect teachers to give their best to students, we have to invest in their well-being and sense of purpose.

I see this role as a chance to build a school community where both students and staff feel seen, supported, and inspired to become the best versions of themselves.

We also know that students need balance.

Research shows that adolescents benefit from brain breaks and physical activity throughout the day. That’s why the new schedule will include a 60-minute midday block, split into two distinct parts: 30 minutes for lunch and 30 minutes of flexible time. During that flex time, students can meet with teachers, make up assessments, visit the library, or simply take a break—go outside, move around, or reset before continuing the day.

This schedule shift is about more than logistics—it’s about student well-being and creating space for a fuller, more balanced high school experience. We want students not only to succeed academically, but also to feel seen, supported, and part of a thriving school community.

Another focus for next year is supporting freshmen as they transition into the St. John’s community. Too often, schools assume that once students are accepted, they’re automatically integrated—but there’s a real adjustment period, and not every student makes that transition smoothly without intentional support.

We’re working on initiatives that clearly communicate what it means to be a St. John’s student. This includes setting expectations and providing practical guidance from day one—how to write professional emails, show leadership in small ways like picking up trash, or simply being courteous by greeting others and removing ear buds when speaking with adults. These small habits reinforce a culture of respect for all and help freshmen feel truly connected to the community.

ENHANCES FACILITIES, SUPPORTS FACULTY, AND STRENGTHENS ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

As part of St. John’s long-term, mission-driven strategic plan to strengthen and expand our facilities, faculty, and programs, we are pleased to announce the acquisition of the Forest Side property at 2701 Military Road NW. The building serves several key functions. Most notably, it provides 20 subsidized apartments for faculty, helping St. John’s attract and retain top-tier teaching talent by addressing the high cost of living in the region.

In addition to faculty residences, Forest Side houses non-academic offices, including the Business Office and the Advancement and Alumni Office.

Relocating these departments frees up valuable space on the main campus, resulting in new classrooms and additional faculty offices—further enhancing academic support spaces and lowering class size.

SJC Appoints New Trustees MICHAEL BORGER ’07 Michael Borger is a vice president with Donohoe Commercial Real Estate. In his current position, he manages a portfolio of 60-plus retail, commercial, and multifamily assets in Washington, DC, and the surrounding metro area.

He manages budgets, reviews financial reports, oversees construction of historic properties, and handles leasing and renovations for retail, office, and apartment spaces in Arlington, VA, and Washington, DC. Prior to Donohoe, he was a vice president with Borger Management, Inc, and was a principal in the management, development, and acquisitions of the firm. He transitioned to Donohoe after the two companies

merged in 2022. He is an active member of AOBA (Apartment & Office Building Association) and recently served as the co-chair of the Emerging Leaders Council.

Prior to Donohoe and Borger Management, he worked for Southern Management, Inc. and a private equity firm in New York City.

Borger earned a bachelor’s degree in management and an MBA from Manhattan College, where he was honored with the Joseph J. Gunn Alumni Medal for leadership, service, and character, and was inducted into the Pen and Sword Society for academic excellence and leadership. A former St. John’s cadet colonel, he resides in NW Washington, DC.

NICHOLAS DESARNO ’97 Nicholas DeSarno is CEO and co-owner of Rock Spring Contracting. He is involved in all aspects of running the company with a direct focus on business development, financials, and operations. Under his leadership, Rock Spring has grown to be one of the largest and most successful subcontracting companies in the mid-Atlantic. The company specializes in commercial drywall ranging from office and base building to mission critical data center construction.

MONSIGNOR JOHN J. ENZLER ’65 Monsignor John Enzler, affectionately known as Father John, is the past president and CEO of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington, an agency that annually helps more than 150,000 people in the Washington-metropolitan region. A native Washingtonian, Fr. John has more than 52 years of experience as a priest, leader, and advocate, serving the needs of the most vulnerable in our community. His commitment to the poor and underserved extends beyond his work for Catholic Charities to include service on the boards of many national and local organizations such as Potomac Community Resources, Order of Malta, Christ Child Society, and Loras College among many others. He has been active among

several local interfaith networks, where he is a recognized and respected figure.

Fr. John was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Washington in 1973 and was named Monsignor

by Pope John Paul II in 1985. Prior to his July 2011 appointment by Cardinal Donald Wuerl to lead Catholic Charities, he served as pastor at three parishes— most recently at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Washington, DC. In 2012, Washingtonian magazine named him a “Washingtonian of the Year.”

On September 24, 2015, Fr. John welcomed Pope Francis to meet with and be among more than 500 people being helped by Catholic Charities, an iconic moment in the agency’s history.

Since July 2023, Fr. John has served as St. John’s chaplain, where he has introduced new initiatives in charity outreach, enhanced retreats, strengthened interfaith relationships, and launched the OCIA program—welcoming 15 students and faculty (and counting) into full communion with the Catholic Church.

BROTHER ERNEST MILLER, FSC Brother Ernest J. Miller is a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, commonly known as the De La Salle Christian Brothers, founded in 1680 in Reims, France, by John Baptist de La Salle, patron saint of teachers.

He currently serves as director of the Adrien Nyel Project within the Office for Mission and Ministry in the Lasallian District of Eastern North America. The Project’s animating motif is the vocation to teach, facilitating mission education and formation in the Lasallian charism and heritage for teachers and other educators in the Lasallian ministries from Toronto to Puerto Rico. In addition, Br. Ernest engages in other spaces to support educators in the field of Catholic education.

His past ministry assignments include five years as vice president for mission and two additional years as vice president for mission, diversity, and inclusion at La Salle University, as well as teaching roles at three Lasallian secondary schools: La Salle College High School near Philadelphia, West Catholic Preparatory High School in Philadelphia, and Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh.

In 2010, he was the convenor of the Lasallian Convocation on the Rights of the Child at the United Nations in New York. In 2022, he was a capitulant in the 46th General Chapter of his institute.

Br. Ernest holds a doctor of ministry degree from the Catholic Theological Union in

Chicago; master’s degrees in international affairs from The George Washington University, liberal studies from Georgetown University, and education from La Salle University; and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Loyola University New Orleans.

He previously served on St. John’s Board of Trustees from 2007–2012.

THE SEA IS WHERE THE SKY SHOULD BE

By Gigi Ghatt The sea is where the sky should be. It’s been like this since seven years ago. I’m sixteen now, but I still remember what happened.

The world wasn’t always like this.

I’m sure that I’m the only one who realizes. Maybe others realize it too, but are too afraid to say it out loud. Maybe. I don’t know. What I do know is that on that day, the world went through a sudden irreversible change.

God came down to earth, and they killed it. Maybe it wasn’t truly a god.

I don’t know, but the end of the world followed, and from the ashes of that world, a new one sprouted up: A godless world where the sea is where the sky should be and the sky is where the sea should be.

I’m acquainted with my nonexistence. The nonexistence of everything, really. The world I knew is dead. The god I knew is dead.

I’m still alive, and I’m the only one who remembers how things are supposed to be.

My mother has given up on me.

She doesn’t bring me to collect fish where the sea dips down enough to touch anymore. I was no good at holding the fish basket, anyway.

It’s really for the better. I still wish she’d listen to me, but I’ve always known she wouldn’t. I know how everything will end up. I know how this will end. I should’ve stopped trying ages ago.

School is a special brand of torture too. My peers act with a special form of cruelty I’ve only seen in foreign tv shows. Nothing will change. They won’t change. I know it. They won’t change as long as that’s what most people are doing and as long as there’s no one to stop them. It’s not that different from how the world used to be.

Only more extreme. They’re only this cruel to me too. I’m thinking it’s because I know what the world used to be. Like the universe is getting its revenge on me for knowing all its secrets.

The teachers tell us about how back in the olden days, people would use baskets to catch the rain falling up from the sky. Of course I know it isn’t true. Not exactly. This world has only existed for seven years. It hasn’t lived long enough to have such a rich history, but it’s fun to think about. I hardly think of fun things anymore. I won’t ever again.

They still believe in a god here. I dare not tell anyone that it is long gone and dead. If news got out, everyone in the world would be fighting to take up the mantle.

They’d all realize what the vacant spot means, and they’d all think themselves deserving. No man should take the seat of god. I know this. That’s what this test is for. To see if I’m worthy of existence.

The day darkens, and I know what has to happen, but I want to see something first, so I go to the fishing spot. The fish swim around cluelessly, having no idea what’s soon to happen. I stick my hand in the water. A little water splashes out from the sea and lands on my face. It gets in my eyes, but I don’t blink it out. Then, in a practiced motion, I hop into the water and begin to swim. I swim up and up and up. Deeper and deeper and

deeper. The seafloor is merely an illusion. It’s a fact so pointless it would not have existed if I hadn’t mentioned it, so I swim past it.

I swim for what seems like hours. I swim for what seems like days. Water completely fills my lungs, but I’m not real, so I don’t die. Instead, I continue to swim upwards.

I swim so long that I start to wonder what might be up there. It might be heaven. It might even be the normal world. Maybe this new world is what was at the bottom sea. There’s not much time now.

I reach the surface. What I thought were days of swimming I’m now sure were mere minutes instead.

One-hundred twenty four seconds.

The bubble of water pops around me. My hair clings to my skin. And then I look forward and see it.

A throne and a crown.

And I swim back down.

And I find myself wondering if I left because I knew I would or because I thought myself unworthy.

by Bemnet Yiesak I wander around the beauty supply store, a place filled with promises in every aisle.

Mango, Coconut, and Hibiscus blend, swirling in the air, With a slight trace of Shea Butter on my fingertips.

I pause at the never ending shelves overflowing with small treasures: Leave-in conditioners, curling creams, and misting sprays promising shine and volume.

The ladies at the counter laugh and tease, “You’re still taking your time, aren’t you?”

I remember their familiar faces, hands on hips, and fascinating hairstyles from my childhood.

Box braids flowing like ribbons, Vibrant wigs and cascading hair extensions.

Yiesak took home a Silver Key in poetry for “Scents of Home.”

They ask, offering a bottle of marshmallow fluff, “Have you tried this before?”

I smile, inhale the scents of Honey, Vanilla, and the warm aroma of Argan Oil, and let the memories unfold— my mother’s hands on my scalp, her gentle hymns, her love woven into each of my braids.

Imagining how each one would transform my crown, One moment the Queen of Sheba,royal and commanding, then Madam C.J. Walker, visionary and trailblazer, the next.

Just when I think I’ve come up for air another product pulls me back into a beautiful world of memories— Sitting on the white tile floor, reading Amharic while the scent of Aloe Vera and my mother swims in the air.

Every jar tells a tale, every scent brings back a souvenir.

In this sacred place, time escapes my grasp.

Time flies as conversations and laughter fill the air— their voices stitching together a quilt of belonging.

Once I discover the perfect item, a treasure, I pause to savor that moment.

This beauty supply store is more than just products— it is a community, A community where every visit is a reminder, and a celebration of my identity.

During spring break, 27 sophomores and juniors had the incredible opportunity to visit 7 prestigious Historically Black Colleges and Universities. At each campus, they engaged with SJC alumni and gained valuable insights into the rich history, culture, and opportunities that HBCUs offer.

HISTORIC WIN: BIEGALSKI ’87 RECEIVES GEORGE HEVESY MEDAL FOR NUCLEAR CHEMISTRY Professor Steven Biegalski has been honored with the prestigious 2025 George Hevesy Medal, the highest international accolade for career achievements in applied nuclear and radiochemistry.

This marks a historic moment as Biegalski becomes the first engineer to receive this award in its 57-year history and only the seventh American to be recognized. The medal celebrates Biegalski’s groundbreaking research in nuclear analytical chemistry, particularly his development of comprehensive methods for analyzing radioxenon signatures and creating isotopically pure radioxenon samples, which have significantly advanced global nuclear monitoring and nuclear accident response efforts.

AZZI FUDD ’21 LIGHTS UP THE FINAL FOUR On April 6, in a dazzling display of skill and determination, Fudd was named Most Outstanding Player of the 2025 Final Four. Leading her team to an impressive 82–59 victory over South Carolina in the championship game, Fudd scored a remarkable 24 points, solidifying her status as a true star on the court. Her performance was nothing short of outstanding! Fudd will return as team captain while pursuing her master’s degree in business.

BRANDEN JACOBS-JENKINS ’02 WINS PULITZER PRIZE FOR PURPOSE Branden Jacobs-Jenkins won the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play Purpose.

The Pulitzer Board praised it as a “skillful blend of drama and comedy that probes how different generations define heritage.” The play, which opened in Chicago in March 2024 and began its Broadway run in February, also won two Tony Awards— Best Play and Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play.

DOWNEY ’92 POUNDS THE PAVEMENT FOR CANCER RESEARCH

Mike Downey is putting in the miles.

He committed to run 50 marathons in 50 weeks to raise money for Children’s National in honor of his late niece Ella who lost her battle with pediatric brain cancer. On December 7, Downey completed his 50th marathon.

SHARING HISTORY Kevin Hymel ’85, WWII historian and author of Patton’s War, reunited with fellow alum Jim Perrus ’84 at the 2025 Gettysburg Film Festival. Hymel, a historian at Arlington National Cemetery, leads European battlefield tours, while Perrus, a WWII enthusiast, works with the University of Maryland Alumni Association and serves as an NHL off-ice official.

Katherine DeStefano ’06 is now general counsel and chief human resources officer for the V Foundation for Cancer Research. “I’m honored to join the V Foundation and advance its mission to achieve Victory Over Cancer®,” said DeStefano.

“Having witnessed my mother bravely face cancer, this work is deeply personal. I’m eager to help further the V Foundation’s impact and support lifesaving research.”

In January, Tampa Bay Buccaneer Rakim Jarrett returned to campus and presented coaches Pat ’93 and Mike ’06 Ward with a signed, game-worn jersey. Jarrett was a consensus five-star recruit in high school, earning first team All-WCAC, first team All-Met, SJC football’s Mush Dubofsky Award, and played in the Under Armour All-American Game.

WEDDING BELLS Luke Garrett ’15 and Kaia Hubbard were married in Portland, OR, on Saturday, June 21, 2025. Luke is an editor/reporter at NPR News and Kaia is a reporter for CBS News.

An excerpt from the valedictory address Having faith is hard, especially on the bad days. But St. John’s taught me that you are never alone. That is the power of the Lasallian community– and you can hear it when we all say, “St. John Baptist De La Salle, pray for us,” and “Live Jesus in our hearts, forever.” Everyone in this room is here for you, and we are all a part of the same family. This is why we are meant to “leave to serve.” I didn’t understand that before I came to St. John’s, but that is what makes the Lasallian education so meaningful.

I am so grateful to be a part of this community.

St. John’s is a truly special place, and I will miss it so much. I mean, at what other school would you have a Coast Guard helicopter land on your front lawn on a Tuesday morning?

But what we gained here at St. John’s will never leave us. I urge you to remember to focus on the important stuff—sharing memories with the people around you. Remember that what you gained in your high school experience is not any medal, award, or recognition from someone else. Nobody else can define success for you. Enjoy the process, because that is all you can control.

I have no idea what comes next. And I’m not qualified to tell you how to face it. But I know that as long as we lean on each other and stay true to our principles and goals, we are going to make a positive change in the world.
