LETTER TO THE ST. JOHN’S COMMUNITY

Welcome to the pages of the St. John’s Annual Report. Inside, you will discover how the community of St. John’s comes together and invests in the education of our students. Some of the gifts provide support to students in need of tuition assistance, while other donations are used to create curricular and cocurricular opportunities that make it possible for students to refine their talents and reach for success in college. Also, we have the listing of all of the donors to the Campaign for Arts, Mission and Ministry that came to a close in 2017.

St. John’s strength as an institution rests in the support of its community. Through the gifts recorded in this report, St. John’s is able to renovate and expand the facilities, offer tuition assistance to qualified students and create dynamic curricular and cocurricular programs. These educational values attract a robust and diverse applicant pool, providing St. John’s with students who bring a broad range of talents to the classroom and beyond.

Further, as a Lasallian school, St. John’s is committed to maintaining the lowest tuition among its peer institutions, while also having an ample budget to provide financial aid to families in need.

The Campaign for Arts, Mission and Ministry came to a successful close with the dedication of the new facilities on May 5. More than 350 donors set a record for the broadest support of a capital campaign in St. John’s history and proved what St. John’s can do when more members of the community invest in their school. If you are one of the many who donated to this campaign, please check the recognition pages to see that you are listed properly for the plaque that will be permanently displayed in the Borger Promenade.

This year, we are using some of the pages of this report to demonstrate how your investment in St. John’s impacts the students. Through the wide variety of programs and activities at St. John’s, every student every day is challenged to open their minds, unlock new talents and develop as leaders with Lasallian values. These opportunities are either born out of your support or enhanced by your gifts. St. John’s serves as an outstanding example of what can be accomplished when a community pools its resources to provide students with a Catholic education in the Lasallian tradition.

Mary Ellen Degnan-Burke Scholarship Fund

St. John’s is grateful to those benefactors who have contributed to the school’s endowment funds. Endowed funds provide a permanent source of income to the school. In order for the school to continue providing a high quality college preparatory education, St. John’s endowment must continue to grow.

George and Catherine Aydinian Scholarship Fund Established in 2011 with love and gratitude to our parents for their generosity and dedication, by sons Gene ’68 and John ’71.

Benilde Program Operational Fund Established in 2008 to assist with the additional costs of the Benilde Program.

James J. Brogan ’70 Scholarship Fund Established by the Brogan family in 2012.

This fund is created in loving memory of James Brogan, a graduate and former teacher at St. John’s, by his family.

This scholarship provides support to deserving students.

Bro. Timothy Dean Scholarship Fund Established in memory of Bro. Timothy Dean, FSC. The core of this scholarship was based on contributions from the Class of 1971.

Established in 2007 through a donation from the Burke Family. This scholarship is given with preference to those students from singleparent families.

Epstein Family Scholarship Fund Established in recognition of the longstanding friendship between the Epstein family and St. John’s. This scholarship is dedicated to inspiring religious diversity and tolerance.

ENDOWMENT FUND SPOTLIGHT:

THE CLASS OF 1971 AND THE BRO. TIMOTHY DEAN SCHOLARSHIP FUND

In the fall of 2011, the Class of 1971 came together for their 40th reunion. As the classmates and friends reunited to plan the event throughout the year, they decided that they wanted commemorate their milestone in a permanent way that would also benefit St. John’s current students. Spearheaded

by Mike Harper ’71, the class decided to establish the Bro. Timothy Dean Scholarship Fund in honor of the teacher and Christian Brother who had meant so much to them during their time at St. John’s.

The scholarship fund was formally established in 2012, and the class has continued to contribute to it faithfully during the past five years. Today the fund is worth more than $100,000, and it supports students in need during their time at St. John’s.

“When we are involved in fundraising or preparations for events, I always remember something my father-in-law once told me. His words of wisdom were that ‘many hands make light work,’ meaning if everyone pitches in and does their part, it makes the goal a lot easier to achieve,” Harper said. “The Bro. Timothy Dean Scholarship Fund follows that same thought. Reaching $100,000 has been achieved by having a lot of my classmates participate, not just one or two big donors. Hopefully, with continued participation in the future, the Class of 1971 will be able to increase the fund to $250,000 and beyond. That is what we will strive to achieve.”

James “Bubba” Healy Scholarship Fund

Established in 2003 by former students in honor of Mr. Ferry, alumnus, devoted teacher and coach of 35 years at St. John’s. This is an academic scholarship awarded to students with exceptional math skills.

Established in 2008 through a generous gift by Earl Griffin ’39 in honor of Joe Gallagher ’39, former teacher and coach at St. John’s.

Established by the Class of 1955 in memory of their classmate.

Sgt. Maj. Vincent L. Fisher Scholarship Fund Established in 2011 by CSM Vincent Fisher’s former students in honor of his many years of service to the students and families of the St. John’s community. This annual award goes to a member of the Cadet Corps who also contributes to the school through extracurricular activities.

Marge Gasser Memorial Award This fund was established in 1998 by the Gasser Family in honor of Marge, former Mothers’ Club president and mother of four St. John’s graduates: Timothy ’74, Mark ’75, Jeffrey ’79 and Jonathan ’80. This annual award honors an individual who is an excellent educator and has shown dedicated service to St. John’s and its students. The St. John’s Mothers’ Club presents the award.

James and Kathryn FitzPatrick, Sr. Scholarship Fund

Established in 2005 by a grateful friend in appreciation and memory of two very special people, James and Kathryn FitzPatrick, parents of James ’55, Thomas ’57, Dorothy, Kathleen and Susan.

General Scholarship Fund

David Flynn Memorial Scholarship Fund Established in 2007 by a grateful friend in appreciation and memory of a special person, David Flynn, son of John T. Flynn ’61.

Bro. Thomas Gerrow Scholarship Fund Established in 2010 in honor of Bro. Tom’s 16 years of outstanding service as president of St. John’s for the purpose of providing financial assistance to St. John’s students who show exemplary leadership skills.

Charles T. and Helen D. Hellmuth Scholarship Fund Established in memory of Charles T. Hellmuth. Charlie was a 1944 St. John’s graduate and very proud of his association with the school. The scholarship is in remembrance of the solid education and ethical principles instilled in him by the Christian Brothers during his formative years. Charlie used his St. John’s experience as a stepping stone, graduating magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame and then starting a successful insurance and employee benefits business. It was Charlie’s wish that this fund provide future students the same opportunity that he received to propel them to success in college and the rest of their lives.

Bro. Dominic Luke Endowment Fund The Bro. Dominic Luke Endowment Fund is designated for faculty enrichment and was established in 1989.

Established in 2008 by the Class of 1955 in honor of Sgt. Maj. Michael J. Hackett in recognition of the spirit and values he instilled in his students during the nearly four decades that he was the pivotal force in the Cadet Corps program at St. John’s.

This endowed scholarship was established in memory of Jerry and Rose Maiatico through the kindness of the Maiatico family.

William J. Froelich Class of 1922 Memorial Fund Jeff and Rebecca Fuge Scholarship Fund The Jeff and Rebecca Fuge Scholarship has been established for the benefit of incoming ninth-grade students from Catholic feeder schools with older siblings already attending St. John’s.

James C. Gaffney ’52 Scholarship Fund The friends and family of James C. Gaffney ’52 established this fund in 2010 to aid families in need of tuition assistance.

The fund is created in loving memory of James Gaffney ’52, brother of Richard ’53, Thomas ’56, Leo ’58, Joseph ’63, John ’63 and David ’63 and father of James (Chris) ’81 and Mike ’83, for his many years of unceasing loyalty and dedication to St. John’s and its mission. For many years, their father, Dr. Leo B. Gaffney, served as team physician and cared for the Christian Brothers at St. John’s.

Archbishop Philip M. Hannan ’31 Endowed Scholarship Fund Established in 2005 by the St. John’s community in grateful appreciation for the immeasurable support and dedication of Archbishop Hannan to the students of St. John’s. This endowed fund provides scholarship support for deserving students.

John Harper, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund Established in 1990 by his wife, Dr. Mary Angela Harper, and their three sons, John III ’69, Michael ’71 and Dennis ’75 in memory of John Harper, Jr.

Mr. and Mrs. John Hassett ’70 Scholarship Fund

Ada Harris Maley Scholarship Fund Command Sergeant Major John W. McConnell Scholarship Fund Established at the 2015 Cadet Corps Centennial in honor of CSM John W. McConnell in recognition of his many years of devoted service to St. John’s. This scholarship is awarded annually to a Cadet Corps rising senior who has demonstrated exemplary leadership and service to the Cadet Corps program and St. John’s community.

Bro. Albert Mosser Scholarship Fund Established in 1998 to carry out Bro. Albert’s simple wish: “Make sure St. John’s is always there to help students.”

Philip and Marion Mudd ’54 Scholarship Fund Established in 1999 by Philip and Marion Mudd.

Established in 2007 by Mr. and Mrs. John Hassett ’70 to provide scholarship support for deserving students.

ST. JOHN’S ENDOWMENT FUNDS Clifford L. Patterson, Jr. Scholarship Fund

Bill and Betty Scaggs Scholarship Fund

Awarded to a deserving sophomore who has demonstrated leadership in a team sport, with preference given to a member of the Cadet Corps. The recipient will maintain honor grades and reflect the Lasallian ethos of humility in service to others.

This scholarship fund is named in honor of Bill ’54 and Betty Scaggs and their longstanding support of the St. John’s community and its students.

John T. Peak ’63 Scholarship Fund The John T. Peak ’63 Scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduate of the Christian Brothers’ San Miguel Middle School of Washington, DC, and it will be renewed to that student each year as long as the student attends St. John’s and is recommended by the Counseling Department.

Pierce Family Scholarship Established by Albert C. ’62 and Mary Ann Pierce, in honor of his late parents, CWO and Mrs. Albert C. Pierce, USMC (Ret.). This academic scholarship is given with preference to students who have lost a parent while attending St. John’s and perpetuates the work of the Brothers who allowed Al to finish his St. John’s education on scholarship after the passing of his father.

Quinn Faculty Enrichment Fund This fund is used specifically to award professional development grants to staff members who distinguish themselves through extraordinary service to the St. John’s community.

It is hoped that these funds will provide staff members with the tools to grow as Lasallian educators while honing their professional and personal skills.

The Quinn Family Scholarship Fund Established in 1988 in honor of John A. Quinn, Sr. 1907 and Vivian E. Quinn and their heirs, by George J. Quinn ’43, alumnus and former trustee of St. John’s.

Thomas and Ann Rasmussen Scholarship Fund Established by Thomas Rasmussen ’63 on the occasion of his parents’ 50th wedding anniversary for students in need.

Mr. and Mrs. George Reese ’87 Scholarship Fund Established in 2008 by the Reese family to provide opportunity for others.

Dr. C. Francis Scalessa Scholarship Fund Established in 1984 by alumni in honor of Dr. C. Francis Scalessa, who gave more than 15 years of service to St. John’s as a team physician. Each year, alumni organize the Doc Scalessa Golf Tournament to raise money for this scholarship.

Simmons Alumni Fellows Fund Established in March 2012 by Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Simmons, parents of Tucker Simmons ’11. This endowment provides a stipend to two members of each class, chosen prior to graduation, to serve as Alumni Fellows for five years. They are charged with creating multiple events each year and encouraging their class ties through their fifth reunion.

SJC Christian Brothers Community Scholarship Fund Established by the Brothers for the benefit of students and faculty.

ST. JOHN’S STUDENTATHLETES

St. John’s offers students the chance to participate in 29 different sports during the school year. In addition to talent, each sport requires students to have the right equipment to participate. As an Under Armour Undeniable school, St. John’s is able to provide each student with a state-of-the-art equipment kit that includes all the gear they will need for the cost of just $100 to the family – the school provides the rest of the necessary funding.

In the fall of 2016, St. John’s cross country team had more than 70 participants – but based on previous years, they had an equipment allotment for only 35 students. Unlike many other St. John’s teams, only a small number of cross country runners participate at the varsity level; however, St. John’s

wanted to ensure that every runner on the team had the training equipment they needed, including uniforms and running shoes.

Thanks to the generosity of donors to the St. John’s Fund, the school was able to purchase enough equipment for all 70 runners. The team went on to have a very successful year and produced the school’s first-ever individual female cross country champion, Cady Hyde ’20. St. John’s annual fund provides support to students across all seasons, sports and team levels, making sure every student-athlete has the chance to take their talents to the highest level.

THE ANNUAL FUND...

FACULTY AND STAFF SUPPORTING STUDENTS IN NEED

The Student Assistance Fund is a part of the St. John’s Annual Fund that directly supports St. John’s students and families in crisis. Funded through donations from the school’s faculty and staff members, the Student Assistance Fund allows our school community to live out the words of St. John Baptist de La Salle: “God entrusts to you his care of the young.”

Through donations to the Student Assistance Fund, St. John’s can directly support students and families that are truly in need. Donations to the fund provide support in ways large and small — last year, the fund provided money 22

for students who could not afford school books, as well as for students who could not afford the shoes for their uniform or who did not have money to ride the bus or eat lunch. The fund also allows the school to support St. John’s families that are facing serious crises, such as the death of a parent or family illness.

St. John’s faculty and staff are dedicated to the education and support of every student – and that includes looking out for those who are struggling. The Student Assistance Fund is a way for the school to lend support — quietly and anonymously — to those who truly need it.

THE ANNUAL FUND SUPPORTS...

CHRISTIAN SERVICE IMMERSION TRIPS

Each year, St. John’s Lasallian Center for Mission and Ministry plans Christian service immersion trips during the spring and summer breaks that provide our students the opportunity to travel across the country volunteering in communities that need support. During these weeklong trips, St. John’s students perform a variety of services for the greater community, including education, construction, food service, child care and farming.

The service trip sites change and evolve each year to match the needs of our students and the greater community. During the 2016-2017 school year, St. John’s offered six immersion trips that gave students the opportunity volunteer at three different locations: De La Salle Blackfeet School in Browning, MT; Romero Center Ministries in Camden, NJ; and Sacred Heart Southern Missions in Walls, MS. Each trip accommodates eight to 10 students and two faculty members.

It is the school’s long-term goal to make Christian service immersion trips available to the entire student body, thereby giving every student the opportunity to attend at least once during their time here. To genuinely fulfill St. John’s educational mission and create generations of alumni dedicated

to improving the lives of others less fortunate, the immersion program must become an activity all students experience and cost must no longer be a barrier.

Currently, each student earns or raises the requisite $500 fee for each trip; however, the overall cost of the trips far exceeds the expected student contribution. St. John’s must therefore raise the necessary funds from other sources, including tax-deductible gifts made to the Lasallian Christian Service Fund. All gifts directed in this manner are applied to defray the costs of these trips.

Through the support of our alumni, families and friends, every student, regardless of ability to pay, has the opportunity to experience the life-changing effect of a Christian service immersion trip. Through these immersion programs, St. John’s students are enlightened to their Christian responsibility, and many of these students go on to affect the world humbly as a result of their own conversion and passion.

THE ENTREPRENEURIAL CENTER FOR INNOVATION AND LEADERSHIP

In 2015, St. John’s launched the Entrepreneurial Center for Innovation and Leadership, a cross-curricular program that directly supports St. John’s mission to prepare young women and men for lives of leadership, achievement and service.

With the goal of improving the global human condition, graduates from this center will make a difference in the world by combining their innovative spirit with the values of compassion, personal responsibility and service to others.

ECIL courses take place outside the classroom and are available to all St. John’s students; the four-year curriculum is designed to build upon the lessons taught each year and culminate with the senior capstone project. The Class of 2019 became the first participants, kicking off the 2015-2016 school year with the Freshman Day of Leadership, a tradition that has continued with the classes of 2020 and 2021.

Freshmen also hear from successful innovators, leaders and coaches throughout the year.

Sophomores have the opportunity to attend the two-day Startup Experience workshop, which serves as a microcosm of the real-world entrepreneurial experience, taking students 30

through the process from problem identification through the business pitch. The junior year curriculum includes a yearlong project in which students use design thinking to reflect on a global or societal challenge and then develop an action plan to find solutions to that challenge.

This exciting initiative was made possible entirely by gifts to the St. John’s Fund, and now, two years later, annual fund giving continues to fully support this academic program. In addition to monetary support, St. John’s alumni and parents also donate their time as speakers, competition judges and subject matter experts who help shape the ECIL’s curriculum.

Through the generosity of the St. John’s community, the ECIL will continue encouraging students to become leaders and teaching them to apply their creativity and innovation to make the world around them a better place.

THE ANNUAL FUND SUPPORTS...

PERFORMING ARTS STUDENTS

In the last decade, the number of students that participate in St. John’s award-winning band, orchestra and choral programs has more than tripled. Through the generosity of the donors to the Campaign for Arts, Mission and Ministry, the school was able to construct the new 15,000-square-foot Donatelli Center for the Visual and Performing Arts, which added three new acoustically designed music classrooms to campus. The Donatelli Center opened in August 2016, and it has dramatically enhanced the educational experience for the students in our 16 instrumental and five vocal ensembles.

However, the annual fund and its generous supporters have also impacted those students in even more direct ways. To outfit the Donatelli Center’s new classrooms and practice rooms, St. John’s was able to purchase six new digital pianos.

Last year, our string ensembles received a new double bass, repaired four cellos, restrung four violas and rented 10 violins and violas for our beginning students to play. Our chamber choir added several new dresses for the vocalists and new classroom bulletin boards, while other student-musicians replaced some very old uniform parts.

Our award-winning jazz program was able to add a new piano and drum set dedicated to those groups alone. St. John’s also purchased a new vibraphone, bass drum, timpani set, percussion cabinet and tubular bell chimes for our band students.

Finally, three of the school’s aging tubas received some muchneeded repairs.

These new instruments were needed because each program – band, strings and vocal music – now has its own dedicated classroom space, whereas all 21 groups previously shared one multi-purpose space. Our students now have the room and equipment to grow their talents and share them with the greater St. John’s community.
