CANCER HEALTH EQUITY RESEARCH CENTER
To achieve truly extraordinary care, Baptist Health believes it is critical to address health disparities in our community.
Together with Miami Cancer Institute and the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University (FIU), we have established the Cancer Health Equity Research Center (CHERC). This initiative aims to significantly increase clinical trial enrollment among underserved populations, particularly Black, Hispanic and female patients.
Despite cancer being the leading cause of death among Hispanics, their participation in clinical research has been historically low, often due to barriers like limited or no health insurance coverage. With locations across South Florida, Baptist Health is uniquely positioned to confront these disparities head-on.
Our commitment extends beyond treatment to launching programs that address social determinants of health, such as access to preventive care, nutritious food and transportation.
Research efforts will focus on identifying unique biomarkers through our expanded biorepository and innovative studies, aiming to understand and mitigate the impact of health disparities on overall health. This partnership between Miami Cancer Institute and FIU seeks to make profound strides in cancer health equity and enduring change.
