MAX MCRAE STOKED WITH FORD FIESTA RALLY3 TEST

Max McRae has set his sights on a 2023 Junior World Rally Championship (JWRC) campaign after testing an M-Sport Ford Fiesta Rally3 for the first time in Poland. The 18-year-old drove the car for a day on asphalt before visiting M-Sport Poland’s impressive Krakow premises, where the Fiesta Rally3 is developed and built.

Max said: “That’s a seriously impressive car. You have this picture in your mind of what the car’s going to be like and how it will perform. I thought I had a pretty good idea... but it was even better than I thought it was going to be.

“I am pretty keen to do JWRC, but now I’ve driven the car I just know that’s where I’ve got to be. The chance to drive that car on rounds of the World Rally Championship is totally the way to go and that’s what we’re working really hard towards now.

“To move from rallying in Australia to going to the world championship is a step up in budget, but it’s also an incredible opportunity to take experience of rallying at the highest level on surfaces and events like the snow in Sweden, the Tarmac in Croatia and then rough and smooth fast gravel in places like Sardinia and Estonia.”

AUSTRALIAN V8 TOURING CARS NATIONAL SERIES TO RETURN IN 2023

The Australian V8 Touring Cars National Series will return as a stand-alone category in 2023. The series, to run in addition to the Dunlop Super3 Series, will return following confirmation of the Supercars’ commission decision regarding eligibility for the 2023 Dunlop Super2 Series.

That will see the Car of the Future models from Holden, Ford, Nissan, Mercedes and Volvo become eligible for Dunlop Super3 competition for the first time, alongside the existing Project Blueprint-specification VE II Holden Commodore and FG Ford Falcon. Super3 will continue to race on a combined grid with Dunlop Super2 in 2023.

“We have been well into the planning to re-establish the V8 Touring Cars Series as a stand-alone entity for some time,” commented Category Manager – Super3 / V8 Touring Cars Liam Curkpatrick.

“This announcement offers competitors with pre-Car of the Future Supercars the best of both

worlds: They can compete in Super3 competition alongside the Super2 cars, and they can also race among cars of a similar specification in a standalone category.

“This is essentially the return of the series’ that grew and evolved into what became Super3 in 2019.

“V8 Touring Cars will have its own calendar, race formats and broadcast package, offering a great place for both young drivers progressing up the ladder or those who just enjoy racing these sensational cars.”

The reborn V8 Touring Cars Series will remain exclusively for pre-COTF Supercars up to and including the FG Falcon and VE II Commodore. The series’ will run a stand-alone calendar, will retain its Motorsport Australia Series status and continue to award Superlicense points.

SPA FEATURE RACE WIN A HIGHLIGHT FOR DOOHAN

Jack Doohan sits fourth on the overall points table with just one round to go in the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship. His third race win of the season at the Spa-Francorchamps round in Belgium in late August has helped propel the Australian driver within reach of third as he lies just nine-points behind America Logan Sargeant.

“Finishing both races on the podium was really goodas well as getting my first Feature Race win,” commented Doohan. “Obviously, I had two Sprint Race victories, but I really wanted that Feature Race win. We came super close in round one in Bahrain, then round two in Barcelona, so it’s been coming and I’m super glad to get it.”

“Racing at Spa is a lot different than Qualifying at Spa. Obviously we have to run a lot lower

downforce than in qualifying and you’re targeting different areas, mainly straight line speed which obviously means less downforce, it make sit trickier in the middle sector and it’s quite heavy on deg. Learning when to make the right moves and being patient to wait for DRS and then knowing when it was time to not to get too close in the middle sector so if I had DRS, releasing it halfway up the Kemmel Straight so I didn’t get too close so it didn’t hurt the tyre too much.”

Felipe Drugovich has already wrapped up the Formula 2 title with one round left at the Yas Island in Abu Dhabi 1820 November 2022.

CROSS

STARS JOIN FIA MOTORSPORT

Cross Car will debut at the FIA Motorsport Games this October, 26-30, drawing off-road racing, Autocross, and Cross Car stars to compete for the glory of winning a gold medal for their home nation.

Introduced to the FIA Motorsport Games for the first time this year, the Cross Car competitions for both Junior and Senior drivers will take place on the permanent Autocross Veynois circuit in Veynes, located near the city of Gap, north of Le Castellet.

Cross Car is to off-road racing what karting is to circuit racing. It’s where established and upcoming stars from rally and off-road competition build their craft driving small offroad buggies powered by motorbike engines, drivers like current FIA Euro RX3 Rallycross leader Kobe Pauwels, and Viktor Vranckx, who heads the FIA RX2e Rallycross Championship.

With the FIA Cross Car Academy Trophy in 2021 giving juniors aged 13+ years an accessible and

affordable platform to develop their off-road skills, Cross Car competition is growing across the globe.

“As an entry category promoted through Autocross, and sometimes Rallycross, the addition of Cross Car to the programme of the FIA Motorsport Games makes full sense,” commented Wlodek Szaniawski, President of the FIA Off-Road Commission. “Cross Car was the first step to motorsport for several current WRC, World RX and Euro RX top stars. Cross Cars races are always exciting to watch, as the vehicles are light and agile, and even more exciting to drive!”

The Cross Car competition will take place on Friday and Saturday, 28-29 October, at Autocross Veynois. Free practice will precede two qualifying practice sessions and three qualifying heats, the semi-final, and all-important final to decide the medal-winning nations and drivers.

WHAT IS SEPSIS?

Maddy Jones was an 18-year-old Honours Law student in the prime of her life. She was intelligent, beautiful, very independent, wickedly funny, sarcastic, and sometimes irreverent. She died from Sepsis in October 2017.

Had there been greater awareness around Sepsis, Maddy's symptoms would have been recognised by both family and healthcare professionals. Maddy's death was preventable.

Sepsis is a life-threatening infection that may look like the flu or gastro and start with any infection such as chest, throat, skin or urinary tract.

The Maddy Jones Foundation aims to eliminate preventable deaths and disabilities resulting from a lack of Sepsis awareness, speedy diagnosis and immediate medical treatment.

If you detect even a few of these symptoms, seek medical help immediately.

Over half a million dollars raised for families in need

The 2022 Dunga Derby was yet another resounding success, with $584,026 raised for Queensland families facing tough times. GetGenuine member Pialba Smash Repairs are a regular participant in the Fraser Coast Dunga Derby, proudly reaching their fundraising target of $5000 raised.

Pialba Smash Repairs have enjoyed entering the Dunga Derby adventures every year since it all began in 2015. They say they will continue to join in every year and chip away at their already incredible donation tally – currently over $42,000.

The Dunga Derby started in 2015, when a group of local businesses came together after a friend’s child was struck down with an aggressive brain tumour. Shortly afterwards, a teenage dancer in the community was diagnosed with bone cancer.

The group of businesses wanted to raise money to support the families’ medical, travel and loss of income expenses. And so the Rally for a Cause Dunga Derby concept was born.

Over 300 people working together- fundraising for their local community, working hard for the benefit of others.

VEGEPOD POD-TO-PLATE

Sam Goodwin’s Pesto & Vintage Cheddar Pull-Apart Scroll

My Vegepod has been a revelation for growing herbs, never have I seen such lush, green and sturdy herb growth; even soft herbs like coriander, which is notoriously fragile to grow, are booming. So, here’s a little segment to get you inspired to grow herbs in your Vegepod and reap the benefits in the kitchen.

I’ve got an entire medium pod dedicated to herbs. It is probably my most important and favourite Vegepod, providing flavour bombs that elevate dishes to the next level. Depending on the size of your backyard or alfresco, small or medium Vegepods are perfect for easy access herbs that can be placed just outside your kitchen or next to the BBQ. Having them right there within arm’s reach whilst cooking allows you to create quick condiments and sauces to compliment any dish.

Here’s a quickfire list of examples of how to use your fresh herbs:

• Cooking steak? You can’t go past an Argentinian style chimichurri using oregano and parsley.

• Fish and chips? Fresh tartar sauce loaded with dill and parsley.

• Nam jim, with a punch of a good punch of coriander, is my go-to Thai style dipping sauce or salad dressing

• The allrounder – Italian style salsa verde using any combination of parsley, basil, or mint, works perfectly whether you’re cooking seafood, chicken, beef or vegetables.

Storing & Preserving

If you’re using any of the above sauces, they will hold in the fridge for 1-2 weeks if they are stored in an airtight container or jar.

Alternatively, a great way to preserve your herbs for months is to freeze them. This is best achieved by blitzing them into an oil (I’d recommend extra-virgin olive oil, or grapeseed if you prefer neutral flavour) and freezing them in ice cube trays. Then, all you need to do is pop them out as you need them & add them into your favourite dish.

PESTO & VINTAGE CHEDDAR SCROLL

This recipe uses another method not mentioned above but one you will all be familiar with – pesto. Traditionally, the authentic Pesto Genovese from Italy uses only basil leaves, which is the flavour most people would be familiar with. However, like the sauces above, you can play around with herbs depending on what you have coming out of the Vegepod.

In this instance, I had an abundance of rocket which has quickly become my go-to base for my everyday pesto. In this rendition, I have added herbs that were thriving in early winter - parsley, chives, and tarragon.

This scroll is the perfect spring starter to be shared in the middle of the table – pulled apart and served with a bowl of soup or slow cooked casserole.

WILSON DOMINATES MAKE SMOKING HISTORY TARGA MALAGA SPRINT FOR A HAT TRICK

The third and final instalment of 2022 Make Smoking History Targa West, the Make Smoking History Targa Malaga Sprint took place on the fast 6-kilometre course on the closed roads in Malaga’s industrial area in Perth. A firm favourite for driver and spectators, the sprint had been shortened this year to meet rallysprint regulations and to avoid the newly built BP service station with 70 drivers racing the clock along the street circuit four times.

Troy Wilson convincingly took the outright win in his 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 10 with co-driver Frank Guildea, leading from start to finish.

First-time competitors in Malaga, Wilson / Guildea finished all four runs 24-seconds ahead

of Matt Cherry and co-driver Cade Bell in their highly modified 1982 Toyota Starlet. Third place went to Cody Harris and Morgan Ward in their 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8 MR who finished 2.5 seconds behind Cherry / Bell.

The ex-West Coast Eagle AFL footballer won the first two rallies in the Make Smoking History Targa West series, namely, the Midland Toyota Targa Ellenbrook Sprint and The City of Perth Targa Rallysprint.

Bunbury resident Mark Cates finished fourth outright in his 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS with codriver Pete Davies, also winning the Targa Cup Outright Driver class and Targa Cup 2WD 2000cc and over.

CHAMPIONS POWER, TEAM PENSKE SHARE HONOURS AT VICTORY LAP CELEBRATION

Chevy win the Manufacturer Award for the seventh time since it returned to the series in 2012

Will Power and Team Penske stepped into the spotlight again as the 2022 NTT INDYCAR SERIES champions Saturday night during the Victory Lap Celebration at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum.

Power clinched his second series championship with a third-place finish in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet at the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

Australia native Power prevailed by 16-points over teammate Josef Newgarden, delivering Team Penske its record-extending 17th INDYCAR SERIES championship.

Team Penske’s technical team also was honoured with two awards. Kyle Moyer won the Team Manager of the Year Award for the fifth time. It’s the sixth time a Team Penske executive

has won. Pennzoil presented Trevor Lacasse with the Chief Mechanic of the Year for the first time, the sixth time a Team Penske mechanic has earned this award.

Power’s No. 12 Verizon Team Penske crew also won the Firestone Pit Performance Award for earning the most cumulative Pit Stop Performance Award points during the 2022 season.

Team Penske drivers Power, Newgarden and Scott McLaughlin delivered nine of Chevrolet’s seriesleading 11 victories this season, helping Chevy win the Manufacturer Award for the seventh time since it returned to the series in 2012 and the first time since 2017. Jim Danahy, U.S. vice president, Competition Motorsports Engineering for Chevrolet, accepted the award on behalf of his team.

NEWEST GENERATION OF THE PORSCHE 911 GT3 R REVEALED

The new Porsche 911 GT3 R was unveiled to the public at this year’s 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps.

From the 2023 season, Porsche customer teams can campaign the new racing vehicle in worldwide motorsport events that adhere to the GT3 regulations. The vehicle is based on the latest 992-generation 911. Compared to its predecessor, the new 911 GT3 R features a larger engine producing up to 416 kW (565 PS), a more constant aerodynamic performance and an optimised vehicle balance.

Development began in 2019 with priority given to further improving the driveability for professionals and so-called gentleman drivers, as well as tapping larger performance reserves for different Balance of Performance (BoP) classifications. Another focus was on streamlining the handling of the race car for the teams and reducing the running costs. Porsche Motorsport now offers the new 911 GT3 R at a price of

511,000 Euros ex-factory plus country-specific VAT and optional extras.

At the core of the new racing car is the nearstandard engine based on the 992-generation 911 power plant. Like in the previous model, it is a water-cooled flat-six engine with four-valve technology and direct fuel injection. The main new development is the displacement: like the 911 RSR, the capacity of the new 911 GT3 R has increased by a good five per cent from 3,997 to 4,194 cc. This has boosted the engine’s peak output to around 416 kW (565 PS).

Its lightweight body with an intelligent aluminium-steel composite design draws on the production model, albeit with major modifications for use in the 911 GT3 R. Almost all body components are made of lightweight carbon, including the front and rear lids, doors, side panels, rear wing and roof. The wheel arches are made of aramid fibres.

JEEP UNVEILS ITS FIRST FULLY ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Jeep has marked World EV Day by debuting its first dedicated electric vehicles

Jeep has marked World EV Day by debuting its first dedicated electric vehicles, while simultaneously detailing its future plug-in plans.

The Stellantis-owned American brand has whipped the covers off the Avenger, Wagoneer S, and Recon; a ruggedly styled compact crossover, a luxury SUV flagship, and an off-road enthusiast 4×4. All three models are set to debut in 2024.

Amid the launch, Jeep confirmed that it aims for 50% of its sales in North America to be electrified by 2030.

The Avenger [above] was the largest focus at the brand’s launch event overnight, shoring up as a likely volume seller for the brand in Europe.

“The all-new Avenger will offer Jeep brand capability that is rightsized for the European market,” says Antonella Bruno, head of Jeep Europe at Stellantis,

“This modern, fun and emotional SUV will appeal to a growing set of customers who are looking for a capable, compact, modern and allelectric Jeep brand alternative to the current players.”

The Avenger is built on Stellantis’ ECMP architecture. Jeep says that the Avenger will be able to travel 400km to a charge while also sporting “impressive” ground clearance.

Power will reportedly come via either two or four of the brand’s 70kW electric motors, depending on whether customers opt for two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. A hybrid is also set to be unveiled later in the year.

While the Avenger has yet to be confirmed for Australia, it has been confirmed for launch in Japan and South Korea, which means a local launch looks promising. Alfa Romeo and Fiat versions of the Avenger are also expected.

NEW ZEALAND ENJOYS STRONGEST AUGUST NEW CAR SALES MONTH YET

Motor Industry Association of New Zealand (MIA) chief executive David Crawford says that August’s healthy new-car registration figures, while refreshing news for the industry, were more indicative of shipping timing than a changes in the market.

Crawford describes it as the “strongest month of August on record”, adding that the surge in figures was “largely due to shipments arriving allowing back orders to be filled”.

“The month tally bucks a recent softening market trend bought on by rising costs of living, high fuel prices, continued vehicle supply constraints and a weakening New Zealand economy,” he adds.

According to the MIA, 14,690 new vehicles were registered in August; 10,940 passenger cars and 3750 commercials. Passenger sales were up 138.6% on the same month last year and commercial sales 73.5%; last August having been heavily impacted by COVID-19 alert level 4.

As previously reported, the Ford Ranger (934 registrations) led the month, heading the Toyota Hilux (897) and Tesla Model 3 (745).

Although utes held the two top spots in the market, Crawford says August showed

a “continuing subdued market for light commercial vehicle”.

The top 10 was rounded out by the Mitsubishi Outlander (677), Tesla Model Y (581), BYD Atto 3 (448), Toyota RAV4 (437), Kia Sportage (374), Kia EV6 (354), and the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (342).

The models Crawford refers to with shipments arriving include the recently updated Ranger and the new-to-market Model Y and Atto 3.

The latter pairing contributed significantly to what was a strong month for pure EVs. A total of 2530 were registered, not including 27 BEV light commercials and 3 BEV heavy vehicles.

In addition 627 plug-in hybrids were registered (Eclipse Cross leading the Outlander and MG HS), and 1626 hybrids were registered (RAV4 leading Kia Niro, and Toyota Highlander).

Elsewhere, the Mitsubishi Triton narrowly missed out on its first top 10 berth since March, with 298 registrations, while the Suzuki Swift also missed out with its 280 registrations.

Year-to-date the Hilux still leads the Ranger, 6634 to 6408. Mitsubishi’s strong year is underlined by three of their models, the Outlander, Triton, and Eclipse Cross, occupying third, fourth, and sixth.

POLESTAR TO SUPPLY BATTERIES FOR ELECTRIC HYDROFOIL BOAT

Polestar has signed a multi-year agreement to supply battery and charging systems to Swedish hydrofoil electric boat company Candela.

The agreement marks one of the world’s first direct battery technology collaborations between companies from the automotive and marine industries.

Utilising computer-guided hydrofoils which lift the hull above water, Candela’s electric boats ‘fly’ above the surface and use up to 80% less energy at high speeds compared to traditional motorboats.

“As a battery supplier to Candela, we can help drive the transition to cleaner oceans and lakes, and electrifywaterborne transport,” says Polestar chief executive Thomas Ingenlath.

Candela chief executive Gustav Hasselskog says: “While electrification of cars has come a long way in the last few years, the marine sector has fallen behind.

“Marrying our efficient hydrofoil technology to highcapacity batteries from Polestar means we can speed up the mass market adoption of electric boats together.”

The supply of battery and charging systems to a third party, a first for Polestar as an EV manufacturer, marks the start of a broader intended partnership between Polestar and Candela.

CALIFORNIA SET TO BAN NEW ICE CAR SALES BY 2035

A ban on new internal combustion engine (ICE) car sales is expected to be applied by the California Air Resources Board in the US state.

Tough rules stopping the sale of fossil fuel new cars are likely to be passed by the agency, US media saying it will have major implications for the US car market considering how large California’s economy is.

The California Air Resources Board will vote on the measure Thursday afternoon (August 25), board member Daniel Sperling told CNN.

The new rules are likely to include new ICE car phase out targets. Starting with 2026 models, 35% of new cars, SUVs and small pickups sold in California would be required to

be zero-emission vehicles, according to CNN. “That quota would increase each year, expected to reach 51% of all new car sales in 2028, 68% in 2030 and 100% in 2035. The quotas also would allow 20% of zero-emission cars sold to be plug-in hybrids.”

The new rules aren’t expected to impact used vehicles.

Sperling says he’s “99.9%” confident the measure will pass, which would be one of the first such bans worldwide.

This is the most important thing that CARB has done in the last 30 years, Sperling says. “It’s important not just for California, but it’s important for the country and the world.”

GR SPORT VARIANT BRINGS MORE DYNAMISM TO YARIS CROSS LINE-UP

Toyota’s light SUV range has been given a dynamic update from the brand’s Gazoo Racing stable in the form of the Yaris Cross GR Sport. which will be available in dealer showrooms from December 2022.

According to Toyota Australia, the Yaris Cross GR Sport offers retuned suspension for a more rewarding driving experience, as well as stylish touches inside and out that distinguish it from the rest of the light SUV line-up.

It says the GR Sport is clearly differentiated on the outside by 18-inch alloy wheels featuring a 5-twin-spoke design and bright machined finish, while other exterior touches include a unique front grille with a black mesh design, and a more sporty rear diffuser.

Upgraded front sports seats feature suede-like cover with synthetic leather grey upholstery with light grey stitching with the stitching also applied to the steering wheel.

Gunmetal silver trim inserts applied on the doors and instrument panel complement the GR Sport’s aluminium pedals, while GR logos are found throughout the cabin on the front headrests, smart keys and steering wheel.

Toyota Australia says the rigid TNGA-B platform underpinning the Yaris Cross affords the urban SUV great chassis balance and nimble handling, which has been further enhanced for the GR Sport with retuned suspension to sharpen steering feel and response and reduce body roll.

Mirroring the C-HR GR Sport, the Yaris Cross GR Sport will be offered exclusively with a 2WD hybrid powertrain, that pairs a 67kW/120Nm 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with a pair of motor generators on the front axle that combine to produce a total system output of 85kW.

More details on the Yaris Cross GR Sport will be revealed closer to its release in December.

E-SCOOTER SAFETY VIDEOS LAUNCHED BY RACV

A suite of videos about riding electric scooters safely and rules protecting riders and other road users has come from the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV).

The videos are available on the arevo by RACV website and feature information on the e-scooter trials in the City of Melbourne, Yarra, Port Phillip and Ballarat.

Topics include how to use an e-scooter, traffic rules, what to do to be safe and how to interact with other modes of transport while riding.

More than one million e-scooter trips in Victoria have occurred since the trials began in February, says RACV mobility general manager Elizabeth Kim.

“RACV is committed to providing Victorians with a choice on how they get around – whether that is by car, on a bike, walking, public transport or on an e-scooter,” she says.

“We want to ensure safety is top of mind for all road users when it comes to e-scooter trials and usage and that’s why we produced these videos available on the arevo by RACV website.

“The videos help Victorians easily understand the rules that apply to e-scooters before they jump on for a ride. The arevo app can also help users plan safe trips around Melbourne using an e-scooter.”

RACV has partnered with Lime, which is participating in the Melbourne e-scooter trial.

Lime Australia and New Zealand general manager Hugo Burt-Morris says e-scooter rules vary in the different Australian states, so understanding the laws in Melbourne is important.

“We need to ensure that we continue to communicate all of the rules and safety measures around e-scooters, so that Victorians can use this convenient and cleaner form of transport with full confidence,” he adds.

“Thanks to their convenience of use and lowemission output, e-scooters are proving to be especially popular in Melbourne.

“Safety and compliance information collected from these trials will help us understand the benefits and risks of e-scooters; including how e-scooters are interacting with other road users and what the optimum rules and regulations should be in the longer term.”

Meanwhile, the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ) is helping drive e-scooter trauma research, with the results to shape policy and laws for improving user safety.

VIVA ENERGY TO ACQUIRE COLES EXPRESS

Viva Energy Group Limited has announced that it will acquire the Coles Express business from Coles Group creating the largest fuel and convenience network in Australia under a single retail operator.

This acquisition accelerates Viva Energy’s strategy to transition to a fully integrated fuel and convenience retailer and maintain its leading position in the attractive and fast growing convenience segment.

“This is an exciting step that will enable us to further extend our network, invest in new and innovative convenience offers across our stores, and enhance our loyalty and digital programs to simplify the way our customers transact with us,” Viva Energy’s chief executive Scott Wyatt says.

Wyatt says the pandemic has changed the way people work and how they shop.

People are shopping more locally, and want more convenience and a wider range of quality products and services. In the future, customers will also be looking for convenient electric vehicle recharging options while they are on the road, and in time we can also expect to see hydrogen refuelling facilities at major highway service centres.

“Our nationwide network of more than 700 stores is placed to meet these evolving needs

and we are excited about the opportunity to expand and grow our fuel and convenience business with the acquisition of Coles Express and the retailing capability and customer service which is delivered by about 6,000 team members across the country.

“By bringing our two businesses together we will be better placed to make the investments and innovations which will be necessary to deliver more value to our customers and drive our future success. This will see the company transition to being a fully integrated Retailer serving about 300,000 customers every day to meet their energy and convenience needs.

“Our relationship with Coles spans almost 20 years and we are delighted to continue in partnership with them following this acquisition. While the Coles Express brand will eventually be replaced, customers will be able to continue to redeem their Coles Shopper Dockets and earn Flybuys points, and in time we plan to broaden the range of loyalty and digital offers to provide even more value to our customers. The company will continue to retain the Shell brand,” Wyatt says.

The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to complete in the first half of 2023.

I’m a doctor, I shouldn’t get sick

Despite spending decades helping others get better, Geoff’s greatest challenge was taking care of himself.

Geoff Toogood had always liked helping people. It was one of the main reasons he decided to become a doctor. On graduating from medical school, he landed his first job as a junior doctor at a hospital. What Geoff didn’t know at the time was that his profession would have a significant impact on his own mental health. That he would become great at helping others, but would struggle to take care of himself.

The realities of being a junior doctor

On the surface, Geoff was living out his dream. In reality, he felt under siege. “The stresses and the hours were significant. Often we would work 48, 56 hours in a row without going home or getting much sleep. This was what my life was like for three or four years,” recalls Geoff. “The world of medicine is very hierarchical. It’s stoic, it’s competitive. Refusing to show weakness and pushing on is a trait that’s admired,” says Geoff. “At times, it can be an environment that cultivates mental health issues.” Though he was struggling, Geoff didn’t tell anyone. This was the way things were in the medical profession. Long hours, little sleep, Geoff just accepted that it was all part of the deal. Doctors were there to help people. Their own health could wait.

Burning out but pushing on Geoff did what many of his colleagues did – he simply put up with the stress. He started his training to become a cardiologist, a process that took eight years. During this time, he often thought about asking for support to manage his stress but never followed through. Once his training was complete, Geoff jumped straight into a role as a consultant. It was full on, right away. On reflection, Geoff concedes he was clearly burnt out.

“I had all the symptoms. I was getting angry and disassociated from my work. I didn’t want to do the work, I was desperate for a rest,” he says.

Still, Geoff refused to take time off. And his poor mental health started impacting his day-to-day life outside of the hospital.

“I became very irritable when it came to noise. When I drove my car, it had to be in silence. I couldn’t listen to the radio. If I went to the football, music playing over the speakers or people talking nearby made me anxious and annoyed,” says Geoff. During this period, Geoff’s found refuge in swimming. It was

quiet in the water and he could block everything else out, focusing all of his attention on his next stroke, his next breath. But even then, he couldn’t fully escape. “Sometimes I’d cry while I was swimming. My eyes would be red but people wouldn’t know why, because you can’t see tears beneath goggles.”

Confirming he wasn’t OK

Geoff had suspected he was depressed but couldn’t bring himself to say it aloud to another doctor. Not until he was sure. Instead, he visited the Beyond Blue website and looked up the symptoms of depression. “I ticked every box. I took an online survey and it confirmed that I was significantly depressed and advised me to seek treatment.” Geoff booked an appointment with his GP. Sitting in the waiting room, he started to worry that one of his patients might be there, and recognise him. He didn’t want them to think he couldn’t take care of himself. After all, he was the fixer. Not the one needing fixing. When he was finally called into the GP’s office, Geoff didn’t know how to begin. He broke down in tears. Then he said exactly what he’d known all along. “I need help.”

Road to recovery and reducing stigma

His visit to the GP brought an overwhelming sense of relief. Now that Geoff had acknowledged he wasn’t ok, he could focus on his recovery. On the recommendation of his GP, Geoff made the time to work with a psychologist and a psychiatrist. In addition to therapy, he was prescribed medication and he finally took some time off work. Geoff also began to practice mindfulness, though not in the way one might assume. Swimming had always had a meditative effect for Geoff and he found playing the drums offered a similar form of release.

“If I’ve had a stressful day, I might really belt the drums. It’s rhythmic, it’s repetitive and it keeps me in the moment.” Geoff still plays the drums and gets into the water when he can – they remain key strategies for his wellbeing. His passion for helping others now extends beyond his work. “The legacy I want to leave is a change in the way we deal with mental health of doctors and medical students,” says Geoff. “I want the conversation to be routine so they can seek help in a very open way.”
