WHAT IS SEPSIS? Maddy Jones was an 18-year-old Honours Law student in the prime of her life. She was intelli` gent, beautiful, very independent, wickedly funny, sarcastic, and sometimes irreverent. She died from Sepsis in October 2017. Had there been greater awareness around Sepsis, Maddy's symptoms would have been recognised by both family and healthcare professionals. Maddy's death was preventable.

Symptoms include: Sepsis is a life-threatening infection that may look like the flu or gastro and start with any infection such as chest, throat, skin or urinary tract. The Maddy Jones Foundation aims to eliminate preventable deaths and disabilities resulting from a lack of Sepsis awareness, speedy diagnosis and immediate medical treatment. If you detect even a few of these symptoms, seek medical help immediately. Just ask, “Could this be Sepsis?”

A black tunnel with no way out “A black tunnel with no way out” – Eddie’s story of grief and depression

The doctor listened and eventually made a diagnosis – depression. It didn’t come as

farm to run. Unable to grieve, the pressure mounted on Eddie and his mental

dealing with.

Eddie was barely out of school when his father died and left him the family health deteriorated.

Farming was always in Eddie Sloan’s blood. It’s how his father made a living and, like most kids who grew up on a farm, Eddie helped out from the time he could walk. Eddie’s dad worked all the time. His mum would sometimes leave for days, even weeks at a time. She was staying with her sister, Eddie would be told. It was only

when Eddie was older that he learned his mother was actually going to hospital to deal with depression.

When Eddie was 17, his father was diagnosed with cancer. Less than two years later, he passed away.

Suddenly, Eddie was not only without a father but responsible for the entire property. His mental health deteriorated.

a great shock for Eddie. In fact, it was more of a relief. At least he knew what he was Depression takes hold

Several years after he was diagnosed, Eddie moved his wife and children across the

country to Kingaroy, a town in Queensland. He liked it there but the transition wasn’t easy. He had been a farmer for so long, and now he was working inside all day.

“I started repeating the same mistakes. Not taking the medication properly. Then going back to the doctor and saying it didn’t work properly.” Eddie also started to isolate himself again. “I was at the lowest I’d ever been. I had pretty much given up on myself and life,” he says.

It reached the point that his wife felt compelled to call an ambulance, which took him to the acute mental health ward at Toowoomba Hospital.

Unable to grieve While Eddie had always helped on the farm, managing it himself was another matter entirely.

He worked long hours and his only respite was to disappear up to one of the back paddocks, where he would lie beneath a tree and sleep.

“I think I learned that coping strategy from my mother. She would hide her depression by going away, and I did the same down in the back paddock,” says Eddie.

Eddie never took the time to grieve his father. And nobody ever asked. That wasn’t

how things went in the country. The focus was on the practical. Even after meeting his wife and having children, the property continued to come first.

“It took me over 12 months to even cry about Dad passing away,” says Eddie.

It was only meant to be a short stay but Eddie wound up there for several weeks. They adjusted his medication and sent him home.

Barely a year later, his mental health deteriorated again. He thought about his

family and how he needed to get better for them. Eddie admitted himself back into hospital voluntarily.

Taking steps to get well It didn’t happen straight away, but slowly, Eddie began to mend. He underwent

different styles of therapy, took his medication consistently and starting regularly seeing a psychologist.

His wife continued to support him and he cut no corners when it came to working on his day-to-day wellbeing. He cut back on caffeine, started taking his diet more

MG4 NAMED 2023 CARSALES CAR OF THE YEAR The new MG4 electric hatch has been crowned the 2023 Carsales Car of the Year while the MY24 Polestar 2 and all-new Hyundai Kona each grabbed a highly commended award. To determine the 2023 Carsales Car of the Year and two Highly Commended models, a multi-stage judging process whittled down a field of more than 100 eligible candidates to 30 contenders and then just 10 finalists plus two wildcards. According to Carsales, this award uniquely combines consumer-focused automotive data, which was employed at each stage of the judging schedule, with the expertise of road testers who cast their votes following a full week of closed and public road testing. The MG4 defeated a field of both electric and conventionally powered finalists after receiving eight first-place votes and two second-place votes from the 10 judges, and a solid cost of ownership ranking from the experts at RedBook. “The MG4 is not just one of Australia’s cheapest and best-value electric cars,” Carsales editor-in-chief Mike Sinclair says. “It’s trump card is excellent dynamics and that makes it a worthy winner of our flagship award. The accurate and well-weighted steering, a genuine sense of agility and finely-tuned electronic aids make the MG4 an enjoyable reach of more people. “The MG4 fulfilled our testing criteria more comprehensively than any other finalist this year, and all judges were impressed. It’s really a very good car,” he says. Forming 50% of each finalists’ score, judges’ votes were based on four assessment areas including safety, innovation and technology, practicality and presentation, and driving performance.

value and specifications data determines the other half of each finalist’s score. To calculate its cost of ownership score Redbook not only evaluated each vehicle’s purchase price within its market segment, but also standard equipment levels, aftersales provisions (warranty, roadside assist, etc), finance costs, deprecation, insurance, service and running costs (tyres, fuel/electricity, etc) over three years or 45,000km. “We’re happy the MG4 was a clear winner of the 2023 Carsales Car of the Year,” MG Motor Australia and New Zealand chief executive Peter Ciao says. “The MG4 proves that electric vehicles can be sustainable, affordable, fun, safe and technologically advanced all at once. “Winning this award not only demonstrate the merits of MG but also the diversity of our ability to produce world class cars. To have a model recognised by such a respected publication is always gratifying, but to receive the overall accolade shows the depth of our brand and product offering now and into the future,” he says. The Carsales judges also recognised the Polestar 2 and Hyundai Kona as standout performers in this year’s field, each winning a highly commended award. “The comprehensively upgraded MY24 Polestar 2 is transformative in its energy efficiency and driving dynamics, while the Hyundai Kona was already our Best Small SUV with ample boot space and one of the most generous back seats in its class – making it the ultimate family-friendly compact SUV,” said Sinclair.

Available in three grades, the new Camry will be the first Toyota in Australia equipped with

Toyota Australia spokesman Sean Hanley

Toyota says its engineers have combined the

technology for Camry reflected overwhelming

electric motors to produce more power and enhanced performance compared with the previous hybrid system.

According to the manufacturer, the engineers

have tuned the latest HEV system by reducing engine revs at lower speeds and increasing power from the traction battery, providing satisfying acceleration and torque feel.

A retuned suspension contributes to even

greater responsiveness, stability and handling

consumer demand, including in Australia.

“Moving exclusively to a hybrid Camry clearly

signals the ongoing success of Toyota’s multi-

pathway approach to helping customers lower their carbon footprint through electrification while leaving no-one behind,” Hanley says.

“Beyond the broad appeal of hybrid technology under the bonnet, we anticipate strong

demand for the new Camry with its premium

interiors along with new-generation advances

to dynamics, safety and convenience,” he says.
