CADILLAC’S ELECTRIFIED RETURN CLOSER

Cadillac looks set to launch into Australasia with a factory right-hand drive electric SUV EVs and Beyond has been led to believe. And we expect the announcement of such plans to come soon.

Media from Australia and New Zealand visited the US last year to drive a range of GM electrified product, including the Lyriq, Silverado and Hummer EVs. Journalists were told at the time Cadillac was being considered for a return.

While General Motors most prominent brand in the region, Holden, has long departed these shores, the company has maintained a footprint with General Motor Special Vehicles, which has distributed a range of large pickup trucks, remanufactured in Australia, and the Corvette, sourced with the steering wheel on the correct side from the famous Bowling Green plant in Kentucky, USA.

They now look set to launch a model that while niche, could play in a more competitive and volume segment than now. That car is the Lyriq, a mid-size luxury all-electric SUV. While the starting price in its home market is US$59,000, or around $98,000, comparing it to other market players our guess is the final price in New Zealand is more likely to be in the $120,000-$140,000 range.

What it brings to the party is a huge 100.4kWh battery, giving it a range in rear-wheel drive versions of 500km. That rear-wheel drive version was the first to launch with a 254kW motor, while a 370kW all-wheel drive version is coming. Both dip into GM’s Ultium set of electric vehicle platform components.

Importantly, right-hand drive versions of the Lyriq have been spotted testing around GM’s Michigan base, meaning theoretically no expensive conversion would need to be undertaken. It is also being assembled ‘for Asia’ in China by SAIC-GM, part of the huge SAIC group that already sells right-hand drive EVs under the MG and LDV brands.

GMSV remains tight lipped on the possibility. “We have not confirmed EVs for Australia or New Zealand and don’t have any announcements to share at this time,” spokesperson Ed Finn said in response to our queries. Could it be a vehicle other than Lyriq headed here? Cadillac has two other electric vehicles confirmed as in the works, though not necessarily for us – including a BMW i7 rivalling saloon and an electric version of the massive Escalade SUV that some media have speculated could share its 177kWh battery with the Hummer EV.

GR SUPRA GT4 HITS 100-UNIT PRODUCTION MARK

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing (TGR) have announced that the cumulative production of its GR Supra GT4 customer motorsports vehicle has hit the 100-unit mark. Thanks to the support of customers around the world, the model reached the milestone in approximately three years since its sales launch in March 2020, which started in Europe and expanded to North America in August, then to Japan and other parts of Asia in October that year.

The Supra-based, race-modified GR Supra GT4 was born out of a desire to give customers wanting to participate in customer motorsports an exciting, efficient and easy way to enjoy racing, as well as to accelerate the making of ever-better cars through the challenge of and feedback from motorsports.

With a cumulative 625 entries in 317 races worldwide as of the end of 2022, it has

demonstrated its high potential by recording 79 class victories, 20 overall wins, and 207 podium finishes in GT4 championships in various countries, as well as the Super Taikyu Series in Japan. All along, advice from customers has led to improvements in both the car and components. Continuing its engagement in motorsports in 2023, 27 units of the GR Supra GT4 are scheduled to compete in various races in Europe, accompanied by 20 units in North America and 12 in Asia, including Japan.

To celebrate the production of 100 units, TGR launched the limited-edition, commemorative GR Supra GT4 100 Edition, which features an exclusive exterior color, unique front bodywork, and a badge with a serial number. Only three units will be produced.

PRICE COMPLETES CAR HAT-TRICK

Toby Price (#487) has been crowned King of the Desert in the car category for a third time, storming home to Alice Springs fastest on Race Day 2 at the 2023 Tatts Finke Desert Race.

Price and navigator Jason Duncan recorded an overall race time of 3 hours, 21 minutes and 46.6 seconds to clean sweep the Tatts Finke Desert Race across Prologue, Race Day 1 and Race Day 2 for a second year in a row.

The Red Bull racer’s total journey was only 0.4 seconds adrift of his record setting overall race time set in 2022.

Price’s dominant form this weekend boosts his tally to nine King of the Desert crowns, with six

wins in the bike category, and now three in the car category.

“To get my first win was a dream come true, and then to say I have nine [now] is wild. We had a really good run, the truck did an amazing job, my crew did an amazing job - without them, I wouldn’t be up here.”

Price blitzed the field by just over 6 minutes, with legend of Australian off-road racing Greg Gartner (#410) making up two spots on the return journey to finish second. Travis Robinson (#13) completed the podium to extend his lead of the Australian Off-Road Championship.

DUNLOP SUPER2 SERIES CELEBRATES 150TH ROUND IN TOWNSVILLE

The feeder series for the Repco Supercars Championship, the Dunlop Super2 Series, celebrates a milestone 150th round in Townsville. The series debuted as the Konica V8 Lites Series in 2000 and featured Ford AU Falcons and Holden VT Commodores on the grid.

In 2023, now well-known as the Dunlop Super2 Series, drivers share the grid with fellow up and coming stars from the Dunlop Super3 Series.

In its inaugural year, it was a 20-year-old Dean Canto who claimed the first ever round victory at Eastern Creek Raceway. Canto went on to win the maiden Series crown and backed that up with a second Series title in 2005.

In its first 23 years there have been 20 different feeder series winners, three of those have won the title twice: Dean Canto, Steve Owen and Paul Dumbrell.

Seven former DS2 Champions are currently racing in the Repco Supercars Championship:

Mark Winterbottom, Cam Waters, Todd Hazelwood, Bryce Fullwood, Thomas Randle, Broc Feeney and Declan Fraser.

Two former DS2 Champions: Mark Winterbottom and Scott McLaughlin have gone on to win the Supercars Drivers Championship later in their careers.

Four drivers: Winterbottom, McLaughlin, Paul Dumbrell and Jonathon Webb have won both the Super2 Series title and the Bathurst 1000.

Nine drivers who won at least one race in the Dunlop Super2 Series have gone on to win the Bathurst 1000: Winterbottom, Dumbrell, Webb, Winterbottom, Chaz Mostert, Paul Morris, Luke Youlden, Lee Holdsworth and Nick Percat.

Of the current 25 Championship drivers, 23 gained valuable experience in the Dunlop Super2 Series before joining the Supercars Championship, 18 of them were also DS2 race winners.

The Dunga Derby started in 2015, when a group of local businesses came together after a friend’s child was struck down with an aggressive brain tumour. Shortly afterwards, a teenage dancer in the community was diagnosed with bone cancer.

The group of businesses wanted to raise money to support the families’ medical, travel and loss of income expenses. And so the Rally for a Cause Dunga Derby concept was born.

MADDY JONES

Every year over 55,000 Australians are diagnosed with sepsis and sadly, more than

8,700 lose their lives.

WHAT IS SEPSIS?

Maddy Jones was an 18-year-old Honours Law student in the prime of her life. She was intelli` gent, beautiful, very independent, wickedly funny, sarcastic, and sometimes irreverent. She died from Sepsis in October 2017.

Had there been greater awareness around Sepsis, Maddy's symptoms would have been recognised by both family and healthcare professionals. Maddy's death was preventable.

Sepsis is a life-threatening infection that may look like the flu or gastro and start with any infection such as chest, throat, skin or urinary tract.

The Maddy Jones Foundation aims to eliminate preventable deaths and disabilities resulting from a lack of Sepsis awareness, speedy diagnosis and immediate medical treatment.

If you detect even a few of these symptoms, seek medical help immediately.

Just ask, “Could this be Sepsis?”

When depression and alcohol meet

Richard finished his six-week stint at rehab. When he left, he was convinced he was ‘fixed’.

Relapsing and returning to alcohol

Medicating with alcohol

Richard started drinking when he was around 15 years old. At 18, he landed a job at a major bank. Over the next two decades he met his wife, started a family and worked his way up to a vice-president position.

Yet with the added responsibility came extra pressure. To cope, Richard drank more. He started drinking before work. Sometimes, he would drink on the job.

Impact on work and struggling to sleep

Gradually his performance at work began to suffer.

“I made bad judgements, was forgetful, missed deadlines and lost drive and energy,” says Richard. “Even still, no one wanted to talk about it.’

Soon, it became clear. Richard was an alcoholic. One of the major casualties of his drinking was his first marriage.

“I felt shame. Shame at my addiction. Shame that I had let everybody down as a husband, a father, a friend, an employee.”

Diagnosed with depression

Richard’s workplace had a mandatory health check for all employees over 40 with a company doctor. It came at the perfect time.

The doctor, who immediately noticed Richard was a sick man, asked about his lifestyle.

“When he asked how much I drank, I lied, but it was still enough to scare him,” says Richard.

He recommended a psychologist, who Richard opened up to about his difficulty sleeping. His work struggles. His addiction. And he felt like a huge burden had been lifted from his shoulders.

Trying different treatments

Diagnosed with depression, Richard started to wonder whether his drinking was the cause or a coping strategy. Not long after the diagnosis, Richard was admitted to a rehabilitation clinic.

“Strangely enough, I found rehab to be heaven. Once I had overcome withdrawal, I felt that I was cocooned from the world and all its stresses and problems,” he says.

Read

full story

Over the next decade, Richard remarried, left the bank where he’d spent his entire career and moved to Australia. It was meant to be a fresh start.

But less than two years in, tragedy struck.

“I received the most horrific phone call of my life. My first wife and my 20-year-old son had died in a car crash. My daughter miraculously survived and was physically unharmed,” says Richard.

“Once again, alcohol became my comfort.”

But this time it was even worse. After trying everything she could to help, Richard’s second wife left him. He felt he was of no value to himself and a burden to everyone close to him. “Since I had no purpose, I decided suicide would be best for everyone.”

Richard tried to take his own life. He sustained serious injuries but he was found and taken to hospital in Brisbane before it was too late.

Working towards recovery

Richard defied the odds, made a full recovery from his injuries and was discharged. He then reconnected with his wife.

“It was a miracle. I had a second chance and I wasn’t going to waste it. I needed to replace the darkness and despair with positive passions.”

Alongside trialling medications and sleeping aids, and attending regular counselling and AA meetings Richard picked up new hobbies, developing a passion for photography and writing and completed a degree in journalism and a masters in creative writing.

He also began to put time back into the community through volunteering. In 2016, he embarked on a solo motorbike ride around Australia, covering 16,000km in 46 days. In the process, he raised $6,000 for Beyond Blue.

A new mindset for mental health

The way Richard sees it, he was, is and always will be an alcoholic. When he is feeling down, stressed or anxious, he reaches out to his support network.

“Help is anywhere and everywhere. If you need it – take it”

If you need assistance visit Beyond Blue’s support services. Our mental health professionals are available 24/7 on1300 22 4636, Web chat (3pm-12am AEST) and email (responses within 24hrs).

Richard’s alcohol addiction and battle with depression took a massive toll. It was only when he reached breaking point that he was able to confront what he was doing to himself and take action to get back on track.

BP ON EV JOURNEY WITH AGL

BP and AGL have joined forces to launch in coming months an initial offer for New South Wales customers to receive special charging rates at BP Pulse rapid and ultra-fast chargers when they sign up for AGL’s new EV home energy plan.

As an integrated energy company, BP aims to roll out its network of 600 BP Pulse EV charge points across Australia by 2025.

“The rollout by BP Pulse of fast, reliable chargers at convenient locations across Australia is a prime example of bp’s global commitment to provide customers and partners with the energy and mobility they want, where they want it,” says BP Australia and SVP Mobility Asia Pacific convenience and midstream president Frédéric Baudry.

“We are all taking part in the journey towards decarbonisation, and it’s through projects like this with AGL that we hope to encourage uptake and break down the barriers for people considering an EV.”

BP Pulse Asia-Pacific vice president Sujay Sharma they’re installing a fast and convenient

EV charging network in key metropolitan and regional locations across Australia.

“And now, through this agreement, eligible AGL customers can take advantage of special rates to charge with BP Pulse in New South Wales.”

Both companies plan to continue developing on-the-go charging, energy, and mobility offers for customers.

AGL chief customer officer Jo Egan says the partnership aligns with AGL’s focus on supporting transportation electrification in Australia, enabling the shift to an EV to be easy for customers.

“We are looking to build a seamless charging experience for electric vehicle drivers to ensure charging is simple, accessible, and affordable – whether that is at home or on-the-go,” she explains.

“As we transition to a low-carbon future, this strategic partnership will empower our customers with innovative, sustainable and cost-effective EV charging solutions.”

NASCAR DEBUT FOR VAN GISBERGEN

Current Repco Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen will make his long-awaited NASCAR debut driving the Trackhouse Racing’s PROJECT91 Chevrolet in the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series Chicago Street Race.

“I can honestly say I have dreamed about an opportunity in NASCAR, but really never thought it would become a reality,” said van Gisbergen. “I can’t wait to get to the States to meet everyone and prepare for Chicago. It’s NASCAR’s first time on the streets of Chicago so in some ways everyone will be a rookie like me, but I don’t underestimate that it’s going to be a huge challenge.”

The event will mark van Gisbergen’s first NASCAR race and the third for PROJECT91 after appearances by 2007 Formula One World Champion Kimi Räikkönen at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International in 2022 and at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas on March 26.

Van Gisbergen plans to arrive in America in late June and accompany the team to the June 25 Cup race at Nashville Superspeedway then be in the Trackhouse race shop the week of the Chicago race.

Van Gisbergen isn’t a stranger to America finishing second in the 2015 24 Hours of Daytona in the GTD class.

Van Gisbergen will join teammates Suárez and Chastain in the first-ever NASCAR Cup Series street race located in downtown Chicago. The event will take competitors past and through many of the city’s most renowned downtown landmarks on Michigan Avenue, South Columbus Drive, South Lake Shore Drive and the start-finish line near Buckingham Fountain.

BATHURST 12 HOUR

The dates have been set for Australia’s international enduro, the Bathurst 12 Hour. The new date will see the race held on February 16 – 18 2024. The revised date is two weeks later than the 2023 event, with the change coming following extensive consultation with teams, fans, key stakeholders, manufacturers and international partners to ensure the growth of the event.

Event partners SRO Motorsports Group have confirmed that the Bathurst 12 Hour will remain the opening round of the Intercontinental GT Challenge Powered by Pirelli, with the outright class remaining for allprofessional driving combinations.

Positive discussions are already underway with potential teams and manufacturers from

Australia and overseas, all keen to tackle the Mountain next year.

Australia’s International Enduro attracted a record attendance of 53,466 fans across the three days this year. The 2023 race was won by Mercedes-AMG team SunEnergy1 Racing and drivers Jules Gounon, Luca Stolz and Kenny Habul for the second consecutive year – and the third in a row for Gounon.

The race, which saw the top three cars split by just 1.6 seconds at the finish, was Bathurst’s fastest ever enduro with the field covering more than 2,000km in 12 hours. 2024 is set to be a thrilling year with a host of new cars, including new models from Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini, all eligible for the first time.

MCLAUGHLIN REUNITED WITH PETER BROCK TROPHY

The most coveted prize in Australian Motorsport, the Peter Brock Trophy has made its longest every journey, travelling over 15,600km to Detroit in the USA. It’s part of the buildup to Australia’s Great Race, this year’s 60th anniversary of the Repco Bathurst 1000.

McLaughlin, now an IndyCar star for Team Penske, won the Bathurst 1000 — and the Brock Trophy — in 2019. It was also the first Bathurst win for co-driver Alex Premat, the first for Roger Penske, and the first for Dick Johnson since 1994.

The three-time Supercars champion posted photos holding the famous trophy from the

Detroit

The trophy was on loan from the Triple Eight Workshop in Banyo, where it has been on display since Shane van Gisbergen and Garth Tander drove to victory in the 2022 Repco Bathurst 1000 for the final ever win at Mount Panorama for the Holden Commodore.

The Peter Brock Trophy, awarded to the winning drivers of the Repco Bathurst 1000 travelled to the US direct from the NED Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint, where fans were able to get up close to it during the pre-event signing session in Launceston.

TRANS-TASMAN TCM SET FOR BATHURST AND ADELAIDE

AUSTRALIA and New Zealand will go headto-head in a Trans-Tasman battle of the Muscle Cars at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst International and the VAILO Adelaide 500 this November.

A fleet of cars from Touring Car Masters New Zealand will travel to Australia to compete against the stars and cars of the Gulf Western Oil Touring Car Masters Series for the final two rounds this year.

Up to a dozen cars will cross the Tasman, offering fans a field of more than 30 cars at both major events that conclude the 2023 season.

It’s the result of several years of planning and coordination by the categories on both sides of the Tasman, delayed several times by the Pandemic.

It won’t be the first time that a fleet of Kiwi Muscle Cars have travelled to Australia to race, however it is the first under their current TCM NZ banner.

The series was established in 2020 to forge a link between local competition and the Australian series and has grown rapidly since then.

TOP SAFETY RATINGS FOR MERCEDES-BENZ AND LAND ROVER

A five-star safety rating has been issued for the Mercedes-Benz GLC and upgraded Land Rover Discovery Sport by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

Additional options are now available for safetyconscious consumers looking to buy a midsize SUV, says ANCAP following recent safety upgrades and reassessment against 2022 protocols for both.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC achieved a high Adult Occupant Protection score of 92%.

Full points were awarded for the protection of the driver and child occupants in the side impact test, the driver in the full width frontal test, and front seat passenger in the frontal offset (MPDB) test. Protection offered to the chest of the driver in the oblique pole test was however assessed as “weak”.

“Mercedes-Benz continues to offer a comprehensive safety package to its customers,” says ANCAP chief executive Carla Hoorweg.

Meanwhile, the current generation Land Rover Discovery Sport was first introduced in Australia and New Zealand in 2015 where it achieved a five-star rating against the test criteria of the time.

Following safety upgrades introduced to the Discovery Sport last year, the Land Rover model subsequently underwent a fresh round of testing against the more stringent 2022 test criteria where it demonstrated continued fivestar safety performance across all areas of ANCAP’s assessment.

Enhancements to the AEB system fitted to the Discovery Sport saw it achieve “good” results

in testing of its AEB Car-to-Car functionality, including in AEB Junction Assist and AEB Carto-Cyclist test scenarios. Tests of its AEB Car-toPedestrian and lane support systems showed “adequate” performance.

Structurally, the protection offered by the Discovery Sport to vehicle occupants in a crash was sound, with a mix of “good”, “adequate” and “marginal” results recorded. Points were deducted for the Discovery Sport’s performance in side impacts, as the side chestprotecting airbag did not deploy correctly.

Ram Trucks Australia says demand for its fullsize pick-up truck continues, securing a record 766 retail units in May, bolstered by a record 919 wholesales to the dealer network.

“This result is testament to our dealer network and our Melbourne manufacturing facility, who have left no stone unturned in delivering customer orders,” RAM Trucks Australia general manager Jeff Barber says.

BMW GROUP AUSTRALIA LAUNCHES UNIQUE AFTERSALES INITIATIVE

BMW Group Australia is launching a new aftersales program called Proactive Care.

Proactive Care anticipates the needs of its customers by connecting them with the entire BMW Service world as and when required. This occurs automatically and proactively without the driver having to take any action.

The program caters to all powertrain offerings, including the latest electrified models, whose service requirements differ from their conventionally-powered stablemates. Proactive Care recognises this distinction and ensures that the unique needs of electrified models are met with the appropriate expertise.

BMW Group Australia customer support general manager Brett Hocking says Proactive Care further improve the company’s customer service offering using the latest technology.

“With Proactive Care, we take existing offerings such as Condition Based Servicing, which revolutionised traditional service intervals, and elevates them to a new level.

“Through this program, we go beyond information delivery and take a proactive approach to provide drivers with critical information about the operational aspects of their vehicle and possibly even correct an issue remotely before they are even aware of it,” he says.

If a warning message appears on the instrument display, support is available. Vehicle sensors detect any functional irregularities early and transmits the data directly – in real time – to BMW for analysis and processing.

MY2021 RAM 1500 RECALLED FOR PCM SOFTWARE UPDATE

Ram Trucks Australia is recalling more than 1200 model year 2021 Ram 1500 pickup trucks for a software upgrade to the powertrain control module (PCM).

The PCM determines if the mixture is rich or lean and adjusts the amount of fuel entering the engine.

Due to a manufacturing defect, the PCM software in this vehicle may not operate as intended and could result in the engine shut down causing a loss of motive power while driving.

This could increase the risk of an accident and injury to vehicle occupants or other road users.

Owners of affected vehicles can contact their nearest authorised Ram Trucks dealer to have the vehicle’s PCM software updated free of charge.

Additional information and assistance is available through Ram Trucks customer assist on 1300 681 792.
