Used car sales rebound in January as listings tighten

Australia’s used car market has started 2026 on a stronger footing, with sales lifting sharply in January while vehicle listings continued to tighten, according to the latest Automotive Insights Report.

The January 2026 report, released by the Australian Automotive Dealer Association in partnership with AutoGrab, shows 188,421 used vehicles were sold during the month, up 9.7% from December.

On the supply side, active used car listings fell 5.4% month on month to 291,666 vehicles, pointing to tightening stock levels across the market.

Despite the lift in sales, vehicles are taking longer to sell than at the spring low point, suggesting buyers remain cautious and conditions are more balanced than in recent peak years.

AADA chief executive James Voortman says the January results reflect a return to normal postChristmas activity rather than a surge in demand.

“A solid lift in sales to start the year suggests buyers have returned to the market after the typical December slowdown, but conditions remain more balanced than the highs we saw in previous years,” Voortman says.

“Even with stronger volumes, days to sell have continued trending higher since the lows recorded in September, which tells us consumers are taking their time and shopping carefully.”

Average days to sell rose to 49.4 days in January, continuing a gradual upward trend since September.

Sales rose across every state and territory in January, led by strong gains in Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland. The Northern Territory recorded the largest percentage increase, albeit from a low base.

SUVs continued to dominate demand, accounting for 85,491 sales, up 14.5% month on month, while passenger cars lifted 3.2%. Sales of used utes rose 11.4%, reflecting ongoing demand from trades and regional buyers.

Alternative powertrains again stood out. Hybrid vehicle sales rose 15.3% in January, while used EV sales climbed 20.1% to 2889 units. At the same time, EV listings jumped 30.5%, suggesting improved availability is helping to unlock demand in the used market.

Tesla remained the dominant brand in the used EV segment, with the Model 3 and Model Y the two topselling electric vehicles nationally, although several newer models recorded rapid growth from a low base, including the MG4, BMW iX2 and Polestar 2.

The Ford Ranger retained its position as Australia’s top-selling used vehicle overall, ahead of the Toyota HiLux and Toyota Corolla. Strong growth was also recorded by the Toyota RAV4 and LandCruiser Prado.

The report shows retained values remained resilient for newer vehicles, particularly SUVs and light commercial vehicles, although EV retained values softened in January after strong gains late last year.

The Automotive Insights Report provides a monthly snapshot of national used car sales, listings and market trends, drawing on dealership and wholesale data from across Australia.

Australian-founded AI car data platform sold to US investor

A data platform that analyses one in every three used cars sold in Australia has been acquired in a 100% cash deal by a San Francisco-based investment firm, in a move set to strengthen its footprint across Australia and New Zealand.

Dubai-based AlgoDriven has been fully acquired by Emergence, a software-focused investor backed by The Pritzker Organization.

AlgoDriven, founded in 2017 by Australians Glenn Harwood and Jaron Crossland, provides artificial intelligence-powered valuation and appraisal software to dealerships operating in the US$1.6 trillion global used car market. The company says it currently values more than US$25 billion worth of used vehicles annually across more than 1000 dealerships in 10 countries, with a primary focus on Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East.

The company is the number one automotive software appraisal provider in Australia, where it claims its technology analyses one in three used vehicles sold. Dealers representing brands including Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari, BYD, Audi, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Stellantis, General Motors and Ford use the platform.

For New Zealand dealers, where used vehicle pricing and stock management remain under pressure amid tighter margins and fluctuating import volumes, the deal signals continued investment in AI-driven tools aimed at improving trade-in accuracy, residual value forecasting and stock turn.

Harwood says the acquisition marks the next phase of the company’s growth.

“We are delighted to complete this exciting deal and to take the next step of AlgoDriven’s growth journey with the ownership and backing of Emergence and The Pritzker Organization.

“We are proud that a UAE-based company, which has expanded internationally and profitably, has attracted a suitor from the world’s leading economy and one of its most renowned business families.

“Our AI technologies have proved attractive to dealership franchises, manufacturers and banks in the $1.6 trillion used car market. Our new owners are long-term capital partners and will help AlgoDriven build on these foundations to reach its full global potential,” Harwood says.

“We are investing in a proven market leader in AIpowered automotive data, and are delighted to complete this transaction with AlgoDriven.

“Glenn and his team have built a platform relied upon internationally, by dealerships representing the world’s most recognisable car brands. We look forward to accelerating their global expansion; deepening their AI capabilities even further, and welcome them to the Emergence family.”

Emergence says it will inject additional capital to expand AlgoDriven’s presence into the US and Latin American markets and to enhance its AI capabilities, including tools aimed at enabling dealerships to autonomously value, buy and sell used vehicles.

The transaction, which requires no further regulatory approval, provides a cash exit for existing investors including Oman Technology Fund, Global Ventures, 500 Global, Automotive Ventures, Oraseya Capital and Social Capital.

Emergence chief executive Henry Zhang says the firm is backing an established market leader.

BYD targets 2027 for solid-state battery production

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD expects to begin producing solid-state batteries in limited quantities by 2027, following a series of technical breakthroughs in battery life and fast charging capabilities.

According to Chinese media outlet Cailian Press, BYD’s Investor Relations Department confirmed the timeline on 9 February 2026, marking a significant step in the company’s development of sulfide-based solid electrolytes that promise superior conductivity, safety, and higher energy density compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries.

The announcement aligns with previous statements from Sun Huajun, chief technology officer of BYD’s battery business Shenzhen BYD Lithium Battery Co, who outlined the company’s solid-state battery roadmap at the 2nd annual China All-Solid-State Battery and Development Summit.

Sun said sulfide electrolytes are longer-lasting and more stable than traditional liquid lithium-ion batteries, while enabling faster charging capabilities.

BYD’s solid-state battery development follows more than a decade of research, with the company beginning its solid-state battery program in 2013. In 2023, BYD reached a significant milestone by demonstrating that mass production was feasible with various cell systems and materials.

The company began testing solid-state battery cells with capacities of 20 ampere-hours and 60 amperehours in 2024, though BYD previously dismissed reports that it was already testing the technology in its Seal electric vehicle sedan on public roads.

Premium deployment before mass market rollout

BYD plans to initially deploy sulfide-based solid-state batteries in its higher-end electric vehicles before expanding to mass-market models. The first two years of production will serve as a demonstration phase with limited output, with mass production expected to begin toward the end of the decade.

The timeline positions BYD alongside several other manufacturers advancing solid-state battery technology. China’s FAW Group and Dongfeng Motors began testing solid-state batteries in prototype vehicles in January 2026, with Dongfeng’s prototype equipped with a 350 watt-hours per kilogram solidstate battery that the company claims can deliver more than 1000 kilometres of CLTC driving range.

Mercedes-Benz achieved a 1200-kilometre range in a modified EQS equipped with Factorial’s solid-state battery cells in September 2025, while Factorial launched the first commercial solid-state battery program in the United States through a partnership with Karma Automotive.

Toyota, Volkswagen, Stellantis, Honda, and Nissan are also developing solid-state electric vehicle batteries, with most companies targeting similar timelines of limited production in the mid-2020s followed by mass production around 2030.

For Australian consumers, BYD’s solid-state battery development could deliver significant improvements in electric vehicle performance and convenience. BYD has established a growing presence in the Australian market through local distributor EVDirect, offering models including the Atto 3, Dolphin, and Seal across multiple price segments.

The solid-state technology promises faster charging times, longer driving ranges, and improved safety compared to current lithium-ion batteries, potentially addressing key consumer concerns about electric vehicle adoption in Australia’s vast geographical landscape.

Ford partners with universities on extreme environment automation

Ford Australia has joined six Australian universities in an $11 million program to develop autonomous vehicle technology for extreme and remote environments, potentially positioning Australia as a global leader in specialised vehicle automation.

The ARC Training Centre for Automated Vehicles for Rural and Remote Regions (AVR3) brings together researchers from Queensland University of Technology, Swinburne University of Technology, Deakin University, Sydney University, University of Technology Sydney, and University of Western Australia alongside industry partners including Ford.

The collaboration targets applications beyond typical urban automation, focusing on dangerous environments such as bushfire zones, mining operations, and remote agricultural areas where human safety is at risk.

“Australia has unique uses for autonomous vehicles. What we want to do is develop autonomous vehicle technology that helps remove risk to human life in situations like bushfires, makes roads safer by automating monotonous driving tasks like those on farms, and frees up humans so they can do other work, like freeing up paramedics to deliver patient care rather than driving,” said Professor Sebastian Glaser, Centre Director of AVR3, headquartered at QUT.

Addressing automation gaps in harsh conditions

Current vehicle automation development globally focuses primarily on urban environments for applications like last-mile delivery. However, extreme terrain, smoke, flood conditions, and remote roads present additional challenges including lack of lane markings, steep gradients, and large wildlife encounters.

The AVR3 program specifically addresses these gaps, with the Ford Ranger and Ranger Superduty serving as the development platform for the automation technology.

“When our Aussie team was working on Ranger and Ranger Superduty, we spoke to customers across heavy industry – mining, agriculture, forestry,

emergency services – to really understand their dayto-day work and the exposure they have to harsh conditions,” said Jeremy Welch, Special Projects Engineer at Ford Australia.

“It was clear to us that these customers needed extremely heavy-duty vehicles, but we also saw that they could benefit from automation for risk management, productivity, and cost.”

Welch said Ford designed the Ranger as a “smart truck” to facilitate easier integration of autonomous technology for future automation applications.

Expanding existing automation uses

Mining companies already use automated Ford Rangers in some operations. The AVR3 program aims to expand these applications, particularly focusing on safe automation use on public roads.

Professor Glaser said the opportunities extend across multiple sectors. “The opportunities are endless – there are so many uses that we can test for in Australia and that could benefit people outside urban areas.”

The program represents a significant industryacademic collaboration model, with Distinguished Professor Saeid Nahavandi, Associate Deputy ViceChancellor, Research & Chief of Defence Innovation at Swinburne University of Technology, highlighting its importance.

Toyota tops global brand study as BYD breaks through

Toyota Group has reclaimed the top position in global automotive brand value rankings, while BYD has become the first Chinese brand to reach the top three, according to the 2025 AutoVision Global Automotive Brand Value Evaluation Report.

The annual study by AutoVision Awards shows Toyota leading the rankings ahead of Volkswagen Group in second place and BYD in third. The results reflect what AutoVision describes as “historic reconfiguration” in the global automotive industry’s brand value landscape.

Toyota’s return to the summit comes through what the report calls a “multi-pathway carbon neutrality strategy” that integrates hybrid, battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell technologies. The Japanese manufacturer’s global electric vehicle sales increased substantially in 2025, while hybrid variants still account for more than half of volume.

BYD’s achievement marks a significant milestone for Chinese automotive brands, with the report noting that Chinese automotive groups now occupy 10 positions in the top 30 rankings. Great Wall Motors and Dongfeng Motor Group entered the rankings for the first time.

The Chinese manufacturer’s success stems from what AutoVision describes as “vertical technology integration strategy,” functioning as both an automotive manufacturer and proprietary developer of core technologies including battery systems, electric motor motor controls and semiconductors.

BYD’s third-generation Blade Battery technology achieved energy density of 180 Wh/kg while reducing costs by 15 percent compared to the previous generation. The company’s DM-i super hybrid system achieves fuel consumption of 3.8 litres per 100 kilometres, establishing what the report calls “a new benchmark in global hybrid markets.”

Sustainability transformation drives value growth

The study emphasises that sustainability has evolved from a compliance obligation to a core strategic asset driving brand value. Leading automotive brands are intensifying investment in environmental technology development, supply chain decarbonisation and circular material application.

Toyota’s renewable energy utilisation across factories reached 79 percent in 2025, with recycled material usage at 25 percent. Volkswagen’s “Way to Zero” strategy has reduced product lifecycle emissions by 30 percent through full value chain decarbonisation measures.

The report identifies digital ecosystems as increasingly central to brand development, with social media and user co-creation platforms becoming “central arenas where automotive brands establish deep connections with consumers.”

Brands including BYD, Tesla and Mercedes-Benz demonstrate strong performance in interactive content and community engagement on platforms such as TikTok and other social networks, directly driving product awareness and sales conversion.

Global market dynamics shifting

AutoVision’s analysis indicates the global automotive industry has entered what it describes as a “critical phase of systemic reconfiguration.” Global new energy vehicle penetration crossed 35 percent by 2025, signalling that electrification transition has moved beyond early adoption into mainstream market diffusion.

China bans flush door handles from 2027

China has moved to ban hidden or flush door handles from all new locally manufactured vehicles, with the ruling taking effect from January 1, 2027.

The announcement was made last week by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, citing safety concerns around victims being trapped inside vehicles following collisions.

Manufacturers with vehicles already approved for production will have until January 2029 to make the necessary changes to comply with the new regulations.

Major brands including BYD, GWM, and MG – all of which have gained substantial market share in Australia – will need to ensure their China-produced models comply with the new requirements.

Flush door handles first entered the automotive mainstream with Tesla’s early Model S and Model X vehicles. While they offer benefits in terms of design and aerodynamics, safety concerns around their use on electric vehicles have led to this comprehensive ban.

The new Chinese regulations specify that door handles must have a recess of at least 60mm by 20mm behind the handle. Vehicles must also feature clear interior signage showing exactly how to operate the handle.

Chris Liu of Omdia told AP that other countries may follow China’s lead on the safety measure.

The ban may also influence global automotive design trends, particularly as manufacturers seek to standardise production across different markets rather than create region-specific variants.

Australian safety regulators have not indicated whether similar measures are being considered locally, though the Chinese decision may prompt review of existing standards for door handle design and operation.

Nissan posts positive third-quarter profit, lifts full-year outlook

Nissan Motor Co has delivered a positive thirdquarter operating profit of 17.5 billion yen (A$161m) and raised its full-year outlook, signalling steady progress in its restructuring efforts despite ongoing market pressures.

The Japanese automaker reported global sales of 2.26 million units in the nine months ended December 2025, with consolidated net revenue totalling 8.6 trillion yen. While the company recorded an operating loss of 10.1 billion yen for the nine-month period, this represented a notable improvement from cumulative results through the second quarter as operating losses continued to narrow.

Net income for the nine months came in at negative 250.2 billion yen, primarily due to lower income from equity-method companies and restructuring costs. Despite the challenges, Nissan maintained a robust financial position with total liquidity of 3.6 trillion yen, including 2.1 trillion yen in cash and cash equivalents as of December.

The company has revised its full-year outlook for fiscal year 2025, adjusting global sales volume forecast to 3.2 million units. Net revenue is expected to reach 11.9 trillion yen, while operating profit is projected to improve to negative 60 billion yen, representing an improvement of 215 billion yen compared with the previous forecast.

Re:Nissan restructuring advances

Under its Re:Nissan restructuring plan, the company is advancing efforts to achieve positive automotive operating profit and free cash flow by the end of fiscal year 2026. Nissan has identified 240 billion

yen in potential variable cost savings through implementation of innovative efficiency measures.

Fixed cost reductions are progressing rapidly, with the company delivering over 80 billion yen in the first half and reaching 160 billion yen ahead of plan. Nissan expressed confidence it will surpass its 250 billion yen target by fiscal year 2026.

The consolidation of vehicle production sites is progressing toward completion, with all seven sites for consolidation announced within ten months. Engineering cost-per-hour improvement stands at 15% toward a 20% goal.

“Through the collective efforts of employees company-wide, we are delivering steady progress under Re:Nissan,” president and chief executive Ivan Espinosa said.

“We have announced all seven sites for consolidation within ten months, reflecting disciplined execution and significant advancement on fixed-cost improvements. Although sales remain under pressure and tariff impact continues, we are maintaining operational focus and recognising the ongoing momentum of our product lineup.”

Espinosa acknowledged that fiscal year 2025 will reflect a substantial net loss driven primarily by noncash accounting charges, but said these actions are necessary to strengthen long-term operating performance. The company will continue reinforcing its financial foundation and increasing revenue through the introduction of competitive new models, supporting its trajectory toward Re:Nissan goals.

Inchcape expands FOTON dealer network to 28 locations

Inchcape has added nine FOTON LCV Sales & Service Centres to its Australian network, bringing the total to 28 locations as the distributor accelerates the brand’s retail expansion following the launch of the TUNLAND ute.

The new centres span central and regional areas across New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, the Northern Territory and Tasmania, expanding access to sales, servicing and aftersales support.

The network expansion follows the arrival of the FOTON TUNLAND dual-cab ute in the fourth quarter of 2025, marking the brand’s entry into Australia’s competitive ute segment.

“Launching TUNLAND was an important milestone for the FOTON brand in Australia, but it’s only one part of the story,” FOTON Australia general manager Glen Cooper says.

“Equally important is ensuring customers have confidence in the support behind the product. Continued investment in our retail and service network reflects Inchcape’s commitment to ensuring

FOTON owners have access to a quality network of national support and are well supported.”

TUNLAND specifications and market positioning

The TUNLAND has been engineered for Australian conditions with a 3500kg braked towing capacity and payloads of up to 1050kg depending on variant. The dual-cab ute combines performance and technology at what FOTON describes as an attainable price point.

FOTON positions the model to meet demands across work and recreational use in one of Australia’s most competitive vehicle segments.

Inchcape was appointed as FOTON’s Australian distributor in 2024. The brand is China’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer and has led Chinese commercial vehicle sales for 19 consecutive years.

Customers can contact their local authorised FOTON retailer for information on the TUNLAND range and available services. Dealer locations are available at fotonaustralia.com.au/find-a-dealer.

Geely Holding targets top-five global ranking by 2030

Geely Holding Group is targeting global sales of more than 6.5 million vehicles and revenues exceeding 1 trillion RMB (AU$203b) by 2030 as it aims to break into the top five global automakers.

The Chinese group, which owns Volvo Cars, Zeekr, Polestar, Lotus, Lynk & Co, and Geely Auto, released its five-year strategic blueprint on February 10 under the banner “One Geely, Leading through Innovation and Integration”.

New energy vehicles are targeted to make up more than 75 per cent of total sales by 2030, with sales outside China accounting for more than a third of the group’s annual total.

2025 results underpin ambitions

The targets follow a record 2025 in which Geely Holding sold 4.116 million vehicles globally, up 26 per cent year-on-year and its fifth consecutive year of growth. NEV sales reached 2.293 million units, a 58 per cent increase, for a penetration rate of 56 per cent. The group ranked seventh globally and was the fastest-growing company among the top ten automotive groups.

Central to the strategy is closer collaboration across Geely’s brand portfolio. The group says it will leverage the domestic market strengths of Geely Auto, Geely Galaxy, Lynk & Co, and Zeekr alongside the established European and American presence of Volvo, Polestar, and Lotus. A partnership with Renault Group also features in the plan.

The group is targeting a 30 per cent reduction in both average R&D cycles and overall cost per model through shared new energy vehicle architectures covering A- to E-class vehicles.

Technology pipeline

Geely outlined a “Seven Dimension” technology ecosystem spanning intelligent driving, cockpit,

electrical and vehicle architecture, battery, electric drive, and hybrid powertrains.

Its G-Pilot intelligent driving platform is being developed for full L2 coverage across the range, with L3 pilots advancing and L4 capabilities and robotaxi operations being accelerated. The group says the thermal efficiency of its NordThor AI hybrid engine is expected to exceed 50 per cent.

New products on the horizon include the i-HEV Intelligent Dual Engine hybrid system, which Geely says will be the world’s first hybrid to feature “AI cloud-power” and target fuel consumption as low as 3L/100km. The upcoming Zeekr 8X will combine battery-electric performance with super hybrid capability.

Robotaxi and mobility plans

The group is also building what it calls an integrated “space-air-ground” mobility ecosystem, bringing together Geely Auto, aerial mobility subsidiary Aerofugia, ride-hailing platform Cao Cao Mobility, and satellite company Geespace. By 2030, it plans to deploy 100,000 customised robotaxi vehicles through Cao Cao Mobility with plans for global commercial operations.

Geely says it will push key factories towards carbon neutrality and work with suppliers to develop carbon reduction roadmaps over the next five years. The group is also launching a youth innovation incentive programme with an initial investment of 50 million yuan, growing to 300 million yuan.

The strategy marks a significant moment for the group as it celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2026.
