CBA and AutoGrab launch AI car buying assistant

Commonwealth Bank and AutoGrab have launched Australia’s first artificial intelligence assistant designed to help car buyers access industry data previously available only to dealerships.

The AI-powered tool addresses a significant information gap in the automotive market, where consumers have historically lacked access to comprehensive market data that dealers use daily.

AutoGrab chief commercial officer Saxon Odgers says the platform democratises information that has long been restricted to industry insiders.

“If you look at the housing market, information is so accessible to consumers around supply, demand, auction clearance rates, and what areas are doing well. In the automotive industry, that information isn’t accessible,” Odgers says.

The AI assistant operates on CBA’s Cars for CommBank platform, which features more than 15000 new and used vehicles from a national market of approximately 338000 cars currently listed for sale.

Commonwealth Bank executive general manager for consumer finance Joel Larsen says the tool addresses the complexity of car purchasing decisions by providing tailored comparisons across the entire market.

“People ask a lot of different questions about buying a car and they might go and speak to a car dealer, who might only tell them the comparison that they want to make with one brand, for example,” Larsen says.

“Our tool is actually helping customers compare different features and settings across the whole market of what’s available to them.”

The system uses AutoGrab’s extensive automotive database to answer specific queries about vehicle specifications, including towing capacity, fuel efficiency, and electric vehicle range. Buyers can describe their lifestyle needs – such as having children, pets, or requiring off-road capability – and receive personalised vehicle recommendations.

Sellers can also query the system about market conditions, including typical selling timeframes for specific models.

Pricing transparency features coming

The AI assistant will receive a significant update in the coming weeks to include comprehensive pricing information, addressing what Odgers describes as opacity in automotive pricing.

The enhanced system will show users how their vehicle’s value compares to similar models in the market, helping prevent situations where sellers are offered below-market prices.

“It’s designed to give consumers confidence around the price,” Odgers says, reducing the time spent on extensive comparison tasks.

Larsen says the pricing feature will extend beyond purchase price to include total cost of ownership calculations, comparing factors such as fuel costs between conventional, hybrid, and electric vehicles.

“We’re looking at more ways to help customers calculate the total cost of ownership,” Larsen says. “You can give people an overall picture of what the cost of ownership is going to be for the car, not just the upfront cost.”

The platform aims to reduce the typical three-month car buying journey by providing comprehensive information upfront. While anyone can browse the Cars for CommBank platform, CBA customers receive additional benefits including dealer connections and discounted finance options.

The development reflects broader trends in automotive technology adoption across the Tasman, where similar information asymmetries exist between dealers and consumers in vehicle markets.

Hyundai announces $3 billion AI collaboration with NVIDIA

Hyundai Motor Group and NVIDIA have announced a deepened collaboration to build an artificial intelligence factory powered by NVIDIA Blackwell infrastructure, targeting autonomous vehicles, smart factories and robotics applications.

The partnership involves approximately $3 billion in investment to advance Korea’s physical AI landscape, with plans to deploy 50,000 NVIDIA Blackwell graphics processing units (GPUs) for integrated AI model training, validation and deployment.

The collaboration extends beyond the two companies, with the Korean government signing a memorandum of understanding on 31 October to support national physical AI cluster development. The Ministry of Science and ICT, Hyundai Motor Group and NVIDIA will establish physical AI application centres, technology centres and data centres in Korea.

“For Korea to leap forward as a leading nation in AI, the advancement of physical AI is essential,” said Bae Kyung-hoon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT of the Republic of Korea.

“By combining Korea’s rich manufacturing data with NVIDIA’s cutting-edge AI infrastructure, we expect to build a win-win model through collaboration with domestic companies.”

Technical infrastructure and applications

Hyundai Motor Group will use three NVIDIA AI compute platforms as the foundation for its physical AI operations. The NVIDIA DGX platform will enable large-scale AI model training and software development, while NVIDIA Omniverse and Cosmos running on RTX PRO Servers will support digital twins and simulation for manufacturing optimisation and autonomous vehicle testing.

The NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor platform will serve as the AI processing unit for real-time intelligence in vehicles and robots, running on the safety-certified DriveOS operating system.

The collaboration will focus on developing factory digital twins using NVIDIA Omniverse Enterprise platform, creating virtual replicas of manufacturing environments for precision control, validation and predictive maintenance capabilities.

For autonomous vehicle development, Hyundai Motor Group is testing NVIDIA Omniverse and Cosmos platforms to build digital twins of regional driving environments, incorporating extensive simulations to advance development pipelines.

Advanced AI models built with NVIDIA Nemotron reasoning models and NeMo software will enable over-the-air updates of vehicle capabilities and features, including personalised digital assistants, intelligent infotainment and adaptive comfort systems.

“As we enter a new era of AI-powered mobility and smart factory, deepening our collaboration with NVIDIA marks a pivotal step forward,” said Euisun Chung, Executive Chair of Hyundai Motor Group.

“Together, we are not only building advanced technologies but also laying the foundation for a robust AI ecosystem in Korea.”

NVIDIA founder and chief executive Jensen Huang said AI will revolutionise transportation from vehicle design and manufacturing to robotics and autonomous driving.

ANCAP sets safety benchmark for large pickups

ANCAP has completed its first safety comparison of large pickup trucks, establishing a benchmark for crash avoidance technology in response to growing community concerns about the safety implications of increasingly popular heavy-duty vehicles.

The inaugural Large Utilities ADAS Safety Comparison examined five models currently available in the Australian and New Zealand markets: the Ford F-150, RAM 1500, Toyota LandCruiser 79 Series, Toyota Tundra, and Chevrolet Silverado 1500.

Ford’s updated F-150 achieved the highest score with 81% and a Platinum safety grading, fitted with what ANCAP described as one of the most comprehensive ranges of active safety features among the vehicles assessed.

The RAM 1500 secured second place with a 70% score and Gold grading, also featuring a broad range of well-performing safety technologies.

Both Toyota models achieved Silver gradings, with the LandCruiser 79 Series outperforming its Tundra stablemate at 55% compared to 50%. The Chevrolet Silverado scored lowest with 27% and a Bronze grading.

“Larger vehicles pose a bigger threat to other road users than passenger cars. The best way to reduce the potential risk of fatalities and serious injuries from large vehicles is to make sure they do the best possible job at avoiding a crash,” ANCAP Chief Executive Officer Carla Hoorweg said.

Growing market segment

The testing addresses a rapidly expanding vehicle segment, with over 22,500 large utes sold in Australia during 2024. Sales of the Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-150, RAM trucks, and Toyota Tundra have increased by 270% since 2019.

Market share for large pickups has risen from 5.9% to 9.4% since 2019. Excluding the long-established Toyota LandCruiser 79 Series, the market share of large utes has more than tripled from 1.4% to 4.4% over the same period.

“There is community concern over the size of pickups when they are driving in suburban streets, around

schools, and in built-up areas,” Hoorweg said. The safety implications are supported by United States data showing fatal pedestrian crashes involving pickups are four times more likely to occur during a turn than those involving cars. Vehicles with bonnet heights above one metre are approximately 45% more likely to cause pedestrian fatalities.

ANCAP applied international best practice safety testing to establish standards well above regulatory requirements for this vehicle category.

“Performance did vary but these results show there is a strong base to build from, and clear opportunity to achieve the performance levels seen in passenger vehicles,” Hoorweg said.

Future testing framework

Future phases could potentially extend into physical crash protection testing, ensuring complete assessment of both crash avoidance and crash protection capabilities.

ANCAP has expanded its traditional testing scope in recent years to include commercial vans and light trucks. The organisation has tested and rated passenger cars, SUVs, and light commercial vehicles including utes with gross vehicle mass up to approximately 3.5 tonnes since 1992.

The new Large Utilities comparison examines vehicles with gross combination mass of 7.0 tonnes or above, representing a further expansion to provide fleet buyers and consumers with independent safety information beyond traditional passenger cars.

ANCAP unveils new four-stage safety rating system from 2026

ANCAP will introduce a comprehensive new vehicle safety rating system from 2026 that evaluates cars across four distinct stages covering what happens before, during and after a crash.

The updated protocols represent the most significant overhaul of Australia’s independent vehicle safety testing in years, moving beyond traditional crash protection to assess the entire safety timeline from safe driving through to post-crash emergency response.

ANCAP chief executive Carla Hoorweg says the new approach responds directly to consumer feedback while preparing for future automotive technologies.

“You’ve spoken and we have listened. The Stages of Safety approach will allow ANCAP to incorporate useful feedback, enhance existing tests and incorporate new areas of focus,” Hoorweg says.

The changes come as 1592 Australians and New Zealanders lost their lives in vehicle-related crashes last year, underlining the ongoing need for improved safety outcomes across all aspects of road transport.

Four stages of assessment

The new rating system evaluates vehicles across four key areas, each scored out of 100 points with minimum thresholds determining overall star ratings.

Safe Driving considers vehicle technologies that assist in providing a safer driving experience for occupants. Crash Avoidance assesses systems that help prevent or mitigate incidents through warnings or autonomous intervention.

Crash Protection evaluates traditional elements including vehicle structure, seatbelts, airbags and head restraints to protect occupants, pedestrians and cyclists. Post-Crash addresses emergency response through rescue information and assistance.

The updated protocols specifically address consumer complaints about active driver assistance systems, which have been criticised for abrupt or irritating interventions. Under the new system, vehicles will be rewarded for smooth and intuitive operation alongside technical performance.

Emergency call systems prioritised

ANCAP will place greater emphasis on eCall systems that automatically connect with emergency services following a crash, acknowledging their critical role in the “golden hour” of emergency response.

More than 40% of new vehicles sold in Australia in 2024 featured eCall technology, but deployment remains limited in New Zealand with fewer than 10% of vehicles equipped with the system.

“New Zealanders should not be left behind when it comes to life saving technologies such as eCall, the potential for it to make a difference on New Zealand’s roads is too big for manufacturers to ignore,” Hoorweg says.

The protocols also address modern vehicle features including electrically-operated door handles, which must remain operable after crashes, and electric vehicle high-voltage battery isolation systems.

Real-world testing expansion

ANCAP will conduct more on-road testing to better evaluate how vehicle technology performs in realworld conditions beyond the test track.

This on-road evaluation will examine how well vehicles read and respond to actual road conditions, providing more detailed insights.

The new approach has been developed in collaboration with Euro NCAP’s vehicle safety experts, ensuring Australian and New Zealand consumers continue to benefit from internationally benchmarked crash testing and assessments.

Denza B5 and B8 target Australia’s luxury 4×4 market with plug-in hybrid

Premium new energy vehicle brand Denza will enter Australia later this year with two plug-in hybrid SUVs, the B5 and flagship B8, promising dual-motor 4WD, BYD’s Blade Battery tech and off-road hardware aimed at established premium rivals.

Built on BYD’s DM-O “super-hybrid” platform, both models pair petrol power with a rechargeable battery and twin motors. The B5 arrives in two trims — B5 and B5 Leopard — each producing 425kW/760Nm and using a 31.8kWh Blade Battery for up to 90km WLTP of electric-only driving. DC fast charging is up to 100kW.

The B5 Leopard adds off-road kit including DiSus-P hydraulic adaptive suspension, front and rear electrically actuated mechanical diff locks, and a 3,000kg braked towing capacity. Inside, both B5 variants seat five and provide up to 1064L of boot space, a 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen, 12.3-inch driver display, Nappa leather, a 360-degree camera and 11 airbags.

Sitting above it, the B8 will be offered in 6-seat (6S) and 7-seat (7S) layouts. It lifts output to 450kW/760Nm, keeps the 31.8kWh battery, increases DC fast-charge to 120kW, and fits a 91-litre fuel tank for long touring. Off-road hardware includes DiSus-P

suspension as standard, electric differential locks (front and rear on 6S) and a 3,500kg towing capacity.

Cabins add soft-closing doors, Nappa leather, heated/ventilated/massaging seats and a cooled/ heated storage box (-6°C to 50°C). The 6S gains second-row captain’s chairs. Tech highlights include a 15.6-inch rotating central screen, 12.3inch instrument display and an 18-speaker Devialet audio system, while safety lists 14 airbags and a 360-degree camera.

“With the B5 and B8, DENZA is taking a swing at the establishment,” Denza chief operating officer Mark Harland says.

“They’re purpose-built, premium SUVs that offer something the market hasn’t seen before –combining cutting-edge tech, serious off-road capability, and luxury that doesn’t ask you to compromise.”

Expressions of interest are open now, with orders due to start in early December. For more information, go to denza.com/au.

Ford drops bi-turbo diesel from Ranger and Everest lineup

Ford Australia has announced the 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel four-cylinder engine will no longer be available in the Ranger and Everest lineups as part of moves to “optimise” the local ute and SUV offerings.

The bi-turbo unit will be replaced by an updated 2.0-litre single turbo diesel engine, while Ford expands availability of its 3.0-litre V6 diesel across a wider range of vehicles.

“By focusing on the newly updated 2.0L turbo diesel and expanding the availability of our popular 3.0L V6, we’re giving customers more access to the power, torque, and refinement they love, whether they’re on the job site or heading out for a weekend adventure,” Ford Australia said in a statement.

While Ford’s announcement does not specifically mention emissions regulations, the impending Euro 7 standards are likely a factor in the decision. Highoutput diesel engines such as the bi-turbo unit face significant challenges meeting the stricter emissions requirements, with re-engineering costs proving prohibitive for many manufacturers.

Durability concerns may also influence the change. The current 2.0-litre engines use a “wet belt” timing system instead of a traditional timing chain, with the oil-covered rubber belt designed to reduce friction

and noise. However, global concerns about the long-term durability of this system have emerged in recent years.

The replacement 2.0-litre turbo diesel addresses these issues directly. Ford says the updated engine features “a new fuel injection system and timing chain for improved durability and performance.”

The Ranger Raptor will retain its 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol V6, while the Ranger PHEV continues with its 2.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with a 75kW electric motor.

Deliveries of the updated Ranger and Everest models with the revised engine lineup are scheduled to begin in the first half of 2026.

Work stress and depression

Despite spending decades helping others get better, Geoff’s greatest challenge was taking care of himself.

Geoff Toogood had always liked helping people. It was one of the main reasons he decided to become a doctor. On graduating from medical school, he landed his first job as a junior doctor at a hospital.

What Geoff didn’t know at the time was that his profession would have a significant impact on his own mental health.

The realities of being a junior doctor

On the surface, Geoff was living out his dream. In reality, he felt under siege.

“The stresses and the hours were significant. Often we would work 48, 56 hours in a row without going home or getting much sleep. This was what my life was like for three or four years,” recalls Geoff.

“The world of medicine is very hierarchical. It’s stoic, it’s competitive. Refusing to show weakness and pushing on is a trait that’s admired,” says Geoff. “At times, it can be an environment that cultivates mental health issues.”

Burning out but pushing on

Geoff did what many of his colleagues did – he simply put up with the stress. He started his training to become a cardiologist, a process that took eight years. Once his training was complete, Geoff jumped straight into a role as a consultant. It was full on, right away. On reflection, Geoff concedes he was clearly burnt out.

“I had all the symptoms. I was getting angry and disassociated from my work. I didn’t want to do the work, I was desperate for a rest,” he says.

Still, Geoff refused to take time off. And his poor mental health started impacting his day-to-day life.

During this period, Geoff’s found refuge in swimming. It

was quiet in the water and he could block everything else out, focusing all of his attention on his next stroke, his next breath. But even then, he couldn’t fully escape.

Confirming he wasn’t OK

Geoff had suspected he was depressed but couldn’t bring himself to say it aloud to another doctor.

“I ticked every box. I took an online survey and it confirmed that I was significantly depressed and advised me to seek treatment.”

Geoff booked an appointment with his GP. When he was finally called into the GP’s office, Geoff didn’t know how to begin. He broke down in tears. Then he said exactly what he’d known all along.

“I need help.”

Road to recovery and reducing stigma

On the recommendation of his GP, Geoff made the time to work with a psychologist and a psychiatrist. In addition to therapy, he was prescribed medication and he finally took some time off work.

Geoff also began to practice mindfulness, though not in the way one might assume. Swimming had always had a meditative effect for Geoff and he found playing the drums offered a similar form of release.

Geoff still plays the drums and gets into the water when he can – they remain key strategies for his wellbeing. His passion for helping others now extends beyond his work.

MG models earn five stars while Renault Duster receives three-star ANCAP rating

ANCAP Safety has released safety ratings for three models entering the Australasian market, with MG’s premium IM 6 and IM 5 both achieving five-star ratings while the Renault Duster received a three-star assessment.

The IM 6, positioned as one of MG’s entries into the premium car market, delivered standout crash test performance in the medium SUV category. The fully electric model achieved one of the highest frontal offset test scores recorded under current ANCAP protocols, scoring 7.54 points out of a possible 8.00.

This result was driven by strong occupant protection and the vehicle’s lower compatibility risk – meaning it poses less danger to occupants of an oncoming vehicle in a crash scenario.

The IM 5 large battery electric sedan matched its SUV sibling with a five-star rating across all variants. The model combined robust structural performance with effective crash restraint systems, maintaining a stable passenger cell during frontal and side impact testing.

Families considering the IM 5 will note its 91% Child Occupant Protection result, with child dummies receiving solid protection in both frontal and side collisions.

Both MG models demonstrated effective collision avoidance capabilities, impressing testers with their ability to reliably respond to pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists in autonomous emergency braking scenarios, including both straight-line and turning situations.

The Renault Duster compact SUV entered the Australian market with a three-star ANCAP safety rating, reflecting reduced safety performance compared to its competitors. While the model earned full points for driver protection in the oblique pole crash test and for driver and child passengers in side impact testing, results were mixed in other areas.

The frontal offset and full width tests revealed limitations, including weak protection of the driver’s chest in the frontal offset test. The Duster lacks a centre airbag, which contributed to its lower overall assessment.

The vehicle’s autonomous emergency braking system proved less effective in advanced test scenarios, particularly in turning or head-on situations and at higher speeds. The Duster also failed to respond to overtaking or oncoming vehicles in emergency lane keeping scenarios.

These limitations resulted in scores of 60% for Vulnerable Road User Protection and 58% for Safety Assist, restricting the overall rating to three stars.

“The safety ratings for the premium IM 5 and IM 6 demonstrate MG’s ability to deliver vehicle safety at a high level,” ANCAP chief executive Carla Hoorweg said.

“It’s encouraging to see this level of performance, and we hope to see these features carried across the broader MG range,” she said.

Hybrid surge leads used car market

Hybrid used car sales are continuing to climb as Australians seek vehicles that balance everyday practicality with reduced running costs and emissions, according to the latest Automotive Insights Report (AIR) from the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) and AutoGrab.

The October 2025 report shows 206,503 used vehicles were sold during the month, up 2.8% on September.

AADA chief executive James Voortman says hybrid demand has accelerated over the past two years.

“Used hybrid sales have more than doubled in the last two years, rising from 6,868 in October 2023 to 14,784 vehicles this month,” Voortman says.

“Consumers are clearly looking for practical options that deliver lower running costs and emissions without compromising on convenience. Hybrid vehicles are offering that middle ground with a proven technology that suits everyday driving and reflects growing environmental awareness.”

Hybrid listings have also lifted, rising 21.1% monthon-month as supply improves and confidence in the segment grows.

While used electric vehicle sales rose 7.9%, hybrids recorded the strongest growth of any powertrain, outpacing petrol and diesel options. Total listings eased 3.9% to 325,018, with dealers accounting for just over half of all sales.

SUVs remained the most popular segment, making up more than 43% of all used-car sales.

FOTON returns to Australia with new TUNLAND ute range

FOTON has returned to the Australian passenger vehicle market with the launch of its all-new TUNLAND ute range, targeting the mid-size segment between traditional dual-cab utes and larger full-size pickups. The range comprises two models – the V7 and V9 – both powered by a 2.0-litre Aucan turbo-diesel engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system and ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. The powertrain produces 120kW of power and 450Nm of torque, with towing capacity up to 3500kg and payload capacity reaching 1115kg depending on variant.

Pricing starts at $39,990 for the entry-level V7-C 4×2 model, positioning the TUNLAND as a value proposition in the competitive Australian ute market.

The V7-C is available in both 4×2 and 4×4 configurations, targeting commercial and fleet buyers with over 1000kg payload capacity and workfocused features. The V9-L and V9-S variants, both offered in 4×4 only, feature multi-link rear suspension and enhanced comfort features aimed at lifestyle buyers seeking versatility for work and recreation.

Design differences distinguish the two model types, with the V7 featuring a squared-off grille with horizontal bars for a utilitarian appearance, while the V9 adopts a broader hexagonal grille with refined detailing to emphasise its premium positioning.

All variants feature a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.6-inch infotainment screen, along with comprehensive advanced driver assistance systems including autonomous emergency braking, lane keep

assist, and blind spot monitoring.

“The all-new TUNLAND is the goldilocks of utes – not too big, not too small, but just right for Australian drivers,” FOTON Australia general manager Glen Cooper says.

“It blends the durability of FOTON’s global truckbuilding heritage with the refinement, space, and technology today’s customers expect.”

The TUNLAND range is backed by a seven-year unlimited kilometre warranty and seven years of roadside assistance, with service intervals set at 15,000 kilometres or 12 months. FOTON Australia, part of the Inchcape Australasia group, was appointed as the Australian distributor in 2024.

The vehicles are available through a growing national dealer network, with customers able to locate their nearest retailer through the company’s website.
