NEW Compass Cars thanks to Cricks Sunshine Coast!

The Compass Institute Inc. is an award-winning Sunshine Coast based ‘For Purpose’ organisation, dedicated to providing support for people with intellectual and/or physical disabilities.

Compass officially commenced in 1991, but its origin story began many years earlier in a quiet suburb in 1960’s Brisbane. It’s the story of two boys, David and Geoffrey.

Geoffrey had been born with cerebral palsy and an intellectual impairment. He wore braces on both legs, had one malformed arm and struggled with his speech. He was left out by the neighbourhood children and even bullied by some.

The two boys spent a great deal of time together walking to and from school, playing in the park, and doing whatever young boys do! Over time, David found that Geoffrey was always kind, he was incredibly grateful for every little thing… and he even laughed at all of his jokes! David learned that while he accepted Geoffrey exactly as he was, Geoffrey also completely accepted him as he was. This was a

striking realisation and one that would go on to shape David’s life.

The intent of the Compass service model has from day one been to dramatically change the philosophy behind disability support services – from one of passive recreation to a pathway of lifelong learning, skills-based training and vocational opportunities.

Today, 100+ staff support over 180 Trainees (people with disabilities) via 6 Campuses and a range of Compass-built social enterprises, from Caboolture through to Gympie. Compass’s social enterprises include a fully functional farm, multiple cafes, a retail outlet, a commercial kitchen, an Assistance Dog program and much more – all offering life-changing opportunities for young people with disabilities.

Compass Cars

GetGenuine Dealer Cricks are a proud supporter of Compass, supplying “Compass cars” used for transportation of trainees, errands, events, and even visiting some special animal friends.

In addition, Cricks Sunshine Coast continuously purchases specially prepared boxes of jams & chutneys made out on Compass Farm and puts a box in every new car they sell. They also collaborated to bring the Compass Connections Café to life in Nambour, and sponsor Happy and Cherokee, two beautiful assistance dogs.

Toyota HiAce and Mitsubishi Outlander retain five-star ANCAP ratings

The Toyota HiAce and Mitsubishi Outlander have both retained their five-star ANCAP safety ratings following significant safety upgrades and re-testing against the organisation’s more stringent 2025 criteria.

Both manufacturers submitted updated versions of their vehicles for reassessment, demonstrating what ANCAP describes as a proactive approach to maintaining competitive safety standards for Australian and New Zealand customers.

Toyota HiAce upgrades

The H30 series Toyota HiAce originally achieved its five-star rating when it entered Australian and New Zealand markets in 2019, tested against the criteria in place at that time. Six years later, Toyota has upgraded its high-selling commercial van with an expanded range of crash protection and crash avoidance features.

airbag effectiveness, and whiplash performance.

Additional upgrades include a direct driver monitoring system, expanded AEB capability covering turning and motorcycle detection scenarios, and broadened lane support functionality.

Safety enhancements added to vehicles built from June 2025 enable the HiAce to achieve five-star performance in the more demanding MPDB frontal offset and far-side impact tests. Both tests were introduced to ANCAP’s regime in 2020, after the HiAce’s original assessment.

Key upgrades include a centre airbag to reduce occupant-to-occupant injury risk, Emergency Lane Keeping, intelligent adaptive cruise control, and advanced speed sign recognition. The HiAce also receives a significantly upgraded autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system capable of intervention in junction, crossing, and head-on scenarios, plus extended vulnerable road user protection that can now detect and respond to motorcyclists as well as pedestrians and cyclists.

Mitsubishi Outlander improvements

The ZM series Mitsubishi Outlander first achieved its five-star rating when introduced to Australia and New Zealand in 2022. Updated Outlander vehicles – petrol variants built from April 2025 and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) variants built from July 2025 – gain improvements to restraints, centre

ANCAP chief executive officer Carla Hoorweg says the organisation’s test and scoring protocols are intentionally updated every few years to recognise safety advancements manufacturers bring to market and encourage ongoing improvement.

“Think of smartphones or computers. With each new version, consumers expect better performance and added features. Vehicles are no different – safety should continually evolve, and these reassessments demonstrate manufacturers’ commitment to ongoing safety improvements,” Hoorweg says.

The reassessment pathway has been available since 2018 and is open to any manufacturer that brings safety improvements to market. To qualify, a manufacturer needs to show significant safetyrelevant changes. Reassessment criteria also apply where safety-related changes are negative, such as the removal of key features.

Tesla launches Full Self-Driving in Australia with $149 monthly subscription

Tesla has launched Full Self-Driving (Supervised) in Australia, making it the first right-hand drive market globally where the advanced driver assistance system is publicly available.

The technology is now available for Model 3 and Model Y vehicles equipped with Tesla’s HW4 hardware, with customers able to purchase the full package for $10,100 or access it through an upcoming subscription service priced at $149 per month.

The subscription pricing represents a significant cost consideration for buyers, with the monthly fee equating to approximately six years of payments to match the full purchase price.

Rollout and availability

Tesla says eligible customers who have already purchased the Full Self-Driving Capability will receive the feature through an over-the-air update from Thursday morning, allowing them to activate FSD (Supervised) for their commute to work.

The system is available as an optional package for all new Tesla vehicles purchased in Australia, while existing owners of eligible vehicles can upgrade by purchasing the FSD (Supervised) package.

Tesla is making test drives of vehicles with FSD (Supervised) available at Tesla locations across Australia now.

Supervised driving technology

FSD (Supervised) attempts to drive to destinations by following road curves, stopping at and negotiating intersections, making turns, navigating roundabouts, and entering or exiting highways under active driver supervision.

The system maintains speed and following distance from vehicles ahead, slows down and stops at traffic lights and stop signs, and reacts to pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles on the road.

Tesla’s camera-based Tesla Vision system utilises advanced cameras and neural network processing

to deliver the technology, with 360-degree visibility to check blind spots and manoeuvre between lanes while avoiding other road users.

Driver monitoring requirements

Despite its name, FSD (Supervised) does not make Tesla vehicles autonomous and requires constant driver attention and readiness to take immediate action.

The cabin camera monitors driver attentiveness when the system is engaged, displaying warnings if drivers repeatedly look away from the road or ignore prompts to apply slight force to the steering wheel.

If warnings are repeatedly ignored, the system disables for the remainder of the drive. Should a driver fail to resume manual steering, the vehicle sounds a continuous chime, activates warning flashers, and slows to a complete stop.

Tesla will suspend FSD (Supervised) access for drivers who receive five “strikeouts” – instances where the system disengages for the remainder of a trip following several audio and visual warnings for inattentiveness.

The launch follows a successful demonstration of FSD (Supervised) in Brisbane and represents Tesla’s expansion of autonomous driving technology into international markets beyond its initial North American rollout.

Kia reaches one million Australian sales with Tasman delivery

Kia Australia has achieved its one millionth vehicle sale through the delivery of a Denim Blue Tasman X-Pro Dual Cab to Queensland customers Andrea and James Allendorf at Motorama Kia Moorooka.

The milestone delivery took place on 3 September, marking 37 years since Kia first entered the Australian market in 1988 with the Rocsta model through private distributors.

The Allendorfs, who own Internal Demolitions, received their fifth Kia vehicle as part of the landmark sale. James Allendorf says the family has strong confidence in the brand, having previously owned a Carnival and other Kia models.

“Our first Kia purchase was a Kia Carnival, and this (Tasman) is now our fifth Kia in the family. True story, we didn’t even test drive the Tasman. We drove past Motorama and then went and sat in one, and knew we wanted it,” Allendorf says.

Accelerated growth trajectory

market. The products have evolved, perceptions of the brand have changed, and these two factors have played an important role in Kia’s continuing growth,” Piccoli says.

Kia’s journey to one million sales has accelerated significantly in recent years. The brand reached 500,000 total sales in 2018, taking 30 years to achieve that milestone. The second 500,000 sales were completed in just seven years.

Kia Australia became a direct subsidiary of the South Korean manufacturer in 2006, having previously operated through import distributors Itochu and Ateco since 1988.

The brand achieved its first top-three sales ranking in Australia in 2022 and surpassed 80,000 annual sales for the first time in 2024. Kia projects 90,000 sales for 2025, representing a 267% increase from the 33,736 vehicles sold in 2015.

Chief Operating Officer Dennis Piccoli says the brand’s evolution has been driven by product development and changing market perceptions.

“The Kia brand has gone from strength to strength, thriving in a very competitive and challenging local

Dealer network recognition

Chief Executive Officer Damien Meredith credits the dealer network for the milestone achievement, with representatives from Motorama joining Kia ambassadors Pat Rafter and Darren Lockyer for the handover ceremony.

“Reaching one million new car sales is a testament to the hard work and loyalty that each of our dealer network partners has placed in the Kia brand. We certainly couldn’t reach this milestone without our customers from over the years,” Meredith says.

Kia’s growth has been supported by the introduction of a seven-year warranty in 2014, a local tuning programme led by Australian engineer Graeme Gambold, and a refreshed brand identity in 2021. The brand’s lineup spans from the Picanto micro car to the Carnival people mover and the recently launched Tasman light commercial vehicle.

Foton opens dealer network as Tunland hybrid ute orders begin

Foton Australia has launched its dealer network and opened pre-orders for the Tunland hybrid ute, with pricing starting from $39,990 plus on-road costs.

The Chinese commercial vehicle manufacturer has secured 19 dealers across New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory for its entry into the competitive Australian ute market.

The Tunland features a 2.0-litre Aucan turbo-diesel engine paired with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology and a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. The powertrain delivers 120kW at 3600rpm and 450Nm of torque between 1500rpm and 2400rpm, with a 3500kg braked towing capacity.

Foton is offering the Tunland in two model grades targeting different market segments. The V7 prioritises durability for fleet and trade use with over 1000kg payload capacity, while the V9 adds multilink rear suspension and higher-grade features for lifestyle-oriented buyers.

Dealer network spans major markets

The initial dealer network includes major automotive retail groups such as Inchcape Automotive Retail, Eagers Automotive and Cricks, with locations spanning from Cairns in far north Queensland to Perth in Western Australia.

Key metropolitan markets covered include Sydney (Artarmon, Parramatta, Penrith), Melbourne (Bundoora, Deer Park, Mulgrave), Brisbane, Adelaide

and Perth, alongside regional centres including Mackay, Nambour, Townsville and Cairns.

Customers can reserve vehicles online through the Foton Australia website or through authorised dealers, with first deliveries expected later this quarter.

Glen Cooper, general manager of Foton Australia, said the launch represents a major milestone for the brand. “The all-new Tunland offers something truly unique – the space and toughness of a larger workhorse, paired with the comfort and driveability of a modern SUV, all without a premium price tag,” Cooper said.

“It’s been locally tested and tuned for our conditions, and now with pre-orders open plus healthy retail representation across the country, we’re another step closer to getting this capable new ute into Aussie driveways.”

Foton Australia is part of the Inchcape Australasia group and was appointed as the Australian distributor in 2024. The parent company is China’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer and has led Chinese commercial vehicle sales for 19 consecutive years.

The Tunland will be backed by a seven-year unlimited kilometre warranty, with additional dealer locations expected to be confirmed ahead of the first vehicle arrivals.

Three models secure five-star ANCAP safety ratings

ANCAP has awarded five-star safety ratings to three new vehicles targeting key Australian market segments – the Omoda 9 plug-in hybrid SUV, LDV Terron 9 diesel ute, and third-generation Audi Q5 medium SUV.

The ratings expand safety-certified options for buyers in segments that continue to dominate Australian new vehicle sales, with SUVs representing more than 60% of the market.

Omoda 9

The Omoda 9 plug-in hybrid delivered strong allround safety performance, scoring 90% for Adult Occupant Protection and 87% for Child Occupant Protection.

LDV Terron 9

The diesel-powered LDV Terron 9 secured maximum points in the full-width frontal test, side impact test, and occupant-to-occupant test, contributing to an overall Adult Occupant Protection score of 91%.

Maximum points were also awarded for protection of child occupants in the frontal offset and side impact tests, leading to a Child Occupant Protection score of 89%.

The ute’s crash avoidance capability impressed across the range of scenarios tested, with notable performance in emergency lane keep scenarios and lower-speed AEB reverse scenarios where the vehicle can help prevent reversing collisions with adult and child pedestrians.

Good to adequate levels of injury protection were recorded for the driver and adult passengers across almost all crash tests, with the exception of marginal protection for the driver’s chest in the oblique pole test.

The vehicle’s crash avoidance systems demonstrated effective performance across test scenarios, with good results in autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and lane support tests involving other vehicles, pedestrians, and motorcyclists. These results contributed to scores of 81% for Vulnerable Road User Protection and 82% for Safety Assist.

“The safety performance of the Omoda 9 will provide assurance to buyers looking to move to an alternative-powered Large SUV,” ANCAP chief executive Carla Hoorweg says.

“This is an excellent result for LDV’s new generation ute,” Hoorweg says.

Audi Q5

The third-generation Audi Q5 impressed in tests of its crash prevention ability, achieving perfect scores in forward, junction, and T-bone crossing AEB tests. Maximum points were also recorded in AEB motorcyclist tests.

Good occupant protection scores were achieved for the driver in the full-width frontal, side impact, far side impact, and oblique pole crash tests.

However, the Q5 received a relatively high 7.00 point penalty for vehicle-to-vehicle compatibility in the frontal offset test, with ANCAP assessing it as presenting a higher risk to an oncoming vehicle.

“The Audi Q5 provides strong occupant protection and effective crash avoidance, with vehicleto-vehicle compatibility noted as an area for improvement,” Hoorweg says.

The five-star ANCAP safety rating applies to all Q5 and SQ5 variants available in Australia and New Zealand.

Depression and quitting smoking

Quitting smoking is one of the most important things you can do to improve your health. Quitting is also likely to improve your mental wellbeing. If you’ve had depression in the past, your chances of quitting for good are about the same as someone who hasn’t had depression.

Smoking and stress

Many people who smoke say that smoking helps to calm them down and reduces stress. After you’ve been smoking for a while, your body gets used to nicotine (the addictive drug in tobacco) and relies on it to feel normal. The relief you feel when you smoke comes from having nicotine in your system again. The more you smoke, the more often you will feel the need for a cigarette to relieve the stress of nicotine withdrawal. Quitting breaks this vicious cycle.

Smoking actually causes stress. Having a cigarette is not going to make your problems go away. Many people who quit find that, after a while, they feel less stressed and their mood improves.

Benefits of quitting

Here are just some of the benefits people who have quit smoking report:

• Mental health - After a while you will be less stressed, feel less guilty, be able to think more clearly and feel more in control.

• Physical health - You will be in better overall health, breathe more easily, be better able to exercise, have more energy, have better skin and hair, and you will sleep better.

• Financial - You will have more money in your pocket for day-to-day essentials, as well as treats.

• Social - You will feel more comfortable spending time with others in smokefree environments, such as cinemas or cafes.

Will quitting make your depression better or worse?

At the beginning, it can feel like not smoking is making your depression worse. It can be hard to tell the difference between nicotine withdrawal and symptoms of depression — mood swings or depression-like feelings are a normal part of withdrawal. If after quitting, you experience worsened symptoms of depression (every day for two weeks or more), see your doctor.

Advice

for quitting

There are many ways to quit smoking. Finding your own strategy for quitting is important. Different things work for different people, and you may need to try more than one approach before you succeed. Knowing what has been proven to help people quit can help you develop your own quitting strategy that gives you the best chance at success.

• Write a list of reasons to quit

• Plan how you will quit and choose the date

• Use available support (such as coaching/professional support and quitting medications including nicotine replacement)

• Find out what triggers your desire to smoke

• Work out coping strategies, for example change your routines to help break habits related to smoking, manage stress before it gets bad, and distract yourself to avoid things that trigger your desire to smoke.

• Find healthy ways to fill the gap. Try enjoyable and relaxing activities with the time and money you’ve saved from quitting.

• Believe in yourself

• Don’t give up trying to quit

Tesla preparing to launch ‘Full Self-Driving’ in Australia

Tesla is preparing to introduce next-level driverassist technology to Australia, with the launch of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) (FSD-S).

While the company has not confirmed an exact date, Australia and New Zealand are set to be among the first right-hand-drive markets to receive the system. AutoTalk expects an announcement to be made today on its arrival.

Media were invited to Brisbane earlier this month for a first-hand look. In a rare move, journalists were sent out alone for three hours in heavy city traffic and rain to test how the system performed on public roads. The event was kept secret until today, and reporters were not allowed to ask Tesla staff questions on record.

FSD-S expands Tesla’s existing Autopilot from motorway lane-keeping into more complex driving environments. Once a destination is set in the satnav and the on-screen activation button pressed, the car attempts to handle the full journey — steering, braking, lane changes, intersections, roundabouts and motorway merges.

The technology relies on eight exterior cameras connected to Tesla’s in-house Full Self-Driving computer. The system processes visual data at 36 frames per second to build a 3D model of the road environment and predict the safest path forward. Unlike many rivals, Tesla does not use lidar, radar or high-definition mapping, betting instead on vision-based artificial intelligence.

meaning the driver must remain in control and is legally responsible at all times. Tesla is relying on the basis that at this level of assistance a person is still “in control” of a vehicle, making supervised systems like FSD-S permissible. Fully driverless cars are not yet legal.

The bigger issue may be its name — regulators and industry groups could be watching closely, particularly over how a system marketed as “Full Self-Driving” is presented when it legally remains supervised driving.

On-road experience

Driver monitoring is central to the system. An infrared camera watches head and eye movement. If the driver looks away for too long, alerts escalate; continued inattention disables the feature for the remainder of the trip.

Price and availability

FSD-S costs $10,100 if purchased outright. Tesla is considering a subscription model and a 30-day free trial for new deliveries, although these options are not yet confirmed.

The rollout will begin with the latest Model 3 and Model Y vehicles fitted with Hardware 4. Customers who have already purchased the Full Self-Driving package are expected to be first in line.

Legal setting

Tesla stresses that FSD-S is not autonomous driving. It is classified as a Level 2 driver-assist system,

Testing in Brisbane showed a system that was confident but cautious when necessary. It flowed with suburban traffic and handled roundabouts smoothly, though at busy intersections it sometimes waited longer than a human driver might before proceeding and got caught trying to get past a one-lane bridge.

On motorways, the car merged cleanly and maintained pace with other vehicles. In urban areas it recognised scooters, pedestrians and traffic wardens, though vague hand signals prompted one manual intervention. In a park, the system slowed appropriately for a bird on the road, and when passing a dealership the on-screen visualisation showed dozens of moving icons but the car itself held its course without distraction.

On winding roads the Tesla traced natural cornering lines. Throughout, the driver-facing camera was less intrusive than some rival systems, allowing natural head checks without frequent alerts.

Australia Post marks Ford centenary with limited stamp collection

Australia Post has released a limited-edition stamp collection featuring four iconic Ford models to commemorate Ford Australia’s 100th anniversary in 2025.

The collection showcases the Model T, XP Falcon, XA Falcon GT, and FG X Falcon XR8, representing a century of Ford’s presence in Australian motoring history. Each stamp carries a face value of $1.70 and includes black-and-white photographs of Ford’s

Broadmeadows factory by renowned photographer Wolfgang Sievers.

Australia Post Executive General Manager Retail, Brand and Marketing Josh Bannister says Ford has been part of everyday Australian life for a century.

“As we celebrate Ford Australia’s Centenary, we’re excited to collaborate with Australia Post to commemorate four notable models from the past 100 years,” Ford Australia and New Zealand President and CEO Andrew Birkic says.

“We’re honoured that Ford has found a place in the lives of so many Australians through the decades, and this new collectable stamp range is a keepsake for all fans that bleed blue.”

“It honours the cars, the people who built them, and the stories they’ve created across the country. Australia Post is proud to commemorate 100 years of Ford in Australia with a stamp that reflects its lasting impact,” Bannister says.

Toyota HiAce updated with more safety tech

Toyota has refreshed its HiAce commercial van for 2025, adding extra driver-assistance and convenience features as it enters Australian showrooms.

The expanded Toyota Safety Sense suite now includes lane trace assist, which helps keep the van centred in its lane when adaptive cruise control is engaged.

An emergency driver support system pairs with lane trace assist to detect if the driver becomes unresponsive while cruise is active; after audio and visual warnings, it can switch on the hazards and bring the vehicle to a controlled stop. Safe exit assist also links with the blind-spot monitor to warn occupants of approaching vehicles or cyclists when opening a road-side door.

Cruise control has been broadened to high-speed adaptive operation on manual models, with fullspeed capability on autos. These join existing systems such as automatic high beam, lane departure alert, a pre-collision safety system and speed sign assist. Passive safety steps up with a new centre airbag, lifting most grades to eight airbags; LWB Crew variants add two side airbags for a total of 10.

Lane trace assist arrives alongside electric power steering, which also promises lighter, more comfortable low-speed manoeuvring. Inside, every

grade gains a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster with nine user-selectable displays.

Toyota says air-conditioning performance improves with a new refrigerant, and an electric parking brake is fitted across the range except the entry-level LWB manual. Exterior changes are subtle: black exterior mirrors and, on SLWB vans with barn doors, two rear wipers.

Toyota Australia vice-president sales, marketing and franchise operations, Sean Hanley, says the upgrades sharpen the HiAce’s appeal for private and business buyers.

“The HiAce is trusted by customers across the country to haul a wide variety of products to help their businesses, be it goods, tools, items for delivery, produce and so much more,” Hanley says.

“These latest upgrades ensure improved levels of safety for both occupants and other road users, which is of particular importance given how much time drivers spend on the road in their HiAce.”

The range continues with long-wheelbase and super-long-wheelbase bodies, panel or glass rear doors, and either a lift-up tailgate or barn-style doors. Power comes from Toyota’s 2.8-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder, making up to 130kW/450Nm with a six-speed automatic driving the rear wheels; the base LWB manual offers 420Nm through a sixspeed manual.
