Apple expands CarPlay capabilities and digital car key support

Apple has announced a major upgrade to its in-vehicle systems with the rollout of iOS 26, introducing new CarPlay features and expanding support for digital car keys across more vehicle brands.

The updates were unveiled at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference and are set to roll out globally later this year.

CarPlay gets smarter and safer CarPlay now features a refreshed user interface with a “Liquid Glass” design and introduces support for Live Activities and interactive widgets. These allow real-time updates—such as calendar reminders or rideshare progress—to be displayed directly on the vehicle’s screen, improving usability without driver distraction.

Message notifications have been redesigned to be less intrusive, and users can now respond with emoji “tapbacks” without leaving the CarPlay interface. Apple has also introduced accessibility improvements, including text enlargement and sound detection alerts for emergency vehicles.

Manufacturer integration expanding CarPlay Ultra, a more deeply integrated version of the system that can control climate settings and display across instrument clusters, is currently limited to select Aston Martin models. However, Apple has confirmed it is working with

additional manufacturers including Hyundai, Kia, Porsche, Ford and Renault to bring the system to future vehicles.

Apple did not confirm a timeline for when these features would be available beyond existing partners.

Digital car keys go mainstream Apple’s digital car key platform, which allows drivers to unlock and start their vehicles using an iPhone or Apple Watch, is gaining wider adoption. Brands supporting the feature now include BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Audi.

The system works via NFC or ultra-wideband (UWB), depending on the vehicle, and allows remote sharing of access with other users.

Volvo’s EX30 is among the latest models to offer the feature via a software update.

The global launch of iOS 26 is expected in the second half of 2025.

Toyota’s flagship Tundra Platinum arriving in dealerships in May

Toyota Australia’s Tundra pick-up range is set to grow with the addition of the flagship Platinum grade, which arrives in local showrooms in May.

Priced from $172,990 plus on-road costs, the Platinum completes the Tundra range, joining the Limited grade which is available from dealerships from $155,990 plus on-road costs.

The Tundra Platinum builds on the interior specification of the Tundra Limited, while adding unique exterior styling elements which further the full-size pick-up’s impressive on-road presence.

Toyota Australia spokesperson Sean Hanley says the Platinum would provide an even more luxurious experience for Tundra customers.

“The Tundra set new benchmarks for Toyota when it launched last year, with its 4.5T towing capability, twin-turbo powertrain and the first factorybacked right-hand-drive conversion program with Walkinshaw Automotive Group,” Hanley says.

“Bringing the new Tundra Platinum to market elevates the luxurious experience of our full-size pick-up, ensuring that customers can drive and tow over long distances in utmost comfort,” he says.

Externally, the Tundra Platinum provides an even bolder, more distinctive aesthetic than its Limited sibling, with the new grade featuring chrome-plated mesh-style front grille and side door trim, black tailgate handles and window surrounds, and stealthy black 20-inch alloy wheels.

Both the Limited and Platinum are now offered with a powered tailgate, providing additional convenience for loading and unloading the cargo area.

The front seats also offer a massaging function, while rear outboard passengers gain seat heating and ventilation. The steering wheel is also heated and provides powered memory tilt and telescopic adjustment.

All Tundra grades are offered with a 14-inch multimedia system supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto, paired with a premium 12-speaker JBL audio system and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster display.

The Platinum is underpinned by Toyota’s highestoutput powertrain offered to date in Australia –the 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 which produces 290kW/649Nm from its petrol engine and 36kW/250Nm from the electric motor for a combined output of 326kW/790Nm.

The electric motor-generator is placed between the engine and 10-speed automatic transmission in a parallel hybrid arrangement, enabling electric motor-only driving at low speeds, assistance for the engine, a stop-start system and energy regeneration from braking.

In two-wheel drive, power is fed to the rear wheels with a selectable four-wheel drive system and lowrange gearing to help tackle low-traction terrain.

The Tundra Platinum is available with a choice of seven exterior colours, consisting of six metallic hues –Eclipse Black, Graphite, Silver Storm, Jungle Khaki, Saturn Blue, and Feverish Red – along with Frosted White crystal pearl.

Alpine performance brand to return to Australia

The Alpine A390 high-performance electric car has been unveiled in Europe overnight – and it is coming to Australia.

Group Renault’s performance brand will return to Australia after a four-year hiatus, starting with the sleek Alpine A390 fastback.

The last time Alpine was sold in Australia was from 2018 to 2022.

“We are proud to announce the return of the iconic Alpine performance brand to Australia,” said Glen Sealey, the general manager of Alpine Australia.

“We appreciate there is a lot of interest in this vehicle and Alpine’s future plans in Australia. However pricing, timing and specifications will be announced closer to local arrivals.”

The aim of the A390 – described by Alpine as a “racing car in a suit” – was to reinvent the spirit of the A110 sports-car in a five-seat electric fastback.

Three electric motors (one at the front, two at the rear), combined with advanced Active Torque Vectoring technology, deliver a level of agility and sophistication usually reserved for more expensive vehicle segments.

Globally, the A390 is the second model in Alpine’s ‘Dream Garage’, following the A290 hot hatch and

preceding the future A110 sports car, which will also be electric.

The new-era Alpine vehicles utilise the advanced ‘Ampere’ electric platform and, in France, offer vehicle-to-grid charging.

The A390 will be manufactured in France at the company’s production facility in Dieppe, which is undergoing a transformation that will see it become a bridge between the company’s history and the future, both in terms of electrification and production volumes.

The electric motors will be manufactured at the Cléon plant. The high-performance Verkor batteries use cells and modules produced in Dunkirk and assembled in Douai.

The tyres were developed by Michelin specifically for the A390, to enhance its dynamics. And, staying with the strong French theme, the A390 is available with a high-end Devialet audio system.

Most recently, the award-winning Alpine A110 midengined sportscar – powered by a turbocharged 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that delivered power to the rear wheels – was sold in Australia from 2018 to 2022, during which time 106 examples were sold.

Limited-volume Lexus LBX Morizo RR lands in Australia

The Lexus LBX Morizo RR has arrived in Australian dealerships, and it will be built in limited volume, priced at $76,490 excluding on-road costs.

The Morizo RR arrival brings the number of LBX grades to three as Lexus continues to expand its range to meet diverse customer needs.

The compact SUV’s introduction in March 2024 was warmly received, appealing instantly to customers looking for a luxury small car. Many of the 1,470 LBX examples delivered in 2024 were to first-time Lexus new car buyers. In 12 months, the LBX has established itself as a key model in the Lexus range, accounting for more than 10% of Lexus deliveries.

Toyota Motor Company global chairman Akio Toyoda loves the LBX he helped develop so much that he bestowed it with the Morizo tag.

Powering the LBX Morizo RR is a 1.6-litre turbocharged inline three-cylinder petrol engine producing 206kW at 6500rpm and 390Nm of torque from 32504600rpm, accelerating from zero to 100km/h in 5.2

seconds. A sophisticated AWD system automatically distributes the front-rear torque according to road conditions and grip, with the standard Torsen limited-slip differential on the rear axle adding to the driving thrills.

Lexus Australia chief executive John Pappas says the LBX Morizo RR is one of the most exciting Lexus vehicles to be launched this decade.

“Cars like the Lexus LBX Morizo RR remind us why we love to drive, when we take the long way to get to a destination and then don’t want to get out of the driver’s seat when we do,” Pappas said.

“The LBX Morizo RR encapsulates all the virtues of Lexus, merging bold design with refined performance and the attention to detail that defines the brand. It speaks to the Lexus Driving Signature of intuitive dynamic responses faithful to the driver’s input, Takumi craftsmanship with a beautifully finished interior and the refined comfort of a true Lexus,” he says.

My ability is bigger than my disability

From being diagnosed with cerebral palsy to breaking world records, Isis Holt has had a different upbringing to most teenagers.

Isis Holt is not your average teenager. At 18, she was already a world champion sprinter and a two-time Paralympic silver medallist. But Isis knows that success and hard work are not always the winning formula for positive mental health.

“There were definitely times where I’d be in the middle of doing exams or a really intense training block and I’d be like, ‘I can’t deal with anything because everything is happening at once,” she says. There’s the pressure of teachers and your peers, as well, wanting to do well with schoolwork, but also make friends that can stick around, and be socially accepted.

Isis lives with cerebral palsy, diagnosed at 11 years old – although she has never seen this as an obstacle to reaching her goals. “My ability is bigger than my disability,” she says.

Around the time she started running, she came to realise that her disability did not define her.

“Until then, I was never keen to get involved in any form of competitive sport because I was so used to coming last. When I got involved in para sport, I realised it was this

whole environment of empowering individuals based on what they could do, not what their disability was, and I loved that. At 14, that was really exciting.”

When the pressure of study, sport and life in general converged, Isis was able to overcome these moments of doubt through her support networks. Ironically, it was training that proved a key outlet for releasing the pressure valve.

“Having something to focus all of your attention on makes such a huge difference. It was important to find something that consumed my attention and direct my effort somewhere else, away from school.”

Isis has developed an appreciation for the importance of mental health.

“I’ve become better at talking about my own mental health. I know how awful it is to have to sit there and feel like you have to deal with something by yourself,” she says. “No matter where you’re at in your life, it’s never unacceptable to say you need help with something, or that you’re struggling.”

Isis will always be able to draw on her experiences on the race track. “It reminds you of the things you have done and what you can do, rather than everything that you think you can’t.”

Following the example of other export markets for the South Korean brand, from June 1, 2025, KGM SsangYong will become known as KGM Australia.

The distribution company will also introduce the new Actyon SUV to the Australian market on that date, which is the first vehicle to be designed and fully developed under the KGM brand.

“Unveiling new vehicles is always a highlight for us all, particularly when it’s something as striking and appealing as Actyon, a modern revival of the world’s

first coupe-style SUV,” KGM Australia managing director Joseph Lee says.

“It’s timely we fully embrace the KGM branding here in Australia and celebrate the latest vehicle design language with a brand logo re-fresh, to align with KGM’s global identity and better reflect our commitment to design excellence.”

KGM Australia will also add the new slogan, “Korean, built to last.”

The all-new Actyon is a modern revival of the world’s first coupe-style SUV. Its sleek, contemporary design embodies a new brand philosophy, ‘Practical Creativity,’ blending style, practicality, and luxury.

Accompanying the new KGM branding, Actyon’s twomodel grade line-up will be made up of K50 and K60, priced from $47,000, and $50,000 respectively.

The KGM Actyon range is covered by a 7-year / unlimited kilometre warranty and 5- year roadside assistance. It will be on-sale from June 1, 2025.

Mitsubishi, Foxtron sign EV deal for Australia and NZ

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Taiwanese electric vehicle manufacturer Foxtron Vehicle Technologies to supply a new model for the Oceania market from 2026.

The vehicle, to be developed by Foxtron and manufactured in Taiwan by Yulon Motor, will be introduced as an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) model under the Mitsubishi badge. It will be sold in Australia and New Zealand in the second half of 2026 and will form part of Mitsubishi’s long-term product plan for the region through to 2030.

The new model is expected to offer strong EV performance and advanced infotainment features, with Mitsubishi targeting the platform specifically for local driving preferences in the region.

“Mitsubishi Motors and Foxtron will proceed with discussions towards a definitive agreement,” the company said in a statement.

The deal marks a further step in Mitsubishi Motors’ global electrification strategy. The carmaker is rolling

out hybrid and plug-in hybrid models across multiple regions, including upgrades to its Outlander PHEV and new hybrid EV versions of its Xpander and Xforce SUVs in Southeast Asia.

The company says its approach to electrification includes leveraging its alliance with Renault and Nissan. Mitsubishi is already sourcing OEM electric models from Renault in Europe and Nissan in North America and is considering similar arrangements with alliance partners in other regions, including Australia and NZ.

Mitsubishi Motors, headquartered in Tokyo, employs about 28,000 people globally and maintains production facilities across Japan and Southeast Asia. The company was an early mover in the EV space, having launched the world’s first massproduced electric vehicle, the i-MiEV, in 2009, followed by the Outlander PHEV in 2013 — the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV.

With a goal of achieving 100% electrified vehicle sales by 2035, Mitsubishi says it will “deliver models that embody Mitsubishi Motors-ness and contribute to the realisation of a carbon-neutral society”.
