Hampton Downs confirmed as 2018 Asia Pacific 36 opener Hampton Downs and Australia GT owner Tony Quinn have confirmed that the Hampton Downs circuit will host the inaugural round of the Asia Pacific 36 series from 2018. The new 12-hour race at the circuit would join two other events of the same duration at Bathurst and Sepang, in a series for GT3 and GT4 machinery over the European winter of 2018/19. Hampton Downs will again host Australian GT in October, as the CAMS Australian Endurance Championship visits the venue for the Laser Plumbing & Electrical Hampton Downs 500. It caps off a busy year for the venue, which also plays host to top level New Zealand motorsport with the NZ Touring Cars series and the popular Toyota Racing Series. Source: nzmotorracing.co.nz
Fifteen year old wins CareVets for Toyota 86 Championship Pukekohe student Liam Lawson will be the CareVets Racing Team’s scholarship driver in the coming 2017-2018 Toyota 86 Championship. He will drive the series alongside CareVets’ 2016/17 scholarship winner and series rookie of the year Jack Milligan from Christchurch. Though he is just 15 years old, Lawson is a young man in a hurry. He is currently second overall in the Australian Formula 4 Championship with two rounds remaining and won the 2016/17 Formula 1600 championship earlier in the year. Still a student at Pukekohe High School, he stepped up from karting with a string of race, event and championship wins to his name and moved into Formula First in 2015.

Michels makes most of Australian opportunity Jordan Michels of Invercargill has made the most of his opportunity in a test drive of a Mygale Formula Ford race car in Australia. Michels received the chance to test at Winton Motor Raceway in Victoria recently after winning Class 1 of the 2016/2017 South Island F1600 Championship, thanks to an arrangement between the South Island Formula Ford Association and Mygale Cars in Australia. The outing took place in an Australian specification car that is fitted with a Duratec engine, more modern and more powerful than the Kent engine used in the New Zealand series. The Australian cars also use different tyres, giving more grip. Michels went to Australia with the intention of spending an additional day testing the Duratec powered Mygale at the Phillip Island circuit south of Melbourne. However, the Winton test went so well that Greg Woodrow, CEO of Mygale Australia, offered Jordan a test in his Porsche GT3 Cup Car. Michels sums it up well, “The opportunity to go over and test both cars was absolutely fantastic and I owe it all to my backers that have been with me since day one.”

The CareVets Racing Scholarship is unique in New Zealand motor racing, and in 2016/17 its drivers delivered the team the Toyota 86 Championship title for Christchurch driver Ryan Yardley, and also the Rookie of the Year win for that season’s scholarship driver Jack Milligan, also from Christchurch. Graves wins third Catlins Coast Rally
Top seed Andrew Graves, of Gore, along with codriver Jared Leebody, won his third Catlins Coast Rally with a commanding drive in his Mitsubishi EVO 3. Graves forged into the lead from the start, opening a good margin over second seed Jeff Judd, of Christchurch in a Subaru Impreza WRX. He continued to build the lead winning five Special Stages before Judd took the sixth and final stage. Sadly for the series, for the first time in almost ten years, the Supercar event at Pukekohe has not included V8 Utes in its line up but Ute series officials are still confident of a strong season ahead. The series, which remains a New Zealand motorsport championship, will reduce from six to four rounds. Following the ITM Supercar event at Pukekohe in November, the first round of the Speed Works Events promoted Premier Championship series moves onto the Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park in Taupo. The series will then run at the New Zealand Grand Prix meeting in February at Manfeild before moving to the Speed Works round at Hampton Downs. Holden’s first factory built 1969 HT Monaro GTS 350 prepared for the Holden Dealer Team (HDT) has fetched a record NZ$541,905 at auction.

What sets you apart from your competitors? We have never had to advertise, as our customers always seem to come back. We are very price focused, making sure we offer great value and great service. The proof is in how much word of mouth work we get and this is why we’ve grown steadily and strongly. How influential are points to your purchasing decisions? My wife loves the points so much that I don’t even get a chance to see them! She uses them whenever she wants to treat herself to something or wants to refresh the whiteware in the kitchen. They’re such dependable cars. Who taught you to drive? My wife taught me to drive when we were in South Korea. She passed her licence one day and started teaching me the next. Since then I have always driven.
