Allan Wakeling Panelbeaters & Spraypainters

Allan Wakeling Panelbeaters & Spraypainters is an Auckland based, family business that has been operating for over 40 years. Allan’s team, which includes his wife Jennifer and two sons, one a qualified panel beater and the other a qualified car painter, aims to ensure a high quality service that meets the customers needs every time. We spoke to Allan Wakeling about using genuine parts and why he has poured his heart and soul into the trade.

Do you have any plans for expansion in the near future?

Now that my sons are involved in the business, hopefully they can carry it on when I want to finish. As you get old the flexibility isn’t as good as it once was. We built these buildings back in 1991, so that was good foresight. Hopefully it’ll be a retirement thing for us, with some rent maybe.

What changes have you noticed in the industry?

It used to be so much simpler back in the day, now there’s more admin, I’m also seeing the job itself has changed. You used to have to be a panel beater but these days those that are coming into the industry are not really becoming panel beaters, they’re becoming parts fitter repairers. Paint technology has improved.

The new water based paints are better for the atmosphere, with less solvents, and the colours are outstanding, which makes a beautiful job.

What sets you apart from your competitors?

We are a solid family business that has good morals and ethics in business terms. We have a high standard of quality too. We don’t pump out 20 cars a day and the cars we do put out we put our heart and soul behind. It’s what we like to do and it’s what we’ve always done.

What is the secret of your success as a business?

Being loyal to our customers, hard working and clever in what we do.

It’s up to about half now - very little aftermarket at all. And it’s more than it used to be because new parts are getting even cheaper than recycled parts. If you get them secondhand you can’t be sure how many coats they’ve already had for instance.

One of the best things I’ve ever owned was a 12V Coleman pump used to pump up airbeds etc. We used it only this last holiday to pump up the biscuit for the kids and grandkids.

What is your dream car?

I’ve got them! A ‘57 Sports Coupe Chevrolet and a ‘69 Big Block Camaro. Both are like brand new.

Murphy’s new Holden revealed

Greg Murphy and Holden New Zealand have started the New Year with a special reveal of the motorsport legend’s latest adventure in the world of motorsport – a brand new Holden Barina developed specially for the New Zealand Rally Championship.

The reveal took place at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park in front of assembled media and supporters of the 20-year Holden driving veteran, together with Greg’s teammate Cantabrian Josh Marston, who will be driving a second Barina in the championship.

“I’ve enjoyed many victories here at Hampton Downs and would like to think a little of the same success might rub off on my new endeavour,” said four-time Bathurst champion, Greg Murphy, “I’ve been interested in rallying for a number of years, and the launch of the new-look model year 2017 Barina in Holden showrooms, complete with its new front fascia, grille and rear fascia, is the perfect time for me to get behind the wheel of the new car”.

Ellingham joins 2017 Carrera Cup grid

New Zealand sports car racer Simon Ellingham will contest the 2017 Porsche Carrera Cup Australia championship with reigning Teams Champion, McElrea Racing. The 24-year-old, a former Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge and Australian GT driver, will campaign the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, which was raced by Duvashen Padayachee for the past three Carrera Cup seasons.

“I’m eager to get the 2017 season underway; the Carrera Cup calendar is awesome and includes some of my favourite tracks, and I can’t wait to finally race at Bathurst. The Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is a sensational car and I’m with an outstanding team in McElrea Racing, so there’s a lot to be excited about for the coming season” said Ellingham.

Porsche Cars Australia Motorsport Manager, Kurt Sakzewski, responded to Ellingham’s announcement, “We’re excited to have Simon on board, with Carrera Cup, for the next stage in his racing career. Bosch targets EVs, hybrids with powertrain division Bosch is predicting that almost 20 million hybrids and electric vehicles will be produced in 2025. With this in mind, Bosch is setting up an operating unit for electro mobility.

The unit will be part of the new Powertrain Solutions division. From the start of 2018, this will include the company’s electro mobility activities as well as today’s Gasoline Systems and Diesel Systems divisions. In the future, Bosch says it will supply existing and new customers with all powertrain technologies from a single source.

Bosch predicts that in addition to the 20 million new hybrids and electric vehicles on the world’s roads in 2025, there will be some 85 million new gasoline and dieselpowered vehicles.

Rolf Bulander, chairman of the Bosch Mobility Solutions business sector and member of the board says the company will be prepared in both the fuel and electricity areas. “As it is still unclear which powertrain or which combination of the various types will dominate when, we are taking a two-pronged approach, and continuing to extend our expertise and knowledge in both electro mobility and combustion engines,” Bulander says.

Powertrain Solutions will focus on three core segments: passenger cars and trucks with combustion engines, hybrid powertrains, and electric vehicles.

“We see huge growth potential in electro mobility and commercial vehicles. When it comes to passenger cars with combustion engines, our main focus will be on improving efficiency,” Bulander adds.

Powertrain Solutions will bring together roughly 88,000 associates at more than 60 locations in 25 countries around the world. This collaboration will be intensified in the new division from 2018.

The plan is for the new division and its three units to start operations at the beginning of 2018.

Evans wins Manfeild weekend & Sam Barry claims maiden win in final Simon Evans won the fifth round of the BNT NZ Touring Car Championship, held at Manfeild in February. Evans claimed two wins and a second place over the weekend’s three races giving him enough points to claim the round honours.

Speedshow needs help to show the world what it can do The CRC Speedshow needs help from its fans to take the next big step. It has teamed up with PledgeMe to raise $350,000, which would be used to bring some of the industry’s biggest superstars to New Zealand, along with showcasing new cars and never-seen-before exhibits.

CRC Speedshow managing director Ross Prevette says the fundraising drive is an opportunity to make the show world class.

“We want to become the southern hemisphere’s SEMA [Speciality Equipment Market Association] show, which is entirely possible, if we can get this financial support.

“Quite simply, securing this funding through equity crowdfunding will make the show unquestionably epic.

Imagine the world’s biggest motoring and motorsport stars coming to New Zealand, in potentially their first and only public visit. It would be awesome!”

Prevette says he has had interest from international buyers because they can see the potential in the show, but says his team is determined to keep it locally owned and operated.

“That’s why we’re offering it to local investors through our crowdfunding campaign – firstly, to allow it to stay here but also showing the world how we Kiwis do it down here.”
