Factory-backed outing for the 911 GT3 R at the legendary Mount Panorama A Porsche 911 GT3 R driven by Porsche works drivers Earl Bamber (New Zealand), Kévin Estre (France) and Laurens Vanthoor (Belgium) tackled the Bathurst 12 Hour in Australia on 5 February. The 500 hp racecar mounted with the ultra-modern, four-litre, flax-six engine featuring direct fuel injection is campaigned by the Australian Walkinshaw GT3 squad with factorybacking from Porsche Motorsport. In addition, other customer teams field Porsche vehicles on the 6.213-kilometre Mount Panorama Circuit. The Bathurst 12 Hour is one of the most spectacular sports car races and marked the start of the international GT Challenge season.

The Mount Panorama Circuit, located in a picturesque region about three hours drive inland from Sydney, is a public road for most of the year. The challenging racetrack in the foothills of the Blue Mountains features 23 corners with a 174-metre vertical difference between the highest and lowest point. The steepest grade is 16 percent. One of the peculiarities of the world famous 12-hour classic in the state of New South Wales is that the start takes place in the dark at 5.45 in the morning.

The 911 GT3 R was designed by Porsche for worldwide GT3 series on the basis of the 911 GT3 RS production sports car. The vehicle is characterised by uncompromising lightweight design, better aerodynamic efficiency, lower fuel consumption and improved driveability. Already in its 2016 maiden season, the 911 GT3R celebrated many successes in international racing series, for example in the IMSA SportsCar Championship, the World Challenge, the ADAC GT Masters as well as the VLN Long Distance Championship Nürburgring on the demanding Nordschleife.

Ellingham joins 2017 Carrera Cup grid New Zealand sports car racer Simon Ellingham will contest the 2017 Porsche Carrera Cup Australia championship with reigning Teams Champion, McElrea Racing. The 24-year-old, a former Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge and Australian GT driver, will campaign the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car raced by Duvashen Padayachee for the past three Carrera Cup seasons.

Ellingham, a former New Zealand Endurance Series champion, tested his new race-bred 911 at Queensland Raceway in December.

“I’m eager to get the 2017 season underway; the Carrera Cup calendar is awesome and includes some of my favourite tracks… and I can’t wait to finally

race at Bathurst. The Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is a sensational car and I’m with an outstanding team in McElrea Racing, so there’s a lot to be excited about for the coming season,” said Ellingham.

New Supercars Jordan Love to receive Jamey for 2017 Blaikie Scholarship championship Up to ten new chassis are currently under construction in time for the opening of the 2017 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, with reigning champions Triple Eight Race Engineering building three of them. The Clipsal 500 opens the 2017 season in March and the Queensland-based squad is building the new chassis in the wake of recent sales to Dunlop Series teams and a collector that has left the Roland Dane-led squad light on chassis inventory. All three drivers (van Gisbergen, Whincup and Lowndes) will start the championship in new cars, while Whincup’s 2016 race car will become the ‘spare’.

Ford runners Prodrive Racing Australia (PRA) and DJR Team Penske will each have a new Falcon FG X on the grid for the start of 2017, the new car at PRA taking its active fleet to eight racecars.

Nissan Motorsport will have two brand new Altimas on the grid to start 2017, the first time it has produced multiple new chassis for a season since the beginning of New Generation regulations nearly four years ago.

Garry Rogers Motorsport has already confirmed it’s building two new Commodore chassis for 2017, however has already publically stated they are slated for use in the Dunlop Series given the two VF Commodores it ran this year (originally built by GRM) were leased from Dragon’s Tony Klein and are headed to Image Racing for 2017.

After using a pair of Walkinshawsourced Commodores this year, Erebus Motorsport V8 has plans to build a new car for David Reynolds for 2017 in-house with the Clipsal 500 its planned debut.

West Australian Jordan Love has been selected as the 2017 recipient of the Jamey Blaikie Scholarship as he prepares to contest the coming season of Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia presented by Pirelli. The 17-year-old progressed from karting into a successful open wheel-racing career, in which he was crowned the 2015 Asia Cup Series champion before placing third in this year’s Australian Formula 4 Championship.

Randle to drive in British LMP3 Cup Championship Australian driver Thomas Randle will partner Mike Newbould in a Ligier JS P3 LMP3 car run by Douglas Motorsport in the six round 2017 British LMP3 Cup Championship. The team ran Randle in the British Formula 3 Championship last season, winning two races, scoring five other podiums and finishing fourth overall.

Randle is first competing in the 2017 Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand for the second season having previously competed in 2015. He won the Australian Formula Ford title in 2014 with five wins and seven other podium places in 18 races after a career in karts. The now 20-year-old Melbourne driver finished runner-up in the Australian Formula Four Championship in 2015, with seven wins and another eight podiums in the 21 races. He also spent 2015 competing in Australia’s National Sports Sedans Series where he finished third in a five round, 15 race series, winning twice and scoring eight other podiums.

Nissan announces first on-road autonomous vehicle tests in Europe Nissan will bring real-world demonstrations of autonomous driving cars to Britain next month. Showcasing next-generation technology through the world’s best-selling electric vehicle, the on-road demonstrations will take place in London, enabling the vehicles and their passengers to cover a diverse city environment.

Passengers, including government officials and technical and safety experts, will be given the opportunity to experience and test the technology in a live environment in a modified Nissan LEAF. These will be the first demonstrations of Nissan’s autonomous drive technology on public roads in Europe, representing the next step in Nissan’s Intelligent Mobility blueprint for transforming how cars are driven, powered, and integrated into wider society.

500,000 fake car parts headed to Australia seized in Middle East Thousands of fake and counterfeit car parts seized in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in January were likely to have been destined for Australia, says investigators.

Half a million fake car parts with a value of over AUD$5.4 million were raid in Abu Dhabi’s Al Ain city with 21 truckloads of parts being destroyed.

The successful raid was the result of a collaborative investigation by the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED) and automotive trademark owners. The fake parts emulated and bore the trademarks of 15 different automotive marques.

FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said the seizure brought home the scale of the international counterfeit car parts problem.

“Investigators tell us there is a good chance that thousands of these inferior, illegal and dangerous parts were on their way to being fitted to Australian cars,” Mr Weber said.

“We have demonstrated the manufacturing inferiority and danger of counterfeit parts and this black market is risking the safety of drivers, passengers and pedestrians.”

“Counterfeiters are more sophisticated than ever. These inferior copies are so close in appearance to the originals that even professionals can have difficulty telling them apart until they test their actual performance. The only way for consumers to ensure they are getting genuine OEM parts is to purchase spare parts and accessories from the authorised genuine part dealers and dealerships.”

Supercar drivers on the grid for Bathurst 12 Hour The 2017 Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour has attracted a number of top Supercar drivers for this years’ edition with the last three series Champions – Shane van Gisbergen, Mark Winterbottom and Jamie Whincup – committing. They join fellow Supercar drivers Garth Tander, Lee Holdsworth, Chaz Mostert and Craig Lowndes on the entry list.

Four-time Great Race champion Steven Richards will be joined by his 2013 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 winning teammate Mark Winterbottom in a factory-backed BMW M6 GT3. They will team up with double DTM (German Touring Car) Champion Marco Wittmann.

Chaz Mostert will drive for Queensland squad MARC GT, in a BMW M6 GT3 alongside Mackay-based racer Morgan Haber and three-time Porsche Carrera Cup Australia Challenge winner Max Twigg.

Tander made his debut in the 12 Hour last year, finishing eighth overall. 2017 sees him drive one of two Jamec-Pem Racing Audi R8’s with double race winner Christoper Mies and his fellow factory Audi pilot Christoper Haase.

More current Supercars drivers are expected to be confirmed with Nissan Motorsport yet to announce their driving squad. Nissan will field two Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3s in the 12-hour for the first time.

Lee Holdsworth will also race an Audi R8 LMS alongside Pirtek Enduro Cup regular Dean Fiore and Porsche Carrera Cup Australia expert, Marc Cini. Holdsworth previously campaigned a Mercedes Benz SLS AMG for Erebus Motorsport in 2013 finishing sixth overall.

Van Gisbergen took victory in the 2016 Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 hour with then-McLaren teammates Alvaro Parent and Jonathon Webb. However this year sees him move from the British brand to Mercedes-Benz for 2017. He will team up with fellow countryman and previous 12 Hour winner Craig Baird. Joining them is factory AMG driver Maro Engel in a Scott Taylor Motorsport AMG GT3.

Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup will pilot a Ferrari 488 GT3 entry, alongside returning factory driver Toni Vilander.

The 12-hour will mark Whincup’s GT debut while Lowndes is a former winner of the event – helping Ferrari to their first Bathurst triumph in 2014.

Dowel Jnr to join Rallycross Academy in Finland Sixteen-year old Melbourne student, Troy Dowel, has been accepted into the prestigious Rallycross Academy in Finland.

The eldest son of former Australian Rally Champion, Justin Dowel, Troy will contest five rounds of the 2017 Finnish Rallycross Championship at the wheel of a Renault Clio Cup RX car. Dowel has had some rallycross experience, having contested four events in Australia in 2016 at the wheel of a Volkswagen Polo S2000, but is unsure of what the competition has in store for him in 2017.

Throughout 2016 he underwent rally driver training from Brendan Reeves and Will Orders, and is excited with the opportunities that lie ahead.

“Rallycross in Australia is still in its very early stages, but with the rally testing program I have had, on top of the four events this year (2016) in a Polo S2000 rally car and a number of Autocross events, I hope to be competitive,” he said.

The championship will use identical Renault Clio Cup RX cars, based on Renault’s latest Clio Cup racers, with participants also receiving mental, physical, PR and driver training. The Clio Cup RX cars are powered by a 1.6-litre turbo-charged, 220bhp engine with a six-speed sequential gearbox. Drivers will be mentored by World RX race winners Andreas Bakkerud, Reinis Nitiss and Toomas Heikkinen, and only competitors aged 24 years-old and younger can win the prize drive. The first round takes place at Hyvinkää in Finland, in May 2017.

Campbell to join Van Gisbergen for PIRTEK Enduro Cup Porsche Carrera Cup champion Matt Campbell will join Shane van Gisbergen as co-driver in the Red Bull Holden Racing Team No. 97 Holden Commodore VF for 2017.

Campbell made his Supercars debut last year at the three endurance events and impressed the field. Now tearing up with reigning Supercars champion van Gisbergen, he will be taking on the PIRTEK Enduro Cup with the six-time Bathurst 1000-winning outfit.

Red Bull Holden Racing Team Managing Director Roland Dane reckons the 21-year-old ticks all the boxes when it comes to co-driving with van Gisbergen.

“We’ve been watching Matt for a while now and have been super impressed by his speed and maturity driving a range of different cars,” said Dane.

“The chance to have such a great young talent driving with us this year was too tempting to pass up. Plus he was Shane’s number one choice to share his Red Bull Holden Racing Team Commodore. We try to give our drivers what they ask for.”

After a stellar first year with the team, van Gisbergen is looking to continue his momentum into 2017, already with his eyes fixed on bringing home the PIRTEK Enduro Cup for the second year in a row with Campbell by his side.

Ahead of his Supercars co-driving duties, Campbell has been busy preparing for his first season competing in the Porsche SuperCup in Europe.

“It’s been quite a busy off-season readying myself for my first season racing outside Australia, keeping up my training for a big year ahead.”

Campbell will co-drive van Gisbergen’s Holden Commodore VF at the Sandown 500, Bathurst 1000 and Gold Coast 600 for 2017.
