Since delivering the first cars to customers in early 2020, GR Supra GT4 customers took part in more than 250 races, delivering 36 class wins and 78 podiums, with teams demonstrating impressive performances and results from the beginning In parallel, the GR Supra GT4 owners’ community has grown too, reaching the 50-cars milestone at the end of 2021 as owners across the world join the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing family. To mark the occasion of the 50th car, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing has created a GR Supra GT4 50 Edition, complete with unique branding and inclusive option parts, delivering substantial added value for the standard sales price of €175,000 (plus applicable taxes and delivery).

Only six examples will be produced, two each for Asia, Europe and North America, giving the cars a special place in TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s customer racing

programme – and ensuring the 50 Edition vehicles will stand out in any paddock or private collection.

Performance on track comes as standard with any GR Supra GT4, as shown by its front-running performances in the European, French, British and Scandinavian GT4 championships, the DTM Trophy as well as class success in Japanese domestic racing. Evans confirmed as Porsche Driver for 2022 and beyond 2018 Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Australia Champion Jaxon Evans has inked a new multi-year contract as a ‘Porsche Driver’ that will see him race internationally for the marque in 2022 and beyond. The Kiwi-born racer competed for two years on the Formula 1 support bill as a Porsche Junior driver in the Porsche Mobil1™ Supercup and won the Rookie Championship in Carrera Cup Deutschland in 2019. He then went on to win the Carrera Cup France Championship in 2020 before finishing third in the FIA World Endurance Championship (GTE-AM) and runner up in the Porsche Mobil1™ Supercup.

4

While COVID-19 impacted his 2021 racing season, Evans says that he has continued to race and grow as a professional driver and is confident about the year ahead. “I’m really proud to re-join the Porsche family for 2022 and beyond. I feel like I have developed further as a person and driver – both on and off the track – since my time with them as a Porsche Junior,” said Evans. In 2022, Evans will compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship, driving the Porsche 911 RSR. He’ll also contest selected races of the NLS Nürburgring Endurance Series racing in the Porsche GT3R. Coulthard and Luff locked in for Bathurst 1000 Walkinshaw Andretti United has announced its 2022 Bathurst 1000 line up, with Fabian Coulthard and Warren Luff confirmed as co-drivers for The Great Race. In a major coup, Coulthard joins the Team after 471 Supercars race starts, which has included 13 race wins, nine pole positions and 60 podiums. He also has 18 Bathurst 1000 starts to his name. Coulthard competed full time in the Supercars Championship from 2008, which included two years at Walkinshaw Racing in 2010 and 2011.

Luff re-joins the team for his ninth consecutive

season, fresh off the back of his top-five Bathurst finish alongside Bryce Fullwood in 2021.

Since joining the team in 2014, Luff has won the 2015 Enduro Cup, the 2016 Sandown 500 and has stood on the podium seven times, four of which at Bathurst. Over his career, he has six Bathurst 1000 podiums to his name from his 21 starts.

Just who Coulthard and Luff will pair with, either Nick Percat in the Mobil 1 NTI Racing No. 2, or Chaz Mostert in the Mobil 1 Optus Racing No. 25, will be confirmed closer to the Bathurst 1000. Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

Dale Wood joins Earl Bamber Motorsport for 2022 Carrera Cup Australia Championship Dale Wood will join forces with Earl Bamber Motorsport (EBM) for the upcoming Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Australia season which will see the squad add a third car to their line-up. The new partnership came about during this past off season after taking note of EBM’s entry into the Australian motorsport scene at the beginning of 2021, Dale explained. Wood is set to enter his fifth Carrera Cup Australia campaign alongside Callum Hedge and Ryan Suhle who will both be in their maiden Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Australia Championship season. Team Owner, Earl Bamber, is looking forward to the added strength Wood brings to EBM for this season.

“We are super excited to have Dale Wood join

EBM. He brings a lot of professionalism through

his background not only in Carrera Cup but also in Supercars.

He really is a welcome addition to the team. To be able to field three Pro cars in 2022 is going to be a challenge for us,

but I think it will also bring us a lot of understanding as it will help us learn more about the new car when we get to go racing.”

John Bowe unveils new look, support for 2022 TCM season SIX-TIME GULF WESTERN OIL Touring Car Masters champion John Bowe has announced new backers and shown off a brand-new look for his Holden Torana as he searches for title number seven in 2022. Bowe has confirmed that long-time supporters Rare Spares have increased their support to become the joint namingrights partner of his program, alongside existing backers Paynter Dixon and PAYCE. All three have been long-term supporters of Bowe’s racing, especially in the Touring Car Masters era. Bowe now has more TCM race and round starts in his Torana than completed in his iconic Ford Mustang, with 2022 representing the eighth season he will have raced the car. 34 of his record 100 TCM race wins have come aboard the Torana, prepared by Bendigo Retro Muscle Cars.

“I would also like to acknowledge Gary O’Brien from Bendigo Retro Muscle cars and his dedicated team who not only built the Torana A9X in the first place but have continued to prepare it and run it to 3 championship wins in its 5 years of competition,” Bowe added. “They are a fantastic group of racing people.”

INDUSTRY NEWS

Ford announces specs for new generation Ranger Ford Australia has confirmed more details about the forthcoming new generation Ranger, including power and torque figures. Local pricing for the line-up is still to be confirmed. The Ranger’s new Power Stroke 3.0-litre V6 diesel, which will feature in the Sport and Wildtrak, is set to produce 184kW of power and 600Nm of torque. A healthy step up from the former flagship bi-turbo 2.0-litre’s 157kW/500Nm. Ford has also confirmed the power outputs for its other engines; the revised bi-turbo 2.0-litre and the entry-level single-turbo 2.0-litre. The former drops a few kilowatts, now rated at 154kW/500Nm. The latter, meanwhile, is rated at 125kW/405Nm. The Wildtrak will be available with either the 2.0-litre bi-turbo or the 3.0-litre V6 diesel.

“We’re offering [the 3.0-litre engine] specifically because some customers told us they wanted more power and torque for towing and extreme off-roading,” says Maharaj.

“We did a lot of application calibration and validation work in both the US and Australia to make sure

it would meet the needs of Ranger and Everest customers.

“The 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel delivers. When you drive a Ranger with the V6 turbodiesel, it feels like a much bigger truck. And it feels strong in the sense that it’s got plenty of power and torque, which is exactly what our customers told us they wanted.” Source: autotalk.com.au

The now confirmed engine trio complement the Ranger Raptor’s flagship 3.0-litre twin-turbo EcoBoost petrol V6, making 292kW and 583Nm. A touch less torque than the 3.0-litre diesel, which Ranger and Everest program manager Pritika Maharaj says is going to be a towing master. Interestingly, in spite of the 100Nm bump in torque, the Ranger’s towing rating hasn’t changed. Even with the 600Nm 3.0-litre selected, most models are still rated to tow 3500kg braked. The Raptor is the exception, being rated to tow 2500kg braked.

Marcos Ambrose and George Miedecke to tackle Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour A RACING relationship will be rekindled when Marcos Ambrose and George Miedecke team up to tackle the 2022 Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour this Easter. They will join forces to contest the Bathurst 6 Hour Production Car race this April 15-17, driving a brand-new Ford Mustang GT prepared by Garry Rogers Motorsport. Miedecke raced for Ambrose’s team in the United States, while Ambrose was competing in the top level of NASCAR Racing, for several successful seasons with the two families remaining close since. Ambrose currently works as GRMs competition director, heading up their young driver program and working with the team’s rising stars across their Supercheap Auto TCR Australia, S5000 and Turtle Wax TransAm stables.

The 2022 Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour will represent a competitive, if one-off, racing return for Ambrose, who has not competed since his final Supercars race start and subsequent retirement in 2015. After famously clinching a pair of Supercars Championship titles with Stone Brothers Racing in 2003 and 2004, Ambrose

WHAT IS SEPSIS? Maddy Jones was an 18-year-old Honours Law student in the prime of her life. She was intelligent, beautiful, very independent, wickedly funny, sarcastic, and sometimes irreverent. Maddy's death was preventable.

Sepsis is a life-threatening infection that may look like the flu or gastro and start with any infection such as chest, throat, skin or urinary tract.

V E G E P O D G R O W H E A LT H A personal Nature based therapy for mental wellbeing sent FREE with every purchase After years of boots-on-the-ground installs and community projects, it became very obvious to us that many people do not have easy access to nature-based therapy in its traditional large scale format (ie: think immersion in forests, walking along beaches or resting oneself on large and safe riverbanks); and yet Vegepods and their ‘mini eco-systems’ were enabling nature-based therapy.

Who can use Vegepod GrowHealth? Vegepod GrowHealth is not only designed to guide healthcare workers in various clinical or group settings, but can also be utilised by anyone by themselves directly. Many carers and frontline workers are also finding these activities as key tools for respite and meeting the growing needs for ‘Caring for Carers’. Vegepod GrowHealth can be freely facilitated by anyone, including: • Anyone in their own personal backyard/Vegepod • Private practice • NDIS – psychosocial recovery coach • Psychologists, psychotherapists, counsellors and mental wellbeing clinicians • Social workers, occupational therapists and allied health professionals • Youth workers, drug and alcohol clinicians and disability support workers • School wellbeing counsellors, university wellbeing counsellors and outreach workers • Workplace wellbeing officers • Carers and family members

Australian Government mandates AEB and ESC in heavy commercials The Australian Government has mandated two life-saving vehicle technologies for new heavy vehicles –advanced emergency braking (AEB) and electronic stability control (ESC). It says AEB and ESC systems must be installed from November 1, 2023 for all new models of heavy vehicles. For existing models already in circulation, these systems must be installed in new buses from November 1, 2024, and new goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes from February 1, 2025. “These new requirements for AEB and ESC systems have been harmonised with established international standards, ensuring the safest vehicles are made available to Australian operators at the lowest cost,” assistant minister to the deputy prime minister Kevin Hogan says. “The phased introduction of these life-saving systems will give our heavy vehicle sector, including manufacturers, the time needed to effectively make the transition,” he says. The Government says AEB systems detect likely forward collisions, provide the driver with a warning and, if the driver does not respond, apply the brakes automatically. According to the Government, ESC systems detect the risk of a rollover and automatically decelerate the vehicle in response. They can also detect when a vehicle diverges from the driver’s intended course, and take corrective action to bring the vehicle back on track. These new standards will apply to all categories of heavy vehicles, from buses and coaches through to heavy goods trucks. Hogan says mandating both technologies will help save lives and prevent injuries on the nation’s roads.

“Vehicle technology has an important role to play

in saving lives and livelihoods on our roads, which

is why we have introduced new standards requiring

AEB and ESC systems to be installed in all new heavy vehicles.

22

“Mandating this technology for heavy vehicles is expected to save around 100 lives and avoid more than 2300 serious injuries over 40 years. “As well as saving lives and giving more peace of mind to our heavy vehicle operators and their families, the new standards are expected to return a net benefit of around $140 million to the Australian economy.”

“These technologies would have significant benefits for the heavy vehicle sector, from bus operators through to those driving the biggest trucks.

“Crashes involving heavy vehicles can be particularly severe due to the size, loads and trips these types of vehicles are taking, having a devastating effect on the individuals and families involved,” Hogan says. “Our heavy vehicle operators work hard to keep our economy and nation running by getting produce to plates and goods to markets, and the Australian Government is committed to doing our part to help keep them safe on our roads. “We have listened and we have acted on the calls by road safety advocates, the states and territories, and Australians directly affected by these types of heavy vehicle crashes, to mandate this technology to prevent tragic outcomes. “ESC systems for heavy vehicles are estimated to reduce loss of control and rollover crashes by up to 30%, with AEB systems expected to reduce crashes involving a heavy vehicle impacting the rear of another vehicle by up to 57%. “AEB technology will be particularly impactful for our nation’s articulated vehicles, which see around 70% of fatalities and just under half of the serious injuries from crashes involving heavy vehicles striking the rear of another vehicle,” Hogan says. The final Regulation Impact Statement, new Australian Design Rules and Explanatory Statements are available at www. legislation.gov.au/Details/F2022L00211/Download (AEB systems), and www.legislation.gov.au/Details/F2022L00213/ Download (ESC systems). ANCAP safety ratings to expire this year for Australian best sellers A selection of new vehicles, including some of the best-selling nameplates in Australia, are set to lose their coveted five star ANCAP safety rating this year. The move will apply for any vehicle with a rating that’s six-yearsold or older. This follows the introduction of numerous rounds of changes to the Australian New Car Assessment Programme’s ratings system over the last decade, each more stringent than the last.

For some models losing their rating, looming updates mean there’s little harm. Out of those listed above, the Ranger, Everest, HR-V, and Amarok are all set to be replaced with new models in the coming years (in the case of the Ranger and Everest, coming months). The question becomes more complicated for a vehicle like the Nissan Navara, for example. The updated Narava was launched on both sides of the ditch last year and is likely to continue to be sold in its existing state for at least two years.

Those to lose their five star rating include vehicles well known for appearing in the country’s monthly best-seller data, including Nissan must now evaluate whether it wants to get the Navara evaluated to see if it can perform well according to ANCAP’s the Ford Ranger, Mitsubishi Triton, Mitsubishi ASX, and Nissan current testing regime. Navara. Other models impacted include the Mazda2, Mazda CX-3, Ford Everest, Volkswagen Amarok, Toyota Prado, Ford Everest, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Suzuki Vitara, and Honda HR-V. While each of these models has been awarded a five star rating from ANCAP in the past, it’s likely that some of them would be able to achieve the same result in 2022, given the increased difficulty of the testing regime.

The decision to give all ANCAP ratings a six-year period of relevance before having them expire was first proposed in 2021. It came following complaints from manufacturers that ANCAP results were confusing to consumers, particularly when two cars could both be seen as ‘five star cars’; even though one might have passed a much more stringent set of tests than the other. Source: autotalk.com.au

The decision is unlikely to impact whether any of the aforementioned models continue to be offered for sale locally or not.

Subaru support for Max McRae’s Australian title tilt Max McRae will compete in the 2022 Australian Rally Championship (ARC) driving a Maximum Motorsport-prepared Subaru Impreza WRX STI on the nationwide ARC and his more local Rally WA (Western Australia) series. “I did a couple of rallies in the Subaru this season and it was special,” commented Max McRae. “Everybody knows this is the brand my Uncle Colin kind of made his own when he won the world championship in an Impreza 555 in 1995. Subaru is also really close to my Dad’s heart, he competed in the world championship with RED and Subaru and my Gramps has done the same.

“In so many parts of the world, rallying is all about Subaru and Subaru is all about rallying – I think that’s true here in Australia. So the chance to follow in the family tradition is fantastic.

“And, let’s be honest, the STI just rocks. Soon as you turn the key, you start smiling. I loved driving it this year, we set fastest times on both the Winvale Park Stages and the Experts Cup and I can’t wait to go back to those WA rounds next season. The speed we were able to show on those Rally WA rounds, I think we have to be looking for a shot at the title.”

“As well as the Australian events, we’re really keen to get back to the UK for some rallies as well. We’re waiting on confirmation of international travel, but once we get the green light we’re going to start pushing forward with the logistics on that side of things.” Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

The graduation from two-wheel to four-wheel drive is something Max’s father Alister is keen to make happen.

“We’ve been running the [Ford] Fiesta Rally4 this

season,” said Alister, “and there’s no doubt that’s a great car...

Max has learned loads from competing in it, but I think this is a good time to make the progression. He’s done some testing and competed in both the Subaru and a Peugeot AP4 car this year and he’s made really good steps.” Celebrating

Craig Lowndes V8 Supercar set for big auction price A Ford Falcon BF V8 Supercar driven by one of Australia’s most popular race car drivers is set to fetch well into six figures when its auction closes in four days’ time. The 2008 Triple Eight Vodafone Falcon driven by Craig Lowndes was listed online by Lloyds Auctions. Bidding currently sits at AU$135,000 with four days and 13 hours remaining. The day-glo red Falcon was driven by Lowndes during one of his most prosperous eras in the sport. He and teammate Jamie Whincup won the Bathurst 1000 three times in a row during this era, and Lowndes was a championship contender and regular race winner each season. This particular car is not the one that won Bathurst, but rather is chassis number 888A-12A, the race team’s 13th chassis. Lowndes won a race at Sandown with the chassis, while also claiming podium finishes at Bahrain, Symmons Plains, and Oran Park. Since running in the Supercars main game, 888A-12A has been frequent fixture in the Super2 and Super3 feeder categories. Current Tickford Racing co-driver James Moffat and lead drivers Jake Kostecki and Thomas Randle are among its former drivers.

“It’s not every day you get to own a Supercar driven by

one of the sport’s most respected and iconic names. We have had enquiry from all over the country, both from

Holden and Ford fans,” says Lee Hames, chief operations at Lloyds Auctions.

The car was restored to its original livery in 2020 ahead of its sale in 2022. Its auction is timed to finish during Lloyds Auctions’ ‘Grand Carmada’ weekend event, where more than 500 high-profile listings are set to close. These include another V8 Supercar; the 2000 Larry Perkins Engineering Castrol Holden VT Commodore formerly driven by Russell Ingall.

“We have sold many iconic race cars in recent months. We sold Walkinshaw Andretti United’s [2021 Bathurst] winning supercar back in September, which sold for $600k under the hammer, so we won’t be surprised if Craig Lowndes’ car breaks the next motor racing record.

Kia recalling 40,000 cars over airbag fault

Kia Australia is recalling 40,817 vehicles manufactured between 2016 and 2018 for a potential airbag fault which can be rectified by the dealer network at no charge to the owner. The affected vehicles include the Kia Carnival, Kia Cerato and Kia Soul and the remedy may be as simple as replacing a control unit or performing a software update says the company. It says due to a manufacturing issue, the Airbag Control Unit (ACU) cover and the Electronically Erasable Programming Read-Only Memory (EEPROM) chip may have been produced with insufficient clearance. This could cause the airbag warning lights to illuminate and the airbags may not deploy says Kia. In the event of

an accident an airbag not deploying as intended could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users. However, if the Airbag Warning Light is illuminated, and Fault Code B162000 is stored, the dealer will replace the ACU with an improved unit says Kia. If the Airbag Warning Light is not illuminated, Kia says a software update will be performed to the ACU ensuring deployment of the Airbag(s) in the event of an accident. It says owners can contact their nearest Kia Australia dealer to arrange for an inspection and repair of the vehicle, free of charge. Source: autotalk.com.au

FCAI welcomes hydrogen transport funding About $20 million in funding to build Australia’s first renewable hydrogen refuelling station network has been welcomed by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI). Chief executive Tony Weber says the project, jointly funded by the Victorian, NSW and Queensland governments, is an important step in preparing Australia’s eastern transport networks for a zero-emissions future. “While this announcement is initially aimed at the trucking industry, it is a historic first step in preparing the broader transport sector for large-scale renewable hydrogen use. It is great to see three state governments behind this program.” Strong potential exists for this fuel source to eventually be costcompetitive with diesel, which the FCAI notes currently powers around one-third of Australia’s new vehicles. “To prepare Australia for a zero-emissions transport future, more infrastructure investment such as this hydrogen project and leadership from governments at all levels will be needed,” Weber adds. Meanwhile, a report finds that Australia needs to electrify its national vehicle fleet to meet the country’s CO2 emissions reduction targets and reach net-zero by 2050.

“Considering that transport emissions account for 19% of the total, of which road freight comprises 38%, action taken in the next two decades to

transition to electric trucks will have a significant impact on success,” it says.

“Trucks also consume 23% of all road transport fuel – despite only travelling 8% of all road vehicle kilometres and comprising 4% of the entire Australian road vehicle fleet,” the report explains, adding that a truck’s average age in Australia is between 10-15 years and that 70% of truck operators own only a single vehicle. The goal is 30% new electric truck sales by 2030 and 100% by 2040, the report suggesting subsidies and incentives

30

are required to make the transition, especially as the upfront purchase price of an e-truck is almost double its diesel equivalent. “Trucks are the lifeblood of freight in Australia,” the report adds, suggesting e-trucks could reduce air pollution and associated health concerns, create new employment opportunities, encourage sustainable transport solutions, reduce transport costs and therefore the cost of goods for consumers and businesses, ensure energy security, and contribute to the national commitment for net-zero carbon emissions. Australia uses about 500,000 rigid trucks and 100,000 articulated trucks. Diesel fuel is the most significant cost for a trucking operator, on average representing 20% of short-haul operator costs and 35% of long-haul operator costs with any volatility inflating costs which must be passed on to business and consumers, the report says. As e-trucks are quieter, it means they can be used later at night and avoid urban or suburban “truck curfews” – policies introduced to curb noise pollution, which also have a flow-on effect for commuters as it would reduce peak hour traffic and congestion. “With all environmental and health benefits combined, it’s estimated that an electrification of both articulated and rigid trucks could save the Australian consumer $324.8 billion by 2050.” A reduction of moving parts for e-trucks also means maintenance cost reductions. Looking at a 22-tonne truck covering 300km without freight, the cost in diesel at current prices (March 24) would be $189.61, while the cost of powering an e-truck would be between $14$42, based on off-peak tariffs for a depot-based fleet, saving 77.8%, the report notes. The ATA says the government should provide a one tonne concession for e-trucks, taking the battery weight into consideration and that widths should be increased to align with the standard width used by major supplier economies.

Natural disasters and your mental health People may be at risk of developing anxiety or depression after experiencing a traumatic event or a natural disaster like a bushfire, flood, cyclone or earthquake.

It’s common for communities and individuals affected by a disaster to experience a range of thoughts, feelings and behaviours that can be intense, confusing and frightening. Fear, for example, is an important and normal reaction that helps activate our body and mind to make decisions to protect our own life and the lives of loved ones. It’s important to know the difference between a common reaction to a stressful or traumatic event and signs that indicate you should seek more support.
