Andretti Autosport confirms Indy Lights drive for Hunter McElrea Andretti Autosport have announced that Kiwi driver Hunter McElrea will make the step up to the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires Championship for the 2022 season. McElrea joins the championship-winning team following a third-place finish in the 2021 Indy Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires. McElrea first entered the Road to Indy in 2019 after winning the Road to Indy $200k Shootout that granted the 21-year-old a scholarship to join the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship. In his rookie campaign, McElrea captured four victories, five pole positions and stood on the podium 12 times finishing only five points away from winning the 2019 USF2000 Championship. As he moved up the Road to Indy ladder, McElrea joined the Indy Pro 2000 Championship collecting four wins, 13 podiums and starting from the pole position five times in his two seasons.

“It is a dream come true for me to join a team like

Andretti Autosport,” said McElrea. “After my first days in an Indy Lights car and working with the team, it’s clear to me why they are one of the world’s most successful race teams.

For the 2022 season, McElrea will pilot the No. 27 Dallara joining previously announced teammate, Sting Ray Robb [No. 2 Dallara].

Prior to joining the Road to Indy, McElrea competed in Formula Ford Championships across Australia and won the Australian Formula Ford Championship in 2018.

Huge entry for Bathhurst 6 Hour The 2022 Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour will likely be the largest endurance race in the more than 80-year history of the iconic Mount Panorama circuit in Bathurst. An astonishing 84 entries have now been officially lodged with event organisers for the 15-17 April ‘Showroom Showdown’ next year. The entry currently exceeds by 14 the race’s grid density of 70 cars, with early bird entries not due to close until November 30 and official entries still able to be lodged until March 11 next year. The remarkable interest from Production Car competitors from around the country has seen organisers activate regulation 1.7.4 in the Motorsport Australia Bathurst 6 Hour Sporting Regulations, which states: If full grid capacity is reached prior to the Entry Closing Date,

the Bathurst 6 Hour Administrator reserves the right to accept those valid entries which it deems most suitable. Event organisers at the Australian Racing Group (ARG) have put in place an internal process which will ensure the best possible outcomes for each class and the overall race itself. Those who miss out on a guaranteed spot in the race will be offered a full refund, or the option to be kept on a standby list until closer to the race in April next year. The Bathurst 6 Hour currently already owns the Mount Panorama record for the largest ever grid for an endurance race at the world-renowned circuit, set at 64 cars in 2017. ARG received 68 entries for the 2020 Bathurst 6 Hour race, which was ultimately cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while 60 cars took to the track at Easter this year. As well as making their competitive debut on November at the Sydney Motorsport Park with the five cylinder, all-wheel-drive coupe, the team has also confirmed that existing backers Burson Auto Parts will return to support their program on the Mountain in 2022. The company backed the team’s VW Golf entry in the race this year, Ben and Jude Bargwanna combining to finish second in class – after leading a chunk of the

The automotive parts retailer also supports the Bargwanna’s TCR Australia program with former Bathurst winner Jason Bargwanna and Ben sharing the driving duties in a pair of Peugeot 308 TCR entries. The 2022 Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour will see the Bargwanna team line up against what is expected to be a full field of Productionbased vehicles in Australia’s ‘showroom showdown’ enduro. Oscar Piastri confirmed as 2022 Alpine F1 reserve driver 2020 FIA Formula 3 champion and current F2 driver, Oscar Piastri, has been confirmed as Alpine F1 Team’s official reserve driver from 2022. The Australian Alpine Academy driver, who is currently leading the FIA Formula 2 Championship, will look to have an opportunity to replace Fernando Alonso who is signed by the team until the end of 2022 while Alonso’s team mate, Esteban Ocon has re-signed to a three-year deal.

“I’m super excited to be joining Alpine F1 Team as reserve driver,” said Piastri. “I’m looking forward to being much more involved with the team and

contributing to its intended success next season. “The reserve driver role is the next step towards my aim for a race seat in 2023, which is very exciting. I’ve proved myself in the junior formulas over the last couple of years and feel like I’m ready for Formula 1 now; along with the trackside experience at race weekends, we will put together a substantial

test programme in order to keep developing myself to grow even more prepared for a race seat. “I’m very thankful to Alpine for their support. We’ve enjoyed two very successful seasons together in the Academy and I’m grateful for the faith they’ve put in me for this next step with an eye on a bigger future. “Oscar’s graduation highlights the success of our Alpine Academy and underlines its strength as one of the best young driver programmes in motorsport. We look forward to seeing our young talents continue to blossom through the years to come.” Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

Carrera Cup Australia locks in capacity grid ahead of 2022 season start The 2022 Carrera Cup Australia season looks set to be the largest in the 18-year history of the Championship following the confirmation from Porsche Cars Australia (PCA) that all 32 x 992 generation Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars destined for the local market have already been sold and shipped.

where lap times were slashed by up to two seconds at most European circuits. This is in part due to not only the increase in power, but increased downforce and wider profile Michelin front tyres. Component run times have also been extended, offering lower running costs and reliability for all teams.

The 992-generation racer debuted in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup this year together with several other Carrera Cup Championships around the globe, including North America for the first time. The spectacularly styled Cup car is the first racing version based on the current 992 generation and the first one make-cup racer of the German sports car manufacturer to feature a wide turbo-spec body.

The first car to arrive in Australia was unveiled at Round 2 of Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Australia, which took place at The Bend Motorsport Park earlier this year. The 992 has since been on display at Porsche Centres around the country at various functions and customer events.

Producing around 375 kW (510 hp), the new 911 GT3 Cup exceeds the output of its immediate predecessor by 25 horsepower. The overall increase in performance of the 992 generation - over the Type 991 II generation - was immediately apparent in the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup rounds this year,

All 32 customer Type 992 Cup cars are currently on route to Australia and scheduled to arrive in Sydney in late December. Porsche Cars Australia will conduct technical presentations and handover with 2022 teams and drivers on the 23 January next year, with a test day scheduled the following day at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Ford unveils next-generation Ranger technologies. It also opens up the front of the pick-up to allow more airflow to the radiator, which helps keep running temperatures low when towing or carrying heavy loads. Engineers moved the front wheels forward by 50mm for a better approach angle and outboard for better offroad articulation, both of which improve the off-roading experience. They also shifted the rear suspension dampers outboard of the frame rails to give drivers and passengers a better ride both on- and off-road. Ford has revealed the next-generation Ranger family including the XL, XLS, XLT, Sport (which becomes a permanent member of the line-up) and Wildtrak which will begin production at its Thailand and South Africa plants in the beginning of 2022. A new 3-litre V6 turbodiesel engine with a 10-speed automatic replaces the venerable 3.2-litre inline five-cylinder engine, and the current high-performance 2-litre Bi-turbo four cylinder engine is joined by a single turbo model aimed at the fleet and price conscious customer. The next-generation Ranger has grown 50mm longer and wider to maximise tray space as well as provide a more comfortable interior, and better ride and handling says Ford Ford says the next-generation Ranger has been designed and engineered in response to feedback from more than 5,000 global customers. It says the Melbourne based engineers developed an upgraded chassis and suspension that ensures excellent ride and handling, whether riding with passengers, fully loaded with cargo or towing. Ford has also outlined its “always-on” commitment to customers, with a host of services centred around convenience on their terms. Depending on market, these include service pick-up and delivery, a Ranger Concierge program, and streamlined online service booking options. Visually, the Ranger exterior shares Ford’s global truck design DNA. The design features a defined new grille, and signature C-clamp headlight treatment at the front while a subtle shoulder line down the sides incorporates bolder wheelarches says the manufacturer. For the first time, Ford Ranger offers LED headlights. At the back, the taillights are designed in harmony with the signature graphics on the front. Inside, the car-like cabin steps offers premium soft-touch materials, and prominent portrait-style centre touchscreen with Ford’s SYNC4 connectivity and entertainment system. Beneath the new bodywork is an upgraded chassis riding on a wheelbase 50mm longer and a track 50mm wider than the prior Ranger. A hydro-formed front-end structure creates more space in the engine bay for the new V6 engine and helps future-proof the Ranger for other propulsion

22

Customers will have a choice of two four-wheel drive systems, an electronic shift-on-the-fly system, or advanced full-time 4×4 system with a reassuring set-and-forget mode.

“Customers told us the Ranger needs to look

tough and needs to inspire confidence,” said Max Tran, chief designer for Ranger. “They were very

clear in what Ranger should be, both in the way it looks, and the way it makes them feel.”

The heart of the Ranger’s connective experience is the 10.1-inch or 12-inch touchscreen in the centre stack. It complements the fully digital instrument panel and is loaded with Ford’s latest SYNC4® system, which comes customer-ready with its voice-activated communications, entertainment and information systems. Additionally, there’s an embedded factory-fitted modem, allowing connectivity on the go when linked with the FordPass app, so customers can stay connected to their world. FordPass enhances the ownership experience with features such as Remote Start iv, Vehicle Status Check and Remote Lock and Unlock functions via a mobile device. Additional customer-focused touches include a new, tough plastic-moulded bedliner that helps protect both the truck bed from scratches and owner’s knees from kneeling on a steel truck bed. Extra cargo tie down points – on strong steel tube rails – provide convenient points to secure loads. Durable, flexible load box caps around the sides of the box and across the tailgate conceal structural attachment points for canopies and other aftermarket accessories. In addition, Ranger offers a new cargo management system designed with dividers to hold various sized item such as timber or toolboxes. Owners also can create smaller compartments to store objects, which would otherwise have to go in the cab, using a system of ultrastrong spring-loaded cleats that clip into rails bolted to each side of the cargo box. The tailgate can also double as a mobile work bench with clamp pockets to measure, grip and cut building materials. Source: autotalk.com.au

EV charging infrastructure the key

In spite of EVs’ roaring success, adequate charging infrastructure is lagging behind. So says IDTechEx in noting many EV owners charge their cars at home using a wall-mounted charger but those who live in apartments or do not have a driveway may have difficulty accessing adequate EV charging. “Parking garages are rarely equipped with charging infrastructure, and installing such infrastructure may be costprohibitive for building managers,” it says in the latest report Charging Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles and Fleets 20222032. An expanded charging infrastructure is needed for EVs to make long-distance trips that require multiple stops for charging, so building a robust public “fuelling” network of charging stations is the key to a successful EV market, IDTechEx says. At home, followed by the workplace, remains the most favourable location for EV charging. This means that the market for public charging stations is in DC fast charging targeted at on-the-go, cross-country (long-range) driving, and in emergencies, it adds. Do public charging stations help drive EV adoption, or does greater EV adoption demand a more comprehensive public charging infrastructure? Some charging providers are competing for space at libraries, museums, parks, retailers, municipal parking garages, and anywhere else that is willing to install a station. Stakeholders need to abandon the current model of using public funds and grants to install stations, IDTechEx suggests. “Historically, such large projects have tended to be unprofitable due to high upfront costs; electric car use will need to become more widespread before they can turn a profit.

24

“The ideal end state is a sustainable, market-driven industry. It will never reach that status unless it unlocks a real value proposition as uncovered in the new report.” Managing the potential incremental energy demand that EV charging could put on the grid is crucial, IDTechEx believes. “Expert assessments vary on how much electricity demand will increase with widespread EV use. “The US Department of Energy predicts a 38% increase in electricity consumption by 2050, mostly due to a high penetration of EVs.

“Smart charging technology and off-grid charging

solutions, that are covered in the IDTechEx report, will become more favourable where grids do not have

the available excess capacity to generate increased amounts of power with existing infrastructure.”

IDTechEx expects total charging installations to increase by 11 times from 2021 to 2032. It believes the EV industry will continue with its “staggering momentum”. “Over the coming decade, demand for charging infrastructure will be driven by over 175 million plug-in EVs in use globally including passenger cars, buses, trucks, and vans. “The benefits of the electric vehicle transition are at least an order of magnitude greater than charging infrastructure costs, making charging infrastructure a modest down payment to decarbonise the transport sector.” The IDTechEx report provides a comprehensive overview of various charging technologies and standards globally, including fast charging, inductive and capacitive charging, mobile charging, robotic and autonomous charging, battery swapping as well as dedicated charging for fleet EVs. Triumphant Ogier bows out with eighth WRC title in nine seasons

Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia swept to a remarkable eighth FIA World Rally Championship title in nine seasons in Italy at the end of November. The Frenchmen ended their careers together in style with victory at FORUM8 ACI Rally Monza after a thrilling showdown with Toyota Gazoo Racing team-mate Elfyn Evans. The lead changed hands six times across three days of challenging speed tests in the foothills of the Italian Alps and at Monza’s iconic Temple of Speed circuit.

behind Evans. Spaniard Sordo demoted teammate Thierry Neuville on Saturday afternoon when the Belgian spun into a barrier. Neuville ended 10.7sec behind. The event marked the end of the World Rally Car era after 25 seasons. Next year will bring the introduction of exciting new hybrid-powered Rally1 cars to the championship. Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

The outcome was decided when Evans spun in the penultimate speed test, allowing Ogier to win by 7.3sec in a Yaris World Rally Car. Ogier will step back from full-time driving next year, while this marked Ingrassia’s final rally. “I just feel kind of empty right now because it’s always an exhausting season,” said a jubilant Ogier, whose win marked the 200th world rally success for France. Ogier survived a massive final morning fright when he clipped a concrete barrier at Monza. The impact took a chunk out of his front right tyre, but the Pirelli rubber remained inflated. His championship winning margin was 23 points from Evans. Their 1-2 finish ensured a clean sweep of the major titles as Toyota also secured the manufacturers’ honours for the first time since 2018 after winning nine of the 12 rounds. Dani Sordo completed the podium in a Hyundai i20, 14.0sec

Van Gisbergen delighted with second supercars title

A ‘non-event’ has granted Shane van Gisbergen a wellearned second Repco Supercars Championship title at the Sydney Motorsport Park, Heavy rain hit the second-leg of the Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight bringing about the cancellation of Race 60. With no points awarded, van Gisbergen clinched the driver’s title with an unassailable 349-point lead over Red Bull Ampol Racing team mate Jamie Whincup with one round, the Bathurst 1000, remaining.

“Although Sydney Motorsport Park isn’t my favourite track, it’s been cool that we’ve been able to come here and we’ve been well accommodated here. The facilities are awesome, and it’s been a great home base for the guys prepping the cars every week, so I appreciate what the staff have done for us over the last four weeks.

“It’s still pretty fresh and the feeling of it all hasn’t really sunk in, but it’s been an awesome year,” commented van Gisbergen. “We’ve had some challenges, some ups and downs, but we’ve come here to Sydney with a plan with and we’ve pretty much executed that plan at every race.

“We’ve been super consistent and did what we

needed to do, and overall, it’s been an awesome year. I obviously had some challenges earlier in the year

breaking myself, but the car has been fantastic, the team has been fantastic, and I’m super stoked with everything.

The 32-year-old now becomes the 14th driver in the ATCC/ Supercars history to win two or more titles. His Triple Eight Race Engineering team (Red Bull Ampol Racing) won its tenth teams’ title.

26

“Our race pace was always good, but we could never qualify well, but we executed our plans and ended up with the most points over the last four weeks which is awesome. Van Gisbergen also won the Beaurepaires Sydney Cup and $25,000 cash prize for the top driver over the four consecutive rounds held at the Sydney Motorsport Park. Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

New Kia Niro revealed Kia has shown its new Niro in a world debut at the Seoul Mobility Show where it is on display from November 25 to December 5 and available with hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and full electric (EV) powertrains starting from next year. “Kia continues to take steps towards a more sustainable future, inviting everyone to join the movement into the new mobility era,” Kia president and chief executive Ho Sung Song says.

“The all-new Kia Niro makes it simple to practice a sustainable lifestyle with its eco-friendly materials,

advanced technology and electric powertrains while it also fulfills the practical needs of customers.”

Recycled materials inside the cabin include the headlining made from recycled wallpaper, the seats from Bio PU with Tencel from eucalyptus leaves, and BTX-free (free from benzene, toluene, and xylene isomers) paint on the door panels to minimise environmental impact and reduce waste. The off-centre dash curves around the front occupants with horizontal and diagonal lines opposing each other to create a calming athough irregular aesthetic. The stylish centre-console is easy to operate and features the electronic dial-type shift lever. The audio-visual screen and air vents are incorporated within the diagonal gaps of the modern dash design, while ambient mood lighting is used.

Niro features may vary depending on the country or region but include a refreshed exterior with wide rear pillar, simple lines, a transformed tiger face, innovative interior features and sustainable materials. A ‘Greenzone Drive Mode’ technology integrates sustainability into daily life, Kia says. It automatically transfers the (P)HEV into EV drive mode to meet the demand for sustainable mobility solutions. When driving in green zones such as residential areas, or nearby schools and hospitals, the vehicle automatically uses electric power based on navigation cues and driving history data. It also recognises a driver’s favourite places, including home and office registered in the navigation system, as a green zone. The contemporary front design is finished with striking ‘heartbeat’ LED daytime running lights. A vertical taillight design highlights aerodynamics and technology.

The slim, contemporary seats enhance roominess, comfort and style by applying a high-tech lightweight seat mechanism. The headrests’ back cover incorporates a convenient coat hanger. Pricing, range and other details are not yet available and the new Kia Niro was teased prior to the unveiling. Source: autotalk.com.au

Chrysler waves goodbye to Australia Chrysler, which was once one of the big three in the Australian car industry is quitting the continent.

“Chrysler has held a special place in the heart of many Australians and we’re proud of its history here.”

It follows a decision by parent company Stellantis to withdraw the Chrysler brand from Australia which was the brand’s last remaining right-hand drive market.

Chrysler’s slant-six and V8 Valiants and Charger coupes vied in the 1960s and 1970s with Ford’s Falcon and Holden’s Kingswood, Monaro and Commodore for market supremacy and on the racetrack.

The global push towards electrification and focus on SUVs has resulted in a consolidation of the overall product line-up in Australia, Stellantis’ subsidiary Fiat Chrysler Australia (FCA) says. “Australian motoring enthusiasts have historically been fond of V8-powered sedans, which helped to cement the Chrysler brand as a foundation for those craving performance vehicles for decades,” says FCA managing director Kevin Flynn.

Mitsubishi dealers receive 4000 new Outlander orders The Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited (MMAL) dealer network has received more than 4000 orders for the all-new Outlander after the first 20 days of general sales. More than 10,379 pre-sale enquiries were registered through MMAL’s website by the end of October 2021. Dealers are reporting that Outlander customers viewed Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5 as their next most considered choices. The white paintwork in the vehicle’s pre-launch and launch imagery is mirrored by customer preferences, with more than half selecting either the White or White Diamond paint colours. MMAL says initial interest appears to be split across the model range and, while the variant sales trend won’t be clear before the end of the month, demand for the Exceed and Exceed Tourer models is far greater than expected. It is trying to secure additional production to meet the higher than expected levels of demand for its new medium SUV. “We’re delighted by the response given to the new Outlander, with acclaim coming from Australia’s motoring critics, from Mitsubishi dealers and, most importantly, from our customers,” MMAL chief executive Shaun Westcott says. “Despite healthy stock levels at launch, interest in the new

Outlander out of the gate has been unprecedented. We’re doing everything we can to prioritise the delivery of sold orders, and keep our customers informed with the latest delivery information,” he says. MMAL says the new Outlander’s run of global success looks set to continue after the new Plug-in Hybrid variant recently collected a Good Design Award 2021 from the Japan Institute of Design Promotion. The next phase of new Outlander launch is scheduled for the first half of 2022 when the new Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV lands in Australia. Boasting a larger 20kWh drivetrain battery (up from 13.8kWh), the new Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV offers a combined power boost of over 40% and a pure electric range extended from 54km (NEDC cycle) to 87km (WLTP cycle). Local pricing and specifications will be revealed closer to launch. Source: autotalk.com.au
