Van Gisbergen welcomes new team mate to Triple Eight Race Engineering Triple Eight Race Engineering has announced that Broc Feeney will join Shane van Gisbergen for the 2022 Australia Supercars Championship season, replacing Jamie Whincup at Red Bull Ampol Racing. The 18-year-old has signed a multi-year deal with the team which will see him replace the outgoing seven-time series champion, Whincup, and join 2016 Supercars Champion and 2020 Bathurst 1000 winner Shane van Gisbergen as teammate. “It’s a massive change for next year having Broc join the team for next season and beyond, which is a pretty exciting addition,” commented van Gisbergen. “The team, which includes myself, believes in Broc. He’s immersed himself in the team so well this year, and he’s shown everything he can and done all the right things to show that he deserves to be in that car next year. Feeney currently leads the Super2 Series, winning four of the six races so far in 2021. The former Super3 Series champion

and driver of the team’s 2021 Bathurst 1000 wildcard entry says he’s thrilled to have been given the opportunity to replace a champion of the sport with Triple Eight.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for me to be replacing ‘The GOAT’, Jamie Whincup. It’s so surreal for me at the moment, but I think it will start to kick in at the start of next year,” he said. “To be aligned with this amazing team in my Super2 season and to be promoted into the main series is a dream come true. To be honest, I always wanted to get to Supercars, but to be behind the wheel of a Red Bull Ampol Racing machine is pretty exciting.”

Round 3 Winner Congratulations to Lynelle, our lucky winner of the GetGenuine Esky. Click here to enter Round 4 and 5.

New hybrid WRC cars tested One of the WRC’s up-and-coming stars, Adrien Fourmaux, has made some interesting revelations about the new Rally1 hybrid cars that are set to debut in 2022. The current M-Sport driver recently had his first taste of the new Ford Puma on tarmac and revealed that in some situations the new car is potentially dangerous. The bulk of the testing so far has been done by Matthew Wilson, son of M-Sport boss Malcolm, but Fourmaux managed two days in the car after the Ypres Rally. Next year’s car will have more power than the current World Rally Cars, but will be heavier and have less aerodynamic aids that will likely make the cars less predictable at speed.

“The car is obviously heavier, but since the power is greater with the hybrid, it gives a good kick to the ass when everything is on the way!” Fourmaux said this week. “The FIA is still in the process of discussing how to use this additional power. But with the current operation and the

sudden arrival of power, I find that potentially dangerous,” he said. The 26-year old has been likened to a young Sebastien Loeb or Ogier in his ability and drive so early in his career, and looks almost certain to be get a full contract at the top level in 2002. All three WRC teams have begun testing their hybrid cars for next year, with footage widely available of the new Puma and Toyota Yaris. Of the three teams, only Ford have gone for a totally new model of car. Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

Big prize pool offered for S5000 Tasman Series $50,000 in prizemoney will be up for grabs in the S5000 Tasman Series this summer. The series winner will receive $30,000 for their efforts, with the runner-up winning $10,000 and third place $5,000. A further $5,000 bonus will be awarded to the best-placed New Zealand or international driver competing in the series. The re-launched Tasman Series will comprise seven races across two major events later this year, namely the Supercheap Auto Bathurst International (November 26-28) and the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 (December 3-5). An official ‘Twilight Tasman Test’ will also be held at Sydney Motorsport Park prior to the Bathurst International event. Final sporting regulations are currently being developed for the Tasman Series, with qualifying and race formats set to be an evolution of those successfully utilized throughout the S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship this year. The final points structure and grid determination system for the seven races will be confirmed in coming weeks and will continue

to provide the best possible mixture of rewarding race winners, while also promoting close competition throughout the series. The Tasman Series was first contested between 1964 and 1975 with the winner receiving the ‘Tasman Cup’, a trophy co-owned by Motorsport Australia and Motorsport New Zealand. Both organisations are supporting the return of the Tasman Series brand and the Tasman Cup trophy via S5000 this year. Every race will be broadcast live on the Seven Network or Fox Sports in Australia and Sky Sport in New Zealand. Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

Pandemic continues to hit Australian Rally Championship There are major concerns whether the Australian Rally Championship will reach its conclusion in November. The championship’s next round is in South Australia in mid-October, however, the SA state government have been one of the strictest in the country in terms of border controls.

With the NSW wave showing absolutely no signs of slowing down – and with over 800 new cases of COVID every day – it’s seems highly unlikely teams will be able to head to SA in a little over a month’s time. The final two rounds are in Coffs Harbour on consecutive weekends in November, but they too would only be a 50% chance of taking place as it currently stands. Only two rounds of the ARC have so far been run this year, in the ACT and Queensland. The goal of opening up the country when 70% of the population has been fully vaccinated still stands, but that won’t happen until later in the year. It means that at some stage in the next month, ARC organisers will need to make a call on whether the 2021 season can continue.

Yasser Shanhin claims The Bend shootout He fell an agonizing half-a-second short of claiming a circuit record, however Yasser Shahin still claimed the 2021 The Bend Classic event with a weekend-fastest time in the top-10 shootout. Though his potential rivals for the event victory had fallen by the wayside with mechanical issues by the time the Shootout arrived, Shahin was still keen to trump the existing record set last year by former Supercars racer, Josh Kean. Gunning the 1m10.08s benchmark, Shahin threw everything at his Shootout lap aboard his screaming Formula Renault 3.5 V8, however his 1m10.540s flyer fell narrowly short of the record he was chasing. Still, he claimed the perpetual Classic trophy thanks to topping the runoff ahead of Sebastien Amadio’s S5000 and JP Drake’s Wolf Mistral Sports Car. It remains the second-fastest lap recorded on the 3.4km circuit, with the first sub-70 second lap seemingly not far away.

Drake, who missed Saturday’s commitments, was third fastest on his one lap dash aboard his still new Wolf, while Chris Slusarski was fourth aboard the first of the Formula Toyota FT-50s. After developing fuelling issues on Saturday, Sam Shahin’s Benneton B198 was also left to static display duties however will return next year. 2021 Dunga Derby The 2021 Dunga Derby was held on the 29th July – 1st August 2021, and collectively raised $519,947 for families in need across the Fraser and Sunshine Coasts. The Dunga Derby is a car rally that sees up to 62 team vehicles from the Fraser Coast, up to 26 teams from the Sunshine Coast and approximately 330 people take part in a 4 day adventure travelling from the Coast to the Country. This event is headed by RALLY FOR A CAUSE, a community charity proudly raising funds to support families and individuals affected by life-limiting medical conditions or have had their lives disrupted by circumstances beyond their control. Starting on the Fraser coast in 2015, Rally for a Cause has raised over $1.8 million for families and individuals in the Fraser Coast and Sunshine Coast regions and has assisted over 144 recipient families with much needed equipment and/or financial support. If you would like to be a part of this wonderful cause, donate some of your GetGenuine points through the Rewards Shop. GetGenuine will be matching every point donated, with great appreciation to our friends at Pialba Smash who have supported the cause since 2015.

THE RULES ▶

To qualify as a “Dunga” the vehicle must be over ten years old and cost under $2,000.

To make the event a challenge and lots of fun, there are plenty of dirt and gravel tracks along the way to test the cars. The rally travels through and stops in small towns along the way, also injecting much needed money into these communities.

Teams consist of 3 people who are happy to share the driving. The registration fee covers all of the main meals, camping fees and entertainment. At night, swags and tents come out for a night of fun and stories of the day around the campfire. Teams are encouraged to theme their cars and proudly display the stickers of their supporting sponsors.

Each of our teams has a responsibility to raise a minimum $2,000 which goes directly to the Charity efforts.

Wellbeing Benefits of Growing Your Food

The mental health and overall wellbeing benefits of edible gardening, indeed any gardening, has come at a welcome time. In a year that has really proven challenging to all, the value of mental and spiritual health derived from gardens in the home has now really come to the fore. Vegepod’s self-watering, self-contained and portable raised garden beds have provided benefits from sustainable eating to therapeutical horticulture. This type of activity has been proven to:

Lower Anxiety

Aid Depression

Provide a connection to nature

Encourage responsibility, care and feelings of reward

Reduce Stress

Calm the mind

Activate Key Motor Skills

Facilitate Social Interaction

Beyond Blue Australia reviewed multiple methods in their publication What Works for Depression, which you can read here. One of the methods assessed is natureassisted therapy. Nature-assisted therapy is the use of plants, natural materials and the outdoor environment to improve health. It includes therapeutic horticulture (gardening and plant-related activities to improve wellbeing) and wilderness or outdoor adventure excursions. One study has been carried out looking at the effects of gardening for two months in depressed female

university students. There were 50 students who either did the gardening or received no treatment. The gardening group was found to improve more. “Harvesting and eating produce you have planted from seed and watch grow over time is an amazing feeling,” says Simon Holloway from Vegepod. “We have seen time and again the incomparable joy of gardeners accessing nature and fresh food from our Vegepods and other gardens. Every backyard irrespective of size or location can achieve a more self-sustainable and environmentally friendly way of life.”.

Five-star safety ratings for Isuzu MU-X and Toyota Yaris Cross ANCAP Safety has awarded the maximum five-star safety ratings to the Isuzu MU-X large SUV and the Toyota Yaris Cross small SUV. The safety performance of the seven-seat Isuzu MU-X follows its partner model, the Isuzu D-MAX, with both Isuzu models now carrying a five star safety rating having scored well across all four key areas of ANCAP assessment. Due to the similarities between the two models, many of the test results obtained through testing of the D-MAX last year were able to be carried across to the MU-X, with supplementary testing conducted where the MU-X’s design and safety performance was likely to differ. The MU-X was subject to a fresh frontal offset (MPDB) test which revealed a slightly better score of 87% for Adult Occupant Protection when compared to the D-MAX (83%) with improved protection offered to the chest and upper legs of the driver and chest and lower legs of the front passenger. The protection offered to occupants in the second row was poorer than the D-MAX’s perfect score in this test, however remained well within the five star threshold. The Isuzu MU-X is equipped with a full suite of airbags, including a centre airbag to prevent severe occupant-tooccupant and occupant-to-vehicle contact in far-side impact crashes. A driver knee airbag and curtain airbags extending into the third seating row are also standard on all MU-X variants. The MU-X also has a driver monitoring system and intelligent seat belt reminders for all seating positions. “The MU-X takes advantage of the safety features already demonstrated in the D-MAX, and its pleasing to see this strong performance carried over into the Large SUV segment,” ANCAP chief executive officer Carla Hoorweg says.

“Safety is a must for those in the market for a seven-seat family vehicle, and the MU-X provides a safe choice for active families.” Similarly, the safety performance of the Toyota Yaris Cross follows that of the Yaris hatch in offering a balanced level of active and passive safety to buyers in the Small SUV segment. Toyota Yaris Cross 2021 ANCAP Oblique Pole impact test “The Yaris Cross achieved maximum points for its protection of adult occupants in the side impact, oblique pole and whiplash tests. Occupant-to-occupant protection was also good, with the Yaris Cross fitted as standard with dual centre airbags between the front seats to minimise potential head injury in side impact crashes,” Hoorweg says. The protection provided by the Yaris Cross to pedestrians, if struck, was good. Its ability to actively avoid collisions with pedestrians through its autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system also scored well in forward-travel test scenarios, however the standard AEB system does not react to vulnerable road users in reverse and a nil score for AEB back-over was applied. The AEB system fitted to the Isuzu MU-X is also not capable of detecting and reacting to pedestrians in reverse, with a nil score for AEB back-over also applied. “Both the Isuzu MU-X and Toyota Yaris Cross are very well equipped in the areas of physical crash protection and active collision avoidance, making them safe choices within their respective segments,” Hoorweg says. August new car sales up 33% in Australia New vehicles sales in Australia are up 33% on the same month last year, demonstrating the resilience of the market in spite of the impacts of lock downs and microprocessor shortages says the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI). Toyota was market leader in August with 24.6% of overall sales. This was followed by Mazda (9.4%), and then Kia, Ford and Hyundai who all recorded around 6.2% of market share. The Toyota Hilux was the highest selling model with 4770 sold with the Ford Ranger and Toyota Corolla achieving second and third place. Consumers purchased a total of 81,199 new vehicles during the month of August, despite Covid-19 restricting access to vehicle showrooms in many States and Territories. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory all recorded growth greater than 30% compared to August 2020. Victorian sales have rebounded resulting in an increase of more than 150%, while the ACT and NSW recorded declines. FCAI chief executive Tony Weber says that uncertainty around lockdowns meant manufacturers were having to remain agile in the ways they engage with customers. “The bounce of 33% on last year’s figure demonstrates the resolve of car manufacturers to engage with customers and drive-up new vehicle ownership.

“With access to showrooms limited, vehicle makers are working to engage customers in their homes and other places of isolation,” he says. Strong sales of electric SUVs amidst a global shortage of microprocessor parts are a result of manufacturers working with their suppliers to match vehicles with market demand.

Key Points: The August 2021 market of 81,199 new vehicle sales is an increase of 20, 213 vehicle sales or 33.1% on August 2020 (60,986) vehicle sales. August 2021 had 26 selling days compared to August 2020 with 25.8 which resulted in an increase of 759.2 vehicle sales per day. The passenger vehicle market is up by 2581 vehicle sales (17.5%) over the same month last year; the sports utility market is up by 8603 vehicle sales (26.6%); the light commercial market is up by 8002 vehicle sales (71.2%); and the heavy commercial vehicle market is up by 1027 vehicle sales (39.3%) versus August 2020. Toyota was market leader in August, followed by Mazda and Hyundai. Toyota led Mazda with a margin of 12,314 vehicle sales and 15.2 market share points.

Peroni heading back to Europe Single seater driver, Alex Peroni, is heading back to Europe and will miss the remainder of the Indy Lights season in the US. His focus on returning to Europe comes after the Australian moved to the United States earlier this year to compete in Indy Lights for Carlin with Jay Howard Driver Development. Having stood once on the podium from his 14 races in the series, he will miss the remaining six of the 2021 season.

“I’m looking forward to some exciting opportunities that 2022 has in store for me and a return to racing where I can mix it with the frontrunners,” said Peroni. “This year hasn’t lived up to our expectations in racing performance, however I’ve really enjoyed visiting the US for the first time and living here for the past seven months. Peronis has previously competed in Europe contesting two FIA Formula 3 Championship campaigns where he picked up three podiums in his second season. He has also competed in the Formula Renault Eurocup series winning in both Pau and Monaco.

“I’d like to thank all of the incredibly friendly and welcoming people in the US that I met on my journey. The warm welcomes I received at race events in particular were fantastic.”

Jett Johnson clean sweeps second round of Northern Series 16-year-old Jett Johnson has scored his first circuit racing win of his career from pole position in Race 1 of the PROMAXX Performance Exhausts TA2 Muscle Car Northern Series powered by Atlantic Oils at Queensland Raceway. Following his maiden circuit racing victory, Johnson put the metal down and cantered away to win the final three races of the weekend, by margins of 3.7 seconds, 2.1 seconds and a massive 7.5 second margin in the final.

“I’m really happy with how the weekend went,” said Jett Johnson. “From the first practice session we rolled out I knew we were on for a good weekend, the car was on rails and I knew it was up to my to conserve the tyres, conserve the car and not make any mistakes. “I knew we had a chance to run up the front, but I never would have thought we would came away with pole and all four race

wins, so it’s been a great weekend. The third-generation of the Johnson racing dynasty scored his first PWR Pole Award earlier in the day by sixthousandths of a second from Russell Wright, with Chris Pappas impressing in third from Murray Kent. Johnson took his fourth win from as many races to take the lead in the PROMAXX Performance Exhausts TA2 Northern Series standings by nine points over Russell Wright. Volante Rosso targets S5000 expansion Volante Rosso Racing has taken delivery of their first S5000 chassis with a view to an expansion into Australia’s top open wheel category in the near future. The experienced Porsche Carrera Cup squad, headed up by former Formula One Engineer Chris Papadopoulos and racer Josh Hunt, is working towards a Tasman Series debut this November - but also has eyes on a full-time tilt at the 2022 S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship.

“There’s no doubt S5000 is right up our alley, given the open wheel backgrounds both Chris and I have,” Hunt explained. Volante Rosso has since spent time getting to know the Rogers AF01/V8 chassis and Ford Coyote engine package, including Hunt spending time behind the wheel in a Sydney Motorsport Park test session. After spending time behind the wheel at the fast, flowing Sydney Motorsport Park circuit, Hunt was impressed with his first S5000 taste. “We liked a lot about the car. Chris’ background in open-wheel racing is quite extreme, in Formula One, while mine is a bit more specific having raced in the USA and their style of cars.

26

“Interestingly, I think the S5000 and the cars in the US share some DNA. They’re heavier than the European cars and F3 or F4 you’ve seen here, but the car is quite dynamic and the driving style is similar. The re-launched Tasman Series will be comprise seven races across two major events later this year, namely the Supercheap Auto Bathurst International (November 26-28) and the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 (December 3-5). Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

Australian V8s break million

dollar auction records Collectible and desirable Australian-produced Ford and Holden V8 muscle cars are now consistently selling for more than a million dollars, breaking all previous auction house records. Lloyds Auctions sold a Yellow Glow, Ford GTHO Phase III Falcon under the hammer for a record-breaking $1.3 million on September 25 following a heated online bidding war. The auction house says the online bids roared from $800,000 onwards igniting the competition between prospective owners. “The Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III receives so much attention because it is the pinnacle of Australian muscle cars and has consistently held its value over its lifespan since its release in 1971, so they attract bidders including enthusiasts, collectors as well as investors,” Lloyds Auctions chief operating officer Lee Hames says. A 1996 HSV VS GTSR also broke an auction record for its model on September 25 selling under the hammer for $1 million. This vehicle was build #001 off the production, still wrapped in its original plastic and showing 86km on the odometer.

“This classic is incredibly hard to find for Holden enthusiasts, it is one of 85 ever built, rarer than the two-door A9X Torana. Because of its collectability and the interest we have had on the vehicle since its publish we are not surprised this vehicle achieved seven figures,” Hames says. 30

The 1996 HSV wasn’t the only rare model to go under the hammer on September 25. Lloyds Auctions says an HSV GTSR W1 sedan build #017 sold to a Holden enthusiast for $750,000 whilst an HSV GTSR W1 Maloo Ute reached a hammer price of $1,250,000 but went into negotiations expected to sell in the coming days.

“Nine months ago we saw a W1 Maloo Ute achieve seven figures at auction alongside a high six figure amount for a W1 Sedan and nine months later they have held if not increased in value and we expect this trend to continue,” Hames says. “Holdens and Fords continue to appreciate in value, anything of a limited build, celebrity affiliation, significant history or chrome bumpers just keeps going up in value and we urge any Holden or Ford enthusiast looking for advice to give us a call right now,” he says. With COVID-19 changing many areas of business operations, AutoPlay has launched an electronic “Visitors Book”, offering automatic and manual based check-in options for all visitors.

BE COVID SAFE

The tool helps all sectors of automotive keep a record of all contacts within their premises during COVID-19 and beyond. It is ideal for Automotive Dealerships, Independent repairers, Tyre Shops, Parts Shops, and Panel shops.
