YOUNG TAKES FOREST RALLY WIN BY 0.5 SECONDS! Perth Mike Young has narrowly won the Forest Rally, round 2 of the West Australian Rally Championship.

Young saw his chance, putting the hammer down for the last 17-kilometre stage and taking an epic win in the Maximum Motorsport Subaru, by just 0.5sec. “Awesome just stole it at the end there, really lucky,” commented Young. “We knew we were close to John going into the last stage and it was time for a big push. I felt pretty rusty at the start of the event with no rallies since October last year and I hadn’t driven this car on gravel before. We stuck to the plan to build our way up through the event, but 0.5 seconds was leaving it a bit close”.

WE KNEW WE WERE CLOSE TO JOHN GOING INTO THE LAST STAGE AND IT WAS TIME FOR A BIG PUSH.

Co-driver Scott Beckwith was especially excited about the win, his first ever outright win in 76 events. Both Young and Beckwith were quick to thank the Minister for Sport and the Mayor of Collie for their support, and to thank all the officials and volunteers for making the event possible.

The Kiwi was in second place for much of the 135 kilometre event (13th September), but when his arch rival and rally-leader John O’Dowd had an overshoot in his Skoda R5 on the penultimate 32 kilometre Wellington Dam stage, the gap between them was down to just 2.4 seconds.

Australian Rally Championship. Although COVID-19 cases

numbers now regularly below 50, the uncertainty over when

state borders would open was the final nail in the coffin for the championship.

The initial six-round Australian Rally Championship calendar

was trimmed to four events, and then to a two-event, four heat shoot-outs, before the axe finally came down.

“From a sporting point of view, it would be unfair to award a

Championship, if there are a number of those unable to leave

event location or when they return home,” Motorsport Australia Aussies will still have a chance to contest a national level event later this year though. In late November, Canberra will host

the National Capital Rally, an event that was always slated as a national round, but previously much early in 2020.

The two-day rally will count towards a ‘Motorsport Australia

Rally Cup’ – not a national title, but an event where it is hoped that many of the country’s leading crews will bring out their cars in preparation (hopefully) for 2021.

AUSTRALIAN 2020 FORMULA FORD SEASON CANCELLED The Formula Ford Association has officially announced that the 2020 Australian Formula Ford Championship will not take place. The Committee of the Formula Ford Association have

been pushing for months to put together a schedule of National Race meetings since the commencement of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Whilst the 2020 National Championship may be cancelled, most of the state-based events have continued across

the country. We thank all of the car clubs and organising

committees in each State for supporting Formula Ford and

allowing us to race, and we also thank many of our National

competitors who have opted for state championships this year

Given the Covid-19 restrictions in the State of Victoria, alongside border closures across the country, it has proved too difficult to organise any National Championship events this year.

Since its inception in 1970, this will be the first year without a National competition series for Formula Ford in Australia.

to stay fit for 2021.

To bounce back stronger than ever, the committee are

planning a competitive, affordable and diverse National

Championship for the 2021 season and hope to announce some dates and tracks over the upcoming months.

HYUNDAI ISSUES STOP DRIVE NOTICE

EMISSIONS RECALL FOR MERCEDES

Hyundai Motor Company has issued a stop drive warning for 28 HD-series Elantra vehicles from 2008 to 2009 due to a possible faulty airbag inflator.

Mercedes-Benz Australia Pacific Pty Limited has issued a recall notice to vehicle owners through Product Safety Australia for 956 AMG vehicles over a potential emissions issue.

According to Product Safety Australia, the manufacturer is recalling the vehicles because the driver’s airbag inflator may rupture in the event of airbag deployment.

The affected models from 2015 to 2018 include the MercedesAMG GTS, the Mercedes-AMG G63 and the Mercedes-AMG C63.

Hyundai Motor Company Australia says If the airbag inflator ruptures during airbag deployment, metal fragments may propel towards the vehicle occupants at high speeds. Additionally, it also says the airbag may under-inflate in a collision and may not protect the driver as intended. This increases the risk of serious injury or death to the vehicle occupants.

According to Mercedes-Benz Australia Pacific Pty Limited if the vehicle is shut off for more than 67 hours the engine control unit may not function as intended. This means the vehicle may not meet the required emissions standards. Owners are asked to contact their nearest Mercedes-Benz retailer for a free of charge software update.

Source: autotalk.com.au

Consumers should stop driving the vehicle says Hyundai Motor Company Australia. It will notify affected owners and invite them to take their vehicles to an authorised Hyundai dealership to have the driver airbag module replaced.

Affected consumers can find their nearest dealer by visiting https://www.hyundai.com.au/dealer Source: autotalk.com.au

OSCAR PIASTRI WINS FIA F3 TITLE Australian Oscar Piastri clinched the FIA Formula 3 Drivers’

Championship in an incredible battle to the wire at Mugello, as Liam Lawson dominated the final race for his third win of

the season. The New Zealander finished 7.8s ahead of David

Beckmann, while Théo Pourchaire fought his way to third to fall agonizingly short of the title, finishing just three points shy of Piastri in the standings.

“It’s still sinking in at the moment,” commented Piastri. “Obviously, it was a pretty chaotic race to decide the

Champion, so firstly, I feel really sorry for Logan (Sargeant). I

think it would have been awesome if we’d have had a straight fight for the title. But I guess that’s part of the game that is motorsport.”

“To come out on top is pretty cool, and it’s going to take a few more hours or days to sink in.” Logan Sargeant started the day second in the Championship order, level on points with Piastri, but was forced out of the

race on the very first lap after a coming together with Trident’s

Lirim Zendeli. A tantalizing two-way fight for the crown ensued between Piastri and Pourchaire, which did not disappoint.

Piastri began the day in 11th, but battled up to seventh at the

chequered flag to ensure the title was his despite Pourchaire’s best efforts.

Lawson’s win wasn’t enough to net him fourth in the

Championship, with the Kiwi falling to fifth after Frederik Vesti

followed up his Race 1 win with P9 and the fastest lap in Race 2. Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

PORSCHE DEALERSHIPS SIGN UP TO TYRE RECYCLING INITIATIVE The national network of Porsche Centres in Australia have signed up to a tyre recycling initiative. It is part of a national commitment Porsche Cars Australia has made to tyre recycling in partnership with Tyre Stewardship Australia. The agreement will ensure end-of-life tyres from all Porsche Centres will be collected and disposed of by a TSA-accredited recycler. It will also include tyres from PCA’s own fleet, included those cars from the Porsche Track Experience program. Tyre Stewardship Australia is an industry led framework that aims to reduce the environmental, health and safety impacts of end-of-life tyres. Its Tyre Stewardship Scheme is government supported and authorised by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). “Sustainability is an essential pillar of our corporate strategy at Porsche,” Porsche Cars Australia managing director and chief executive officer Sam Curtis says.

“This tyre recycling initiative is one of many steps we are taking here in Australia to continually enhance our environmental and social responsibility efforts,” he says. It is estimated that the equivalent of 56 million used tyres are generated from passenger vehicles in Australia every year with only 10% recycled in Australia. TSA has been instrumental in developing new markets for tyrederived products. It has committed $6million (AUD) to projects that use end-of-life tyres in new value-added products. “Although more than half of Australia’s used tyres are recycled, upcycled or reprocessed into other products, the equivalent of 27 million car tyres are wasted each year. These often end up in landfill, stockpiles or are exported overseas,” Tyre Stewardship Australia chief executive officer Lina Goodman says. End-of-life tyres can be recycled into rubber and tile adhesive, brake pads, rubber mats and commercial flooring, road surfacing and asphalt and also used an alternative fuel to produce cement.

CENTRE AIRBAGS BRING FIVE-STAR SAFETY RATING TO YARIS AND D-MAX The fitting of new centre airbag technology has assisted all variants of the Isuzu D-Max Utility and the Toyota Yaris light car to achieve an ANCAP 5-star safety rating under the latest test and rating criteria. ANCAP Safety’s expanded 2020 criteria have shown safety is of paramount importance regardless of market segment or vehicle use. Communications and advocacy director for ANCAP, Rhianne Robinson, says the 2020 requirements again set the bar higher to promote further vehicle safety improvements and address some of the ongoing challenges on Australasian roads. The new generation Isuzu D-MAX scored well across all key areas of assessment with the standard inclusion of a front-row centre airbag for added occupant protection – a first for the ute segment, autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist detection, multi-collision braking and active lanekeeping support. The protection offered to adult occupants in the side impact and oblique pole tests was good, with full points achieved, including for occupant-to-occupant head protection through the inclusion of the new centre airbag. Full points were also achieved for the protection of child occupants in the frontal offset and side impact scenarios. All 20 variants in the D-Max range – single cab, space cab, crew cab, and cab chassis – provide the same high-level safety features and technologies as standard. “The D-Max rating has been highly anticipated by fleet and private buyers and reestablishes the safety benchmark for the competitive ute segment where the introduction of safety features has tended to lag that of passenger cars and SUVs,” Robson says. In the light car segment, the new Toyota Yaris also performed well, achieving full points for the protection of adult occupants in both the side impact and oblique pole tests, and for the

protection of child occupants in the side impact scenario. The upgraded frontal offset (mobile progressive deformable barrier) test presents new challenges for vehicles, whether small or large. The test incorporates a moving barrier representing an oncoming vehicle. In this test, protection of the Toyota Yaris driver’s chest and legs was assessed as marginal. For the Isuzu D-Max, the chest and left femur of the driver were similarly assessed as marginal. All other critical body regions for occupants of the Yaris and D-Max were rated as either good or adequate. ANCAP has been testing the effectiveness of basic AEB systems – those that prevent rear-end crashes with other vehicles or impacts with cyclists and pedestrians – since 2018. “The Yaris introduces some of the most sophisticated passive and active safety systems – including dual centre airbags and AEB with Turn Assistance which are features that are being seen for the first time in 2020,” Robson says.

“While COVID-19 has resulted in a slight delay to testing and release of our first 2020 ratings, these ratings re-establish market and consumer expectations for 5 stars regardless of market segment or intended use. “ “With the new challenges set by ANCAP from 2020, it is pleasing to see manufacturers achieve good results against these increasing standards and take responsibility by prioritising safety to provide their customers with the safest vehicles they can,” Robson says. Both the Isuzu D-Max and Toyota Yaris have also supplied ISO compliant rescue sheets – a new requirement of ANCAP’s 2020 test protocols – to assist with first responder response time in the event of a crash. WHAT IS SEPSIS? Maddy Jones was an 18-year-old Honours Law student in the prime of her life. She was intelligent, beautiful, very independent, wickedly funny, sarcastic, and sometimes irreverent. was an 18-year-old Honours Law student in the prime of her life. She was intelligent, beautiful, very independent, wickedly funny, sarcastic, and sometimes irreverent. Maddy was a great lover of all of God’s creatures, in particular dogs. She was larger than life. A high achiever, who through sheer dedication and perseverance, typically got what she wanted.

She had a love of Tennis and attended the Queensland Tennis School of Excellence at Kelvin Grove State College during her high school years While at University she continued her tennis and coached young children at Southern Cross Tennis.

One Thursday afternoon Maddy complained that she was feeling sick. We took her to the first available GP appointment the next day, Friday. She complained that she was feeling worse on Saturday, so we presented to an Emergency Department where she was diagnosed with the Flu and sent home to rest. In the early hours of Tuesday morning she asked me to call her an Ambulance. By lunchtime that day she was in a coma and nine days later she was dead, just two weeks shy of her 19th Birthday. Maddy had the signs of Sepsis. Pale skin, shortness of breath, muscular pain, fever, vomiting. She knew she was very sick but we told her that she had the flu. We had not heard of Sepsis before. We did not know the signs of Sepsis and we did not ask “Could this be Sepsis?”. What I would give now to have known those words. Maddy is my daughter.

Maddy was farewelled at a service where over 800 people overflowed from the church. Yet my guess is that only the medical staff that attended would have heard of, or known anything about, Sepsis. How could we have not heard about a condition that is responsible for more deaths in Australia than Breast Cancer or the national road toll? The Maddy Jones Foundation is Maddy’s gift to the world. Through Maddy’s story, her legacy, she will continue to be an achiever by saving the lives of others. The Maddy Jones Foundation aims to eliminate preventable deaths and disabilities resulting from a lack of Sepsis awareness, speedy diagnosis and immediate medical treatment by raising awareness for the public and healthcare professionals through education programs and initiatives that promote the early diagnosis of Sepsis through the identification of symptoms, leading to urgent and effective treatment. AUGUST AUSTRALIAN USED-VEHICLE PRICES 25% HIGHER THAN LAST YEAR Used-vehicle prices in Australia are now 25% higher than

they in August 2019, despite the COVID-19 pandemic and recession says a September report authored by Moody’s Analytics senior economist Michael Brisson.

The annual growth rate broke the previous record set in December 2009, when prices rose by 20% following the 2008 global financial crisis.

Brisson says the deluge of new customers in Australia to the used-vehicle market has pushed up prices for both passenger cars and utes. Both segments have experienced tremendous gains since the lockdowns began to be lifted in May. The ute segment which includes SUVs and light trucks, has increased by 32% from the previous year. The wholesale passenger car market

He says the strength of utes during the pandemic has been

This is an acceleration in price gains compared with the 4.7%

month-over-month price increase in July.

Brisson says the increased demand for vehicles is coming from people who are shunning ride share services and public transportation, either out of fear of contracting the virus or not wanting to deal with the hassles of increased precautions. In addition to the greater demand, supply concerns continue to hamper the automotive market according to Brisson. Dealerships have complained about not having enough inventory coming into port to keep up with the demand for new vehicles. Additionally, in the early days of the lockdown, vehicle leases were extended by six to 12 months and those vehicles are yet to make their way back to market, and banks are still forgoing repossessions, limiting another avenue for vehicles to enter the wholesale market.

decline in petrol prices can reliably predict that fuel-hungry vehicles such as trucks and utes will rise in price. Brisson says this is because lower fuel costs decrease the overall cost of vehicle ownership to a greater degree for the less fuel-efficient vehicles. He says history shows the two have an inverse relationship, fuel prices down, ute prices up and vice versa. He predicts the gains for utes compared with passenger cars will likely slow, as fuel prices have come back from lows set earlier in the year. Brisson believes that price gains should slow as supply increases with sellers seeking to take advantage of the high prices and COVID-19-realted demand gets wrung out, but he says the extraordinary gains are not expected to quickly turn south. He says the rise in prices has shown to be persistent over the past three months and given current fundamentals, will likely stay elevated with pre-pandemic values. Source: autotalk.com.au

GOVT TO OFFER AUSTRALIAN BUSINESSES EV GRANTS The federal government’s intention to offer Australian businesses grants for EVs, reported to be about $74.5 million, as part of its new clean energy package is welcomed by the Electric Vehicle Council. The council says it will create benefit not just for the businesses themselves, but for the broader community and will help electrify Australia’s used car market. “We know businesses are waking up to the many benefits of electrifying their fleets and these grants should be the incentive they need to break with combustion engine tradition,” EVC chief executive Behyad Jafari says. “For a number of years the Electric Vehicle Council has been advocating strongly for such grants, in part because we are excited about the opportunities they create for the secondary electric vehicle market.” “If we want to make the benefits of electric vehicles accessible to all consumers we must take steps to stimulate a healthy market for used electric cars,” he says.

EVC chief executive Behyad Jafari “Businesses tend to recycle their fleets every few years so if they are incentivised to purchase new electric vehicles today we should see them starting to appear in numbers on the used car market soon.” “In the meantime, we will be cleaning our urban air, reducing noise pollution, and lowering carbon emissions.” Jafari says it’s a positive step from the federal government and the council hopes to see it built upon in the coming weeks. AUSLOANS LAUNCHES POINT OF SALE FINANCE FOR CAR DEALERSHIPS AusLoans Finance Group has just released its Zink for business finance solution, a version of ‘buy now, pay later’ technology. It offers finance from more than 40 lenders for items priced from $5,000 to $75,000, in just 10 minutes. AusLoans managing director Rodney Michail says the technology had proven to close an average of 40% more financed deals for users since being released to car dealerships across Australia late last year. “Not too long ago, offering finance as a business and applying for finance as a consumer was a real headache, but with this new technology things have become a lot simpler, providing huge customer satisfaction,” he says. “We’ve seen the rapid rise of Afterpay-style lenders for items up to $2000 and this new technology is designed to similarly remove the pain associated with traditional big-ticket financing, with the entire loan approval process taking as little as 10 minutes while customers are in-store or online.”

“It is already proving to be a game-changer in the COVID-19 safe car dealership space, being completely touch-less, and we are now ready to start offering the technology to a broader spectrum of businesses.” Michail says Zink was a 100% free for partners, customer financing solution that made it easy for businesses to offer finance and for customers to apply and qualify. “For customers, Zink delivers the convenience of a fast, paperless, point of sale finance solution that has zero impact on their credit file, with a result while in-store,” Michail says. “It also gives them access to one of the biggest lender pools in the country, meaning finding the right lender to suit their needs is also fast and simple while meeting the best interest duty of financiers in this climate.”

“All that is required is basic information and a copy of the customer’s drivers’ license, and Zink delivers a traffic light assessment of the customer’s credit capabilities, informs how much a customer can borrow and matches them with the best funders and deals to suit their personal circumstances.” “A green assessment means go, orange needs further investigation, and red means the customer needs some credit repair before the loan can proceed.” Michail says Zink provided a finance solution for a range of businesses, including big-ticket retailers and home improvement businesses. “These businesses may not have been able to provide a solution like this in the past, but Zink makes it easy for them to do so, helping turn quotes into customers,” he says. Michail says businesses partnering with AusLoans are provided with a bespoke co-branded Zink finance application portal. “This is then paired with a professional broker to help package finance offers into affordable weekly or monthly payment plans, and all the tools needed to start promoting finance solutions,” he says. “Zink can be offered online, in-store or on the road, with businesses able to direct customers to apply through their Zink Portal and the technology’s automation then takes care of the rest.” “Once the customer finance is approved and signed off, the full purchase amount is transferred directly to the business or purchaser’s account with no merchant fees, while customers are kept informed via SMS through the process, resulting in a great customer experience that helps drive repeat business and referral customer sales.” Source: autotalk.com.au

SIX TIPS on how to use social media in a positive way.

Social media doesn’t tend to be widely trumpeted as something that benefits our mental health but when used moderately and mindfully, it can help boost our sense of wellbeing. At present, only a few studies examining social media and mental health have found a direct correlation between social media and depression and its related symptoms. However, research indicates that excessive use of social media may disrupt things that have a positive impact on mental health – for example, exercising, sleeping and socialising. Also, FOMO (fear of missing out) and comparing ourselves to other people online can create feelings of jealousy, anxiety, and inadequacy.

Social media is here to stay Love it or hate it, social media is a part of modern life for many people. Being aware of its positive and negative effects on our mental health – and tailoring how we use it – is no doubt the best way forward.

MERCEDES-BENZ INTRODUCES EQ POWER TO AUSTRALIAN A-CLASS RANGE Mercedes-Benz has introduced its EQ Power technology to the A-Class sedan and hatch featuring plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology. The release of the A-Class 250e sedan and hatch variants also marks the first time rapid DC charging is available for a MercedesBenz PHEV passenger vehicle. The manufacturer says EQ Power means the A 250 e can complete urban journeys up to 73 km in EV mode solely using the electric motor (75 kW / 300 Nm) and on-board battery (15.6 kWh capacity), which can also recoup additional energy during braking. For urban motorists, this allows largely emission-free motoring on a daily basis. Meanwhile, a 1.3-litre, four-cylinder combustion engine (118 kW / 250 Nm) comes into its own to complete longer road trips.

To maximise the speed of charging at home or work, customers can choose a Mercedes-Benz Wallbox Home ($1250 MRLP). This can be installed on regular single-phase power (by a qualified electrician) to deliver up to 7.4 kW, or up to 22 kW on three-phase power for further future-proofing. Optionally, customers can purchase a DC Charging Package ($1490 MRLP), marking the first time this feature has been made available on a Mercedes-Benz PHEV passenger vehicle.

Combined, the output of the hybrid powertrain is 160 kW and 450 Nm. Switching seamlessly between EV and ICE methods creates fuel economy opportunities of 1.6L/100km (ADR combined cycle), with tailpipe emissions measured at 34 grams/km CO2.

This introduces fast DC charging at 24 kW via a Type 2 CCS plug. Using DC charging, it may be possible to charge from 10 per cent capacity to 80 per cent in as little as 25 minutes. In addition, the Charging Package upgrades the AC charging system to 7.4 kW.

Mercedes-Benz says the A-Class architecture was engineered to accommodate a PHEV drivetrain from the inception of the design. The result is clever integral packaging with minimal practical compromise. The water-cooled lithium-ion, high voltage battery weighs 150 kg and requires only a small reduction to overall boot space – 310 litres (hatch) or 355 litres (sedan).

The A 250 e drives power to the front wheels via an 8G-DCT Hybrid eight-speed auto. Acceleration to 100km/h from rest takes 6.6 seconds for the A 250 e hatch, and 6.7 seconds for the sedan.

This is assisted by the installation of a 35-litre fuel tank, plus an innovative exhaust system with a rear muffler housed in the transmission tunnel and a centrally positioned exhaust outlet under the floor. For the first time yet on a Mercedes-Benz vehicle, the combustion engine is started by the electric motor – the A 250 e does not have a separate 12-volt starter. The A 250 e models are equipped with a standard Type 2 plug, and are capable of delivering charge via AC power at a rate of up to 3.7 kW.

Drive programs include ‘Electric’ and ‘Battery Level’. Maximum e-performance can be experienced in Electric. When selected, the combustion engine is only engaged if the driver extends the accelerator beyond the ‘kickdown’ point. In the Electric program the braking recuperation strength can be selected via paddles behind the steering wheel. Other drive modes include Comfort, ECO and Sport. The driver is able to give priority to electric driving, place the emphasis on driving dynamics in combined drive mode, or give preference to combustion mode in order to save electric range.
