AUSTRALIAN MOTOGP ROUND CALLED OFF FOR 2020 The 2020 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix has been cancelled due to restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The FIM, IRTA and Dorna Sports announced the cancellation of both the Australian and British Grand Prix from the MotoGP calendar. Phillip Island in Victoria, Australia, was to have hosted the MotoGP World Championship on October 23-25, with the British round earlier at Silverstone 28-30 August. “We’re very disappointed that MotoGP fans throughout Victoria, Australia and internationally won’t get the chance to make the pilgrimage to see the world’s best riders compete on one of the best circuits anywhere in the world, but the right decision has been made,” said AGPC Chairman, Paul Little. “The Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix puts Phillip Island on the global stage and it’ll be back better than ever in 2021.” Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

FUTURE BRANDING STILL TO BE DETERMINED FOR TRIPLE EIGHT Triple Eight Race Engineering, that runs the factory-backed Red Bull Holden Racing Team in the Australia Supercars, has reached an amicable agreement with Holden. With General Motors sudden exiting of the Holden brand from Australasia, the future of the Holden brand in the Australia Supercars Championship has been left in limbo, particularly for Triple Eight. “GM Holden and Triple Eight Race Engineering have reached an amicable agreement in the wake of Holden’s announcement that the manufacturer will be closing later this year,” a statement from Triple Eight Race Engineering read. “The settlement, the details of which are commercially confidential, will see the Red Bull Holden Racing Team remain on the grid in its present guise until the end of the current

Virgin Australia Supercars Championship season. The existing contract had been due to expire at the end of 2021.

“The future branding of Triple Eight’s Supercars team is yet to be determined, with the current contract between co-title partner Red Bull and Triple Eight in place until at least the end of the 2021 season.” Details of the agreement have not been revealed. The combination has claimed six drivers’ and eight teams’ championships over a decade of racing. Source: talkmotorsport.co.nz

JEEP DEALERSHIPS COLLECTING UNWANTED PHONES FOR WORTHY CAUSE Jeep dealerships across Australia are partnering with DV Safe Phone to help ensure victims of domestic violence have access to a mobile phone.

2020, we surpassed that number in three short weeks and were looking for a way to take this national, for people all over Australia to get involved.”

People will be able to deliver their unused but still working mobile phone to a drop off point at any of the 69 Jeep dealerships across Australia.

“What we really needed was a company with a national presence, a brand people would recognise and somewhere with ample parking for phone drop-offs. Jeep Dealerships were the obvious choice.”

The donated functional mobile phones will be repurposed for victims of domestic violence through DV Safe Phones. It collects, tests and repairs mobile devices, ensuring they function correctly, before distributing them to victims of domestic violence together with registered not-for-profit the Red Rose Foundation. DV Safe Phone founder Ashton Wood says COVID-19 has sparked an increase in domestic violence reports, as it leaves many victims of domestic abuse locked in a home and in isolation with their abuser.

“I’m thrilled that the Jeep Dealers are getting behind this cause and helping to make it easy for people to donate their phones. Together, we will help save lives,” Wood says. FCA Australia managing director Kevin Flynn says he was eager for the Jeep Dealer network to help mobile phone access become even more available to people in need.

“Many households have at least one old mobile phone at the bottom of a draw, which has been forgotten about. What people don’t realise is that this phone may just save a life,” Wood says.

“Opening up the Jeep Dealer network as drop-off point locations across the nation will allow Australian’s to easily donate unwanted and discarded devices to help support those struggling,” Flynn says.

“DV Safe Phone was started as a pilot in Queensland, with the aim to collect 300 unused mobile phones by the end of May

LENDER’S DATA SHOWS CAR MARKET BOUNCE BACK New lending data from Firstmac shows the new car market is recovering after falls in April and May. The automotive financier says buyers are shrugging off the COVID-19 crisis and are now borrowing to buy cars again. In May, Firstmac says it recorded a record number of car loan applications, strengthening towards the second half of the month and continuing into June. Managing director Kim Cannon says the current crisis was unlike any other that he had lived through in his 40 years in the industry.

“In previous crises people hunkered down and stopped buying anything but this time around, despite the continuing weak economy, they seem to have kept shopping by moving online and are now snapping up discounted cars,” Cannon says. “As the end of financial year car sales start, many people are now getting pre-approved for car loans from us and then visiting dealerships,” he says. In May, Firstmac took 1051 car loan applications across its Firstmac and loans.com.au channels, setting a new monthly

record for both brands. This compares to 721 in March and just 657 in April. Firstmac-branded car loans are distributed through mortgage brokers and specialist car brokers while loans.com.au offers car loans online. The rising number of applications came against a backdrop of very weak car sales in the month of May overall, compared to previous years. New-car sales across Australia were down 35.3% in May 2020 compared to the previous year – with 59,894 vehicles reported as sold versus 92,561 in May 2019. Online car broker Georgie, which was recently acquired by Firstmac, says that while the number of sales actually settled had been low in May, it had picked up sharply in the first week of June to be higher now than before the COVID-19 lockdown. According to Georgie, if the current trend continues vehicle demand is likely to outstrip supply before the EOFY sales are over. Source: autotalk.com.au

FCAI COMMENDS ASSET WRITE-OFF EXTENSION The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) has commended the government’s decision to extend the $150,000 instant asset write-off program. The extension will be available for an additional six months, through to 31st December 2020. It will allow Australian businesses with an annual turnover of less than $500 million to support their operations through continued investment in business assets. The FCAI says this spending will be a key component to Australia’s post-COVID-19 economic recovery. Given the economic circumstances facing many sectors in Australia, including the automotive industry, the FCAI has been calling on the Government to extend this important program. “The automotive industry in Australia has been in decline for some time,” FCAI chief executive Tony Weber says. “As at the end of May 2020, the market had seen 26 consecutive months of negative growth. In addition, the market dropped 48.5% in April 2020 (compared to April 2019), and declined another 35.3% in May 2020 (compared to May 2019).

“We would like to see small businesses follow through on their pre-COVID investment strategies, and replace their older vehicles with new, safer, and more efficient models. “New car dealerships in Australia employ more than 60,000 people nationally and are significant contributors to community and regional economic growth.

“It’s great to see the Government’s support for these small businesses through a number of initiatives such as JobSeeker and JobKeeper, and now through the extension of the instant asset write-off program,” Weber says. Source: autotalk.com.au

“We need to kick start the new vehicle market by stimulating new vehicle purchases, and the instant asset write-off is an important tool in this process.

AUSTRALASIA TO FOLLOW NEW EUROPEAN CRASH TEST PROTOCOL The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) will from this month adopt the new crash testing protocols from the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP). ANCAP communications and advocacy director Rhianne Robson confirmed the move to Go Auto. This year new tests are introduced to address occupant protection, improve post-crash protection and promote the latest advanced driver assistance technology. A key change is the implementation of a new moving barrier to moving car frontal crash test, replacing the offset-deformable barrier test, used by Euro NCAP for the last 23 years. This new crash test not only evaluates the protection of occupants inside the car, but also assesses how the cars’ frontend structurers contribute to injuries in the collision partner. Important innovations are the Mobile Progressive Deformable Barrier and the unique method to rate vehicle compatibility, as well as the first adoption of the world’s most advanced “THOR” mid-sized male crash test dummy. Side impacts account for the second highest frequency of death or serious injuries. The latest updates to this area of the safety assessment include adjustments to the near-side barrier test speed and mass, increasing the severity of the test. For the first time yet, Euro NCAP will evaluate far-side impact protection, focussing on driver protection and the potential interaction between driver and front seat passenger. With the latter test, the protection offered by new-to-market countermeasures such as centre airbags can be adequately verified. Euro NCAP says it continues to test the latest generation of crash prevention and driver assistance systems.

10

New and challenging test scenarios are added to rate AEB technology for cars and vulnerable road users, including back over situations and turning at a crossing. In addition, the first step is taken to evaluate Driver Status Monitoring systems, designed to detect driver fatigue and distraction, as part of the Safety Assist assessment.

Improving a car’s safety isn’t just about more airbags or better driver assistance systems. Post-crash safety too plays a vital role in crash survival. In partnership with CTIF, the International Association of Fire & Rescue Services, Euro NCAP has developed new rating rules to promote better postcrash safety. Manufacturers will be rewarded when rescue information is accurate and easily available. Euro NCAP also checks ease of extrication, electric door handles and endorses advanced eCall functions. The impact of these updates, as well some other minor changes, will be significant says Euro NCAP. It warns that consumers must be careful when directly comparing the latest results with ratings from previous years. It says that only vehicles which perform excellently in crash protection, post-crash and crash avoidance will achieve the top five-star rating. Source: autotalk.com.au

FORD WILL BUILD 2022 VOLKSWAGEN AMAROK The next-generation Volkswagen Amarok due in 2022 will be engineered and built by the Ford Motor Company. The new Ranger platform-derived Amarok is one of three new commercial vehicles to be developed under the global alliance formed by the Ford Motor Company and Volkswagen AG in July 2019. According to Ford and Volkswagen the alliance between them is leveraging their complementary strengths in midsize pickup trucks and commercial and electric vehicles. As well as Ford developing the 2022 Amarok, Volkswagen will develop a city delivery van based on the latest Caddy model as early as 2021. Ford will later develop a one-tonne cargo van.

“This collaboration will efficiently drive down development costs, allowing broader global distribution of electric and commercial vehicles, and enhance the positions of both companies.” “Commercial vehicles are fundamental to Ford today and an area where we will accelerate and grow, and working with Volkswagen on these platforms will provide both of us significant financial advantages in things like engineering, and plants and tooling,” Ford chief operating officer Jim Farley says. “Separately, Ford will add battery electric versions of Transit and F-150 in the next 24 months for commercial customers who increasingly need zero emissions and the power of connectivity, data and artificial intelligence.”

During the product lifecycle Ford and Volkswagen expect production of the pick-up and the two commercial vans will account for more than 8 million units combined.

“The collaboration with Ford is a key building block of our GRIP 2025+ strategy and part of the current transformation of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles,” Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles management board chair Thomas Sedran says.

The alliance will also produce a highly differentiated Ford electric vehicle for Europe by 2023 built on Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Drive platform.

“This long-term cooperation with Ford will strengthen our very good position in area of light commercial vehicles, especially in our core European markets.”

“In light of the Covid 19 pandemic and its impacts on the global economy, more than ever it is vital to set up resilient alliances between strong companies,” Volkswagen Group CEO Dr. Herbert Diess says.

Source: autotalk.com.au

The Volkswagen/Ford alliance does not include crossownership between the companies, which will remain competitors in the marketplace.

NEW-GENERATION KODO-DESIGN MAZDA BT-50 REVEALED Mazda Australia has revealed the new Kodo-design Mazda BT-50, announcing it will go on sale in Australia towards the end of 2020. The Australian distributor says the Mazda BT-50 offers a comprehensive list of advanced features, bold styling and rugged capability, all designed to the highest safety standards.

Inside the new BT-50, Mazda says it’s commitment to human centric design is as prominent as ever, with comfortable seats that wrap around the body positioned in a cabin environment, which benefits from the soft-touch horizontal layout of the instrument panel.

Mazda Australia managing director Vinesh Bhindi says the brand new BT-50 will set a new benchmark in the segment. “The new Mazda BT-50 will raise the bar for what customers can expect from their Ute,” Bhindi says.

“Ownership experience remains key to Mazda customers and the new BT-50 will take it a step further with a long list of accessories and customer programs to launch as we get closer to going on sale later in the year,” he says. Mazda says it has fused its Kodo design language with the muscular proportions a Ute demands, to convey a sense of toughness and powerful movement. It says the new BT-50 adopts a distinctive Mazda face with its three-dimensional signature wing wrapping its front grille and extending out to the side of the vehicle into the sculpted headlamps. A strong rear-view mirror presence is amplified with a sense of width created by the use of low outboard parking lamps. According to Mazda the Kodo design is exemplified by sweeping crease lines running from the front grille out towards the wing mirrors, paired with an unbroken centre line that flows from front to rear, combining to ensure a dynamic, powerful appearance. A strong shoulder line running into the tail lamps and sculpted door design complements newly developed body colours, engineered to enhance the Mazda BT-50’s exterior. Those new colours include Gunblue Mica and Concrete Grey Mica.

New Mazda BT-50 cabin environment It says the BT-50 is designed for ease-of-use and to match driver needs, with a telescopic steering column to find the perfect driving position, and a large touchscreen infotainment system with functionality including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Developed in partnership with Isuzu Motor Limited, Mazda says the BT-50 boasts the renowned capability and reliability the Isuzu brand enjoys in the light commercial segment. The BT-50 is powered by a 140kW/450Nm four-cylinder 3-litre diesel engine. With a reduced body weight and more frugal engine, Mazda says the BT-50 will also launch with a significant improvement in fuel economy. It will have a 3,500kg towing capacity and a payload capability in excess of 1000kg. For the first time the new BT-50 will offer adaptive cruise control, auto emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert as standard equipment. The new BT-50 is scheduled to go on sale in Australia later in 2020. Customers are encouraged to register their online interest in the vehicle to stay up to date with new news and availability for test drives. Source: autotalk.com.au

BUSINESS INSIGHTS During these uncertain times, we believe it’s critically important that we look out for each other, to ensure our businesses emerge from this period stronger than before and with renewed relationships. We’ve put together a series of tips to assist our readers with their business operations and bolster customer loyalty during this time.

Be true to your brand and purpose

Through every interaction, people are paying attention to COVID-19 responses. On a business level, this could correspond to internal policies such as additional sick leave or more thorough sanitization procedures. If any policies like these are/were in place prior, reiterate these to help build trust & confidence. The most important point, however is to stay true to your brand and purpose. Your business was founded on a set of ideals, with a goal in mind – don’t lose sight of this.

Communicate with your customers

Like us, our customers are experiencing a difficult time just the same. IT is important to let them know that their business is greatly appreciate, now and ongoing. Touching base with your customers on a regular basis will let them know that they are valued, and this will assist in forging stronger relationships for the future.

Communicate with your employees

Your employees are your most valuable asset, many employees all over the globe are currently experiencing anxiety and uncertainty. Help alleviate this in your business by keeping your team in the loop regarding business decisions, advise of them of issues as they arise, and work with them to find solutions - the more minds the better. Help protect their personal health by implementing/reiterating distancing and cleaning processes, to ensure everyone who doesn’t have the ability to work remotely feels safe in the workplace.

Try to team up

Times like these really highlight the collaborative nature of our people. Many businesses are displaying shows of good will to properly service their customers. For example, if you run out of inventory, is it possible to source from your competitor? The important outcome is that the job gets completed – this will help maintain trust and confidence from your customers.

Take care of your loyal customers

Further to the previous point, who are your most loyal customers? What impact have they made on your business over the life of your relationship with them? Without these kinds of customers, there would be a lot more uncertainty in our day to day. Think about what special services and resources you can supply to your most valuable customers. Special offers and discounts will not only encourage retention, but attract new business as well. Keep in mind this will only apply if you have the ability to service everyone.

Find ways to drive revenue

18

If a revenue stream has been impacted, it may be time to switch focus. Think about your current assets, particularly those which are revenue-generating. Is there another way they can be used, or can they be used for a different purpose? This could ease pressure on your top line, and prevent you needing to cut costs. It could also suggest a more diversified revenue

mix in the long term, not to mention your customers will be happy that you can now meet more of their needs.

Assess orders, inventory and service levels

This could include delivery timeframes, sales forecasting, and supply chain interruptions. If you identify any delays or interruptions, be sure to communicate this with your customers so they know what to expect. This may also be a good time to build relationships with other businesses in your sector – working together to find alternate solutions could result in a mutually beneficial arrangement, which would see you through until we begin to approach normality again.

Review your marketing and advertising strategy

Given that certain products may be in short supply, or unavailable altogether, you may need to shift or rebalance your marketing communications. Now is a good time to review your spend on search engine marketing (SEM), social media and traditional media. For example, if one of your most popular products is temporarily out of stock, this should free up some budget to funnel into other search terms. Make sure everything currently not relevant is switched off, so that your budget is not being wasted on clicks that do not become conversions.

Review digital properties

This applies to digital assets such as your website and e-commerce store. During this time of product shortages, it’s essential that all your product information is up to date. Ensure that any out of stock products are removed from your online store, and if a price increase is necessary, explain the reasoning behind this to your customers. It’s also wise to ensure that your digital assets have adequate capacity. Online traffic has seen a dramatic increase and demand is shifting from traditional to online retail, and those not prepared for this shift should do so as soon as possible.

Consider using advanced technology

Now that social distancing is becoming a part of everyday life, consider ways that you can use technology to accomplish tasks previously based on face-toface interaction. For example, you could use augmented reality or video to walk people through procedures such as setting up products for use, installing spare parts, and maintaining products. Another example is the use of chat bots, which can be used across your website and social media to free up your customer service team, and make them available for other tasks.

Remember that cash matters

An unfortunate consequence of recent times is financial uncertainty, which means that now more than ever, efficient invoicing and payables practices are imperative. It’s important to have timely and accurate invoicing, as errors in the process can lead to delays. Identify businesses who may be changing their payment and invoicing practices, so that all parties are on the same page, and invoices are processed and paid in a timely manner.

How mindfulness can help during the Coronavirus outbreak (Article originally provided by Smiling Mind for Beyond Blue) We are living through an unprecedented and uncertain time, requiring each of us to navigate our way, as best we can, through a rapidly evolving global health crisis. With things changing so quickly, such uncertainty and unpredictability can take a toll on our mental and physical health. In this article, you will find different practical things you can do to take care of your own wellbeing, as well as support the children in your life, your colleagues, loved ones and friends.

Fear, anxiety and denial

Warning signs

Beware denial

Healthy brain breaks

Given the nature of the threat we are facing, fear and anxiety are adaptive responses. It’s important to recognise that fear and anxiety can quickly escalate and reach a tipping point beyond which they are no longer helpful and can affect us in negative ways - our thinking can quickly spiral, becoming increasingly negative and difficult to unhook from. It can also be tempting to turn away from and deny the seriousness of what’s happening. Denial may be particularly appealing given the significant impact that this outbreak will have on so many people financially, emotionally or physically. While temporary distractions can be useful for giving our minds a break, on the whole denial is not a helpful approach as it can leave us vulnerable and exhausted.

In addition to knowing and recognising our warning signals, mindfulness gives us the opportunity to respond and make better decisions and respond as opposed to react. Examples include irritability, losing patience, a sense of urgency, difficulty sleeping, inability to focus, catastrophic thinking, ruminating, and eating or drinking more than usual. Giving your brain a break when you’re nearing your tipping point can be a helpful way of deactivating the acute stress (‘fight or flight’) response. Even short moments of reprieve are beneficial as they help reset enabling us to find the middle ground between overwhelm and denial. It’s in this place that we’re able to make better choices and are best placed to support ourselves and those around us.

We recommend trying out the following as often as you need to:

Move

Any kind of physical movement is a great way of releasing the build-up of excess energy – take yourself for a walk or run outside; do some stretching, yoga or some other form of mindful movement.

Breathe

When you slow your breathing rate down the uncomfortable physical sensations of fear and anxiety start to subside. Try the following: •

Stop what you’re doing, take three long, slow deep breaths.

Impose a rhythm on your breathing so that your out-breath becomes longer than your in-breath e.g. breathe for 4 counts, hold your breath for 2 counts, and breathe out for 6 counts. If that doesn’t feel comfortable, try imposing a 3-1-4 rhythm.

Sleep

When we’re fearful and anxious it can be hard to sleep. Given the importance of sleep for our mental and physical wellbeing, including immunity, establishing good habits around sleep is particularly important at the moment. Consider creating a pre-sleep routine by turning off news and screens at least an hour before going to bed.

Connect

While social connection may be tricky during this time when many people are physical distancing, staying connected to others is more important than ever as we are wired to connect and seek comfort and care from others. We are fortunate to have so much technology at our fingertips enabling us to stay connected, as we communicate best when we can see each other’s body language and facial expressions. Do your best to listen and interact as mindfully as you can with others – really pay attention to the people you’re interacting with.
